Tennessee scientists have partnered on cutting-edge discoveries in a race against COVID-19 – Knoxville News Sentinel

Scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory havetaken an important step in the race to understand SARS-CoV, the virus that causes COVID-19. Using sophisticated techniques, the scientists mapped out the structure of a critical protein of the coronavirus.

They'rehoping to answer this age-old scientific question that's more pressing than ever in this pandemic:How do you kill something that's not really alive?

The results of the groundbreaking work at Oak Ridge National Laboratory were published in Nature,a leading science journal.

Without this protein, the coronavirus cannot replicate. The scientists hope that by studying this structure, they will be able to find drugs that can stop it.

"The most important part is probably the fact that this protein is essential for the replication of this virus," said Dr.Daniel Kneller, a researcher at Oak Ridge National Lab andthe first author of the study. "If you inhibit this protein you're preventing the virus from assembling. Period."

While this study is focused on a very specific aspect of COVID-19, it opens a window onto the immense network of scientists and scientific organizations working on the pandemic. Tennessee is home to a state-spanning, drug development pipeline that is a microcosm of nationaland global research.

The COVID-19 protease protein is both shaped like a heart and functions as one. Without it the virus cannot grow and spread.(Photo: Andrey Kovalevsky, ORNL, U.S. Department of Energy)

Viruses are hard to treat because they arent like other things that cause diseases. Antibiotics, antifungals and antiparasitic drugs stop cells from replicating or kill them outright. But viruses arent made of cells. They are bundles of proteins and genetic material that hijack cells, forcing them to produce viral particles. Viruses cannot replicate on their own.

Theres debate among biologists as to whether viruses are actually alive because of this.

"How do you kill something that's not really alive?" said Dr. Martha S. Head, director of the Joint Institute for Biological Sciences at Oak Ridge National Lab. She oversees Oak Ridge's COVID-19 molecular design research projects. She explained that this study was part of a push to shut down viral replication at multiple stages, which is how HIV is treated.

"That combination (of drugs) shuts down so many parts of the (HIV) life cycle that you drive down viral loads to where they don't matter," Head explained.

COVID-19 Protease crystals, grown in Oak Ridge National Labs Protein Crystallization and Characterization laboratory and pictured in microscopic view.(Photo: Daniel Kneller: ORNL, U.S. Department of Energy)

To do this, the Oak Ridge team went right to the heart of the coronavirus itsproteins. When a virus infects a cell, it forces the cell to produce viral proteins. But host cells often cant create finished viral proteins, just long strands of unfinished, conjoined, protein.

Proteins are a bit like self-folding origami. Once theyre assembledthey fold into their final shape. Some proteins need to be cut by enzymes, like a protease, to get them into their final shape.Viral proteins cant do that when they're conjoined.

To make finished protein, each viral particle carries a protein enzyme called protease. The COVID-19 protease cuts unfinished viral protein, freeing it to fold itself into a final shape. If the protease cant do this, new virus cannot be made.

It is the heart of viral replication. Finding a chemical compound that can attach to and stop the heart of COVID-19 could be critical for developing a treatment. This is actually the therapeutic approach for anti-HIV drugs like Atazanavir.

But to quickly discover a drug, scientists it helps to have anaccurate map of the protease.

"If part of the protein is incorrectly modeled when you try to design drugs you may miss interactions that would otherwise form (between the drug and the protein)," explained Dr. Andrey Kovalesky, a researcher at Oak Ridge who worked on the study. He explained that without an accurate structure model, researchers might miss a potential drug or get bogged down in false positives.

To find the structure, the scientists grew large crystals made of viral protein in the lab. They took these crystals and exposed them to x-rays. When x-rays hit the protein crystal, they bend and scatter in different directions based on the shape of the protein. After they scatter they hit sensitive x-ray detectors. The scientists use the pattern of x-ray hits to ultimately figure out the shape of the protein.

This is called x-ray crystallography and was famously used to discover the structure of DNA.

The technique is like taking multiple photographs from different angles of the same object. By looking at all angles of the object you can figure out its 3-D structure.

Usually this kind of experiment is done at very cold temperatures. Thats because protein molecules tend to move more at warm temperatures. Its like photographing a moving object.

Unfortunately, getting a clearer picture can also mean missing theshape of the protein or how they move. Viruses often change shape but they cant when theyre frozen. Its like looking at frozen meat and expecting it to behave like a living muscle.

"You really have to appreciate that it's one single confirmation that you're looking at," said Dr. Paul McGonigle, director of the Drug Discovery and Development Program at Drexel University. "You hope that this is the confirmation the protein exists in most of the time, but you never know for sure."

The scientists at Oak Ridge did something special. They did this study at room temperature. Their equipment is more sensitive than the type typically used for this kind of experiment. Because of that, they could see the a fuller range of motion in the of COVID-19 protein that accuracy is very important for developing a drug.

"I think it's useful for them to have these different confirmations to target," said Dr. Ole Mortensen, associate professor of pharmacology at Drexel University. Mortensen explained that his own drug development work was made more challenging because he only had a single snapshot of his target protein.

"I'm worried that I could be missing some of the other ones. I think it makes sense what they're doing. They're opening up more possibilities." Mortensen said.

