Ultimate makeover needed to make Philippines

By Joyce Socao-Alumno and Ramil Gulle Philippine Daily Inquirer

Long-time friends Dr. Vicky Belo (medical director) and Dr. Philip Buag (asst. medical director) are both hands-on in the operations of The Belo Medical Groups nine clinics.

There are those who say that Philippines has everything it needs to become Asias beauty capitalWestern-trained plastic surgeons and specialists in Aesthetic Medicine; advanced medical facilities; competent and caring nurses and other health professionals; lower cost of cosmetic and aesthetic procedures; proficiency in English; and relaxing, picturesque, tropical destinations for patients recovering from treatments.

While medical tourism in the Philippines has not taken off as soon as the healthcare industry has hoped, there is still a lot of optimism. The Philippine healthcare sectors biggest players continue to invest in technology, equipment, and quality professionals, believing in the countrys huge potential as a medical tourism destination.

Fortunately, while the Philippines growth as a medical tourism destination has been slow, it remains steady, consistent, and encouraging for investors. It would be good to look at the strengths that the Philippines possesses in terms of beauty, cosmetic, and aesthetic treatments as well as the challenges it needs to hurdle in order for it to become the beauty capital that the industry is aiming for.

Aesthetic centers

The Philippines top government and private hospitals are equipped with the most modern medical equipment available today. In general, the Philippines top hospitals would have equipment that are at par with, if not better, than hospitals in the US and Europe. Such equipment are acquired from the same top suppliers that the best hospitals in other countries also source from.

The countrys top hospitals are also accredited, or in the process of being accredited as conforming to international quality standards, by respected international bodies under the International Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQua) like JCI; NABH International; and Accreditation Canada.

At least three major hospitals, Makati Medical Center; The Medical City; and St. Lukes Medical Center are all offering cosmetic, aesthetic, dermatological, and anti-aging treatments using the most modern equipment and the latest procedures. Their surgeons and other specialists are all board-certified, with many of them affiliated with medical organizations in the US.

Recent examples of how advanced Philippine hospitals have become include the upgrades done by The Medical City and Makati Medical Center. Both have recently established the most advanced stem cell facilities in the Philippines: The Medical Citys Institute for Personalized Molecular Medicine (IPMM) and the Makati Medical Centers Cellular Therapeutics Laboratory. These stem cell facilities process the stem cells used in their aesthetic and anti-aging treatments. Both facilities are at par with those found in the U.S. and Europe.

Skinspirations Case Study Proves Non-Surgical Procedures Get Results

Clearwater medical cosmetic center Skinspirations wants to make the public aware of the non-surgical procedures that offer rejuvenation and help improve skin quality.

TAMPA BAY, FL (PRWEB) November 19, 2012

With expertise and innovative technology, non-surgical procedures can offer benefits to patients that surgery cant, such as improving skin quality and restoring youthful proportions.

At age 60, Carla, like many women, wanted to look younger, so she went to Dr. Elliott in April, 2008. What started with Botox for Carlas crow's feet and frown lines between her eyebrows and chin led to Juvederm, a dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid (a naturally-occurring sugar in human joints and skin that provides support and cushioning).

Over three visits during August and September, Carla had a total of eight syringes of Juvederm Ultra Plus to her upper cheeks, the nasolabial folds, along her jawline, and above her upper lip. She also had a series of Laser Genesis treatments, which provided subtle collagen stimulation and skin tone improvement.

Experiencing successful results, Carla wants to help others understand that rejuvenating the face is a process rather than a single treatment, and she is an advocate for non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

Its all about educating my patients, commented Dr. Elliott. At Skinspirations, its not a one-time deal where I never see them again. It takes time and patience to see results, and with our expertise and individualized plans, we only offer what is needed to reach the clients goals, whether they want to look five years younger or just feel better about their appearance overall.

Skinspirations offers a wide variety of non-surgical procedures, such as:

Botox and Dysport;

Injectable fillers;

The Baseline of Health® Foundation Today Announced a Thanksgiving Holiday Gift to The Public: A Free Anti-Aging Report

Jon Barrons free report reveals important information such as what you need to change in your diet and how your thoughts matter...to what key supplements work to naturally reverse aging at the cellular level.

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) November 19, 2012

The foundation receives hundreds of requests each month about how to reverse the ravages of aging, naturally. It found that most consumers are tired of wasting money on creams and potions that promise youth, but fail to deliver. Other options involve invasive surgery that is costly and risky. Jon Barron, the foundations director and health researcher, answered the growing demand for natural health information concerning aging by writing a comprehensive, fully-researched report for consumers.

