We Need To Change the Narrative Surrounding Vegetarianism – Study Breaks

Post Views: 694

In recent years, vegetarianism and veganism have become increasingly accepted as healthy alternatives to an omnivorous lifestyle. Scientific studies proclaiming the health benefits of a meatless lifestyle, as well as documentaries such as Food, Inc. that expose the moral problems of industrial meat production and consumption, have inspired many to adopt a vegetarian diet. Although, people are not only accepting plant-based diets anymore they are also evangelizing them.

I have been supportive of plant-based living for years: In middle school, I committed to eating only humanely raised meat before going fully vegetarian during high school. I was, and still am, especially influenced by the ethical ramifications of a meatless diet. American factory farming horrifies me: The enclosure of animals in small spaces without room to graze and frequent antibiotic and hormone injections that harm the health of animals are just two examples of inhumane industrial farming practices.

In addition, the environmental benefits of reducing meat consumption are enormous: Although carbon dioxide is by far the biggest culprit in global greenhouse gas emissions, methane a gas that cows produce is much more potent. Continuing factory farming at its current rate of production will only increase the amount of methane in the atmosphere.

We need to be doing what we can to phase out factory farming, to support the ethical treatment of animals and to improve the health of ourselves and our planet with plant-based food. My problem with the movement is the way this message is being conveyed.

The narrative surrounding vegetarianism, previously contained within personal conversations and doctor visits, is now publicly steeped in moral superiority. It says, If youre a good person, youll stop eating meat altogether. Dont get me wrong what we eat is political. Meat consumption has real environmental and ethical impacts beyond ourselves. In the era of COVID-19, in which the virus is severely affecting meat packing workers, shutting down industrial farming facilities and leading farmers to euthanize animals, it is clear that the American food systems current reliance on meat is damaging our communities.

Jonathan Safran Foer makes this argument in his recent New York Times op-ed, titled The End of Meat Is Here. On the whole, its a good article; I agree with his stance that the coronavirus has exposed the degree to which we seriously need to reduce our meat consumption. He advocates urgency and appeals to a world in which farmers were not myths, tortured bodies were not food and the planet was not the bill at the end of the meal. I think most of us want to live in that world. But his message that everyone needs to cut out meat completely is harmful.

First and foremost, your diet impacts your physical and mental well-being, and those who advocate a complete transition to a no-meat society do not do justice to this fact. Safran Foer addresses the health impacts of vegetarianism, writing, Dont we need animal protein? No. We can live longer, healthier lives without it. Most American adults eat roughly twice the recommended intake of protein including vegetarians, who consume 70 percent more than they need.

This is all true. What is also true and what Safran Foer fails to mention is that vegetarian diets, although beneficial for our hearts and kidneys, can lead to vitamin deficiencies that impact health. Nutrients only found in animal products, such as vitamin B-12 (cobalamin), are essential for maintaining good health. A study published in 2016 concluded that compared to non-vegetarians, vegetarians have reduced body mass index (BMI), serum cholesterol, serum glucose and blood pressure with a lower mortality rate due to ischemic heart disease. However, underestimating the correct supplementation of cobalamin (Cbl) can nullify these benefits.

In addition, vegetarianism can have a serious impact on mental health. A study published in April 2020 observed a distinct correlation between meat abstention and poor psychological health, declaring that Our study does not support meat avoidance as a strategy to benefit psychological health. And even with this new research, studies on vegetarianism and physical health still outnumber those on psychological health by a wide margin.

Claiming that vegetarianism is for everyone ignores these facts and fails to recognize the role of diet in mental health treatment. It also perpetuates the one-size-fits-all approach to health, which neglects the impact of individual circumstances like stress level, socioeconomic status and past trauma on well-being. Ignoring these factors makes it difficult for individuals to identify and seek out treatments for chronic physical and mental health issues.

When I went vegetarian, I didnt know that my new diet could cause vitamin deficiencies. I felt the impact of these deficiencies my first year of college, when I was suddenly dealing with heightened anxiety that manifested itself not only through worried thoughts, but also through other physical symptoms. I went down a frustrating path of doctor visits and medical tests in search of treatments for my new chronic health issues, and had to transition out of a vegetarian diet to start remedying the imbalance I felt in my mind and body. Now, about to enter my senior year of college, Im still dealing with these symptoms and grappling with how to eat ethically while consuming meat.

I do not share my story to scare people away from vegetarianism; rather, I want to help others reduce their meat consumption while avoiding an experience like mine. No one can responsibly recommend a vegetarian diet to others without also informing them of the potential risks.

There are ways that we can eat less meat, even forgo meat completely, while being tuned into individual health concerns. If you do want to go vegetarian, make sure you do your research on what vitamins you may have a harder time getting from your diet once you abstain from meat. Find out how you can get these nutrients in other foods, and take supplements where diet alone falls short. Adolescents and those with preexisting conditions need to be especially careful about making sure what they eat is supporting their specific needs.

That being said, transitioning to a vegetarian diet isnt for everyone, and for those who cannot fathom giving up meat, there are still ways to eat more sustainably. The Reducetarian Foundation has plenty of resources for those who want to improve the health of humans, animals and the environment without ditching meat completely. Even just skipping meat one day a week can have a beneficial impact; according to the Natural Resources Defense Council Health Campaigns Director Sujatha Bergen, the environmental impact of the average American reducing their meat intake by one hamburger per week would be equivalent to eliminating a years worth of tailpipe emissions from ten million cars.

