Six Ways to Support a Friend with Cancer | SBM – Society of Behavioral Medicine

Hearing the news that a friend has been diagnosed with cancer can come as a shock. You might want to help in some way or you might feel confused about what to do. If youre at a loss, here are some tips on how you can support someone with cancer.

It can be difficult to know how to talk with someone who is going through a serious medical problem. But do not be afraid to talk with your friend. It is better to say, I dont know what to say, than to stop calling or visiting out of fear. Allow for sadness, worry, anger, or guilt; it is normal to feel these emotions. While they might be uncomfortable, just letting yourself feel them is helpful. Do not ignore uncomfortable topics or feelings.

Remeber that everyone experiences illness differently and your friend may or may not want to discuss their diagnosis. Follow your friends cues. Its okay to just ask, Do you want to talk about it?" If so, be supportive and validating; if they have worries or concerns, try not to dismiss them by forcing optimism or cheerfulness. If not, talking about topics other than cancer like your friends interests and hobbies can be a nice break. Be present and listen attentively.

You can communicate with someone in many ways. A phone call, text message, or video call can show that you care. Let your friend know its okay if they do not reply.

Your help with daily tasks and chores is often valuable. Have a conversation, assess their needs, and offer to play a specific role. Be creative with the help you offer. Remember that your friends needs may change, so be flexible in shifting your plans as needed. Let them know that you are available if an unexpected need comes up.

Many people find it hard to ask for help. If your friend declines an offer, do not take it personally. If receiving practical help is difficult for your friend, you can gently remind them that you do not expect them to return the favor and you do it because you care. While not being pushy, try to suggest specific tasks. Instead of asking, How can I help?, ask specifically to avoid overwhelming your friend.

Here are some suggestions:

Instead of trying to do it all, try rallying a support team to help a friend living with cancer. With their permission, you can use online tools (from websites like CaringBridge) to coordinate tasks among friends and caregivers. You can also make a paper calendar to hand write various activities and commitments. Make sure your friend has access to the calendar, so they know what to expect and when.

Often, people are so focused on the patients and how theyre doing that they forget to ask caregivers how theyre doing. However, research tells us that cancer caregivers are vulnerable to stress and burnout. Theyre trying to juggle their existing roles and take over new responsibilities that the patient used to do. Try to give the caregiver a breakfor example, offer to help with specific tasksor some quality time with their loved one. And above all, be a friend to the caregiver.

Patients need support throughout the entire cancer experience, not just at the beginning. Offers of help often flood in when patients are diagnosed, but then reduce to a trickle. Its important to remember that help is not just needed when theyre first diagnosed or in the hospital. Remember that friends also need encouragement and support after cancer treatment has finished. After treatment, your friend may be trying to find his or her "new normal." Friendships are an important part of that. With these practical suggestions in mind, your friendship can make a lasting difference to a person living with cancer.

Its important to remember that there are no set rules and every friendship is different. Think about your unique dynamic and let that guide you as you try to support your friend. Keep it simple and remember that the little things can often mean the most.

Secret of healthy living unveiled to women – Daily Sun

Chijioke Agwu, Abakaliki

Over hundred and twenty women of child-bearing age drawn from various communities in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi state have recently received free nutrition and dietetics counselling from the Dietitians Association of Nigeria (DAN) of the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (AE-FUTHA), Ebonyi state.

The free nutrition counselling took place as part of activities marking the 2020 World Dietitians Day in the state.

Addressing stakeholders and women who came out for the exercise, leader of the team of dietician-nutritionists to the outreach, Mrs. Lynda Okpara, noted that good nutrition is an important part of a healthy life.

She explained that the outreach was to help women especially those who were still bearing children to know the kinds of food they should be eating to help them conceive easily and for the healthy growth of the pregnancy through delivery time.

She urged them to imbibe the habit of good dieting; stressing that good food at the right time and the right quantity help to reduce risk of obesity and some chronic diseases such as cancer.

Okpara also enjoined them to always consult professional dietician-nutritionists to advise them on the kinds, times and quantity of foods to eat, maintaining that most of the health challenges women have often come from eating wrong foods at the wrong time.

According to her, Healthy diet promotes healthy pregnancy outcomes, supports normal growth, development and ageing. It also helps to maintain a healthy body weight and reduces the risks of chronic diseases leading to overall health and well-being.

Okpara further explained that the association chose Ohaukwu for the outreach because of the prevalence of malnutrition in infants and children in the council area.

Wife of the council boss, Mrs. Chinenye Odah, in her remarks, thanked the association for choosing her council and expressed the optimism that the lessons of the outreach will go a long way in helping women in the area especially those within child bearing age to eat well and live well.

Earlier in her welcome address, Chairman of Dietitians Association of Nigeria in the state, Ihuoma Utom, lamented that the profession has been infiltrated by quacks, causing more harm than good to the profession and the society in general.

She warned Nigerians against patronizing unprofessional dietitians saying that they offer more deaths and health problems than life.

She explained that the upsurge in the incidence and prevalence of diet related non-communicable chronic diseases in the World (NCDs) has increased public awareness and interest in human nutrition.

Utom listed some of the diet-relatednon-communicable diseases to include obesity, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteoporosis and dental disease.

She commended the management of the hospital for its support to the department but called on it to provide the department with a vehicle to enable them take the message of nutrition to the grassroots.

Established in 2001 in the then Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abakaliki, the department of nutrition and dietetics in AE-FUTHA todayhas 22 dietitians consisting of 21 females and one male; in addition to 83 interns.

Healthy Living: Stress vs anxiety – Q13 FOX

Please enable Javascript to watch this video

SEATTLE -- Are you suffering from anxiety or is it stress?

May is Mental Health Month, and because many of us are living with a lot of uncertainty right now, we wanted to talk with the behavioral health medical director with Regence, Dr. Jim Polo, about the differences between the two.

Stress and anxiety share many similar emotional and physical symptoms, uneasiness, fear, tension, headaches, increase of blood pressure, challenges with sleepUnderstanding the differences between the two can actually help you improve both.

