Maharashtra has managed to improve the health of its children as significantly lesser number of children under the age of two years is stunted, a latest UNICEF report has said.

The first-ever State-wide nutrition survey done in 2012 to assess the progress and identify areas for future action to improve the health of the children indicated that prevalence of stunting in children under two years was 23 per cent a decrease of 16 percentage points over a seven-year period.

Results of this Comprehensive Nutrition Survey in Maharashtra suggested progress was associated with improvements in how children were fed, the care they and their mothers received, and the environments in which they lived.

From 2005-2006 to 2012, the percentage of children, aged 6 to 23 months old, who were fed a required minimum number of times per day increased from 34 to 77 and the proportion of mothers who benefited from at least three antenatal visits during pregnancy increased from 75 to 90 per cent.

More than 60 million children under 5 years are stunted in India, comprising almost half the children in this age group. They represent an estimated one-third of stunted children worldwide.

In Maharashtra, 39 per cent of children under the age of two years were stunted in 2005-2006. But by 2012, according to a State-wide nutrition survey, the prevalence of stunting had dropped to 23 per cent. The States determined actions and focus on service delivery contributed to this dramatic decline, said the UNICEF report Improving Child Nutrition: The achievable imperative for global progress.

In 2005, in response to reports of child deaths from under-nutrition in a number of districts, the State launched the Rajmata Jijau Mother-Child Health & Nutrition Mission. It was initially focused on five primarily tribal districts with the highest incidence of child under-nutrition (Amravati, Gadchiroli, Nandurbar, Nasik and Thane). But after the National Family Health Survey of 20052006, the Missions mandate was expanded to coordinate efforts to reduce child under-nutrition throughout the State. The Mission was extended to 10 additional districts with a substantial concentration of tribal populations in 20062007 and finally to the remaining districts in 20082009.

The State Nutrition Mission began by working to improve the effectiveness of service delivery through the Integrated Child Development Services and the National Rural Health Mission, the national flagship programmes for child nutrition, health and development. Their focus was on filling vacancies in key personnel, particularly front-line workers and supervisors, and on improving their motivation and skills to deliver timely, high-quality services in communities.

In the second five-year phase, beginning in 2011, more emphasis was placed on improving the nutrition of children under two years and their mothers. This shift was made in response to global evidence about the critical 1,000-day window to prevent under-nutrition in children.

The provisional results of the Maharashtra survey showed that in spite of more frequent meals, only 7 per cent of children 623 months old received a minimal acceptable diet in 2012. Too few children are being fed an adequately diverse diet rich in essential nutrients with the appropriate frequency to ensure their optimal physical growth and cognitive development. A State-wide strategy to improve the quality of complementary foods and feeding and hygiene practices is essential to further reduce stunting levels.

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Members Evaluate Existing Evidence on Umami in Foods

WASHINGTON, April 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --The addition of umami compounds or foods rich in umami, allows for reductions in sodium content of foods without sacrificing taste, liking and pleasantness, according to a review of the existing evidence conducted by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The resulting reduction in sodium may vary depending on the type of food consumed, as well as the amount and type of umami compounds present. Overall dietary intake of sodium was not evaluated in these studies. Based on the scale used by the Academy, the overall strength of the available evidence supporting this finding was "Grade I" or "good." (Grade I= good; Grade II = fair; Grade III = limited; Grade IV = expert opinion; Grade V, not assignable).

"Umami is the lesser known basic taste, in addition to salty, sweet, bitter and sour," said Kristi Crowe, PhD, RD. "It's only fairly recently that we in Western societies have come to understand umami, which is present in broths, aged cheeses, tomatoes and other products that contain glutamate, a common amino acid and protein component."

Monosodium glutamate (MSG), the sodium salt of glutamate and produced through fermentation of molasses, is widely used around the world as a seasoning or flavor enhancer. It is classified as "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. But for decades, there have been questions and confusion about the presence of MSG in foods and its connection with umami as a basic taste sensation. "The purpose of the Evidence Analysis Library (EAL) project was to help Registered Dietitians understand the facts about umami and MSG, both from a science and culinary perspective," Crowe explained.

The EAL further reported that based on the existing evidence, in healthy adults, four studies showed inconsistent results on the presence of reactions after ingestion of monosodium glutamate (MSG). In children or adults with chronic urticaria (two studies) ingestion of MSG did not worsen symptoms. In adults with asthma (two studies), ingestion of MSG did not worsen symptoms. (Overall strength of the available supporting evidence, Grade II = fair.)

The microbial population in the air of the New York City subway system is nearly identical to that of ambient air on the city streets. This research, published ahead of print in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology, establishes an important baseline, should it become necessary to monitor the subway's air for dispersal of potentially dangerous microbes. Also, the combination of new methodologies in the study, including fast collection of aerosols and rapid sequencing technology, provide an efficient means for monitoring which was not previously available.