In addition, try to buy humanely raised meat whenever you can, looking out for labels that designate animals as hormone-free, free-range, and grass-fed. These labels themselves can be misleading, so check out resources such as American Grass-Fed that have lists of certified providers of grass-fed beef in each state. And when in doubt, buy from local farms.

We need to educate ourselves about the ways that we can eat more ethically, and eating less meat is one of the best ways to do that. However, we also need to encourage plant-based eating in a way that allows individuals to best take care of themselves and their families. Physical and mental health are inseparable, and we cannot detach vegetarianism from personal well-being.

So, just as we should eat responsibly, we should also advocate responsibly. Health is personal, and when it comes to diet recommendations, no one should take the moral high ground.

Heres why Im slowly switching to vegetarianism Helen Martin – Edinburgh News

Seven per cent of the UK population are vegetarians and Helen is tempted to join their ranks

THIS year, since March, must have been the worst time across Scotland and other countries with the virus, presenting a fleet of fears, risks, fatalities, tragedies, depression, dreams and ambitions shattered, income losses and anxious wondering about the future.

Theres been little to cheer us up. One suspected cause of coronavirus, the disgusting wet markets of China, started up another booming thread of bad news on TV and social media relating to animal cruelty. Why would we want to learn about all that right now?

One of the most upsetting for many was the coverage of the Chinese Yulin Dog Meat Festival, including pictures of cats and dogs, starving, yelling, injured and packed tightly with hundreds crammed into metal cages, before being roasted alive.

Then came the worst revelations of trophy hunting, with young children being taught to shoot arrows at bear cubs or young deer fawns, and adults happily promoting their killing of giraffes, lions and rhinos, etc.

How working animals, from monkeys and elephants to donkeys and dogs, were tortured by their captors or owners was bad enough and perhaps another, ghastly, closer-to-home, expos was how some animals were produced and dealt with, even in the UK, for food.

A lot of that on social media has been posted by vegans. My first reaction was that it was all so horrific and tearful I wanted to block them. But no, I signed all the petitions, retweeted the things while trying as much as possible to avoid the pictures.

My Irish family were farmers. I knew they werent as cruel as the stuff I was seeing now. I worked with them! So, not surprisingly, eating meat had been normal and delicious for me for 60 years! Id often rejected the idea of veganism. But for some reason during this Covid-19 lockdown, Ive slowly begun to switch to vegetarianism.

I do mean slowly. About four meals a week contain no meat. Ive discovered vegan cheese for some recipes but still use some made from milk. I still use dairy milk for some things but tried the options such as almond and coconut, and finally settled on oat milk.

Non-meat soya mince is so good for chilli or curry, it tastes as good as beef. Im about to experiment with jackfruit, a real fruit that takes on a meaty texture and taste in spicy dishes. Pasta with veg ingredients is easy. And my animal-loving husband is going along with it all.

When restaurants open, well try vegetarian and vegan joints and learn more. Some people do a sudden switch to veggie or vegan but will we ever totally rule out animal contents? Could I reject haggis, steak and bacon forever? To be honest, I dont know.

Id certainly want intensive, factory farming banned, and compassionate, ethical farming to take over whether I really changed diet or not. Im sure many meat eaters would prefer that too, no matter how more expensive it was.

According to Finder UK, currently seven per cent of the population are vegetarian, four per cent are pescatarian and two per cent are vegan, all of which amount to 6.7 million. And by the end of 2020, all these statistics are predicted to double (although not everyone completely sticks to their new diet).

But heres the moral and emotional, insoluble problem. The spend on meaty dog and cat-food in the UK is estimated annually at up to 4 billion. (For my dog and cat I spend about 40 a week.) Add zoos, sanctuaries and shelters and the meat which is always necessary especially for those who love and feed animals.

Ponce De Leon Health Announces Results Of Pilot Research Suggesting That Biological Age Can Be Reduced In Humans – PRNewswire

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla., June 29, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --Ponce De Leon Health, Inc. ("Ponce de Leon"), a longevity company focused on reversing epigenetic aging, today announced the results of pilot research suggesting that Rejuvant LifeTabs, reduced the biological age of customers by an average of 8.5 years. The biological age was assessed by way of a DNA biomarker test that measures DNA methylation. Of the subjects in the analysis, two-thirds showed a statistically significant reduction in biological age. The analysis was based on data from subjects who had taken Rejuvant LifeTabs for a period of four to six months. Rejuvant, a dietary supplement, is Ponce de Leon's first commercial product.

The data were independently compiled by Dr. Yelena Budovskaya, Ph.D., co-founder and lead scientist of TruMe Labs, a pioneer in the emerging field of epigenetic aging testing. Ponce de Leon is a distributor of TruMe's TruAge Index, a take-at-home, non-invasive epigenetic age test. The subjects included in the analysis represent all 17 customers who had taken a TruAge test at the time of their first purchase of Rejuvant, as well as a second test after taking the supplement for four to six months. The TruAge Index measures DNA methylation, which is growing in acceptance by longevity researchers as an important biomarker of biological aging.

