Flower Pesticides Linked to Neurological Problems – Anti Aging News

Researchers from the University of California in San Diego and the University of Minnesota have discovered a link between neurological behaviors in Ecuadorian children and pesticide use during flower growing seasons. Their findings were published in the medical journal NeuroToxicology in May of 2017. Dr. Jose R. Suarez-Lopez Ph.D., an assistant professor at the University of San Diego in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health, served as first author of the study.

Testing of Children in Agricultural Areas

Ecuador produces a large portion of the worlds cut flowers. The industry relies on pesticides to ensure successful harvests. Previous research using animals as test subjects suggested a link between temporary neurological disorders and pesticide exposure.

The research team tested 308 Ecuadorian children between the ages of 4 and 9 years of age who live near, but do not work in, flower producing areas. Behavioral and blood tests were conducted before peak production for the Mothers Day holiday, and within 100 days after harvest.

Results show that children tested shortly after the harvest ended displayed lower attention spans, less self-control, inferior hand-eye coordination, and problems perceiving and interacting with visual stimuli when compared to children tested later.

The authors of the study conclude that exposure to pesticides causes a short-term decline in neurological functions. According to Dr. Suarez-Lopez, this is of concern due to timing. The growing season corresponds with end-of-term testing in schools. Children suffering from temporary impairment due to pesticide exposure may receive lower scores on important academic exams. These lower scores may then affect their ability to qualify for certain opportunities in higher education or the job market.

The Effects of Agricultural Poisons

Newborns who are exposed to agricultural chemicals are known to have higher risks of certain neurological conditions, such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and abnormalities in reflex, psychomotor, and mental function development. The effects are more prevalent in boys than girls. The short-term disorders detailed in the published study are in addition to these known, long-term effects.

The chemicals in question contain a substance called organophosphate, which is used to destroy pests on flowers before export. In the human body, organophosphates inhibit the actions of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE). AChE regulates acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that allows nerves in the body and brain cells to communicate. Organophosphates are also known to destroy neurons and supporting brain cells. Low Ache levels are associated with impulsive behaviors and low attention spans and scores on memory tests.

The ESPINA Study and Future Research

The ESPINA study is an on-going study that examines the effects of agricultural toxins on children in Ecuador. The study published by Dr. Suarez-Lopezs team is part of this larger effort to understand how environmental pollutants affect the long-term development and welfare of young people growing up in agricultural areas.

Researchers believe their findings prove that exposure to certain pesticides alters cognition, and the ability to learn and interact socially in children. Dr. Suarez-Lopez suggests that a better understanding can be achieved by repeating the tests with a larger sample group. In addition to conducting blood and behavioral tests before and after harvests, an additional test would be conducted during the harvest period, when exposure to agricultural pesticides peaks.

Chemistry Teacher Arrested for Allegedly Having Sex with 17-Year-Old Student in Car – Breitbart News

Tiffany Michelle Geliga, 35, was charged with two counts of sexual assault by a person 24 years of age or older on a 16 or 17-year-old victim, WFLA reported.

Police began investigating Geliga afterPort St. Lucie High School administrators told them that a 17-year-old students mother contacted the school to report that the teacher texted her son many times at odd hours.

The woman said she believed nothing happened between her son and Geliga but suspected that she had an inappropriate relationship with another student.

School officials questioned that 17-year-old boy, who admitted to having sex with Geliga two times in her car on separate occasions and met her off campus in late April or early May,WPTV reports.

He added that he also received late-night phone calls and text messages from Geliga.

Investigators said the victim met Geliga two months ago when she began tutoring him atIndian River State College in Port St. Lucie, the Palm Beach Post reported.

They reportedly started text messaging each other after the victim sent a message requesting Geligas assistance in making an introduction to a female student.

Police initiated a controlled phone call between the 17-year-old and Geliga in whichthey monitored their conversation.

On the call, Geliga told the student she had never done anything inappropriate with other students just you, and acknowledged that she had a sexual relationship with him. She then offered to foot the bill for a stay at a West Palm Beach hotel.

Geliga was released from the St. Lucie County Jail after she posted $30,000 bail Friday.

Geliga started teaching at Port St. Lucie High School back in August 2014 and is reportedly married with two children.

Major finding in human anatomy has implications for many brain … – The Denver Post

Kari Alitalo had studied lymphatic vessels for more than two decades. So he knew that this network, which carries immune cells throughout the body and removes waste and toxins, didnt extend into the brain: This had been accepted wisdom for more than 300 years. Nobody questioned that it stopped at the brain, says Alitalo, a scientist at the University of Helsinki in Finland.