The results "are strong testimony for the efficiency of the train pumping system for ventilation," says principal investigator Norman R. Pace of the University of Colorado, Boulder. The wind one feels while walking across a subway grate as the subway clatters beneath also demonstrates just how effective that system is, he says. The only obvious differences in the subway's microbial population are the somewhat higher proportion of skin microbiota, and the doubled density of the fungal population, which Pace suggests may be due to rotting wood. "I was impressed by the similarity of [subway] and outdoor air," he says.

The researchers used a high tech mechanism to collect air at around 300 liters per minute (L/min), a big jump on the previous state of the art, which swallowed 12 L/min. That enabled collecting sufficient volume of aira couple of cubic metersto take the bacterial census within 20 minutes, instead of after "hours," says Pace. And analysis by sequencing is far faster and more thorough then using culture.

Pace notes that until now, the microbial content of subway air was unknown, and that the microbiology of indoor air is an emerging field of scientific inquiry. His research was funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, through its Microbiology of the Built Environment program, which has made 64 grants totaling $28 million to date.

"While it is difficult to predict what will be discovered on the frontier of scientific inquiry, the opportunity exists to better understand these complex microbial ecosystems and how they affect health and the environment. We expect that someday this knowledge will influence design and construction practices and other industrial processes," says Paula Olsiewski, program director, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Fremont native and Cedar Bluffs High School graduate Jodi Kreiling recently was honored by the University of Nebraska at Omaha Alumni Association.

She was one of nine honored with an Alumni Outstanding Teaching Award. Recipients receive a $1,000 award and a commemorative plaque.

Kreilings teaching expertise is in general chemistry and biochemistry. An associate professor, she joined the UNO faculty as a chemistry department member in 2005. She has designed a new biochemistry course concerning Protein Purification and Characterization. Kreiling also supervises undergraduate researchers concerning projects related to improving the Biochemistry lab curriculum or projects concerning protein-protein interactions/protein structure-function. She has served her department, the university, community and profession in numerous capacities, including membership on the deans advisory committee.

Kreiling also is a courtesy faculty member in the department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where she earned a Ph.D. in 2005. Kreiling received a bachelor of science in biochemistry from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1999.

Scott Napper, a biochemistry professor at the University of Saskatchewan, is proposing a research experiment inA Saskatoon professor trying to promote science among students is starting to get snotty about the whole thing.

Scott Napper, a biochemistry professor at the University of Saskatchewan, is proposing a research experiment in which subjects would pick their noses and then eat it, according to the Canadian Press.

He says this type of experiment, that's funny and enlightening, is a great way to make people curious about science.

Funny for the guy who's not picking his snot.

Napper also seeks to find out if children's occasional habit of eating boogers might be helpful, in a sense, because it could teach their bodies to better fight off the germs they consume.

He told the Canadian Press he would choose one type of molecule to place in subject's noses and then divide them into two groups: nose pickers who eat it and those who don't.

Volunteering before the groups are assigned would require a certain special kind of bravery. Call it goo guts.

An Austrian doctor was cited as saying that picking your nose and eating it is healthy in news stories that circulated widely several years ago. However, follow-ups have not yielded any medical studies supporting his claim.

An associate professor of biochemistry at the University of Saskatchewan is trying to get more students interested in science by looking at the health benefits of picking your nose and eating it.

Scott Napper says nature pushes us to do different things because it is to our advantage to have certain behaviours, to consume different types of foods.

Napper says mucous traps germs and stops them from getting into our body, but if we consume that mucous, it could help train our immune system by exposing it to the germs.

So he says when children have the urge to pick their nose and eat it, parents shouldn't get upset.

Napper says he hopes to conduct a study where some type of molecule is inserted in people's noses and then half the participants pick their nose and eat it and the other half don't.

"I think the challenge would be getting volunteers to participate in this experiment," he says with a laugh. "Especially if you didn't know which group you were going to fall into."

Napper also says making science more humorous and fun keeps students interested and engaged.

"I don't try to convert them all to biochemistry. My goal is always if I can teach you one thing that you're going to tell somebody else about outside the scope of this class, then I've prompted you to think a little bit, to question these things and I think with this example, it probably succeeded in that."

Napper has two young daughters and says the idea of letting them pick their noses, even if in the name of science, didn't go over well with his wife.

Andy Karplus, professor of biochemistry and biophysics, explains the enormously scaled up model of a protein structure.

Andy Karplus, a professor in Oregon State Universitys department of biochemistry and biophysics, will deliver this years F.A. Gilfillan Memorial Award lecture, speaking about his work with identifying protein structure.