Oak Ridge might not immediately come to mind when you think medical research. But the national lab system has played a role in medical science since its inception. Sex chromosomes were discovered by pioneering geneticistLiane Russell at Oak Ridge, for example.

When Congress injected hundreds of millions of dollars into COVID-19 research through the CARES Act, The Department of Energy received $99.5 million for the national lab system. Compared to other agencies like the National Institutes of Health or Department of Defense, which got $945 million and $415 million respectively, that might not seem like a lot.

But the national lab system has unique resources that can be quickly marshaled against COVID-19. The Neutron Spallation Facility has the kind of sensitive x-ray detectors necessary to scan a protein at room temperature. The facility houses a lab capable of quickly growing large protein crystals.

"Oak Ridge is uniquely good at growing really big protein crystals," said Charles Sanders, a professor of biochemistry at Vanderbilt University. "Because they have that general expertise, it lets them do room temperature crystallography."

"They also have a network of people around the country, so if the big dogs at these agencies want stuff to happen then it can be, a wartime response, basically," Sanders said.

When the CARES act passed, it let the scientists clear their schedule and focus on COVID-19. Ordinarily, research like this takes months if not years of applying for grants and negotiating for time on equipment. This study mapped and published the protease structure in about a month.

"This is different than our usual projects," said Dr. Head. "Acrossthe Department of Energy as a whole, the speed (of organizing research) is astronomically fast."

Importantly, Oak Ridge houses the Summit supercomputer, one of the fastest supercomputers in the world. Once the structure was figured out by one team, the Summit team quickly screened it against a massive library of potential compounds, looking for potential matches.

"We broke a world record on the supercomputer," said Jeremy Smith, director of the Center for Molecular Biophysics at Oak Ridge. "We screened 1.2 billion compounds in less than a single day."

This is not the first time Dr. Smith has run a massive simulated drug test like this. Knox News covered his experiments back in March. The difference here is scale. Smiths team screened the COVID-19 protease against 1.2 billion possible drugs in a single day using Summit's whole processing system. Now the most promising candidates are being sorted out for eventual testing against live COVID-19 virus.

As impressive as Oak Ridges facilities are, they dont have the ability to do that kind of testing in house. For that, Smith turned to Dr. ColleenJonsson, a professorUniversity of Tennessee Health Sciences Center in Memphis.

Dr. Jonsson is an experienced virologist and virus hunter. She also happens to be the director of the Southeast Regional Biocontainment Laboratory, one of a small network of labs authorized by the federal government to do research on dangerous biological agents and emerging infectious diseases. She had the facility and staff to do what Oak Ridge could not:validate potential drug targets in the real world.

"A virtual screen (in a computer)is a theoretical screen." Dr. Jonsson said. "Once we find them we have to validate we're actually hitting the right thing."

Jonsson saidthat earlier in the year Smith reached out to her to test possible drugs targeting a different protein, the spike protein the coronavirus uses to attach to cells. Since then, her lab has expanded to validating other potential drugs targeting other proteins. While Dr. Jonsson hasnt yet begun to work on the COVID-19 protease, she expects to shortly.

This part of the process, where drugs are tested in live cells to see if they stop a virus from replicating, is arduous. Scientists working at the Biocontainment Lab don full biohazard suits to run their tests. Even after they validate that a potential drug works on a virus in a dish, they still need to run extensive dosage and safety testing, a process that can take months if not years.

Then they have to see if the drug actually works in a real infection. For this they need to test the drug in an infected animal that gets infected with COVID-19 like a human would. Getting an accurate animal model is a difficult process that requires its own experiments and validation.

Dr. Jonsson's team has been busy with this, and other COVID-19 work, since the start of the pandemic. They are among the very few people reporting to work at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center campus during the initial lockdowns. The Biocontainment team worked quickly to get everything ready for coronavirus research.

"They worked every day through the Safer at Home order with remarkable dedication," said Dr. Jonsson. "Everyone was working seven days a week to get everything ready."

In spite of its critical role in coronavirus research, the Biocontainment Lab is operating semi-independently. It has not received any funding yet through the CARES Act and is working solely on University of Tennessee funding.

None of thisscience is settled. The author of another structural study on the COVID-19 protease,Dr. Rolf Hilgenfeld of the German Center for Infection Research, was not convinced that the Oak Ridge study would amount to anything.

"I don't think this small difference, (between the shape of the proteins at different temperatures)whatever is its cause, matters for drug design," wrote Hilgenfeld in an email to Knox News.

The Oak Ridge team is planning to scan COVID-19 proteins using a higher resolution technique, neutron scattering,to get even better structures. Dr. Jonsson's team hopes to be running animal tests for possible COVID-19 drugs by the end of the year.

What is love? – The Conversation AU

From songs and poems to novels and movies, romantic love is one of the most enduring subjects for artworks through the ages. But what about the science?

Historical, cultural and even evolutionary evidence suggests love existed during ancient times and across many parts of the world. Romantic love has been found to exist in 147 of 166 cultures looked at in one study.

The complexity of love has much to do with how people experience it differently and how it can change over time.

Read more: Friday essay: finding spaces for love

Psychological research over the past 50 years has investigated the differences between liking someone, loving someone and being in love.

