UpToDate performs a continuous review of over 375 journals and other resources. Updates are added as important new information is published. The literature review for version 15.1 is current through December 2006; this topic was last changed on January 10, 2007. The next version of UpToDate (15.2) will be released in June 2007.

INTRODUCTION ?€” Pericardial effusion can develop in patients with acute pericarditis or may be seen as an incidental and silent finding in a variety of systemic disorders. It may have important implications for prognosis (as in patients with intrathoracic neoplasm), for diagnosis (as in myopericarditis or acute pericarditis), or for both (as in dissection of the ascending aorta).

A general overview of the diagnosis and treatment of pericardial effusion will be presented here. Issues related to specific causes of pericardial effusion (eg, neoplasm, bacterial infection, tuberculosis, postmyocardial infarction) are discussed separately in the appropriate topic reviews. The evaluation and management of acute pericarditis is also discussed separately. (See "Evaluation and management of acute pericarditis") Read more...

Optimizing Omega-3 Intake May Avert Kidney Cancer

Omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent kidney cancer in women, says a newly published study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.1 While omega-3 consumption is correlated with decreased risks of heart disease, depression, and breast cancer, its role in kidney cancer has previously been unknown.2-4

Scientists followed a group of 61,433 women, aged 40-76, over an average of 15 years. The women completed a food-frequency questionnaire at baseline and at the study's end. Regular consumption of omega-3-rich fatty fish?€”such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, and herring was associated with a significantly decreased risk of developing renal cell carcinoma, or kidney cancer. By contrast, consumption of lean fish (low in omega-3 fatty acids) did not protect the women against developing kidney cancer.1

These results indicate that added protection against kidney cancer is yet another important health benefit of regularly consuming omega-3 fatty acids. Read more...

American CryoStem Completes Cell Processing for Clinical Study

RED BANK, NJ--(Marketwire -02/07/12)- American CryoStem Corporation (OTCQB: CRYO.OB - News) announced today that it has completed providing stem cell processing services for Personal Cell Sciences Corp., a cutting edge manufacturer of anti-aging skin care products.

The study involves researching the regenerative function of a conditioned medium obtained from each participant's adipose (fat tissue) derived mesenchymal stem cells and their ability to promote the production or secretion of collagen, elastin and fibronectin related to skin wound healing.

John Arnone, CEO of American CryoStem and Founder of Personal Cell Sciences, commented, "CRYO's patented tissue culture media and its proprietary, aseptic adipose tissue processing methodology allows, as an added benefit for PCS customers to store a clinical grade sample of their own stem cells for future use in regenerative medicine. We are pleased to provide comprehensive Bio-Insurance storage solutions at our clinical facility."

The adipose tissue samples were acquired utilizing a mini-liposuction procedure. A total of sixty milliliters (approximately 2 fluid ounces) of adipose tissue was collected in the physician's office and sent to CRYO's laboratory for processing. Once processed, the resulting stromal vascular fraction (SVF) was forwarded to the Personal Cell Sciences laboratory for proprietary formulation for patient specific products.

"We are very excited to announce our service agreement and participation in this clinical study for Personal Cell Sciences. This contractual manufacturing agreement reinforces our capabilities to provide CRYO's exceptional clinical processing for relevant adult stem cell related products," said Anthony Dudzinski, COO of American CryoStem. "We look forward to our continued business relationship with PCS and expanding these services to other developers to speed their product's time to market."

About American CryoStem: American CryoStem Corporation (OTCQB: CRYO.OB - News) markets clinical processing products and services for Adipose (fat) Tissue and Adipose Derived Adult Stem Cells. CRYO's clinical processing and preservation platform supports the science and applications being discovered globally by providing the highest quality, clinically processed cells and assuring their sterility, viability and growth cap abilities, while at the same time developing cutting edge application, therapies and laboratory products and services for consumers and physicians.

New Anti-Aging Treatments Make it Easier to Turn Back the Clock

Newswise — SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (Feb. 7, 2012) – As we age, our skin undergoes a number of changes affecting its texture, volume and appearance. Fortunately, dermatologists can use fillers or lasers to correct the most notable signs of aging and can recommend skin care products with added ingredients that can further repair damaged skin.