Dr. Polo says stress is usually a response usually to an external threat in a situation.

The threat of COVID infection is a great is a great example of a potential external threat. But threats can be as simple as an argument with somebody or missing a deadline. Our response to that stress is what then helps us deal with the threat and when the threat is resolved, usually the stress goes away with it.

Anxiety, on the other hand, is a feeling that is driven internally as a specific response to whatever the stress is that somebody is feeling.

Typically that feeling is one of dread and apprehension in situations that really arent threatening. And furthermore, even when the concern is resolved, that feeling tends to persist. Those feelings can be irrational. They can be intrusive. They may not even make sense to you.

Dr. Polo says anxiety can create some big challenges with both cognitive and behavioral functioning. It can even lead to excessive worry or panic.

There are some things Dr. Polo says you can do to cope.

Seek out relaxation training, meditation, social support. Focus on underlying stress. It might sound counter intuitive, but that way you can resolve the stress and you wont have feelings of anxiety. Stress can also be managed when you focus on the things you can control versus those that you dont.

You cant control whether you are gonna get infected but you can control wearing a mask, you can control washing your hands.

Because Dr. Polo says stress comes with a lot of physical symptoms: it tends to zap our energy, take away our motivation and affect our mood. Some simple lifestyle changes like adding exercise into your routine of focusing on your sleep can really help you manage chronic stress, which in turn leads to lower anxiety.

Healthy Living: Mental Health Month, differences in therapy – Q13 News Seattle

SEATTLE We are all experiencing added stress right now, and a lot of us are paying some extra attention to our physical health, but it is vital to prioritize your mental health just as much.

Getting professional help is not a sign of weakness. In fact, it is a sign of strength, Dr. Jim Polo, the Behavioral Health Medical Director with Regence, says. It means you have identified a problem and that youre willing to get help to make it better.

Please enable Javascript to watch this video

May is Mental Health Month so we wanted to talk about access to mental health providers and the differences in treatment.

Dr. Polo says finding help can be a tall task for some.

Once you make that decision it can be overwhelming. It can be a daunting experience. There are two things you have to think about. What kind of support do you need, and then how do you find that support?

There are different types of behavioral health providers. Counselors and therapists are those providers that Dr. Polo says can help you with problems that are generally new or current and will likely meet with you on a weekly basis, many of them are seeing people virtually.

They will help you with how you are thinking and feeling about a situation and also maybe sometimes with some of your behavior in relationship to that situation.

For more complex issues, Dr. Polo says you may seek out a psychologist. A psychologist can do the same things as a counselor or therapist but psychologists are going to dig a little deeper. In addition to how you are feeling about the situation, they are likely going to help you with how you feel about yourself.

Dr. Polo says some people might need to take it a step further and see a psychiatrist.

Now that you know what kind of support you need, next is figuring out where to go, and a lot of us know that can be a daunting task.

I would recommend that you first consider talking with family and friends," Dr. Polo says. "For one, you will realize many other folks are struggling and have already reached out to get help. And theres nothing better than getting a recommendation from somebody who is already a trusted counselor.

Dr. Polo says you can also talk with your primary care doctor as they often know who is available. Your health plan can also give you resources that are available in your area.

Getting professional help with a behavioral health provider is a little bit like dating. It doesnt always work out the first time. It is all about that fit. Certainly you want to make sure that the person has the experience and skills to handle your particular problem, but you want to feel comfortable with this person. You want to feel like you can trust them with some of your personal details.

Dr. Polo reminds us when you are reaching out for behavioral health, one size doesnt fit all.

Packing on pandemic pounds and how to turn it around – Boston Herald

If youve gained weight during the COVID-19 pandemic, you arent alone. The Quarantine 15 referring to weight gain some people have experienced since stay-at-home guidelines went into effect is likely due to a disruption in daily routine and habits.

Peoples habits have changed quite a bit since were spending more time at home, said Dr. Donald Hensrud, medical director of Mayo Clinics Healthy Living Program. And those changes in habits can lead to health and medical issues down the road.

Now, I want to make a point, for some people getting enough food, getting enough calories and maintaining weight may be an issue, Hensrud said. Some people may have to worry about maintaining their weight not unintentionally losing weight. But for many of us, our habits have changed.

Change in movement

For example, people think about exercise right away, and they should, Hensrud said. Fitness centers are closed, people may be doing less exercise and burning less calories through activity that way. What people dont think quite as much about though is low-level activity throughout the day. Even if we have a desk job, we have to walk at least to our car to get to work. We may walk throughout the day; we may walk to lunch. And, so, for spending time at home, that low-level activity may be causing us to burn fewer overall calories.

Consuming more calories

We may be consuming more calories. On the good side, were eating out less at restaurants. Sometimes that can be high-calorie. We still may be taking takeout at home, so there might be a little bit of a good thing there, a decrease in calories. However, many people are stocking up frozen foods and processed foods that have a long shelf life. Many times, theyre higher in calories and less healthy. On the flip side, for example, fruits and vegetables. They dont last as long, and we may be consuming less of them. There are a number of reasons why we might be at risk for weight gain through our habits that have changed, both in burning activity and in consuming more calories, Hensrud said.

Why weight gain matters

A few pounds short term may not make a difference. It could be fluid. It might be just a little weight gain while we establish new routines. Obviously, the more weight we gain and the longer its maintained, the more it affects our health, Hensrud said. For children, for example, its been shown that childrens weight tracks to some extent. If children establish those habits, or lack of healthy habits when theyre young and they gain weight, that might persist as they go into adolescence and adulthood.

Similarly, with adults, as we maintain those habits, if we can establish a new routine, the longer this goes on, then we can arrest that weight gain and try and maintain a normal weight. Its more important for some people than others. For example, people who have diabetes or high blood pressure. Just a modest amount of weight gain in some people, if theyre sensitive to that, can increase their blood glucose and blood pressure, and they wont have as good control over these factors, over these conditions. So, it depends on the individual, it depends on their health conditions, and it depends on long-term habits or routines, Hensrud said.

