Will These Penny Stocks Bring Fireworks After The 4th? – Penny Stocks

3 Penny Stocks Powering Into The Weekend

With the long holiday weekend, penny stocks are sure to be on the list of things to look for. The fact is that weve seen a huge uptick in retail trading of small- and micro-cap stocks recently. So it seems fitting to look for a few of these stocks under $5 while theres plenty of down-time to research.

Overall, the stock market has been extremely volatile. No matter what you think of geopolitics, the price of gold, or the recent stimulus money, this market is trying to aggressively recover. Hopes are high that the economy can continue reopening. However, theres no denying the coronavirus has wreaked havoc on a clear action plan.

Some states and cities are slowly reopening in phases while others are walking back due to new cases. Hospitals in at least two Texas counties are at full capacity heading into the holiday weekend. Reports cite that county judges are urging residents to shelter in place.

Meanwhile, new curfew orders are back in force in cities like Miami as well. For some people, theyre listening to mixed messages from Washington and theyre deciding they dont need to wear a mask, Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber told Fox News Neil Cavuto in an interview on Cavuto Live, Saturday.

What will this mean for markets on Monday? As weve all come to know and love, the trends tend to go by the day. So, depending on how investors digest the information over the weekend, that will likely dictate the opening scene next week. Regardless of coronavirus, weve seen many penny stocks to buy and sell heading into the weekend. Many of these hadnt seen trading momentum like this in months.

But again, weve got a whole new group of retail traders driving markets right now. Theyre more focused on trading volume than on the companies themselves. We saw this, first hand, with companies like Hertz and JC Penney, both of which filed for bankruptcy earlier this year. Yet their share prices soared for a brief moment as gun-slinging traders bought into hype-fueled action. With this in mind, its important to have a plan of action going into your trades next week and in the future.

Blinding going in on a trade just because YOLO isnt the best way to become consistently profitable. Understand the risks involved, set your sites on profit targets, and keep in mind whats driving momentum. Whether its news or plain market hype, youll be well-equipt to make money with penny stocks when you know why theyre moving the way they have.

Lipocine Inc. (LPCN Stock Report) has been in recovery mode this year. If you remember back in February when we started following LPCN stock more closely, the company was still licking its wounds from a huge miss from its TLANDO treatment. The oral testosterone product candidate for testosterone replacement therapy didnt meet 3 endpoints in its study. That was when LPCN stock dropped from over $2.80 to under $0.40.

[Read More] 4 Biotech Penny Stocks To Watch After Key Updates This Week

Fast-forward to the second quarter and the company has been working on advancing its pipeline further. In May Lipocine received RDA clearance for an investigational new drug application for a Phase 2 study of LPCN 1148. This is a prodrug of bioidentical testosterone to treat liver cirrhosis. Furthermore, the company reported results of a preclinical study of its LPCN 1144 which demonstrated encouraging results according to the company. H.C. Wainwright took notice of these milestones and increased its price target on LPCN stock to $3 while maintaining a Buy rating.

But since then, there hasnt been much from the company as far as news is concerned. The last filing that was made in June was an 8-K showing results from its shareholder meeting. Also, if you take a close look youll see that theres been some insider buying going on in June. A number ofFORM 4s filed, show that directors were buying stock last month. On July 2, LPCN stock began trading higher late in the afternoon without any apparent catalyst. However, shares have steadily climbed since late February. Since the 24th, LPCN is up over 160%.

Its exciting when you get to see a company evolve from very little into something much greater. In my opinion, we have been following Waitr Holdings (WTRH Stock Report) since its early day. What was more of a skeptical play on Uber Eats or Postmates has actually evolved into a story that investors have gotten behind. Thats especially true as stay at home orders boosted attention on food delivery companies.

Last November was when we really began digging into the driving force behind Waitr Holdings. Shares had just reached 52-week lows and there were more questions than answers as to the future prospects of the company. However, as fait would have it, management sunk its teeth into the company identified that it was lax in its efforts and focused on building the business moving forward.

Specifically, Adam Price, CEO at the time said, Moving forward, you should expect to see steady improvements in cash flow compared to the past several quarters. You should also expect to see a refocus on existing markets where there is a strong user base, great brand awareness and still a lot of growth potential.

As many have seen WTRH stock has been steadily on the move ever since. Most recently, Waitr announced that it would be expanding its Louisiana footprint. The company hired a total of 225 customer service and dispatch team members in the state since January. Furthermore, after Carl Grimstad took over at Waitr in January 2020, the company has implemented strategic initiatives around service and profitability. These initiatives along with others have led to improved revenue and Waitrs first ever profitable month in February of this year.

Cinedigm Corp (CIDM Stock Report) has also benefited from mandates during coronavirus quarantine. June was a big month for CIDM stock and to be honest, the big move we discussed on June 3, could have easily been a case of the 1-day penny stock breakouts. But that move continued even higher the next day. At the time we started following the stock, CIDM shares traded around $0.75. It had already enjoyed a jump in May and like most illiquid stocks (at the time) expectations werent extremely high for a continuation. But as we know, Genius Brands breakout this year had traders looking for sympathy plays & Cinedigm may have initially been one of them.

Cinedigm acquired all North American distribution rights to Cotton Films EVERYDAY MIRACLES in late-May. Following this, the company announced a strategic partnership with SpringServe, the leading ad serving platform for over-the-top and connected TV. It also expanded its distribution of The Bob Ross Channel on Roku (ROKU Stock Repor). What added more fuel to the fire a partnership with Vewd. According to Cinedigm, Vewd is the worlds largest Smart TV over-the-top provider and will now offer Cinedigms portfolio of entertainment networks. But following these big updates, CIDM stock has been free-falling a bit. After reaching $6, shares pulled back as low as $1.67 last week.

