Sports betting approved at Ocean Downs Casino in Berlin – Ocean City Today

Posted: November 25, 2021 at 12:39 pm

Sports betting is officially greenlit at Ocean Downs Casino.

According to a wire story from The Center Square, the Maryland Sports Wagering Application Review Commission approved in-house sports betting licenses for five Maryland casinos, including the Berlin gambling facility, on Nov. 19.

Ocean Downs General Manager Bobbi Sample said in an email that John Martin, the director of the Maryland Lottery & Gaming Control Agency, has estimated that the casinos that were approved by the lottery commission and awarded by the application review commission including Ocean Downs will be up and running with in-person sports wagering within 30 to 45 days.

He has also estimated that online sports wagering in the state will be available roughly six months after the brick and mortar facilities are open, she said.

The Center square story said the other four casinos approved for licenses last week, out of the 30 cleared to apply, were Horseshoe Casino, Live! Casino in Hanover, MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill and Hollywood Casino in Perryville.

The approvals come on the heels of pressure from Gov. Larry Hogan to launch sports wagering in the state as soon as possible. Maryland is losing revenue to neighboring states that already have both in-house and mobile sports betting in operation.

Its clear to me the public wants casino gambling, they want sports wagering, Committee member Randy Marriner said during last weeks meeting. I think its our duty to do the job. Every day that we dont pass ... the state of Maryland is losing revenue because those gamblers are going to West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware D.C. and not only doing sports wagering but while theyre there theyre spending money in the casino.

Not everyone was on board with the approvals, though.

The Center Square story said that because no minority- and women-owned businesses have their applications ready for approval, two committee members were leery of approving the other licenses.

It would be in our best interests if, for no other reason but for perception only, to wait until some of these other applicants have been vetted by the lottery commission and so when it comes to our commission we now have a more diverse population and we are approving these licenses at the same time, Committee member Cassandra Stevenson said.

She and member Frank Turner voted against the approvals.

Voters approved sports betting in Maryland last November, and lawmakers ironed out the details during the 2021 session. The legislation allows 60 online operators and 30 retail sportsbooks including casinos, professional sports stadiums, small businesses and others to obtain licenses.

Ocean Downs applied for an A-2 license, which carries a $1 million application fee as well as costs for background investigations.

Officials initially hoped to launch sports betting operations in time for the start of the NFL season, but the timeline was pushed back.

BOSTON (SHNS) On Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, Gov. Deval Patrick put pen to paper and made casino-style gambling a reality for Massachusetts. A decade later, the vision for expanded gaming has not been fully realized yet, players have pumped more than $25.6 billion into slot machines alone, almost 5,000 people are working in the casino industry here and the state has raked in nearly $1 billion in gaming revenue.

In the years since Patrick signed the expanded gaming law, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission has organized itself, installed rigid and detailed rules to tightly regulate the industry, licensed three properties and managed their construction, and now oversees the Plainridge Park Casino slots parlor in Plainville, the MGM Springfield resort casino and the Encore Boston Harbor resort casino in Everett.

But state regulators have not yet issued (in fact, they have rejected a bid for) the third casino license authorized by the 2011 law, meaning that the promise of job opportunities and economic development remains unfulfilled for Bristol, Plymouth, Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket counties.

Relatedly, gambling in Massachusetts has not lived up to the $300 million annual state revenue figure that casino proponents trumpeted a decade ago in the run-up to legalization.

Expanded gaming in Massachusetts, for me, is about creating jobs; good jobs at good wages for people all across the commonwealth. Its really, to me, as simple as that, Patrick said just beforesigning the billin his office 10 years ago. Its not the solution to every economic challenge we face and it wont be the cause of every social ill that we in the commonwealth together have to deal with.

Plainridge Park Casino won the laws lone slots parlor license in February 2014 and opened its doors on June 24, 2015. MGM Springfield was next, securing the Western Mass. or Region B license in June 2014 and opening Aug. 24, 2018. Encore Boston Harbor in Everett landed the high-demand Greater Boston or Region A license in September 2014 and opened the $2.6 billion facility on June 23, 2019.

