DNA tests show seafood fraud haunts iconic port

Monterey is one of California's iconic seafood spots, but that apparently doesn't mean you always get what you order at the city's eateries and grocery stores.

DNA testing in Monterey showed that that more than one-third of the seafood samples collected from 17 grocery stores, restaurants and sushi venues were mislabeled according to federal standards.

Those results were released Thursday by the international ocean advocacy group Oceana and the Monterey Weekly. The publication targeted species with regional significance and those that were found to be mislabeled from previous studies, including red and yellowtail snapper, wild salmon and sole.

Oceana had other groups have found higher rates of fish mislabeling in Los Angeles (55 percent) and Boston (48 percent), and similar rates in South Florida (31 percent). Last year, the group launched an initiative to reduce what's been dubbed "seafood fraud," in which one species is substituted for another.

The practice can undermine local fishermen and consumers' ability to make choices based on fishing practices, location and variety of seafood.

"Given how famous Monterey Bay is for fresh, local seafood, if we are seeing seafood fraud at this level, it's happening everywhere," said Geoff Shester, California program director for Oceana. He was not aware of any San Diego-specific study on the issue, though his group is testing seafood at other spots nationwide.

Oceana said the biggest surprise was the discovery that restaurants selling popular Monterey Bay sand dabs were actually selling juvenile flathead sole. None of the fish labeled as sand dabs were Pacific sand dab found in local waters, DNA tests showed.

We still dont know whether the baby flatfish sold as sand dabs came from Alaska or as the result of trawling in a local fish nursery habitat," Shester said. Either way, residents and tourists seeking this famous Monterey Bay seafood dish at a local restaurant are being duped, at the expense of local hook-and-line fishermen who can catch real sand dabs sustainably.

Former Akron police captain excluded by DNA test

New lab-test results show that DNA recovered from a murder scene in Summit County didn't come from a former Akron police captain who was convicted of killing his ex-wife nearly 15 years ago in a case that received national attention.

Douglas Prade, 66, is currently serving a life sentence at the Madison Correctional Institution, but has always maintained his innocence after being convicted in September of 1998. Prade was found guilty of shooting his ex-wife, Margo, a prominent Akron doctor and the mother of his two daughters. Margo was shot six times following a struggle in her van in a parking lot outside of her office.

They are not going to find my DNA because I didnt do it, said Prade in a prison interview with the Dispatch last year. This has always been about seeking and revealing the truth.

The DNA testing, conducted by DNA Diagnostics Center of Fairfield, north of Cincinnati, focused on the lab coat Margo was wearing during the attack and specifically a bite mark left by her killer. Testing results released today found male DNA present within the bite mark but it didnt match Prade. Further testing of the lab coat performed by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations during the past several months didnt detect the presence of other male DNA. Fingernail scrapings from Margo Prade and other items collected from the crime scene were also tested and excluded Douglas Prades DNA.

Attorneys at the Ohio Innocence Project, based at the University of Cincinnati, say the testing results prove Prades innocence and he should be exonerated. They are asking Summit County Common Pleas Judge Judy L. Hunter to set Douglas Prade free or, at the very least, grant him a new trial. A hearing in Akron to determine the significance of the new testing results is scheduled for Aug. 21.

Personal DNA Testing: What Can It Reveal?

Winning government approval would be the first step in increasing public confidence in personalized genetic testing

Earlier this week, the personal gene-testing company 23andMe announcedthat its seeking the blessing of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its DNA tests that allow people to peer into their genetic makeup.

If the FDA grants approval, it would be a major step forward for the growing industry springing up around genetic testing. Every day, it seems, scientists are reporting new gene-based discoveries that allow them to better pinpoint the causes of disease. As technology becomes increasingly sophisticated, single-gene tests are being joined by the sort of genotyping technology used by 23andMe, which scans about 1 million points on the genome that are known to vary among humans. An even more complex technique, genomic sequencing, looks at about 3 billion points that cover a persons entire genetic code. 23andMe the name is a reference to the 23 pairs of chromosomes that comprise a persons genome intends to eventually offer sequencing, but the cost starts at around $4,000, which is considerably more expensive than the $299 the company charges for its testing.