[Read More] Is The US Government Investing In Penny Stocks? $700M Could Say Yes

Before the holiday weekend went underway, however, CIDM stock started rebounding late Thursday afternoon. This came after the company announced its next earnings date. Cinedigm reports Q2 figures on July 6th. So if this is one of the names on your list of penny stocks right now, keep this in mind. Speculative momentum can be a factor going into earnings. But the devils in the details. A positive result may bode well for the market but as weve seen, lackluster earnings can put a damper on short-lived bullishness.

Debating Diets: What is the vegan diet? – Baylor College of Medicine News

Thinking about starting a new diet? While the amount of information available can be overwhelming, its possible to find a diet that is safe, suitable and effective for your lifestyle.

Dr. Yana Finkelshteyn, assistant professor with Family and Community Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, discusses what you need to know about the MIND diet.

A: The vegan diet is a diet that excludes food that comes from animal sources including meat, dairy, seafood and eggs. Veganism is often a lifestyle choice based on ethical and political principles of animal rights and environmental preservation. Others come toveganism due to the health benefits of the diet.

A: Strictvegans will avoid all foods containing meat, dairy or egg derivatives. There are raw vegans that eatprimarily raw unprocessed vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts. Many vegans prefer organic to conventionally raised vegetables and fruits, and some vegans do not consume honey.

A: Whole grains, starchy vegetables, legumes, greens, fruits, berries, seeds, nuts, plant oils, nut butters, tofu, tempeh and many other plant-derived foods are included in the vegan diet.

A: There is a benefit for weight management for those following a whole-foods plant-based vegan diet. There are many processed foods that are vegan, but these are calorie-dense and high in added sugar or fat. If these are kept to a minimum, the vegan diet isbeneficial for weight loss. A vegan diet reduces the risk of heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes and some cancers as compared to an omnivore diet.

A: One is that foods must becombined in a very specific way to get a complete protein. The truth is that most people eating a variety of natural plant foods will get more than the adequate amount of protein. A second misconception is that it is automatically a healthy diet. As mentioned, processed vegan, while possibly less harmful than processed meats, are not necessarily healthy. There are also vegan foods high in added salt and sugar. When it comes to any diet, natural may be best.

A: Anyone can follow a vegan diet with some caveats. Most strict vegans do need to supplement vitamin B12 which isfoundprimarily in animal derived foods and soil bacteria.

The vegan diet does contain iron-rich foods such as whole grains, beans, greens andavocados. Pairing these with foods naturally high in vitamin C aids iron absorption, and cast-iron cookware can add elemental iron. A junk food vegan diet may result in deficiencies in iron and even protein.

The vegan diet is also relatively low in Omega 3 essential fatty acids. To increase these levels, vegans can includeseaweed and algae, flax seeds, chia seeds, walnuts, edamame and other plant-derived foods containing Omega 3 fatty acids in their diet.

A: There are many vegan athletes and even vegan bodybuilders. Because the vegan diet is naturally high in low-calorie density foods, it may be harder to gain weight on a vegan diet for those that need to gain weight, such as those with a severe illness or who recently had surgery. Pregnant women can continue a vegan diet throughout pregnancy while supplementing with prenatal vitamins and possibly iron as long asthey include a wide variety of natural foods in their diet.

A: Many that are switching to a vegan diet report weight loss and increased energy. Blood pressure and cholesterol can decrease considerably. High fiber intake can ease gastrointestinal issues such as constipation. However, some report increased gas and bloating, particularly if increasing intake of legumes and certain vegetables.

To be done in a healthy way, the vegan diet must include a variety of plant-derived foods. For many, there is a learning curve in terms of food preparation and even shopping. It can take extra time and research to prepare vegan recipes and this can be a barrier to some in adhering to the diet.

The vegan diet can be economical. Rice, beans, lentils and greens are inexpensive staples in a vegan diet. Because there is little vegan fast food, it does often require more cooking at home.

One More Key to Human Longevity Found After Worm Research – International Business Times, Singapore Edition

It is known that the mitochondria is called the powerhouse of the cell, without which there will be no energy production in the cell, thereby the body too! Along with this mitochondria has its role in other important functions, one crucial role being in aging.

Research has shown that age-related diseases are linked to mitochondrial functioning. Further, it is known that "mild inhibition of mitochondrial respiration" promotes longevity in many species, which means to mildly slow down mitochondria's energy-making process. Thus, the life-span extension compensates for the reduced mitochondrial respiration.

An enzyme called AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) that promotes mitochondrial health is also known as anti-aging protein. The same enzyme plays a crucial role in life-span extension by reducing mitochondrial respiration.

Research on roundworms has shown that an enzyme called VRK-1 can extend their lifespan. VRK-1 does this by increasing the level of AMPK resulting in an increase in its activity, promoting longevity through phosphorylation.

This VRK-1 is also a gene that gives instructions in making a protein called VRK (vaccinia-related kinase), which is active in cells throughout the body. It plays a critical role in cell growth and division. It also influences proteins that control gene activity attaching itself to the DNA.

This is an important finding in the research of extending human lifespan too.

Korean scientists published a paper this Wednesday in Science Advances, that showed how the lifespan of worms was extended by varying VRK-1 levels.

Roundworms normally have a lifespan of about two to three weeks. But the genetically engineered worms in the experiment, having elevated levels of VRK-1 lived about 23.7 days on average - they lived longer. When they inhibited the function of VRK-1 in other worms, they found that their lives were shortened.