“Many fillers for the aging face are now designed to create a fuller, more youthful appearance, instead of targeting only wrinkles or fine lines. In addition, facial rejuvenation with lasers is now more targeted, resulting in quicker results and less downtime,” said dermatologist Jenny Kim, MD, PhD, FAAD, associate professor of medicine, division of dermatology, University of California, Los Angeles. “Couple these treatments with the wide range of inexpensive skin care products with high-quality ingredients that are now available and patients can see dramatic results for many problem areas.”

New Fillers Pump up the Volume
While skin fillers and botulinum toxin are the most widely used procedures to rejuvenate the skin, Dr. Kim explained that the newest fillers being introduced will work as volumizers to replace the plumpness of the face that is lost with aging. Similar to how a balloon deflates over time, the face loses its roundness or fullness – the sign of a youthful appearance – with age.

“As much as lines and wrinkles make us look older, we’re learning that volume loss is just as critical,” said Dr. Kim. “Because of that, we’re looking at the aging process a little differently now and understanding the importance of replacing volume loss in the face to restore the fullness of a more youthful appearance.”

Most facial volume loss occurs after age 40, although some people start noticing this change in their late 30s. When this happens, areas of the face that were once full get depressed and are made more prominent by shadowing or darkening – making the face look older.

The newest filler introduced and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for facial rejuvenation is calcium hydroxylapatite. This filler restores facial volume and promotes collagen production, lasting for up to a year in most cases. This calcium hydroxylapatite filler is thicker than the hyaluronic acid fillers currently available, requiring less product to be used. However, Dr. Kim noted that the thickness of calcium hydroxylapatite also is associated with slightly higher adverse effects than hyaluronic acid fillers.

“I expect that we’ll see more advances in volumizing fillers in the near future, which should offer patients better results and fewer side effects,” said Dr. Kim. “Since each filler has unique advantages and disadvantages, it is important that patients discuss their expectations with their dermatologist to determine which procedure is best for them.”

Lasers Focus in on Skin Repair
New laser technologies offer another alternative to rejuvenate the skin with fewer side effects than earlier lasers. For example, fractional photothermolysis is a newer technology that works by targeting a very small percentage of the skin during each treatment, improving the damaged area and resulting in less adverse effects and downtime for the patient. Even pulsed-dye lasers, which have been around for a long time, have evolved so a dermatologist can treat visible broken blood vessels without bruising the skin by adjusting the laser to the patient’s skin.

“Laser technology continues to evolve and provide dermatologists with more options to target not only specific signs of aging, but specific cells responsible for age-related changes in our appearance,” said Dr. Kim. “In the future, lasers could even produce significant skin tightening or effectively target oil glands to improve acne, decrease oily skin and reduce large pores.”

Skin Care Products Offer Daily Dose of Vitamins and Antioxidants
Patients looking to supplement their treatments or those not yet ready for anti-aging treatments in a dermatologist’s office, but who would still like to see some improvement in their skin, can look for over-the-counter skin care products. Once sold exclusively at high-end department stores, a vast assortment of anti-aging products is now available at drug stores.

Dr. Kim recommends that patients look for ingredients such as retinoids (chemical compounds derived from vitamin A), peptides (smaller proteins that stimulate collagen production), and growth factors (compounds that act as chemical messengers between cells and play a role in collagen production). Added into inexpensive skin care products, these have the ability to repair skin damage from sun exposure or other toxic chemicals and, in some cases, stimulate collagen production.

Future Technologies to Watch
Another area of research for its potential anti-aging properties is stem cell technology. Since fat cells contain adult stem cells, their use for facial rejuvenation is being explored. The idea is that if stem cells from fat can be signaled to turn into skin structure, they could potentially make a person look younger by adding volume to depressed facial areas. Dr. Kim explained that while this is an exciting area of research, the efficacy and safety of this technology has not been tested in large clinical studies.

“Outstanding research by skin scientists and dermatologists is leading to better active ingredients in skin care products and advancements in filler and laser technology. As a result of these advances, there is now a range of products and treatments that can improve a person’s skin, no matter the budget.”

Short Delay in Treating Blood Pressure Safe for Diabetics: Study

(HealthDay News) -- Waiting up to a year to treat high blood pressure in a person with diabetes is probably not harmful, but waiting many years to get blood pressure under control could result in serious complications, new research indicates.

