FEI Announces New Tecnai Arctica TEM for Structural Biology Research

HILLSBORO, Ore., Jan. 30, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- FEI (FEIC) today announced the availability of its Tecnai Arctica(TM) transmission electron microscope (TEM) for structural biology research. The Tecnai Arctica incorporates sophisticated automation, pioneered on FEI's flagship Titan Krios(TM) TEM, to elucidate the three-dimensional (3D) structure of biological macromolecules and molecular complexes. With the addition of the Tecnai Arctica, FEI now offers a portfolio of structural biology workflows to accommodate a broad range of facilities and budgets.

The Tecnai Arctica is specifically designed for structural biologists who are focused on increasing productivity and reducing cost-of-ownership. The system's high throughput and easy-to-use, highly-automated workflow, combined with its lower acquisition cost, minimize the overall cost of analysis per structure.

"Most proteins act together with other proteins in multi-molecular complexes, and understanding relationships between structure and function within these complexes is the key to understanding all living systems," said Peter Fruhstorfer, vice president of FEI's Life Sciences Business. "Traditional tools, such as X-ray diffraction and nuclear magnetic resonance, are limited to certain classes of molecules. Cryo TEMs, like our Titan Krios, and now the Tecnai Arctica, can look at virtually any molecule or complex of molecules in a native, fully-hydrated state. We believe that the role of cryo TEM in structural biology analysis, which has expanded dramatically in recent years, should continue to grow at an accelerating rate as instruments like the Tecnai Arctica TEM make the technology accessible to a wider range of researchers."

Much of the recent progress in cryo TEM-based structural analysis uses a technique known as single particle analysis (SPA), which combines images of tens or hundreds of thousands of nominally identical particles to derive a high resolution, low noise, 3D model. The particles are first rapidly frozen in physiological solution to preserve their native structure. The Tecnai Arctica is part of a tightly-integrated, start-to-finish workflow, comprising cryo-sample preparation, data acquisition and analysis and final visualization, which greatly enhances the speed and efficiency of analysis. Its cryo-sample autoloader, combined with automated target identification and low dose imaging, enable unattended acquisition of large SPA data sets that are practically impossible to acquire with manual methods. Its streamlined user interface and extensive automation of routine operations and set up procedures significantly lower the threshold for operator expertise.

"FEI's Tecnai TEMs are a well-proven platform with over 1,000 systems deployed globally in life sciences, materials science, nanotechnology, semiconductor and data storage applications. While the Tecnai is one of our most widely-used TEM platform, The Titan Krios remains the leading TEM for structural biologists who require the highest resolution over the broadest range of samples for advanced analytical techniques, such as electron tomography," added Fruhstorfer.

20 Months HRT - Abby: Overcoming inner Transphobia, Acceptance, Moving forward
Responses to questions on trans-community, the gender spectrum, and the gender binary vs. a medical issue. Question 1. Is the "Trans Community" a community? Of course any group of people who share a characteristic, may lack any other thing in common. However I hear from many Trans folk, a lot about their notion of community and who on the "Gender Spectrum" is part of the community, Answer 1 (AO): My primary communities are comprised of people in recovery from addiction and spiritual practices. I do participate in Ingersoll gender center on occasion, mostly as a show of support and to share my experiences. However, I do not identify as trans-anything. That raises the ire of some. I identify as a woman with a birth defect that is the result of chromosomes and possibly abnormalities during the first trimester of fetal development. That seems the direction of what little medical research has been done and is consistent with my experiences on HRT as well as experiencing myself as a woman. I do know some that identify as transgender, specifically as trans-woman and trans-men. I do not criticize that at all. For them, their trans experiences are central to how they identify in society. In contrast, I identify foremost as a woman in our society, albeit with a birth defect called transgenderism. For me, it has much more to do with hopes for the AMA and medical treatments than diagnosis as a psychological identity by the APA. Question 2. "Gender Spectrum" I have found TSs often ...

Report: A-Rod, others linked to Miami PED clinic

Alex Rodriguez, Gio Gonzalez, Nelson Cruz and Melky Cabrera are among the baseball stars treated at a South Florida clinic where, according to a report in Tuesday's Miami New Times, they received performance-enhancing drugs.

Related: MLB statement | Rangers statement | A-Rod and Gonzalez deny allegations

Records taken from Biogenesis, an anti-aging clinic near the University of Miami, reportedly show those players and many other athletes -- all of whom have connections to South Florida -- received various substances from Anthony Bosch, the head of the clinic, who is already under investigation by MLB and DEA.

Bosch, 49, was previously linked to the banned PEDs implicated in Manny Ramirez's 2009 suspension. Bosch disappeared suddenly last month and the clinic was closed, according to Tim Elfrink, the Miami New Times reporter who spent three months on the story.

Elfrink notes in the New Times report he was given patient records by a former clinic employee, and followed up with extensive interviews with other former employees and clinic customers.

Here's a snippet of Elfrink's findings regarding the Yankees' superstar third baseman:

There, at number seven on the list, is Alex Rodriguez. He paid $3,500, Bosch notes. Below that, he writes, "1.5/1.5 HGH (sports perf.) creams test., glut., MIC, supplement, sports perf. Diet." HGH, of course, is banned in baseball, as are testosterone creams.

That's not the only damning evidence against A-Rod, though. Another document from the files, a loose sheet with a header from the 19th Annual World Congress on Anti-Aging and Aesthetic Medicine, lays out a full regimen under the name Cacique: "Test. cream... troches prior to workout... and GHRP... IGF-1... pink cream."