All formulations of LifeTabs contain the proprietary active ingredient LifeAKG,which was shown in recent pre-clinical animal studies to increase lifespan (the length of life) and healthspan (the length of healthy life) in mammalian models. Ponce de Leon has eight patents pending for inventions arising from its research and development activities.

Ponce De Leon is currently enrolling participants for a larger, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, to be conducted at Indiana University Medical Center later this year.

The Company's Chief Medical Officer, Francis R. Palmer, M.D., stated that "although at this stage we only have consumer data, these findings are very promising. We are only aware of one other published trial where researchers were able to show a reduction in biological age in humans as measured by DNA methylation. In this other trial, modest reductions in biological age were observed in a small number of subjects who were treated with a combination of prescription drugs for a year. The Rejuvant results are suggestive at this time but it showed a greater average reduction in biological age, achieved in six months, using non-prescription compounds." Added Palmer, "we expect our human clinical trial results to corroborate the encouraging data we have now, and we believe this will have a meaningful impact on both the scientific and consumer communities."

The Company's CEO and Founder, Tom Weldon, commented "the pilot research data appears to be consistent with our earlier mammal results but we appreciate the need for a more robust study to validate this data on lifespan and healthspan research. We look forward to conducting that study later this year and adding to these positive findings. The potential for Rejuvant to reverse epigenetic aging, as measured by DNA methylation testing and other measurable biological markers, may profoundly benefit not only the individuals who take the product, but also the economies and societies in which they participate and live."

Dermal Fillers Market is Projected to Expand at a CAGR of 8.6% from 2018 to 2026 - 3rd Watch News

What’s the secret to a long, happy life? Forget kale and kettlebells – all you need is kindness – Independent.ie

The received wisdom on how to live a longer, healthier life involves eating organic, counting steps, popping vitamins. Which is all well and good, but according to a new book, Growing Young: How Friendship, Optimism And Kindness Can Help You Live To 100, it misses a vital aspect of our health - being positively connected to each other.

ritten by Canadian-Polish science journalist Marta Zaraska, the book presents a ton of scientific evidence which links longevity and good health with meaningful human interaction. She wrote it because she believes that "in the deluge of reductionist wellness news we've somehow lost the big picture, ignoring the things that matter the most for our longevity: relationships, emotions and the psyche."

Obviously, diet and exercise impact hugely on our health - that goes without saying - but so too do relationships, friendships, altruism, activism, and mindfulness. Zaraska illustrates, with ample scientific back-up, how improving close relationships lowers mortality risk by 45pc, working on empathy and kindness lowers it by 44pc, and volunteering and practising mindfulness each by 22pc - while exercise reduces it by 23pc.

Eating red meat increases risk of mortality by 29pc, while loneliness increases it by 26pc - which suggests going plant-based and working on your friendships will make you almost immortal. Pessimism, unhappiness and neuroticism each increase mortality risk by 14pc, whereas having a purpose in life, being agreeable, and feeling you have people you can count on reduces it by 17pc, 20pc, and 35pc respectively.

This is not to suggest that just because you're happily partnered and help out at the local animal shelter you should stop exercising or swap your five-a-day for deep fried Mars bars. It's about both. Nor is it about curing disease with positive thinking: "You can't rid yourself of cancer simply by repeating happy phrases in front of the mirror." No, this is about prevention, but instead of it being me-centred, it's we-centred.

"When you think about fad diets, miracle foods, supplements, exercise gadgets - there is tons of stuff to be purchased there," she says. "Someone is always trying to sell you something. But when it comes to 'soft' drivers of health like friendship, optimism or kindness, there is nothing to buy. No money to be made for anyone. And also the fact that we got so caught up in consumerism, into working long hours so that we can buy more and more stuff, bigger houses, fancier cars, bigger TVs and more clothes, certainly leaves less and less time to just be there for others, to sit down and think - how can I make the world a better place, how can I contribute to my community?

"Popping vitamin pills or chasing the best of organic baby arugula is very individualistic, very 'I' oriented. The only person you are thinking about is you. Whereas the mindful approach to health requires us to step back and think about the big picture, the world as a whole and your place in it.

"And even if still that first impulse here may be egoistic - you are motivated, after all, by your own health and longevity - I believe that for most people, taking a deeper look at how they spend their time and participate in the society can help them change for the better.

"And as a result we can all not only live healthier and longer, but also live in a better, nicer place, on a planet that maybe is not so ravaged by climate change and racism because we care more about each other and about our community.

"Several Japanese researchers with whom I've talked believe that one reason for their country's exceptional longevity is their collectivism, which makes people think more about others, belong to local associations, and participate in communal life."

On a practical level, Zaraska's findings come as a refreshing contrast to the relentless orthorexia of the wellness industry. Ditch goji berries and other miracle foods, ("There are no miracles"), and have a chat with your neighbour instead. "Skip fitness trackers, engage in some community gardening," she says. "If you are a bit overweight, stop obsessing: being social and mindful likely matters much more for your longevity."

Focus not (just) on kale and kettlebells, but on your immediate relationships, romantic and platonic. Avoid the Four Horsemen of relationship apocalypse - contempt, criticism, stonewalling and defensiveness. Instead, "Read books and articles on how to be a better partner and talk often about good things that happen in your daily life," says Zaraska. And when you're with your loved ones, no phubbing (snubbing them by being on your phone): "Put your phone away and cut down on social media."