The three gambling outlets now employ 4,860 people either full- or part-time (3,396 at Encore Boston Harbor, 1,124 at MGM Springfield and 340 at Plainridge Park Casino), according to each facilitys most recent quarterly report to the Mass. Gaming Commission. All three have been actively hiring as the casinos rebound from their forced closure early in the pandemic and then months of COVID-related restrictions.

The Gaming Commission rejected a Brockton-based bid for the southeastern Mass. or Region C license in 2016 and has not seriously considered reopening the bidding in that region, despite the argument from city officials that a casino would help turn around the citys economic fortunes by providing new jobs.

Since it opened, Plainridge Park Casino has generated a cumulative $456.28 million in state revenue from more than $931.1 million in gross gaming revenue. Of the roughly $11.86 billion that bettors have put into the Plainville slots, Plainridge has paid out 92.14 percent as winnings, making theirs the most player-friendly slots in the state.

MGM Springfield has taken in $695.25 million in gross gaming revenue since it opened about $521.6 million from slot machines and $173.66 million from its table games generating $173.8 million for the state. Gamblers have bet about $6.2 billion at MGMs slots since they opened, but data on total table game wagers is not available for either casino.

Though it opened almost a year later, Encore Boston Harbor has already eclipsed MGM Springfield in most categories. The Everett casino has collected more than $1.16 billion in gross gaming revenue $608.39 million from slots and $554.1 million from table games which works out to about $290.62 million for state coffers. More than $7.54 billion has been wagered at the Encore slots.

As of last week, Plainridge has 1,019 active slot machines; MGM Springfield had 1,597 slot machines, 52 table games, 15 stadium gaming seats and 13 poker tables; and Encore Boston Harbor had 2,674 slot machines, 189 table games and 54 stadium gaming seats, according to the Gaming Commission.

In all, Massachusetts has collected about $920.71 million in state revenue from gaming since June 2015. The three properties currently average roughly $22.2 million in state revenue each month, which puts them on pace for roughly $266.4 million in annual state revenue shy of the $300 million estimate that casino backers cited during debate on Beacon Hill.

Patricks signing ceremony in 2011 capped off years of debate that saw Beacon Hill falter time and again amid widespread controversy about the implications of expanded gaming and an inability among legislative leaders and governors to align their priorities.

The collapse of negotiations between the governor and legislative leaders on the final night of formal business before the 2010 election cycle set the stage for private, closed-door talks among the governor and legislative leaders early in 2011, which led to a pre-negotiated bill that passed easily in both chambers of the Legislature (118-33in the Houseand 23-14in the Senate).

Of the 47 lawmakers who voted against casino gaming in 2011, 20 remain in the Legislature (Reps. Balser, Dykema, Garballey, Garlick, Malia, Peake, Pignatelli, J. Rogers, Ferguson and Smola, and Sens. Brownsberger, Chang-Diaz, Creem, Eldridge, Finegold, Jehlen, Keenan, Montigny, Rodrigues and Senate President Spilka).

The News Service reported at the time that Patrick was joined for the bill-signing by House Speaker Robert DeLeo, Sens. Jennifer Flanagan and Richard Ross, and Reps. Brian Dempsey, Kathi-Anne Reinstein, Russell Holmes and Joe Wagner. Only Holmes and Wagner are still in office.

By the time Massachusetts made casino gambling legal, the Lottery had already been around for 40 years and had become an important source of money that the state could use to provide local aid to cities and towns. The expanded gambling law required casino operators to partner with the Lottery to sell its products at gambling facilities in an attempt to protect some of that local aid source.

Ive been telling the casinos, Bring it on,' Treasurer Deborah Goldberg, who oversees the Lottery, said in a June 2015 radio interview. Were going to win.

For all of the hand-wringing over whether casinos would harm sales of scratch tickets and draw game numbers, the Massachusetts Lottery has posted some of the best financial results in its history since casinos have opened here.

The Lottery set records for revenue ($5.827 billion), profit ($1.105 billion), prize payouts, commissions and bonuses for retailers, scratch ticket sales and Keno sales in fiscal year 2021, topping its previous highs established in fiscal year 2019. Even amidst the pandemic, fiscal year 2020 saw the Lottery post what at the time was its third-best year in terms of revenue.

Now, 10 years after casino gambling was made legal in Massachusetts, Beacon Hill is grappling with the idea of further expanding gaming here this time to include legal sports wagering.