Three years ago, Alitalo wanted to develop a more precise map of the lymphatic system. To do this, he used genetically modified mice whose lymphatic vessels glowed when illuminated by a particular wavelength of light. (The mice had been given a gene from a species of glowing jellyfish.)

When viewing the modified mice under the light, Aleksanteri Aspelund, a medical student in Alitalos laboratory, saw something unexpected: The heads of the mice glowed. At first, he suspected that there was something wrong with the animals, the lighting or the measuring equipment. But when Alitalo and Aspelund repeated the experiment, they got the same result. It seemed that the lymphatic vessels extended to the brain after all.

This was surprising, to say the least: In the 21st century, major findings involving basic human anatomy are rare. These days, you dont make discoveries like this, Alitalo says. But every once in a while in science, you stumble on something really unexpected. You open a new door, to a whole new world.

Alitalo is one of several scientists exploring this new world. Working independently, several other researchers, including Maiken Nedergaard of the University of Rochester and Jonathan Kipnis of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, have also shown that lymphatic vessels extend into the brain.

The discovery is much more than a historical footnote. It has major implications for a wide variety of brain diseases, including Alzheimers, multiple sclerosis, stroke and traumatic brain injury.

Researchers have identified two networks: the vessels that lead into and surround the brain, and those within the brain itself. The first is known as the lymphatic system for the brain, while the latter is called the glymphatic system. The g added to lymphatic refers to glia, the kind of neuron that makes up the lymphatic vessels in the brain. The glymphatic vessels carry cerebrospinal fluid and immune cells into the brain and remove cellular trash from it.

Alitalo, Nedergaard, Kipnis and others have found evidence that when the systems malfunction, the brain can become clogged with toxins and suffused with inflammatory immune cells. Over decades, this process may play a key role in Alzheimers disease, Huntingtons disease, Parkinsons disease and other neurodegenerative illnesses, research suggests. This is a revolutionary finding, Nedergaard says. This system plays a huge role in the health of the brain.

Nedergaard describes the glymphatic system as like a dishwasher for the brain. The brain is very active, she says, and so it produces a lot of junk that needs to be cleaned out.

In hindsight, she says, the system should have been noticed long ago. When the skull and head are dissected, the vessels are visible to the naked eye. But no one bothered to really look: Usually the brain is seen only as a bunch of nerve cells. We have come to think of the brain as a computer. And its not. Its a living organ.

Nedergaard and Helene Benveniste, a scientist at Yale University, have found evidence linking problems in the lymphatic and glymphatic systems to Alzheimers. In a study on mice, they showed that glymphatic dysfunction contributes to the buildup in the brain of amyloid beta, a protein that plays a key role in the disease.

Last year, Jeff Iliff, a neuroscientist at Oregon Health & Science University, and several colleagues examined postmortem tissue from 79 human brains. They focused on aquaporin-4, a key protein in glymphatic vessels. In the brains of people with Alzheimers, this protein was jumbled; in those without the disease, the protein was well organized. This suggests that glymphatic breakdowns may play a role in the disease, Iliff says.

The vessels have also been implicated in autoimmune disease. Researchers knew that the immune system has limited access to the brain. But at the same time, the immune system kept tabs on the brains status; no one knew exactly how. Some researchers theorize that the glymphatic system could be the conduit and that in diseases such as multiple sclerosis where the bodys immune system attacks certain brain cells the communication may go awry.

The system may also play a role in symptoms of traumatic brain injury. Nedergaard has shown that in mice, the injuries can produce lasting damage to the glymphatic vessels, which are quite fragile. Mice are a good model, she says, because their glymphatic systems are very similar to humans. She and Iliff found that even months after being injured, the animals brains were still not clearing waste efficiently, leading to a buildup of toxic compounds, including amyloid beta. Nedergaard returns to the dishwasher analogy. Its like if you only use a third of the water when you turn on the machine, she says. You wont get clean dishes.

Recent research has also found evidence that the glymphatic system may extend into the eye. For decades, scientists have noted that many people with Alzheimers disease also have glaucoma, in which damage to the optic nerve causes vision loss. But they struggled to find a common mechanism; the glymphatic system may be the link.

In January, Belgian and Swiss researchers identified a rich network of glymphatic vessels within the optic nerve. The scientists also found that when these vessels malfunction, they seem to leave behind deposits of amyloid beta as well as other neurotoxins that damage the optic nerve.