Liking is described as having positive thoughts and feelings towards someone and finding that persons company rewarding. We often also experience warmth and closeness towards the people we like. In some instances we choose to be emotionally intimate with these people.

When we love someone we experience the same positive thoughts and experiences as when we like a person. But we also experience a deep sense of care and commitment towards that person.

Being in love includes all the above but also involves feelings of sexual arousal and attraction. However, research into peoples own views of love suggests that not all love is the same.

Romantic love consists of two types: passionate and companionate love. Most romantic relationships, whether they be heterosexual or same sex, involve both these parts.

Passionate love is what people typically consider being in love. It includes feelings of passion and an intense longing for someone, to the point they might obsessively think about wanting to be in their arms.

The second part is known as companionate love. Its not felt as intensely, but its complex and connects feelings of emotional intimacy and commitment with a deep attachment toward the romantic partner.

Research looking at changes in romantic love over time typically finds that although passionate love starts high, it declines over the course of a relationship.

There are various reasons for this.

As partners learn more about each other and become more confident in the long-term future of the relationship, routines develop. The opportunities to experience novelty and excitement can also decline, as can the frequency of sexual activity. This can cause passionate love to subside.

Although a reduction in passionate love is not experienced by all couples, various studies report approximately 20-40% of couples experience this downturn. Of couples who have been married in excess of ten years, the steepest downturn is most likely to occur over the second decade.

Life events and transitions can also make it challenging to experience passion. People have competing responsibilities which affect their energy and limit the opportunities to foster passion. Parenthood is an example of this.

Read more: Love by design: when science meets sex, lust, attraction and attachment

In contrast, companionate love is typically found to increase over time.

Although research finds most romantic relationships consist of both passionate and companionate love, its the absence or reductions in companionate love, moreso than passionate love, that can negatively affect the longevity of a romantic relationship.

Love is an emotion that keeps people bonded and committed to one another. From an evolutionary psychology perspective, love evolved to keep the parents of children together long enough for them to survive and reach sexual maturity.

Read more: What is this thing called love?

The period of childhood is much longer for humans than other species. As offspring rely on adults for many years to survive and to develop the skills and abilities needed for successful living, love is especially important for humans.

Without love, its difficult to see how the human species could have evolved.

Not only is there an evolutionary foundation to love, love is rooted in biology. Neurophysiological studies into romantic love show that people who are in the throes of passionate love experience increased activation in brain regions associated with reward and pleasure.

Read more: Love lockdown: the pandemic has put pressure on many relationships, but here's how to tell if yours will survive

In fact, the brain regions activated are the same as those activated by cocaine.

These regions release chemicals such as oxytocin, vasopressin and dopamine, which produce feelings of happiness and euphoria that are also linked to sexual arousal and excitement.

Interestingly, these brain regions are not activated when thinking about non-romantic relationships such as friends. These findings tell us that liking someone is not the same as being in love with someone.

Research has found three primary styles of love. First coined by psychologist John Lee, the love styles are eros, ludus and storge. These styles include peoples beliefs and attitudes about love and act as a guide for how to approach romantic relationships.

Eros

This style of love refers to erotic love and is focused on physical attraction and engaging in sex, the quick development of strong and passionate feelings for another and intense intimacy.

Ludus

This style involves being emotionally distant and often involves game-playing. Its not surprising people who endorse this love style are unlikely to commit, feel comfortable ending relationships and often start a new relationship before ending the current one.

Storge

Storge is often regarded as a more mature form of love. Priority is given to having a relationship with a person who has similar interests, affection is openly expressed and there is less emphasis on physical attractiveness. People high on storge love are trusting of others and are not needy or dependent on others.

You may see yourself in more than one of these styles.

Evidence suggests some people possess a mixture of the three main love styles; these mixtures were labelled by Lee as mania, pragma and agape.

Read more: Darling, I love you ... from the bottom of my brain

Manic love includes intense feelings for a partner as well as worry about committing to the relationship. Pragmatic love involves making sensible relationship choices in finding a partner who will make a good companion and friend. Agape is a self-sacrificing love that is driven by a sense of duty and selflessness.

A persons love style has little to do with their genetics. Rather, its associated with the development of personality and a persons past relationship experiences.

Some studies have found people who are high on dark traits, such as narcissism, psychopathy and machiavellianism, endorse more of a ludus or pragma love style.

Read more: There are six styles of love. Which one best describes you?

People who have an insecure attachment style, involving a high need for validation and preoccupation with relationship partners, endorse more mania love, while those who are uncomfortable with intimacy and closeness do not endorse eros love.

No matter the differences in the way love is experienced, one thing remains common for all: we as humans are social animals who have a deep fascination for it.

Immunity to the coronavirus might only last a few months, UK study finds – CNBC

Immunity to Covid-19 might only last a few months, according to a U.K. study that casts doubts over the longevity of potential coronavirus vaccines.

Antibody responses to the coronavirus can peak three weeks after the initial onset of symptoms, but then begin to decline after as little as 2-3 months, researchers at Kings College London found.

The study, published Saturday on preprint server MedRxivand not yet peer-reviewed, examined the antibody levels of 64 patients and six healthcare workers who had tested positive for the virus at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS foundation trust (which runs several London hospitals) between March and June. It also monitored an additional 31 members of staff who volunteered to have regular antibody tests.

