Saving Earth: Is veganism good for the planet? Here’s why the solution is not that simple – MEAWW

Planet Earth is in dire need of solutions. Astronomer Carl Sagan once said that we have a responsibility "to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known." Our campaign Saving Earth focuses on nature and wildlife conservation and this column will feature stories on the pressing needs of our planet and hopefulness of our fight.

While the fossil fuel industry takes a chunk of the rap for its carbon footprint, meat and dairy industries aren't far behind. In fact, scientists say that avoiding meat and dairy is the single biggest way the average person can contribute to the fight against anthropogenic climate change. Meat production is the primary source of methane emissions a greenhouse gas 86 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period and beef cattle produced over 70 percent of it via enteric fermentation (belching and farting) in 2016. Dairy production accounted for another 25 percent that year.

A 2018reportfrom the EPA found that methane emissions from beef cattle increased in the United States by nearly 2 percent between 1990 and 2016, driven in part by increases in the cattle population.Animal-based foods tend to have a higher footprint than plant-based. Lamb and cheese both emit more than 20 kilograms CO2-equivalents per kilogram. Poultry and pork have lower footprints but are still higher than most plant-based foods, at 6 and 7 kg CO2-equivalents, respectively.

Most greenhouse gas emissions result from land-use change and from processes at the farm stage. Farm-stage emissions include processes such as the application of fertilizers both organic ("manure management") and synthetic and enteric fermentation (the production of methane in the stomachs of cattle). Combined, land use and farm-stage emissions account for more than 80% of the footprint for most foods.

So, the argument for going vegan is quite clear. Veganism avoids meat and dairy and has been touted as the way to go if you want to help save the planet, in addition to getting healthier. However, veganism has its downfalls too, and what it comes to is that the unsustainable consumption of food vegan or not that needs to be addressed.

For instance, many vegan-favorite foods are not as green as one might think. Quinoa a vegan superfood that is popular in veganism is often flown halfway across the planet from where it is farmed in South America. The carbon footprint from that air travel is often more than eating meat that is locally sourced. Delicate fruits like blueberries and strawberries, for example, are often imported to Europe and the US by air to fill gaps left when local fruits are out of season.

Research by Angelina Frankowska, who studies sustainability at the University of Manchester, recently found that asparagus eaten in the UK has the highest carbon footprint compared to any other vegetable eaten in the country, with 5.3kg of carbon dioxide being produced for every kilogram of asparagus, mainly because it is imported by air from Peru.

Another vegan favorite is the avocado it is a versatile fruit that can be used in toasts, milkshakes and salads, to name a few. However, avocado production has an emissions footprint of 846.36g CO2, almost twice the size of one kilo of bananas (480g). This is because of the complexities involved in growing, ripening and transporting the popular green fruit.

Avocados are mostly grown in the tropical southern hemisphere, in countries such as Chile, Peru, or South Africa, and need to be imported to the countries in the global north, where avocado consumption is popular. They also use huge amounts of water in production. A single mature tree in California, for example, needs up to 209 liters (46 gallons) every day in the summer more than what is needed to fill a large bathtub. In some areas, like Peru and Chile, the growing demand for the crop has led toillegal extraction from riversand has been blamed for anincreasing water-shortage crisis.

There are, of course, other factors to consider as well. Artificial fertilizers, for example, account for at least 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the industry. The production of synthetic fertilizer emits carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane into the atmosphere, while their use on fields releases nitrous oxide, another potent greenhouse gas.

Agricultural practices such as the tilling of fields also release large volumes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and help to speed up erosion. The truth, however, is that the current lifestyles and consumption rates are far too unsustainable to be good for the planet. Reducing meat consumption is certainly important to address this concern, and while going vegan might help, we need to be more mindful of choosing what we eat.

CHANGING WORLD

(Part 1)

Modesty aside, at age 81 I think I have stronger immunity against COVID-19 than many people I know in their fifties or sixties who have been smoking or drinking heavily, sleeping only six hours a day on the average, and indulging in unhealthy diets. I have good genes (my mother lived up to 102 years of age). I have tried to live a healthy life style at least for the last 20 years of my life. That is why I felt aggrieved when under the General Community Quarantine (GCQ), I could not move as freely as those below 60 years of age. I really think there has been no scientific foundation for the classification of people by age for purposes of the various stages of quarantine under the global pandemic. I was glad to learn that the World Health Organization (WHO) had declared that 65 years of age is still considered young. According to new research done, human age is now divided as follows: 0 to 17 years of age underage; 18 to 65 years of age youth/young individuals; 66 to 79 middle aged; 80 to 99 years old elderly/senior; and 100+ years of age long-lived senior.

In fact, medical research also has shown that the most dangerous health-related threats to life occur during the age range of 70 to 80. If one survives this age range, the probability of his living much longer is quite high. We are seeing this in Japan where more and more people, especially women, are living beyond 100 years.