And in March, Harvard University researchers reported that glymphatic flow is significantly decreased in the period just before a migraine. The intense pain in these headaches is caused largely by inflamed nerves in the tissue that surrounds the brain. Neuroscientists Rami Burstein and Aaron Schain, the lead authors, theorize that faulty clearance of molecular waste from the brain could trigger inflammation in these pain fibers.

One key to glymphatic performance seems to be sleep. Nedergaard has shown that at least in mice, the system processes twice as much fluid during sleep as it does during wakefulness. She and her colleagues focused on amyloid beta; they found that the lymphatic system removed much more of the protein when the animals were asleep than when they were awake. She suggests that over time, sleep dysfunction may contribute to Alzheimers and perhaps other brain illnesses. You only clean your brain when youre sleeping, she says. This is probably an important reason that we sleep. You need time off from consciousness to do the housekeeping.

Nedergaard and Benveniste have also found that sleep position is crucial. In an upright position someone who is sitting or standing waste is removed much less efficiently. Sleeping on your stomach is also not very effective; sleeping on your back is somewhat better, while lying on your side appears to produce the best results. The reason for these differences remains unclear, but Nedergaard suspects that it is probably related to the mechanical engineering of the lymphatic vessels and valves; she suggests that the healthiest approach may be to move periodically while you sleep.

Sleep is probably not the only way to improve glymphatic flow. For instance, a paper published in January by Chinese researchers reported that in mice, omega-3 fatty acidsimproved glymphatic functioning.

Benveniste is examining dexmedetomidine, an anesthetic that may have the ability to improve glymphatic flow. And in a small human study, other scientists have found that deep breathing significantly increases the glymphatic transport of cerebrospinal fluid into the brain.

Alitalo is experimenting with growth factor
s, compounds that can foster regrowth of the vessels in and around the brain. He has used this method to repair lymphatic vessels in pigs and is now testing the approach in the brains of mice that have a version of Alzheimers.

Right now there are no clinical therapies in this area, he says. But give it a little time. This has only just been discovered.

According to TV Line, the new show is expected to premiere on ABC sometime midseason. The spinoff to Ellen Pompeos hit serieswill follow the lives of a group of heroic firefighters who risk their lives in the line of duty. For the past 13 seasons, Greys Anatomy has featured a slew of firefighters who arrive at the hospital either to seek treatment or to send patients to receive the best care they deserve. According to Variety, Rhimes will also act as executive producer and will be working alongside Betsy Beers and showrunner Stacy McKee.

In the finale episode of the latest season ofGreys Anatomy, Dr. Stephanie Edwards (Jerrika Hinton) risked her own life to help save a young girl while some parts of the hospital went down in flames. Even though she got out alive, Dr. Edwards expressed her desire to leave her practice later during her conversationwith Dr. Webber (James Pickens Jr.).

Edwards storyline didnt come as a shock to fans because Hintons departure from Greys Anatomy has already been reported several months back. The actress will be moving on to a different project thats also being helmed by Rhimes.

Elsewhere in the episode, Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) found out that his sister, Megan, is very much alive. Meredith Grey (Pompeo) broke the news to Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson). The latter was in a relationship with Megan andblamed himself for months and months on end, thinking that Megan is already dead. Meredith and Nathans relationship is just starting, but things can end for the two characters even before they begin with Megans arrival in Season 14.

VANCOUVER, B.C. Consistency is the name of the game forVancouver Whitecaps FC right now, and it's no coincidence that its reaping results.

Carl Robinson fielded an unchanged starting lineup for the fifth straight match in Saturday's 2-0 win over Western Conference leaders Sporting Kansas City at BC Place. Vancouver's new-look 4-1-4-1 lineup had brought the 'Caps some success on the road in a tough four-game road stretch. They came back with six points and could have had more, given their four fine performances.

Robinson admitted he toyed with the idea of mixing things up, but went with an if it ain't broke, don't fix it approach, and it paid off.

"I gave it lots of thought," Robinson said. "Sometimes you get it right when you win, or get a result or a performance, and sometimes you dont. So lots of thought has gone into it. I just felt it was right."

The Whitecaps recent chemistry has been noticeable, especially on the defensive side, with two clean sheets in their last three matches. Elsewhere on the pitch, link-up play is improving every game as players understanding grows. With three wins in their last four games, the results speak for themselves.

Defender Sheanon Williams says hes excited by what may lie in store for this group.

"As the weeks go on I have started to feel more comfortable with the players that Im playing with on my side," said theMLS veteran. "This team is a team that day in, day out, comes to work. Even the substitutes that come on, you can see the work that everybody does for each other its something that I havent seen. Its a credit to the team and the guys we have in that locker room.

