Dr. Haqqani: New diet research shows benefits of olive oil – Midland Daily News

Posted: at 9:07 am

On January 10, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) released new findings regarding the impact of consuming olive oil instead of other substances, showing benefits for the cardiovascular system and other areas of health.

This follows new guidelines released in late 2021 by the American Heart Association (AHA) that focus on a total dietary pattern. As the new year begins and many people focus on beginning and maintaining healthier living practices, these developments in nutritional research prove beneficial.

New research on the benefits of olive oil consumption

The study reported in JACC compared those who consumed olive oil on a regular basis with individuals who rarely or never added it to their diets. A total of 60,582 women and 31,801 men were surveyed over a 28-year period in research gathered in the Nurses Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. None of the participants had cardiovascular disease or cancer when the studies began. Every four years between 1990 and 2018, they were questioned about their olive oil consumption. The research showed higher olive oil intake is associated with a 19% lower risk of mortality in cardiovascular disease. This means that deaths caused by heart attack, stroke, heart failure, arrhythmia and heart valve issues are less likely to occur.

Additionally, the results showed that 17% fewer cancer deaths occur in those with higher olive oil intake. The risk of deaths involving neurodegenerative disease also decreased 29% among those using olive oil regularly. Neurodegenerative diseases affect heart function as well as balance, breathing, movement and talking. Alzheimers disease, Parkinsons disease, Huntingtons disease, spinal muscular atrophy, and other conditions are neurodegenerative diseases.

An 18% reduction in risk of respiratory disease mortality was revealed in the study as well. Respiratory diseases include asthma, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other conditions.

New dietary guidelines

The AHA guidelines published November 2, 2021, emphasize the importance of a dietary pattern with 10 features, including diet and lifestyle elements. The guidelines stated that before and during pregnancy, potential and expectant mothers can help influence the health of their unborn children by adhering to a heart-healthy diet. This could limit the possibility of excess weight in their children and reduce the risk of childhood obesity that can be detrimental to the body as the child grows older. A proper diet can also help slow the development of declining memory later in life. Children should learn how to eat healthily early in life to develop nutritional habits that will influence their health as they age.

Maintaining healthy weight is important in all stages of life, and a balance of food intake and physical activity is recommended. The dietary pattern states that while most nutrition information on food packaging is based on a 2,000-calorie-per-day diet, certain factors such as age, daily physical activity and gender may alter exactly how many calories an individual may require. A consultation with a physician can help determine daily caloric needs of a particular person. Physical activity is part of the equation, and efforts should be made to expend as many calories as one consumes.

While the study reported in JACC focused on the benefits of olive oil, honing a diet to emphasize other types of healthy foods is imperative. It is well-known that avoiding processed foods, added sugars, excessive salt, alcohol and tobacco is advantageous to the heart and other parts of the body.

The 2021 AHA guidelines also recommend reducing dependency on dietary supplements and opting, instead, for foods that will provide the same nutrients. Among them are a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains and lean or high-fiber proteins. Nuts and legumes, fish, low-fat and non-fat dairy products are examples.

It is also helpful to limit red meat and make sure that cuts of meat consumed are lean. It should be noted that some plant-based diets may increase carbohydrates and sugar that can be harmful, increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The elements in certain foods should be considered if a particular emphasis on one plant group is chosen as the basis for a diet program.

A physician should be consulted before any diet and exercise program begins. To learn more about a variety of health conditions, management and treatment, log on to vascularhealthclinics.org.

Biotin Benefits: What the Experts Have to Say – Health Essentials from Cleveland Clinic

Posted: January 14, 2022 at 9:00 pm

Biotin is a B vitamin thats important for many body functions, including metabolizing food the process of turning food into energy. And many people swear that biotin has improved their hair, skin and nail health, too.

Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center. Advertising on our site helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services.Policy

But is biotin the magic solution to getting flowing locks, strong nails and glowing skin? Registered dietitian Courtney Barth, RD, explains the possible benefits of biotin and whether this nutrient could help you.