The Massachusetts House overwhelmingly approved sports betting legalization in July, but the Senate has never truly engaged on the topic and has not appeared interested in doing so even though senators have not publicly expressed outright opposition to the idea.

If sports betting becomes legal in Massachusetts as it is in more than 30 states including neighboring Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire and New York, it is widely expected that the Gaming Commission would add the activity and industry to its regulatory portfolio.

I think this is going to be the issue that were going to be all dealing with in the very near future, Gaming Commissioner Brad Hill, who voted in favor of sports betting this summer as a state representative, said last week.

Amid surging COVID-19, Detroit casinos reinstall mask mandates – The Detroit News

Posted: at 5:07 pm

If you want to gamble, Detroit's three casinos would prefer you do it with your cash, not your health.

MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino Hotel and Greektown Casino have reinstalled mask mandates, effective at noon Tuesday, after the state last week issued a recommendation, but not a mandate, for everyone over the age of 2 to be masked up indoors amid a surge of COVID-19 cases.

MGM Grand Detroit and MotorCity Casino Hotel made announcements on their websites and via emails to customers. An operator at Greektown Casino said it, too, is bringing back the mask mandate, and a spokesperson confirmed the decision.

"MGM Grand Detroit remains committed to the health and safety of our guests and employees," David Tsai, Midwest group president for MGM Resorts International, said in a letter to casino guests Monday night. "To prepare for your visit, please wear a face mask at all times unless you are actively eating or drinking.

"As we approach the holidays, we hope you stay well and wish you a healthy and happy holiday season. I look forward to welcoming you back safely on your next visit."

The three casinos are requiring the masks regardless of vaccination status.

All casinos provide masks to customers who don't have one.

"Face masks must be worn by customers, associates, and other visitors," MotorCity said in a statement.

The mask mandates for the casinos include hotel guests who are in public spaces. At MotorCity, masks will not be required for customers attending banquets or events at the Sound Board theater.

Detroit mayor Mike Duggan applauded the moves, which were voluntary.

"What private companies are doing makes great sense," he said Tuesday. "If I were running a casino, I'd do the same thing."

Detroit's three casinos shut down for several months, starting in March 2020, amid the early wave of COVID-19, missing out on hundreds of thousands of dollars in profits. They reopened in December, with strict health measures in place, including mask mandates and no more smoking indoors. Mask mandates were lifted in June, and most customers haven't worn them since. The smoking ban has remained.

The three downtown casinos reported $114.1 million in revenues for October, with the state taking in $9 million in taxes and the city of Detroit $13.8 million. In the same period, Michigan's online gaming and sports betting operators reported $134 million in gross receipts, with nearly $21 million in taxes going to the state and nearly $6 million going to the city of Detroit. Online gaming in Michigan was legalized in January.

Why casinos are outlawed in Brazil sponsored – The Rio Times

Posted: at 5:07 pm

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL In terms of size and population, Brazil is the largest and most populated country in Latin America. It is spread over three million square miles and has an estimated 212 million people. Considering this very large population, it is expected that the Brazilian economy should be in good progress.

However, Brazils GDP has reduced significantly due to the economic recession that began in 2015. This made Brazil drop from her position of sixth largest economy to twelfth largest economy. A lot of countries with large populations like Australia have so many citizens gambling daily.

This is not the case with Brazil and this has spurred lots of questions about the prohibition of casinos in Brazil. Interested in the reasons why casinos are outlawed over there? Keep reading for more amazing discoveries.

THE GOVERNMENT ONLY ALLOWS GAMES OF SKILLS AND NOT GAMES OF CHANCE

One of the major reasons why casinos are outlawed in Brazil is because the government only allows games of skill and not games of chance. The rationale will be properly understood after understanding what games of chance and games of skill mean.

Chance games are games in which the winner or loser is solely dependent on luck. However, Brazils law permits skill-based games since their outcomes are strictly determined by the actions of the players.

From the definitions, its evident that casino gambling falls under games of chance. Hence, casinos are outlawed in Brazil. However, some forms of gambling recognized by law are permitted in Brazil.