"I have been in the league eight years and this is definitely the most excited that I have been to be on a team. I think that this team has everything to make a deep run and to be successful in this league. Im excited and I hope everyone else is."

Center backTim Parker agrees.

"In the backline it's great, we're grooving pretty well now," he said. "We're not giving up many chances. In front of us, it's good. We all understand the kind of team we want to be and the kind of players we want and how we want to play the game."

But Robinson doesn't want his team to feel too settled. Injuries and a lack of available bodies are factors in the Whitecaps' lineup stability, and as much as he likes the consistency and chemistry, the coach also wants competition for places.

"I just said to them, when players become healthy, competition will rise," Robinson said. "Challenges for your starting spot will rise. The strong will come out and the weak will have to get their head down and fight again. And thats what pleases me the most. You know, weve been consistent, weve performed, weve got some really good results."

Starting this week, Robinson will have to balance rotation, competition and continuity. The games now come thick and fast for Vancouver, starting with a two-legged Canadian Championship semifinal against the Montreal Impact that opens at BC Place on Tuesday night (10 pm ET | TSN1 in Canada).

Why Puma Biotechnology Inc Jumped Higher Today – Motley Fool

Shares ofPuma Biotechnology(NASDAQ:PBYI) are up 44% at 12:12 p.m., having been up as much as 84% today, as investors digest the Food and Drug Administration documentsposted ahead of Wednesday's advisory committee meeting to review the approvability of Puma's breast cancer drug neratinib.

Today's jump wasn't because of surprisingly good data but rather a relative lack of negative opinions of neratinib by the FDA reviewers.

Puma Biotechnology is trying to get neratinib approved as an extended treatment for breast cancer after the patient has received surgery followed by Herceptin and chemotherapy. The clinical trial showed that adding neratinib to that standard of care decreased the reoccurrence of breast cancer compared to placebo after a year of treatment with neratinib. But the drug causes severe diarrhea in many patients, which leads to patients reducing the dose or stopping the drug altogether.

Good efficacy with poor tolerability has led investors to worry about the approvability of the drug. The company'snegotiatingwith the FDA over which patients to include in the analysis didn't help, although that issue appears to be mostlyworked out. Today's review was fairly neutral, with the documents for the advisory committee noting that the efficacy analysis was basically the same using either set of data, "supporting an effect of neratinib" while also pointing out that "the tolerability of neratinib in this patient population is a concern."

The lack of a negative review is good news for Puma Biotechnology, but given the fairly neutral stance, the committee of outside experts could have a big influence on the FDA's final decision when they meet on Wednesday. The biggest thing for investors to watch is the committee's opinion of the diarrhea side effect and whether the members think treating with an antidiarrheal prophylaxisis an acceptable way to combat it. The doctors' opinions on neratinib relative to other post-surgery treatments will also be important because a negative opinion relative to the other treatments could foretell poor neratinib sales even if the drug is approved.

Lets state the obvious: Food specials and happy hours are a great deal for diners, but what about the restaurateurs? Do discount nights actually do anything for their bottom line? According to a few food fixtures in town, the answer is yes, but you need to play the long game.

Normally, there isnt a ton of sales volume from 5 to 6, says Jay Bayer, co-owner of Saison. The Jackson Ward restaurant offers $2 off drafts, cocktails and small plates from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. If you can generate any sort of revenue that didnt already exist through discounted pricing, it gets people in the door, and hopefully they can stay a little longer to buy some more food.

Kendra Feather adopted a date-night strategy at Garnetts Cafe in The Fan to gain traction. Garnetts is so tiny, it has always been a bit of a secret squirrel. And it took years for it to break even because so many people just blinked and missed it, she says. So the main reason we started doing Date Night was to attract customers in the evenings.

Often, discounted food and drink cuts into businesses overhead, with several restaurant workers saying off the record that charging pennies for a taco or selling buckets of beer for the lint in your pocket isnt exactly the most lucrative business strategy. In the end, they hope that patrons will stay for another round of drinks, order a full meal with the normal markups or simply return when specials arent running.

Ultimately, cheap-eats specials are at their best for both customers and proprietors when they dont reinvent the wheel. I like the idea of sharing a sandwich and some wine with a friend, says Feather. Going out doesnt always have to be so expensive. And wine doesnt have to be formal to be enjoyable.

Carlos Gonzalez: Anatomy of a slump and why Rockies’ slugger thinks he’ll bust out of it – The Denver Post

CINCINNATI Carlos Gonzalez sat at his locker, flashing his bright CarGo smile.