Biotin plays an important role in converting carbohydrates, fats and proteins into energy. It also helps your bodys cells function well. Biotin is essential, which means you cant live without it.

But why does biotin get superhero status when it comes to hair, skin and nail health? Maybe because biotin deficiency not having enough biotin can lead to:

But biotin deficiency is rare in the U.S., Barth explains. So if you have thinning hair or brittle nails, its probably not due to a biotin deficiency. Theres usually another health condition causing these problems, such as iron deficiency or a thyroid issue.

So dont assume taking biotin supplements will cure hair, skin or nail problems. If you notice sudden changes in your hair, skin or nails, see your provider, says Barth. Dont self-treat with biotin supplements without knowing the cause.

Adults need 30 micrograms of biotin each day to avoid a deficiency. Most people get adequate biotin through their diet.

Biotin is in many of the foods we eat, such as fortified cereal, egg yolks, meat and legumes (like lentils, chickpeas and beans), explains Barth. And its always better to get your vitamins and minerals through a balanced diet rather than supplements.

If youre pregnant or breastfeeding, you need more biotin, though 35 micrograms per day.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women often benefit from a prenatal vitamin, says Barth. Prenatal vitamins contain biotin, folic acid and other nutrients that are important for the health of the mother and baby. If youre not sure which prenatal vitamin to take, ask your provider.

Maybe youre not worried about biotin deficiency but wonder whether a biotin supplement could help you get amazing hair. After all, many products advertise biotin as a hair growth booster.

No studies have proven that biotin supplements will change the appearance of your hair, skin or nails, Barth says. But some people find that taking a biotin supplement helps them boost hair and nail growth. Its usually not harmful to try biotin for thicker hair or healthier nails.

If you decide to take a supplement, be patient. It takes several months to see new hair or nail growth, notes Barth. Biotin may be worth a try if your doctor gives you the go-ahead. But its not a guarantee that youll see a major change in your appearance.

Biotin supplements have few side effects if you take them as directed. Biotin supplements and B-complex vitamins are safe for most people, though they may cause a slightly upset stomach, Barth says.

High-dose biotin supplements can also interfere with certain medical test results, so tell your healthcare provider if youre taking them, advises Barth.

Biotin and other B vitamins are water-soluble, so its hard to overdose on them. If you take in more biotin than you need, your body doesnt store it, Barth explains. You naturally get rid of excess biotin and other B vitamins when you urinate.

Still, more is not always better. Dont take more than the dosage listed on the package and stop taking biotin if you notice side effects.

You can enhance your hair, skin and nail health even without a supplement. A balanced diet with a variety of fruits, vegetables and protein is important for all three. Drink plenty of water, too.

Healthy food and proper hydration will help you feel and look your best, says Barth.

In the mood: Foods and beverages to help us feel better – New Hope Network

Posted: at 9:00 pm

While it might be too soon to predict the long-term effects of the past couple of years on our psyche, our bodies and how we approach our overall wellness, it seems a safe bet that consumers will continue to look for ways to get more benefits out of the foods and beverages they consume. Where supplements may have once been the go-to for mind-body support, natural food brands have moved squarely into the #swellness space with assurances that we can be betterwith the help of better sleep, better energy, focus, relaxation and morethanks to what we eat.

As more functional ingredients move into the food and beverage spheres, the line between these and supplements has blurred. The appearance of a Nutrition or Supplement Facts panel increasingly doesnt matter, and some types of products (we mean you, powders!) straddle the line so adroitly between food, beverage and supplement that their definition (and perhaps where to merchandise them) might fluctuate depending on how individuals opt to consume them: added to water, blended in a smoothie, sprinkled over cereal or included in baked goods.