Establish new habits

With all habits, it takes time to establish them, so everybody is getting accustomed to this new normal. Id encourage people to establish those new healthy habits now. You have to be a little proactive about this, and thatll make it easier in the long term. Break out of your comfort zone, Hensrud said.

Instead of giving in to large amounts of comfort food, this can be an opportunity to take foods that we may not think of as healthy you can make burritos, bean burritos or even pizza. If you make it in the correct way, it can be a healthy food. Invest some time. Planning is a real key here if you plan ahead rather than just grabbing something at the last moment. Try and raise your culinary skills and do a little bit more cooking. Its an opportunity for that, too. So, if we can embrace this, embrace our new normal, look for opportunities to establish new healthy routines.

Eating healthy and eating well dont have to be drudgery. It can and should be an enjoyable way to live. And if we can do that, then we can better manage our weight and our overall health during this pandemic, Hensrud said.

Spokane health board member who spread misinformation at May Day stay-home rally draws criticism from colleagues – The Spokesman-Review

As several hundred protesters rallied at the Spokane County Courthouse on May 1 demanding that Gov. Jay Inslee lift his stay-home order, some elected leaders who serve on the local board of health noticed the familiar face of Jason Kinley among the dense, mostly unmasked throng.

Isnt that the gentleman that was just appointed to the board? Spokane County Commissioner Mary Kuney, who was there to promote the efforts of local officials, remembered asking Millwood Mayor Kevin Freeman as the crowd dispersed.

It was. And he had just sounded off on a number of things that contradict accepted public health advice and the mission of the Spokane regions response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kinley, a naturopathic doctor since 2016, was appointed to the Spokane Regional Health Districts Board of Health in December. In that role he helps set local public health policy. Spokane County Commissioner Josh Kerns, who appointed Kinley, said he did so in part because Kinley was the only applicant.

Kerns and other board members recall Kinley asking thoughtful questions since his first meeting in January, and that he had ideas about promoting healthful eating. Nothing he said raised any red flags in regards to his stances on public health issues, a number of officials said.

A health board meeting held via Zoom the day before the protest followed that pattern. Kinley asked questions about local suicide-prevention efforts, the use of antibody testing and high-dose intravenous vitamin C as a treatment for COVID-19.

And Spokane County Health Officer Dr. Bob Lutz had a thoughtful answer for most of them. When he didnt, he said hed look into it.

The next day Rep. Matt Shea announced to hundreds of protesters among them children, business owners, conspiracy theorists, conservative religious leaders and members of far-right organizations that he had a medical professional and good friend who doesnt agree with pandemic-related public health efforts.

Kinley, who did not respond to multiple requests for comment for this article, grabbed the microphone with a smile and then launched into a minuteslong polemic deriding stay-home orders and widely accepted public health guidelines offered at the state, local and national level.

Some of the topics he had asked Lutz about were then used as ammunition for Kinley to attack local and state initiatives.

Without referring to Kinley directly, Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich has referred to high-dose Vitamin C and other unproven treatments discussed by Kinley at the protest as snake oil medicine.

Some of what Kinley said at the May 1 rally was true, according to public health and medical experts, but those statements were often followed by unproven public health claims, misinformation and potentially harmful medical advice.

Many local leaders say it undermines the public health mission of Spokane health board, as well as the efforts of many others in the community working on the regional COVID-19 response at the health district and regional Emergency Operations Center.

Now, more than ever, they say, is the time for leaders to embrace sound medical advice to present a unified voice to lead Spokane through the COVID-19 pandemic.

We have suppressed life to prevent illness, but in so doing tragically created additional health problems, Kinley told the protesters at the beginning of his speech.

That may be partly true some hospitals are concerned treatment for serious health problems may be dangerously delayed due to a myriad of issues surrounding the pandemic but much of what followed was laden with conjecture in falsities.

Suicides are up, Kinley declared, citing a news report from Oregon, before critiquing the Spokane Regional Health Districts response to mental health issues.

He told protesters he is a health board member and that at a recent meeting no one had a concrete plan to address mental health issues exacerbated by pandemic-related issues.

There is no evidence that suicide rates in Spokane have climbed during the pandemic, according to Kuney. Furthermore, a 40-plus person task force at the regional level is working to address a potential rise in mental health issues.

Lutz told Kinley during that meeting that health officials are closely monitoring emergency room data and other evidence that would show an increase of suicide attempts or suicidal ideation.

At the protest, Kinley also criticized Inslee for his goal to have a vaccine or widely accepted treatment for COVID-19 before Washington fully reopens.

Its a virus. Look at any other virus out there, Kinley told protesters. There is no widely accepted treatment.

However, that isnt quite true.

Therapies and drugs for the majority of viruses fight symptoms and work to support the bodys natural immune response, according to health officials. There are also targeted antiviral treatments for diseases such as HIV and influenza.

During his speech, Kinley discounted the dismissal of hydroxychloroquine, an anti-inflammatory medication known for treating malaria and linked to an increase in risk of death for some COVID-19 patients, and promoted another unproven method to protesters: high-dose vitamin C.

Kinley also has told people via Facebook that he will provide the treatment at his clinic. During the protest he criticized public health officials for not discussing it more.

So far there is no evidence from U.S. hospitals that the experimental treatments provide any benefits to COVID-19 patients, said Dr. Deborah Wiser, a public health expert and chief clinical officer at CHAS Health. She also said treatment strategies are generally discussed within hospitals, not among public health officials.

Lutz informed Kinley of many of those facts during the health board meeting as well.

On some (treatment) protocols I have seen IV vitamin C. Ive also seen, interestingly enough, hydroxychloroquine, in light of the fact that we know people have actually died taking hydroxychloroquine, Lutz said.

During the protest Kinley also made misinformed statements about antibody testing and its role in contact tracing.