Lab-controlled worms that lived 20.3 days on average, lived only 12.7 days as VRK-1 was inhibited. That is, the worms died sooner.

A senior author of the paper, Seung-Jae Lee, professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology told Inverse that the key to activating longevity was in the anti-aging protein, AMPK, while the key to activating AMPK is VRK-1. The VRK-1 enzyme is found in worms and has its cousin in human cells, that's very similar to it.

"Therefore, it is possible that this mechanism can be applied to promoting human longevity in the future," he added.

Similar patterns were shown in cultured human cells in the experiment, Lee said, showing that the process holds even in complex organisms.

Replicating the study in animals, like mice will show it's likeliness in humans. However, scientists still don't know how exactly the process occurs.

Peonage Explained: The system of convict labor was Slavery by another name – Milwaukee Independent

The Obama administration pursued a plan to reform it. An entire news organization, The Marshall Project, was launched in late 2014 to cover it. Organizations like Black Lives Matter and The Sentencing Project are dedicated to unmaking a system that unjustly targets people of color.

But how did we get this system in the first place? Our ongoing historical research project investigates the relationship between the press and convict labor. While that story is still unfolding, we have learned what few Americans, especially white Americans, know: the dark history that produced our current criminal justice system.

If anything is to change if we are ever to end this racial nightmare, and achieve our country, as James Baldwin put it we must confront this system and the blighted history that created it.

During Reconstruction, the 12 years following the end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, former slaves made meaningful political, social and economic gains. Black men voted and even held public office across the South. Biracial experiments in governance flowered. Black literacy surged, surpassing those of whites in some cities. Black schools, churches and social institutions thrived.

As the prominent historian Eric Foner writes in his masterwork on Reconstruction, Black participation in Southern public life after 1867 was the most radical development of the Reconstruction years, a massive experiment in interracial democracy without precedent in the history of this or any other country that abolished slavery in the nineteenth century.

But this moment was short-lived. As W.E.B. Du Bois wrote, the slave went free; stood a brief moment in the sun; then moved back again toward slavery.

History is made by human actors and the choices they make.

According to Douglas Blackmon, author of Slavery by Another Name, the choices made by Southern white supremacists after abolition, and the rest of the countrys accommodation, explain more about the current state of American life, black and white, than the antebellum slavery that preceded.

Designed to reverse black advances, Redemption was an organized effort by white merchants, planters, businessmen and politicians that followed Reconstruction. Redeemers employed vicious racial violence and state legislation as tools to prevent black citizenship and equality promised under the 14th and 15th amendments.

By the early 1900s, nearly every southern state had barred black citizens not only from voting but also from serving in public office, on juries and in the administration of the justice system.

The Souths new racial caste system was not merely political and social. It was thoroughly economic. Slavery had made the Souths agriculture-based economy the most powerful force in the global cotton market, but the Civil War devastated this economy. How to build a new one?

Ironically, white leaders found a solution in the 13th Amendment, which ended slavery in the United States in 1865. By exploiting the provision allowing slavery and involuntary servitude to continue as a punishment for crime, they took advantage of a penal system predating the Civil War and used even during Reconstruction.

A new form of control

With the help of profiteering industrialists they found yet a new way to build wealth on the bound labor of black Americans: the convict lease system. Heres how it worked. Black men and sometimes women and children were arrested and convicted for crimes enumerated in the Black Codes, state laws criminalizing petty offenses and aimed at keeping freed people tied to their former owners plantations and farms. The most sinister crime was vagrancy the crime of being unemployed which brought a large fine that few blacks could afford to pay.

Black convicts were leased to private companies, typically industries profiteering from the regions untapped natural resources. As many as 200,000 black Americans were forced into back-breaking labor in coal mines, turpentine factories and lumber camps. They lived in squalid conditions, chained, starved, beaten, flogged and sexually violated. They died by the thousands from injury, disease and torture.

For both the state and private corporations, the opportunities for profit were enormous. For the state, convict lease generated revenue and provided a powerful tool to subjugate African-Americans and intimidate them into behaving in accordance with the new social order. It also greatly reduced state expenses in housing and caring for convicts. For the corporations, convict lease provided droves of cheap, disposable laborers who could be worked to the extremes of human cruelty.

Every southern state leased convicts, and at least nine-tenths of all leased convicts were black. In reports of the period, the terms convicts and negroes are used interchangeably.

Of those black Americans caught in the convict lease system, a few were men like Henry Nisbet, who murdered nine other black men in Georgia. But the vast majority were like Green Cottenham, the central figure in Blackmons book, who was snatched into the system after being charged with vagrancy.

A principal difference between antebellum slavery and convict leasing was that, in the latter, the laborers were only the temporary property of their masters. On one hand, this meant that after their fines had been paid off, they would potentially be let free. On the other, it meant the companies leasing convicts often absolved themselves of concerns about workers longevity. Such convicts were viewed as disposable and frequently worked beyond human endurance.

The living conditions of leased convicts are documented in dozens of detailed, firsthand reports spanning decades and covering many states. In 1883, Blackmon writes, Alabama prison inspector Reginald Dawson described leased convicts in one mine being held on trivial charges, in desperate, miserable conditions, poorly fed, clothed, and unnecessarily chained and shackled. He described the appalling number of deaths and appalling numbers of maimed and disabled men held by various forced-labor entrepreneurs spanning the entire state.

Dawsons reports had no perceptible impact on Alabamas convict leasing system. The exploitation of black convict labor by the penal system and industrialists was central to southern politics and economics of the era. It was a carefully crafted answer to black progress during Reconstruction highly visible and widely known. The system benefited the national economy, too. The federal government passed up one opportunity after another to intervene.