Researchers found that levels of antibodies that can fight the coronavirus peaked three weeks after the onset of symptoms but then declined. While 60% of the people tested in the study had a "potent" level of antibodies after an average of 23 days after the first onset of symptoms, 65 days after the first signs of symptoms, only 16.7% of those tested had this "potent" level of antibodies.

The levels of antibodies were higher in patients who had more severe disease, although it is not clear why, KCL noted, and some individuals who developed antibodies were asymptomatic.

The researchers noted that their study found the antibody response to Covid-19 was similar to that of other human coronaviruses, such as SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and seasonal coronaviruses associated with common colds, in which an individuals' antibody response tends to "wane over time, from as little as 12 weeks to 12-34 months after infection."

The study was led by Dr Katie Doores from KCL's School of Immunology & Microbial Sciences. Remarking on the research, she said it highlights that antibody responses to SARS-CoV-2 (or "severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2" the virus that causes the Covid-19 disease) circulating in the blood are declining after infection and that further research is needed to determine the level of antibodies required for protection from infection.

"We need to continue to measure antibody responses in these individuals to see if antibody titres continue to drop or plateau to a steady state," she said. Antibody titres refer to the presence, and amount, ofantibodieswithin a person's blood.

The research calls into question how much protection individuals who have had the coronavirus have from subsequent reinfection, and the durability of any potential vaccine.

World Health Organization officials said on Monday that patients who recover from Covid-19 may be able to get the coronavirus again, citing similar studies that suggest immunity may wane after a few months.

Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, head of the WHO's emerging diseases unit, said patients"do mount some level of an immune response."

Speaking at a news conferenceat the organization's Geneva headquarters, she added that, "what we don't know is how strong that protection is and for how long that protection will last."

"So there are a number of studies under way that are trying to answer these questions," she said.

Meanwhile, a peer-reviewed study published in the Lancet medical journal last week claimed thatCovid-19 antibodies in Spain's population were "insufficient to provide herd immunity,"which refers to when a population is allowed some exposure to the virus in order to buildimmunity among the general population.

Summer of sweat: Could 2020 be Houstons sweatiest year? – Houston Chronicle

Its summertime in the city, and everyone has the same accessory.

Sadly, its not the fashionable caftan or a new pair of hiking sandals its sweat.

If youre in Houston right now, theres a big chance youre sweating while reading this article. If youre not, you will be because its 87-90 percent humidity and a high in the 90s every day for the rest of the month.

Wearing a mask? Yeah, youre sweating.

With coronavirus cases spiking in Houston, doctors recommend people avoid spending any time indoors with others who do not live in the same household unless its an essential errand like the doctors office, grocery store or pharmacy. Typical hot weather escapes, like air-conditioned movie theaters, bowling alleys or shopping malls, are a major risk even if you wear a mask the whole time.

If you want to socialize, its best to take it outside.

Weve got the guide for you to survive the Summer of Sweat.

Sweat is mainly sodium chloride and water, said Dr. Rajani Katta, clinical assistant professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and a board certified dermatologist.

And it is definitely good for us regardless of 100-plus degree days.

The main reason that humans sweat is we need to regulate our body temperature; its actually a really beautiful system, Katta said. When we overheat, our sweat glands produce more sweat. When it evaporates, it cools off our temperature.

Humidity does not make us sweat more, she said, but it does raise our body temperatures, which causes us to sweat more. Some bodies acclimate better to the heat and dont sweat as much as others.

Older people sweat less than younger people, which puts them at an increased risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke, Katta said.

On HoustonChronicle.com: Guide to Working Out Outdoors

Sweat gets a bad wrap as the cause of bodily odor, but thats not the case either. The reason we smell it is because of bacteria that combines with the moisture to create odor.

People have sweat glands all over the body, but the main ones are in the armpits, palms and soles of our feet. Typically, there is no health problem for people who sweat too much from their underarms or palms, she said. Its more of a social issue than a physical one.

Theres no evidence that sweat provides anything helpful, but some studies suggest that sweat does help your skin barrier stay functioning well and helps deliver moisturizing factors to your skin, Katta said.

But if you exercise hard enough to sweat, you are increasing blood flow to your skin which is a good thing.

The universal tip for staying alive and well? Drink water.

Since sweat is comprised of 90 percent water and 10 percent sodium, we need to replenish as quickly as we lose it. This means, drinking lots of water before going outside and especially before exercising.

If youre not sweating, thats a danger sign.

Its a sign your body is trying to conserve its hydration, Katta said. Your body needs to sweat in Houston especially.

Avoid the hottest hours of the day (between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.) when exercising outdoors, said Shelby Saylor, association director of healthy living at the YMCA of Greater Houston. Most of the Ys group exercise classes have been moved outside since reopening in June.

Drink water the entire time if you can, and add in electrolytes via sports drinks like Gatorade or Powerade, or Pedialyte, which was initially created for sick children but is now marketed to active adults. Saylor makes Pedialyte popsicles at home.

When exercising outside, watch out for signs of heat-related illness: headache, skin that is cool to the touch and a lack of sweat. If you experience these, stop what youre doing, find shade and drink water.

A good rule for hydration is drink half of your body weight in ounces of water each day, Saylor said.