[snip]

The mentions of Rodriguez begin in 2009 and continue all the way through last season. Take a page in another notebook, which is labeled "2012" and looks to have been written last spring. Under the heading "A-Rod/Cacique," Bosch writes, "He is paid through April 30th. He will owe May 1 $4,000... I need to see him between April 13-19, deliver troches, pink cream, and... May meds. Has three weeks of Sub-Q (as of April)."

Report: A-Rod among players treated at PED clinic

UPDATE: Anthony Bosch's lawyer has responded, via the Associated Press:

"Mr. Bosch vehemently denies the assertions that MLB players such as Alex Rodriguez and Gio Gonzalez were treated by or associated with him," she said.

Minneapolis Plastic Surgeon Introduces Bee Venom Facials to Her Practice

EDINA, MN--(Marketwire - Jan 29, 2013) - A new rejuvenation technique known as the bee venom facial has piqued the interest of patients seeking facial treatments all across the United States. Already popular in countries such as Great Britain, New Zealand, and Australia, the bee venom facial utilizes actual venom from a bee's sting to provide a mild inflammatory effect, ultimately resulting in smoother facial lines and wrinkles. Dr. Jess Prischmann, a fellowship-trained facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, has recently adopted the technique into her Minneapolis facial plastic surgery practice and says bee venom facials can be a great option for patients seeking a non-invasive, natural facial treatment.

As the only practice in Minneapolis to offer the new facial, Dr. Prischmann says she is excited to add such a unique and natural treatment to her repertoire. She feels it is a great alternative for patients who are reluctant to try more invasive treatments, such as chemical peels, BOTOX Cosmetic, or fillers. The natural bee by-product is spread across the face as a mask eliminating any need for medicated injections. Dr. Prischmann says icons like Kate Middleton as well as others from all over the world have had success with the organic treatment, adding that its anti-aging effects can produce more radiance and tighter, firmer skin.

Anti-aging results can often be attributed to slight facial inflammation due to the skin's defensive reaction to the venom, says Dr. Prischmann. To avoid a severe reaction, all patients opting to receive the treatment undergo a patch test to determine if they have an allergy to bee venom. If no allergy is detected, the Minneapolis facial plastic surgeon says the facial is considered to be a safe and effective rejuvenation technique that can be repeated for optimal results. Dr. Prischmann adds that patients interested in receiving a bee venom facial or any other facial plastic surgery procedures should always consult with a fellowship-trained surgeon. She says fellowship-trained surgeons have the knowledge and expertise necessary to provide the most advanced and ethical procedures.

About Jess Prischmann, M.D.

After graduating from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine, Dr. Jess Prischmann completed a head and neck surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She is a published medical author and received the highest score in the country on the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Examination in 2011. Dr. Prischmann is a member of many prestigious medical organizations including the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, among others. She is also board-certified in the field of head and neck surgery.

Prischmann Facial Plastic Surgery is located at 5201 Eden Avenue, Suite 170 Edina, MN 55436, and can be reached at 952-567-7151. Dr. Prischmann can also be contacted online at mnfacialplastics.com or facebook.com/mnfacialplastics.

Stem Cells May Provide Major Anti-Aging Breakthroughs

Recently, stem cells have been identified as potentially the biggest breakthrough in the beauty industry. Dr. Simon Ourian of Epione Beverly Hills sees great potential in stem cells' ability to reverse the signs of aging.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 29, 2013

Dr. Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Medical Corporation in Beverly Hills sees great potential in the use of stem cells for cosmetic purposes. With more research," he says, "I expect well uncover a plethora of uses for stem cells in preserving the appearance of youth.

Anti-aging treatments are already among the most popular elective procedures performed around the globe and billions of dollars are spent every year on cosmetics and topical creams. While admitting that the science is still not conclusive, some physicians have reported excellent results with fat injections, the idea being that fat contains the human bodys largest reservoir of adult stem cells and growth factors.

Im a proponent of evidence-based medicine, says Dr. Ourian, "and Ill wait to see what truly works before I offer it to my patients. I do believe, however, that stem cells will be at the forefront of our treatments in the near future. The possibilities are endless.

Other scientists are extracting stem cells from plants and animals for use in creams and cosmeceuticals. Its important to note that the majority of creams on the market contain growth factors and not live stem cells because the technology to keep stem cells viable in that state does not yet exist.

Stem cells may prove to be a major feature in the development of beauty treatments and it appears we are only at the beginning of this revolution.

Epione offers a number of cutting edge aesthetic treatments. Please see their website for more information about these treatments and the use of stem cells in anti-aging treatments.

Stem Cell Therapy Helps Stroke Victims Recover in Two Weeks

The rats completely recovered from a stroke within two weeks with stem cell therapy (Wiki Commons)

Stem cell therapy administered shortly after a stroke could significantly increase the sufferer's chance of a complete recovery.

When administered to rats within 30 minutes of suffering a stroke, the rodents made a full recovery within two weeks, a study showed.

The research, published in BioMed Central's open access journalStem Cell Research & Therapy, found that stem cells from the bone marrow of fat can improve the recovery of rats following a stroke.

Researchers at La Paz University Hospital found that treatment improved the amount of brain and nerve repair, as well as the animal's ability to complete tasks.

Rats were treated intravenously with stem cells half an hour after a stroke. In humans, such rapid response is known to dramatically improve the outcome of victims.

The researchers found improvements in the stem cell group within 24 hours of the treatment, compared to the control group.

The FAST response advertising campaign has aimed to increase awareness of symptoms. Facial and arm weakness and speech problems suggest it is time to call emergency services.

Human trials

A delay in treatment can result in death or long-term disabilities. A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off.
