Christmas season animal cruelty that gave rise to vegetarianism – Business Daily

By DOUGLAS KIEREINI

Christmas is a special time of the year for many people around the world. Families get together to share food, gifts and happy times. It is supposed to be the festival of peace and happiness yet it has never been a good season for animals.

Goats are the favourite delicacy of choice in Kenya and they are slaughtered in their thousands during this festive season, in homes, abattoirs, hotels and other places of entertainment. Chicken come a close second and often go side by side with goat. In many western countries, turkey is the favourite meal for Christmas.

But if you think that this is cruel, the situation was rather worse in England two or three centuries ago. According to Ian Jack, writing in The Guardian, Christmas dinner was preceded by an artisanal cruelty in all its terrible variety. For instance, poultry: the less they ran and flattered about the fatter they got, so geese would be nailed by their webbed feet to the floor, while chickens and game birds were confined to windowless cells, sometimes after their keeper had taken the extra precaution of blinding them or cutting off their legs while still alive.

Mammals were, literally, a tougher proposition. Popular belief said that meat was best tenderised while it was still alive, so calves and pigs were whipped to death with knotted ropes, and bulls killed only after dogs had baited them. Succulent Dorset lambs, according to historian Keith Thomas, arrived at the tables of Georgian gentry only after a lengthy imprisonment in dark little cabins.

A desire for paler meat led to longer deaths. A calfs executioner, having cut the animal at the neck, would let it bleed for a while and then staunch the wound for a day to let death come slowly. As for turkeys, the custom was to snip a vein inside their mouths and hang them upside down, so that their blood dripped out little by little. The upside-down position remains a constant of turkey slaughter today, though the process is industrial, possibly less painful and necessarily quicker.

Bread and cheese kept the poor alive in 18th century England, but the middle and upper classes stuffed themselves with roasts, steaks and chops; a morning, noon and night gluttony that turned England into the most carnivorous country in Europe and left many of its wealthier population corpulent and suffering from gout.

In his excellent history of vegetarianism, The Heretics Feast, Colin Spencer suggests that the consequent revulsion against the obese and the drunk, slobbering under their cockeyed wigs, made the idea of a strict vegetable and water diet almost fashionable.

The almost is important because people like Benjamin Franklin who took up the vegetarian diet usually put it down again, seeing it as a cure, the equivalent of two weeks rehab in the Priory, rather than a lifetime commitment. Percy Bysshe Shelley was probably the causes most celebrated advocate until George Bernard Shaw and Mahatma Gandhi came along adding economic efficiency to a list that already included human well-being and the humane treatment of animals.

Other than sounding like an animal-rights activist, I hope I have made you feel better about your murderous pursuits this festive season. It could get a lot worse, if that gives you cold comfort!

Spare a thought for those that are less fortunate this Christmas and of course those poor animals and fowls!

Like tobacco companies : Coca Cola blasted for telling teens its soda is ‘healthy lifestyle’ choice in new study – RT

Internal emails from Coca Cola have shown the carbonated-beverage giant is trying to change the unhealthy image of their brand by specifically targeting active teenagers.

A new report from The International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (IJERPH) is blasting the Atlanta-based corporation for advertising its sugary drinks to teenagers and trying to convince them that soda is part of a healthy lifestyle.

"The large number of children targeted and reached by Coke as part of their PR campaigns is a serious concern from a public-health perspective," the organization said.

IJERPHs study looked at two specific advertising campaigns, one for the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics and the other for Movement Is Happiness. The study examined internal Coca-Cola emails relevant to the campaigns and found the company was trying to "increase Coke brand health scores with teens."

To target teens, the study alleges that Coca-Cola teamed with social media influencers, including members of Olympic teams, and advertised their product in healthy and active situations. They also used their Movement Is Happiness campaign to specifically combat opposition to their product and to build support broadly in a host of categories, including women and the media.

The documents show that Coca-Cola tried to use public relations to manipulate teens into thinking that sugary soda is healthy, when really it increases the risk of obesity, diabetes and other ills, said Gary Ruskin, a co-author of the study, and co-director of US Right to Know, a food transparency group that helped produce the research. Tobacco companies shouldnt tell teens what is or is not healthy, and neither should Coca-Cola.

Ruskin went on to call for an investigation by the government into Coca Colas public relations strategies.

Responding to the study and criticism, Coca-Cola said it is currently decreasing sugar in its products and never specifically said that Coke is healthy for anyone.

"At Coca-Cola, we recognize that too much sugar isn't good for anyone. That's why, around the world, we are reducing the amount of sugar in our products and taking other steps to help people reduce their sugar intake," a spokesperson said. "We have long had a global policy of not marketing to children under 12, and all of our marketing campaigns are designed to comply with that policy."