Probably no other area in alternative health is more subject to over-promising and under-delivering than anti-aging medicine, especially with the Baby Boomer generation now solidly into retirement age. Were talking about every magic bullet under the sun, from face rejuvenation creams to human growth hormone supplements, said Jon Barron in this report. If only it were that simple! But aging is not the result of any single factor, but is the cumulative result of a number of factors.

Jon Barrons anti-aging report reveals important information such as why our bodies are designed to age and die and how aging takes place at multiple levels in our bodies both micro and macro. He then explores the numerous studies that detail exactly how you can reverse both the micro level factors that cause the cells of our bodies to become non-functional over time and the age activated programs such as hormonal changes -- that automatically kick in to age our bodies at the macro level. And finally, Barron reveals exactly how to slow down, and even reverse, these factors and the everyday steps anyone can take to live a longer, more vibrant life.

Testosterone's 'fountain of youth'?

John Freiburger, 48, says people have noticed the difference in his energy levels since he began taking testosterone.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

(CNN) -- For thousands of years, explorers have been searching for the Fountain of Youth. Legend has it the elusive fountain contains a restorative source that brings endless vitality to those who drink from its pool.

No one knows what the source is, exactly. It's been called everything from the "water of life" to the "elixir of immortality."

These days, anti-aging specialists simply refer to it as "T."

You'd think T, or testosterone, was pure magic from its advertised results: increased energy, better mental concentration, less fat, more muscle, fewer sleepless nights and a higher sex drive. But experts say altering your body's natural hormone levels can be dangerous if not done properly.

As more FDA-approved products hit the market, the baby boomer generation is taking note. In 2011, consumers spent approximately $1.6 billion on prescription testosterone therapies, almost triple the amount spent in 2006, according to market research company IMS Health.

Dr. Harvey Bartnof is the founder of the California Longevity & Vitality Medical Institute. His practice focuses on age management medicine and hormone replacement therapies for both men and women. He says patients come to him to slow the aging process; they want to remain active and engaged as they grow older.

"We have medications that help people stay alive longer, but the quality of life declines," Bartnof says. "People would rather not go down the pathway of ... mom, dad if they don't have to."

Internationally Recognized Hair Loss Expert Dr. Alan J. Bauman was Featured Speaker at Paris Anti-Aging and Hair …

Dr. Alan J. Bauman discussed new technology and trends at the European Masters in Aesthetic & Anti-Aging Medicine conference in Paris.

Boca Raton, Florida (PRWEB) November 15, 2012

Among Baumans several presentations, FUE Mega Sessions: Pearls and Pitfalls in Achieving Maximum Graft Yield Using Minimally Invasive Hair Transplant and Harvesting Methods, and FUE Trends: The Minimally Invasive Hair Transplant Revolution, were featured as part of the EMAAs 2nd International Hair Surgery Master Course (IHSMC), hosted by renowned hair transplant surgeon Dr. Pierre Bouhanna. Along with FUE technology, Bauman, who is a board-certified hair restoration surgeon, discussed mechanisms of low-level laser therapy including the latest at-home breakthrough laser devices. Bauman was one of the first US physicians to use laser therapy as an integral part of a multi-therapy approach to treating hair loss and thinning for both male and female patients. The new LaserCap is a portable, wearable laser unit that contains 224 laser diodes to stimulate weak and thinning follicles at the cellular level and improve blood flow in order to help patients achieve thicker, fuller healthier looking hair. The Nutreve personal laser is another new cordless and rechargeable consumer device with 35 true laser diodes.

Minimally-invasive NeoGraft FUE hair transplantation and low level laser devices like LaserCap are the absolute cutting-edge of hair loss treatments and its exciting to present those options to the progressive doctors in the field, said Dr. Bauman, who is founder and medical director of the Bauman Medical Group in Boca Raton. The Paris EMAA conference was a unique opportunity to share these new treatments and successes with a global audience of colleagues. This allows us the chance to both teach and learn from each other to better help our hair loss patients, while at the same time, raise awareness about the advanced new treatments and techniques available.

View photos and a slideshow from the event.

NeoGraft FUE:

FUE is a less-invasive harvesting of hair follicles and follicular units individually; eliminating the linear or strip harvest approach. The highly delicate and technically challenging FUE procedure has been available for several years, but prior to the advent of mechanical instruments like NeoGraft, it was difficult for hair transplant surgeons to accurately and efficiently perform large minimally-invasive hair transplant sessions.