Convict lease ended at different times across the early 20th century, only to be replaced in many states by another racialized and brutal method of convict labor: the chain gang. Convict labor, debt peonage, lynching and the white supremacist ideologies of Jim Crow that supported them all produced a bleak social landscape across the South for African-Americans.

Black Americans developed multiple resistance strategies and gained major victories through the civil rights movement, including Brown v. Board of Education, the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. Jim Crow fell, and America moved closer than ever to fulfilling its democratic promise of equality and opportunity for all.

But in the decades that followed, a tough on crime politics with racist undertones produced, among other things, harsh drug and mandatory minimum sentencing laws that were applied in racially disparate ways. The mass incarceration system exploded, with the rate of imprisonment quadrupling between the 1970s and today. Michelle Alexander famously calls it The New Jim Crow in her book of the same name.

Today, the U.S. has the highest incarceration rate of any country in the world, with 2.2 million behind bars, even though crime has decreased significantly since the early 1990s. And while black Americans make up only 13 percent of the U.S. population, they make up 37 percent of the incarcerated population. Forty percent of police killings of unarmed people are black men, who make up merely 6 percent of the population. It doesnt have to be this way. We can choose otherwise.

How Capitalism solved its instability problem by using racism as an essential tool for maintaining order – Milwaukee Independent

U.S. capitalism survived because it found a solution to the basic problem of its instability, its business cycles. Since capitalism never could end cyclical downturns and their awful effects, its survival required making those effects somehow socially tolerable. Systemic racism survived in the post-Civil War United States partly because it helped to achieve that tolerability. Capitalism provided conditions for the reproduction of systemic racism, and vice versa.

Every four to seven years, on average, capitalism produces a downturn (recession, depression, bust, crashmany words for a problem so regularly repeated). Political leaders, economists, and others have long searched for a cure for capitalisms instability. None was ever found. Capitalism has thus already recorded three crashes in this new century (spring of 2000, autumn of 2008, and now in 2020).

Defenders of capitalism prefer to call its inescapable instability the business cycle. That sounds less awful. Yet its cycles hard reality has always frightened capitalisms defenders. They recognize that when large numbers of people suddenly lose their jobs, many businesses die, production shrinks, and governments lose tax revenues, the results can and often do threaten the entire economic system. Capitalisms cyclical crises could potentially turn their victims against it and make them receptive to the systems critics.

This would more likely happen if everyone in the society were roughly equally vulnerable to cyclical downturns. Most employees would then rightly worry that their jobs would be lost in the next crash. They would periodically face income losses, interrupted educations, lost homes, and so on. Whatever relief employees felt if neighbors, rather than themselves, got fired, they would know that it might well be their turn in the next cycle. The losses, insecurities, and anxieties produced by such a capitalism would long ago have turned employees against it and provoked transition to a different system.

U.S. capitalism solved its instability problem by making cyclical downturns afflict chiefly a minority subpart of the whole working class. It positioned that minority to bear the brunt of each cycle and suffer its damages disproportionally. That minority was repeatedly drawn into and then thrown out of jobs as the cycle dictated. Any savings it might accumulate when working would be lost when unemployed. Repeated firings precluded such a minority from enjoying the benefits of job longevity (seniority, promotion, household stability, etc.). Poverty, disrupted households and families, unaffordable housing, education, and medical care would haunt such a minority. It would become capitalisms business cycle shock-absorberthe last hired, first firedacross the four-to-seven year average duration of its cycles.

For capitalism, making such a minority absorb most of the costs of capitalisms instability allowed the majority of the working class to be relatively exempted, relieved, freed from them. The majority could be less subject to cycles because the minority was made relatively much more subject. Capitalism promised the majority relatively secure jobs and incomes because it took those away from the minority. The majority could thus worry less about the next cycle, whereas the minority had to worry more and adjust their lives more. Racists could then attribute the resulting differences between minority and majority subparts of a population to inherent qualities of different races instead.

Other advanced capitalist countries found parallel solutions. Some condemned immigrants to play the role assigned to African Americans in the United States. Racism aimed at immigrants often followed. In cyclical upswings, immigrants would be brought in: North Africans into France, southern Italians into Switzerland, Turks into Germany, and so on. Then, cyclical downswings would return those immigrants to their home countries. Capitalisms would thus save on costs of unemployment insurance, welfare payments, etc., for the workers who had returned. While some capitalisms relied on domestic minorities to be shock-absorbers and others relied on immigrants, some countries relied on both. The United States used Central American immigrants alongside domestic African Americans, and it still does. Germany allowed some immigrants to settle and acquire German citizenship alongside Turkish and other immigrant guest workers.

In the United States, married white women also played the role of business cycle shock-absorber. During cyclical upswings, they would enter the paid labor force in part-time or full-time positions. Like African Americans, they earned less than white men. Womens jobs, too, were likely to be temporary, undone by cyclical downturns.

Whatever communities were forced into the shock-absorber role, poverty, depression, broken families, slums, and inadequate education and health facilities became more widespread among them than they were among the majority of the working class. Insecure jobs, incomes, homes, and lives often bred bitterness, envy, desperation, crime, and violence. These collateral damages had to be managed by the capitalisms whose survival depended on producing and reproducing those communities. Police and prisons were and are assigned that management task.

Police and prisons were to keep the lid on, tame, patrol and control the restive portions of the shock-absorber communities sequestered in slums or ghettos. Interactions with police coupled with cycling and recycling through prisons were the chosen means to manage capitalisms collateral damage. Those means generated collateral damage of their own: the long, tragic record of police violence, use of excessive force, the harshness and violence of incarceration, and the killing especially of African Americans.