HealthWell Foundation Now Offers a Financial Lifeline to Medicare Patients Living with Chronic Heart Failure – Yahoo Finance

Copayment and Premium Assistance Now Available

GERMANTOWN, Md., Dec. 20, 2019 /PRNewswire/ --The HealthWell Foundation, an independent non-profit that provides a financial lifeline for inadequately insured Americans, has opened a new fund to provide copayment and premium assistance to Medicare patients living with chronic heart failure. HealthWell will provide up to $2,500 in financial assistance for a 12-month grant to eligible patients who have annual household incomes up to 500 percent of the federal poverty level.

Chronic heart failure is a progressive condition that causes the muscle in the heart wall to slowly weaken and lose its ability to pump blood. The heart is unable to pump enough blood through the heart to meet the body's needs for blood and oxygen. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), chronic heart failure is a serious condition, and usually there is no cure. Many people with chronic heart failure lead full and enjoyable lives when managing their condition through medications and healthy lifestyle changes.

"WomenHeart recognizes that for too many women living with heart failure, the costs of ongoing treatment and care can seem insurmountable," said Celina Gorre, CEO of WomenHeart. "Women living with heart failure can thrive with proper care and treatment, however they are more likely than men to have higher total out-of-pocket costs, which may impact readmissions and overall quality of care. WomenHeart commends the HealthWell Foundation for starting a fund for heart failure patients to help off-set the financial burden of their treatment costs."

"Patients living with chronic heart failure face day-to-day challenges in managing their condition. These challenges can be even more pronounced when patients are on Medicare and struggle to cover the cost of their medications," said Krista Zodet, HealthWell Foundation President. "Our donors understand the hardships many people living with chronic heart failure endure. As a result of their generosity, we are now able to ease some of the financial barriers these patients face in accessing critical, possibly lifesaving, medications."

Stuffing the Stocking – Cowboys and Indians

This Christmas, my grown sons getting something healthy and delicious from Kates Real Foods.

Before Santa could even get them off the counter and into the secret hiding place, my son discovered and ate one of the Bartons peppermint-bark candy bars Id just discovered at the dollar store for a lot less than you see them for on Amazon.

My son hasnt believed in Santa for about 20 years. But that doesnt stop me from putting out the milk and cookies with a note near the fireplace and hanging the stockings by the chimney with care in hopes that St. Nick

This Christmas, 2019, my son happens to be living at home. It could be one of my last chances to be the Santa in his life. Soon enough, there will be a wife and his own kids at the center of his merry gift-wrapped universe.

But while I have him, Ill be getting up in the middle of the night and putting the wrapped presents under/near our tiny tree and hanging his big childhood stocking on the silver reindeer mantel hook.

Now that I think about it, Ill probably just stick to a stocking. For years hes been of an age and mindset that theres really nothing I can choose for him that hed like except maybe the latest iPhone (his is new enough, thank you!) or some other high-dollar item like a new laptop (which this strapped Santa is definitely not able to afford right now).

What it boils down to then is a bunch of well-chosen gift cards (selected for maximum mitigation of borrowing money from Mom) and a check. On the list: Einstein Bros. Bagels, Chipotle, Walmart, and High Stone Reflexology.

You cant just throw a bunch of gift cards and a check in a stocking and call Christmas done, which is why Ive been casting around for fun small stuff that will make it seem like Santa put some real thought into this happy charade.

The peppermint-bark bars (minus one), a pair of Bombas socks (a friend gave me my first for Christmas and theres no going back), and what else?

Every Christmas when I was growing up, Santa inexplicably would put a tangerine in our stockings. Less mystifying but equally traditional, thered also always be some foil-wrapped Mexican wedding cake cookies (which I baked all my teenage years for Santa to pilfer). Since thats what passes for Christmas-stocking tradition in my family, my son will get tangerines and Mexican wedding cakes, and, I hope, like me, hell always associate the singular smell and taste of a peeled tangerine and a festive dusting of powdered sugar with Christmas morning.

Of course there will also be Hersheys Kisses in red, green, and silver foil. And then for something new, Ive found Kates Real Food energy bars. A personal trainer and power-lifter, my grown kid will appreciate these hand-rolled bars made from organic ingredients that sustain energy.

Kates Real Food gets high marks from everyone from Forbes to Outside to GearJunkie. But what really sold me besides the ringing endorsements was the Western back story:

In the 90s, Kate was living the ski-bum life in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Between days on the slopes and nights waiting tables, Kate was always on the move and she needed a tasty organic energy bar that could keep up with her. When she couldnt find one, she decided to make it herself. Over ten years later, Kates continues to support people as they pursue a healthy lifestyle.

USDA Organic. Non-GMO. Gluten-free. All-natural honey. Sustainable. Voted Best Tasting Bar at REI on the Adventure Sports Network.

