Stem Cells Provide New Thyroid Therapies – Anti Aging News

Posted on Feb. 10, 2017, 6 a.m. in Thyroid Hormone Stem Cell Stem Cell Research

Researchers have identified a way to engineer new thyroid cells from stem cells, which could lead to new thyroid disease treatments.

A recent report published in the medical journal Stem Cell Reports, sheds light on breakthrough research regarding the use of thyroid cells derived from stem cells for new therapies. Scientists at Boston University's School Medicine led the work. They have pinpointed a means of efficiently engineering thyroid cells by way of stem cells that will eventually help analyze and treat thyroid diseases.

Why the Thyroid is so Important

The thyroid is a gland positioned in the mid-section of the lower neck. When this gland does not function as designed, it wreaks all sorts of havoc on the body. Thyroid diseases occur when the gland is hyperactive and generates excessive hormones (hyperthyroidism) or generates too few hormones (hypothyroidism). Though the thyroid is fairly diminutive, it generates hormones that extend to tissues, cells and organs throughout the body to maintain a regulated metabolism. The metabolism is vitally important as it determines the rate at which the human body produces energy through oxygen and nutrients.

It is estimated that about 20 million individuals in the United States are plagued by a form of thyroid disease. A whopping 60 percent of these cases are never diagnosed. Unfortunately, thyroid disorders are life-long or chronic conditions that often prove quite challenging to manage. When thyroid diseases are undiagnosed, they can lead to particularly nasty health conditions ranging from osteoporosis to cardiovascular diseases and even infertility. Medical professionals are not completely certain as to what causes thyroid diseases.

Details About the Discovery

The breakthrough described above was discovered after studies were performed on mice. Stem cells are valued as they can mature into an array of different cell types. The researchers referenced above have determined how to transform the genetically modified stem cells from mice into thyroid cells. They determined there is a specific window during cell development to perform the transformation in an efficient manner. The group switched the Nkx2-1 gene off/on while guiding the lab-cultured stem cells through development stages. When the gene was on, most stem cells were transformed to thyroid cells in a small period of time.

What it Means for the Future

This discovery will likely allow for new research models and breakthrough treatments for thyroid diseases. It is anticipated that new thyroid cells for humans will eventually be engineered so medical professionals can better study and mitigate thyroid diseases. The principle might even apply to additional cell types to boot.

BHRT: A match made in anti-aging – ModernMedicine

Dr. LightCosmetic surgery and hormone replacement address the same issue from different vantage points. As such, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, or BHRT, is a powerful tool that should be incorporated into all successful cosmetic practices, according to Kevin Light, DO, MBA, a cosmetic surgeon and age management specialist in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Light presented Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy and the Cosmetic Surgery Practice yesterday at the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgerys (AACSs) 2017 annual scientific meeting in San Diego, Calif. Dr. Light, author of the book OutSmart Aging, tells Cosmetic Surgery Times that, from a cosmetic perspective, aging negatively impacts the skin, with thinning, wrinkling, age spots and pigmentation, as well as loss of elasticity, resiliency and glow. Cosmetic aging results in soft tissue volume loss, in the face, breast and abdomen. It also results in bone loss, or shrinkage of the skull and mandible; hair loss, weight gain and fat redistribution. Hormone loss causes impaired wound healing and immune function, which can impact cosmetic surgery patients. Hormone loss also results in quality of life issues, from energy and sleep, to concentration, memory, libido and sexual function, he says. BHRT can halt or reverse all of this. This is no longer 'magic' and is well documented in the literature, Dr. Light says. From a business perspective, bioidentical hormone therapy is a $15 billion business and trending positively, Dr. Light says. Patients are aware of it and are demanding it. Several early adopter plastic and cosmetic surgeons around the country already offer it, Dr. Light says. BHRT is a powerful adjunct to age management and enhances patient 'stickiness' for the cosmetic surgery practice. The business model is easy and can be delegated to others. It presents incredible cross-sell opportunities.

