When Is The Best Time Of Day To Take Your Fish Oil Supplement? – mindbodygreen.com

Posted: January 3, 2022 at 2:05 am

When it comes to fish oil, the specific time of day doesn't seem to matter as much as the types of food you pair your supplement with. "The omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil have been shown to be better absorbed when taken with a fat-containing meal rather than on an empty stomach,"* says Heimowitz.

Avena agrees: "This can increase the bioavailability of the omega-3s, meaning that you are more likely to absorb them."*

It's worth noting, though, that the form of fish oil you take can also influence your ability to absorb those omega-3sand how important it is that you pop your supplement alongside a meal.* The omega-3s in fish oil supplements come in two major forms: triglycerides (a more natural form, like the kind you find in actual fish) and ethyl esters (a further processed form that may cost you more in the long run).

Here's the deal on these two options: According to a 2020 randomized controlled clinical trial published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, absorption of triglyceride forms is three to five times higher than that of ethyl esters. Blood levels of EPA and DHA also remain higher 24 hours after taking triglycerides compared to ethyl esters.*

The researchers of another study (that's older but still relevant), meanwhile, looked at the difference that high-fat meals have on absorption rates of triglyceride versus ethyl ester forms of fish oil. They found that without the high-fat meal, the absorption rate of ethyl esters hovered around 20%. With the fatty meal, absorption increased to 60%. For triglycerides, meanwhile, absorption was much higher, at 69% without a high-fat meal and 90% with one.

All of this suggests that taking your fish oil supplement with (or around the time of) a fat-containing snack or meal is always a good idea, but that there's much more at stake when it comes to absorption if you're popping an ethyl ester form supplement over a triglyceride one.*

How can you tell which form a product contains, though? Most companies that feature the native form of fish oil/fat (i.e., triglyceride form) of omega-3s in their fish oil are proud of itand call it out right on the label. Take a look at the Supplement Facts panel on a bottle of mbg's omega-3 potency+, for example, and you'll see "EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid triglyceride)" and "DHA (docosahexaenoic acid triglyceride)" specifically highlighted beneath the breakdown of "total omega-3s" per serving.

Whichever form of omega-3s you takeand whenever you choose to take your fish oil supplementyour consistency ultimately has the final impact on how much you benefit. "The health benefits of using daily fish oil supplements are long term, not immediate,"* Avena says. "So, taking them regularly is more important than the time of day you take them."

3 Best Immune Boosters – Top Immunity Supplements That Work – The Daily World

Posted: at 2:05 am

A strong immune system is essential for optimal health. Your immune system acts as your bodys natural defense against disease, infections, and illness.

Some people have healthy immune systems from birth. Others have healthier lives and consume nutritional meals, which help them maintain natural immunity. Many individuals take supplements regularly to strengthen their innate immunity. Zinc, Vitamin C, plant and herbal extracts, along with the other compounds, have been found, in studies, to boost immunological function

There are countless best immunity boosters available today that promise to boost your immune cells for better functioning. Most of them, however, are unsuccessful. We spent hundreds of hours looking for the ones that function. Continue reading to learn about the best immunity boosters in 2021.

To identify the best immunity boosters in 2021, our editorial team tested immunity boosters, studied lab results, contacted manufacturers, and conducted rigorous due diligence. Below are the results of our poll:

Now, if none of the top 3 best immune booster supplements of 2022 work for you, here are a few others that made the cut and are reviewed below:

VitaPosts Immune Support feeds your immune function with a blend of plant extracts. Immune Support contains vitamins, herbal extracts, and other components that, according to VitaPost, can help support a healthy immune system.

Every ingredient added to the formula are known for their immune-enhancing properties and a few of the chemicals boost immune health by supplying antioxidants to the body.

The formula works by concentrating on different aspects of the immune system. VitaPost Immune Support has over a dozen proven components in each capsule, making it among the prominent immune support supplements on the market today. Additionally, its one of many products on this list with the best value for money.

Medicinal Mushrooms are an unexpectedly effective immune booster. Studies have indicated that mushroom extracts can assist with tiredness, fight inflammation, aid in managing stress and cognitive decline, and many more health conditions. Mushroom extracts are incorporated in many trials to improve memory and attention

Others have demonstrated that they help with memory and are best in promoting adequate sleep. Mushroom Defenses creators claim that their supplement will defend you from bacterial and viral dangers while boosting your energy and enhancing respiratory health.

Mushroom Defense combines ingredients not commonly seen in similar mushroom-based supplements, such as Agaricus blazei, a rare and unique mushroom extract from a Brazilian mountain village near Sao Paulo.

If you trust the efficacy of mushroom-based extracts for immune health, then Mushroom Defenses immunity strengthening complex may be your leading choice.

Immune Complex from VitaPost has many similar characteristics as seen in Immune Support, like proven ingredients and a fair price; however, it works differently to support the immune system. Elderberry, echinacea, and other probiotics are included in this recipe, different from Immune Supports ingredients.

These are some of the best-known immunological boosting compounds from nature. Elderberry has been shown in studies to shorten the duration of cold and flu symptoms. Many people use echinacea for similar reasons.

Probiotics are a source of good bacteria that live in your gut and create immune systems. VitaPosts Immune Complex supports digestive health because the gut hosts roughly 70% of the immune system.

Zenith Labs Dr. Ryan Shelton created Nano C Immune Support, another vitamin C supplementation. Vitamin C is present in almost all the best immunity boosters on this list. Dr. Shelton made a tincture that contains bioavailable forms of class C vitamins.