Not only is sequencing more costly, but it also uncovers a trove of data that researchers have yet to fully understand. Even among the more targeted areas of the genome that 23andMe examines, there is much information that remains murky if not elusive. Of the 1 million points we look at, theres only a fraction of those that science can tell us anything about, says Ashley Gould, 23andMes vice president for corporate development and its chief legal officer.

Since 23andMe began offering testing in late 2007, more than 150,000 people have become clients. The vast majority have been adults, although parents can give consent for their children to participate. Our goal is to get 1 million in our database, says Gould. Having more people will increase our power to conduct research. There is immense power in coming together to progress research.

The company was co-founded by Anne Wojcicki, who is married to Google co-founder Sergey Brin. Her bio on the company website explains why shes interested in personal genetics, expressing her hope that the company will create a common, standardized resource that has the potential to accelerate drug discovery and bring personalized medicine to the public. (Plus, getting access to her own genetic information and understanding it has always been one of Annes ambitions.)

The $299 fee includes processing of a saliva sample via a collection kit the company sends out. The data gleaned from the sample is shared with users via a secure website. Customers also have access to the companys ancestry features, which have helped people track down relatives. There are 242 health reports available for different conditions, enabling users to learn more about traits like freckling or eye color as well as carrier status for cystic fibrosis, for example, and risk for diseases such as Alzheimers. As new literature is published, we add new reports, says Gould.

When data reveals increased risk for certain diseases, 23andMe offers up videos that share more detailed information about that specific condition. The company also has a relationship with a nationwide genetic counseling service that users can call for an appointment.

Kaeppel's Corner: Don't Know Much Biology (but maybe just enough)

I dont know what theyre teaching kids these days. Let me rephrase that. I dont understand a lot of what they are teaching kids these days. At the end of the last school year I was thrust into action quizzing my daughter as she studied for her final exam in Honors Biology. Hey, always glad to lend a helping hand. But it got a little troubling after awhile.

Oh, dont worry, she was getting almost all of the answers correct. The problem was the unease I felt as I read the questions. For much of the time I didnt even understand the questions I was asking. I am pretty sure all of the words were in English but at one point I suddenly wondered if I was speaking in tongues.

So yes I am sad to say, I apparently Dont know much biology.

Still, in the immortal words of Lynyrd Skynyrd, I know a little bout it. And as it turns out, it might just be enough.

received his BA from Yale University in 1963, a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1967, a Doctorate in Medicine (honorary) from Goethe University in Frankfurt in 2008, and he served as a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School 1967-69.

At UCSD, Dr. Dennis has served as Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Chair of the Faculty Academic Senate, and on the Board of Overseers. He has also been a Visiting Professor at several universities and is an adjunct professor at The Scripps Research Institute.

He has authored 350 research publications, patented 15 inventions, and edited 13 books. Dr. Dennis was named an inaugural Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 1984, and was the recipient of the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biologys Avanti Award in Lipid Enzymology in 2000, the European Federation for Lipid Science and Technologys European Lipid Science Award in 2007, and Yale Universitys Yale Medal in 2008.

Patrick Dempsey Tweets 'Grey's Anatomy' Eric Dane spoiler

Patrick Dempsey Tweeted a potential "Grey's Anatomy" spoiler, regarding Eric Dane.

In the photo posted on July 30, which Dempsey later took down at ABC's request, Dane is shown unconscious in a hospital bed. In July, it was announced that the actor would be leaving the medical series next season, after six years of portraying Dr. Mark "McSteamy" Sloan.

Dane's character will reportedly to survive a plane crash seen in the season finale in May, according to TV Line, but his on-again-off-again girlfriend Lexie Grey did not. But Executive Producer Shonda Rhimes said that fans shouldn't assume anything about the upcoming season.

"When we start the season, we are ahead enough in time where we see the outcome of lots of things. And in the second episode of the season, there's rewind - we go backwards - to where they're still in the forest," told Entertainment Weekly. "So you see what happened and in the next episode, you see how we get there."

Dane has been a part of the series since its second season. Dane will reportedly be back for a number of episodes on the series' ninth season this fall to finish out the character's story arc.

"I am extremely grateful to everyone at 'Grey's,' ABC and Shondaland for the experience and memories I have had over the course of this run," the 39-year-old actor told TV Line. "It has been wonderful to work alongside and learn from a creative force such as Shonda Rhimes."