He said if he performs the test, which isnt recommended by local officials or necessarily covered by insurance, he would be required to perform contact tracing if someone had the novel coronavirus. He then claimed that smartphone apps for contact tracing will soon become mandatory.

So far antibody tests have only been used for studies of community prevalence of COVID-19 and not contact tracing, Wiser said. And though there are some voluntary apps available for contact tracing, she is not aware of any efforts to make them mandatory.

Kinley also shared with protesters his personal doubts regarding the effectiveness of people wearing face masks in public to suppress the spread of disease.

But researchers who modeled the effectiveness of masking found that when both 50% of the population and 80 to 90% of the population practiced social distancing and masking with no lockdown, it would result in a substantial reduction of infection.

And weve seen this trend in some other communities that have universal mask wearing, Wiser said.

Additional models show the lack of masks could lead to further community spread.

Wiser said Kinleys comments reflect the moral line between individual patient health and privacy versus public health.

For example, Wiser said people wearing masks are helping to protect the public, not necessarily themselves. Those individuals who dont wear a mask exhale, cough and sneeze into air that others dont necessarily have a choice to avoid, risking public health.

If enough individuals make a choice for public protection, then the public benefit is seen, Wiser said. But if an individual was put first in those situations, then disease can be spread.

The board seat Kinley filled earlier this year sat vacant for months following the resignation of Dr. Donald Condon, a local family physician with more than 40 years of experience, according to Kerns, the county commissioner.

Kerns said he reached out to a number of local medical professionals who might have similar expertise to Condons, but no one was interested.

As other board members called on Kerns to fill the spot, he said he only had Kinleys application to consider. He said Kinleys medical experience as a naturopathic doctor from the last few years was a plus.

But a naturopathic doctor is not the same as a medical physician.

Stephen Pakkianathan, president of the Spokane County Medical Society, said medical doctors are the best equipped to be leaders on health care issues, though he noted naturopathic doctors have valid experience in their own field.

As opposed to medical doctors, Wiser said naturopathic doctors often focus on herbal remedies, supplements and non-FDA-approved treatments, along with hands-on treatments like acupuncture and soft-tissue manipulation.

For that reason, Wiser said it was unusual for Kinley to discuss an unproven treatment like hydroxychloroquine at the protest.

Medical and naturopathic doctors also diverge in clinical experience.

After earning a degree naturopathic doctors complete one to two years of residency, often in private clinics or schools, according to Wiser. Medical doctors complete at least three years of residency, usually in a mix of inpatient and outpatient settings such as large hospitals and physician clinics.

He seemed to know public health very well, Kerns said of Kinley. He talked about healthy living and some innovative ideas for outreach.

But when reviewing Kinleys application materials, Kerns said he did not become aware of Kinleys ties to Shea.

Kinley appeared on Sheas radio show in 2018 and cast doubt on the safety of vaccines. He also has appeared in local videos with vaccine opponent Jaclyn Gallion.

He also testified against a mandatory school vaccination bill in the state House in March 2019.

More recently, Kinley appeared on the Christian political talk show Church and State which has shared COVID-19-related conspiracy theories on social media and espouses support for Shea to discuss the pandemic.

Kerns distanced himself from Shea, who endorsed him in 2016, saying he was concerned about the investigative report that alleged Shea participated in planning political violence and engaged in an act of domestic terrorism.

Kuney and fellow Commissioner Al French said commissioners defer to the nominating commissioner when they approve each of their citizen appointments. Kuney said she looked over Kinleys resume, while French said he could not recall doing so.

Kuneys citizen appointee is former Spokane Valley City Council member and retired school administrator Chuck Hafner, who will serve on the board until 2021.

French appointed Andrea Frostad, who has a dental hygiene background, in 2018.

Ted Cummings, a Democrat who has run against Shea in the past and filed to run for Kerns seat on the commission Friday morning, said he is concerned that Kinleys name passed through the nomination process without due diligence on the part of other board members.

I think its outrageous, said Cummings, who said he supports more local control over COVID-19 measures but respects Inslees decisions.

Kerns said many citizen board seats sit vacant for months or only garner one applicant.

If you have a passion for something, if you are interested in a topic, I always encourage people to apply, Kerns said.

Pakkianathan said he didnt know whether Kerns reached out to the medical society about the open board seat and added he was not aware the citizen board position existed.

He said the medical society exists partly as a resource to connect people outside health care with medical professionals.

Not all physicians want to be leaders or serve on boards, but many of them do, Pakkianathan said.

A number of health board members are now concerned about Kinleys future participation on the board.

We speak as one voice for the board, Kuney said. We really have to be looking out for public health.

Kuney said she believes Spokane County is ready to reopen responsibly and said elected leaders and health officials are looking for thoughtful solutions as opposed to protesters shouting demands in close proximity.

She said the information Kinley provided was also concerning because he provided his opinion as a medical expert.

Freeman, the Millwood mayor, said he believes the duty of a board member is to support public health.

And I dont believe his viewpoints or stance (at the protest) were in support of public health, Freeman said.

I was disappointed to see him in that setting, knowing that he is a voting member of the board of health and his views, quite honestly, are in direct opposition.

Freeman also said he hoped Kinley would rely on sufficient research before discussing unproven treatments.

His words still carry more weight than others, Freeman said. And he needs to be conscious of his position.

Freeman also said he may further scrutinize Kinleys positions on health issues in the future.

We really should be coming together to support those decisions made, especially if youre representing yourself as a board member, said Spokane Valley Mayor Ben Wick, the chairman of the board of health. We all might not agree on the directions or the decisions made, but we should all work together to move the community forward.

Wick said the board could have conversations about ethics and the role of board members in light of the situation.

I dont get to say who the commissioners appoint to the board, but I think well continue to clarify with all of our board members what the role is and that the spokesperson for the board is our health officer, Wick said.

Spokane City Council President Breean Beggs, who wasnt at the protest and hasnt heard Kinleys speech, said he is a proponent of political diversity, but that dissent becomes different when people are looking to a leader for medical advice.