Singing in a choir, disco dancing, and sports like group rowing, spinning or running are examples of synchrony, which in turn increases empathy as you synchronise with those around you. "Singing and dancing release social neurohormones such as endorphins and oxytocin," says Zaraska. As does laughing.

Avoid Botox, she says, as it freezes facial expression, which makes people harder to read. And empathy is all about mimicry, about being able to tune into another person's emotions and respond with facial feedback. Zaraska says this is harder to do if your facial muscles have been frozen. With empathy, she says "you can practise it the way you might practise tennis or yoga: the more you do it, the better you will become." Empathy leads to caring for others, and, Zaraska reminds us; "We evolved to care. Nature equipped us with systems that encourage giving. Benevolence is hardwired into the reward areas of our brainshelping others reduces stress, setting up a cascade of physiological changes that end up improving our health: reducing blood pressure, lowering inflammation, extending lives."

Empathy can not only make us live healthier and longer, but also help us be more tolerant, more open, and more caring for the world around us.

Even if your altruism is driven by selfishness - I will do a good deed for someone else because it benefits my own health - this is fine. Just do it anyway.

"It may not be very idealistic, but it sure works," says Zaraska. "Philanthropy is very contagious".

But what if you are a naturally curmudgeonly/ misanthropic/doomy, perhaps prone to neuroticism and not very conscientious? Personality impacts on longevity, which means 'don't worry be happy' is genuine medical advice. But what if you are not that type of person? Zaraska says you can cultivate personality traits that will impact positively on your health - "fake it to make it, set yourself small challenges of conscientiousness" (She means tidy your sock drawer, your desk top). Tackle neuroticism by sharing your problems with others, and - the real key to contentment - "try to find a deeper purpose."

This is, however, easier said than done, which is why she advocates some kind of mindfulness meditation: "Choose the mind-body technique you find most appealing, be it yoga, mindfulness, tai chi, and try to practice regularly and long-term; the more you stick with it, the more benefits you will get."

Especially if you are trying to implement slow but sure change across other areas of your life - less arguing with your partner, more community oriented activity, less stress, more disco dancing - having a meditative practise will enhance everything else. It really is magic. As is optimism, even when the world around us is going through all kinds of convulsions.

"I'm always hopeful - remember, optimism makes us live longer!" says Zaraska. "Maybe sometimes we humans need a bit of a catastrophe to push us in the right direction, refocus us on what really matters. I also believe the big thing here is empathy - and it's something we can train the way we train our abdominal muscles. Empathy can not only make us live healthier and longer, but also help us be more tolerant, more open, and more caring for the world around us." In addition to the advice offered by US academic Michael Pollan, "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants", Zaraska adds her own: "Be social, care for others, enjoy life."

It's priceless, and it's free.

Five organizations in southern Ariz. continuing to pursue bold environmental projects amid the pandemic – Arizona Daily Wildcat

Recently, environmental organizations have had to slow down much of their efforts to promote the safety of staff and an awareness of other pressing societal issues. Some believe that this is even resulting in opportunities for the government to sneak in and break apart environmental regulations, without the defense systems of environmental organizations.

The New York Times recently reported the Trump administration is in the process of rolling back on 34 environmental provisions, such as the National Environmental Policy Act and multiple Obama-era rules.

With COVID-19 and also the protests, people arent necessarily as focused on environmental issues that are happening right now, explained Harold Thomas, the associate director of the Watershed Management Group in Tucson. So, it's an easy time for government to roll back a lot of legislation.

Still, environmental initiatives held by a diverse range of organizations in southern Arizona are proving resilience during these difficult times. Five companies, Patagonia Area Resource Alliance, Sky Island Alliance, the Sonoran Institute, Zero-Mass Water and Local First AZ are showing that environmentalists can feel some optimism despite the whirlwinds hitting American society and the environment.

In Patagonia, the environmental watchdog organization Patagonia Area Resource Alliance has a history of keeping an eye on industrial mining in the area. For years, PARA has taken steps to hold industrial mining companies to the highest environmental standards, and this has not halted in times of the pandemic.

During the pandemic, PARA staff are continuing to monitor mining activities in a variety of ways, according to Anna Sofia, the communications and outreach coordinator. Since 2012, PARA has been tracking animals in the Patagonia Mountains with cameras to see what effects industrial mining is having on the wildlife and ecosystems. Sofia and another staff member have been continuously going out into the mountains to check these cameras.

Carolyn Shafer, PARAs mission coordinator, explained the importance of wildlife protection and monitoring in the area. She said that poor industrial mining practices could be very harmful to the wildlife and that it is a human responsibility to ensure protection.

An important thing that we need to do as humans is to assure the longevity of all species, said Shafer. The Patagonia Mountains are part of a region that has been identified by scientists as one of the top areas in the world, most in need of protection and study for species survival.

Similar to PARAs own wildlife tracking project in the Patagonia Mountains, the organization is also partnering with the Sky Island Alliance and the Mexican organization Naturalia Sonora to track wildlife along the border of Mexico. This project is meant to study the biodiversity in the region of border-wall expansion.

The organization has also been monitoring effects on the regions waterways. For example, they recently found what seems to be a leaking mine site left from historical industrial mining. Sofia describes that they have found acid mine-drainage that is flowing across a road in a canyon in the area. PARA is trying to monitor what impacts this may have on the water and reporting on it to the U.S. Forest Service.