Why were African Americans chosen to be key (but not the only) cyclical shock-absorbers in the United States? One factor concerned the racist legacies of U.S. slavery. They included beliefs that slaves were either not fully human or inferior humans. Even the U.S. Constitution had counted a slave as merely three-fifths of a full (i.e., white) person for census purposes. Accommodation to slavery before the U.S. Civil War had already shaped a racialized consciousness in both masters and slaves. And because U.S. slavery entailed different skin colors for masters and slaves (unlike many slaveries in world history), a readily identifiable minority had already been defined in racial terms in the slave portions of the United States. Moreover, that definition had spread to other parts of the United States as well. U.S. capitalism used, absorbed, and built on slaverys legacy by inserting large portions of the African American community into the shock-absorber role that the system required. The racism developed by U.S. slavery thereby both facilitated U.S. capitalism and was reinforced by it.

A significant portion of the white working class in all capitalisms has always also been forced into the shock-absorber role. White trash in U.S. capitalism was never far from the African Americans similarly situated. There thus arose possibilities of class solidarity between these Black and white working-class communities. U.S. history displays moments when those possibilities were realized, as C. Vann Woodward documented so well. It also displays moments of intense racist violence used to block the realization of those possibilities. Employers played on racialized differences to keep employees from unifying against them. In bitter competitions between Black and white shock-absorbers for cyclically scarce jobs, whites could and often did use racism to gain advantages in access to those jobs. In multiple ways, then, capitalism fostered and benefited from racism; it thus settled deeply into the system.

Fundamental injustice characterized the relationship between police and prisons, on the one hand, and the African American and other communities (Indigenous, people of color) condemned to play capitalisms shock-absorber role, on the other. The solution was and is not better training or more funding; both have been tried repeatedly and both have likewise failed repeatedly. A real solution would provide a decently paid job to everyone who wants one as a matter of right. Unemployment would then be outlawed much like slavery, child abuse, etc. Taxes levied on capitalist enterprises would provide the funds needed to find jobs, private or public, for those laid off by an employer (much as such taxes help fund unemployment insurance now). Those funds would include wages or salaries paid for each workers time between being laid off and rehired. Minimum wages, applied universally, would cover reasonable housing, transport, health care and other living costs.

If such a solution were deemed to be incompatible with capitalism as a system, capitalism would have to give way to a system that made adequately paid employment a basic right for all. Enterprise profit would then finally be ejected from its throne as capitalisms number one social priority.

Such a solution would finally free African Americans, Indigenous, and Brown people from long-standing abuses in and by police and prisons. It would thus reduce the racism that those institutions have exemplified and reinforced. It would also reduce pressures on police and prison personnel to behave in ways that self-destructively rob them of their humanity as well as oppress others. Police and prisons in the United States today serve an inherently unstable capitalism by means of systemic racism. The logic of alliance between anti-racism and anti-capitalism could not be clearer.

AffyImmune Therapeutics presents novel CAR T development programs at the annual meeting of the American Association of Cancer Research | DNA RNA and…

DetailsCategory: DNA RNA and CellsPublished on Friday, 03 July 2020 10:25Hits: 378

NATICK, MA, USA I July2, 2020 I AffyImmune Therapeutics, Inc. disclosed novel advancements in their proprietary affinity-tuned CAR T-cell programs and technology in three presentations at the recent Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). One presentation reported on a new CAR T design for localized and inducible cytokine release. The other two described their affinity-tuned CAR T cell design approach that maintains robust tumor cell killing while reducing toxicity. The company currently has an open IND for the treatment of relapsed or refractory thyroid cancer using an affinity-tuned CAR T-cell targeting the ICAM-1 protein, which is overexpressed in advanced thyroid cancer.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy has shown robust anti-cancer responses in hematologic malignancies, but applying this therapeutic approach to solid tumors has been hindered by multiple challenges, including impaired T cell infiltration of the immune-suppressive tumor environment and on-target/off-tumor cytotoxicity to normal tissues. To improve infiltration and mitigate toxicity, AffyImmune developed CARs with selective targeting and fine-tuned affinity.

Highly localized, inducible interleukin-12 release augments ICAM-1 CAR T cell activity against solid tumors

One presentation (abstract #4359) demonstrated that IL-12 secretion induced the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines IFN- and TNF- both in vitro and in vivo, suggesting a mechanism by which local release of inducible IL-12 can help overcome hostile tumor microenvironments and augment anti-tumor immune responses. The inducible IL-12 CAR T cells exhibited much more robust elimination of subcutaneous and peritoneal tumors compared to CAR T cells lacking inducible IL-12 expression.

Mitigating on-target off-tumor cytotoxicity of EpCAM CAR-T by affinity tuning

Two additional presentations focused on the multi-cancer biomarker epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM). EpCam is frequently over-expressed in a wide variety of carcinomas, including colon, gastric, pancreas, and breast cancers. This makes EpCAM attractive for targeted therapeutics, but recent clinical trials of EpCAM-targeting therapeutics have shown significant dose-limiting toxicities resulting in limited clinical responses. To selectively target EpCAM high tumors, AffyImmune is developing affinity tuned EpCAM CAR T cells.