Marketing Immortality – JSTOR Daily

Weve long been fascinated with the ideas of immortality and eternal youth. Around 220 BCE, Emperor Shihuangdi searched for the elixir of life. Juan Ponce de Len searched for the Fountain of Youth in the 1500s, and in 1890, Oscar Wildes Dorian Gray sold his soul for a perpetually pretty face. The Methuselah Mouse Prize, an award granted to teams that engineer older and healthier mice, took the fantasy out of our myths and put it into our laboratories.

Recently, a controversial $8,000 blood transfusion treatment shows that its also moved into our clinics.

Anti-aging technology isnt limited to groundbreaking medicine.

The provider, Jesse Karmazin, based the idea on a study that suggested aging in mice could be reversed, after old mice that were given blood from young ones for four weeks showed changes in hallmark signs of getting older. Participants can pay for an infusion of young peoples blood and plasma in the hopes itll rejuvenate their own systems. The study itself is unreliable, the treatment unproven, and the cost toclients is astronomical. Karmazin himself isnt a medical professional, but an entrepreneur who sees anti-aging research as a market opportunity. The business has the potential to garner $4.8 million.

Anti-aging technology isnt limited to groundbreaking medicine. It lines pharmacies and makeup counters. Wrinkle creams, skin repair formulas, vitamins, Viagra; these are small but concrete examples of the money poured into researching, packaging, and selling youth. Our aversion to aging has enabled the commercialization of immortality, despite its impossibility.

Given our current enthusiasm for staving it off, we may not realize age didnt always terrify us, perhaps because we didnt live long enough for it to.

Senectitude in 1481 originally meant old age; senescence was used in 1695 to mean growing old; and senile was used in 1661 to signify what was suited to old age. The term senility was used in 1791 to mean a state of being old or infirm due to old age. But by 1848 senile meant weakness, and by the late nineteenth century it indicated a pathological state. The term has taken on greater medical negative connotations ever since.

As our lives have grown longer, life span and health span have become crucially different. Although age brings benefitsfamilies, wisdom, stabilitythe accompanying physical degeneration, and its correlating limitations, make us hyperfocused on old ageas the signpost for the approaching end of life.

The fixation on defeating death has had the sideeffect of vilifying age. John A. Vincent writes, science as culture misdirects the way in which old age is understood. Rather than valuing life in all its diversity, including its final phase, it leads to misguided devotion of resources to solving the problem of death. The focus on biological failure sets up a cultural construction of old age which leads to the low esteem in which it is currently held.

Our desire for youth isnt just a fear of dying; its the desire to keep a life worth living, and for us, that means immortality is not merely living to 150. It means living to 150, perpetually age 30.

Beauty and anti-aging is by far the largest sector in the $3.7 trillion wellness economy – CosmeticsDesign.com USA

That is according to newly released data from the Global Wellness Institute. The non-profit, focused on research, innovation, and advocacy, held an event in New York City this week to launch its 2017 Global Wellness Economy Monitor report. And Cosmetics Design was there.

Katherine Johnston and Ophelia Yeung, senior research fellows from the institute, presented the new data to a packed room at Steelcase headquarters.

Other speakers at the event included Susie Ellis, chairman and CEO of the Global Wellness Institute, who spoke on trends; and Mehmet Oz, surgeon, professor at Columbia University, and television personality, and Anjan Chatterjee, chair of neurology at Pennsylvania Hospital and author of The Aesthetic Brain, who both shared remarks to contextualize the data.

Data mining

The Global Wellness Institute gathers data on five key wellness industry sectors: wellness tourism, wellness lifestyle real estate, the spa business, thermal / mineral springs, and workplace wellness. And to round out its report, the instituteaggregates and analyses data from outside sources on five other sectors: beauty and anti-aging; healthy eating, nutrition, and weight loss; prevention and personalized medicine and public health; fitness and mind-body; and complementary and alternative medicine.

Data in the report reflects the global wellness economy of 2015. As the institutes report explains, the wellness economy encompasses industries that enable consumers to incorporate wellness activities and lifestyles into their daily lives.