Related: Changing tastes: 3 trends cleaning up sweets and snacks

Whats important, however, is what these products increasingly have in common: ingredients that offer relief for what ails us (stress) and what eludes us (sleep, relaxation, concentration, memory, even bliss); that bridge the gap between body and mood; and that, thankfully, are being added mindfully and in more transparent and efficacious doses.

Functional mushrooms and adaptogenic botanicals such as ashwagandha, tulsi, maca, rhodiola, kava kava, CBD and others are joined by mood-boosting vitamins and minerals in functional fare that can include anything from coffee and tea to RTD beverages, snacks, bars, sweets, and more.

Tom Brady’s TB12 Protein Powder Review: Health, Nutrition and Taste – menshealth.com

Posted: at 9:00 pm

No matter your personal feelings about Tom Brady, theres no arguing that the guy is a legend. With seven Super Bowl rings won on two different teams, its fair to say that he may be greatest quarterback of all time. At age 44, hes also the oldest active player currently in the NFL.

Given his GOAT status and longevity in such a grueling sport, its no surprise Tom Bray's diet is just as dialed-in as his on-field performance. According to his personal chef, about 80 percent of what he eats is vegetables, plus whole grains, lean meat, and fish.

Another mainstay on Bradys menu? Smoothies. Brady previously told Men's Health that he starts his morning with two smoothies: one containing blueberries, bananas, nuts, and seeds, and the other a post-workout protein shake made (presumably) with his own TB12 protein powder.

As part of the growing TB12 supplement line, there are two TB12 protein powders currently on offer: one made with whey isolate, and the other with pea protein. But just because theyre backed by a world-class athlete, doesnt necessarily mean theyre the best for the average guy.

Before you try any supplement, including protein powder, it's important to know that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesnt officially regulate them. To make sure youre getting whats on the label, opt for supplements marked with third-party certifications, like United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) or National Sanitation Foundation (NSF). This ensures the supplement has been tested, is free from banned substances, and its ingredients verified.

TB12's protein powders are NSF-certified, which means that it has undergone testing to ensure its quality, purity, and safety, says Taylor Dixon, M.S. R.D., an Atlanta-based dietitian who works with athletes.

To help you make an informed decision on whether or not this stuff is a good choice for you, I taste-tested the stuff and asked two fellow registered dietitians for their thoughts on the ingredients and nutrition facts.

Heres our honest review of TB12 protein powder.

If you prefer no-frills, unflavored protein powder, TB12s Whey Protein Isolate hits the mark.

Courtesy of Retailer

TB12 Whey Protein Isolate

$42.00

Like all whey protein isolate, TB12 Whey Protein Isolate is derived from milk but does not contain lactose, so its easy to digest. It contains all nine essential amino acids (the ones your body cant produce on its own) and is thus considered a complete protein.

What's the Nutrition Information for TB12 Whey Protein Powder?

One 22 gram scoop of TB12 Whey Protein Isolate contains 80 calories, 20 grams of protein, and zero carbs. There are trace amounts of fat from the sunflower lecithin (more on the specific ingredients later).

Whey protein contains all three branched-chain amino acids (BCAAS) leucine, isoleucine, and valinewhich can help increase muscle growth.

Whey protein also gets a perfect score for digestibility, says Sharon Puello, R.D., a dietitian and certified diabetes care and education specialist based in Yonkers, NY. This is based on the protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS), a measure to assess how much of the protein in a food your body can actually use.

Dixon says that its best to stick to 30 grams of whey protein or less in one sitting, to prevent possible side-effects like gas, bloating, and stomach cramping. But because the optimal amount of protein for post-workout muscle synthesis is between 25 and 35 grams, you may want to use a heaping scoop of this stuff for optimal recovery and strength gains.

TB12 Whey Protein Isolate is made with just two ingredients: whey protein isolate and a small amount (less than 1.5 percent of the powder) of sunflower lecithin, a plant-based fat that acts as an emulsifier and helps the powder mix easily with water.