It seemed a bit out of place considering the topic at hand: a hitting slump that began with a 2-for-17 start and remained in place deep into May.

Gonzalez, however, refuses to dwell on his ugly numbers.

When you are going bad, its easy to get negative, but I just dont let myself go there, the three-time all-star right fielder said. You have to remind yourself that you can do damage at any time. And every time you come to the plate, you have to think, Im one step closer to getting hot.

But when the Rockies arrived at Great American Ball Park Friday for a weekend series against the Reds, Gonzalez wasnt even lukewarm. He was hitting .210 with a .279 on-base percentage and just two home runs in 138 at-bats. Though hes hit mostly from the third or fourth spot until getting dropped to fifth in recent games, he had just 11 RBIs to show for it. Thats what happens when you hit .182 with runners in scoring position.

But the Rockies, ever mindful of Gonzalezs ability to break out at any moment, are keeping the faith.

When you have been good for as long as CarGo, you have to believe that after game No. 162, hes going to be hitting .290-something, with 30 homers and 90 RBIs, assistant hitting coach Jeff Salazar said. So CarGo can truthfully tell himself, Im hitting .180 right now, so there is a good chance Im about to hit .340 for the next stretch.

That takes a lot of confidence, trust in yourself and trust in the organization. And trust from the organization, too.

When Gonzalezs swing is on, its one of the prettiest in baseball, drawing comparisons to Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. But when its not, Gonzalez flails at breaking pitches and frequently hits weak grounders to second base.

Gonzalezs strikeouts, contrary to conventional wisdom, dont risesubstantially when hes in a slump. His strikeout rate is 25.4 percent this season, compared to 24.2 percent for his career. He is, after all, a slugger. Perhaps his whiffs are just more noticeable when they arent offset by second-deck moon shots.

Its also a misnomer that Gonzalez always starts in a funk. This is Gonzalezs eighth season with Colorado and hes had really three poor Aprils: 2011 when he hit .228 with one homer; 2015, with a .200 average and two homers; and this season, .216 with two homers.

But in 2012 (.303 average, four homers) and 2013 (.306, five homers), he came out of the gate slugging. Gonzalezs ebbs and flows are more about being in sync at the plate than about the calendar.

Gonzalezs swing is all about timing, and when his timing gets a few ticks off, he gets out of whack.

With CarGo, the leg kick is his timing mechanism, manager Bud Black said. When hes off, hes going to be out way out front on breaking balls and behind on the fastball.

But I see that gap narrowing, where hes becoming on time for both pitches. Youll know hes back when hes on top of fastballs and his hands are sitting back enough to handle the off-speed pitch.

Thats why Black was encouraged to see Gonzalez rip a double down the right-field line Tuesday night in Colorados 7-3 victory at Minnesota.

CarGo hit a low breaking ball, Black said. He was out in front of it, but he stayed back enough to be able to drive it.

A 95 mph fastball takes aboutfour-tenths of a second to travel the 60 feet, 6 inches from the pitchers mound to home plate. At the big-league level, pitch recognition is paramount, and right now, Gonzalezs is still off.

With CarGos swing with the leg kick, the timing there is a lot that can go wrong, Salazar said. When your body moves the wrong way at the wrong time, it can make any pitch look desirable. So its easy to find yourself chasing pitches or becoming vulnerable to other pitches.

That leads to bad habits and the slump deepens.

Thats when you start to tinker with it and start questioning, and then it becomes a mental thing, Salazar continued. Thats when guys will switch batting gloves or do something to break the routine.

Gonzalez is, unquestionably, a streaky hitter.

When youre going good, its easy because you dont think about anything, not even executing, Gonzalez said. Youre just having fun. Youre going 3-for-4 and hitting homers and doubles and making diving plays and its so easy, because you are clean up here.

He pointed to his head when he said up here, knowing that his battle to produce is as much mental and emotional as it is physical.

There is a lot of psychology in baseball, said veteran first baseman Mark Reynolds, whos off to a terrific start, batting .319 with 12 homers and a 1.007 OPS (on-base percentage, plus slugging). Ive been through a lot of slumps before, so I know you have to be able to take a deep breath and know you will come out of it. If you are zero for your last 10 but you get a hit, then youre 1-for-1. Thats the way you have to look at it.

Gonzalez, 31, is in the final year ofa seven-year, $80 million contract. Hes the teams highest-paid player, collecting a $20 million salary, plus $428,571 as the final installment of a $3 million bonus. Hes playing for a new contract and chances are he wont be back with the Rockies in 2018.