On HoustonChronicle.com: How to work out in a mask

You can also eat your water by upping your intake of vegetables (cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes) and fruit (watermelon, pineapple, blueberries, cantaloupe, grapefruit and pears).

Avoid overheating by keeping a cold, wet towel with you to put on your neck or forehead.

Its really not just about sweat, but hydration and how you motivate yourself to stay hydrated, Saylor said. Sweat all you want, just replenish it.

All it takes is a 10 minutes in the sun to sweat through your shirt, and then you smell for the rest of the day.

When Megan and Kyle Eddings exercise, they do more than glisten its a sweat fest. Which is why Megan developed the Accel Lifestyle brand with a new fabric called Prema that does not smell.

When washing his clothes, I noticed I couldnt get the funk and smell of sweat out; it was like a sweaty locker room, Eddings said about her husband. I used to think that sweat is full of gross stuff, but its really not. Its the bacteria mixed with sweats nutrients and the fabric youre wearing.

Bacteria loves polyester synthetic fabrics and will cling to them even after several washes.

Eddings learned which materials and fabrics invited bacteria the common denominator in the stink problem. Prema is a combination of supima cotton, which gets softer the more times it is washed, and high-end silver-polyester threads.

In addition to clothing, Accel Lifestyle has sold and shipped 400,000 face masks made with either Prema or another bacterial-resistant fabric, Eddings said. She has contracted with Houston Methodist and the U.S. military.

Its breathable and safe with a double layer of non-bacteria fabric, which makes you less apt to get rashes, she said. When you wash your mask, youre not washing out all the bacteria. But with ours, the bacteria isnt clinging to the fabric.

There are plenty of sweat-wicking products on the market from familiar brands.

Nikes sweat-wicking brand, DRI FIT, includes shirts, shorts, pants, jackets and sports bras. The fabric is polyester designed to wick away sweat and disperse it evenly throughout the surface of the garment, so that it evaporates quickly, according to the company.

Magellan, BCBG and Adidas have similar offerings, including caps, socks and underwear.

Eat well, breathe easier! The key to healthy lungs starts in your kitchen – Starts at 60

Research shows that being overweight or underweight can impair lung function, which is why eating a healthy, balanced diet is an important part of maintaining good lung health, Curran says. If youre overweight or underweight, you may tire more easily, have increased breathlessness or have difficulty with everyday tasks, she says, adding that, it may also increase your risk of getting infections.

Not to mention, food provides the body with energy and Curran says it takes more energy to breathe when you have a lung condition.

While theres no single food that can reduce your risk of lung disease, by following a healthy diet made up of the five main food groups, you can keep your lungs healthy. Curran recommends incorporating a wide variety of colourful vegetables, legumes and beans, fruits, grains such as breads, cereals, rice and pasta, and dairy products like milk, yoghurt and cheese into your daily diet.

One study published in the journal JAMA Oncology in October, 2019 found eating a diet high in fibre and yoghurt is associated with a reduced risk for lung cancer. While another study published in The BMJ in February 2015 linked eating a diet rich in grains and low in red and processed meat with a lower risk of chronic lung disease.

For people living with a lung condition such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Curran recommends getting in touch with a dietician or getting a referral from your GP as you may find it difficult to meet your nutritional needs.

As well as eating a varied and balanced diet, its important to drink adequate amounts of water, she adds. Curran says you should aim for at least 2 litres of water per day, unless you have been advised otherwise by your doctor.

Healthy eating doesnt have to be time-consuming either! Many people believe that eating well means slaving away in the kitchen all day but, according to Curran, thats not the case. Curran recommends opting for nutritious and easy-to-prepare snacks and meals that only need a few ingredients and take little to no time to whip up. Stuck on ideas? Why not try a veggie-packed frittata? Its super versatile, healthy and can be made with the leftovers in your fridge. Or healthy flatbread pizza with your favourite veggie toppings?

Safe Communities: The connection between exercise and personal well-being – La Grande Observer

Its a cool summer morning, temperatures in the high 40s, and the trails at Mount Emily Recreation Area beckon or the roads before the traffic picks up, or sidewalks for a stroll through summer landscapes in full bloom. Whether you run or walk, exercise is a sure way to strengthen the body, clear the mind and soothe the soul. And summers in the Grande Ronde Valley provide multiple opportunities for these activities, including virtual competitions like the Drug-Free Run, historically held at the MERA in August.

When I pull into the MERA Owsley Canyon parking lot, there is a single car, so physical distancing isnt a problem. I check my watch, consider my trail options, then kick into a slow, easy pace. Ive been running at MERA for five or six years, and before that the roads around La Grande and elsewhere for more than 40 years. Running is an efficient way to stay in shape, and a path to setting and achieving goals and challenging your abilities. But running isnt for everyone. I recently read an article about the benefits of walking, and how 20-30 minutes of walking a day can improve your physical and mental well-being. So, on days when the weather isnt cooperating, or Im feeling less energetic, a walk around town is a viable alternative. In either case, run or walk, physical exercise of some sort can give you a daily focus that contributes to an overall healthy lifestyle.

The Union County Safe Communities Coalition recognizes the connection between exercise and personal well-being. Starting with the Drug-Free Relay and more recently the Drug-Free Run, the coalition sponsors events it believes promote the benefits of healthy bodies and minds. Physical activity has the ability to influence psychological, behavioral and neurochemical processes that contribute to substance use disorders.