The FDA-cleared NeoGraft (also known as the S.A.F.E.R. device by Medicamat in Europe and Asia) is a dramatic advancement over previous manual FUE methods which were more time consuming and less accurate. NeoGraft/S.A.F.E.R. allows surgeons to harvest and transplant large numbers of hair follicles in considerably less time for patients and without the tell-tale linear scar. Because recovery from NeoGraft FUE is faster, more comfortable and less restrictive, most people are back to their regular routines - including athletic workouts - within just a few days.

FUE is an extremely effective surgical option for patients that allows for a quicker, more comfortable recovery, less post-op activity restrictions, as well as avoiding the tell-tale linear scar associated with traditional linear strip-harvest hair transplants, explained Bauman. As we showed in our lectures, it takes meticulous preparation and teamwork to transplant more than 3,000 follicular units in a Mega-FUE transplant session.

According to ISHRS statistics, FUE surgeries have risen in demand dramatically over the past several years around the world and large Mega-FUE sessions will likely be the next trend.

Stanford University Study Finds Evidence that BroadBand Light Treatment Promotes Youthful Skin on a Molecular Level

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

A new study recently published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology shows that Sciton BroadBand Light (BBL) treatments can change the expression of genes associated with the aging process to more closely resemble young skin. The study supports the hypothesis that regulators of aging can be altered in human skin using BBL technology to provide a functional change, rather than just a cosmetic mimic of youthful appearance. BBL treatments promote the appearance of youthful skin. This study reveals that the appearance of younger skin may be due to the differences observed in gene expression patterns of aged skin becoming more like young skin. Treatments from the study were performed on the FDA-cleared Sciton Joule using the BBL module.*

Led by dermatologist Dr. Anne Lynn S. Chang of the Stanford University School of Medicine, the study (Rejuvenation of Gene Expression Pattern of Aged Human Skin by BroadBand Light Treatment) reveals the molecular changes that are induced by BBL, a popular treatment made by Sciton for improving the appearance of acne, sun spots, freckles and vascular conditions. BBL treatments are requested by patients for promoting a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance. Previous studies have shown that animal models can exhibit gene expression changes to become more youthful. Dr. Changs study is the first to show a similar correlation in human skin treated with BBL.

As an industry, to find a clinically sound solution for human anti-aging is critical, said Dr. Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas, board certified dermatologist, attending physician at Lenox Hill Hospital and Yale/New Haven VA Hospital, and Assistant Clinical Professor at Yale University School of Medicine. As a practicing physician in the field of dermatology, it is exciting to know there is a safe, light based treatment with groundbreaking clinical evidence supporting anti-aging and the reversal of skin damage available to our patients.

An additional study, submitted for publication by Dr. Patrick H. Bitter, Jr. of Advanced Aesthetic Dermatology, a well-known dermatologist and co-author of the JID study, takes this groundbreaking research further and explores the practical application and patient results of BBL treatments. Dr. Bitters study focuses on the ability to improve the appearance of aging skin with long-term and regular interval treatments with BBL.

The JID study is an important first step to prove that BBL treatments are a viable option for anti-aging, said Dr. Bitter. In my upcoming study, we provide clinical evidence on patients who have had BBL and have enjoyed younger looking skin over the long-term. I look forward to sharing these demonstrated results with my colleagues and patients worldwide in the near future.

As the developer of the BBL technology, Sciton remains committed to investments not only in the equipment but in the science required to inform the development of meaningful applications for it. The BBL has an unsurpassed reputation for delivering clinically important results, said Sciton co-founder and President, Dan Negus, Ph.D. These basic science and clinical biomedical studies demonstrate another important validation for the dermatologic community of the sound scientific basis of the BBL technology and the results it produces.

The studys additional authors are Dr. Howard Y. Chang and Nicole A. Rapicavoli, both of Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Stanford University, and Dr. Kun Qu and Dr. Meihong Lin, both of Stanford University. To read the full text of the study, please visit http://www.nature.com/jid/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/jid2012287a.html.

7UP Sued Over Antioxidant Claims

Soda as a health food? The Center for Science in the Public Interest begs to differ.

Although the label on 7UP's new line of antioxidant regular and diet sodas claims "There's never been a more delicious way to cherry pick your antioxidant!" the consumer group has cried foul and it's suing the soda's maker, Dr Pepper Snapple Group, for making false health claims.

CSPI said the drinks contain not a single drop of fruit juice and only a "small amount" of added vitamin E -- which the group claims has no proven antioxidant benefits anyway.

"Nondiet varieties of 7UP, like other sugary drinks, promote obesity, diabetes, tooth decay, and other serious health problems, and no amount of antioxidants could begin to reduce those risks," said CSPI Executive Director Michael F. Jacobson. "Adding an antioxidant to a soda is like adding menthol to a cigarette -- neither does anything to make an unhealthy product healthy."