Horse race betting is also one of the few forms of gambling allowed in Brazil, which is regulated by laws amended in 1984. Nonetheless, it is considered illegal to conduct horse race betting if it is done by unlicensed operators. Law No. 9,099/95 deems games of chance to be misdemeanors punishable by small fines (Article 61).

Hence, a minor penalty of up to and not more than two years may be imposed on those who participate in games of chance.

Gambling is considered a distraction for citizens and a fraudulent instrument for companiesSince 1946, when the last casino permit was canceled, gambling has been prohibited in Brazil. Several scholars have suggested that Brazils gambling prohibition resulted from the countrys industrialization, as labor unions wanted free men to devote more of their time to work rather than leisure.

However, there is a widespread perception in Brazil that gambling activities serve as a cover for money laundering and that they are financed by criminal organizations. This is due to the widespread availability of bingo halls, slot machines, and Jogo do Bicho in Brazil despite the general prohibition currently in place.

Nonetheless, these convictions are no longer common in Brazil, and Brazilians now look for alternative casinos to gamble at, especially online where theres a lot of fun to find if you look at foreign sites. Exactly because of the ban on various casino-related games, the Brazilian people now have a tendency to resort to alternative, foreign sites, where security is not always paramount.

If youre tempted to seek out a casino game outside the countrys borders, it is especially important that you find a platform like https://www.americancasinoguide.com/, where theres a selection of safe and trustworthy sites. Moreover, there are more casinos looking to welcome Brazilians and people with no gambling market in their territories. Hence, Brazilians still enjoy playing at top offshore casinos with friendly bonuses that boost their winning chances.

Mobile Experience:

Of course, since were reviewing mobile casinos, they should offer either an app or website that is easy to use and fully optimized for different screens and operating systems.

Were not looking for a watered-down version of the desktop website. We want to find those casinos that offer the same features both on desktop and mobile. Also, we take into consideration the developing efforts some mobile casinos have made to provide players with an app of course, if the app is good.

Games:

There are many things to consider about games, such as the number of table games, card games, live casino lobby, and other categories. But they should also be varied and allow for a wide range of players to have fun.

Some extra points are given to casinos that offer demo versions of their games. We appreciate that this will enable you to check whether you like the games or not before playing for real money.

Bonuses:

What do these casinos offer in terms of bonuses and promotions? Moreover, are these actually good, or just marketing ploys to get you to spend your hard-earned money?

We analyzed whether the offered bonuses provide any substance and also the terms and conditions to check whether theyre fair or not.

Payment Methods:

An important consideration is whether youre able to play or not, given the payment methods you use.

A good casino should offer many banking options suitable for different kinds of players. Extra points go to mobile casinos that provide cryptos and other innovative payment methods.

Super Slots offers incredible value for all players. Dont let the name fool you: slots here may be super, but the other games arent short of this adjective either. They offer blackjack, table games, and video poker. Theres also something thats missing on many other mobile casinos: not one, but two live casino sections!

They say their payment method list is among the longest ones in the industry, and thats not an understatement. Whether you use credit cards, cryptocurrencies, wire transfers, or bank checks, they indeed got you covered. In addition to 15 deposit options, they have 8 withdrawal methods, and what we really like about this area is that they offer same-day payouts.

What about bonuses? Well, does a $6,000 bonus sound good? Or how about a 400% crypto bonus on your first cryptocurrency deposit? Yes their bonus section is extensive and offers incredible value. They range from seasonal promotions (such as a Halloween slot tournament they organize in you guessed it October) to daily and weekly specials.

Last but not least, even though they dont have an app, their website loads fast and looks perfect on many different screen sizes and devices. The gaming sections and menus are easy to top on and clear, as is everything else.

If dogs are mans best friends, Red Dog Casino may very well be the players best friend. In a nice twist, their site is narrated from Reds point of view, a dog that only wants to offer you a great gaming experience.

Do they deliver? Indeed they do. Their mobile app is excellent, straightforward to use, and compatible with Android and iPhone.

On top of that, they also developed an app for Windows users, so you can install the casino on your computer without using your web browser. Although this doesnt entail mobile experience, we really liked this feature.

However great their app is, they are a bit lacking in the game department. They dont offer many games: their slot section is more extensive than the others, but there is just a handful of roulette, blackjack, and other table games. These are, however, all good-quality games, which makes up for the unimpressive amount.