You use Nano C drops daily to boost your immunity by providing your body vitamin C in one substantial dose. Nano C produces 1,000-fold smaller nano forms of C vitamins than naturally produced vitamin C.

This means that your body will be capable of absorbing it more effectively, allowing these vitamins to reach your bloodstream quicker and more efficiently, supplying energy to the cells in your immune system. Nano C, Dr. Shelton says, will stimulate antibody formation, strengthen immune system function, and assist in faster recovery from bacterial infections and viruses, among several other things, the reason why it is considered as one of the best Vitamin C supplements.

Simple Promises Epishield Plus is one of the dietary supplements that promise to boost immunity in only two hours. This supplement contains various ingredients, including mushroom extract and vitamins C and D, among other elements. Additionally, Epishield Plus includes fermented yeast, which is uncommon in dietary supplements.

Because the fermented yeast in Epishield Plus is supposed to help keep the immune system healthy and reliable.

Only two products on our list include EpiCor, a fermentation of dry yeast manufactured from the Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Although many other immune booster supplements contain vitamins C and D and mushroom extracts, Epishield Plus stands out for its novel usage of fermented yeast extract.

Advanced Bionutritionals promote Resistol as a way of supporting healthy immune function. Eleuthero, Andrographis, Platycodon, licorice, and prickly chaff flower are the supplements five supporting plant extracts, among others. These five powerful anti-inflammatory components have been investigated for their immune-boosting properties, and many individuals take them regularly for immunological support.

The immune supplements described below are high in vitamin D, vitamin C, and other essential vitamins. Advanced Bionutritionals takes a different approach to supplement development, including plant extracts and herbs not included in most other products.

Resistol may be the correct choice for you if you believe in the ability of Andrographis, Platycodon, and eleuthero to promote immune function.

Organixx 7M includes mushroom extracts as well as other substances that boost the immune system. Three of the most popularly used and proven mushroom-based extracts for immunity are all included in this formula.

These different mushroom extracts beta-glucans are claimed to have powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Along with the three listed mushroom extracts, the supplement also contains folic acid which is known to improve immune function and increase the number of good bacteria.

Organixx suggests using their supplement regularly to improve inflammation, good digestion, and immune function while guarding against ailments.

All of the best immunity boosters on this list, this one is certified by Integrative medicine doctors to treat the root cause of low immune function. BioShield MD supplement promotes natural energy, immunity, mental health, and joint health, among other benefits.

Quercetin, EpiCor, Vitamin D3, and bromelain are the four sole components in JayLab Pros Immuno Defense 4x to promote immune health. Immuno Defense 4x, like the other top-ranked choices on our list, focuses on giving higher doses of limited numbers of components instead of lower doses of a considerable number of compounds.

Immuno Defense 4x isnt the cheapest immune support supplement on this list, but its also not the most costly either, at about $45 per bottle. Its also the second product on our list to contain EpiCor, an extract from dried yeast thats been researched for its many immune-supporting properties.

Ion-Blast Technology is also included in the formulation, which improves the digestibility of the zinc and quercetin in the combination, allowing your body to absorb the compounds more efficiently and rapidly than usual.

Immunity 911, as per PhytAge Labs, has the highest concentration of crucial immunity-boosting ingredients, making it ideal for preserving your bodys natural safeguard of defense against illness.

Immunity 911s assured health claims are challenging to evaluate because of their lack of clear labeling. PhytAge Labs is confident that its approach, which contains herbs, mushroom extracts, and superfruits, works to boost your immune system.

Immune Support by Immunity Formula is a therapeutic-grade herb essential oil mix that aids in the treatment of a variety of immunological and viral problems. Immune Support can enhance your natural viral defense, boost your immune system, sanitize any surface, and purify and disinfect the surrounding air, along with other benefits.

To receive the advantages of these essential oils, take Immune Support regularly. Essential oils such as lemon, peppermint, oregano, cinnamon, and turmeric are beneficial to the immune system.

Immunity Formulas Immune Support oil, unlike other supplements, has the convenience of being distributed or topically applied to your skin. The Immunity Formulas Immune Support may be the ideal choice for you if you want to breathe in an immune supplement rather than absorb it through your skin.

All immune support products promise to help the bodys immune system work properly. Some have substances that have been proved to work. Others include strange plant extracts that have only a few scientific studies to back them up. The following ranking criteria were used to distinguish the best and worst immune support supplements:

Significant scientific data support the use of vitamin D, zinc, vitamin C, probiotics, and elderberry extract. These components have been demonstrated in several studies to help with immunity in a variety of ways. Supplements with scientifically established ingredients linked to immunity and immunological function were our favorites.

Some immune support pills include the correct components but at incorrect doses. For example, some supplements have hundreds of components, yet none of the dosages are strong enough to affect immunity. We chose products with high, scientifically confirmed doses of all mentioned components.

Supplements are not allowed to promise to cure diseases or enhance your health under FDA rules. They may only state that they are in favor of health. Many immune booster pills have even dropped the word booster from their titles.

Other immune supplements promote themselves as virtual cure-alls, claiming to heal illnesses, prevent COVID-19, and give a slew of other advantages. These are unsubstantiated and dishonest allegations. We stayed away from supplements that made false promises.

We recommended immune support supplements manufactured in licensed and accredited institutions. Some firms get their ingredients from low-cost sources in other countries. Others rely on local facilities that have been licensed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other national regulatory bodies. The more openness in the production process, the better.