Heres what my lucky son is getting in his stocking: the Lemon Coconut Ginger Bivy Bar, Mango Coconut Tiki Bar, Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate Grizzly Bar, Peanut Butter Hemp and Flax Stash Bar, Dark Chocolate Cherry and Almond Handle Bar, and the Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate Tram Bar.

Lemon Coconut Ginger Bivy Bar

Mango Coconut Tiki Bar

Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate Grizzly Bar

Peanut Butter Hemp & Flax Stash Bar

Dark Chocolate Cherry and Almond Handle Bar

Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate Tram Bar

1/6

Best thing about them besides how delicious and healthy they are is the super-cool outdoors- and adventure-inspired packaging that means Santa doesnt have to wrap them. And if the peppermint bark was fair game for stealing before Christmas morning, Santa might just have to nick one of these and skip the milk and cookies.

Get some at katesrealfood.com, Amazon, REI, and specialty grocery stores and coffee shops.

4 Ways to Make Good Health Decisions – The Good Men Project

Salt is bad for you. No, salt is fine. Floss after every meal. No, flossing is actually bad for your oral health. And so on. People are constantly bombarded with health news that is conflicting and confusing, leaving them unsure whether well-established health advice is actually trustworthy.

Consider the case of red meat. Heavy consumption has long been linked to heart disease and other illnesses. That is until just recently, when the Annals of Internal Medicine published researchconcluding that there is no compelling evidencethat people stand to benefit from eating less red meat. Theres alsothe curious case of the egg, which has been both celebrated as a staple of the American diet and maligned as a contributing factor in cardiovascular disease several times over.

Although these are only a few examples, the way they shape our lives is striking. The problem is that the rigor for most health studies is not the same as those for clinical trials for pharmaceuticals, yet they still find their way into mainstream health conversations. One of the key limitations to the way health news is presented is that its difficult to translate insights and observations into meaningful action across entire populations when the depth and length of research generally dont stand up to statistical scrutiny.

Understanding the Conflict

Theres a reason Mens Health magazine has tens of millions of monthly website visits and the Journal of Mens Health does not. The former packages health answers in quick, easy-to-digest articles, while the latter is a peer-reviewed academic journal focused on more in-depth research the kind of presentation that doesnt lend itself to capturing todays readers. The value people place on types of content plays a huge role in what does and doesnt gain traction on the internet and, therefore, what types of content health news publications continue to create.

Internet content is crafted with different goals. Theres no doubt that some of it is designed to inform, but the vast majority is made to drive engagement, solicit clicks for ads and sell subscriptions. When editorial teams find topics that achieve those goals, they create more and more content built from that template.

Unfortunately, it can misinform and cause some readers to make poor short-term decisions for themselves. Just think about the craze over cleanses. Fasting for 24, 48 or 72 hours has some benefits, but the fervor surrounding specific ingredient cleanses like the cayenne cleanse can yield unreasonable expectations and set people up for disappointment. Fad diets and yo-yo cleanses dont add up to become a healthy lifestyle. Instead, they lead readers to lose faith in the credible research and science that is so crucial to health news and information.

With so much misleading and incomplete information circulating around the internet, it can be difficult to know what to trust. To contextualize health news and make good decisions, there are a few tips we can follow:

The people who conducted the study, the writer, the editor who are they? It might not always be possible to understand the motivations of the publishers, but looking into their backgrounds and specialties can shed light on their qualifications. Think about the latest red meat study, which we now know was led by a man whoneglected to disclose his tiesto the meat and food industry.

Remember that most online articles exist to drive traffic, not inform readers. When you come across a story that doesnt link to a specific study, copy the claim or statistic and do a quick search onPubMed, an online database of research studies with non-biased funding, to see whether you can verify the claim being made.So much web content is built in the form of digestible bits there can be a lot of factual errorsor incorrect assumptionsthat slip through the cracks. Just as concerning, key pieces of information can be obscured or misrepresented in order to further an agenda. That being said, there is good content out there. To separate those articles from the bad ones,do a little digging.

If something feels oversimplified and the story has no contextual data, it probably isnt worth your time.

Just start with the headline, which might not always reflect the conclusion of the story its discussing. Considera recent headlinewarning that hospital lights could increase death risks in patients dealing with heart disease. What that headline didnt say was that the study was limited and only conducted on mice.

As another example, most diet studies rely on a limited survey of what people ate over the past six months. Usually these are weaker than studies based on food journals because people forget. I cant remember what I ate for lunch four days ago, let alone over the past six months.

Understanding the operational chain at news outlets (or websites masquerading as news outlets) can sound an alarm when something feels off. Many writers do not create the headlines for the stories they author. Often, that responsibility falls on an editor or a social media manager. In that handoff, that person might write something punchier than the substance of the story, misrepresenting the issue in the process.