I recently read a review of a book by an economist and a management expert, respectively, Andrew J Scott and Lynda Gatton. The former is professor of economics at London Business School and a consulting scholar at Stanford universitys Centre on Longevity, and the latter is a professor of management practice at the London Business School. They wrote The New Long Life: A Framework for Flourishing in a Changing World. Their previous work, The 100-Year Life provided very valuable insights into the phenomenon of increased longevity. The authors have exploded the myth of the so-called three-stage life. Although speaking of three stages of life made sense before more and more people are able to live up to their eighties and beyond, today these three stages hardly make sense.

When fewer people lived beyond their sixties, the first stage was traditionally spent growing up and getting educated. The second involved working in an occupation or profession, earning money and starting a family. The third, usually at the start of their sixties, was devoted to what then was called retirement. Today, the average life expectancy of Filipinos is 71.16 years (2019). The Filipino female lives on the average to 75.39 years as compared to the male life expectancy of 67.12 years. Comparative figures in more developed countries such as Japan and most Western European countries are beyond 80 years of age.

As Scott and Gatton wrote in their books, the three-stage life generally worked in the old days when life expectancy was shorter. It allowed many to support a family, buy a house, and look forward to a pension. Today, relatively fewer young people can afford to purchase a house. Many of the elderly, even in advanced countries like the United States, do not have adequate pensions. It is clear that the three-stage life has broken down.

Governments, realizing this change, are raising retirement age from 65 to 70. Unfortunately, the majority of employers are acting as though the three-stage life is still applicable to the present generations. In the Philippines, either by choice or necessity, complete retirement from work is the exception rather than the rule among those who officially retire at age either at 60 or 65. I am no exception. As long as they are healthy enough, people of my generation continue to be employed, many of them still receiving remuneration for their work as consultants, members of the boards of directors of different corporations, part-time professors or instructors, and a good number in voluntary work in charitable foundations or associations.

We continue to work because we have been advised by medical experts that stopping to be engaged in some work or another is the surest way to have both our body and our mind deteriorate rapidly. Keeping ourselves active in some form of work or another is necessary for bodily and mental health. But more importantly, we believe what St. John Paul II wrote in his encyclical Laborem Exercens (On Human Work): Work is a good thing for man a good thing for his humanity because through work, man not only transforms nature, adapting it to his own needs, but he also achieves fulfilment as a human being. In a sense, he becomes more a human being. The knowledge that by means of work man shares in the work of creation constitutes the most profound motive for understanding it.

The Saint of Ordinary Life St. Josemaria Escriva as St. John Paul II called him, had preached and written most eloquently about the value of work to human fulfilment and happiness. It was from him that I learned that no one ever retires from work. The spirituality of the Catholic institution Opus Dei that he founded is very much identified with the sanctification of ordinary work: that the ordinary Christian attains sanctity in the middle of the world primarily through work by sanctifying the work itself, sanctifying himself as he works, and sanctifying others through his work.

In one of his widely read books, Christ Is Passing By, he wrote: Work is part and parcel of mans life on earth. It involves effort, weariness, exhaustion: signs of the suffering and struggle which accompany human existence and which point to the reality of sin and the need for redemption But in itself work is not a penalty or a curse or a punishment: those who speak of it that way have not understood sacred Scripture properly.

It is time for us Christians to shout from the rooftops that work is a gift from God and that it makes no sense to classify men differently, according to their occupation, as if some jobs were nobler than others. Work, all work, bears witness to the dignity of man, to his dominion over creation. It is an opportunity to develop ones personality. It is a bond of union with others, the way to support ones family, a means of aiding in the improvement of the society in which we live and in the progress of all humanityFor a Christian these horizons extend and grow wider. For work is a participation in the creative work of God. When He created man and blessed him, He said: Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and conquer it. Be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of Heaven, and all living animals on the earth.

These are some of the most eloquent words ever written about work which should convince anyone never to stop working no matter how old he may be. Retirement should not be in the vocabulary of anyone who is convinced that work is the best way to carry out Gods will for him on earth so as to be eternally happy with Him in Heaven. To be continued.

The Best Retinol Products and How to Use Them – Highsnobiety

If youre new to the world of retinol products, one way to think about them is investing in the long-term. Typically, Retinol, part of the Vitamin A family, is used in skincare products to speed up cellular turnover (which slows as we get older) and to fight the signs of aging: fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven tone.

Some of the best retinol products today offer much more than anti-aging benefits: they moisturize the skin, they brighten the skin, and even address dark spots and acne scars (thanks, technology). So if you think retinol products are just for old(er) folks, youre wrong. You dont need to see, say, wrinkles on your face before you start incorporating retinol into your skincare routine. The sooner the better is wise, as a preventative measure.