Doctors at the finest supplement businesses lead medical advisory boards. Each recipe is reviewed or created by this medical advisory board, who use their medical knowledge to produce the most refined immune-boosting mix possible. Some supplement businesses lack a medical advisory board or any specialists on staff, making their compositions less trustworthy and effective.

Some manufacturers have launched immune support supplements to make easy money. This has become especially common during the COVID-19 pandemic. We preferred manufacturers with a long and established a reputation for offering honest, effective immune support supplements while maintaining high levels of transparency.

Some immune boosters contain rare mushroom-derived extracts and other mixes that you dont find in other supplements. Nutritional supplements with transparent and reliable ingredient sources were our favorites.

Some people are willing to pay $10 on a vitamin that will help their immune system. Others are looking to pay $100. We provided a selection of immune booster supplements in various pricing ranges, emphasizing high value at all prices.

If youre a healthy adult who isnt on any medicines, youre unlikely to suffer any side effects if you follow the dose directions on your immune support supplement. Nutritional supplement manufacturers are required by law to utilize substances and doses that are Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) by the Food and Drug Administration.

When taken in regular doses, these substances are safe for humans to consume. This is the list that all respectable supplement businesses follow. After people begin taking immune boosters for the first time, they could suffer bloating, stomach pain, or indigestion.

Some people have difficulty breaking down the chemicals in capsules and tablets. However, you should consult a doctor before using any supplement, particularly if you suffer from medical conditions or are currently taking medications.

For general health and wellness, your immune function is critical. Specific vitamins, fruits, plant extracts, herbs, and minerals have supported immunologic functions in studies. Consuming these nutritious foods can help the bodys natural ability to defend itself against aging, diseases, and illness.

Thats why many individuals use immune support vitamins regularly. Following a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are two of the most effective strategies to strengthen your immune system. Immunity may be boosted by eating a well-balanced diet, drinking plenty of water, getting plenty of sleep, and emphasizing exercise.

If you eat poorly or have a sedentary lifestyle, your body will be unable to defend itself. Similarly, your immunity might be weakened by a variety of factors. A bad diet, particularly one high in sugar, can severely reduce your immunity.

Smoking, excessive alcohol use, poor sleep patterns, dehydration, obesity, stress, and insufficient exercise routines can weaken your immune system.

Vitamin C is among the most often used immune support products. Vitamin C has been proven in several studies to improve immunity in a variety of ways. As a result, vitamin C is found in many of the supplements listed above.

Vitamin C is required by the body to produce collagen, L-carnitine, and some neurotransmitters, say the National Institutes of Health. Its also vital for the formation of connective tissue, which influences wound healing. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant, meaning it fights disease-causing free radicals all over your body. Vitamin C has even been proven in specific trials to prevent or postpone the development of some malignancies.

According to studies, persons who suffer from vitamin D deficiency have much worse immune responses than those who obtain necessary daily doses. Autoimmunity and an increased risk of illness, particularly the flu, are connected to vitamin D deficiency. Before the advent of antibiotics, medical practitioners used vitamin D to cure diseases, including TB. Vitamin D may be obtained from a variety of foods. Vitamin D3 from the sunshine can also be converted into usable vitamin D by your body.

The majority of the immune booster supplements listed above are protein-free. Protein is vital for the immune system. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, and your immune system relies on them for sustenance.

Fish, chicken, beef, pig, eggs, yogurts, almonds, beans, and soy are excellent protein sources. Protein is very crucial for maintaining immunity in your intestinal cells. Your gut contains 70% of your entire immune system, and protein can help to promote immunity from the digestive system to the rest of your body.

Many people use zinc supplements regularly to boost their immunity. Zinc is a vital mineral that we obtain through our diet. Zinc insufficiency, like vitamin D deficiency, is linked to a weakened immune system.

According to studies, persons who are deficient in zinc have a higher chance of contracting infectious illnesses. Zinc has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and even the slightest zinc deficiency can lead to immunological failure. You might consider taking a zinc supplement if you dont receive enough zinc through meat, oysters, nuts, or whole grains in your diet.

In recent years, probiotics have become prominent supplements among immune support products. According to studies, the gut contains 70 80 percent of the cells that make up your immune system. If you neglect your gut health, your immune system may suffer. Probiotics have been associated with immune-related illnesses and viral infections in other studies. Probiotics have even been found in other trials to help cure and prevent seasonal allergies.

Outside of Europe, elderberries arent well-known, but thats changing quickly. An increasing number of individuals are using elderberry for its medical and health advantages. Its been used as a home treatment for cold and flu symptoms in Europe for generations.

Several European doctors are now recommending elderberry extract to speed up recovery from colds and flu. According to scientific studies, elderberry extract contains high amounts of vitamin C, making it a potent immunity booster. In one investigation, 60 individuals received 15mL of elderberry syrup four times a day for four days and saw a four-day improvement in symptoms compared to a placebo group.

Echinacea has been utilized as a medicinal herb for ages, like elderberry and other components in this article. Echinaceas function as an immune-supporting component is now scientifically established.

This study discovered that using echinacea for a short time frame might reduce the length and severity of upper respiratory infections and colds. When taken when symptoms first occur, echinacea is helpful, but it appears to be less effective when given later.

Ginger is being used in an increasing number of immune-boosting products. For ages, ginger has been utilized for health and wellbeing in traditional Chinese medicine. Gingers antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects are now well understood. Ginger has antibacterial and antiviral effects, similar to garlic. All of these qualities suggest that ginger might be a superfood for immune support.