If someones really committed to being a political ideologue against public health, that could be a problem, Beggs said about the potential to undermine funding and the work of staff members. Its not that hes not entitled to his opinion.

Kerns said it likely wasnt appropriate for Kinley to participate in the protest but respects his ability to choose what he does in his free time. He noted Kinley never told protesters he was speaking on behalf of the board but was completely false in his statements about the local response to mental health issues.

Is it something I would have done? No, said Kerns, who later watched the speech on YouTube.

As long as discourse between public health officials, board members and Kinley stays respectful, Kerns said he doesnt have a problem with him being on the board. He also said Kinley has voted with the majority during all meetings.

Kinley was not present during a special meeting on May 11 where board members voted to send a letter to Inslee requesting the county move onto Phase 2 of the states Safe Start reopening plan. Kuney said he emailed the board to say he had patients and was not available until after the meeting.

French, who did not attend a board of health meeting between December and April, said he did not see a problem with Kinleys participation and said he deferred to other board members who were more equipped to talk about Kinleys work on the board.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion, said French, who noted the importance of having a variety of perspectives on boards. Isnt that the First Amendment?

To think that everybody is going to sit quietly as their lives are destroyed and feel they have their freedoms taken away is unrealistic, French said later.

Former Spokane County Health Officer Dr. Kim Thorburn, who was voted out by the health board in 2006 following administrative disputes, said she recognizes the problem posed by board members who dont support public health.

I was fairly new when we had a major, communitywide hepatitis A outbreak, said Thorburn, who noted a few board members were against vaccines.

A number of outbreaks were associated with restaurants, including one that had transmission among employees, so Thorburn said she proposed inviting people to be vaccinated and targeted largely unvaccinated populations for outreach.

So there was pushback on that from the board, Thorburn said. This was all based on data that we were doing this pretty aggressive stuff, but its challenging when the politics are brought in.

But she said she never dealt with a board member advocating against policies at a protest.

Thats outrageous, she said.

Thorburn said its generally the expectation on boards that once a decision is made, leaders fall in line and support initiatives.

We need to come together, Thorburn said. Its important to hear (the publics) concerns, but also for them to understand what were doing and why were doing it.

David Beckham discusses healthy living with Mourinho & more Tottenham stars – FootballFanCast.com

6 minute read 13/5/2020 | 06:09pm

Ex-England star David Beckham has travelled to Tottenhams glitzy stadium to discuss topics such as mental health, sleep and nutrition in order to achieve the maximal results out on the pitch for his new side Inter Miami.

The owner of the newly-formed MLS side is keen to find out how to obtain the best results for the players of his new team, and courtesy of AIA, Beckham has been afforded some insight from a few key figures for Tottenham.

The former Manchester United hero chatted to Spurs boss Jose Mourinho about the aforementioned topics, while some of the north London outfits stars such as Heung-min Son, Lucas Moura and Harry Winks also shared their thoughts the set-piece specialist also met with defensive prospect Japhet Tanganga.

Beckham said: As an owner I want to help my team, Inter Miami, be the best they possibly can. Together with the teams at AIA and Spurs we are looking at nutrition, mental health and sleep to see how they impact player performance.

The man whose set-piece deliveries dazzled thousands specifically asked Mourinho how he deals with the mental aspect of promoting a young prospect into the first team, something that the ex-Chelsea boss did not too long ago with the introduction of Tanganga.

Mourinho replied: I think its more difficult to cope with the social pressure than the football pressure, thats the toughest part.

If you feel pressure to be here (on the pitch) you dont belong here. If you feel pressure because you want to be a normal kid, 20 to 25 years old and the world doesnt let you, that is a different thing and in academies I think they focus a lot on this part and help them to cope with what is waiting for them outside.

Following this exchange, Beckham marvelled at the facilities on show at Tottenhams new state-of-the-art stadium when saying: To have an environment like this is incredible for players.

The impressive arena has a capacity of 62,062 and boasts Europes longest bar, containing 65 food and drink outlets as well as a microbrewery inside the ground the supporters must absolutely love it.

On the topic of sleep, Beckham made a humorous jibe towards Tottenhams angel of Amsterdam, Lucas Moura of course, the pair were teammates while at Paris Saint-Germain.

I have never seen anyone sleep as much as this man by the way. The moment we got on the bus, the plane, the hotel, the restaurant, everywhere he would sleep!

On a more serious note, the Brazilian stated: I think the most important thing of course is on the pitch, but today we know thats not enough. We need to take care of our body and our food, and of course to sleep well is very important.

A more qualified figure on the topic Spurs Acting Head of Medical Geoff Scott shared a few helpful tips for those wanting to improve the quality of their sleep.

Scott said: One of the things you can do is go to bed at the same time each night and something as simple as that can have you in a good rhythm. Other little things like not using your screens or your phones in the last half an hour before bed.

In Sons case, the mesmeric forward kept things short and sweet when saying: When I go to training, I want to go with a fresh mind and a fresh body.

Elsewhere, while Tottenhams No.8 wasnt asked how he achieves more than just 40 winks a night (see what we did there?), the England international did discuss the importance of nutrition and also revealed how the Spurs players watch what they eat.

Winks said: I suppose its just the way the game is evolving, now its becoming so intense that its important you stay on top of your health. Weve got two nutritionists who come in and help with our diet, give us ideas on what to eat and test our body fat.

Lastly, AIAs Global Ambassador in Beckham said: As a new club owner with Inter Miami CF I want to help our team be the best they can be. I am grateful to AIA for giving me the opportunity to learn about Spurs pioneering approach to player health and wellness and to get insight from a manager as experienced and successful as Jose was a real privilege.

There is a lot of science and new thinking in the game since I was a player but its clear that simple things like a solid routine and great sleep are still really important. I am proud to partner with AIA and to see first-hand their commitment to supporting people to live healthier lives.