Some retinol products can be used morning or night, but if you have sensitive skin, opt for nightly use. This is because the powerful ingredient can leave your skin dry, flaky, and extra sensitive to the sun be sure to use an SPF in the morning (which you should be doing anyway even if youre working from home). When you first start using retinol, give your skin time to build a tolerance to it. You can start by using it twice per week, and then increase usage if needed. Of course, like with any skincare product, read the instructions and consult with your dermatologist for individual concerns.

To point you in the right direction, we scoured the market for the best retinol products from the ones beauty insiders use to medicine cabinet flexes, clean beauty options, and more.

Famed beauty blogger Jackie Aina has blessed us with many things: a thorough skincare routine, telling it like it is on her YouTube channel, and introducing us to Guidance to Glow. Created by Fenya Abramian, Ainas esthetician, Guidance to Glow offers a range of medical-grade skincare products that are vegan safe and chemical-, cruelty-, and paraben-free, including her powerful retinol serum. Retinol Radiance combines retinol and alpha hydroxy acid to improve skin texture and promote cellular turnover.

Shani Darden boasts Chrissy Teigen and Jessica Alba as some of her clients. Shes one of the most recommended estheticians in Tinseltown, and her Retinol Reform serum is what started it all. Its formula is gentler than the average retinol product, which means youll experience less drying and irritation while fighting fine lines, blemishes, and even acne scars. The serum also contains lactic acid, which helps with brightening skin, a benefit youll see sooner than later.

You know those skincare brands youve only vaguely heard of because youve seen them at your dermatologists office? skinbetter science is one of them. Youll be required to enroll to make a purchase, which involves selecting your dermatologist (if theyre an authorized partner). The AlphaRet Overnight Cream uses alpha hydroxy acid and a retinoid, as well as moisture, which creates a gentle yet effective product that also prevents the dryness associated with a retinoid. Start by using it twice per week at night, and build up use if needed.

Natura Biss is a great choice if you want to target more than just fighting wrinkles and unevenness. With collagen, proteins, retinol, and elastin to name just a few ingredients the Essential Shock Intense Retinol Fluid effectively hydrates and protects skin from premature aging.

Formulated with ingredients including Japanese pearl and golden silk essence, this product does more than broadcast luxury it works. It contains a potent and highly stabilized (read: very safe) retinol that targets deep wrinkles. The Wrinkle Smoothing Serum Supreme can be layered with other serums and used in the morning (dont forget to apply SPF), but if you have sensitive skin, opt for nightly use.

If clean beauty is a priority for you, there are natural alternatives to retinol. One of them is wild cherry oil, which targets fine lines and unevenness in the skin. Anju Rupal, the creator of Abhati Suisse, draws upon her Indian origins and uses ingredients that are sourced from tribal farmers in India, of which many are harvested exclusively for the brand. Her Lalitya Whipped Face Cream is a lightweight moisturizer a nice alternative to a serum that hydrates and provides the benefits of a retinol using various plants and oils, including wild cherry oil.

DoorDashs Vegan Burger Orders Have Increased 443% – LIVEKINDLY

Food delivery service DoorDash has reported a major increase in vegan burger orders.

The company unveiled this years hottest food trends in its newly released DoorDash Deep Dish report.

The mid-year report outlines top takeout and cooking trends using order data from January 1 to June 30. It also used data from a national consumer survey, which polled 2,000 Americans on their eating and cooking habits during the pandemic.

Research shows demand for plant-based foods is on the rise. The survey found that those between the ages of 18 and 24 ranked plant-based foods as the most appetizing. Plant-based burgers were especially popular. The food delivery service reported a 443 percent increase in vegan burger orders this year.

According to the DoorDash Deep Dish report, food habits are changing amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Twenty percent of the surveys respondents said they have seriously considered veganism. Six percent say they currently are or have been vegan in the past.

Vegetable pasta was ranked the most appetizing plant-based dish. On the contrary, tofu dishes were ranked the least appetizing.

The study also found that plant-based meat, like vegan burgers, is more popular among millennials. Those between the ages of 18 and 24 ranked plant-based meat as being more appetizing than vegetable pasta, which was more popular among other generations.

New data from the Plant Based Foods Association (PBFA), released in June, backs up DoorDashs study.

PBFA is a trade organization that represents some of the biggest vegan food companies. The data, produced with retail analytics firm SPINS, found that panic-buying amid the outbreak has contributed to a surge in US vegan food sales.

In the 16 weeks leading up to April 19, sales of plant-based cheeses, meats, tofu, and tempeh outpaced all other food sales. Compared to the same time period last year, vegan food sales were up by 90 percent.

Plant-based meat sales were 50 percent higher during the peak-panic buying period compared to animal-based meat sales. Dairy-free cheese sales surged 95 percent during the same timeframe.

In a statement, Julie Emmett, PBFAs senior director of retail partnerships, said the data proves consumers are increasingly turning to plant-based food options.