Turmeric gets recognized for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Many individuals use turmeric regularly to boost their immunity. Curcuminoids found in turmeric, like curcumin, have been related to anti-inflammatory effects.

Turmerics immunological advantages, on the other hand, may extend beyond its antioxidant qualities. Researchers discovered that turmeric might help the immune system by stimulating various immune cells in this study. Turmeric is also poorly absorbed by the body until combined with black pepper extract (available in supplements like BioPerine), enhancing bioavailability by 2,000 percent.

Finally, theres a lot of proof that immune support pills have scientific advantages. Multiple studies have demonstrated that the top immune system support supplement components, including those listed above, have been connected to immunity.

A: Healthy bodies have immune systems that protect them against harmful chemicals. Your immune function is made up of numerous levels. The primary layers, which act as the bodys first line of defense against infections, include tears and cough reflexes. Foreign invaders are successfully targeted and eliminated by a robust immune system.

A: Many immune-boosting products promise to target T cells specifically. T cells assist in the fight against infections in two ways. Helper T cells stimulate B cells, causing them to secrete antibodies and destroy infected target cells. Other T cells are known as killer T cells, which target infected cells and kill them without generating antibodies.

A: Antibodies are specific proteins that the immune response produces to help your body fight against infections. Antibodies are vital to your immune systems function. Antibodies are essential for the bodys ability to fight disease.

A: Vitamins C, D, and E are the most prominent immune-boosting vitamins. Numerous studies have connected all three to immunological function.

A: Innate or natural immunity is your bodys first line of protection against external invaders or viruses. Innate immunity is aided by the epidermis, mucus, and stomach acids. Some supplements promise to target and strengthen innate immunity particularly.

A: An acquired or adaptive immune function pertains to the immune response component that recognizes a virus. Your thymus, spleen, lymph nodes, and bone marrow are in charge of this part of the immune function. These organs and cells generate antibodies when responding to pathogen threats.

A: Dark chocolate, berries, red grapes, turmeric, leafy greens, ginger, and elderberry are among the most natural foods for boosting immunity. The worst diets for immunity include junk food, foods with extra sugars, fast food, meals containing trans fats and refined carbohydrates (including spaghetti, white bread, pastries, cakes, and cookies), and processed foods.

A: According to studies, added sugars, fast foods, junk food, meals containing refined carbohydrates (including spaghetti, white bread, pasta, pastries, cakes, and cookies), trans fats, and processed meats are the least beneficial foods for your immunity.

A: Studies suggest that people who maintain healthy weight levels have more effective immune functions and responses than overweight people.

A: The best way to boost your immune response is to adopt healthy dietary habits and lifestyles. Exercising regularly and eating a balanced diet can help to strengthen your immune response.

A: Poor exercise habits and diet, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, stress, inadequate sleep patterns, and any other unhealthy behaviors are all contributing factors to a weak immune function.

A: Your gut contains 70 80 percent of all immune system cells. Immunity is determined mainly by your gut bacteria. To boost immunity, many people use probiotics and other gut health supplements.

A: As you become older, your immune system weakens. On the other hand, immunity may be altered by exercise, diet, and lifestyle choices, regardless of your age.

A: Even if a supplement does not expressly promise to enhance immunity, it can still help. According to FDA restrictions, supplements cannot promise to enhance immunity, cure disease, or improve your health.

A: Exercising in moderation is beneficial for ones immunity. Additionally, those who maintain a healthy weight have a more robust immune system. Therefore, frequent and intense activity might lower your immunity levels if you dont allow the body time to recuperate.

A: Vitamin C is an antioxidant, which means it protects your body from free radicals. Diseases and disorders are connected to free radicals. According to research, Vitamin C may not eliminate colds or pulmonary infections but may often decrease their duration.

A: Vitamin D appears to have a wide range of effects on your immune system, promoting immunity in a variety of ways. People who are vitamin D deficient have worse immune function than those who obtain the appropriate daily amount of vitamin D.

A: For ages, Echinacea has been prized for its immune-boosting properties. Echinacea has been proven beneficial when given at the start of cold and flu symptoms in particular research, while other investigations have been less clear.

A: Zinc is vital for immunity, and studies suggest that taking zinc at the start of symptoms helps reduce the length of colds.

A: Probiotics have been scientifically proven to help with intestinal health. Because 70 80 percent of the cells comprising your immunity reside in your gut, promoting gut health can assist with immunity. Probiotics, according to this study, can shorten the duration of respiratory infections

A: Elderberry is a traditional European treatment for boosting immunity. Elderberry is backed by actual scientific data, according to studies. Elderberry, which contains high amounts of vitamin C, appears to shorten the duration of cold and flu symptoms. Elderberry has been shown in studies to be more effective than a placebo in helping people recover from colds.

A: Turmeric is high in curcuminoids, like curcumin, which has antioxidant properties. Oxidation has been related to sickness and illness in studies. Turmeric may assist with immunity by reducing inflammation. According to studies, consuming turmeric daily has profound benefits on some people.

A: Stress impairs your bodys natural defenses, according to studies. Your immunity is greatly influenced by stress. Cortisol, adrenaline, and other stress hormones are released by the body when it is agitated. Cortisol can reduce inflammation in the body. Chronic stress could raise your risk of health problems by lowering your immunity.

A: Germs are necessary for good health. Your immune system can adapt. When your body comes into contact with something strange, it fights it and remembers it. Your body will know what to do if the material reappears. With measles, weve seen that a single infection may protect you for the rest of your life.