Red Dogs welcome bonus is attractive since it offers a 225% bonus on your initial deposit. If you make a deposit using Bitcoin, you even get 20% on top of that. But whats even more interesting is their 24/7 Bonus. This is a promotion that gives you a deposit match from 120% to 160%. Its a really rewarding bonus that not many other casinos offer.

Cafe Casino offers a solid experience and even articles about online gambling, tips, and more, which can be great for beginner players.

They have an incredible 250% welcome bonus, which is one of the biggest ones weve seen. On the other hand, if you deposit with BTC, you can even get a 350% match. It doesnt end there: they offer daily giveaways, friend referral bonuses, and Cafe Casino Perks.

They have a rather lovely selection of games, and we counted more than 150. There are everyones favorites such as slots, roulette, blackjack, baccarat, and many others. The games work well on both mobile and desktop versions, so youll encounter no issues here. The only thing we wouldve wished for is a better live dealer section.

Though there are other casino sites with more payment options, Cafe Casinos strength lies in cryptocurrencies. Not only do they offer deposits in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Bitcoin Cash, but the bonuses are also tailored to crypto users, as we mentioned before. Its a great way to cater to players willing to gamble with their cryptos.

Slots Empire offers quite a large selection of slot games, but table games are not very populated. Games are also categorized in a not-so-conventional manner, which can be confusing. For instance, blackjack is separated from the rest of the table games. And then, one version of roulette is under Specialties, whereas another is under Table.

The website looks fantastic both on mobile and on your desktop computer, and its very simple to use. You choose the type of game by tapping on the category and then you can select the game. Its as simple as that.

Their bonuses are okay as well, but other sites offer more varied promotions. The welcome bonus is the best one at Slots Empire, offering 245% on your deposit and 55 free spins.

Ignition is a nice-looking mobile casino thats suitable to play on any device. The games are varied, but there arent many of them.

Their payment options are serviceable, but not the best ones around. They only offer credit cards, two cryptos, and a couple more choices. Depending on the method, there are also maximum deposit amounts. This can make funding your wallet a bit cumbersome.

There are many bonuses, including a 200% deposit bonus, and the Refer-a-friend program is great: If you bring a casino buddy to Ignition, youll be rewarded by a 200% match on their first deposit up to $100.

Slots.lv is an online casino focusing unsurprisingly on slots. While their slot selection is not one of the biggest ones around, it still has a lot of variety. Theres also a relatively small list of other games such as poker, roulette, and specialty games.

Even though there is no dedicated Slots.lv mobile app, their site works well on many devices and screen sizes, so we dont think youll have issues playing on your phone or tablet.

The bonuses are more exciting than the number of games: 200% on your first deposit, then 100% on the eight following ones. This is a great way to reward both new and recurring players.

There is also a great rewards program, MySlots Rewards Program, that accumulates Reward Points as you play games. They can be redeemed for cash bonuses.

Even though theres nothing really wild about Wild Casino youll find pretty regular casino games here it still manages to impress us.

Their mobile website is straightforward to use and has similar features as the regular browser version.

They admittedly dont have a wide range of games, but the games they offer are varied and cover all casino favorites such as slots, roulette, blackjack, and more. Another important feature is that they have two live casinos to play at.

Bonuses are where they really shine. They have a 250% welcome bonus on the first deposit, 100% on the next four deposits, weekly rebates, VIP reloads, daily specials, monthly prizes, and more. Be sure to check their bonuses often because they offer a lot of value for recurrent players.

Las Atlantis offers a beautifully designed mobile and desktop website that is also very functional. This is partly due to the rounded buttons and light colors they use. Also, their categories make finding the right game easy.

They have many bonuses and promotions some are incredibly generous, such as the 280% Slots Bonus. But what we really like is the New game promotion that awards you free spins.

Unfortunately, not all games are accessible on mobile, and its not a very big selection in the first place, with about 200+ games. However, the quality and variety of the games make up for it.

This casino exudes elegance with its cocktail lounge feel. This is more noticeable on their desktop website, but the mobile site still retains that flair. We also liked that the main menu is easily reachable, and you can tap for games and banking conveniently.