In an ideal world, online content could be trusted to be an accurate reflection of the latest and most important updates in the world of health. Unfortunately, thats not always the case. Some publications are known to create new articles based on older studies, passing them off as if they touch on the latest information. But sometimes the information presented has since been debunked.

Its important to check to see whether the information is new and verified. If it has been disproven since the original studys publish date, be sure to closely analyze everything coming from that publication and/or partner publications going forward. Credible sources will link to the original study, so you should usually be able to find the full brief within two or three clicks. If the piece does not include a link, that should be a red flag to continue reading with a bit of caution.

By default, checking the following details can help you separate clickbait from credible research.

With so much misinformation circulating on the internet, its important to understand how we can differentiate the good articles from the bad ones. Examining motivations, breaking apart the claims and methods used, checking the timeliness of the information and discussing the findings with trusted friends and colleagues can equip us to contextualize the information and judge the usefulness for ourselves. When we take such steps, we help ensure the health news we digest is truly right for us.

Ashley Graham is working to teach women how to embrace pregnancy stretch marks and all – Yahoo Lifestyle

Ashley Grahamannounced herpregnancyon Instagram in mid-August with a gorgeous, posed photo of herself showcasing her baby bump in a body-con dress hugging her every curve. She was met with messages of congratulations and comments referencing her sexy belly. And just three days later, she took social media by storm when she posted another photo displaying her new journey to motherhood, which was a close-up of that same belly, unedited with stretch marksand all.

The 32-year-old model went on to post photos from the earlier months of her pregnancy, where she was lounging in a teeny bikini, rocking alatex dressor even showing off thehigh-waisted underwearthat she was wearing to the gym to make up for the fact that her leggings no longer fit. With each post, she took control of the narrative surrounding her own changing body and empowered women to embrace its evolution in both the sexy and vulnerable moments.

Getting bigger and bigger and trying to embrace my new body every day, she captioned a video on Oct. 7. Its a journey and Im so thankful to have such a supportive community.

Despite the body-positive model making her own vulnerability look easy, shes admitted that being so authentic about the changes while simultaneously trying to accept them was difficult. This is a new body that Im walking into, she explained during anepisode of her web series, Fearless. I felt so isolated, I felt so alone.

Although social media became an outlet for her to connect with other women feeling the same way, its no wonder that she felt reluctant to share so much as these conversations surrounding pregnancy havent always existed. Instead, women in the spotlight, as well as in everyday life, have often hid their changing bodies as a result of a shame-based culture.

If we look at it from a historical perspective, even in the last 30-40 years, women hid their bodies. They wore tents when they were pregnant. You hid pregnancy. You hid the body changing,Dr. Carla Marie Manly, PhDtells Yahoo Lifestyle. It was something that was very private. It was, in innocence, something that a woman was ashamed of, and so its really a shame-based culture.

One of the earliest examples of prominent women breaking this perception wasDemi Moorewith her1991 Vanity Fair coverwhere she posed nude while seven months pregnant with her second daughter, Scout Willis. However, as Manly points out, the photo represented an idealized version of pregnancy.

They are the posed pictures and the celebrity has the right to have the retouching done and all of this, Manly explains, adding that any other celebrated depiction of a pregnant woman was far and few between.

Most other discussions around pregnancy didnt happen until the postpartum period, when a woman was being prompted to talk about bouncing back a concept highlighted by features likeKourtney Kardashians interview in Shape magazinewhen her first-born, Mason, was just 18 months old.

I'm really excited to be on the cover of Shape and offer some advice, particularly to new mothers. I'm proof that even after having a baby, you can look better and sexier than ever! Kardashian is quoted in the beginning of the piece, which featured bikini photos and tips on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, kicking cravings and being a hot mama.

Other expecting moms have been shamed for their appearance while pregnant, including Elsa Pataky whosebaby bump was compared to a beer bellyduring an episode of Fashion Police after the 2014 Oscars. The movement against that type of shaming, Manly says, is a result of recent messaging around body positivity, which counts on women to set an empowering precedent of owning their bodies and talking more openly about them.

What I think were seeing is a movement toward destigmatizing so many aspects of what it is to be a woman, and what it is to be human, Manly explains. And so as we strive to destigmatize that, we then reduce the shame that surrounds it. So we no longer feel the need to hide because its something normal.

Some of this years pregnant celebrities Amy Schumer,Shay Mitchell,Shawn Johnson,Jessica Simpsonand Graham did their part to normalize all parts of pregnancy, including both the sexy and unsexy, with unfiltered content of themselves growing out of clothes, getting stretch marks and swelling ankles, lounging in lingerie and even working out.