In the study, published online Jan. 9 in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, researchers from the University of Chicago suggested that the one-year delay could give patients time to make certain lifestyle changes that could help correct the problem, such as limiting their salt intake, exercising or losing weight.

The study also suggests that delays in lowering blood pressure among patients with diabetes are not uncommon. Some patients may not have access to health care, while others may not follow through on their treatment, they explained. Read more...

Gardens Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery Center is the First Practice in Florida to Offer Innovative TriPollar Wrinkle …

TriPollar wrinkle reduction treatments recently gained FDA clearance and are now available in Florida at the Gardens Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery Center. TriPollar anti-aging treatments deliver immediate visible and long –term results achieved by undergoing several treatment sessions. Treatment is completely non-invasive, painless and fast.

(PRWEB) January 31, 2012

The anti-aging solution that patients all over the world have discovered is for the first time available in the US. TriPollar treatments effectively rejuvenate skin in a quick and simple non-surgical and pain-free treatment. Visible results are evident after the very first session and long-term results are achieved by undergoing a series of treatments. TriPollar offers a convenient “walk-in, walk-out” treatment after which patients can immediately resume their daily routine. The treatment is safe and effective on all skin types and colors.

TriPollar treatments are based on TriPollar technology, an advanced 3rd generation radio-frequency based solution that safely and effectively reduces facial wrinkles. During treatment, TriPollar energy heats the skin from within using medically proven radiofrequency energy. The internal heat causes collagen fibers, which are the key structural components of the skin, to contract. This contraction results in immediate wrinkle reduction. Simultaneously, the heating causes fibroblast cells, the cells responsible for collagen production, to generate new collagen. The new collagen provides the skin with added flexibility which yields long term wrinkle reduction. The effectiveness of TriPollar technology has been demonstrated internationally in clinical studies and peer reviewed papers.

“As principle investigator of Pollogen’s FDA clinical trial, I am pleased to be the first practice to work with TriPollar technology in the USA. We performed 136 treatments in our FDA study without any side effects,” stated Steven Shapiro M.D., Vol. Associate Professor in the Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery at the University of Miami School of Medicine. “Patients reported a pleasant and pain-free experience and were satisfied with the results. I observed a significant reduction in wrinkles and overall, I am impressed by the immediate and long-term results achieved with the TriPollar technology and its strong safety profile.”

‘Anti-aging scarves’ and other talismans for the year of the Dragon

JAMBALAWatch with mantra to protect you from losing wealth

Feng shui specialist Maritess Allen walked into Manila Hotel’s Mabuhay Palace restaurant in a beaded honeysuckle-pink long gown toting a matching Hèrmes Birkin. Pink, she said, is one of the lucky colors for 2012.

Her long hair was set in flirty waves with reddish-copper highlights for good luck (orange and red are the other lucky colors). She rattled off her predictions, and assured us that the world will not end by Dec. 21, as indicated in the Mayan calendar.

“Does anyone here believe that?” she asked, laughing. She suggested that instead of worrying about Armageddon, people should be busy getting married—or making babies.

DRAGON Bangle “activates” the Dragon year.

The year of the Water Dragon is a very auspicious year to tie the knot, and kids born this year are considered lucky. It would take a 12-year cycle before the next Dragon year, so couples have a few months to beat the deadline for having a dragon baby (Chinese New Year in 2013 falls on Feb. 10).

POPULARITY Scarf

Allen, a Filipino, got into feng shui, or the ancient Chinese practice of “balancing energies,” because of a slew of bad luck—in her career, finances, personal life. Feng shui helped her gain luck. She eventually remarried and established World of Feng Shui, an amulet shop based in malls.

She is the go-to geomancer of businessmen like Washington Sycip and Regal Films’ Lily Monteverde; celebrities Kris Aquino and Boy Abunda; and Inquirer columnist and interior designer Tessa Prieto Valdes.

She has trained in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong and China on feng shui practices, and has a business degree from Ateneo Professional School.

Allen recently held talks in Manila Hotel and Shangri-La Cineplex and gave guidelines for 2012.

More sex scandals

WINDHORSE Scarf for power

Allen said 2012 is a “transformative year.” It will be more peaceful, with less violence and armed conflicts. Business is competitive and demanding, and it is a good year for real estate.