This casino offers around 200 slot games and a smaller but varied choice of table games, video poker, and specialty games. The good news is they also have a decent live casino section, which is sometimes lacking in other casinos. You can access the live dealer games after you sign up.

One of the downsides is that there arent many payment methods available. You can choose among Visa/Mastercard, BTC, ETH, Neosurf, and PayID.

Crypto players in search of the best mobile experience will be able to enjoy their favorite bitcoin games at 7bit casino. This retro-themed bitcoin gambling site is specially designed for crypto players in mind.

It doesnt have a dedicated app for iOS or Android, but its mobile gaming experience is superb and is on par with the best mobile casinos with their own mobile apps. All games featured in this site are 100% mobile optimized.

It supports BTC, LTC, DOGE, and ETH so crypto players will have plenty of options to choose from. Theres a huge portfolio of bitcoin games with over 1200 bitcoin-specific games. It accepts traditional payment methods but the transaction fees may throw some players off.

Technically speaking, yes, you can. Since every online casino is on the Internet, and your device most certainly can connect to the Internet, you could visit any website available in your country.

The problem is, however, that not all these desktop websites are optimized for mobile devices. Some are simply poorly designed; others lack many features or games. This can be a frustrating experience for anyone. We analyzed the best mobile casinos, so theres no need for aimlessly wandering around.

Even though you can access all of the casinos weve analyzed via your mobile browser, some also allow you to install their own app.

This is very convenient because they are free from browser constraints (e.g., having to open a new tab for banking) and sometimes offer a better layout. On the flip side, you do need to download and install the app on your device, which isnt an issue when playing on the browser.

It doesnt necessarily mean that apps beat mobile sites 100% of the time. There are also poorly-designed apps and excellent, easy-to-use websites.

Before spending your money on mobile casinos, there are a couple of things you should always check to ensure youre safe. The first one is whether they are licensed or not. This means they operate under a license granted in a specific country.

However, a licensed casino doesnt mean its free from problems. It just means that if you do have problems your rights as a customer are respected. With that being said, the other recommendation is always to check user forums and customer experiences to gauge how well-respected a certain casino is.

Generally speaking, no. The betting amounts for games are the same because games are the same. The way you play the games is also the same, except the layout of the buttons could be different. In some cases, there are some missing games because they simply are not well-designed for mobile experiences, but thats about it.

What you will find different is how you access games, payments, and bonuses. This is because most menus change positions when going mobile, so it may take some time to find things if you are already used to playing on the desktop version.

Just like any regular website, these casinos are accessible from any device. This means that if you change your device or it gets lost or stolen, youll be able to keep playing after you log in again. In the case of mobile casinos with apps, you will need to download the app again.

An important consideration is to be very careful with your login details. Since youre playing on your own device, its tempting to stay logged in all the time, but this is a goldmine in case someone steals it. Be sure to always log out and keep your information safe.

All games available on mobile casinos offer a good mobile experience, so you wont have any issues playing any of them.

It would be best to look for games where text is easy to read, buttons or menus are easy to tap, and perhaps more importantly, your winnings and betting amounts read clearly to avoid any mistakes or issues.

The gaming ecosystem keeps growing every day, and mobile casinos are no different.

We have checked many different options and chosen Super Slots as our top pick because it offers incredible value for its players. Red Dog and Cafe Casino are our runners-up. We can vouch that these are not only great casino sites but they also offer a top-notch mobile experience.

It goes without saying that were all different, of course. So, you should check every mobile casino on this list to find the one that suits you, knowing that they are all safe. For instance, some players love live casino games, and no matter how pleasant the mobile experience is, its a no-go if it doesnt have live table games.

Remember to keep it safe, which is even more crucial with mobile casino websites and apps you take everywhere with you. Take special care whenever youre playing somewhere else, and be sure to connect to trusted networks only.

Abduction, Robbery and Murder Connected to Philadelphia Casino – PokerTube

A casino visit turned into a nightmare ordeal for one gambler last week as he was abducted and robbed on his return home, several armed robbers involved in the second recent such incident involving the Parx Casino in Philadelphia the first seeing a patron murdered for his winnings.

The unnamed 46-year-old victim in this incident left the Parx Casino in Bensalem in the early hours of Sunday morning, but his arrival home saw him attacked by three armed and masked men according to the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper.