Even after the highest panic-buying period, plant-based foods growth remains strong, proving that this industry has staying power, she said.

From too much boozing to too little exercise, the 12 simple lifestyle tweaks that could prevent 40% of – The Sun

FOUR in ten cases of dementia could be prevented or delayed by adopting a healthier lifestyle, a study reveals.

Experts have identified a dozen modifiable risks from childhood to old age that account for 40 per cent of cases.

4

It includes too much boozing, too little exercise, smoking, obesity and high blood pressure.

Loneliness, pollution, head injury, hearing loss, depression, diabetes and poor education also increase the odds.

The report was compiled by 28 researchers from around the world, who want individuals and governments to take action.

Lead author Prof Gill Livingston, from University College London, said: We can reduce risks by creating active and healthy environments.

Other suggestions include the wider use of hearing aids, stop-smoking support and safer working practices.

4

While experts say changing the way you live could help prevent dementia, here's exactly what you need to do to stop it in its tracks.

Experts state that maintaining a systolic blood pressure of 130 mm Hg or less in midlife from around age 40 years will help cut your risk.

Systolic blood pressure is the number that indicates how much pressure your blood is exerting against your artery walls when the heart beats.

This is important as if the pressure is too high then it could lead to complications.

The study states that people could try hearing aids.

They said the use of hearing aids should be encouraged for hearing loss.

It also reduces hearing loss by protecting ears from high noise levels.

Pollution is everywhere we go so it can be hard to get away from but there are things you can do to monitor it.

The experts said reducing your exposure to air pollution and second hand tobacco can help.

Apps are available that monitor the pollution levels outside.

While none of us want a head injury, experts says you should be careful if you are in a profession where you could be more prone to this.

Most of us like a tipple, whether it's a gin and tonic or a pint, but experts say it's important to keep your drinking in check.

To prevent alcohol misuse they say you should limit yourself to 21 units a week.

Men can have 3-4 units a day and women 2-3.

4

The authors of the report said that this is a good idea at any age but can also reduce your risk of dementia.

It states you should also help support others who want to stop smoking.

While it may seem like a strange point to list, the experts say that an education is key in making sure people don't develop dementia later in life.

Making sure children have both a primary and secondary education is imperative, they say.

We all know the benefits of exercise.

The researchers said that it's important to stay active, especially when you hit the middle of your life.

4

Keeping a healthy life style will lower your chance of diabetes.

If you are overweight then you are more likely to develop diabetes and there are signs you can look out for.

The government has recently launched numerous plans to help Brits kick start their weight loss journey.

The experts say that a healthy weight can help prevent your risk to dementia.

Getting yourself into a regular routine and a sleep pattern is always a good idea.

The researchers said that more work needs to be done when it comes to connecting sleep to dementia but said that this is part of a healthy lifestyle.

While a lot of focus is pushed on keeping fit, experts say that it's important to make sure you are mentally active through your later years.

This could mean doing activities such as reading or even puzzles.

Fiona Carragher, from the Alzheimers Society, said: The news that 40 per cent of dementia cases are, in theory, now preventable is certainly welcome.

While we dont have all the answers yet, we can take action now to tackle the risk factors within our control, including excessive drinking, obesity and high blood pressure.

Meanwhile, we need public health policies to address other factors, such as air pollution and inequalities in childhood education.

Around 850,000 people are living with dementia in the UK, with the figure predicted to rise to 1.6million by 2040.

The findings are published in The Lancet and presented at the Alzheimers Association International Conference.

How CISOs can deal with cybersecurity stress and burnout – TechTarget

Working in emergency medical services, or EMS, and cybersecurity aren't as different as one might think, according to Rich Mogull, CEO at Securosis, a security consulting and research firm located in Phoenix, and CISO at DisruptOps, a cloud security automation management firm based in Kansas City, Mo., especially when it comes to mental health and dealing with stress.

Mogull has been a paramedic for 30 years and in the cybersecurity field for 20. When he began as a paramedic in the early 1990s, the assumption was that anyone entering the field would burn out within seven years, and mental health wellness education was uncommon.

Cybersecurity stress and mental health conversations have become more frequent recently, and Mogull said the security industry can learn a lot from EMS. Mogull is presenting on the topic at Black Hat 2020.

Editor's note: This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

What are some of the concepts to help deal with cybersecurity stress and burnout?

Rich Mogull: One of the big trends is the concept of resiliency versus antifragility. A lot of people say you've got to be resilient, compartmentalize, close it off. [The idea is] resiliency is all about how many hits you can take.

Antifragility is a different concept: Absorb the hit, and learn from it. With resiliency, you don't necessarily have to change. You can just take the pain. With antifragility, you absorb it and pull lessons [from it].

For example, I sleep fine at night, but a big chunk of that is, when I see something that triggers something in me, [I wonder:] Why did that trigger me? What can I learn? Do I need to step out of the situation? Do I need to go clear my head mentally?