The Dragon Year has the “external romance flower star,” so there will be a lot of infidelity energy; those born in the year of the Dog must be extra careful. Marriages will be challenged by affairs and sex scandals.

Businesses with wood element will do best, such as plantations, agriculture, publishing and those involving flowers and plants. It is also a good year for earth industries like real estate and construction. Those with  water elements should be extra careful, like baking, shipping, transportation, fishing, alcohol and beverages.

RISING Blue Dragon

Metal industries will have average growth—jewelry, computers, airlines. Fire industries will have a smooth year, like the stock market, entertainment, lighting, food and restaurants, but be wary of investments made by the third quarter.

There is a lack of creativity chi (energy) in career and education: “Promotion is possible but competition is fierce.” Students must stay extra focused.

Health-wise, she advises to take extra care of the waist, ears, kidneys. Patriarchs, especially, need protection from physical harm.

Allen gave an overview for each animal sign: The Rat must “focus on mentally challenging activities than socializing.” The Ox may experience “a tougher year than 2011, but if things go well, it will be very well.” The Tiger will “experience a favorable year, but must choose auspicious months for important dates.”

8 SHAPE Fountain for wealth and money luck

It is a good year for the Rabbits; health, personal and professional relationships will be sound. Ironically, it is not a year for major changes for the Dragons and “obstacles and aggravations are likely.”

“Unique opportunities” will come for the Snake, although “things may not be as easy as last year.” Victory luck will accompany the Horse, and it will be a “fabulous year with fresh opportunities.”

The Sheep will have “plenty of success and achievements, but must control temper” and “relationships may suffer with the ‘quarrelsome star.’”  The Monkey, with an “impressive personal chi, will have wealth and success luck.” Roosters will have “a relatively smoother and trouble-free year.”

BEJEWELED Blue Dragon for power, wealth and success

Dogs must be careful because of the presence of “harmful stars”; timing should be right for major activities. The Boars will have success luck, but should be wary of robbery and betrayal.

Amulets

Abunda recently hosted the full-house Feng Shui Convention in Shangri-La Cineplex, Mandaluyong. He has been consulting with Allen for years, and attested to the power of feng shui which helped him gain show-biz success; he carries several amulets in his bag.

“The items make me feel good, but I make sure it is not in conflict with my faith. I put stuff around the house, but I am not consumed by it,” he said. “There is a certain lightness in carrying feng shui items.”

During the interview in Manila Hotel, Allen showed us her “pet,” a jewel-encrusted dragon ring the color of jade. It is one of her recommended Dragon year “activators,” along with the dragon bangle.

BEJEWELED Dragon with Crystal Globe for good fortune luck

She suggests cures for the signs that need protection from bad luck, such as figurines, jewelry, plaques. Among them: the 5-Element Pagoda with Tree of Life to avoid misfortunes; Medicine Buddha Script Pendant to keep illnesses at bay; and the Anti-Burglary Plaque.

There are also “enhancers” for more luck: the Evil Eye Amulet to guard from jealous colleagues, Wish-Fulfilling Shawl, Flower of Romance Keychain, wealth wallets, auspicious watches, and even an anti-aging scarf for a youthful aura!

MARITESS Allen and Tessa Prieto Valdes

For the home, she suggested putting a water element, like the Eight-Shape Fountain in the Southwest direction for wealth luck; Double Dragon Fountain for career and money luck; and the Rhino and Elephant Fountain to control robbery and violence.

Other dragon items from her shop are the Bejeweled Blue Dragon figurine for power, wealth and success; Dragon with Crystal Globe for good fortune; and Rising Blue Dragon, to be placed in a water pond.

Allen reminded that feng shui is just a guide and is not solely responsible for a person’s future. Also, the items should be bought by the person who would use them, and not given as a gift as you wouldn’t know “from where the money used to buy the item was sourced.” It is also best to retire the amulets used in the previous years because they already served a purpose. These could be kept in a specific case, or buried.

The Chinese New Year countdown with Maritess Allen and the Grand Chinese New Year bazaar will be on Jan. 22-23 in the Tent City of Manila Hotel.