Dane is married to actress Rebecca Gayheart and the couple has two daughters together. Dane has also had roles in "Burlesque," "Valentine's Day," "Marley & Me" and "X-Men: The Last Stand."

In addition to Dane's exit, it was previously reported that Kim Raver will not return to the series next season either. Chyler Leigh, who portrayed Lexie Grey on the series, was killed in the season finale.

Season 9 of "Grey's Anatomy" premieres on September 27.

In Ethiopia, infectious diseases such as HIV, TB, and malaria are the primary health concerns which often results in less focus on congenital problems. Through the DNA Genotek Helping Hands Program, DNA Genotek will be providing OrageneDNA kits to collect DNA from saliva from study participants. DNA test results turn negative in Bella’s items

DNA test results of items owned by kidnap-homicide suspect Bella Ruby Santos showed no traces of bloodstains from slain kidnap victim Ellah Joy Pique.

The disclosure of the DNA test results by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Central Visayas (CIDG-7) caused Santos lawyer Rameses Villagonzalo to declare that the case against his client will be dismissed soon.

But Senior Supt. Jose Pante, CIDG-7 chief, said it wouldnt affect the case.

We rely more on the testimony of the witnesses, Pante told Cebu Daily News.

The DNA test results on two items seized by police confirmed that the dead body found in Barili town was that of 6-year-old Ellah Joy.

The two items, a yellow- blanket and yellow comforter, were used to cover Ellah Joys remains.

Still, Villagonzalo said the results only showed the failure of the prosecution to prove the guilt of his client.

The suppression of evidence by the prosecution is over. The truth has come out. Their efforts to mislead the public is finished, he said.

Villagonzalo said the prosecution is only giving false hope to the Pique family, who blamed Santos and her British partner Ian Charles Griffiths of being responsible for their daughters death.

DNA Test Could Help Save Scottish Wildcat from Extinction If It Still Exists

Scotland is home to a least a hundred thousand feral cats. Unfortunately, the cats that now live in the Scottish Highlands are not native to the country, and they have helped push the already squeezed native felines closer toward extinction.

The native groupthe Scottish wildcat (Felis silvestris grampia), also known as the Highland tigerisnt much bigger than your average house cat, although it has a larger tail and a reputation for wild ferocity. The subspecies probably descended from the European wildcat (Felis silvestris) between 7,000 and 9,000 years ago, roaming throughout Britain until deforestation dramatically reduced its habitat. The 19th century brought further population declines, spurred by more habitat loss, hunting for the animals fur, and persecution by livestock farmers and game bird hunters. By 1880 it existed only in Scotland.

The 20th century saw the population dwindle further. Roads and cars proved deadly; at the same time, feral and domestic cats (Felis catus) competed with the wildcats for prey and also hybridized with them, diluting their gene pool. Today the Scottish wildcat is a whisker away from extinction. An attempt to count the wild population in 2004 estimated that just 400 or so remained.

But even that number may be too optimistic. Many conservationists put the figure at 100 and some think there may be none left, Steve Piper, a wildlife filmmaker and trustee of the Scottish Wildcat Association, told The Scotsman. They are disappearing so fast they are more in peril than pandas, tigers or polar bears.

But theres still hope. Paul ODonoghue, biological sciences lecturer at the University of Chester in England, is collaborating with the WildGenes Laboratory at Edinburgh Zoo to develop a DNA test that can help identify whether a wildcat is purebred or a hybrid. ODonoghue and his team will map the wildcats genome using century-old museum samples, allowing them to determine the genetic markers of a pelage perfect specimen. This information, in turn, will help future captive breeding efforts by allowing conservationists to pair up animals that contain the most wildcat DNA. ODonoghue said the test should be ready by the end of this year.

Douglas Richardson, animal collections manager at the Highland Wildlife Park, which recently premiered two new Scottish wildcat kittens, told The Herald that saving this iconic catthe only feline native to the U.K.should be a priority. We get our knickers in a twist because the Indians arent doing all they can to protect their tigers or the Kenyans their black rhinos, but its okay for us to let this one slip through the net? I dont think so.

