Synthetic biology: Engineering a new frontier

Most people look at the cedar in Drew Endy's front yard and admire its graceful green boughs, heavy with needles, sap and cones.

Endy sees something much different: an industrial manufacturing platform, waiting to be exploited.

"I dream we could someday reprogram trees that could self-assemble a computer chip in your front yard," exudes the brilliant and intense Stanford University scientist, who has emerged as a leading evangelist in the new field of synthetic biology.

One gene at a time, Endy and other elite teams of Bay Area scientists are striving to design and build organisms unlike anything made by Mother Nature.

It's not yet possible to create artificial life from scratch. But it's getting closer, through projects that essentially swap out a cell's original operating system for a lab-designed one. These made-to-order creations then can be put to work.

The Human Genome Project gave us the ability to read nature's instruction manual -- DNA -- like words in a book. But the real opportunities, scientists say, lie in our ability to not only read genetic code, but to write it, then build it using off-the-shelf chemical ingredients, strung together like holiday lights. It is the creation of new genomes -- and a new frontier in bioengineering.

This presages the distant day when Endy's big Menlo Park cedar churns out computer chips, not cones. Or makes cancer-fighting drugs. Or fuels. Or building materials. Or anything else.

There are concerns about safety and ethics. In the wrong hands, lone villains or rogue regimes could unleash dangerous life forms. A review in 2010 by a White House commission concluded the field needs monitoring, but the risks are still limited.

Synthetic biology is different from genetic engineering, which simply inserts a gene from one organism into another.

Predictive Neuroscience: Facts, Fictions, and Fears of Scanning Brains and Reading Minds
Presented by James Giordano, PhD. In this lecture, neuroscientist and neuroethicist Professor James Giordano PhD, addressed the provocative current - and near future - capacities and limitations of neuroscience, and argues for analyses and guidelines to establish how to engage brain research in ways that are scientifically and technically rigorous, and ethically and legally sound. Neuroscience is increasingly viewed as having potential to identify predispositions to types of cognition, emotion and behavior. Could it be employed to allow preemptive interventions to deter the commission of crimes? For sure, this has overtones of the science fictional film Minority Report. But as distasteful as this seems at face value, the recent shootings in Connecticut, Oslo, Phoenix, and Columbine, and instances of international terrorism have prompted calls to use neuroscience to "do something" to ensure that such events do not happen again. A crucial question is, how to maximize the benefit of the tools we possess, while not over-stepping the boundaries of science or corrupting ethico-legal probity? Just because we may not currently have the neuroscientific capabilities to predict thoughts or behaviors doesn #39;t mean we #39;re not on a path toward doing so - or at least trying. Therefore, it #39;s important to understand exactly "where we really are" and estimate the validity and value of both our current position and the destinations we seek. We must be aware of agendas to employ neuroscience ...

Guthrie Test – Video

Guthrie Test
My weekly Guthrie blood test (for Maple Syrup Urine Disease). MSUD is an inherited genetic disorder, passed down from two non-affected #39;carrier #39; parents. The worldwide incidence is somewhere between one in 185000 and one in 250000. MSUD disrupts the metabolism of three components of protein called branched chain amino acids (or BCAA; individually named Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine). Because of this metabolic blip individuals have to strictly monitor and control their diet, lifestyle and biochemistry, as well as avoid alcohol and certain types of medication. This stops the BCAA levels building up inside the body, thus maintaining health. If the BCAA levels get too people with MSUD become life-threateningly ill, as well as the urine, ear wax, breath and sweat smelling of Maple Syrup (usually how the disorder is diagnosed in infants). The only out-and-out cure for symptoms of MSUD is a liver transplant, but the person will still be a carrier and have to watch for rejection/take immunosuppressants for life. The best place in the world for metabolic transplants - the Children #39;s hospital in Pitsburgh, has a 90% success rate in liver transplantation. However, this is a procedure which I do not feel would be right for me at this time, and therefore I continue to follow my management protocol. Didn #39;t mean this to be the first video, hence saying it #39;s #39;Laura again #39; at the start!

Hormones for health

Hormones are of vital importance for good health, both in men and women.

HORMONES are vital to our health. They instruct our cells to do important metabolic functions. Too much or too little hormones can cause cells and organs to malfunction. Since our organs are not independent of one another, any upset in one system will soon affect many or all other organ systems.