We are actively out in nature keeping an eye on things, which has been really good, and we have still been able to do that throughout the pandemic, Sofia said.

In light of pandemic safety precautions, Sofia said that PARA is also hoping to create a multi-platform online educational program to engage the public on the risks and realities of industrialized mining. They are looking to fund much of this program with a recent grant received from Western Mining Action Network.

PARAs primary focus acting as a watchdog against poor industrial mining practices may be more important now than ever. Shafer explained that from the mid-1800s to around 1960, a total of 250,000 tons of ore was extracted from the Patagonia Mountains. Just one of the companies looking to mine now looks to remove about the same amount of ore from the mountains every 10 days.

Shafer and Sofia identified some of the major dangers that PARA looks to hold mining companies accountable for. One risk of poor mining practices is the fracturing and scarring of mountains, which would allow water from the Sonoita Creek Watershed to be diverted into those areas. Then, as the water picks up residue from mining and extracted metals, water sources important for humans and wildlife can become highly contaminated.

Additionally, Sofia noted that another worry is noise and light pollution from exploratory and underground drilling. These unnatural sounds and sights can negatively impact species in the area. For example, it can put burdens on threatened species of birds such as Mexican spotted owls and affect migration patterns, scattering populations and creating an inability to reproduce.

With everything going on in the world from environmental pressures like poor industrialized mining practices to the pandemic, Shafer stresses that PARA and the Patagonia community are staying resilient.

I have lived in this community for more than 20 years, and given the chaos of the times, there is no place nor any other group of people that I want to be with as we move through these multiple crises, Shafer said. This community has every skill set needed to co-create a thriving and resilient community and we are determined to do so.

The primary actor in the aforementioned Border Wildlife Study initiative that PARA is participating in was launched by Sky Island Alliance. Sky Island Alliance is a nonprofit in Tucson focused on protecting precious water resources, wildlife and creating awareness around the Sky Island natural region.

According to Emily Burns, the program director for Sky Island Alliance, the Border Wildlife Study was created in early March to document the wildlife community in the foothills of the Patagonia Mountains, the Huachuca Mountains and the San Rafael Valley. To do so, the organization and its project partners PARA and Naturalia Sonora have placed heat-activated and motion-activated cameras in the areas. Burns explained that these cameras are carefully arranged in a way that they can track both migrating species like black bears and mountain lions, and also the local diversity of animals.

The Sky Island Alliance formed this project in response to the Trump administrations border wall and its potential impacts on biodiversity. Burns explained that the federal government is furthering Trumps border wall project, and new waivers have been issued, allowing the construction to proceed without any environmental review.

We felt it was imperative to step in and collect information about what animals are actually here in the path of the coming border wall so that we can share that information with the public and go forward with eyes-wide-open about potential impacts to species that we care about, said Burns.

Though no border wall has been constructed yet in the region, Burns notes that past border wall studies have shown negative impacts on various species. She said that even flying species have been shown to be negatively affected, such as the once-endangered ferruginous pygmy owl.

Some of the negative effects described by Burns that could be the result of continued border wall construction include the division of natural habitats, an inability for migratory species to move and habitat fragmentation.

Burns said that in the short term, Sky Island Alliance hopes that this data can inspire people to stand up against border wall construction. In the long term, they hope that it will be baseline data that can help the public, voters and decision-makers be aware of the wildlife in the region.

Another Tucson-based organization that has been quite active in environmental initiatives and projects in the recent past is the Sonoran Institute. According to the institutes Senior Director of Programs, John Shepard, it is a community-based organization focused on connecting communities to the natural resources that nourish and sustain them.

Recently, the Sonoran Institute has been active in three major projects. These projects include the restoration of the Laguna Grande, upcoming Growing Water Smart workshops and the Living River Reports.

Since 2006, the institute has been partnering with U.S. and Mexican environmental organizations to restore Laguna Grande, a site on the Colorado River in Mexico. According to Shepard, it is the largest restoration site in the Colorado River delta.

The Sonoran Institute was inspired to restore the flow of water through the site, the natural habitat for riparian species and the groundwater for nearby impoverished areas. These are all factors that have been damaged by the Colorado River degradation.

Over many decades as Colorado River water has been dammed and diverted, the connection between the river and the sea was lost, and over 90% of the original delta was lost as well, Shepard said.

The second initiative, Growing Water Smart, is a training program for cities, towns and counties focusing on water efficiency as the Colorado River and Lake Mead lose the capacity to provide for people. Shepard said that the Sonoran Institute has trained around 30 communities so far. Much of this training is targeted toward community water leaders and public utilities.

It tries to get the people who are responsible for water supply, which tend to be your utilities, to talk and plan in coordination with people who are making decisions that will affect water demand in the future, Shepard said.

The third major project that is being pursued by the Sonoran Institute is the continued production of Living River Reports. These are annual reports documenting the condition of the Santa Cruz River.

For some time now, facilities have been restoring the flow of water in much of the Santa Cruz River by adding treated wastewater to it. The Sonoran Institutes reports aim to not only examine the health of the river as treated wastewater is deposited but also to make the case for improvements of treated wastewater quality.