That year, workplace wellness accounted for $43bn of this economy. Thermal / mineral springs were $51bn. The spa industry came in at $99bn. Wellness lifestyle real estate accounted for $119bn. Complementary and alternative medicine was $199bn. Prevention and personalized medicine and public health came in at $534bn, the fitness and mind-body sector at $542bn. And, wellness tourism was $563bn of the economy.

Moving up in value, healthy eating, nutrition, and weight loss accounted for $648bn, while beauty and anti-aging outperformed all other sectors with $999bn.

Looking ahead

While the team at The Global Wellness Institute sees significant potential for growth and cooperation among the ten sectors, the wellness economy also faces significant challenges going forward: growing income inequality and divergent access to wellness, the need for evidence-based wellness, and the tension between mandated wellness and personal freedom, as the report explains it.

The institutes full report is available online here .

Inflammatory Disease Prospects Discovered – Anti Aging News

Posted on Feb. 2, 2017, 6 a.m. in Inflammation Genetic Research GI-Digestive

Large Finnish genetic study of over ten million DNA variations reveals new possibilities for treatments of a wide range of inflammatory diseases.

A study conducted by Finnish researchers has pinpointed possible new treatments for an array of inflammatory diseases. The research was conducted by a team at the University of Turku's Research Centre of Applied and Preventive Cardiovascular Medicine. These scientists studied more than 10 million DNA variations and identified new links between inflammation tracers and the human genome. The study determined that there are several new possibilities for the treatments of diseases like coeliac disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, atherosclerosis, multiple sclerosis and even some forms of cancer.

An Explanation of Cytokines

Cytokines played a critical role in the above referenced study. These vitally important proteins move throughout the bloodstream to regulate inflammation reactions. Alterations in their mode of operation have been tied to all sorts of inflammatory diseases. The study was centered on an investigation of the connections between 41 unique cytokines as well as growth factors and approximately 10.7 million variations of DNA. The scientists' aim was to identify specific processes at the molecular level that spur a heightened risk for the onset of inflammatory diseases. Gaining an understanding of these processes allows for a more effective treatment of inflammatory diseases.

Scientists found that the medicine daclizumab that was formerly used to treat organ rejection reactions can also serve to treat Crohn's disease and multiple sclerosis. A bump in MIP1b-cytokine activity also functions as a treatment method against Behcet disease and coeliac disease. Additional clinical studies are necessary to verify the observations. Additional Study Details

The data relied upon for the above-referenced study was comprised of long-term research information compiled to span an array of risk factors for heart-related diseases amongst Finns. This data is especially valuable as it is highly unique compared to other data sets used across the globe for similar studies.

Study participants were monitored from childhood all the way to adulthood. The year 1980 was used as a baseline. Over 3,500 people were studied in a cross-sectional manner. Subsequent visits occurred in 1983, 1986, 2001, 2007 and 2011. Surveys pertaining to cardiovascular health were conducted at 5-year intervals from 1972 to 2012 to gauge heart-related risk factors across Finland. All-in-all, nearly 54,000 subjects between the ages of 25 and 74 partook in the surveys.

Evidence Stemming From Human Genetics Hastens Medical Development

Tech developments have allowed for the practice of studies pertaining to genome-wide association for the past 100 years. Such studies took a close look at the millions of variations in DNA and their impact for each of the properties studied. These research efforts have identified more than 100 genomic loci that impact the possibility of ulcerous colitis or Crohn's disease developing. However, the exact molecular process spurring the heightened risk is unclear.

Studies focusing on genome-wide association have been initiated in which response variables molecules are used to mediate the risk of disease within the blood stream. Examples include the use of growth factors and cytokines rather than using the diseases themselves.

The Quest for Safe, Affordable and Effective Medicine

Drug candidates in which evidence from human genetics proves their effectiveness stand a much better chance to be approved within clinical studies. These studies test for safety as well as effectiveness. It is estimated that nearly 800 million dollars will be necessary to develop a market for one medicinal molecule. However, genetics research stands to provide considerable savings in the context of medical development.

To a large extent, its a matter of testosterone, said Dr. Benjamin Levine, of the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine.