There are many hormones that regulate the body. Of these, about a dozen need to be monitored and fine-tuned if you want to be really healthy.

Unfortunately, the role of hormones has not been properly understood by many doctors. This is reflected in the fact that when you do your comprehensive medical check-up, the blood tests will only include one hormone (TSH or FT4).

How can the doctors give an accurate assessment of your health when they dont even check the other important hormones?

Anti-ageing doctors, on the other hand, will investigate at least 10 other hormones to have a better estimation of the state of the body, and to be able to optimise these hormones should they be at sub-optimal levels.

Other doctors have written about the subject, but I would like to share my perspective on this.

How important are these hormones? And how do they function? Let me give three illustrations:

Insulin

On the first day of the fasting month, most Muslims who fast get very tired, and their productivity at work suffers. Then at breaking-fast time, just a glass of syrup water or air bandung will recharge and revitalise them. Of course, they get used to the fasting in the next few days.

CORRECTION FROM SOURCE: Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board Continues to Engage with Stakeholders

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb 13, 2013) -

This document corrects and replaces the press release that was sent today at 10:29 a.m. EST.

Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board members were in Winnipeg, Manitoba, from February 6 to 7 to meet with registered retailers and suppliers to discuss their views on the Nutrition North Canada (NNC) program.

"The partnerships with retailers and suppliers are a very important part of NNC as their feedback enables us to deliver the program more effectively," said the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. "The Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board continues to play a key role in communicating the views of Northerners and other stakeholders to the Government of Canada."

The Advisory Board met with retailers and suppliers to hear their views on how the NNC program is operating and on what could be done to ensure that the communities they serve continue to benefit fully from the NNC subsidies and the greater supply chain flexibility that it supports. The Board also heard from officials with the Government of Manitoba and community nutrition workers who presented a number of successful nutrition projects using Nutrition North Canada funds. The Board also met with officials from the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, representing First Nations in Northern Ontario.

"Board members heard first-hand from retailers, suppliers and community stakeholders about the positive impact NNC is having on communities," said Wilfred Wilcox, Chair of the Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board. "We continue to learn from individuals who are pivotal to the operation of the Nutrition North Canada program and this helps us to better fulfill our role of providing advice to guide the management and activities of the program."

The Advisory Board first met with retailers and suppliers in February 2012. Retailers and suppliers provided early insights on how the program was operating and also offered suggestions for the future operation of the program. As part of the NNC program, accountability measures for retailers and suppliers are in place to ensure that the NNC subsidy is being passed on to consumers.

Members of the NNC Advisory Board represent a wide range of northern perspectives and interests. They meet several times a year in person and by teleconference and have held public meetings in Iqaluit, Nunavut; Kuujjuaq, Quebec; Norman Wells, Northwest Territories and most recently, Nain, Labrador.

Bluewave: Hydrolyzed fish protein set for US sports nutrition splash

New sports nutrition product launches containing a new hydrolyzed fish protein are imminent, says Bluewave Marine Ingredients as it brings its branded AminoMarine ingredient to market.

As NutraIngredients-USA first reported several years ago , advances with membrane technology allowed Bluewave to produce fish protein isolated that meets both the organoleptic and economic requirements for the broader food ingredient/ supplement marketplace.

The membrane system works by having one stream enter and three streams exit. The main stream is separated into a high fat plus protein stream, a zero fat plus protein stream, and a biogenic fraction. The fishiness is removed by the membrane, since it removes the oil and fat.

Mark Rottmann, COO for BlueWave Marine Ingredients, told us that, after several years of development, the company is now ready to offer the hydrolyzed fish protein for the sports nutrition market.

The protein offers a complete profile of the essential amino acids, he said, and the price is competitive with standard whey, with the added benefit that AminoMarine is hydrolyzed. It is at a discount compared with hydrolyzed whey, he added.

Arnold

Californias Genomyx will launch the first dietary supplement for sports nutrition containing the ingredient at the upcoming Arnold Expo in Columbus, OH .

Armando Lopez, Genomyxs CEO, told NutraIngredients-USA that the company is proud to work in conjunction with Bluewave Marine Ingredients to bring their AminoMarine to the marketplace.

In working so closely with the developer of this hydrolyzed fish peptide product, Genomyx can claim to offer the purest and cleanest protein option available; a fat- and oil-free option also devoid of manmade antibiotics, hormones, and any genetic modification(s).