I've had to do that in security probably more than I've done it in medicine.

What recommendations would you give for organizations setting up the processes to identify and avoid burnout?

Mogull: There are three measures on the Maslach Burnout Inventory. There is exhaustion -- the more exhaustion, the more it is an indicator of burnout. Next is cynicism -- not skepticism, but a cynical, negative outlook on things. The third is perceived self-efficiency, which is: Am I making a difference?

Those are the things that, as an organization, you can actually look at. You can even use burnoutindex.org, where you can actually take a quiz. If you think you have systemic burnout, you can bring people into your organization to measure it and to help determine the root cause.

What's the best way for CISOs and security professionals to learn how to deal with mental health?

Mogull: There are well-known things you can do to protect yourself, starting with healthy lifestyle choices. That's a huge factor. It's OK to have a drink. It's not OK to be overdrinking every night. Take time off, and take vacations. Try to avoid rotating shifts too much because shifting your sleep schedule can have a big impact on health.

Make sure you context shift -- work is at work, home is at home. Some of the people who get burned out are the really aggressive or obsessive researchers that spend all their time working on security and don't have outside diversions to help them clear their heads.

Find a peer group that is positive and not toxic. This is something we're not great at all the time, and in security, there are really toxic elements of our culture. So, pick and choose which part of the community you invest your time and energy in.

How can organizations avoid toxic cultures?

Mogull: One of the best things organizations can do is to foster 'just culture.'

Just culture is the opposite of blame culture. In security, we are terrible at this. We like to blame people. If there's a security flaw, you screwed up, or you blame the users.

Just culture considers: What's the systemic issue here? Our users are smart, and our employees are smart, so why are they making this decision? Ask why this mistake happened? Sometimes, it is that somebody was reckless, or somebody violated policies. But, even then, you want to question: Why did they violate that policy? Lots of times, it's the system.

An example from security is shadow IT. I hate that term. Most think it means 'our users are doing things they shouldn't be doing, so we have to lock it down.' My definition [of shadow IT] is: things my employees need to get their job done that we're not giving them.

They're doing it because they have a job to do, and they did not feel they could do that in the authorized way, so they went someplace else. In just culture, we try to find out why they went someplace else, and we solve that part of the problem.

How can individuals separate work from home now that so many are working from home?

Mogull: If your office is just a corner in your house, that's OK. Turn the monitor off; turn the computer off; shut the lid; and don't check your email. I've checked my emails off hours, too, but if I'm feeling like I'm starting to get burnt out, which has happened, I checked it less and focus on doing other things. Instead, play video games using a different computer than your work computer, or go for walks or hikes. Clear your head.

This is something the workplace can support. If your manager is hitting you at all hours, that's not right. You could have rules -- no contact outside official office hours for the geographic region or time zone of employees, unless it's a true emergency, for example.

Find a corner of your house, and designate that's where work is, not where the rest of the house is. We're doing this with our kids for school. We bought cheap $50 desks from Amazon, and we stuck them in corners of the house, and that's where the kids do their homework. It's right next to where they play, but they know the difference between the two.

Finally, turn on the Do Not Disturb [function on your phone]. You have to set those barriers.

It is no longer acceptable to rely on individuals to make healthy dietary choices says Salfor University expert. – About Manchester

This week, amid growing evidence of a link between obesity and increased risk from Covid-19, the government has announced new plans to tackle the nations weight problem. The plans include the banning of buy one, get one free (BOGOF) offers on unhealthy foods in an attempt to reduce the quantity that individuals consume.

Dr Anna Robins, programme lead forNutrition and Exercise as Medicineat the University of Salford, comments on the announcement: Projections show that by 2050, 8 out of 10 adults and 5 out of 10 children will be overweight or obese this will cost the NHS around 43.5 billion. Any attempt to reduce the amount of people who are overweight or obese is essential.

Whilst some may view the governments new strategy as somewhat of a nanny approach to tackling the issue, I believe helping people make the right decisions is now essential. Unfortunately, due to the worrying and continual rise in obesity, it is no longer acceptable to rely on individuals to make healthy dietary choices.

The reasons why people fail to lead a healthy lifestyle can be complex, with factors including knowledge, willpower, support, money and time being common barriers. Previous attempts have been made to educate people on how to make healthier choices, such as the introduction of traffic light systems and nutritional information being provided in take-away provision and restaurants. Unfortunately, these measures havent yet been proven to make much difference.

Marks and Spencer have also been accused of false virtue this week after advertising that their Percy Pig sweets are made with natural fruit sugars and contain no artificial colours or flavourings.

Anna explains why these claims may be seen as problematic: It is essential that food companies advertise their products accurately, make people aware of the contents and also take responsibility for their part in influencing health and wellbeing.