This isn't the first time the labeling practices have attracted the attention of consumer advocacy groups. Here's the low down on the 7UP sodas and seven other popular foods whose health claims have been called into question.

Despite pictures of wholesome fruit dancing across the label, the new line of 7UP antioxident sodas contains no fruit, accoding to its maker. True, they do contain a small amount of vitamin E. But any purported health benefits of antioxidants are suggested by studies involving the consumption of whole fruits and vegetables -- not guzzling artificially fortified fizzy drinks.

It's not as if the sodas are packed with other healthful ingredients either. The 7UP Cherry Antioxidant flavor, for example, lists water, high-fructose corn syrup, citric acid, potassium benzoateand the controversial dye Red 40 on its label. A 12-ounce serving contains 9 teaspoons (38 grams) of sugars and 140 calories. And diet versions contain the artificial sweeteners aspartame and acesulfame potassium.

CSPI litigation director Steve Gardner said he's looking forward "to having 7UP go under oath and testify before a judge or a jury that this disease-promoting sugar water is actually a source of healthy antioxidants."

A spokesman for Dr Pepper Snapple Group said the soda "is properly labeled under all FDA regulations so that consumers can make an informed choice." But the company said it already had plans to reformulate and relabel the soda by February 2013.

"The new Cherry 7UP will not contain antioxidants to be consistent with the formulation and appearance of other 7UP products," spokesman Chris Barnes said in a statement.

Makeup from Karl Lagerfeld and Nars, ‘powerful anti-aging,’ and exotic scents

Beauty picks for Holiday 2012 By Cheche V. Moral Philippine Daily Inquirer

KARL Lagerfeld with Mon Shu Girl, the manga character he created for Shu Uemura

The big beauty launches happen in the run-up to the holidays. And fans of makeup, fragrance and skincare have a lot to look forward to in the next few weeks.

Karl Lagerfeld x Shu Uemura

Shu Uemura unveiled recently its long-awaited makeup collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld. Umu, Dusit Thanis Japanese restaurant, was awash in red Tuesday to usher in Mon Shu (My Darling) Girl, a Japanese manga-inspired character created by the fashion legend to represent his image for the collection.

Mon Shu sports a distinctly Asian blunt bob and has tiny red lips and big, red eyesmysterious rather than sinister, according to her creatorand is dressed in Lagerfelds likeness: white shirt and a black tie.

Nars x Andy Warhol Edie Set in 16-mm film canister

Lagerfeld has had a longtime affinity with the Japanese makeup brand. He said in promotional interviews that he began buying Shu Uemura eye shadows some 20 years ago. He uses the palette like he would use pastel crayons to color his sketches and designs.

I have never found this quality of pigment anywhere else, Lagerfeld said. I have used many other big brands, but Shu Uemuras are very refined and so fresh. I love this black that gives depth to my designs, and the red is very passionate. I use this red to make up the models in my designs and create the silhouette. In Japan the reds are always really vivid.

Lagerfeld met Shu Uemura in 2006, a year before the brands founder died. I really liked his pioneer spirit and the sparkling energy in his eyes, Lagerfeld said. I do feel that everyone has to invent his/her own thing, and I think Mr. Uemura created something that no one else could.

Anti-aging supplement research has Tampa bay ties

GIBSONTON (FOX 13) -

Some people spend hours in the gym and watch their diet, all to look and feel better. But others say they're slowing the aging process by taking a simple pill, and the research behind it has ties to the Tampa Bay area.

Zebra Fish raised at Gibsonton's Segrest Farms were used to help researchers learn more about diseases affecting humans.

"Adult fish have a really impressive ability to regenerate not just injured cells, but neuro cells, like neurons, and that's come under the spotlight for Alzheimer's research and other degenerative diseases," says Marketing Director Mike Tuccinardi. "Their chromosomes are similar to humans."

That ability to regenerate comes from the tip of their chromosomes: protective caps like the ends of a shoelace secure each end. Those caps are called telomeres, and are the reason some patients swear by a supplement called TA-65.

Dr. Marvin Lagstein, 65, says, "I feel good. I think that I look better than my age, and to me -- I just have a sense that it's working."

Lagstein, 69, is a dentist. Every day, he pops a capsule filled with an energy boosting herb used in traditional Chinese medicine.

Dr. Florence Comite also buys it and says, " It's not quite the fountain of youth in a pill -- but what it does do, is it protects the DNA ."

As babies, we also have protective caps on our chromosomes. As we age, they unravel. Telomeres shorten, possibly exposing cells to damage.

TA-65 supporters claim the supplement not only stops the telomeres from getting shorter, it actually grows them back.