Trying a plant-based diet for Veganuary? 6 tips for going vegan in the new year – cleveland.com

Posted: at 2:05 am

CLEVELAND, Ohio You mightve heard of people going vegan for the month of January, which could seem a little daunting. But with some planning, it can be an exciting endeavor to try new foods and perhaps a foray into a plant-based lifestyle.

Veganuary is a UK-based nonprofit that started in 2014 to encourage people to try a vegan or plant-based diet for the month of January. Such diets exclude animal products, including meat, fish, eggs, dairy, whey, honey and gelatin.

According to its website, more than 500,000 people signed Veganuarys pledge to participate in January 2021 40% of whom indicated that they planned to remain vegan afterward.

People opt for a plant-based lifestyle for a variety of ethical reasons, like the harming and killing of animals, the role animal agriculture plays in pandemic outbreaks, the conditions for workers in such industries or the effect on the climate. Or, they may seek to eat a more nutritious diet by decreasing their consumption of animal products, which typically have more calories and saturated fat than whole plant foods so, a vegan diet could help one achieve a New Years resolution of weight loss.

Whatever the motivation, switching from a standard American diet to a vegan one can be difficult in a society where the frequent consumption of animal products is normalized. Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer has compiled 6 transition tips offered by Dr. Natasha Koren, a bariatric medicine specialist with Summa Health, and registered- and licensed-dietician Julia Zumpano with the Cleveland Clinic.

1. Ease into the transition.

You might want to go all-in and immediately go 100% plant-based for the month. While that could be effective in achieving your goals, it could also cause you to crash and burn.

All-or-nothing is not exactly a good approach for success, Koren said. Most people dont keep a diet for longer than 20 weeks.

If its something that you may want to instill more than a month, I would suggest going more of a transitional period, Zumpano said. I would generally start with one or two meatless meals a week, but if youre looking to speed up the process, just do it for the month.

Zumpano also suggested going plant-based Monday through Friday, so you can have flexibility on the weekends especially since going fully plant-based can become a social challenge for people, when theyre eating out or gathering at someone elses home, she added.

And if theres a non-vegan food that you feel like you cant give up, then consider incorporating that into a flexible approach. For instance, if youve ever said, I could go vegan, except for cheese, then you can eliminate all animal products from your diet except cheese. Dont get hung up on labeling yourself as a vegan immediately, but rather, take the baby steps that will help you get there.

2. List vegan foods you already like.

Start with your preferences, Koren encourages. What are your favorite fruits? Which vegetables do you prefer as a side dish?

As far as your favorite meals that include animal products, can they be veganized? Try searching the internet for easy or quick vegan versions of traditionally animal-based dishes. Also, the availability of vegan alternatives for various meats, milk, butter, cheese and eggs has grown exponentially in recent years, making it easy to swap out ingredients.

Additionally, dozens of popular packaged foods are accidentally vegan, including Oreos, Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos, Fritos, a variety of potato chips and most crackers including Ritz, Triscuits and Wheat Thins.

Although, for health reasons, Koren and Zumpano encourage people to limit their intake of processed foods and to instead focus on whole foods.

3. Dont stress over small amounts.

As you start reading ingredients, youll likely be astounded by how common it is for very small amounts of animal products, especially milk or milk powder, to be in foods that you wouldnt expect so much so, it has even become a meme among vegans on the internet.

You might discover that some of the foods you have at home, such as your favorite bread, might contain a small amount of milk. Your favorite cereal might be fortified with Vitamin D, which is typically made from lanolin, which comes from sheeps wool. The jar of peanuts in your pantry might contain gelatin. And you might be troubled to know that most white sugars are typically refined using animal bone char.

Eliminating each and every trace of animal products from your diet can begin to feel overwhelming. But instead of going through the stressful and expensive process of cleaning out all your cupboards and stocking up with certified vegan foods, try shifting your focus. By forgoing meat, fish, milk, dairy products and eggs, youre doing the majority of the legwork of being vegan. If you stick with a plant-based diet long-term, you can learn about which products have trace ingredients and avoid them, but its not something to hyperfocus on in the beginning.

4. Consider nutritional concerns.

Koren and Zumpano each identified several nutrients that can be harder to obtain on a plant-based diet. If you only stick to the diet for a month, Zumpano said, it is unlikely that youll develop deficiencies in that time. But if you commit to it long-term, you might want to plan your meals and take supplements to ensure youre consuming the recommended daily amounts.

You want to plan a source of plant-based protein at every meal, Zumpano said. Someone who eats meat could eat one or two larger pieces of meat throughout the day to adequately meet their protein needs. But when youre having plant-based protein, you do have to eat a larger volume to get in the amount you need, so it has to be properly spread out throughout the day.

High-protein vegan foods include beans, legumes, tofu, tempeh, edamame, soy milk, hemp seeds, chia seeds, nuts, peas, grains, rice and most mock meats.

Since its only found in animal products, vegans must consume Vitamin B12 through fortified foods or supplements. Koren says a 500 microgram supplement once a week is usually sufficient. Foods fortified with B12 may include plant milks, cereals and nutritional yeast, which is a cheesy powder popular among vegans.

I encourage [nutritional yeast] as a seasoning for vegans because its fortified with other B vitamins - you get more than just the B12 - and its a nice cheese alternative, Zumpano said. You get other vitamins and minerals from it, and its also a source of protein, [and] its very low in sodium and fat.