Shepard said that over time, as these reports have been produced and treated wastewater quality has been upgraded, they have seen promising signs of improvement in river health. For example, they have recorded the return of the Gila topminnow, an endangered fish, to the Santa Cruz River.

Despite a series of changes that have had to be made, the Sonoran Institute and its initiatives have shown resilience during times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, Shepard urges people in the environmental field to maintain a sense of optimism during this time.

Zero Mass Water, a Scottsdale based company, has been advancing the usage of hydropanels to provide safe, clean drinking water for industrial, commercial, residential and community applications. They mention how access to safe water is a human right for every community throughout the world.

Hydropanels are machines that collect water vapor from surrounding air, and then condense the vapor by increasing the humidity once it reaches the hydropanel. Panels are then arranged in such a way that it allows vapor droplets to collect and provide water. This water is then purified, ozonated and mineralized. This essentially makes the production of water an infinite and renewable source.

Zero Mass Waters initiatives look to provide the world with clean drinking water through a renewable energy source thus the Zero Mass title.

These hydropanels built by Zero Mass Water help provide water to areas across Arizona, even when various environmental challenges plague the community.

CEO of Zero Mass Water, Cody Friesen, stated that access to safe drinking water is a fundamental human right that is often too expensive, too wasteful, too extractive, and too scarce. Their hydropanels have helped to slow this problem by providing clean water to areas of Arizona that needed them the most.

With major burgeoning environmental challenges hurting Arizona such as excessive heat and water shortages, implementing a plan to obtain drinking water is important. According to the Fourth National Climate Assessment, water resources in the Southwest have already declined because of the growing population, deteriorating infrastructure and groundwater depletion, as well as human-induced climate change. Zero Mass Water is working to combat these challenges in an eco-friendly and cost-effective way.

Zero Mass Water looks to help communities not only in Arizona but across the world. With the climate changing the environmental frontier, it is uncertain to say what will happen to the main water sources that feed into major cities and rural areas.

This will be a risk for many due to the lack of availability of freshwater. Already, the United Nations indicated that 2 billion people live in countries experiencing high water stress. In response to these growing concerns, Zero Mass Water has implemented hydropanels in more than 40 other countries.

The pandemic has not slowed the companys bold efforts. Recent funding and expansion efforts with help from several organizations like BlackRock, Duke Energy and Breakthrough Energy, have allowed Zero Mass Water to further its hydropanel endeavors. According to Business Wire, they recently raised $50 million.

Phoenix-based organization focused on uplifting and empowering local businesses Local First AZ has partnered with the Tucson 2030 District, to launch a significant initiative for Tucson businesses. On May 20, Local First AZ helped to launch the Southern Arizona Green Businesses Alliance.

In recent years, Local First AZ has taken big steps to try and foster sustainable transformation in the southern Arizona economy. In 2018, the organization helped to launch Scale Up, a program for businesses to enrich sustainable actions through green workshops, networking and projects. In 2019, the organization launched the Arizona Green Business Program, a certification process aimed toward reducing environmental footprints.

Now, the introduction of the green alliance is a further step for Local First AZ. This alliance allows businesses to engage in three parts. The first part is the Green Business Leaders Program. This entry-level program provides a checklist for sustainable practices that will end with a follow-up consultation, recognition for sustainable leadership and more benefits such as marketing.

The next part is Scale Up, adopted from the original program started in 2018. This is an intermediate level program with more interactive learning opportunities.

The last part is the involvement in the Tucson 2030 District. Tucsons district is part of a collaborative effort among national districts to reduce water and energy consumption and emissions from transportation by 50% as soon as 2030.

According to Claire Kaufman, the sustainability program manager for Local First AZ, the program has been adjusted in many ways to adapt organizations to current circumstances.

COVID hit and we did a lot of adjustment on the programs to focus them even more on resiliency, so how businesses can be prepared in cases of disaster, Kaufman said.

Kaufman also described that adjustments have been made to the programs to integrate a more holistic education, including lessons on equity, social justice and environmental justice.

Its about making an economy that is environmentally resilient, economically resilient and socially resilient, Kaufman said.

A wide range of environmentally-concerned organizations are continuing to take strides toward improving the health of ecosystems, important natural resources and communities during the times of the pandemic.

The Patagonia Area Resource Alliance, the Sky Island Alliance, the Sonoran Institute, Zero Mass Water and Local First AZ are only five of the many organizations fighting against the odds to ensure environmental resilience despite everything that is happening.

For example, Watershed Management Group launched an initiative called Steward in Place, with the goal of connecting people to projects they can do from home that can help with an array of Tucsons environmental concerns.

According to Shepard, this resilience is at the core of environmentalism.

To be an environmentalist means youre an optimist."

Asia’s First-ever Continuous Galvanized Rebar Manufacturing Facility Launched by Madhav KRG Group in Association With International Zinc Association,…

The first-of-its-kind facility, situated near Gobindgarh in Punjab, will produce a new product, Continuously Galvanized Rebar (CGR). CGRs are value added rebars for higher life and low maintenance of infrastructure to provide significant cost savings compared to other corrosion resistant rebar systems. It offers on-site formability of the finished product, superior corrosion resistance in concrete at a price cheaper than other corrosion resistant rebar (Epoxy Coating & CRS rebar).