Karplus received the award in September and will deliver a lecture on Tuesday at the LaSells Stewart Center Construction and Engineering Hall. A reception will take place at 6:15 p.m. with the lecture to follow at 7:15 p.m.

Karplus studies protein structure and function, using X-ray crystallography to find out the exact positions, in space, of every atom in a protein molecule, Karplus said.

Proteins are too small to see with microscopes. Instead, scientists, like Karplus, use X-ray crystallography to determine protein structure, which is important for understanding protein function, as proteins are involved with the active aspects of life like metabolism and muscle contraction, Karplus said.

Using the information from X-ray crystallography, Karplus is able to construct physical and computer models of proteins.

There are lots of drug development projects, which refer to our work, and a lot of research that was actually in part stimulated by our research in terms of figuring out new ways, for instance, that cells become cancerous and some ways that cell growth and development are regulated, Karplus said.

An associate professor of biochemistry at the University of Saskatchewan is trying to get more students interested in science by looking at the health benefits of picking your nose and eating it.

Scott Napper says nature pushes us to do different things because it is to our advantage to have certain behaviours, to consume different types of foods.

Napper says mucous traps germs and stops them from getting into our body, but if we consume that mucous, it could help train our immune system by exposing it to the germs.

So he says when children have the urge to pick their nose and eat it, parents shouldnt get upset.

Napper says he hopes to conduct a study where some type of molecule is inserted in peoples noses and then half the participants pick their nose and eat it and the other half dont.

I think the challenge would be getting volunteers to participate in this experiment, he says with a laugh. Especially if you didnt know which group you were going to fall into.

Napper also says making science more humorous and fun keeps students interested and engaged.

I dont try to convert them all to biochemistry. My goal is always if I can teach you one thing that youre going to tell somebody else about outside the scope of this class, then Ive prompted you to think a little bit, to question these things and I think with this example, it probably succeeded in that.

"Meron akong mga friends na yung mga anak nila underwent stem cell therapy. And yung condition nila is just like Josh's and they're special children. Sobrang laki kasi yung naging improvement," Kris said on "KrisTV" on Tuesday, April 23.

Physical exam

Kris said Josh will have a physical exam on April 24 to check if he is fit to undergo stem cell therapy.

"Hindi mo naman matatanggi sa akin na anything to improve my son kasi ngayon na-achieve namin yung physical improvement. Kasi di ba naka-lose nga siya ng 120 pounds? So ngayon we have the means naman, bakit hindi ko susubukan kung makakatulong ito for him to become more verbal, yung cognitive skills lalong ma-improve?"

She added, "Meron raw sa Singapore na kinukuha rin sa nanay, yung stem cell. Manggagaling raw sa fat ng nanay. Kasi yung fat ng nanay ang highly-concentrated ang stem cell. So kukunin either sa tiyan or hita ng nanay then itatransfer sa anak."

ABS-CBN announced that Kris will take a leave from work in June to attend to her sons' needs, including bringing Josh abroad "to advance his developmental progress."

Adult Josh

"Iyan ita-try nating lahat kasi it's so hard to believe that this June 4, Josh is turning 18. May adult na akong anak. Ita-try natin ito. Part of the reason why I'm taking a leave is because I want Josh to have these opportunities for medical improvement, lalo na andun na siya sa magandang timbang, magandang health, magandang behavior. MANILA, Philippines Host-actress Kris Aquino explained that one of the reasons she is going on temporary leave from showbiz is because she wanted her eldest son, Josh, to undergo stem cell therapy.

During her morning talk show on ABS-CBN, Kris TV, on Tuesday, Aquino said she is considering three options for the treatment of Josh, who is a special child.

The first option is for Josh to undergo treatment in Europe, where live animal stem cells are used.

Kasi meron akong mga friends na yung mga anak nila underwent stem cell therapy and yung condition nila is just like Josh. They had special children, Aquino explained to comedienne Melai Cantiveros, her guest co-host on Kris TV.

Kasi sobrang laki yung naging improvement. So tomorrow, Melai, meron kaming appointment kay Dr. Rex Gloria, who is involved with one of those hospitals sa Europe na gumagawa nito, she added.

Aquino said her second option is to avail of a new treatment in Singapore, which involves the use of fat-derived human stem cells.

Meron daw sa Singapore na kinukuha daw sa nanay yung stem cell. Parang manggagaling sa fat ng nanay, kasi yung fat ng nanay ang pinaka-highly concentrated yung stem cell, doon, she said. So kukunin either sa hita daw o sa tiyan ng mom, tapos ita-transfer doon sa anak.

Meanwhile, Aquino said her third option is to go to The Medical City in Pasig.

May pangatlo pa being done in Medical City naman now. But that study will be done in July. Yun naman, galing sa bone marrow. Medyo masakit daw yun talaga kasi imagine, bone marrow extraction, she said.
