CSHL Press releases new book on the biology of drug addiction

Public release date: 12-Nov-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Contact: Elizabeth Powers powerse@cshl.edu 516-422-4101 Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory

Drug and alcohol abuse elicits significant biological changes in the brain that drive compulsive behavior and lead to addiction. Abrupt cessation leads to withdrawal, craving, and relapse. A complete understanding of the brain changes produced by abused substances is therefore necessary if we are to develop treatments for drug dependence.

Written and edited by experts in the field, this collection from Cold Spring Harbor Perspectives in Medicine explores the biological basis of addiction to alcohol, nicotine, and other psychoactive drugs. Contributors describe the molecular targets of these drugs, the resulting changes to neural networks, and the various genetic, developmental, and behavioral factors that influence the progression from abuse to addiction. Animal models of addictive behavior and techniques to dissect neural circuits are also described.

This volume includes discussion of compounds currently used or under development to treat drug dependence. Thus, it is an indispensable reference for neuroscientists and all who are interested in reducing the public health burden of substance abuse.

Nottingham part of £20m investment for UK synthetic biology

Public release date: 12-Nov-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Contact: Lindsay Brooke lindsay.brooke@nottingham.ac.uk 44-011-595-15751 University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham has been awarded funding of 2.9m to help make low-carbon fuel.

In a move that could potentially revolutionise major UK industries and help us to meet serious social and environmental challenges, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) has announced an unprecedented 20m worth of synthetic biology projects.

The funding was announced by the Chancellor George Osborne at the Royal Society.

The six projects focus on biotechnology and advanced bioenergy and will use synthetic biology to investigate major global challenges, such as producing low-carbon fuel and reducing the cost of industrial raw materials. The funding will also help to build a world-leading synthetic biology research community in the UK.

Minister for Universities and Science David Willetts said: "Synthetic biology could provide solutions to the global challenges we face and offers significant growth opportunities in a range of important sectors from health to energy. However the commercialisation of basic science is largely untapped.

"This investment is part of the Government's commitment to making the UK a world leader in the research and application of synthetic biology. It will help to ensure that academics and industry can realise its full potential."

Led by Professor Nigel Minton, The University of Nottingham researchers in the Centre for Biomolecular Sciences are working to maximize the use of sustainable forms of energy by harnessing the ability of certain bacteria to 'consume' the gas carbon monoxide (CO) and convert it into useful chemicals and fuels.

CO is an abundant resource, and a waste product of steel manufacturing, oil refining and other industries. If we can use this CO to provide more sustainable energy, it would also result in a reduction in fossil carbon emissions.

i hate working at the children #39;s place; stupid little kids whining all day I was making the popcorn when Nick walks in and hugs me from behind. I smiled and pulled the popcorn out of the microwave. Nick:*kisses his head;goes to the fridge*So, pick a movie? Nick sat next to me and I leaned against him and we both ate from the bowl of popcorn. Our hands brushed every now and then, but neither of us said anything. I jumped a few times throughout the movie and Nick would just chuckle, but held onto me tighter. After the movie was over, I was laying on the couch with my feet resting on Nick #39;s lap as he told me some stupid story. Joe:*laughs*You #39;re so stupid it #39;s funny! Nick:Hey now kid, may I remind you who got a B plus on their biology test? Joe:*shrugs*May I remind you that I took the test after being absent for over a week and got an A on it? Nick:Touche. *rubs Joe #39;s legs* Feeling better? Joe:A lot. Thanks for everything. Nick:No problem kid, let #39;s go to bed alright? McElheny recalled being in attendance at a 1986 biology conference when the Human Genome Project was first seriously discussed. He noted that some of the scientists in attendance were aghast at the prospects of the venture. "They saw their money getting swallowed up in a big biology project," he mused. Ironically, he said, the concept was supported by the older scientists and vehemently opposed by their younger colleagues, who were skeptical of the potential of the project. Compounding the institutional intrigue, the Department of Energy pushed to develop the Human Genome Project, since it had the technological resources to undertake the venture. However, the National Institute of Health was troubled by the prospect of losing control over the "future of biology" and fought to be a part of the project, despite the reservations of "several key people" in the institution. In detailing some of the benefits of genomics, McElheny explained that ...From:USAMOONBASEViews:2 0ratingsTime:01:16:26More inEducation

I mean, we #39;re the world #39;s most advanced technological mdash;I mean, you could say Japan mdash;but generally, the United States is where most of the innovations still happens. People still move to the United States. And that #39;s largely because of the intellectual capital we have, the general understanding of science. When you have a portion of the population that doesn #39;t believe in that, it holds everybody back, really. Evolution is the fundamental idea in all of life science, in all of biology. Too Late To Apologize ~ Chapter Three
Too Late To Apologize ~ Chapter Three. "Justin Bieber fan" I huffed a sigh when I unpacked my last item. "Finally." I blew the hair out of my face and sat in my dorm. My friend, Kacie, yes I already made a friend on my first day here because she #39;s my roommate --- showed me around campus. "So what classes are you taking?" She asked, sitting across from me on her own bed. "I #39;m taking the usual Mathematics, Biology, US History..." I trailed off, not willing to explain. "Anything of your interests?" Kacie asked. "Photography." "Really? So you like taking pictures and stuff?" "I guess you could say that... whenever something catches my eye I have the urge to capture it, so I thought #39;photography would be the perfect calss for me. #39;" "So where did you come from? Like down south?" Kacie wondered. "A lot farther than that," I laughed. "Stratford, Canada actually." "Like... where Justin Bieber grew up?" She sat up, suddenly interested. I inwardly rolled my eyes and shrugged. "Yeah. Where... he lived." I exaggerated the #39;he #39;, not wanting to say his name. "That #39;s so cool! Don #39;t think I #39;m weird but... I love him so much. He #39;s so cute and oh - my - god don #39;t get me started with his songs he..." Kacie continued to blab about Justin while I blocked her out after the first few seconds and went to get a drink. She #39;s a sweet girl, but if she #39;s going to be talking about him all the time I don #39;t know if this is the place for me.