Mourinho also rounded off the ex-LA Galaxy superstars visit to north London by saying: It was a pleasure to welcome a true football legend like David back to the Club earlier this season and to learn about his affinity to Tottenham Hotspur through his family ties and training at the Club in 2011.

We also spent time discussing the virtues of team preparation and ensuring the players are in peak condition both physically and mentally. Leading a healthy lifestyle has never been more important than at the current time and we are proud of AIAs great work to promote well-being through our partnership with them.

Vegan-Friendly Restaurants in the UK Will Be Easier to Find Thanks to New Sticker Campaign – VegNews

Nonprofit organization Vegan-Friendly UK recently launched the Vegan-Friendly certification symbol to help vegan-friendly businesses promote their vegan options. The heart-shaped symbol identifies restaurants that qualify as vegan-friendly if their menus boost a wide variety of vegan dishes. Originally founded in Israel, the organization expanded to the United Kingdom in an effort to increase the presence of vegan options and make veganism more accessible by encouraging businesses to add vegan options.

We will improve the visibility and exposure of restaurants which serve a minimum of 25-percent vegan options by labeling them both digitally and physically, Ofek Ron, Vegan-Friendly General Manager, said. We will also provide restaurants with free hands-on training and guidance on how to switch ingredients in their dishes to improve their vegan offering. In our Israeli venture, with our assistance, the restaurants we work with have been able to sell approximately 20 percent more vegan dishes than before. This meant that these restaurants were, in turn, selling less meat dishes and more vegan dishes.

The Vegan-Friendly certification will initially launch with an online presence and once restaurants begin to open following the COVID-19 lockdown, Londoners will start noticing heart-shaped stickers at the entrance of their favorite vegan-friendly restaurants.

Colby Cosh: Is Bryan Adams bad because he’s a good vegan? Or forgivable only for being a bad one? – National Post

I get it: its not healthy to turn someones bad Twitter day into a scrap of journalism. This is a principle we will have all absorbed within five or 10 years, and I dont like to run afoul of it. But Bryan Adams train wreck is legitimately interesting, right?

On Instagram Monday, Adams pondered the sad fact that he had been scheduled to begin a series of shows at the Royal Albert Hall on that date. Instead, thanks to some fking bat eating, wet market animal selling, virus making greedy bastards, the whole world is now on hold, not to mention the thousands that have suffered or died from this virus. My message to them other than thanks a fking lot is to go vegan.

The anti-Chinese subtext of this complaint did not go unnoticed. It would be hard to miss, especially since it incorporates three different theories of how the novel coronavirus entered human populations, one of which (someone made the virus) directly contradicts the other two. Even an intelligent vegan and lack of cognitive ability is not typically what makes people vegan would surely find this a little awkward.

All right, buddy, you think open-air food markets that sell meat are morally equivalent to genocide anyway. Its only natural that you would assign a mass human calamity to wet markets, just as it is very natural for us anticommunists to attribute the pandemic to communist habits of censorship, politicized science and xenophobic dread. (To say nothing of actual genocide.)

But if anyone designed and unleashed the Wuhan virus in a lab hoping to make life better for meat producers and consumers, that was definitely a weird choice of tactic. If anything the results of the pandemic look more like a vegan terrorists dream of revenge against workers in meat-packing plants, who, by vegan logic, a) completely deserve what they had coming to them; and b) are not to be regarded as having any more value, individually, as the beasts that they slaughter in large quantities for a living.

COVID-19 is, as far as we know, exclusively killing those of us at the tippy-top of the food chain. Wildlife is having a jubilee without precedent in the industrial era. Shouldnt Bryan Adams be celebrating? And praising the designer, divine or human, of the animal rights virus? Did the loss of a few shows in a prestigious venue overwhelm his principles?

CUTS LIKE A KNIFE. A song by me. Tonight was supposed to be the beginning of a tenancy of gigs at the @royalalberthall, but thanks to some fucking bat eating, wet market animal selling, virus making greedy bastards, the whole world is now on hold, not to mention the thousands that have suffered or died from this virus. My message to them other than thanks a fucking lot is go vegan. To all the people missing out on our shows, I wish I could be there more than you know. Its been great hanging out in isolation with my children and family, but I miss my other family, my band, my crew and my fans. Take care of yourselves and hope we can get the show on the road again soon. Ill be performing a snippet from each album we were supposed to perform for the next few days. X #songsfromisolation #covid_19 #banwetmarkets #selfisolation #bryanadamscutslikeaknife #govegan

A post shared by Bryan Adams (@bryanadams) on May 11, 2020 at 8:45am PDT

His apology for the spittle-flecked gram only made things weirder. No excuse, wrote the crooner: I just wanted to have a rant about the horrible animal cruelty in these wet-markets being the possible source of the virus, and promote veganism. In other words: I said the words that ticked everybody off because I wanted to say them, and I wanted to say them for the reason I stated at the time, which still stands, and I am not offering any excuse.

You can see why I have to embed the term apology in scare quotes. Adams didnt amend or withdraw anything. He could easily have concluded the pseudo-apology with, so kiss my heinie, carnivores. Instead he tacked on a few words of solidarity with members of his own species (I have love for all people), once again suggesting that his -ism may be a tad shallow.

It might even just be though one hesitates to suggest such a thing a talented dimbulbs instinctive, half-assed absorption of a belief system that is trendy amongst his cultural and economic peers. We are left with the question whether Bryan Adams really needs to apologize to fellow vegans for disgracing himself in the name of veganism; or whether he needs to apologize to them for being an unprincipled vegan that favours humans; or whether no apology is needed and he is a decent representative of real vegan reasoning.

His underlying picture of the world one that would feature no epidemic disease if people didnt eat meat does represent a familiar tendency. Hardcore vegans will sometimes call meat-eaters carnists and suggest that carnism is socially constructed that everyone is actually born vegan. That there is a McDonalds every few city blocks only goes to show how much force must be applied, how grand and elaborate the conspiracy has to be, in order to trap mankind in the unnatural, unhealthy carnist state.