These advertising claims aim to convince consumers that Percy Pigs are perhaps suitable for children, but they are still sweets and hence by nature are full of sugar. Just one of these sweets contains 4g of sugar, which is a 5th of the upper limit of sugar a 6-year-old child should be consuming in a whole day.

However, Anna is cautious that the new government strategy only tackles part of the problem. Diet is of course not the only factor that can lead to weight gain. Evidence shows that the population are generally inactive with 1 in 4 women, and 1 in 5 men failing to achieve 30 mins of physical activity per week. It is essential people find the time to do some activity, which has an array of benefits to physical, social and psychological wellbeing, and make a considerable effort to be less sedentary.

The University of Salford is fighting the rise in obesity by becoming the first university in the UK to launch an undergraduate course focussing on nutrition and exercise as medicine. Anna is the programme leader for the course, which is due to welcome its first students in September 2020.

Anna explains why the course is so important. Understanding the importance of a healthy lifestyle and helping people make positive and consistent behaviour change requires specialised knowledge and skills. Practitioners need an in-depth understanding of underpinning scientific principles and to be able to incorporate changes into a persons daily schedule. The art and science of exercise prescription and dietary intervention is tremendously complex and takes years to learn and perfect.

Why beef producers should listen to vegan opinions – Farm Weekly

ON the back of radical protests, private property trespassing and the controversial online mapping of animal production operations in Australia, mainstream media dubbed 2019 'The Year of the Vegan'.

Come a global health pandemic and the significant gains in influence the anti-meat agenda had secured appear to have taken a setback. As mince became scarce in panic buying sprees, plant-based products went out of date on shelves and marketing experts noted actions speak louder than rhetoric.

Still, no one believes veganism is dead in the water and indeed the time may well be ripe for finding common ground.

Researcher Erin Stranks firmly believes there are shared values between vegans and livestock producers and a far better way forward than the antagonism that was in full flight last year.

Honours student at Charles Sturt University's School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences in Wagga Wagga Erin Stranks outlined her research into vegan culture at the Graham Centre Livestock Forum today.

An honours student at Charles Sturt University's School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences in Wagga Wagga, she has designed qualitative research investigating the shared, and opposed, values and the possibility of collaboration to achieve common goals.

Speaking at the 2020 Graham Centre Livestock Forum, held virtually today, Ms Stranks said when she tells people her area of research, she is immediately asked if she is a vegan.

Her answer: "I'm a keen omnivore with a curious nature" and therein lies a key element to the veganism movement that livestock producers should take on board.

Consumer curiosity around how, by whom, and where food is produced is opening doors for vegan culture to challenge views around consumption of meat and the use of animal products.

By understanding vegan culture, and the shifts around meat consumption that are taking place among consumers, livestock producers can facilitate positive and productive conversations for change and innovation, Ms Stranks said.

Her research is still in an early stage but she says she can already see overlaps in values between the two seemingly polarised positions - in animal welfare concern, a want for progress and innovative and a lessening environmental impact, for example.

Why should producers listen to vegan opinions?

Major consumer insight work has shown that one in 10 Australians are reducing their meat intake, led by baby boomers aged 56 to -76, Ms Stranks said.

"Economically, the plant based industry in Australia grossed $150m last year and is expected to increase to $3b by 2030. By comparison, the livestock industry grossed $66b and provided employment to 400,000.

"While the plant-based industry has less of an economic significance, there is clearly an increase in monetary value awarded to these foods by consumers."

It is for this crucial reason the Australian livestock industry must not remain ignorant towards vegan culture - their entire livelihood rests on consumer preference, according to Ms Stranks.

"Livestock producers are relying on social licence, which is the approval from consumers to operate," she said.

"When veganism's social licence increases, livestock producers' decreases.

"My research of literature is showing that involving all stakeholders in conversations around animal welfare can increase the social licence of producers.

"Understanding vegan views might be key to sustainability of the livestock industry."

Data will be collected via an online survey which explores attitudes, ethics and morals surrounding animal welfare.

From new market opportunities for dairy bobby calves to the economics of feeding cull cows and from lessons learned on containment feeding to bovine respiratory disease, the online Graham Centre Livestock Forum was information-intensive and comprehensive. Veganism doesnt need to break the bank, says food blogger – Food For Mzansi

For some, the thought of going vegan or vegetarian leaves them in an utter frenzy. Meat is the staple of most households and while it might even save them a couple of rands, some people are still put off at the idea of ultimately opting for a plant-based and meat-free lifestyle.

The stereotypes around veganism are that it is a bland and expensive lifestyle to maintain, says Cape Town-based food blogger Anda Mtshemla (24). But she has made it her mission to dispel the uninformed myths associated with the widely revered dietary option.

She says the reality is actually the complete opposite to the myths. There is so much variety and many combinations and flavours in vegan foods. That is what inspired me to start my blog.