Bundled into a U-haul van parked outside his home, the victim was driven to an undisclosed location and questioned in a basement, the glove-wearing attackers determined to find where he hid his cash.

Upon his release, some 2 miles from his house at the 600 block of Adams Avenue, he reported the abduction and robbery despite being warned he would be killed if he contacted the police. He revealed that the robbers had punched him twice and taken cash from his person as well as his home. A handgun, credit and debit cards, and even sneakers were also stolen.

The attack follows the murder of 54-year-old Sree Aravapalli last month, the company CEO and married father-of-two having just cashed out $10,000 at the Parx Casino.

He was shot to death at his Briardale Court home in Plainsboro Township, Middlesex County shortly afterwards, Aravapalli found with multiple gunshot wounds after police responded to a report of shots fired.

Surveillance video from the Parx Casino showed Mr. Aravapalli being followed by two men at the casino throughout the night, and police later arrested Devon Melchor, 26, of Upper Darby, and Jekai Reid-John, 27, of Norristown.

Reid-John, whose debit card had been used at the casino, and whose white BMW car matched that seen outside Mr. Aravapalli home, as well as containing clothing matching that seen at the casino, has been charged with first-degree murder.

Melchor has been charged with armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

The fact that the two bandana-wearing armed robbers driving a blue four-door sedan asked for the specific amount of his winnings led Supe to believe the two threads are connected.

City Hall releases details of casino proposals – Chicago Sun-Times

Posted: November 19, 2021 at 6:19 pm

City Hall on Friday lifted the veil on five competing proposals for the downtown casino that has eluded Chicago mayors for generations and established a rigid timetable to get the projected $200 million in annual revenue rolling in.

Broad outlines of the proposals to build a casino at McCormick Place Lakeside Center, the truck marshaling yards adjacent to McCormick Place, the vacant South Loop site known as The 78 and the Chicago Tribunes Near North Side publishing plant have been known for weeks.

But Fridays unveiling of the five summary proposals by Ballys, Hard Rock, and casino magnate Neil Bluhms Rivers Casino put more meat on the bones. Ballys and Rivers both hedged their bets with two proposals apiece.

The proposals differ in their locations, dollar commitments and in how quickly they could be up and running. Another major difference is the number of additional hotel rooms planned.

The Rivers Chicago McCormick, for example, highlights its plan to use the 2,900 existing Chicago hotel rooms close to the Lakeside Center and build 250 additional ones if necessary.

During a virtual briefing Friday, Chief Financial Officer Jennie Huang Bennett and Samir Mayekar, deputy mayor for economic and neighborhood development, said they are confident that all five proposals will generate in the ballpark of $200 million annually,

Maximizing revenue is critical because the money is earmarked for police and fire pension funds on the brink of bankruptcy. So is minimizing the need for a city subsidy. Both mayoral aides stressed that the casino proposals are self-contained but did not rule out a tax increment financing subsidy.

The summary proposals:

Rivers Chicago McCormick: This proposed rebirth of the underutilized Lakeside Center could be the least expensive and the quickest to market in an estimated 12 months. The estimated cost for 2,600 gaming positions is $1.3 billion $700 million less than the most expensive proposal. It calls for an updated Arie Crown Theater and would provide direct access to the existing, more modern and better-utilized McCormick Place convention halls. That is not necessarily a positive. Some in the convention business dont want a casino so close to the existing complex for fear it would distract conventioneers off the exhibition floor.

Rivers touts its proposal as bankrolling much-needed restoration and deferred maintenance of Lakeside Center that McCormick Place officials would otherwise have difficulty funding. Developers further claim there is ample parking and that the 2,900 existing hotel rooms are already connected by a covered walkway.

Rivers 78: This proposal for the long-vacant, 62-acre South Loop site once owned by convicted political player Tony Rezko carries a $1.6 billion price tag. It also has a potential political problem. It could conflict with Gov. J.B. Pritzkers plan to use part of the property for a University of Illinois tech research center.

My understanding is that, if this is selected, the developers have a vision where these two would co-exist, Mayekar said.