If you replace carnism in these sentences with capitalism, you can see where the verbal technique comes from and how it works. Man is born free and everywhere he is in chains, said Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Muslims, for that matter, are said to believe something of the sort that theirs is the faith people are genuinely born with, and that heresies and blasphemies are just socially constructed errors.

Unfortunately, if you like hamburgers, or the sight of thousands of humans dying makes you unhappy in a way that bacon in a supermarket doesnt, this tactic can only serve as a reductio ad absurdum useful mostly for making you step back from the vegan position and search its premises more aggressively for flaws. Unless youre Bryan Adams.

Is Testosterone Therapy Safe for Women? – HealthCentral.com

The hormone testosterone (called T for short in medical circles) has long been associated with the male physique, athleticism, and a heightened sex drive. But now, theres an idea making the internet search rounds that testosterone therapy may be the secret sauce to revamping a womans shuttered sex drive.

Even health-conscious celebrities have gotten in on the hype. In 2011, Jane Fonda told The Sunday Telegraph that she started taking the hormone in her 70s to boost her sex drive. But before you run to your doctor to ask for a prescription, you should know that testosterone therapy is a controversial approach that is not FDA-regulated for women at this time. Despite its mythical reputation, this hormone isnt a cure-all for sexual dysfunction, and it could even be dangerous for your health if not taken carefully. Let us explain.

Testosterone may be known as a male hormone, but womens bodies naturally produce it, too. Its one of many hormones that work together to control our mood, metabolism, sexual desire, bone and muscle growth, and reproductive system. As you age, your hormone levels change, with one of the biggest shifts occurring during menopause when your menstrual cycle stops for good. Menopause causes your estrogen and progesterone levels to decrease, but interestingly, it is not associated with a sudden decrease in testosterone, according to the North American Menopause Society.

That said, there is evidence that testosterone decreases throughout your life. Testosterone drops with age more than with menopause, says Margaret Wierman, M.D., professor at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO and former Vice President of Clinical Sciences at the Endocrine Society. This may explain why testosterone pills, gels, and patches are sometimes touted by drug marketing campaigns (and celebs) as a sex drive booster for older men and women whose testosterone is naturally lower than it used to be.

The problem with this approach, according to Chrisandra Shufelt, M.D., associate director of the Barbra Streisand Womens Heart Center at the Cedars-Sinai Smidt Heart Institute in Los Angeles, CA, is that testosterone is not necessarily the miracle drug you may be reading about on the internet. If you search online, it seems like testosterone could be the panacea of all hormones, relieving everything from fatigue to weight gain to depression, Dr. Shufelt says. But interestingly, she notes, there is no scientifically proven list of symptoms directly correlated to low T in women. Everyones hormone levels are naturally different, and what looks low on a testosterone test for one woman may be a perfectly normal T level for another.

To some extent, yesbut its not the end all, be all. Dr. Wierman explains that there are many different causes of sexual dysfunction (the term for when youre no longer craving or enjoying sex). There are mechanical hardware causes, there are relationship causes, there are mood causes, she says. There are rarely hormonal causes, and [in those cases] it's usually estrogen deficiency that is causing abnormalities.

Testosterone products are supplemental versions of the hormone that people take to increase their existing T levels. They come as a patch, gel, pill, tablet, or injection. Prescription testosterone products are FDA-approved for men whose bodies cannot produce adequate testosterone, due to genetic conditions like Klinefelter syndrome or damage from infection or chemotherapy. Testosterone products are notwe repeat, not!approved for people whose testosterone is decreasing with age.

Nevertheless, this hasnt stopped people from taking T (and doctors from prescribing T) for reasons other than it is officially intended. This practice has become so widespread, in fact, that the FDA issued a safety announcement in March 2015 urging doctors not to prescribe testosterone to anyone other than men with testosterone-lowering medical conditions. The statement noted that testosterone therapy could possibly increase your risk of cardiovascular problems or stroke.

For women, the risks of testosterone therapy are even less clear. What we know about safety and what has been studied in women is the short-term effects, up to two years, Dr. Shufelt says. Longer effects are not known, and we do not know the effects in women who have risk factors for heart disease and breast cancer. She stresses that longer-term studies will be necessary to determine whether low-dose testosterone therapy has detrimental effects on a womans body.

When testosterone is taken in excess quantities, Dr. Shufelt explains, it can lead to some pretty severe medical issues for women. Too much testosterone in women can result in deepening of voice, hair loss, acne, anger, and negative changes to the cholesterol panel, she says. Dr. Wierman remembers seeing a perimenopausal patient who had been given testosterone pellets at an anti-aging clinic. The high levels of T caused an increase in bad cholesterol, increase in blood pressure, excessive body hair growth, and loss of scalp hair.

In September 2019, the Endocrine Society, International Menopause Society, European Menopause and Andropause Society, and others got together to publish a global consensus statement on the safety and efficacy of testosterone therapy for women. Dr. Wierman, one of the principal authors, explains the major takeaway: testosterone therapy has only proven to be useful for one specific subset of womenpost-menopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder.

Hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) is characterized by an absence of sexual desire, to an extent that it causes emotional distress and relationship problems for a couple. HSDD can be caused by a variety of factors, from medication use and chronic health conditions, to chemical imbalances and hormone deficiencies. It is diagnosed by a healthcare provider using a questionnaire and treated with anything from counseling to hormone replacement therapy, depending on the situation.

Dr. Wierman says that for post-menopausal women with HSDD, controlled studies showed that getting high physiologic doses [of testosterone] increased satisfying sexual relations by one per month, with some other potentially good effects on sexual function, such as arousal and ability to orgasm. The consensus statement specified that these doses should mimic not exceed natural levels of testosterone in premenopausal women. The statement authors urged that more research be done on testosterone therapy for women, and that testosterone products for HSDD should be created specifically with women in mind.