RECIPE: Vegan umfino with rosemary garlic mushrooms

Mtshemla is the visionary behind 24 Karrots, a blog that assists those curious about veganism with inexpensive meal options and gives much-needed education around this increasingly popular lifestyle.

Drawing much of her meal ideas and inspirations from more prominent blogs, she wants to normalize a cheaper and healthier vegan lifestyle saying, people normally view veganism as other and a weird thing.

Anda Mtshemla, a Cape Town-based blogger, went vegan at age 12. Photo: Supplied

Good food is often the thing that brings South Africans together. Who does not like a nice lamb tjop that comes from the heart of the Karoo? Slaughtering and eating meat together forms a fundamental part of our African culture. So, this will obviously make it more difficult for some to opt for a plant-based diet.

Mtshemla was born in Johannesburg and she spent most of her upbringing in the City of Gold. She now spends most of her time between Cape Town and East London. When she is with her family, they all enjoy a vegan lifestyle, she says. My parents respect my lifestyle and they, too, mostly eat vegan when I am home.

She decided to become vegan at the age of twelve after watching a documentary with gruesome imagery of the violence that animals endured in slaughterhouses. After watching that documentary, I decided I wanted to be a vegetarian. Eight years later, I decided to finally become vegan, and I have not looked back since, the food blogger says.

So far, some of her career highlights as a foodie include working with The Fry Family Food Company, a vegan foods company for which she produced vegan recipes. She also promoted the work and campaigns run by Veganuary, a British non-profit organisation that promotes veganism for the month of January.

People normally view veganism as other and a weird thing.

While some people might want to try out a vegan lifestyle, the cost associated with adopting this lifestyle is often off-putting.

Veganism can definitely be expensive, Mtshemla explains. When she goes restaurants, the vegan option of an otherwise animal product does bite at the wallet sometimes. But if you take it to basics and take it back to whole foods such as lentils, beans and rice, these are the cheaper foods. Vegetables and fruits are cheaper options, she says, for those starting a vegan diet.

Much of the food that we consume nowadays is highly processed and full of preservatives. Mtshemla believes that if you opt for an inexpensive vegetarian or vegan lifestyle, you will feel much better.

Do everything from your perspective and bring your unique point of view.

You stay fuller for longer, because you are not eating something that is packed with sugar and corn syrup.

Mtshemla believes that a vegan diet is healthier than an omnivorous diet, given that it is lower in salt and cholesterol and high in fiber. A study also found that people who eat vegan and vegetarian have a lower risk of heart disease, but a higher risk of a stroke, most likely due to lack of vitamin B12.

While people might think it is a good idea to entirely chuck out their meat at once to go completely vegan, Mtshemla advises against this.

The 24 Karrots blogger believes the vegan lifestyle is magic for the body. Photo: Supplied

It should be a gradual process, otherwise it wont work. Remember, you are introducing new foods and you do not know how your body is going to react. It might be difficult to adjust to everything all at once. She also recommends that you keep your cooking routine, but just substitute all of the ingredients with a vegan alternative.

She encourages people to finish what is in their fridge and replace it with a vegan alternative. Finish your dairy milk in the refrigerator and replace it with soy or almond milk. If your mayonnaise is finished, replace it with a vegan option.

If you have your hopes up for becoming a vegan food blogger or home chef, Mtshemla emphasizes that you need to remain authentic to yourself and what your brand is about. Do everything from your perspective and bring your unique point of view thats really what is going to make you stand out, she says.

Mtshemla says that although she is not sure where she sees 24 Karrots going (I am an Aries and not great at planning,), she does have high hopes that her brand becomes a household South African name and a go-to for those wanting try out a vegan lifestyle.

Trees Live for Thousands of Years, but Can They Cheat Death? Not Quite – Smithsonian Magazine

A lifetime ago in January 2020, researchers studying long-lived ginkgo trees found that 600-year-old trees were biologically much the same as 20-year-old whipper snappers. Ginkgoes apparent ability to sidestep the usual age-related decline prompted some to wonder whether they might be capable of living forever. Now, a new paper titled, Long-Lived Trees Are Not Immortal, aims to set the record straight, reports Cara Giaimo for the New York Times.

The century-spanning ginkgoes featured in the January study arent even the oldest known trees. In a stark, rocky landscape east of Californias Sierra Nevada Mountains lives Methuselah, a nearly 4,800-year-old bristlecone pine discovered in 1957 that holds the world title for oldest known living organism.

The paper on gingkoes, published in the journal the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that in terms of reproduction and photosynthesis the 600-year-old trees were hale and hearty. The super-old trees growth had slowed to a crawl, to be sure, but the cells showed no signs of senescence, which is not quite death but causes cells to stop dividing and eventually results in a loss of function.

But University of Barcelona plant biologist Sergi Munn-Bosch, author of the new commentary about the topic, argues the researchers simply may not have waited long enough to observe the trees eventual slide towards death, reports Brooks Hays for United Press International. At 600 years, the ginkgoes in the January study are only about halfway to their maximum lifespan, per Munn-Boschs article.