In one EpCAM presentation (abstract #4534), author Huan Yang of AffyImmune described the development of AffyImmune's EpCAM targeting technology, which involved a rational design approach incorporating lower-affinity single-chain antibody (scFv) variants. While high-affinity EpCAM-targeting CAR T-cells kill both normal human epithelial cells as well as EpCAM-high tumor cells, AffyImmune's lower affinity CAR T-cells were shown to spare normal human epithelial cells while still effectively killing tumor cells expressing high levels of EpCAM. Further, transcriptional profiling suggested that lower affinity CAR T variants were less prone to exhaustion.

Eradication of EpCAM expressing solid tumors by low-affinity CAR T cells

In the final, complimentary presentation (abstract #4534), it was shown that potent in vivo anti-tumor activity could be obtained using lower affinity CAR T cells in an intraperitoneal gastric cancer model, an orthotopic pancreatic tumor model, and in a PDX model using a gastric cancer patient-derived xenograft. The authors concluded that the technology enabled "eradication of various difficult-to-treat solid tumors, without triggering severe treatment-related toxicities," showing promise for the fine-tuning approach as a general strategy for identifying a therapeutic window for CAR-T cells in challenging, solid tumor types.

"Together, these presentations demonstrate the elegance and effectiveness of AffyImmune's strategy," said AffyImmune co-founder Moonsoo Jin. "We're focused on identifying the optimal affinity for targeting tumor-associated antigens using CAR T-cells. In this way, it is possible to both avoid non-tumor cells expressing basal levels of the target and to optimize CAR T-cell function, longevity, and tumor killing."

All presentations were presented at the AACR Virtual Annual Meeting II between June 22-24, 2020, and are available for on-demand viewing.

About AffyImmune Therapeutics, Inc.

AffyImmune is realizing the potential of cancer immunotherapy by extending the anti-cancer activity of CAR-T cell therapy to solid tumors, improving the safety and efficacy of CAR-T treatment. Based on Professor Moonsoo Jin's work at Weill Cornell Medicine, AffyImmune's proprietary technology allows fine-tuning of CAR-T cells affinity to selectively kill tumor cells, reducing toxicity. AffyImmune scientists have also developed a tracking system, that can be engineered into any CAR-T cell, to allow for real-time localization of cells after administration to patients.

AffyImmune's lead asset, AIC100, is an affinity-tuned, 3rd generation CAR-T cell therapy co-expressing SSTR2. Preclinical studies in various solid tumor models demonstrated AIC100's robust and enduring tumor eradication and superior safety profile compared to standard, high-affinity CAR T cell therapy. In 2019, AffyImmune received Orphan Drug Designation by the FDA for AIC100 and began recruitment for a Phase 1 trial to treat advanced thyroid cancer.

Founded in 2016, AffyImmune is headquartered in Natick, MA, and is incubated by ORI Capital.

5 celebrities who went vegan, and how they get their nutrients on a plant-based diet – Insider – INSIDER

Veganism is a dairy-free, meat-free diet and lifestyle fast growing in popularity in the US.

That includes a growing number of celebrities, including Mike Tyson, Billie Eilish, and Peter Dinklage, whether it's for health reasons, sustainability, or animal rights.

It can be a tricky diet to follow. It's one thing to cut out meat, milk, and eggs, but then there are animal-based products like chicken stock or certain oils and candy. Cakes and pastries are usually cooked with dairy, as is restaurant-cooked fish, basted in butter. Vegans typically struggle to keep up their B12 levels without proper nutritional guidance.

All in all, there's a lot of forward-planning involved for people who aren't accustomed to a vegan lifestyle.

But many vegan celebrities are sharing how they fill up on nutrients. Here is a list of five vegan celebrities and how they do it:

Have you ever wondered why healthy food is less available in communities of color? And not only that but why BIPOC are more susceptible to disease? These directly-related hard truths are built on an unjust food system that is exposed in the new documentary Theyre Trying to Kill Us.

John Lewis is a Black vegan filmmaker and Ferguson native who has witnessed and experienced this issue first-hand. Lewis shared, Even though Ive been involved in athletics and sports since I was a little kid, I did reach a state of childhood obesity where I was 315 pounds as a freshman in high school. Many years later, I found out that it was not only the lack of activity that led to my obesity, but it was the foods I was eating at the time. I started my vegan journey once my mother was diagnosed with colon cancer. After I did some research, I saw that animal protein wasnt just a cause of cancers but it was also the cause of many diseases within the human body and thats what led me down my journey to becoming a filmmaker in pointing out what Ive learned along the way to help out more people.

For this documentary, Lewis teamed up with Keegan Kuhn, the co-director of Cowspiracy and What the Health. Lewis told us they met a few years back at a festival. I had a booth for my protein shake, Vegan Smart, and he had a booth for his documentary at the time, Cowspiracy. When I walked over to the booth, he actually knew who I was and it just became a good friendship from there. Years later, Kuhn reached out to Lewis about working together on a documentary. Kuhn expressed a desire to reach more people with this documentary but didnt know how to do so.

Thats when Lewis suggested the idea of using hip-hop. Hip-hop really runs the world and if we can appeal to the people who love it, he shared, then they would be more willing to listen to the message. Theyre Trying to Kill Us will feature interviews with numerous hip-hop artists, public figures, and doctors as they discuss veganism, health, poverty, systemic racism, and more. Ne-Yo, Raury, TxTHEWAY, Lola Monroe, King Los, Dame Dash, Grey, Angela Yee, Dr. Neal Barnard, and John Salley are some of the guests who make an appearance.

When we asked Lewis what message he hopes to get across with Theyre Trying to Kill Us, he told us, This documentary is solution-based. The main purpose of this is to actually show people that they have a way out if they use a plan of action. I want people to see that there is a way out from the dark and dismal portrayal of health that has been shown to us in the past.