Of course, any captive breeding program will need to have a decent number of wildcats on hand to be successful. Of the 75 adult wildcats currently living in captivity only one shows strong signs of being a purebred, and about a dozen, including all those at Highland Wildlife Park, show at least some hybrid characteristics. The rest are clearly hybrids.

More pure wildcats might be out there: This past April camera traps in Cairngorms National Park caught sight of several wildcats, the first time they had been spotted in that area. It is not yet known if they are pure wildcats or hybrids. Despite the low odds, ODonoghue says he is hopeful that some pure wildcats will be found somewhere.

Keeping wildcats pure in the wild will remain the ultimate challenge. Conservation groups are calling for widespread neutering and sterilization of domestic and feral cats to prevent, or at least slow, any future hybridization. Weve got to act decisively and immediately, ODonoghue told The Herald. Otherwise, he says, there wont be any wildcats much longer.

Timelines, roadmaps, and tools: navigating the futures of synthetic biology

Earlier this summer I got a travel fellowship from the SynBERC Student & Postdoc Association and Practices Thrust to attend the Six Parties Symposium on Synthetic Biology. The theme of the symposium was Synthetic Biology for the Next Generation and was jointly run by the National Academies of Science and Engineering from the US, the UK, and China. The fellows were asked to write a short perspective about the symposium and how we see the field advancing in the future. Im posting my essay below, and you can see the perspectives of the other fellows here.

What is the future of synthetic biology? How do we get there? The recent Six Parties Symposium on Synthetic Biology brought together scientists, engineers, policy makers, and social scientists from the US, the UK, and China to think about the future. Panels focused on the grand challenges that we face, the potential for synthetic biology to address some of these challenges, and the toolstechnical and otherwisenecessary to see this potential through to real world applications.

Many of the presentations included timelines on vastly different scales: graphs of rising global temperatures in the past hundred years and graphs of carbon dioxide levels extrapolated out to 12,000 AD; graphs of the exponentially increasing computer processing power in the past fifty years, the exponentially decreasing cost of sequencing and synthesizing DNA in the past ten, and the rapidly increasing number of students participating in iGEM over the past five. Connecting these different timelines, harnessing growing communities and improving technologies to address complex and large-scale environmental problems is the focus of a different kind of timelinethe technology roadmaps that set out goals and timeframes for problem solving and industry development in synthetic biology.

But to advance the goals of synthetic biology, first we have to decide on what synthetic biology is, what the goals are, and what is necessary to actually reach those goals. Synthetic biology is a combination of engineering and biology, interpreted and defined in many ways but often in contrast to traditional biology fields. One of the many such definitions of synthetic biology discussed at the symposium was that synthetic biology reverses the genotype to phenotype link; while research in genetics and molecular biology aims to understand how a cells genotype leads to an observed phenotype, synthetic biology begins with a desired phenotype and seeks to design the corresponding genotype. The complexity of biological systems and the context-dependence and stochasticity inherent in how phenotypes emerge from genotypes complicate efforts to design functional synthetic networks, but also provide a useful metaphor for thinking about the futures of synthetic biology.

Like the connections between genotype and phenotype, the connections between the roadmaps and the futures that they aim to predict are complex, context-dependent and involve much more than just efficiency and technical feasibility. Indeed, the tools that synthetic biology has focused on in the past decade have always been both technical and socialprinciples like standardization are encouraged to enable streamlined engineering but also to promote collaboration and open-source development. The symposium, with talks from people working in academia, industry, IP law, environmental advocacy, law enforcement, and government foregrounded many of the issues that complicate the path from roadmaps to futures, including the politics of science funding, the economics of fossil fuels, the reward structures for academic researchers, the educational programs available for interdisciplinary training, risk assessment, regulations, media representations and public perceptions.

Given the complexity of factors influencing the funding of and research in synthetic biology, its no surprise that there are almost as many proposed futures as there are definitions and technical standards for the field (like opinions, everyone has one). As Nikolas Rose warned during a panel on social issues involved in synthetic biology, Too many roadmaps means you dont know where youre going. How can we keep from getting lost? How do we get a future that we want? Who gets to decide?

