The greatest thing to ever happen to Las Vegas, Local casino owner shares excitement over underground tunnel expansion – KLAS – 8 News Now

Posted: at 12:12 pm

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) After Clark County Commissioners approved plans to expand the Vegas Loop underground transportation system Wednesday, a local casino owner shared his excitement over the proposal.

People talk about the old days, Kenny Epstein told 8 News Now of Las Vegas. Today is better than its ever been.

Epstein owns and operates El Cortez Hotel & Casino; hes also dedicated decades to our local gaming industry.

He and El Cortez Chief Operating Officer Mike Nolan said they cant wait to see the system operate right outside the iconic, downtown property.

This has to be the greatest thing to ever happen to Las Vegas, Epstein exclaimed.

Clark County Commissioners approved plans to expand the tunnel system to 29 miles Wednesday. It will feature 51 stops from McCarran International Airport to the Las Vegas Strip, downtown, and even UNLV.

This project is going to be a game-changer for the city, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority CEO Steve Hill told 8 News Now of the Vegas Loop expansion.

He said the system, which will be built and funded by Elon Musks Boring Company, is a great way to cut down on traffic congestion while boosting business.

It allows our visitors, our customers to experience everything we have here, Hill added. In a fun and convenient way.

As for Epstein and Nolan, they said they are thrilled to have more exposure on their side of the city, as we travel by electric car right into the future.

It allows people to travel down here, Nolan said, referring to downtown. And our people who are staying downtown, to travel to other areas too.

Just make it better, Epstein concluded.Better for everyone.

The Las Vegas Convention Center Loop is currently functioning, with 1.7 miles of tunnel and three stations.

Hill told 8 News Now the expansion of that tunnel to Resorts World is about halfway done and should be complete by the first quarter of 2022.

Hill said construction for the full expansion should start in the next 6 to 12 months, with the full project complete in the next few years.

QAnon-linked convention kicks off in Las Vegas with misinformation – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Posted: at 12:12 pm

The QAnon-linked convention that kicked off in Las Vegas on Friday has served up misinformation on the predictable topics.

On Saturday, speakers at the For God and Country Patriot Double Down event riled the couple hundred people who showed up to the Ahern Hotel by spouting unfounded claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 election and casting doubt on COVID-19 vaccines.

We know there was election fraud, are you kidding? said Jason Sullivan, a social media strategist for Donald Trumps 2016 presidential campaign. Were done trying to prove that it happened. Were about to turn it around.

Others will have to prove they provided a secure election system, he told attendees. Sullivan later led the crowd in chants of Sheep no more!

The convention, organized by The Patriot Voice, faced an uncertain future when Caesars Entertainment dropped the event in August. The event drew media coverage for using QAnon imagery in its advertising materials. Last month, the convention found a new venue in the Ahern Hotel.

The QAnon conspiracy started in the fringes of the internet in 2017 but has crept into mainstream right-wing politics. Followers believe a secret group of Satan-worshipping, cannibalistic pedophiles control the deep state government.

Andre Popa, the events emcee on Saturday, told the crowd that government leaders are paid off to work against the public.

One attendee said during the event that they planned to put up signs asking what really happened during 9/11, a question Popa called beautiful.

Popa also raised questions about the COVID-19 vaccines, which health officials say are safe and effective.

When theyre talking about the vax, this aint no vax, Popa said. Because typically when youre getting the flu jab thing, its supposed to have the flu in it so the body builds its stuff. So is the thing today in this juice? So then how can it be? Therefore its not. So then the question is, what is it?

On the second floor of the event area, Trump hats and shirts were for sale at a merchandise stand with a Trump won flag draped over the front. Flags hanging over a railing that were visible from the ground floor said Trump is still my president and Stop the steal.

Despite numerous legal challenges, no evidence has emerged to suggest there was widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election.

Media access to the event was highly restricted. A Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter was escorted by event staff, confined to one area and told to leave shortly before noon.

Shawn Sudduth, an executive assistant for one of the events organizers, said he doesnt think there is widespread belief in the secret cabal of cannibals conspiracy, and that the people behind the event on Saturday are not those people.

He said the media has misrepresented QAnon as an organization, and that the movement is about a search for truth. This weekends convention is not a QAnon event, but just an opportunity to bring God-loving American patriots together, he said.

He did say its possible the cannibalistic pedophile group does exist because people are capable of all sorts of things.

The FBI has recognized QAnon as a potential domestic terror threat, but Sudduth said the people in attendance want peace.

Well, the federal government has a long history of lying, he said. It has a long history of being a corrupt institution.

The convention is scheduled to run through Monday. Nevada secretary of state candidate Jim Marchant, a former assemblyman, is scheduled to speak at the conference.

