Politically incorrect team names

The debates about the name of the Washington Redskins and the team logo arent going away anytime soon. In fact, regardless of what happens with that franchise, people are going to constantly be complaining about other team names, finding something offensive. Often times, they gasp at straws in search of something to be offended by.

For example, a couple years, students at a high school in Utah voted on the Cougars as their mascot, only to have it rejected by the school board who said the name is offensive to middle-aged women. Yeah, Im so sure thats exactly what a group of 14-18 year old boys on the football team were naming themselves after. Its so ridiculous and couldnt be more obvious that they were naming themselves after the animal.

Perhaps we should just throw out animal names altogether. If someones offended by the name cougars, surely there plenty of things to find offensive about other animal team names. Maybe the animal rights activists will complain about all the animal team names before too long.

Many animals are violent, and violence isnt a message we want to send to our youth. Just imagine how much more peaceful this world would be if young fans in Detroit gathered together to watched their beloved Detroit Dandelions.

Violence represented in the name is the reason the Washington Bullets changed their name to the Washington Wizards. When you think about it, the name Wizards might not be such a great idea either because they use witchcraft and things of that nature which we should all steer away from, and in a way, that could fall under our next category: religion.

In todays world where we have to be so politically correct and careful not to offend someone by forcing our beliefs and our religion onto others, perhaps we should get rid of names that might imply theres a higher power, good or bad. So Angels, Devils, (and anything with the word Devils such as Sun Devils, Blue Devils) Demons, Saints, Padres and others have to go.

So now weve eliminated teams with names representing animals, violence, race and religion so whats next? What about team names which represent natural disasters? Millions of people have suffered loss due to Hurricanes, tornadoes, lightning strikes and so on and we dont want sports to serve as a memory for such tragic times so those names should probably be gone as well.

Names of different people groups ought to be eliminated as well. Most of the Houston Texans arent real Texans. Its not nice to call someone a Canadian if theyre not one so the NHLs Montreal Canadiens should also find a new name and the same goes with the Yankees.

People group names can also fall under the violence category. Cowboys had guns. Pirates, vikings and buccaneers were extremely violent.

Im sure there are a number of teams that come to your head that dont necessarily fall under these categories but if theres any question about how their names might be offensive, we probably shouldnt use them.