If youre curious about testosterone therapy and wondering if you fit into the subset of women who may benefit, Dr. Wierman suggests talking to your regular womens healthcare provider. I think that most providers, whether theyre gynecologists or endocrinologists or primary care doctors who specialize in menopausal women, can discuss the issues related to testosterone pros and cons, she says.

But before you walk away with a prescription, keep in mind that your low sex drive may not have to do with your hormones. The first thing when someone has abnormalities in their sexual function is to discuss all the different other causes of it, and try to be a detective, Dr. Wierman says. If she is having painful intercourse, maybe it's local vaginal estrogen she needs. If theres stress in the relationship, maybe therapy is what they need. Testosterone therapy is one option to increase libido, but its certainly not a foolproof key to amazing sex. And unless youre a postmenopausal woman with HSDD, you probably want to steer clear.

Nanomedicine and drug delivery systems: The cutting edge of modern healthcare – Advanced Science News

Nanomedicine and drug delivery systems are at the forefront of modern healthcare. These systems offer a new platform for drug delivery that can greatly increase the targeting and effectiveness of therapy.

Over the last twenty years, great strides have been made in cancer nanomedicine and tissue repair using targeted drug delivery systems. In this field, the goal is to take advantage of the unique properties of a material on the nanoscale to minimize toxicity in healthy organs by specifically targeting cancerous cells. Our research group has sought to develop safer and more efficacious therapies in order to advance patient care and clinical outcomes.

Concerning nanomedicine, the focus of our research has been to improve the treatment of different types of cancer, among them lymphoma and glioma. We have developed polymeric and lipid nanoparticles loaded with different antitumor agents, such as edelfosine, which presents the singular characteristic of not targeting the cells DNA but the cell membrane and the apoptotic machinery of the cancer cell. These nanosystems were able to cross the blood-brain barrier, and furthermore, in the case of lymphoma models, they were found to successfully inhibit not only the primary tumor, but also its spread to other parts of the body when administered orally.

More recently, our attention has been centered on the use of nanotechnology for the treatment of pediatric cancers, particularly osteosarcoma, which is the most frequently observed primary malignant bone tumor in the pediatric population. We have shown that our nanomedicines decreased the toxicity of the entrapped edelfosine, and that this treatment slowed the progression of the primary tumor growth in orthotopic osteosarocoma animal models, successfully preventing the metastatic spread of the osteosarcoma cells from the primary tumor to the lungs these findings were significant as it is assumed that 80% of patients with osteosarcoma present non-detectable micrometastases at diagnosis. The nanomedicines we have developed, and more specifically lipid based nanosystems entrapping edelfosine, could provide a more effective and safer alternative to conventional treatments for different types of cancers.

Regenerative medicine has also been of great interest to us. It is an interdisciplinary field that promotes regeneration of tissue or organs damaged by disease, which contrasts with traditional strategies that focus primarily on treating symptoms. In this sense, our focus has been the development of novel drug delivery systems to provide better treatment for brain and cardiac diseases. A large number of the projects carried out by our group have been done in collaboration with clinicians, pharmaceutical scientists, material engineers, and veterinarians, leading to novel delivery systems in key areas of unmet medical needs such as Parkinsons disease and myocardial infarction.

Specifically, our biomaterials can solve one of the greatest issues associated with biotherapeutic formulation and delivery, which is their fast degradation. In order to overcome this challenge, we have designed various microparticle-based technologies which we are able to protect biomolecules from degradation in biological environments. Our technique avoids shear stress and preserves the proteins from degradation during the manufacture process.

We have demonstrated that the injection of microparticles loaded with glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) one of the most promising candidates for the treatment of Parkinsons disease within the brain of animals with severe nigrostriatal degeneration achieved long-term improvement in motor function, which was associated with the restoration of the dopaminergic function.

Similar to the positive results observed in the treatment of Parkinsons disease, we also observed improved cardiac recovery after myocardial infarction after treatment with neuregulin or fibroblast growth factor loaded microparticles. Interestingly, these microparticles modulated the inflammatory process towards a reparative response. However, we are only starting to obtain a glimpse into the crucial role of the inflammatory response for tissue repair. More studies addressing the contribution of different macrophage subsets to the reparative process are mandatory to fully understand the therapeutic potential of modulating the inflammatory response, as therapeutic treatment not only for myocardial infarction, but also for several other diseases, including cancer.

Beyond assessing the efficacy of microencapsulated biotherapeutics, microparticle optimization has also been a regular topic of discussion in the research group. The hydrophilic polymer coating, poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG), is well-known to increase the half-life of biotherapeutics and to reduce particle clearance in the blood, but the same strategy has not proven effective in reducing particle elimination in the heart. PEG decreases particle clearance in the blood by blocking opsonins, macromolecules that bind particles and mark them to be eliminated by phagocytes. However, in the cardiac tissue, particle clearance may not be dependent on opsonins which would explain why PEG failed to improve microparticle bioavailability in the heart.

Mirco- and nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems combined with cell therapy can achieve a more complete and potent regenerative response. Indeed, biomimetic biomaterials with tunable properties can be tailored to influence the fate of transplanted cells and to improve current cell delivery strategies. Within this framework, the use of microparticles as delivery vehicles for stem cells and human cardiomyocytes has proven to maximize the efficacy of cell therapy by dramatically enhancing cell survival in the heart. Cutting-edge areas such as non-invasive intravenous delivery of cardioprotective nanomedicines or extracellular vesicle-based therapies are also currently being explored.

Despite increased efforts made to improve current strategies in the above mentioned diseases, there are still aspects that limit the transfer of drug delivery systems to clinical practice, including the standardization of criteria and validated methods to characterize these novel systems of drug administration, large scale-manufacturing, the use of animal models that better simulate the pathophysiological aspects of the diseases and government regulations. An additional issue that could influence their clinical translation is the overall cost-effectiveness in comparison to current therapies.

In any case it is clear that the advances achieved in nanomedicine and drug delivery technologies offer huge potential for novel therapeutic approaches to unmet medical needs such as cancer, as well as cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.