Perhaps the diversity of goals and the diversity of approaches can be a strength rather than a weakness. Synthetic biology alone cant solve any of our grand challenges, and synthetic biology cant develop in a vacuum, isolated from all non-technical factors. The range of voices and perspectives at the symposium reflect the kind of community necessary to understand problems and to craft sustainable solutions.

Susan Henry wins prestigious award in lipid biochemistry

Susan Henry, professor of molecular biology and genetics and the Ronald P. Lynch Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) from 2000 to 2010, won the 2013 Avanti Award in Lipids, according to the August issue of the magazine of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, ASBMB Today.

The award recognizes outstanding research contributions in the area of lipids, naturally occurring molecules that are structural components of cell membranes involved in energy storage and signaling. Henry is noted for her research on regulation of lipid metabolism and lipid-mediated signaling, using yeast as a model system.

A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Microbiology, Henry is also past chair of the National Institutes of Health Advisory Committee on Research on Minority Health.

As part of the honor, Henry has been invited to present a lecture at the 2013 ASBMB Annual Meeting, which will be held in Boston in April 2013.

Ivan Dikic will receive the William C. Rose Award 2013 FRANKFURT. Prof. Ivan Dikic, Head of the Institute of Biochemistry II and Director of the Buchmann Institute of Molecular Life Sciences at the Goethe University Frankfurt, was awarded with the William C. Rose Award 2013, as announced today by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

With this Award, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology recognizes outstanding contributions of Ivan Dikic to biochemical and molecular biological research and in particular his pioneering work in understanding the Ubiquitin Code that regulates multiple biological processes. The Award consists of a plaque and 3.000 US$ and will the awarded at the Annual Meeting in Spring, 2013, where Prof. DIkic will be invited to present his research.

Ivan Dikic has been working at the Medical Faculty of the Goethe University in Frankfurt since 2002. More then 10 years ago, he started to concentrate his work on the Ubiquitin Research. Prof. Dikic showed that Ubiquitin acts as a multivalent cellular signal recognized by an expanding number of binding proteins that in turn translate this molecular signal into appropriate cellular phenotypes. His group have identified several novel Ubiquitin binding domains and used structural and functional studies to demonstrate their roles in the regulation of DNA repair, inflammation, receptor endocytosis, and proteasomal degradation. Despite their biological relevance, modern-day tools to study Ub chains in their physiological environment remain rudimentary and mainly focus on the biochemical characterization of chains, substrates or ubiquitin-binding domains (UBDs). Lately, Ivan Dikics group described the development and in vivo application of highly versatile chain-specific Ub sensors.

Setting IT User Policies That Work

The wave of new age technologies that are invading the enterprise hasspurred the debate on who sets IT user policy and how organizations cancontrol it. Richard H. Thaler, a Professor of Behavioral Science and Economics, in his paper- "Test, Adapt, Learn: Developing Public Policy with Randomised Controlled Trials" cites two principles that help policymakers create good policies that work for normal people:

- If you want to encourage some activity, make it easy.

- You can't make evidence-based policy decisions without evidence.

"These are exactly the principles that CIOs should apply when making decisions and rolling out a workforce technology, be it a social business and collaboration strategy, hardware refresh, tablet deployment, teleworking strategy, desktop virtualization program, or anyother technology program that touches a lot of employees," writes Ted Schadler, Vice President, Principal Analyst at Forrester Research in hisblog.

Be it full-fledged enterprise mobility or accessing corporate e-mail over the phone, there needs to be a specific set of rules and guidelinesincorporated in the user policy that defines who gets to do what, when and where. The conversation titled ' Who Sets IT User Policy? A CIO Power Panel Discussion' at the Computerworld IT Roadmap event held across the three cities of Bangalore Mumbai and Delhi threw up multiple points of view on the ownership of the policies, the implementers and how to gain maximum compliance.

While creating an effective IT user policy falls under the domain of IT, Sudhir Reddy, CIO, MindTree believes that it is not the sole responsibility of IT. "While a large portion of the responsibility restson the shoulder of IT, policy building is a very collaborative and consultative effort," he says.

Sunil Mehta, Sr. VP & Area Systems Director- Central Asia, JWTconcurs, "User policies cannot be developed by IT in isolation and willhave to be a consultative process with the departments involved. IT cannot the big daddy of the organization and dictate terms for everything".