But those who know Gonzalez dont think the pressure of a contract year has gotten to him.

I have seen guys in a similar situation and I would expect bad body language or attitude in this situation, Salazar said. Im not getting that from CarGo. Its been a pleasure to see the leader hes been, his work ethic and the way hes communicated through this.

He knows himself better than anybody else, so if he thinks hes about to starting hitting, then I might as well get on the train right now because I believe him.

This past regular season for the Detroit Pistonshas been described as a disappointmentplenty of times, leading to afeeling that some major changes are coming. If Andre Drummond was in charge, he would do the opposite of that.

The Pistons center told reporters he feels the franchise should stay pat during itsnew logo unveiling Tuesday, according to theDetroit Free Presss Vince Ellis.

Drummond explained that even though the team missed the playoffs with a 37-45 record this year, he feels the teams main core deserves another chance:

I dont think we need to do any changes, Drummond told reporters. We had a lot of bumps in the road last season with different things going on, and it took everybody out of sync.

The Pistons had suffered from injury issues right from the start, including losing starting point guard Reggie Jackson for their first 21 games due to knee tendinitis. Detroit had alsostruggled to gain any momentum offensively throughout the year, finishing 26th in offensive efficiency in the NBA, according to basketball-reference.com.

Drummond had a down year in 2016-17, averaging 13.6 points and 13.8 rebounds per game in 81 appearances. Both of those averages are lower than his all-star campaign the previous season. He also took about two shots less per game and had a career-low in Player Efficiency Rating with 20.9.

The veterans comments are similar to what Pistons head coach and team president Stan Van Gundy told reporters last month during the teams end of season press conference.

Van Gundy said at the time that he felt the Pistons needed to make some tweaks this offseason. He explained the roster was built with Jacksons pick-and-roll abilities in mind,but with him missing 30 games total, that never had the group they had in mind.

Drummond also feels the team needs to work on improving its chemistry together for next season. He hopes to spend time with his fellow teammates throughout the off-season:

With this summer coming up, we have to do a better job staying connected the more stuff we do together, the better our camaraderie will be, Drummond said.Right now is the most important time for our team, to rest, get ourselves together, come together collectively and come up with what we need to do together.

With Drummond appearing to take a bigger leadership role heading into this summer, it will be interesting to see how the Pistons offseason goes and if their chemistry does improve enough to get them back into the postseason.

China agrees to review US biotechnology applications – Chemical & Engineering News

China will evaluate eight pending U.S. agricultural biotechnology product applications by the end of May, potentially opening the door for sales by Dow AgroSciences, DuPont Pioneer, Monsanto, and Syngenta.

China agreed to conduct the evaluations as part of an agreement unveiled by the White House on May 12. The two countries reached the trade deal after a meeting in April between U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

U.S. officials have prodded China for years to speed up its lengthy process for deciding whether to approve the import of new genetically modified (GM) crops. It typically takes six years to win Chinese clearance of a GM variety, twice as long as other major nations take.

Under the new deal, Chinas National Biosafety Committee will meet by the end of May to assess the safety of eight products made by four major U.S. agrochemical companies.

Dow AgroSciences is seeking approval for its corn and soybean seeds, while Syngenta and DuPont Pioneer have each applied to sell a GM corn variety in China. Monsanto makes four of the products pending approval, including herbicide-tolerant corn, soybeans, and two alfalfa varieties that have been under review for nearly six years.

The Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO), an industry trade group, wants to make sure China lives up to its commitment.

The ultimate test of success will be for China to follow its process and quickly approve the eight pending biotechnology applications and establish a synchronized, timely, and predictable process going forward, says Joseph Damond, senior vice president for international affairs at BIO.

Bucks commissioners OK state award of $2 million for Pa. Biotechnology Center expansion – The Intelligencer

The Bucks County commissioners unanimously approved a $2 million state grant that will aid the expansion of the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center in Buckingham.

With their vote Wednesday, the commissioners accepted the agreement between the biotechnology center and the state, and agreed to act as the facilitator for the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP).

"Every entity that applies for the RACP grant has to have a cooperation agreement with one of the governments to move forward," said Lynn Bush, executive director of the Bucks County Planning Commission. "We are basically the go-between for the company and the state agency."

Plans have been in motion for years to add more laboratory and office space to the Biotechnology Center. The state grant and a $4.6 million federal grant will contribute to the overall costs of the project, estimated between $12 million and $13 million. The remainder willbe financed with a conventional loan awarded by Univest Bank.

"We're thrilled to continue our partnership with the biotechnology center and allow them the opportunity to grow and expand in that area," said Bucks County Commissioner Robert Loughery. "The center has become a real success story for the county and the region."

A groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion was held in April, but actual construction has yet to begin. Before work could begin in earnest, Bush said Thursday afternoon the plans need to go before the Buckingham Board of Supervisors for final land development approval.

The Biotechnology Center is credited with contributing approximately $1.8 billion to the local economy and supporting more than 700 jobs since its creation in 2007. A partnership with the Hepatitis B Foundation and Delaware Valley University started the initiative, but disagreements on the center's management ended the relationship.

The Hepatitis B Foundation bought out the university's interests in the center for $2 million in October, ending the disagreement and restarting the stalled expansion plans.

Recently, enterprise-focused Google representatives have been encouraging a metric called Relevance, which is believed to be one of the three main factors that make upQuality Score. Relevance is a metric which evaluates how pertinent your ad creative is to your account structure and keywords.

At AdBasis, we have spent Q1 speaking with enterprise-level advertisers about changes being implemented to account structures and to ad units (creative) in order to improve their relevancy scores as recommended by Google. This often means that advertisers need to implement hyper-specific ads to every ad group in their accounts.

As a result, we have seen the demand for scaled ad implementations, ad unit management and creative optimization grow dramatically. This article is designed to give you a standard for what your creative should look like within every ad group. Im going to dissect the anatomy of ad structure, showcase some best practices and provide some additional commentary.

AdWords accounts are growing larger and larger. I am not talking about overall spend I am talking about the number of campaigns and ad groups within a single AdWords account.Whether youre using Single Keyword Ad Groups (SKAGs) or something close to it, chances are the number of ad groups in your account has grown significantly. SEMs everywhere are hit with a new set ofchallenges related to this shift.

If your account has been evolving, chances are your existing creative is fragmented and unmeasurable; this is a major problem. One of the biggest challenges is the management, implementation, measurement and optimization of the associated ad units. And now, with Googles new push for extremely granular ad copy relevance, your generic ad copy will no longer work.

So, what does a high-quality search ad look like?

Just as the human body can be dissected and understood, so can your search ads. Here we will evaluate the different organs that make up a search ad and how they can be altered to improve performance. Understanding how Google will evaluate your ad copy based on keyword + search term is vital to understanding how to structure your creative in bulk.

The elements of a search ad that are most vital to determining relevance are as follows:

In order to combat the problem of fragmented and differing creative at the ad group level, standardization through dynamic ad templates across similarly behaving ad groups is a great technique.

What does that mean? It means designing ad copy templatessuch that the search term can be inserted based on the ad group, but the ad copy surrounding your search term is relevant, flexible and testable.This can be achievedusing feed-based technologies to dynamically insert ad content based on ad group or campaign.

(Im notgoing to get into tech setup since thats beyond the scope of this article, but you can learn more about generating feeds and feed-based technologies here.)

Okay, so what should your dynamic ad templates look like?

In the examples below, I willshowcase how feeds can be used to dynamically insert unique creative based on the ad group or campaign (ad group and campaign are the two levels of hierarchy to which creative can be mapped).

The highlighted text in the examplesbelow represents ad copy that is not static; it is written in a way that can be swapped out orchanged based on the needs of the advertiser and how the account is set up. Imagine the highlighted elements are changing based on your ad group.

The goal of these templates is to map search terms to specific ad groups in ways that make sense in ad copy.

The company in the examplebelow has ad groups for specific action verbs (Browse, Search, Find and so on) and Makes/Models of vehicles (e.g., Toyota, Honda, Mercedes). From this, they could create a feed of action verbs by ad group, a list of Makes by ad group, and a list of Models by ad group. These variables would change dynamically based on the content in their feeds.

As you can see, this particular ad copy template would work across hundreds or thousands of ad groups which are geared toward different keywords and Makes/Models. Youd keep the quality of your ad copy relevance and be able to measure the performance of this creative template.

Through the use of dynamic templates, e-commerce brands can implement, manage and measure ad copy in bulk. Knowing if BOGO vs. 50% Off works best for particular audiences or product categories is vital information. But often, this is very difficult to execute at scale without sacrificing ad relevance.

Here is an example of a scaled ad template that can be used by e-commerce brands. The makeup of this ad template includes an audience variable (Men or Women), product category variable (Shoes, Shirts, Pants) and discount percentage (mapped to the product category).

These elements can be shifted throughout the ad and tested across ad groups/campaigns dynamically. Generating a feed of your dynamic elements and mapping them to campaigns or ad groups is crucial to standardization and measurement of ad creative at scale.