Broadly, health-promoting behaviors, like running and walking, are related to other personal behaviors that lead to a healthy lifestyle and choices. For example, physically active people typically drink alcohol only in moderation and do not smoke cigarettes. Exercise can lessen mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, which can contribute to substance abuse. Many forms of exercise, even in these times of physical distancing, have a social component that promotes societal integration and prevents loneliness and isolation. Finally, there is evidence that physical activity reduces the rate of drug use acquisition and escalation and the rate of reinstatement of drug-seeking. The most amazing thing about these relationships is that they apply to people of all ages.

Physical activity also is a way to spend time with your family and friends. The MERA trails accommodate fitness levels from toddlers to grandparents. Make a trip to the Owsley Canyon trailhead for an outing for exercise and have a healthy snack afterward.

Or, if you are the competitive type, check out this years virtual Drug-Free Run sponsored by the Union County Safe Communities Coalition at https://drugfreerun.itsyourrace.com. You have all of August to register a run or walk, so there is time to train and aim for a personal best or organize a family effort. In any case, know that when you do, youll be supporting the efforts of the Safe Communities Coalition, and doing yourself and your family a huge benefit by being physically active.

Opinion: Dont wear a mask because Beshear told you to. Do it to save lives and the economy – Courier Journal

Alan L. Keck, Opinion contributor Published 6:01 a.m. ET July 14, 2020

Businesses and cities across the country are requiring people to wear masks, which some people say infringe upon their individual rights. USA TODAY

I understand the frustration that builds.

Not only has the coronavirus pandemic inflicted extreme cost and pain across Kentucky, the way in which it has been governed has often been inconsistent. Rules and guidelines waffle; at times, hypocrisy reigns.

We were told to practice social distancing. We were discouraged from going to houses of worship. Yet, blind eyes were turned to mass riots and protests. This should have never been a truth in America. Likewise, the idea that keeping child care centers closed is somehow safer than allowing crowds in grocery and hardware stores never made sense. Massive corporations got a pass to stay open while Main Street was forced to close.

Kentuckians have been diligent in flattening the curve, but we continue to suffer. We have led the nation in unemployment claims, and thousands are struggling to survive still waiting for their benefits. Our budget shortfall will likely be close to $1 billion. Without question we are seeing increases in anxiety, depression and drug use.

And so its with this pain and frustration in mind that I make a new plea a new request for cooperation.

Please wear a mask. But dont do it because a politician told you to. Do it to save our economy and to save lives.

Opinion: Sending kidsto schools without nurses is irresponsible in COVID-19 crisis

This is how often you should wash your cloth face mask. USA TODAY

While I believe Gov. Andy Beshears actions are well intended and that he cares about Kentuckians, it has been clear throughout this pandemic he doesnt value due process. Though we continue to bear the brunt of his policy decisions, this is a time for all leaders to work together. We have to embrace solutions that mitigate risk while promoting a thriving economy.

Dont wear a mask because Gov. Beshear said so, or because I say so. Do it to ensure he has no reason to shut down our economy again. Wear a mask so he will not shutter our optometrists, chiropractorsor other elective but altogether necessary medical services. Do it to keep our barber shops, gyms, hair salonsand restaurants open. Wear a mask to help Kentuckians keep their jobs.

Wear a mask because it will help our children get back to the routines they so desperately need while helping parents return to work. A recent Washington Post article reported that nearly a third of the nations workforce has children at home, and theyre struggling to keep up. Researchers estimate nearly 10% of economic activity will be completely wiped out as long as schools and day cares remain closed. Moreover, the American Academy of Pediatrics warned that keeping children out of school in the fall could lead to mental and physical harm by causing social isolation. We have to find a safe way to bring these services back to Kentucky families, and it starts by covering our faces.

Opinion: Embracing telehealth helped usflatten the curve in COVID-19 battle

Alan L. Keck is the mayor of Somerset.(Photo: Picasa)

Wear a mask because it will likely help sports resume this fall, ensuring those who can compete at the next level get that opportunity and opening the door to more options for physical activity. This is a crucial point in the conversation about beating this virus: Wearing a mask isnt the only way we combat it. We must begin talking about getting proper exercise, better nutrition, adequate sunlight, and taking the necessary steps to promote mental and spiritual wellness along with other key elements of a healthy lifestyle. As we become a healthier state, the better prepared we are and the more we can prevent the next pandemic from wrecking as many lives as this one.

Finally, wear a mask because you care, about yourself and your family members. Your fellow Kentuckians. Your neighbors, your friends. Because you care about whether they contract COVID-19 and you care about whether more people contracting it causes them to lose their jobs. Masks are not 100% effective, but nothing we do to fight this virus will be even a vaccine. We must use the best methods we have available. I believe we the people are at our best when we lead with kindness and compassion, even when we have to make personal sacrifices to do so.

The coronavirus pandemic has been the challenge of our lifetime. Ive said for weeks now that Somerset and Pulaski County residents have risen to that challenge. We have flattened the curve and prevented our hospitals from being overwhelmed which, after all, was the original goal. We are not perfect, but we have led in many ways, including drafting strategic reopening proposals that allowed our friends and loved ones to get back to work.