By calling attention to it on your own, you are in control of that. You are no longer embarrassed about it because youre in control of the narrative and you say, this is a part of being normal. Yeah, its inconvenient or yeah, I wish I didnt have the swollen ankles, yeah I wish I didnt have the spot on my dress or whatever it is, Manly says. But it is here, its normal, its natural, and sometimes, isnt it funny how we are all so human and human together? And thats the beautiful part.

Good sleep linked to lower risk of heart attack and stroke – NHS Website

"Restful night 'cuts risk' of heart attack," reports The Times.

Doctors have long suspected a link between unhealthy sleep behaviours and cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease and stroke. Researchers created a 'healthy sleep score', which combined 5 factors:

They applied the score to more than 385,000 people from the UK without cardiovascular disease, who were followed up for an average of 8.5 years. Researchers were interested to see how their sleep score affected their chance of developing heart disease or stroke.

People who had all the healthy sleep factors (a score of 5) were compared to people with the lowest score (0 to 1). Those with the highest score were 35% less likely to develop heart disease or have a stroke than those with the lowest score.

Find out more about how to get a good night's sleep

The researchers who carried out the study were from Tulane University in the US and Peking University Health Centre in China, although they used information gathered in the UK.

The study was funded by the US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. It was published in the peer-reviewed European Heart Journal on an open access basis so it's free to read online.

The reports in the UK media were mostly balanced and accurate, although they did not all make the point that the study did not prove cause and effect. It was also not made clear that the widely reported 34% difference in cardiovascular risk was based on a comparison between the best and worst sleep scores, rather than the best compared to the average scores.

This was a cohort study. Cohort studies are useful ways to examine links between risk factors such as poor sleep and outcomes such as heart attacks and strokes. But they cannot tell us whether risk factors directly cause outcomes. Other factors may be involved.

Researchers used information from the UK Biobank cohort study, which is an ongoing study of over 500,000 UK adults aged 37 to 73, recruited from 2006 to 2010. At recruitment, people were asked about a wide range of health conditions and lifestyle behaviours, and gave genetic samples.

The researchers used data from people who did not have cardiovascular disease at the start of the study and who answered all the questions about their sleep habits. They followed them up until February 2016 to see if they had been admitted to hospital with heart disease or stroke.

People were asked about their sleep and the researchers used their answers to give them a score based on the 5 sleep behaviours. They looked at how likely they were to have had heart disease or stroke, depending on their sleep score.

The researchers adjusted their figures to take into account a number of potential confounders that could affect both cardiovascular risk and sleep quality. These were:

They also investigated whether genetic risk of cardiovascular disease affected their results. They used people's genetic samples to put them into high, medium or low genetic risk categories, then looked to see whether sleep patterns still affected people's chance of getting cardiovascular disease when combined with genetic risk.

Of the 385,292 people in the study, 21.8% had the healthiest sleep score of 5, and 2.3% had the worst sleep score of 0 or 1. During the 8.5 year follow-up, 7,280 people developed heart disease or stroke.

Compared to those with the worst sleep score, those with the healthiest sleep score were 35% less likely to have had heart disease or stroke (hazard ratio (HR) 0.65, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.52 to 0.81). The researchers calculated that each additional healthy sleep score point lowered the risk of heart disease or stroke by 8% (HR 0.92, 95% CI 0.89 to 0.94).

We do not know whether healthy sleep directly causes the lower risk of cardiovascular disease. But the researchers calculated that, if it did, 11.5% of the total number of cases of heart disease and stroke in the study would have been avoided.

When looking at genetic risk, the researchers found that better sleep patterns were still linked to lower risk of cardiovascular disease. People who had low genetic risk saw their risk rise if they had poor sleep patterns, while people at high genetic risk saw their risk fall if they had good sleep patterns.

The researchers said: "We found that a healthy sleep pattern was related to a reduced risk of CVD events. Our findings underline the importance of considering sleep behaviours in cardiovascular practice."

They added: "We found that a high genetic risk could be partly offset by a healthy sleep pattern, but in addition, individuals with low genetic risk could lose their inherent protection if they had a poor sleep pattern."

The study confirms that good sleep is part of a healthy lifestyle including plenty of physical activity and a balanced diet which can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. The study has some limitations:

The study also only measured sleep patterns once, at the start of the study, so we do not know how changing sleep patterns might affect cardiovascular risk.

Having said that, it seems likely that good sleep, as part of an overall healthy lifestyle, can contribute to a lowered chance of getting conditions such as cardiovascular disease.

Ireland officially one of the best places in the world to grow old – Irish Post

IRELAND has been officially recognised as one of the best places in the world to grow old, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The recognition has been put down to Ireland's growing over-65s population, as well as the overall healthy lifestyle of the Irish people.