Whey protein is one of the highest quality and most bioavailable forms of protein available as a supplement, Dixon says.

Theres very little sunflower lecithin in the product, and you can rest assured that the plant-based lipid wont cause any harm. A 2017 review published in EFSA Journal found that there were no negative side effects associated with consuming lecithin as a food additive.

I tasted the whey protein isolate both mixed with water and blended into a banana smoothie. Because its flavorless and unsweetened, the TB12 Whey Protein Isolate is best when blended with other ingredients, like fruit in a smoothie.

The TB12 Plant-Based Protein is an alternative to whey protein powders. Unlike other plant-based powders that contain a mix of protein from various ingredients, like soy and brown rice, this one is derived entirely from peas, one of the only plant-based protein sources that contains all nine essential amino acids.

TB12 Plant-Based Protein Powder (Vanilla)

The plant-based protein powder has a very different nutrition profile than its whey-based counterpart.

For starters, it has 20 percent more protein. That said, the amount of protein that's actually digested and used by your body is likely similar. While casein and whey get a perfect digestibility score (1.0), pea protein concentrate/isolate gets a score of 0.893, meaning our bodies are able to use less of the pea protein than of the whey and casein, Puello says. Still, the fact that pea protein contains all essential amino acids is a definite plus.

Courtesy of Retailer

TB12 Plant-Based Protein (Mixed Berry)

$52.00

One 32 gram scoop of TB12 Plant-Based Protein (Vanilla) contains 130 calories, 24 grams of protein, 3 grams of carbohydrates (one of which is fiber), and 2 grams of fat.

One 32 gram scoop of TB12 Plant-Based Protein (Mixed Berry) contains 130 calories, 24 grams of protein, 1 gram of carbs (1 gram of fiber), and 2 grams of fat.

In addition to protein, the plant-based powders also deliver 1 gram of fiber and 2 grams of fat, which is pretty negligible but could help with both fullness and texture.

The TB12 Plant-Based Protein (Vanilla) contains: pea protein, salt, guar gum, reb a (stevia), natural flavors, and monk fruit extract.

The TB12 Plant-Based Protein (Mixed Berry) contains: pea protein, natural berry flavor, salt, stevia extract, red beet powder, organic guar gum, and monk fruit extract.

As previously mentioned, pea protein is about as high-quality plant-based sources get. Its got all nine essential amino acids, including the three BCAAs, and is relatively easy to digest.

Stevia and monk fruit extract are two plant-based sweeteners that have zero calories and are up to 200 times sweeter than sugar. Both are generally regarded as safe (GRAS) by the FDA.

Guar gum, used as a thickener and emulsifier to help this powder blend seamlessly with liquid, is a safe choice from a health perspective, with no known side effects.

Although I worried about these plant-based protein powders tasting grassy, they were actually pretty great. Sure, theres a hint of chalky aftertaste, but even mixed with just water, these powders taste a little bit like the old-school flavored Quaker instant oatmeal packets, which is a good thing. Shake them a few times and theyll also foam and thicken, which makes them fun to drink.

BRITISH CANNABIS products receive confirmation of being the first Cannabis-derived CBD oils & supplements set to remain on the market by the UK…

Posted: at 9:00 pm

BRITISH CANNABIS, registered as CBD Health Foods Ltd, is delighted to become the first company to receive confirmation from the Food Standards Agency UK (FSA) that its cannabis-derived products will remain on the market.

On Thursday 13th January 2022, the FSA confirmed via emails to BRITISH CANNABIS CEO, Thomas Whettem, that the evidence submitted in support of 15 dossiers, spanning over 3,000 products has been checked and is sufficient and that the public list will be amended to reflect these changes.

BRITISH CANNABIS own-brand products - CBD by BRITISH CANNABIS (FKA Canabidol), Access CBD and CBD HEALTH - plus over 150 other brands that they manufacture for, look set to remain on the UK market. Meanwhile, it is widely speculated that an as-yet undetermined number of other products, made by other manufacturers, will be removed from shelves by Trading Standards. This process looks set to begin once the FSA public lists are updated later in 2022.