Theyre Trying to Kill Us is set to be released by the end of the year. They have not yet announced what platforms it will be available on. For the most recent updates, follow @theyretryingtokillusfilm on Instagram.

Veganism, environment and agriculture: Engagement online is ‘explosive’ – Agriland

Whether you perceive it is as informative or just noisy, there is absolutely no avoiding the seismic food debate online.

This is because the level of engagement with issues to do with veganism, the environment and agriculture, particularly on social media, is explosive, according to Pdraig Wims, associate professor in the School of Agriculture and Food Science at University College Dublin (UCD).

Social media is where young people are increasingly getting their information and, often, where their views of lifestyle and diet are influenced.

A big concern of Prof. Wims for young people is that he feels they are not accessing quality information and are also not doing in-depth research into topics. Adding to this, he said the extent that people are influenced online is truly difficult to say.

He described the trends in how young people consume information about food, agriculture and the environment as rather worrying.

Im reluctant to refer to any of it online as debating thats because there often isnt any debate on these very complex topics. A debate is fine on any topic, where there is balance and more than one view.

However, it is clear online that veganism gets very positive coverage; coverage that goes unquestioned the majority of the time.

He feels that with the discourse online surrounding food and animals, there just needs to be a balance of views and a co-existence of different beliefs, which often is not the case.

There can definitely seem like there is a shaming of agriculture online. Its easy to shame something when you only have to say it online and dont have to talk to an actual person.

For young people who are seeing influencers every day pushing a certain view, it doesnt help that there is a generational aspect in that many of these young people havent been exposed to a rural or farming background and, therefore, they dont really understand it.

He feels that the conversations to do with veganism and agriculture are difficult and even more so when they are carried out on sites like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

A lot of information is being pushed on young people on social media and that is difficult for them to navigate.

Eating healthy with Yanaya – The Herald

The Herald

Tafadzwa Zimoyo Senior Lifestyle Writer

Early this week, Government announced that restaurants could now safely resume with limited operations, allowing them to serve sitting customers.

This is an exciting development, especially for many outgoing young people, the single in particular who are lazy to cook after a long hard day at work.

To them, eating out is one way of escaping the cooking and dish-washing routine.

Yet, when some people choose to eat out, they go for fast foods (junk foods) which are unhealthy and may result in non-communicable lifestyle diseases such as cancer, blood pressure, strokes and diabetes among others.

Many choose to ignore the fact that eating a balanced diet is fundamental to good health and well-being.

According to a 2017 report by Malabo Montpellier Panel, a group of international agriculture experts, Africa as a continent now has the fastest growing middle class in the world with current trajectories showing they will grow to 1,1 billion by 2060.

The agriculture experts point out that over the last few years, big fast food brands like Nandos, Burger King, McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Subway all set shop on the continent with the hope of taking advantage of the expanding middle class, who have disposable income and a palate for processed food.

Given that, an obesity epidemic is now unravelling in countries like Zimbabwe, Egypt, Ghana, South Africa, and Nigeria.

In the report, the Malabo Montpellier Panel further says: Surprisingly malnutrition and obesity also co-exist in the same households sometimes, with stunted children living alongside overweight adults, who themselves manifest multiple micro-nutrient deficiencies.

Yet, eating healthy has many benefits especially this time when the world is fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.

Covid-19 has also changed the eating habits of many Zimbabweans.

In an effort to ensure those who prefer eating out maintain a balanced diet, 28 yearold Nyaradzo Dhliwayo, an acclaimed restaurateur has created a company dubbed Yanaya a healthy lifestyle food bar situated at Joina City in Harares central business district.

But how did she come up with such an idea when some women her age are busy with fast life such as chasing trendiest fashion, hairstyles even busy with TikTok (a popular social media application that has made youths go wild)?

Who is she and why did she choose that profession?

The Herald on Saturday Lifestyle, traced the bubbly young entrepreneur and caught up with her at the prestigious food bar Yanaya.

Upon entering, organic fresh designs leave customers thinking the restaurant is an exotic garden. Inside, one can easily buy everything the fresh aroma of ingredients and fruits which she uses to prepare is tempting.

Dhliwayo said her creative work and photography has caught the attention of local and international exhibitions.

Oh well, she is a professional photographer who holds an honours degree in design and photography from Stellenbosch University in South Africa.

I have been a vegan for almost two years and vegetarian for three years. I struggled whenever I went out because there were no places that offered good vegetarian meals. I realised getting healthy, nutritious natural tasting food was a struggle not only for myself but many people in Zimbabwe, she says.

That alone inspired her to create space for people who are health conscious to enjoy a meal out.

I have also been to the gym of late and we are given the eating plans. Some did not know where to start from, so it was an opportunity for me to penetrate the market, she explained.

Her goal was simple to redefine what it means to eat well and promote a healthier happy lifestyle.

Ingredients she uses for her meals are 100 percent local produce.

I am passionate about feeding people with nourishing meals made from whole ingredients that have a positive impact on their overall mind, body and health. I am a firm believer in supporting local producers and improving value chains, she added.

According to Dhliwayo, the biggest hurdle for Zimbabwean farmers pertains to post harvest losses, and as such a lot of perishable agricultural produce goes to waste.

This is because our farmers do not have many ready off takers like us who are willing to apply fair conditions when transacting with farmers. We make gourmet sandwiches, burgers, salads, detox smoothies, wraps and juices among others, explained Dhliwayo.

And because of the lockdown, Dhliwayos Yanaya has been delivering orders to those who cannot access the facilities.

An application where customers can buy online and the food is delivered at their doorstep is also available with the creation of a website in progress.