I dont think I would segregate a plant-based diet as being more likely deficient in Vitamin D, Zumpano said. I think, in general, the American population is deficient in Vitamin D.

In addition to getting Vitamin D from direct sunlight which is not preferred, since sun exposure can lead to skin damage or skin cancer it is present in fortified plant milks and some wild mushrooms, Koren said.

Many plant milks and some blocks of tofu are fortified with calcium. Tahini is high in calcium, along with some dark leafy greens but you would have to eat a large volume of them to reach the daily recommendations.

Iron, which Koren said is especially a concern for women, can be found in dried beans, peas, lentils, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, hemp seeds, flax seeds and fortified grains.

Since the iron in plant foods is non-heme as opposed to the heme iron in meat Koren recommends eating them alongside foods rich in Vitamin C, such as bell peppers or citrus fruits, to increase absorption.

Zinc is found in beans, whole grains, wheat germ and fortified cereals, Zumpano said.

Omega-3 fatty acids, commonly associated with fish, can be found in chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp seeds and walnuts.

While vegans might be concerned about consuming sufficient amounts of the aforementioned nutrients, they might want to be mindful they dont eat too much fiber. A person on the standard American diet consumes about 10 to 15 grams of fiber per day, which is below the recommended daily amount of 25 to 30 grams. Vegans, on the other hand, average about 46 grams of fiber a day, according to a 2013 study.

Going from 10 to 40 [grams per day] is a really big change, and youre going to have a lot of GI (gastrointestinal) effects from that, Zumpano said. Some people do great; some people, it does affect their guts significantly. Most people would know their bodys response to things. If youve responded to a high-fiber meal in the past pretty aggressively, then you want to be cautious on how you increase your fiber intake.

During the holidays, people tend to have especially low fiber intake, Zumpano added. So, it might be worth taking a fiber supplement in the days and weeks leading up to transitioning to a plant-based diet at the beginning of the new year. You could also eat mock meats, which are typically lower in fiber than whole protein sources, such as beans.

5. Plan your meals.

The American Dietetic Association states that appropriately planned vegan diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate and can provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. But the operative phrase is appropriately planned.

It might be helpful to track your meals or calculate their nutritive makeup in advance by using a food-logging website or app, such as Cronometer or MyFitnessPal. Such tools can allow you to gauge whether youre eating too much or too little of certain foods, and adjust accordingly.

Planning meals in advance can also make eating more convenient, and thus, make it easier to stick to a plant-based lifestyle.

Frequently, people simply dont have time to cook every day, Koren said, recommending that people try batch cooking or meal prepping once a week or every few days.

6. Have fun!

A plant-based diet is inherently restrictive it excludes entire food groups. But it doesnt have to feel restrictive. There are certainly fruits, vegetables and other plant foods that you havent tried. Your next favorite food might be pasta with nutritional yeast sprinkled on top, buffalo tempeh wings or jackfruit tacos.

There might be new-to-you vegan dishes that would be fun to cook at home, or that you can order from a local restaurant. Cleveland.com has a list of some of Clevelands best vegan-friendly restaurants.

Try to have fun with it, and have a positive attitude, Zumpano said.

Everything You Need To Know About Antioxidants – Health Essentials from Cleveland Clinic

Posted: at 2:05 am

Antioxidants are one of those things you hear a lot about. Whether its from a healthcare provider or in advertising, theres no getting around all the chatter aboutantioxidantsand how important they are.

Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center. Advertising on our site helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services.Policy

But what are antioxidants? And why are they so important? To get to the bottom of all the buzz, we spoke with registered dieticianNicole Hopsecger, RD.

Antioxidants are naturally occurring chemicals in foods that can serve as a defense against free radicals, explains Hopsecger. Free radicals arenormalbyproducts of metabolism that occur in our bodies or can be a result of environmental factors, like air pollution and smoke.

The primary benefit of antioxidants is their ability to safely react with free radicals before damage can be done on a cellular level. Basically, Antioxidants fight free radicals, says Hopsecger.

Free radicals can damage the bodys cells by changing a cells DNA, or it can alter a cells membrane, explains Hopsecger. This interaction between free radicals and the body is called oxidative stress, which is often thought to be what contributes to the increased risk of developing chronic disease.

Hopsecger says that while fighting free radicals is the primary benefit of antioxidants, there is a secondary benefit.

Indirectly, antioxidants help reduce the risk of chronic disease development because they negate those free radicals from causing havoc to our cells, Hopsecger says.

Whileour bodies naturally produce some antioxidants, certain foods are the best way to ensure youre getting enough antioxidants.

Some examples of antioxidants and the foods (and vitamin sources) in which you can find them, according to Hopsecger, include:

Like many healthcare providers, Hopsecger recommends a rainbow diet to ensure youre getting all the necessary nutrients your body needs.

A rainbow diet means eating fruit and vegetables of different colors like green (broccoli or spinach), red (tomatoes or strawberries), orange (carrots or oranges) and yellow (bell peppers or banana). This ensures you consume a diverse range of vitamins, nutrients and, yes, antioxidants.

While antioxidants are very good for your health, there are misconceptions about them and confusion on how best to make them part of your diet.

We cant rely on any single antioxidant or nutrient to do all the work, Hopsecger says. We need to get a variety of those to make sure we stay healthy and the best way to do that is through a healthy, balanced and varied diet.

Each antioxidant behaves differently in our body, Hopsecger says, and no antioxidant can do all the work of several different ones. On a similar note, she adds that the idea of a superfood that can supply a higher level of nutrients than others is a bit of a misnomer.