Robert Jappie, partner at legal firm Ince and preeminent cannabis industry lawyer, remarked at the news: Im delighted that BRITISH CANNABIS has received a positive response from the FSA to their Novel Food submission. Admission of BRITISH CANNABIS products to the compliance registers confirms the companys position at the forefront of the U.K. CBD industry. Novel Food compliance should now provide a platform for the sector to build on its fantastic success to date.

Over the course of 18 months and a multi-million pound investment, BRITISH CANNABIS, whose brands are stocked across many pharmacies and retailers internationally, have dedicated themselves to ensuring the long-term continuity of all-natural, cannabis-based food supplements in the UK. This is for the reassurance of their own consumers and of all the customers whose brands are Powered by BRITISH CANNABIS.

Making this achievement of particular note is the fact that BRITISH CANNABIS products are among the few remaining on the market to use 100% Cannabis sativa L., naturally derived formulas, thus they contain the hundreds of clinically proven plant phytochemicals found in cannabis, whilst also being 0% THC, meaning that they will not cause a high. Their food supplements (CBD oils, capsules etc.) are also free from other controlled cannabinoids.

BRITISH CANNABIS CEO, Thomas Whettem, reacted shortly after hearing the great news: Confirmation directly from the Food Standards Agency, that BRITISH CANNABIS will be the first manufacturer in the world to have cannabis-derived consumer products ratified by the UK government, is yet another monumental breakthrough in our history. For years we have not just pioneered change in this industry but strived to set the bar when it comes to compliance, safety and the simple dedication to excellence we have had since day one.

BRITISH CANNABIS Managing Director, David Ralson, commented on this landmark news: This is a huge milestone for our business and the Cannabis industry as a whole. I would firstly like to pay testimony to our staff, who over the past 6 years have endeavoured to make BRITISH CANNABIS the leading legal-cannabis experts in our sector and this exemplifies our phrase We Know More, Because We Do More.

We have always believed in wholly cannabis-derived, natural products and obtaining the highest quality standards. This is underpinned by our own retail brands, which to date have received over 4,200 Trustpilot reviews with a 5-Star rating!

This also paves the way for our trusted white label partners brands, who continue to work with us, to also remain on the UK market. This allows our business and its compliant partners to continue to grow in what is going to be a very exciting year indeed!

At time of release, the Novel Foods pubic lists have yet to be updated.

BRITISH CANNABIS can be reached on +44 (0) 203 965 2420 or via email at info@britishcannabis.org

Warning issued after U.S. firm contacts EU residents on the internet – Food Safety News

Posted: January 3, 2022 at 2:05 am

Food safety officials in Luxembourg have issued a warning after a company in the United States contacted residents about dietary supplements.

The Food Safety Unit of the National Health Directorate said it has learned of an incident in which an unnamed business based in the United States approached people in Luxembourg on social media to recruit them to sell their products in Europe. Initial contact was accompanied by scientific articles aiming to show effectiveness of the products.

These food supplements have questionable claims and are potentially non-compliant with European regulations, according to the authority.

The Food Safety Unit said anyone accepting such a proposal would take responsibility for ensuring compliance with the requirements of food law. It urged people to remain vigilant in the face of such offers.

Food safety: Role of businessesEuropean legislation defines a food business operator as the natural or legal person(s) responsible for ensuring that the requirements of food law are met within the business under their control.

A food business is defined as any public or private company carrying out, for profit or not, activities related to any stage of production, processing and distribution of food.

Other regulation states the food business responsible for food information is the operator under whose name or business name the food is marketed or, if that company is not in Europe, the importer into the EU market.

Luxembourg is also still working on creating a single administration in charge of official controls in the food chain.