Irelands overall population has been getting increasingly older and older since the 1980s, with the over-65 age demographic group increasing by a high of 19% between the years of 2011 and 2016.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) even predicts in just 30 years, the number of people in the country aged 65 and over will have increased from 629,800 - the figure recorded in 2016 - to around 1.6 million.

Added to this, it's expected that over 250,000 people in Ireland will be aged over 80 by the year 2031.

Due to these expected increases, the Age-Friendly Ireland Programme was set up and has been in operation for over a decade.

Its aim is to have every local authority area in Ireland focus on creating an elderly-friendly environment as best they can, making it easier to grow old in.

Some of the work being done to ensure this includes the building of housing developments, libraries, airport guidelines, bus-route guidelines and car-parking facilities.

The Age-Friendly Ireland Programme also looks to keep people as active as possible, not just physically, but in their local community as well.

What this will ensure is that older people stay healthy and active for longer, and will provide support to those who are no longer in afeasible position to look after themselves.

Add to this Ireland's wide array of sleepy countryside towns and villages making for idyllic retirement spots, it's no wonder we're considered one of the best places in the world to grow old.

NANOBIOTIX Receives the 2019 Prix Galien Award for First-in-Class HENSIFY – Business Wire

PARIS & CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Regulatory News:

NANOBIOTIX (Paris:NANO) (Euronext: NANO - ISIN: FR0011341205 the Company), a clinical-stage nanomedicine company pioneering new approaches to the treatment of cancer, today announced receipt of the French 2019 Prix Galien Award for Most Innovative MedTech. The Companys lead product, HENSIFY (NBTXR3) brand name for the treatment of locally advanced Soft Tissue Sarcoma (STS), was recognized after receiving European market approval (CE marking, DM class III, on April 2, 2019) earlier this year. The Prix Galien Award recognizes outstanding biomedical and medical technology product achievements that improve the human condition.

HENSIFY is a first-in-class radioenhancer consisting of an aqueous suspension of crystalline hafnium oxide nanoparticles. The product is administered only once, directly into the tumor, before a patients first radiotherapy session. After intratumoral injection, the nanoparticles penetrate the tumor cells and, when activated by ionizing radiation, deliver a larger energy deposit within the tumor where the nanoparticles are present, thereby increasing the tumor-killing effect of treatment without increasing damage to surrounding healthy tissues. HENSIFY has a universal, physical mode of action and is inert within the human body outside of the presence of ionizing radiation.

The product is approved in Europe for the treatment of Soft Tissue Sarcoma (STS). Positive results from the Companys phase III STS study were featured the August 2019 edition of The Lancet Oncology.

Moving forward, the Company is engaged in global clinical development of the product across fifteen (15) clinical trials in STS and other indications with a primary focus on global registration for the treatment of Head and Neck cancers. These trials include the expansion phase of a European phase I evaluating the safety and feasibility of NBTXR3 activated by radiation therapy(Study NBTXR3-102); an immuno-oncology (I/O) basket trial (Study NBTXR3-1100) which evaluates NBTXR3 in combination with anti-PD-1 in the United States (US); phase I trials evaluating NBTXR3 activated by radiation therapy for the treatment of liver and prostate cancer; a partnership with PharmaEngine in Asia evaluating NBTXR3 in combination with cisplatin; and a clinical collaboration with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MD Anderson) including nine (9) trials across several indications.

About the PRIX GALIEN

Created in France in 1970, the Prix Galien is the most prestigious award in the field of pharmaceutical research and innovation. Referred to as the Nobel Prize of pharmaceutical research, it recognizes the efforts and achievements of pharmaceutical research and development.

About NBTXR3

NBTXR3 is a first-in-class product designed to destroy tumors through physical cell death when activated by radiotherapy. NBTXR3 has a high degree of biocompatibility, requires one single administration before the first radiotherapy treatment session, and has the ability to fit into current worldwide standards of radiation care. The physical mode of action of NBTXR3 makes it applicable across solid tumors such as lung, prostate, liver, glioblastoma, and breast cancers.

NBTXR3 is actively being evaluated in head and neck cancer with locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity or oropharynx in elderly and frail patients unable to receive chemotherapy or cetuximab with limited therapeutic options. Promising results have been observed in the phase I/II trial regarding local control. In the United States, the company has started the regulatory process in regard to the clinical authorization to the phase II/III in locally advanced head and neck cancers.

Nanobiotix is also running an Immuno-Oncology development program. The Company received approval FDA to launch a clinical trial of NBTXR3 activated by radiotherapy in combination with anti-PD-1 antibodies in locoregional recurrent (LRR) or recurrent and metastatic (R/M) head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and lung or liver metastasis (mets) with HNSCC not amenable to re-irradiation or non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) as the primary tumor.