Now we must lead in a different way. I understand you are frustrated. So am I. But its time we do what it takes to put this virus behind us, as quickly as we can.

Chamomile tea: Reduce your risk of dying by regularly drinking this tea – EconoTimes

Did you know that chamomile tea can reduce your risk of death no matter what may cause it?

We all want to lead a healthier and longer life. Who doesn't? All the more now that the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has shown us how fragile our lives are and how death can easily come and snuff it.

The pandemic has sure made all of us take a long and hard look at our health and made us realized why it is important that we take care of ourselves and not wait for something to happen to prompt us to do so.

Staying healthy and prolonging your life span takes a lifelong commitment. You have to be committed to a healthy lifestyle.

A healthy lifestyle would mean adhering to a healthy diet and regular exercise. Not the restrictive diet but a diet plan that teaches you to be mindful of what food and drink you take into your body in moderation. And, not the hardcore exercise but just 30 minutes of physical activity every day.

However, this is easier said than done. It takes determination to stick with this plan to the very end.

Thankfully, there are small things that you can do to boost your plan of longevity. And, these things are also backed by science.

One such example is the research that found that drinking chamomile tea can reduce your risk of dying from all causes.

Chamomile tea is made from dried flowers that are similar to daisies and belong to the plant family of Asteraceae.

While chamomile tea is known to have plenty of health benefits, one study found that the drink is linked to having a longer life.

The study, which was published in the Gerontologist journal, found that Mexican-American women aged 65 and above had reduced their risk of death from whatever causes after drinking chamomile tea in a span of seven years.

The association between chamomile tea and decreased mortality, however, is unclear.

But, several studies have linked the chamomile tea to lowering the risk for heart diseases, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

Chamomile tea is also known to promote sleep and treat insomnia, boosts immunity, treat colds, reduces muscle spasms and period pain, soothes stomachache, treats cuts, wound and skin conditions, reduces stress, lightens skin, reduces acne, helps in anti-aging, treats sunburn, reduces dark circles under the eye and gets rid of dandruff.

Survey led by Dalhousie researcher shows COVID-19 lockdowns impact on children, youth activity – Globalnews.ca

A Dalhousie professor in Halifax has authored a paper showing the impact COVID-19 restrictions have had on kids physical health and what parents can do to help keep them active.

In a statement, the University of Dalhousie said Sarah Moore of the schools faculty of health led a national survey commissioned by ParticipACTION showing that restricted access to playgrounds, schools, child care, playdates, and instructions to stay home have made it more challenging than ever for kids to develop and maintain healthy movement behaviour habits.

READ MORE: COVID-19 lockdown is tough on kids. Heres what parents can do

ParticipACTION is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to help Canadians sit less and move more.

The study shows that in April, one month after the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic, less than three per cent of Canadian youth ages five to 17 were meeting the minimum recommendations in the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep in contrast to 15 per cent before the health crisis.

This pandemic has been extremely difficult for families, but also a time for children and their parents to reconnect through play, physical activity, and the outdoors, Moore said in a press release.

Take some time together this summer to get outside and be active it may help to mitigate the negative effects of this crisis for you and your children.

Trending Stories

According to Moore, more than 1,500 Canadian parents responded to the survey, which assessed COVID-19-related changes in their childs movement and play behaviours.

The study shows that grades for physical activity, screen time and 24-hour movement behaviours would all be F during the COVID-19 lockdown.

This survey showed that children and youth had lower physical activity levels, less outdoor time, higher leisure screen time and more sleep during the outbreak, said Dr. Mark Tremblay, chair of Outdoor Play Canada, chief scientific officer for the ParticipACTION Report Card and senior scientist at the CHEO Research Institute in Ottawa.

Story continues below advertisement

The rapid deterioration in healthy lifestyle behaviours from already low levels reminds us of the delicate balance required between efforts to prevent disease transmission and those to promote healthy behaviours.

As a result of the change in healthy lifestyles among families, Moore suggests that the survey findings can guide summer homework for families.

READ MORE:How are Canadian kids holding up amid COVID-19?

The homework includes parental involvement in physical activity with their kids, owning a dog and adopting new hobbies.

The study states that the survey provides evidence of the COVID-19 outbreak having a negative impact on the movement and play behaviours of children and youth.

These findings can guide efforts to preserve and promote child health during the COVID-19 outbreak and crisis recovery period, and to inform strategies to mitigate potential harm during future pandemics, the study states.

AMA Position Statement on the Health and Wellbeing of Doctors and Medical Students

The AMA today released its revised Position Statement on the Health and Wellbeing of Doctors and Medical Students.

AMA President, Dr Tony Bartone, said that the health and welfare of doctors and medical students is an absolute priority for the AMA.

Dr Bartone said that the AMA has for many years provided leadership for the medical profession to collaboratively advance the processes that will enhance the physical and mental health of doctors and medical students, and improve the health and wellbeing of the entire profession.

Doctors and medical students face a range of pressures and stressors over the course of their training and career, and it is vital that we address these issues on an individual level and as a profession across the profession, Dr Bartone said.

The day-to-day pressures of being a doctor have touched us all, directly or indirectly, and they can have a profound and unfortunately tragic impact on either our own careers or the careers of our colleagues.