With an annual capacity of over 30,000 tonnes, the plant will manufacture ZNCOAT TEMPCORE TMT BARS under the brand name - JYOTI - a name that is now synonymous with excellence in steel manufacturing. This will be the first brand in Asia to apply CGR technology that will not only be superior but will also enhance life span of the rebars thereby reducing the overall maintenance cost.

YouTube Link - https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1_2TDrP7F7Bq0hwagE3qLCW1mXR0sXc-S?usp=sharing

Commenting about the new facility, Mr. Sudhir Goyal - Managing Director, Madhav KRG Group said, "Unlike painting and epoxy which are solely barrier-type coatings, CGRs are known to provide superior corrosion protection - both barrier and sacrificial - that further enhances the lifecycle of the underlying steel. I would like to thank the entire team of International Zinc Association and Hindustan Zinc Limited for their support in helping us bring this technology to India that will further help minimize the damage cause by corrosion and put India on the global map for its sustainable usage of zinc."

Addressing the audience, the steel minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan assured the industry of full support from the government and deliberated on how zinc will play an important role towards building infrastructure for the nation. "As India is on its way to large-scale infrastructure expansions, use of galvanized rebar in construction is set to rise. India has a coastal line that extends over. 8000 kms. Coastal areas are prone to corrosion because of salty atmosphere leading to frequent maintenance requirement thereby adding to loss of material and impact on the productivity. Galvanizing ensures that the zinc coating is of a standard quality and offers resistance to erosion so that there is no risk of cracking due to bending. Galvanized steel and rebars are environment friendly and cost effective and possess properties that enhances life of any structure with minimum maintenance. The commissioning of the new CGR facility will further increase the usage of zinc in steel industry and will support the much awaited need of supplying galvanized rebar in the construction industry. I would like to congratulate the entire team International Zinc Association and Madhav KRG Group for their efforts in setting up the first-ever Continuous Galvanized Rebar (CGR) facility in Asia that will not only boost to domestic steel market but will also put India on the global map, aligning it to GoI's efforts in making India self-reliant or Aatmanirbhar Bharat."

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sunil Duggal - Group Chief Executive Officer-Vedanta Limited, & CEO-Hindustan Zinc said, "Infrastructure, especially around the coastal areas face maximum risk of corrosion owing to humidity and constantly changing climate. A long-term answer to this far-reaching problem is use of zinc protected steel during the structure's initial construction stages, i.e. Galvanized rebar that not only ensures longevity of the structures but is also significant initiative towards safety. It's time to mandate use of galvanized coated rebar's in all infrastructure projects.

"In the last ten years, Indian zinc demand grew at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4-5%. However, usage of galvanized rebars and especially CGRs has been limited despite the fact that it bonds in par with concrete than uncoated rebar, thereby doubling the life of big concrete structures. As the government of India looks to strengthen Indian infrastructure, it calls for the need to adopt durable and proven corrosion protection methods, like structure galvanization. With continuous support from players like Madhav KGR and Hindustan Zinc Limited, we are confident of the shift to better national practices to help support India's efforts towards sustainable evolution." said Dr. Andrew Green, Executive Director, International Zinc Association (IZA) addressing the audience.

Galvanizing has been used for more than 100 years to protect structures exposed to different environmental conditions from corrosion.Realizing the importance of this technique, Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi had outlined a plan to spend about $1.5 trillion earlier this year, to upgrade and build infrastructure over the next five years to shore up economic growth, boosting the outlook for zinc, use of galvanized steel to prevent corrosion.

Over 1000 delegates (India and International) including ministry officials, opinion leaders, zinc producers, galvanizers, end users of galvanized products, industry executives from Railways, highway authorities, NHSRPL and design consultants attended the launch event.

AMPED UP: Veganism a healthy eating option – 13WMAZ.com

It's time to get Amped Up, and we're talking healthy ways of eating. We're exploring veganism with Letoiya Jones.

MACON, Ga. I want people to know that vegan food is not just rabbit food or just salads, says self-proclaimed vegan Letoiya Jones.

Jones has been a practicing vegan for the past four years. She decided to try the lifestyle after having issues digesting food including meat and fish, and she says the changes shes made in the kitchen have paid off and the transition was pretty easy.

Jones says, I had mentally been preparing myself for months, so once I decided to do it, I was OK, and when I did it four years ago, there werent as many substitutions like they have now. I still eat vegan junk, but mainly, I eat fruits and vegetables.

Processed vegan foods like Oreo cookies are Jones' favorite, but as a true vegan, that means she doesnt eat any animal flesh or byproducts like milk, cheese, or eggs, so shes decided to take things into her own hands -- literally, creating delicious and nutritious meals via her business, Southern Garden Kitchen.

Im excited about continuing to cook and continuing to change the stigma of veganism that everything is so restricted, explains Jones. I like to think of it as, 'Think of what you can eat and not what you cant eat,' and its a lifestyle and not a diet. It's truly a lifestyle, so I look forward to changing peoples minds.

Jones says her new way of eating gives her more energy and has helped her lose more than 100 pounds along her journey. If youre interested in giving veganism a try,hop on over to Facebook and check out Southern Garden Kitchen with Letoiya Jones to get you started.

Vegan Jamaican-Inspired Cooking Show Now on Amazon Prime – LIVEKINDLY

Amazon Prime has a new vegan Jamaican-inspired cooking show.

