We know better, but do harmful things anyway – cleveland.com

The Nov. 7 commentary by Tom Wetzel and Denise DeBiase about victimless crimes pointed out a feature of human nature that applies to many behavior choices beyond drug use and prostitution.

Day after day, we tend to pursue immediate pleasure for now over enduring future comfort, the two often being opposites.

We smoke cigarettes now, knowing we risk lung cancer in the future. We indulge in sugar and fat now, then bemoan our fates later when we have heart disease. Surely, the apostle Paul spoke for all humanity when he said, I do what I know I shouldnt and I dont do what I know I should.

Why do we humans, who are supposed to be so much smarter than all other animals, intentionally do things to harm ourselves, when all other creatures instinctively do what is best for themselves?

The enemy is not us, and the solution is not ours. Both the enemy and the solution lie within us, but they come from elsewhere.