Sadly, there are still some instances in medical workplace culture that permit bullying and harassment and perpetuate the fear of reprisal.

The 2019 Medical Training Survey revealed that one in three trainees reported they had witnessed or experienced bullying or harassment. This is totally unacceptable, and must be eliminated from the workplace.

The revised and updated Position Statement on the Health and Wellbeing of Doctors and Medical Students 2020 identifies the actions that doctors can take at many levels to support the profession to promote good mental health and physical health, and the adoption of a healthy lifestyle for doctors throughout their medical training and medical careers.

It is vital we make sure appropriate support and resources are in place to help doctors and medical students with their own health, Dr Bartone said.

We must build on the great work that is already occurring. Nowhere is this better illustrated than in times of crisis like COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented unique challenges for doctors to maintain their own psychosocial wellbeing while responding to the pandemic and its effect on the health of the broader community.

The revised Position Statement emphasises that consideration needs to be given to the level of work, stress, difficult clinical treatment decisions, and large numbers of ill patients that may impact the wellbeing of all frontline healthcare workers during the coronavirus crisis.

Clear, consistent, and timely communication and messaging from health authorities and employers to all healthcare workers should be a priority during this time to maintain wellbeing and reduce anxiety from misinformation. This will maintain a motivated and safe workforce during this period.

It is important that doctors look out for the health of their colleagues during this difficult and stressful time.

The AMAs subsidiary company, Doctors Health Services Pty Ltd (DrHS), funds a network of independent doctors health advisory services around the country that provide triage and referral services, and education and other support.

These are delivered with the support of the Medical Board of Australia. More information is available at http://www.drs4drs.com.au

More recently, Department of Health funding has facilitated the launch of a new DrHS telehealth service for doctors and medical students who are struggling with their mental health. To access this service, doctors and medical students can call 1300 374 377 (1300 DR4 DRS)

Background

Since the AMA first developed this Position Statement in 2011, much has happened to inform the revised statement. This includes, but is not limited to:

This Position Statement addresses both the structural and individual barriers to health and wellbeing, and acknowledges that physical and mental health are interrelated. This supports the WHO definition of health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing.

Dr Bartone said that the AMA has been working with a range of stakeholders to develop the National Medical Framework for coordinated action on doctor and medical student wellbeing.

The Framework, which brings together the best available evidence on what works to prevent and respond to mental ill-health and suicide in the medical profession, will be launched in coming months, Dr Bartone said.

The AMA Position Statement on the Health and Wellbeing of Doctors and Medical Students 2020 is available at https://ama.com.au/position-statement/health-and-wellbeing-doctors-and-medical-students-2020

Philips and Flevo Hospital sign long-term strategic partnership agreement enabling continuous innovation and optimization of patient care -…

Flevo Hospital partnership with Philips

July 14, 2020

Amsterdam, the Netherlands Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA), a global leader in health technology, and Flevo Hospital today announced they have signed a 10-year strategic partnership agreement to continuously innovate and optimize patient care in the Almere region of the Netherlands.

The collaboration has four strategic priorities: 1) Achieving the strategic objective of 'the right care in the right place' by means of innovations and the optimal use of (medical) technology; 2) Modernizing care and strengthening communication between Flevo Hospital and its patients and partners; 3) Increasing the enthusiasm and involvement of hospital employees by unburdening care professionals and modernizing work processes; and 4) Saving costs and improving the efficiency of technology.

We are confronted with many new challenges, but want to keep providing a high standard of affordable care not only within the hospital but also increasingly outside the hospital, said Anita Arts, CEO of Flevo Hospital, Almere, the Netherlands. We want to involve our patients even more closely in their care. This is possible with the help of technological solutions. Philips is a partner for the future with whom we want to innovate and develop new solutions for our strategic challenges.

Thanks to our broad portfolio, we can help Flevo Hospital achieve its ambitions and overcome the challenges it faces, said Henk Valk, CEO at Philips Benelux. In this collaboration, we will work as partners to realize a future-proof hospital. Innovation is the most important part, but good education, together with the maintenance and service of our technology, are also enormously important for the Flevo Hospital to be able to deliver high-quality patient care. In every way, we can strengthen each other and help to improve care, making cooperations like this crucial now and into the future.

During the term of the contract, Philips will act as the preferred supplier of imaging systems, such as MR, CT and ultrasound, and patient monitoring systems. The purchase of equipment is organized through a multi-year medical technology plan to reduce costs for the hospital and make it more transparent. Flevo Hospital will gain early insight into new Philips solutions to ensure that the right equipment is purchased at the right time. The ambition of Flevo Hospital is to be able to quickly use new innovative Philips solutions to optimize workflows, patient pathways and patient experiences while driving efficiencies and cost optimization.

Under the agreement, Philips and Flevo Hospital will also work on innovation programs aimed at introducing innovative technologies and ensuring their optimal use, such as expanding patient monitoring in the hospital, as well as facilitating care outside the hospital. Another goal focuses on further enhancing the staff experience to foster passionate and committed employees. Each year, an education plan will be agreed on for the development and education of healthcare providers and medical technicians in the hospital, so that Philips' technology can be used optimally and efficiently for patient care.