Kirly-Sues Global Kitchen debuted earlier this month in the US and the UK. It is hosted by vegan YouTuber and cookbook author Sussane Kirlew, who goes by the name Kirly-Sue.

The three-part series aims to show viewers how easy it is to cook vegan meals. It follows Kirlew, who also serves as the shows executive producer, on her travels to Jamaica to see how food is grown and cooked locally. She then makes her own vegan version of the dish in her UK kitchen and allows non-vegans to try it.

Kirlew told LIVEKINDLY incorporating Jamaica into the show was important to her.

My country of origin is Jamaica, my parents are from Jamaica. So I thought to actually film therebecause I have family there and I have contacts thereis not going to be too difficult, she said.I also obviously wanted to film here in the UK where I live. We often think if you want to learn something you have to go to somebody in a Western country. And we have everything here. And to some extent, that is true. But what Im showing in the show is we can learn something from non-western countries, she added.

Kirlew says she went vegetarian at the age of 18 and then vegan in 2012. She now spends her time trying to encourage others to incorporate plant-based foods into their diets, especially younger generations.

In addition to her newly-released vegan cookbook for kids, called Cooking With Kids, Kirlew hosts a weekly Instagram Live in which she does a cook-along with kids. So I have kids who join me for half an hour to do a really good plant-based meal every week. And its been going really well, she said.

A lot of the time people are not aware of all the information surrounding veganism. And I think its important for us to teach the next generation what options there are for them, she explained.

She added: Because this generation of adults didnt have that opportunity in terms of information and choice with regards to a plant-based diet. But I think the children of this generation today, there is an opportunity to show them look, you can actually cook plant-based.

Kirlew says that with good reviews and ratings, she hopes the show may potentially move to Netflix.

Slutty Vegan owner dishes on Rap Snacks potato chip, weather-proofing business during pandemic – 11Alive.com WXIA

So, what makes it a plant-based potato chip? Pinky Coleman revealed that many potato chips contain dairy and milk derivatives.

ATLANTA Pinky Coleman, the owner of Atlantas popular vegan eatery Slutty Vegan ATL, is taking her career to new heights by creating the first plant-based potato chip with Rap Snacks, a food brand inspired by hip hop culture.

Since December 2019, the chips have made its way into 100,000 locations across the U.S, according to rep for Rap Snacks.

Both brand names, founded by African-American entrepreneurs, are enthusiastic about the success of this vegan potato chip line as it aims to spread awareness around healthier lifestyle choices to a community who may experience less access to vegan options otherwise.

It's unheard of to put two Black-owned businesses together in this way so that we could grow and be successful together, Coleman said. It just feels good to be able to represent that through my restaurant to my brand voice. I'm just happy about the sales and the support.

In an interview with 11Alive, Coleman said the collaboration is a dream come true as she was already a fan of the Rap Snacks brand and creating her own spin on barbecue-flavored chips was the perfect pairing for Slutty Vegans popular burgers.

It's a total blessing to be able to see my face, on chips in different stores. I always said when I was a little girl, that I'm gonna be a household name, and I didn't know that it would take on this meaning, Coleman said. But I'm excited and I'm humbled about it. And I'm just grateful for the people who support me every single day, especially in the city of Atlanta.

Rap Snacks CEO and founder James Lindsey is equally as excited to join forces with Coleman.

Slutty Vegan has been immensely influential in introducing veganism to the culturally rich community of Atlanta and beyond. Its always exciting to join forces with a brand that shares the same underlying mission as we do here at Rap Snacks - to push culture forward through food. This partnership will create limitless possibilities across both the Rap Snacks and Slutty Vegan brands; more importantly, providing communities across the country who have limited access to vegan options, a health-conscious, alternative snack, Lindsay tells 11Alive in a statement.

So, what makes it a plant-based potato chip? Coleman revealed that many potato chips contain dairy and milk derivatives.

This doesn't have any animal or animal byproducts in the chip, and I wanted to spread that narrative, especially in our communities that you can be vegan. You can be plant-based, and you don't have to compromise animals, even if it starts at potato chips. even if this starts and vegan comfort food, Coleman said.

Slutty Vegan ATL has become a celeb-magnet, as many actors, musicians, and athletes have praised the restaurants healthy spin on fast food.

I think Slutty Vegan does a great job introducing that lifestyle to communities around the world. Because its just not Atlanta. We got people coming from Kenya, London, and we do that. And now we get to really do that with the Rap Snacks vegan chips, Coleman said.

At the start of the stay-at-home orders during the pandemic, Coleman closed her business for two weeks to create a safe operating environment for employees and customers.

it's unfortunate how many people we have lost toCOVID-19. What I will say is, it showed me that Slutty Vegan can be a weatherproof business, as an entrepreneur, it's never easy to make like quick, vast decisions, especially when you have a business, Coleman said. Thinking about what the new normal is going to be is never easy for any entrepreneur. But we're doing it with style and grace.

Coleman, has come a long way since starting her business in a ghost kitchen. The business owner anticipates her rapidly moving company will have a total of 13 locations within the next two years.

We are expanding our operational executives and just really bringing in people who have expertise to help us grow and scale this company. It's not about the money for me, It's about creating something so that we could tell a story on how we have helped people to re-imagine food. And we do that every single day, Coleman said.