TheMinistry of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development and Ministry for Consumer Protections plan will join up the Food Safety Unit of the Health Directorate, Veterinary Services Administration, some services under the authority of the Administration of Technical Agricultural Services, and theGovernment Commissariat for Quality, Fraud and Food Safety.

Thedraft lawto create a new veterinary and food agency in Luxembourg wassubmitted in November 2020.

These will be the biggest healthy food trends in 2022 – MSNBC

Posted: at 2:05 am

The Covid-19 pandemic changed almost every aspect of our lives, including our diets.

There has been a shift toward home cooking. We got more creative in the kitchen. And a significant number of us actually increased our consumption of unhealthy snacks, desserts and sugary drinks.

So, whats in store for 2022, especially if youre looking to eat healthier?

Heres what I think will be some of the biggest healthy food trends in the New Year:

While new to the Americas, water lily seeds have been around in India for centuries. Light and fluffy with a texture like a cheese curl, these mildly flavored morsels are loaded with nutrients. Because theyre nearly tasteless on their own, these seeds are the perfect vehicle for added spices both sweet or savory. As a good plant source of essential amino acids protein, theyre also gluten free and full of vitaminsand they are waistline friendly with around 100 calories for a big handful.

While the battle of plant-based versus animal-based eating continues to rage, its becoming increasingly apparent that like most parts of nature, the best diet may be somewhere in between! Thats why more and more people are looking for balance by returning to eating like an omnivore which humans are engineered to be. As omnivores, we are physically able to digest both plant and animal proteins equally welland that variety supports optimal health.

Incorporating foods in both the animal and plant worlds is the basis of whats known as flexitarian eatingbut the balance it up to you. And a related concept has now entered this arena: reducetarian eating, meaning an intentional shift towards plant-based eating, but still including animal products.

Along with the continued interest in plant-based foods (especially for meat substitutes), mushrooms are becoming ultra popular. Mushrooms of all types have a meaty-like texture and taste, and serve as an authentic swap for meatthink a grilled Portobello mushroom instead of a burger on a toasted bun. The umami flavor predominates in mushrooms, making them a savory and flavorful treat on their own, or as part of a soup, stew, or even jerky!

While Asian cuisine spans all several regional areas, the traditional flavors from Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Singapore and the Philippines, are gaining a stronger hold on everyday eating. Many of the widely used basic ingredients include Jasmine rice, garlic, ginger, sesame seeds, chilies, dried onions, and soy proteins (tofu, tempeh). Foods are often steamed, boiled or stir-fried.

The uniqueness of Southeast Asian flavors is all about combinations creating complex flavors. Think citrus and basil, or lime and cilantro. More unusual signature ingredientslike tamarind and lemongrassare readily available in most supermarkets.

Its a healthy way of cooking and eating that requires only a few new ingredients to freshen up your daily meals.

Our immune system is the foundation of good health, and there are several ways to strengthen it. One is with a trip to your local supermarket. While food supports a healthy immune system as part of a healthy lifestyleany positive impact is the result of long-term eating patterns. Thats what puts the life in lifestyle! And these benefits come from real foodno shortcuts with supplements that can only support, not replace healthy eating. Whether eaten as a stand-alone or used in a recipe, are some top foods to mix and match that support a healthy immune system:

Canned, bottled, or freshly made, alcohol-free alternatives are growing in popularity and availability. With a complex taste, and some tasting similar to classic cocktailstheyre a great option for those looking for something more than a seltzer and splash of juice. With people cutting back or eliminating alcohol altogether these creative alternatives create a comfortable option whether youre in a restaurant, bar, or at home.

With escalating food prices, and supply chain issues impacting supermarkets across the country, cooking at home will be shifting to a more downsized, streamlined approach. Recipes will be simplified, using more limited basic ingredients obtained locally. Easily prepared fresh foods will shine, with optimal nutrient content and visual appeal, and extending to healthier versions of comfort foods (think mac and cheese or chicken pot pie)