With a menu that is highly nutritional as well as detox benefits, her hope is to see young people change their eating habits.

We serve a niche space for healthy food as part of our mandate to promote healthy living. Though we have tried to narrow down our primary market to healthy lifestyle enthusiasts and those with varying health conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, we have discovered there is a growing population that is aware of what they eat and how they live, she said.

Surprisingly their smoothies are a hit with local celebrities who are endorsing the product line. The photographer-cum- restaurateur draws inspiration from her Christian values.

I look up to Christ first for inspiration and guidance, said Dhliwayo.

The talented businesswoman said she loves to eat bun-less burgers, a burger with no bun but a patty with spread sauce over the top added with some onions, lettuce wedge and favourite sauce. She concluded that people should eat healthy every day, especially now in the era of non-communicable diseases.

Healthy conversations lead to better relationships and a more happier life – PhillyVoice.com

If you are man looking to start living healthy your thoughts have probably centered on finding the right diet or exercise regimen. Maybe you have consulted your doctor, ordered some running shoes or purchased fitness equipment.

Chances are you havent considered your conversational skills or contemplated any connection between your health and the value of a good conversation.

While largely unnoticed, there is a connection, one that can have a significant impact on sustaining your health and well-being. A deeper dive into the social dimensions of health reveals the important role of this overlooked tool.

The connection starts with the understanding that relationships play a major role in a mans ability to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Those familiar with my motivation-based advocacy for 50-plus mens health know that the Harvard Study for Adult Development, one of the worlds longest studies of mens health, is a frequent reference of mine. It concluded that a mans close relationships protect him from lifes discontents, help to delay mental and physical decline, and are better predictors of long and happy lives than social class, IQ or even genes.

The Mayo Clinic reinforces the Harvard study, suggesting that adults with strong social support have a reduced risk of many significant health problems, including depression, high blood pressure and an unhealthy body mass index. Mayo references the important role that friends have in promoting overall health, specifically advising individuals to listen-up and open-up, and noting that maintaining healthy friendships involves give-and-take.

A look into the gearbox of relationships reveals the key role of conversations: two-way exchanges that differ from talk, a one-way proposition.

According to Alison Wood Brooks of the Harvard Business School, conversations form the bedrock of our relationships, a profound part of the human experience. To share our ideas, thoughts and feelings with each other, we converse face to face and remotely via phone, email, text message, online comment boards and in contracts. Unfortunately, Brooks finds that most people make conversational mistakes.

Among other factors, the fear of making mistakes can create anxiety about engaging in conversation and a persons capability to converse. Research by Erica Boothby, ofCornell University, shows that given 20 everyday activities, people consistently rank their ability to have a conversation at the bottom of the list. The same people also rank others as being better than them at casual conversation.

Fortunately, Brooks says this anxiety can be managedby reframing itas excitement and using pre-performance rituals to improve performance. The bottom line is that conversations are at the core of relationships, and relationships have a material influence on our health and well-being. While the ability to converse comfortably remains a challenge for many, the benefits are huge.

Despite a history of dominating communication in the business world, which is thankfully changing, men are notorious for their inability to match women when it comes to personal expressions sharing feelings, discussing emotions and generally devoting time to conversation.

Notwithstanding the scientific case for the health benefits of conversation-boosted relationships, there are additional, more granular outcomes that can help convince men to take up the banner for verbal exchange. For functional-thinking, efficiency-oriented men, these observations will appeal to their practical instincts with applications for their personal lives as well as business settings.

Conversation is a chance to learn new things and gain new perspectives. A process for growth and a feeling of satisfaction from convening a benefit to the other party. Done properly, a personal conversation can advance your agenda and add to your well-being. Sound good?

Think of conversations as a source of social intelligence. A process that can provide insight to advance a relationship, or allow you assess its quality should that be in question. Whether just getting to know someone, or evaluating a long-term relationship, think of conversations as a means to confirm these foundational dimensions.

Do we share the same values and interests?

Are we motivated by the same factors?

Are our aspirations for the future aligned?

Is our approach to life and business compatible?

To reap the social and, ultimately, health returns of an investment in your conversation portfolio, here is my framework for maximizing the use of conversations:

1. Create a culture of conversation

Make conversation your go-to mechanism to advance your social relationships and deal with lifes ups and downs. You dont need to guess what someone else is thinking or theorize why they may be acting a certain way. Remember, its a two-way street and ideally a win-win proposition. Moreover, continuous improvement in your conversational skills can become a passion that enhances many aspects of your life.

2. Stay committed

Nothing is easy in life and there will be many times when your instinct will be to shut down and run from conversation. Dont do it. Hang in there and literally talk it through with your friends and loved ones. Crucial conversations are not meant to be easy, but they are critical in confronting the problems we face and the relationships we want to keep.

3. How you say it is important

Particularly in personal relationships, its not just what you say but how you say it. The best intended conversation can go astray because of language, form and the attitude you convey. This is no small thing.

4. Nothing Is Off the Table

A core value of conversations is the ability and willingness of both parties to address any and all subjects. Openness to the most sensitive topics is a must.

Sustaining a healthy lifestyle requires continuous motivation that can grow over time as our lives evolve and men need increasing amounts of inspiration. Conversations empower our relationships, keeping them current. They produce a social currency which buys meaning and purpose, and ultimately a sustaining level of motivation.

That said, in Americas current social context, where unrest has prompted a call for larger, community-based conversations, the ability to develop your conversational skills could prove to be particularly handy. Think of it as an added dividend for an investment in yourself and the many conversations that lie ahead.