SaaS companies are unique because often, they only offer a single product. In many instances, SaaS companies will position the same product in different ways and will segment campaigns by the value proposition someone is searching for.

This provides a unique set of challenges. Another approach to dynamic ad copy templates isnt inserting a search term, but rather entire Headlines, Pathways, Descriptions and so on.

Below, this SaaS company is dynamically inserting the Headline 1 and Description based on the ad group. This gives them the opportunity to test Pathways and Headline 2 without sacrificing the customized Headline 1 and Description theyve written.

The use of dynamic ad templates across ad groups and campaigns affords you the opportunity to test your ads in two main ways:

This approach is designed to provide SEMs with an approach that is flexible enough to test across ad groups/campaigns (implement at scale) but specific enough to deliver extremely relevant ads to all searchers. Its not an easy task, but hopefully, this article will get the creative juices flowing on what technology options are out there to help improve your ad copy relevance.

Biochemist Peter Hinkle dies at 76 – Cornell Chronicle

Peter C. Hinkle, Cornell professor emeritus of biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, died May 12 in Ithaca of pancreatic cancer. He was 76.

Widely acknowledged as a brilliant biochemist, Hinkle was an early adopter of a groundbreaking new approach to understanding the energy metabolism in cells. Though originally trained in classical biochemistry, Hinkle chose to do postdoctoral work in England with Peter Mitchell, who had postulated a new approach to how cells acquire the carbon and energy they need to grow, the chemiosmotic theory, for which Mitchell received the Nobel Prize in 1978.

The chemiosmotic mechanism postulated by Mitchell was not easily understood by those trained in classical biochemistry, but Peter Hinkle did understand and brought those ideas to Cornell where they took root, said Joseph Calvo, professor emeritus of molecular biology and genetics.

Hinkle received a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Harvard University in 1962 and a doctorate from New York University in 1967. His work with Mitchell at Glynn Research was supported by a National Institutes of Health fellowship. His scientific promise was also recognized early by a 1971 NIH Career Development Award.

After his work at Glynn, Hinkle came to Cornell as a postdoctoral fellow in 1969. He became an assistant professor in 1973, part of a cohort of new faculty hired to strengthen biology across the campus.

Peter was a valued member of our department for 44 years, said William Brown, professor and chair of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics in the College of Arts and Sciences. He was at the forefront of elucidating how cells make ATP, the energy currency of life on this planet.

Hinkle and others, including Efraim Racker, Andre Jagendorf and Richard McCarty, provided convincing experimental evidence for the chemiosmotic theory.

Peter Hinkle made a number of very important contributions to the required paradigm shift, said Calvo. He was an exacting experimentalist who had a highly developed understanding of laboratory conditions that avoided artifacts. He was asked to review many research papers and invited to meetings throughout the developed world.

One of Hinkles most important contributions was to frame the chemiosmotic theory in a way that could be understood by the greater scientific community. He published, with McCarty, a seminal article in Scientific American that included state-of-the-art drawings of ATP synthesis in plant and animal cells, emphasizing the basic similarities in the two cases. Hinkles wife, Maija, played a major role in developing the drawings. Some version of those drawings is in every biochemistry text sold today, said Calvo.

Peter and his colleagues also made very important contributions toward the understanding of how molecules cross biological membranes, said McCarty, the W.D. Gill Professor Emeritus of Biology at John Hopkins University. His lab was the first to show that the membranes of animal cells contain an embedded protein that mediates the transport of glucose across the membranes.

Hinkle became a full professor at Cornell in 1983 and served as chair of what was then known as the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology from 1985 to 1988. He taught, said Brown, legions of students in his graduate courses in bioenergetics and undergraduate courses in biochemistry, as well as his course Ethical Issues and Professional Responsibilities. In 2003, he and senior lecturer Jim Blankenship received a Faculty Innovation in Teaching grant to add web-based activities that incorporated 3-D visualization of proteins as well as interactive animations to the auto-tutorial course, Biochemistry 330.

During 1988-89 Hinkle served as distinguished visiting scientist at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology in New Jersey. He served on numerous editorial boards, most recently for the Journal of Bioenergetics and Biomembranes.

After his retirement in 2014, Hinkle pursued interests including electronic music; he incorporated bird songs into his compositions.

Hinkle is survived by his widow, three sons, four granddaughters and two brothers.

A celebration of Hinkles life will take place Saturday, May 20, at 11 a.m. in the Founders Room in Anabel Taylor Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology or to the Norwood and Cornelia Scholarship Fund at The Putney School.