The other ongoing NBTXR3 trials are treating patients with liver cancers (hepatocellular carcinoma and liver metastasis), locally advanced or unresectable rectal cancer in combination with chemotherapy, head and neck cancer in combination with concurrent chemotherapy, and prostate adenocarcinoma. Furthermore, the company has a large-scale, comprehensive clinical research collaboration with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (9 new phase I/II clinical trials in the United States) to evaluate NBTXR3 across head and neck, pancreatic, thoracic, lung, gastrointestinal and genitourinary cancers.

News – Politicized Veganism – The Heartland Institute

The average American ate some 220 pounds of red meat and poultry in 2018, according to the US Department of Agriculture, surpassing a record set in 2004. But some politicians have joined anti-meat and climate change activists in a massive effort to restructure the American diet and to ensure ... and mandate ... that the rest of the world will be stuck with a mostly plant-based diet.

Last March, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio shocked Americas meat producers by announcing the expansion of meatless Mondays to all New York City public schools. The reason? To keep our lunch and planet green for generations to come. So now they claim eating meat also threatens the planet.

Monday Campaigns is a national organization that collaborates with the Center for a Livable Future (CLF) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Its goal is to reduce US meat consumption by 15% for our personal health and the health of the planet.

Finnish researchers in 2012 investigated the intended and unintended effects of mandatory vegetarian days in Helsinki schools. While the compulsory restrictions increased healthy and sustainable dietary patterns, they also resulted in psychological reactance, hedonic dislike, and noncompliance. Refuseniks at a Finnish military base leave behind dumpsters of empty pizza boxes on forced-vegan day.

Liberal-progressive local governments are already looking at replicating de Blasios bold move. For example, a resolution calling for Meatless Mondays in Hawaii public schools came close to enactment in the Hawaii State Legislature in 2019, and supporters are hopeful it will become law next year.

One of the worlds leading voices condemning meat consumption is the United Nations. In 2018 it bestowed one of its Champions of the Earth awards to Patrick O. Brown of Impossible Foods and Ethan Brown of Beyond Meat. The awards follow and buttress UN Environment Programme claims that our use of animals as a food-production technology has brought us to the verge of catastrophe.

Both Browns insist that, because the destructive impact of animal agriculture on our environment far exceeds that of any other technology on Earth, there is no pathway to achieve the Paris climate objectives without a massive decrease in the scale of animal agriculture.

The anti-meat campaign has hit other top echelons of the UN. Christiana Figueres, former executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention onClimateChange, recently stated her hope that restaurants of the future will treat carnivores the same way that smokers are treated [today]. If they want to eat meat, they can do it outside the restaurant. But not the way theyre treating meat at COP-25 in Madrid.

The UN is also touting a study, published in the journal Nature, which claims that huge reductions in meat eating are essential to avoid dangerous climate change. The authors implore western countries to cut their beef consumption by 90 percent.

Then in almost its next breath, the UN hosts yet another gala affair and lavish meals at 5-star hotels in Bali, Brazil and other lovely locations, attended by countless thousands of activists, bureaucrats, reporters and politicians. Why should these ruling elites have to worry about carbon footprints and rules they promulgate for the rest of us, the worlds unwashed masses, who will comply or face the consequences?

The Economist published results of two other studies claiming that going vegan for two-thirds of meals could cut food-related carbon emissions by 60 percent. Total veganism is the most environmentally friendly, with die-hard leaf-eaters claiming to have knocked 85% off their carbon footprint.

It all follows a familiar, predictable, totalitarian pattern that ought to set off global alarms. Find a target of eco-progressive hate. Vilify the target, and demand that it be restricted or eradicated to prevent yet another civilizational or planetary cataclysm. Redefine science and morality to drive the agenda. Reward and publicize those who support the claims and campaign. Condemn and silence anyone who questions or challenges them. Impose new rules.

On climate change, assume and assert that carbon dioxide and methane are the primary or only factors. That any weather and climate changes today are unprecedented, existential threats. That anyone who challenges these assertions is a denier who must be silenced, jailed, exiled and re-educated.

Danish environmental economist Bjorn Lomborg, mocks the anti-meat studies and arguments. Lomborg is a vegetarian himself but says 1.45 billion of the worlds people are vegetarians because of their extreme poverty, and many of them desperately want to be able to afford meat in their diets.

He chastises those who claim going vegetarian will cut carbon footprints in half, noting that food-related emissions account for just 20% of total carbon dioxide releases. A study of Swedish vegetarians found that lifelong vegetarianism would reduce net carbon dioxide emissions just 2 percent. Meanwhile, Chinese and Indian coal-fired power plant emissions dwarf those savings 100 times over.

Moreover, healthy vegetarian diets require very careful attention to food and supplements, to ensure proper nutrition; vegan diets even more so. Thats impossible in impoverished countries and families.