The South Loop development includes a 450,000-square-foot casino with 3,300 gaming positions, a world-class sportsbook and an entertainment complex that includes what the partners call a reborn Mister Kellys nightclub. It also has a design quirk that includes a 1,000-foot-tall Observation Tower, featuring breathtaking, purpose-built viewing and event space drawing inspiration from Chicagos historic bridges. The site is described as shovel-ready and the most accessible of the five sites, with the potential to draw 7 million annual visitors. But it could draw major opposition from South Loop residents, especially in neighboring Dearborn Park to the east.

The observation tower could also be a flashpoint because it would be almost as tall as 875 N. Michigan Ave., formerly known as the John Hancock Center.

Hard Rock: This $1.7 billion casino and entertainment complex would be located at the proposed One Central project that developer Bob Dunn wants on a platform over Metra tracks near Soldier Field. The problem is the One Central project relies on a $6.5 billion publicly subsidized transit center at its core. And both Pritzker and Mayor Lori Lightfoot have been cool to that idea.

If they can be persuaded to come around, developers plan to build a new Hard Rock Hotel with up to 500 rooms. Playing to its strength, Hard Rock touts its entertainment-focused strategy with nearly 35,000 live acts booked annually. They call the development a holistic, destination development to attract locals, the existing tourist base [including conventioneers] and induce new tourism.

They even claim the site would generate an additional $70 million in gaming revenue for the city and $81 million more for the state compared to any other location in Chicago. Hard Rock developers also plan to put up a temporary casino within six to nine months at Lakeside Center and use existing parking at the convention complex. This plan also faces a potential buzz saw of opposition from South Loop residents. They have already mobilized in opposition to Dunns proposed wall of new high-rises to be built on the transit tabletop.

Ballys at the Chicago Tribunes Freedom Center: This development would be on a site at 777 W. Chicago Ave. where the Tribune and Sun-Times are now printed. Developers propose using adjacent property north of Chicago Avenue as a temporary casino site. The permanent casino would include 2,700 slots and 95 table games. The price tag is $1 billion for Phase 1 with the potential for $600 million more in a follow-up phase, subject to achieving a sustainable, 20% on initial investment. The entertainment component would include a River West outpost for the legendary comedy club Second City. The Bally Sports Bar would feature constant celebrity athlete events and a truly immersive sports experience that includes a museum highlighting Chicagos sports history. Ballys primary selling point is a global brand that it claims will draw additional visitors to Chicago. Without mentioning Rivers and its existing Des Plaines casino, the company claims that it is conflict-free with no other interest in the Chicago market. We dont operate, own or partially own casino property located elsewhere within the Chicagoland market, it said. Ballys further claims that its proposal would accelerate revenue to the city through an upfront incentive payment of $25 million if it is awarded a gaming license.

Ballys McCormick Place: This version of the Ballys casino would be at the truck marshaling yards for McCormick Place at 31st Street and DuSable Lake Shore Drive. Local Ald. Sophia King (4th), chairman of the Citys Councils Progressive Caucus, is adamantly opposed to this site because of its proximity to her development baby: the residential and medical research complex on the site of the Michael Reese Hospital, which the city bought for an Olympic Village that was never built. Neighbors have embraced the development but dont want a casino anywhere near it. Neither does King. Mayekar and Bennett said a partnership with City Council members who must approve the final casino site is important. But they are not ruling out the marshaling yards. This Ballys proposal promises a $50 million upfront incentive payment to the city, double its Freedom Center pledge. Like the other Ballys proposal, Phase 1 promises a $1 billion investment with the potential for $600 million more. The plan includes 2,700 slot machines and 95 table games; a 100 all-suite luxury hotel; an outdoor music venue with 500 to 1,000 seats; and green space for relaxation and recreation. Phase 2 would add a 400-room hotel, up to 4,000 total gaming positions and a 3,000-seat flexible indoor entertainment venue that can accommodate large performances, smaller meetings and private events. Ballys McCormick is unique in its proposal to use a portion of the available 4,000 gaming positions allocated to the project for OHare and Midway airports.

Lightfoot wants to make a final recommendation to the Illinois Gaming Board during the first quarter of next year.

Toward that end, City Hall is prepared to launch the public engagement process with a Dec. 16 public hearing where developers will make presentations and answer questions.

That will be followed in early 2022 by negotiations with a developer recommended by a city review committee and chosen by the mayor and approval by the City Council and the Chicago Plan Commission.