Superfoods tend to be tied more to a marketing trend, she says, noting that both kale and avocados have experienced booms in popularity in recent years. And while those foods are healthy, its more important to make sure youre getting a variety of foods in your diet like that rainbow diet than focusing on any one particular food too much.

While getting antioxidants into your body is good, doing so through supplements may not be, says Hopsecger. Studies are inconclusive about whether or not supplements actually help, or in some cases, cause more harm than benefit, she says.

Not only can these interact with medications youre already taking, but youre not getting a well-rounded variety, particularly if youre mega-dosing a single one, she adds. And those single antioxidants may not work as well without the presence of other nutrients you get more naturally through a well-balanced diet.

Is it better to get nutrients from food or supplements?

Posted: December 23, 2021 at 9:46 pm

Researchers have found that nutrients from food may be linked to lower risks of death, while excess intake of certain supplements may have the opposite effect.

Taking supplements leads to an increased level of total nutrient intake.

Dietary supplements include vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, and enzymes.

Suppliers sell them in different forms, including tablets, capsules, powders, and liquids.

Common dietary supplements include calcium, fish oil, and vitamin D.

Dietary supplements should not replace complete meals, which are essential to nurturing the body. Talking to healthcare providers before making the decision about whether to take supplements is a good practice. Doctors can help people achieve a balance between nutrients from food and supplements.

Many supplements also contain active ingredients that may have strong biological effects. Any of the following actions could be harmful or even life-threatening: combining supplements, mixing supplements with medicines, or taking too much of some supplements, especially vitamin A, vitamin D, and iron.

When buying supplements in the United States, it is important to read labels and get information about the manufacturer. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are responsible for taking action against any adulterated or misbranded supplements but not before the products are available on the market.

According to the 2018 consumer survey conducted by the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), consumer confidence in products and trust in the dietary supplement industry is strong among people in the U.S.

The survey found that 75 percent of U.S. individuals take dietary supplements, as opposed to just 65 percent in 2009.

This years data provide further evidence that dietary supplements are mainstays in modern-day health and wellness regimens, explains Brian Wommack, the senior vice president of communications at the CRN.

Vitamin and mineral supplements such as vitamin D and calcium remain the most popular types. However, the use of herbals and botanicals especially turmeric has significantly increased during the past 5 years.

The main reason that U.S. individuals take dietary supplements is overall health and wellness, according to the survey.

Although many people use dietary supplements, a recent study found that multivitamins, vitamin D, calcium, and vitamin C showed no advantage or added risk in the prevention of cardiovascular disease or premature death.

However, folic acid alone and B vitamins with folic acid may reduce the risk of heart disease.

The team, from the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Medford, MA, conducted a study to evaluate the association between dietary supplement use and all-cause mortality. The researchers have published their results in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

As potential benefits and harms of supplement use continue to be studied, points out senior study author Fang Fang Zhang, Ph.D., an associate professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, some studies have found associations between excess nutrient intake and adverse outcomes, including increased risk of certain cancers.

The study used data from more than 27,000 U.S. adults and assessed whether adequate or excess nutrient intake was linked to all-cause mortality, and whether results changed if the nutrients came from supplements instead of food.

For each nutrient, the scientists calculated the daily supplement dose by combining the frequency with the product information for ingredient, the amount of ingredient per serving, and ingredient unit.

They assessed the participants dietary intake of nutrients from foods using 24-hour dietary recalls and mortality outcomes through the National Death Index through December 31, 2011.

There were several key findings:

In addition to the harmful effects of excess calcium intake from supplements, the researchers found that people with no sign of vitamin D deficiency who use vitamin D supplements may have an increased risk of all-cause mortality.

Further research on this potential connection is necessary.

Our results support the idea that, while supplement use contributes to an increased level of total nutrient intake, there are beneficial associations with nutrients from foods that arent seen with supplements.

Fang Fang Zhang, Ph.D.

Zhang adds that it is important to understand the effect that the nutrient and source might play on health and mortality outcomes especially if not beneficial.

She also notes some limitations in the study, including the duration of dietary supplement use studied and the fact that dietary supplement use was subject to recall bias.

What Are the Benefits of Sea Moss? – Health Essentials from Cleveland Clinic

Posted: at 9:46 pm

A famous animated crab once sang, The seaweed is always greener in somebody elses lake. But you dont have to be a musically gifted crustacean to reap the benefits of sea moss which offers a bevy of potential health benefits.

Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center. Advertising on our site helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services.Policy

Sea moss is a type of red algae also known as Irish moss (or Chondrus crispus, if you want to get formal about it). Its harvested for its carrageenan, an ingredient used to thicken milk products like ice cream, but its also available raw and in supplement form think pills, powders, gels and gummies.

Registered dietitianBeth Czerwony, MS, RD, CSOWM, LD,weighs in on sea mosss benefits and side effects, so you can decide whether this spiny sea vegetable deserves a place in your diet.

First things first: There seem to be quite a few health benefits of sea moss, but they arent heavily studied, Czerwony warns, and sea moss supplements are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Theres plenty of research data on the health benefits of seaweed, sea mosss cousin just not on sea moss specifically. Still, its considered generally safe for consumption, and the benefits align with those of other seaweeds.

Seaweed is a bit of a superfood. It has a higher fiber content than most vegetables which is a good thing, as fiber has all kinds of positive effects on the body. It can improve blood sugar control, help lower your cholesterol and reduce your risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease.

