The Myth of the Scientist: Crystal Dilworth at TEDxYouth@Caltech
Crystal Dilworth has a BS in biochemistry from UC San Diego, and is currently working on her Ph.D. in molecular neuroscience in the lab of Henry A. Lester at Caltech. Crystal is a violinist, former nationally ranked Rhythmic Gymnast, former professional modern dancer and choreographer, an active member of the Caltech theater community, and a member of the team behind PHDComics.com/tv. As a scientist and communicator, Crystal hopes to chip away the mystique of the academic "ivory tower" and reveal researchers and their work as human, relevant, and "cool." In thespirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations) TEDxYouth@Caltech was held on January 19, 2013, at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, CA. 06- Pharmacology in Research - Interview with Dr. Haian Fu
For additional information visit http://www.cancerquest.org Dr. Haian Fu is Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Professor in the Department of Hematology Oncology at Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Fu studies the signals that travel between and within cells, including cancer cells. He hopes to use this knowledge to develop novel drugs that can interfere with the abnormal signals being sent/received by cancer cells. His background in pharmacology gives him a great insight into what types of agents can actually work as drugs in humans. In this interview, Dr. Fu discusses how his training in biochemistry and pharmacology complement his cancer research. To learn more about cancer and watch additional interviews, please visit the CancerQuest website at http://www.cancerquest.org.

Irish Sports Council Publish 2012 Anti-Doping Testing Figures – Video

Irish Sports Council Publish 2012 Anti-Doping Testing Figures
The Irish Sports Council today published their anti-doping test figures for 2012. The national programme saw 787 tests across 31 sports in 2012. This is a decrease from previous years but is due to a more targeted programme and a major increase in blood testing to 133 over the course of the year. The data showed there were eight anti-doping rule violations in 2012. Four of these violations arose from a substance found in supplements and four were related to cannabis which is a prohibited substance. Minister of State Michael Ring, commenting on the figures said The Irish anti-doping programme is very strong and I want to commend Professor Buckley and the Irish Sports Council for their continuing excellence in this area. It is an international issue and that is why I was delighted to be able to have dialogue with the senior representatives from WADA today. I have made it a priority during the EU Presidency to advance the battle against doping. Information was also published on "Whereabouts Failures". For individual sports there were 18 "Filing Failures" and 3 "Missed Tests". Three indiscretions of this kind can lead to an athlete receiving a sanction which to date has not arisen under the Irish Anti-Doping Rules. In team sports there were 12 "Unsuccessful Attempts" including 8 in the GAA. The other highlights in 2012 include significant progress in advancing the concept of an intelligence-led programme and the and the significant contribution made to improving detection of ...

If you wish to receive credit for this activity please access the learning modules through the following web site: http://www.psehealthyenergy.org Educational Objectives: A systematic approach to understanding the toxic actions of chemicals is helpful when the physiological sites of action are known. Most agents follow chemical class. The shale exposures involve a mixture of chemical and physical agents. This presentation provides information on what chemicals do in shale gas exposure as well as the fundamental toxicology of these chemicals. After completion of this course, the learner should be able to: 1. Describe fundamental toxicology of chemicals associated with shale gas development 2. Describe what chemicals do in shale gas emissions exposure 3. Describe framework for how people evaluate chemical mixtures 4. Describe four completed pathways of exposure 5. Describe 12 emissions of concern for immediate toxic responses 6. Describe health conditions reported by multiple sources and locations in the United States David Brown is the Public Health Toxicologist and Director of Public Health Toxicology for Environment and Human Health, Inc. A viewer #39;s 3 questions (Part 1)
"Answer me these questions three . . . " Q: Have you been diagnosed? A: I have been misdiagnosed. I #39;ve had to carefully self-diagnose, which doctors frown upon. Due to a history of anxiety, I have trust issues; so, after trusting people who couldn #39;t help me I decided to inform and help myself. At age: 11 or 12 (can #39;t remember exactly), Diagnosis from a counselor /therapist: Depression -- the unipolar kind At age: 26, Diagnosis from a psychiatrist who spoke with me 2 or 3 times in 72 hours: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD -- not BD which is Bipolar Disorder) At age: 27, I read my BPD diagnosis and then I learned about it- realizing it was wrong. I then learned about Avoidant Personality Disorder (AvPD) and self-diagnosed myself as having developed AvPD as a result of dealing with my mental health issues on my own, to help myself cope with the stress (by avoiding pretty much anything else in my life that I wasn #39;t compelled to deal with if avoidance meant a reduction in my stress load). At age: 30, I self-diagnosed with symptoms matching affective disorder (aka mood disorder) with a likelihood that it could be Schizoaffective Disorder; I #39;m not sure if a doctor would match my history of symptoms to Bipolar I, Bipolar II, Cyclothymia, etc. It #39;s my perspective and opinion that "Bipolar Disorder with Psychotic Features" is likely the diagnosis that matches the symptoms I #39;ve experienced. I have the phenotype to match diagnostic criteria, but I #39;m unsure how I would match ...

Dr Joe Dispenza- TED Talks with Dr Joe Dispenza – Video

Dr Joe Dispenza- TED Talks with Dr Joe Dispenza
tinyurl.com Dr Joe Dispenza, DC, studied biochemistry at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ He has a Bachelor of Science degree with an emphasis in Neuroscience and also received his Doctor of Chiropractic Degree at Life University in Atlanta, Georgia, graduating magna cum laude. Over the last 10 years, Dr. Dispenza has lectured in over 17 different countries on six continents educating people about the role and function of the human brain. His approach, taught in a very simple method, creates a bridge between true human potential and the latest scientific theories of neuroplasticity. He explains how thinking in new ways, as well as changing beliefs, can literally rewire one #39;s brain. The premise of his work is founded in his total conviction that every person on this planet has within them, the latent potential of greatness and true unlimited abilities. His new book, Evolve Your Brain: The Science of Changing Your Mind connects the subjects of thought and consciousness with the brain, the mind, and the body. The book explores "the biology of change." That is, when we truly change our mind, there is a physical evidence of change in the brain. As an author of several scientific articles on the close relationship between the brain and the body, Dr. Dispenza ties information together to explain the roles these functions play in physical health and disease. In his research into spontaneous remissions, Dr. Dispenza has found similarities in people who have experienced so ...