Enormous environmental and agricultural problems also loom. Cattle, sheep and pigs can graze on lands that would be plowed under for food crops under an all-veggie dictatorship. But that same system is determined to replace fossil fuels with wind turbines, solar panels, biofuels and batteries that would make tens of millions of acres unavailable or unsuitable for growing the needed food crops.

And those same activists, bureaucrats and politicians also want to ban modern hybrid and biotech seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and mechanized farming. Wed get even less food from diminished acreage. More and more people would become increasingly malnourished, starve, go blind, and die.

Reduced atmospheric carbon dioxide would mean plants would be deprived of their basic building block and need more water in a water-starved world. If the planet cools, instead of warming, we would have far less arable land, shorter growing seasons, and still worse agricultural conditions. More would starve.

Do you know whats in those plant-based meats those ultra-processed imitation meats that are assembled in industrial factories and enhanced with chemicals to make vegan burgers more tasty and palatable? Tasty ingredients like methylcellulose, titanium dioxide, propylene glycol, ferric phosphate and magnesium carbonate. Do grasshoppers and other tasty insects count as meat?

The truth is, the vegan revolution is overstated. A recent Gallup poll found only 5% of Americans are vegetarian and just 3% are vegan. But 16% of liberals are vegetarian or vegan, compared with just 2% of conservatives. The numbers are much higher for younger progressives in the USA and elsewhere.

Those numbers almost certainly reflect the constant indoctrination, fear-mongering and silencing of skeptical voices in schools from kindergarten through graduate school; on social and in large segments of traditional media; in political circles; and in the UN and other unaccountable government organizations.

It also helps explain how and why Goldsmiths, in the University of London, has been able to ban beef from the entire campus. Goldsmiths professor France Corner has sounded the predictable alarm: The growing global call for organizations to take seriously their responsibilities for halting climate change is impossible to ignore. Especially if his campus is as intolerant of other views as are so many others and so willing to lash out verbally, physically and with threats of expulsion against any contrarians.

Its one more example of our progressive elites taking us down the road to totalitarian rule all in the name of saving us and the only planet we have from imminent manmade catastrophe. Whether the goal is to enlist vegans and vegetarians in the climate catastrophe movement, or to include veganism as a basic tenet of that movement, the result is the same.

Either be prepared for more anti-meat protests, more Meatless Mondays, more assaults on the livestock industry, more calls for taxing meat to raise its cost above what ordinary people can afford and more totalitarian control of our lives. Or start fighting back against these intolerant control freaks.

My Health, My Choice: The benefits of the flu vaccine – VVdailypress.com

A healthy lifestyle includes many different components. Diet and exercise are arguably the two most significant elements of a healthy lifestyle, but being healthy and avoiding illness involves more than just eating right and getting off the couch.

Preventive care can be critical to long-term health. A healthy diet and routine exercise can help lower the risk for various ailments, including heart disease and diabetes. But what about preventing more routine conditions, including the flu?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that the flu vaccine prevents millions of illnesses and flu-related doctor visits every year. Despite the effectiveness of the flu vaccine, some people still dont get one each year.

But a look at some of the many benefits of being vaccinated against the flu might compel such men and women to change their minds and get their flu shots this year.

While its common sense to note that the flu shot keeps you from getting the flu, just how effective the flu vaccination can be might open the eyes of even the most ardent flu-shot opponents.

According to the CDC, in seasons when the flu vaccine viruses matched circulating strains, the vaccine has been shown to reduce the risk of having to go to the doctor by as much as 60%.

The flu shot can also save you money and vacation time. The CDC estimated that 48.8 million people got sick with the flu during the 2017-18 flu season. In addition, the CDC estimates that the flu caused workers to miss approximately 17 million workdays and led to more than 950,000 hospitalizations.

The cost of a hospital stay is often considerable, and workers who value their vacation and personal time will almost certainly lament having to use some of that time at home nursing the flu. By getting the flu shot, anyone can greatly reduce their risk of spending time and hard-earned money recovering from the flu.

The flu shot can help prevent serious medical events. A 2013 meta-analysis of various studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that the influenza vaccine was associated with a lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events among people with heart disease.

In addition, the CDC notes that previous studies have found that the flu vaccination has been associated with reduced hospitalizations among people with diabetes and chronic lung disease.

The flu shot can protect children. Humans immune systems mature as they grow, and the flu vaccine can be an invaluable ally to children as their immune systems are still evolving.

A 2014 study published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases found that children who were fully vaccinated were between 74 and 82% less likely to be admitted to pediatric intensive care units than unvaccinated children.

The flu is a formidable foe. But an annual flu shot can bolster everyones chances of beating or even avoiding the flu.