The development of user policy is a balancing act since there are internal stakeholders other than the CIO within the organization and there are customers and external partners. Ranga Raj, CIO, CelStream states, "Organizations need to look at what makes sense keeping in mind the strategies of all parties involved".

Once the user policies are built collaboratively it needs to be communicated to the employees in an easily understandable format. The onus of ensuring user compliancedoes rest with IT. "Even though the development of the policy is a consultative effort, IT still owns it. There will be instances where IT will have to put its foot down and decide the course of action," says Guruprasad Murty, VP-IT & IS, Microland.

Mehta feels that, as the custodian of corporate data, it becomes the responsibility of IT to create the user policies in a way that the users are motivated to follow the guidelines. "We crunch our policies into 5 action points and send those to users along with the detailed policy document that is attached for their reference," he adds.

Cooking, veggie display contests highlight end of Nutrition Month in Basilan

ISABELA CITY, Basilan Without cooking and vegetable booth display contests, the Nutrition Month observance is meaningless, said Maria Jennesa S. Tubongbanua, Isabela City nutrition action officer .

The city highlights veggie cooking and vegetable booth display contests at the end of celebration of the 38th National Nutrition Month.

Twenty of the 45 barangays in the city participated in the vegetable display contest. The veggie booth of Aguada Barangay got the nod of the judges and was awarded best booth.

This year, the different city department heads, including units of the Philippine National Police, will compete in the veggie cooking contest.

Government employees displayed their cooking abilities in preparing nutrition-rich meal that is cost-efficient and palatable, most especially for kids.

The entry from the Provincial Police Office won first place with their vegetable barbeque (stir-fry mix vegetables with barbeque sauce).

The recipe of ginataang kalabasa at sitaw with bulad, and kalderay won second and third places, respectively.

In her message, Isabela City Mayor Cherrylyn Santos-Akbar urged the public to plant vegetables in their backyards, as she anchored her message to this years theme, Pagkain ng Gulay Ugaliin, Araw-araw itong ihain.

She reiterated the benefits of eating vegetables and encouraged parents to make it a daily habit to serve kids with vegetables.

Almost one in three of the worlds poorest children cannot reach their full potential due to malnutrition. As the Olympics close, Prime Minister David Cameron, will call on the world to take the action needed to transform the life chances of millions of children before the next Olympic Games in 2016.

A central part of Londons successful bid for the Games has been the legacy it will create for Britain reinvigorating one of the poorest parts of the country and inspiring a whole generation of young people. We hope that this event on the closing day of the Games will mean that London 2012 also has a lasting legacy for millions more children around the world by improving their nutrition and giving them the opportunity to fulfil their potential too.

The spirit of the Olympics is about athletes from all over the word striving to achieve their potential. But for around 170 million children today, their potential will already be limited by the time they are two years old. Stunting, the result of a prolonged poor dietor infection in early childhood, affects growth and physical ability. Stunted children may do less well at school and go on to earn less. Intervening in the first 1,000 days from the start of pregnancy can stop poor nutrition leading to permanent damage.

A range of highly cost-effective direct actions can help ensure that children get the right nutrients their bodies need to develop (such as preventing and treating vitamin deficiency). Ensuring people get enough food, clean water, better sanitation and education for mothers and children are vital too.

Generating the political will and leadership to address malnutrition is an even greater challenge. Countries which have taken concerted action to reduce under-nutrition have shown remarkably fast rates of reduction. Brazil, Peru, Thailand and China are among these.

The UN Secretary General recently challenged us all to create a world free from stunting. A new global target to reduce the number of stunted children by 40% by 2025 has been agreed by the World Health Assembly. The Scaling up Nutrition (SUN) Movement, to which 28 countries have now signed up, is developing the framework for monitoring progress against stunting targets. The G8 New Alliance on Food and Nutrition Security is committed to supporting SUN in the scale-up.

On 12 August, Prime Minister David Cameron will challenge global leaders to step up efforts to improve nutrition and reduce the rate of stunting among the worlds poorest children between now and the next Olympics in 2016.

The Global Nutrition Event will help to strengthen these commitments by identifying pioneering new ways of working to tackle malnutrition and bringing in new champions to support the global movement.
