The Redding Rancheria, a tribal gaming operator based in Shasta County, Northern California, has received the federal all-clear to move its Win-River Resort and Casino a couple of miles to the east.

The casino is within the tribes reservation, just outside the town of Redding. And while it will not be moving far, its causing a lot of controversy up in Shasta County.

Since 2016, the tribe has sought to tear down the existing casino and rebuild a significantly enlarged version on a plot of land it owns called Strawberry Fields. But because the new location was not part of its reservation, it needed approval from the US Interior Department.

That arrived on July 1 when the departments Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) agreed to take the land into trust for the tribe. Thats the process by which the federal government partially removes land from the jurisdiction of the state and converts it into sovereign tribal land, a prerequisite for tribal gaming.

The tribe hopes its now a case of Strawberry Fields forever. But Redding Rancheria CEO Tracy Edwards told local CBS affiliate KRCR-TV that she was bracing for lawsuits challenging the land-in-trust decision.

The casino expansion is fiercely opposed by a group calling itself Speak Up Shasta! (SUS!), and others. The group claims the new casino would spoil agricultural land, exacerbate traffic, and threaten native wildlife in the Sacramento River.

SUS! also argues Strawberry Fields is the site of the Sacramento River Massacre of 1846, in which hundreds of Wintu people were killed by a group of settlers, although this claim is disputed.

The Rancheria wants to build a 70,000-sq.-ft. casino and nine-story, 250-room hotel, along with event, retail, and convention and space. The complex would be triple the size of the existing casino.

It hopes the development will benefit from greater footfall because of its proximity to Interstate-5. This, along with the creation of new jobs, will boost the local economy, the tribe says.

But in February, another opposition group called the California Land Stewardship Councilsued the Shasta County Board of Supervisors.

The lawsuit argued that an agreement signed by the county board to help fund law enforcement, fire, and emergency services for the new casino was illegal because it gave away millions of dollars of public funds.

In a statement this week, the tribe noted that the BIAs monumental decision included nearly two decades of comprehensive expert analysis into the environmental, economic, and social impacts of our proposed casino relocation project.

South Korean casino industry prepping to hold off latest Japan competition – iGaming Business

The newest casino resort in South Korea, Mohegan Gamings Inspire, could help the local gaming industry fend off competition from Japan writes Marjorie Preston. A researcher says the industry needs a promotional push, too.

Long before Singapore, Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut defined the integrated resort (IR) concept.

The second largest IR in the U.S., behind WinStar World Casino in Oklahoma, Mohegan Sun opened in 1996. It offers a mind-boggling mix of gaming and non-gaming attractions: two casinos, two luxury hotels, a sprawling retail district, dozens of food-and-beverage outlets, plus clubs, spas, pools, and 375,000 square feet of meeting space.

Now the tribal gaming powerhouse is showing Korea how its done. Its $1.4bn Mohegan Inspire in Incheon, South Korea officially debuted in March. It is being called the new model for IRs in the country, and part of the governments plan to boost international tourism from 11 million to 20 million visitors per year.

It couldnt come soon enough for the market, which is bracing for competition from Japan. In 2030, MGM Osaka, a project of MGM Resorts International and its Japanese partner, financial services firm Orix Corp., will open Japans first legal casino. Just 90 minutes away by air, MGM Osaka will be vying for the same pool of international customers.

Before Inspire, other Korean casino resorts laid claim to the IR label. Paradise City, also in Incheon, opened in 2014 with a hotel, theme park and meeting and convention facilities. Jeju Shinhwa World on Jeju Island, in operation since 2018, is a Marriott property with a hotel, theme park and water park.

Inspire has raised the stakes. The property has three hotel towers, a 15,000-seat multi-purpose arena, the nations largest ballroom, a glass-domed water park and a massive outdoor entertainment park.

But Osaka will bring formidable competition. Set on Yumeshima Island in Osaka Bay, host destination for the 2024 World Expo, the $8.5bn megaresort will feature three lavish hotels, 730,000 square feet of conference and exhibition space, a retail district, entertainment venues and a Japanese cultural museum spanning 700 acres. MGM President and CEO Bill Hornbuckle says it will bring MGMs wow DNA from Las Vegas to Osaka.

In a recent Korea Times opinion piece, Osaka research scientist Yang Hyung-eun said now is the time for Korea to step up its game. He claims the country has waited too long to advance its IR industry, emphasizing regulation over promotion. He called for a white paper to lay out strategy ahead of MGM Osaka.

Yang says Japan gaming will pose a significant threat to Korea, which could be amplified if the Japanese government licenses additional IRs. (Nagasaki tried and failed to win one of three available licences, but Tokyo is often mentioned as a possible location.)

The innovation of the Korean casino industry begins with a shift to the integrated resort industry policy in terms of future growth, the researcher wrote. Now is the time for a future vision and philosophy for the South Korean casino industry.

Meanwhile, Inspire, which launched a soft opening in November 2023, is already making its mark. According to the New London Day, in the fiscal year that ended March 31, it contributed $35.9m of a record $461.7m in net revenue for the Mohegans. CBRE analysts say it could achieve positive cash flow by early 2027.

At Inspires grand opening last March, Mohegan Gaming President and CEO Ray Pineault said the IR near Incheon International Airport will set a new benchmark in hospitality and entertainment, welcoming guests from around the globe.

Hopefully, it will also bring them back to Korea, even after Japan opens for business.

L.L. Bean has just added a third shift at its factory in Brunswick, Maine, in an attempt to keep up with demand for its iconic boot.

Orders have quadrupled in the past few years as the boots have become more popular among a younger, more urban crowd.

The company says it saw the trend coming and tried to prepare, but orders outpaced projections. They expect to sell 450,000 pairs of boots in 2014.

People hoping to have the boots in time for Christmas are likely going to be disappointed. The bootsare back ordered through February and even March.

"I've been told it's a good problem to have but I"m disappointed that customers not getting what they want as quickly as they want," said Senior Manufacturing Manager Royce Haines.

Customers like, Mary Clifford, tried to order boots on line, but they were back ordered until January.

"I was very surprised this is what they are known for and at Christmas time you can't get them when you need them," said Clifford.

People who do have boots are trying to capitalize on the shortage and are selling them on Ebay at a much higher cost.

L.L. Bean says it has hired dozens of new boot makers, but it takes up to six months to train someone to make a boot.

The company has also spent a million dollars on new equipment to try and keep pace with demand.

Some customers are having luck at the retail stores. They have a separate inventory, and while sizes are limited, those stores have boots on the shelves.

Founded in 2003 by Craig Martin, Classic Albums Live takes the greatest albums of all time and recreates them live on stage. Forgoing costumes and impersonations, Classic Albums Live concentrates solely on the music.

Disco Inferno, 8 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Grand Ballroom, Ballys Atlantic City.

The ultimate disco party will be held at the casino with nonstop hits by ABBA, Gloria Gaynor, Michael Jackson, KC and the Sunshine Band, Donna Summer, the Bee Gees, Anita Ward, Barry White and more.

After the event ends, an after party will be held at Phils Carousel Bar with disco music all night long, plus specialty cocktails and random appearances by the Disco Inferno cast.