It is highly probable that physiological senescence occurs in all organisms, but that the limited human lifespan prevents us from properly gauging it in long-lived trees in nature, in real time, explains Munn-Bosch in the journal Trends in Plant Science.

The authors of the January paper didnt have multiple trees older than 1,000 years featured in the study, so they couldnt extrapolate their results to the known age limits of Ginkgo trees, explains Paleobotanist Richard Barclay, who leads the Fossil Atmospheres Project at Smithsonians National Museum of Natural History. It would be great to have been able to study individual Ginkgo plants that were over 1,000 years in age, but replicates at those ages are difficult to find, he says.

I think that [the authors of the original paper] might agree with Sergi in that they never suggested that Ginkgo trees were immortal, only that, by 667 years, individual Ginkgo trees still have no detectable levels of senescence, Barclay says. This is what good scientists do. They stay within the confines of what their data tells them.

Furthermore, while the cells inside ginkgo responsible for creating new growth were still happily dividing even in ancient trees, the layer in which those cells reside, called the cambium, gets thinner and thinner over time, Munn-Bosch tells the Times. The cambium is also responsible for producing tissues that aid in the transport of water from the trees roots to its shoots, Munn-Bosch writes in his paper. While this thinning wouldnt exactly be programmed senescence, the cambium could eventually become too thin to function and kill the tree.

Molecular biologist Richard Dixon of the University of North Texas, Denton, who co-authored the January paper documenting the mechanism behind the ginkgoes miraculous longevity, tells the Times, its probable that even ginkgo trees may die from natural causes.

Barclay hopes to see the methods of the original paper applied to trees that are past the millennial mark and to other species of long-living trees. He wonders, how universal is this approach to long life, and whether species such as Bristlecone Pine follow a similar approach, or a completely different one.

Striking a tone more akin to a philosopher than a plant researcher, Munn-Bosch suggests simply existing for such a long time represents a cumulative hardship.

"Time, in some respects, can be considered as a sort of stress," he says in a statement. Living is stressful, and this very slowly will bring you to death."

And while this idea is certainly true for individuals, Barclay notes that the genus Ginkgo appeared more than 250 million years ago, and shows up in the fossil record in a very recognizable form. Inferences about the way individual plants manage to deal with the stress of time may scale up to geological time, and paleontologists can lean on studies like these for guidelines to use when learning about how Ginkgo lasted through millenia without much visible change.

We often ponder why different species of plants have longer temporal spans, and plants like Ginkgo have survived through much tumult in the geological past, he says. Perhaps it was the strategies that allow Ginkgo to live for a long time as individuals that also allowed them to squeeze through the bottle necks that extinguished other species.

LA Zoo Mourns the Loss of Beloved African Lion Pair – NBC Southern California

The Los Angeles Zoo announced Thursday the deaths of African lion pair Hubert and Kalisa.

The Zoo said in a press release that they made the difficult decision to euthanize the 21-year-old partners "due to their declining health and age-related illnesses that diminished their quality of life."

"Hubert and Kalisa lived far past the expected lifespan of African lions, and they inevitably began to suffer from age-related issues. Of course, we did not want them to suffer physically and wanted to do what was best for them," Beth Schaefer, the Zoo's Director of Animal Programs, said.

Local news from across Southern California

"With very heavy hearts that also contain gratitude for having known them, animal care and veterinary health staff came to the consensus that humane euthanasia was in the best interest of their welfare as their quality of life had diminished."

Kalisa was born in 1998 and Hubert in 1999. They met at the Woodland Park Zoo and were moved to the LA Zoo 6 years ago. Hubert fathered 10 cubs throughout his life, and though he and Kalisa never had cubs together, the LA Zoo said in a news release the two were life partners and loyal companions.

"Kalisa and Hubert were often seen sleeping together and grooming one another," Schaefer explained, noting that visitors often commented on the obvious bond between the two lions.

"You cannot think of Hubert without thinking of his companion, Kalisa; theyve been an inseparable couple for years," Alisa Behar, the Zoo's Curator of Mammals added.

The average life expectancy for African lions that live in the wild is in the mid-teens, while it is about 17 years for those in Zoos. CEO & Zoo Director of the LA Zoo, Denise Verret noted that the longevity of Huberts and Kalisas lives is a testament to the expert care of the Zoos veterinary and animal care teams.

"Hubert and Kalisa are an iconic part of the LA Zoo experience, and our staff and guests have been touched by their loyal companionship," Verret said.

The African lion, which is native to the savannas, arid woodlands, and semi-desert regions from south of the Sahara Desert to South Africa, is categorized by the IUCN Red List as vulnerable due to human-wildlife conflict, prey depletion, the illegal trade of lion body parts for traditional medicine, trophy hunting, and disease.