Studies show that sea moss may help lower bad cholesterol, which is one of the factors for heart disease, Czerwony says. It has also been shown to help lower blood pressure, another key factor in heart health.

Remember how much fiber seaweed has? High-fiber foods are filling foods, which means they may keep you from overeating. Fiber keeps us fuller longer, which may help with weight control, Czerwony says.

Iodine is one of the keys to a healthy thyroid, but because your body doesnt make iodine on its own, you can only get it through diet. (Most people, however, get enough iodine from dairy products, seafood and iodized salt.)

Your digestive system is full of bacteria, some good and some bad. And because gut health is associated with overall health, balancing out those bacteria is an important element of your wellness. Algae, including sea moss, is a good source of fiber and live bacteria. It can help replenish the good bacteria in our gut, Czerwony says.

One study showed Atlantic salmon that ate sea moss to have a more efficient immune response than salmon that didnt. Of course, fish and people have very different bodies, and no similar studies have yet proven the same effect on humans.

Still, a healthy gut is associated with a healthy immune system. And sea moss is also high in iron and antioxidants, which both contribute to immune health.

Sea moss is rich in an amino acid called taurine, which helps with muscle-building. When we exercise, we get little micro-tears in our muscles, Czerwony explains, but amino acids can help with that recovery.

Sea moss also has about 6 grams of protein per 100 grams, an exercise staple. Just dont rely solely on sea moss for exercise recovery! Youve still got to make sure youre getting enough healthy food, hydration, rest, etc.

Sea moss is mostly thought to be healthy, though it contains inconsistent amounts of both good nutrients and some less healthy stuff (which well get to in a moment).

Sea moss is a product of its environment, so its nutritional value depends largely on where its grown, Czerwony says. Unfortunately, theres no real way to know exactly whats in it or how much, and one batch may have higher potency than the next one.

Sea moss is associated with two key risks.

Too much of a good thing becomes a bad thing, as is the case with iodine. In fact, endocrinologists advise against taking iodine supplements unless specifically indicated by your doctor, as they may actually have a negative effect on your thyroid.

Yikes! Seaweed is known to absorb heavy metals from the water in which it grows. Its not toxic in small amounts, but you definitely dont want to overdo it on seaweed consumption.

Not of risk but still of note is sea mosss slimy texture and fishy taste.

Raw sea moss has an earthy, underwater taste similar to clams and oysters. If you dont like seafood, the flavor of raw sea moss is probably not going to be for you, Czerwony says. Luckily, though, it shouldnt have much of a taste in supplement form.

Taste aside, you may also be put off by sea mosss mouthfeel: In gel form, it has a slick, thick texture similar to aloe vera. If it bothers you, try switching to a different type of supplement.

One study found that 4 grams of sea moss per day is typically safe but you should still check with your healthcare provider before taking it, especially if you already have hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.

Its available the raw, as well as in a variety of supplement forms, including:

Which version you take is up to you. Its really about whatever your preference is, Czerwony says, so long as youre following proper dosing instructions.

But whether youre just taking sea moss supplements or loading up on other types, too, its worth remembering that you cant out-supplement a bad diet.

Sea moss does have potential health benefits, but having a good, varied diet is going to be the most helpful to your body, Czerwony says. Dont depend on supplements.

Getting The Vitamins & Minerals You Need On Any Diet – SWAAY

Posted: at 9:46 pm

These days modern life can bring with it a wide range of dietary preferences and restrictions. Many people are on restricted diets due to health conditions, religious reasons, intolerances, and allergies. As a registered dietitian, I believe its important to know the different ways to get the key nutrients your body needs on any diet. What should you consider key nutrients? Well, that really depends person to person. However, overall, iron and calcium should be staples. In the winter time, vitamin C is really important too. And for pregnant women, getting some folate in your diet is a must.

Lets talk Calcium for a moment. For example, if you are lactose intolerant, it may be harder for you to get nutrients through milk and cheese. Both are calcium rich foods and are generally good sources, but if you have an intolerance, youll need to get calcium elsewhere. Some other sources of calcium could include broccoli or poppy seeds.

When it comes to restricted diets, supplements can play an important role. As a dietitian, I always suggest checking with your doctors first, especially for people who have severe deficiencies where food itself may not be enough, which can be the case with iron deficiencies, for example. The same could be the case for someone with a vitamin B12 deficiency. Sometimes people whove been vegan for years tend to be B12 deficient, because its commonly found in meats.

Whenever you eliminate whole food groups, you have to be cognizant about what vitamins and minerals youre getting. It may take more work and planning, but it can be done. Often when we think of eating healthy, people think that means removing fats and carbs from our diets. But the truth is several are healthy and a great source of nutrients. Fruit and yogurt have great nutrients and they are carbs. Whereas avocado and olive oil are nutrient rich fats. Also, calories dont really matter when it comes to vitamins and nutrients. For example, one tablespoon of peanut butter is about 100 calories and it has a ton of nutrients. Just because a food is higher in calories doesnt necessarily mean that it isnt full of needed minerals and nutrients.

Personally, I follow a Kosher diet. Sometimes I also loosely follow parts of a Mediterranean diet by limiting red meat during the week. I intentionally ensure Im getting the vitamins and minerals needed by including healthy fats through poultry and fish during the week. One of my go-to tips for finding foods rich in key vitamins and nutrients is to keep things colorful. A good indicator of whole foods rich in minerals is that they are also rich in color. For example, sweet potatoes rich in orange color are high in vitamin A, and tomatoes are rich in lycopene due to their red color.