Metabolic Syndrome May Raise Risk of Peripheral Artery Disease

(HealthDay News) -- Women with metabolic syndrome are at high risk of developing peripheral artery disease, a condition that dramatically raises the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Using data on more than 27,000 women taking part in the Women's Health Study, researchers identified participants with metabolic syndrome, a collection of symptoms including abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, low HDL ("good") cholesterol, high triglyceride levels and insulin resistance.

Women were considered to have metabolic syndrome if they had three or more of those symptoms.

Women with metabolic syndrome had a 62 percent increased risk of developing peripheral artery disease (PAD) compared to those without metabolic syndrome. Each metabolic syndrome symptom raised the risk of PAD by 20 percent, the study found.

About 8 million Americans have peripheral artery disease, which typically affects the arteries in the pelvis and legs. Symptoms include cramping and pain or tiredness in the hip muscles and legs when walking or climbing stairs, although not everyone who has PAD is symptomatic. The pain usually subsides during rest. Study review shows vitamin D, cod liver oil very effective

Study review shows vitamin D, cod liver oil very effective at preventing and treating tuberculosis
by: Jonathan Benson

Sometimes the old fashioned ways of treating disease are still the safest and most effective. A recent review of an 1848 study conducted at the former Hospital for Consumption in Chelsea, UK, now known as the Royal Brompton Hospital (RBH), has found that cod liver oil, which is rich in vitamin D, is still an effective treatment for tuberculosis.

Professor Sir Malcolm Green, who used to work at RBH but has since retired, unearthed the old study which involved over 1,000 patients with tuberculosis, a contagious bacterial infection that can lead to death. One group composed of 542 patients was given standard treatment along with cod liver oil, while another group of 535 patients was given only the standard treatment.

At the conclusion of the study, doctors saw stabilization of the disease in 18 percent of the patients given cod liver oil, while only six percent of those in the control group saw improvement. Thirty-three percent of patients in the control group also ended up dying, compared to only 19 percent of those in the cod liver oil group. Read more...

Science Probes How Probiotic Yogurts Affect Your Gut

(HealthDay News) -- Researchers have put the health promises of popular probiotic yogurts to the test and found they may alter the way in which food is metabolized.

But whether that means probiotic foods and supplements can improve your health remains to be seen, they said.

"Federal regulatory agencies are increasingly interested in evaluating all the health claims being made by probiotic food manufacturers," said study co-author Dr. Jeffrey Gordon, a biologist and director of the Center for Genome Sciences at Washington University School of Medicine, in St. Louis. "So what we did was try to develop a model for the human gut that can give us a way to measure the effects."

What they saw, Gordon said, "is that adding a few billion of these microbial organisms to a gut community already containing tens of trillions of bacteria can, in fact, influence the metabolism of food ingredients. The structure of the microbe community doesn't change. But the function does."

Funding for the research came from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Danone Research, an arm of the food conglomerate that makes Dannon probiotic yogurt Activia. Read more...

New Heart Valve Repair System Tested for Safety

(HealthDay News) -- A new method of repairing leaking mitral heart valves appears safe, a small study shows.

In the new study, researchers tested a reversible implant called the Percutaneous Transvenous Mitral Annuloplasty (PTMA) system, which is installed via a catheter.

In the heart, the mitral valve controls the flow of blood from the left atrium into the left ventricle (from the upper left chamber into the lower left chamber). A leaking mitral valve causes blood to flow back into the left atrium. This condition can worsen existing heart failure or cause congestive heart failure, according to a news release from the American Heart Association.

Currently, mitral valve repair requires opening the chest and putting the patient on a heart-lung machine. This method increases the risk of heart attack and stroke during surgery, as well as post-surgery risks such as lung problems, irregular heartbeat and infection, the news release noted.

The PTMA system changes the shape of the mitral annulus (a fibrous ring encircling the mitral valve) and prevents blood leakage by allowing the valve's two leaflets to close more tightly. Read more...

White tea, witch hazel proven by scientists to reduce inflammation and fight cancer

by: Tara Green

Rose, witch hazel and white tea may sound like the refrain from a folk song, but the trio of natural substances delivers both health and skin benefits through their ability to halt inflammation say British researchers. Health issues including cancer, arthritis and diabetes have all been linked to inflammation, which is also responsible for premature signs of aging.

Health and Beauty Benefits
The recent research project involved an unusual collaboration between academic researchers from London's Kingston University and scientists from the British beauty product firm Neal's Yard Remedies.