How to watch EDC Las Vegas 2021 live stream and set times guide – The Groove Cartel

Posted: at 12:12 pm

Last updated:October 24, 2021

The legendary Electric Daisy Carnival, EDC Las Vegas will return, after a year hiatus because of the pandemic, in its historic location: Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The festival will run from tomorrow, October the 22nd all the way to Sunday, the 24th. 2021 edition will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the festival.

For the first time in its history, Electric Daisy Carnival will live stream the entire festival via Roblox. EDC has created a virtual space called Insomniac World Party where you will be able to enjoy all the live sets from the festival. The virtual space has been open since yesterday. It includes four stages from the festival ground. As attendees in the metaverse move from stage to stage, the music changes.

The festivals actual sets will be streamed on Roblox 24 hours after their in-person performances, with select artists joining shows inside the experience. Acts will perform on the same stage in the metaverse as they did at the live event, emulating real-world performances in the digital realm.

Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas has set up 8 + 1 channels for the live stream. KineticFIELD, CircuitGROUNDS, CosmicMEADOW, and BassPOD are all streamed live. Some of them may broadcast only audio during selected performances. Check below.

The whole festival is also available via Insomniac TV.

Cosmic Meadow will open early, as seems to be the custom in the past editions. It will be all about house music. On Friday, John Summit will perform a short set, as well as a tasty Vintage Culture b2b Solardo. On Saturday we suggest to not missing the special Diplo b2b Lee Foss house set. Finally, on Sunday, Blossom, and Z-Trip will kick things off.

The official opening hour for the festival is 7 PM; if you have the energy to start things off early, there are still some acts to see. Frank Walker will perform at Kinetic Field, and Moore Kismet at Cosmic Meadow. Lucati is opening Circuit Grounds if you need some house music.

If youre around at 9 PM, we suggest going over Kinetic Field for Nicky Romero; at the same time, Claptone takes the stage at Circuit Grounds. At 11:15 PM, Don Diablo takes over Kinetic, but at this point, you have to choose as Tchami will perform at Circuit Grounds at the same time.

From now on, things are getting interesting. The Chainsmokers will perform at 12:28 PM at Kinetic; it will be one of their first show since the pandemic. Zhu will perform at 12:00 PM at Cosmic Meadow, NGHTMRE will light up Basspod, and Alison Wonderland will perform at 12:45 pm at Circuit Grounds. Even you if will chose a stage randomly, youll definitely end up listening to some quality music. We would like to suggest going over The Chainsmokers as they may drop some new stuff. Following that Alesso will take over Kinetic. We highly suggest going there as every year he played new music at EDC Las Vegas. Another interesting performance will be at Basspod where Kayzo b2b Knife Party set will take place.

Day 1 was pretty intensive but Day 2 schedule is no different. At 8:45 PM we suggest going over Circuit Ground for the legendary Benny Benassi. At the same time, Oliver Heldens will also play so, a smart move would be to listen to a half set of both.

After that, Diplo at Cosmic Meadow is the most intuitive choice. Now, things got complicated with Martin Garrix at Circuit Grounds, where hell undoubtedly drop a slew of new IDs, and Tiesto at the Kinetic. If we were you, we would head over Circuit Grounds for the simple reason that, you will have Deadmau5 right after him.

DJ Snake is scheduled for Kinetic, and he brings it every time he performs at EDC. If youre an Anjuna fun, as we are, you wont miss Ilan Bluestone light up Quantum Valley.

Groove Cartels favorite, Charlotte de Witte will play at Neon Garden with Vintage Culture closing Kinetic.

EDC gives you a chance to catch your breath, kind of, on Sunday. We suggest ARTY at Kinetic and Throttle at Circuit Grounds.

If theres a performance you cant miss, its Eric Prydz at midnight. Cosmic Meadow will host Zedd. Alternatively, Kygo at Kinetic.

Oakland As stadium saga continues at both Howard Terminal and Las Vegas – Athletics Nation

Posted: at 12:12 pm

The Oakland As 2021 season is over, but new rumblings are beginning in the eternal quest for a new stadium.

When we last checked in, back in July, the Oakland City Council approved a non-binding term sheet for the Howard Terminal ballpark and surrounding development. However, it wasnt quite the same terms the team had proposed, meaning the two sides still had details to figure out regarding funding. One possible solution involved money being chipped in by Alameda County, and the county was set to discuss the matter in late October.

In the meantime, the As are keeping the option of relocation on the table in case they dont work out a deal to stay in the Bay Area. Theyve continued to explore options in Las Vegas.

Here are the latest updates.

On Tuesday, the Hayward City Council put support behind getting the county involved in the As project. They voted to recommend Alameda County look at opting in to the tax district capturing tax revenue beyond whats already there to cover some of the infrastructure improvements for the Athletics Howard Terminal ballpark development, reports Ron Leuty of the SF Business Times.

Also this week, Keith Carson, President of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, said the following in a letter to colleagues, via Brodie Brazil of NBCS:

On September 19th I received a letter from Supervisors Haubert and Valle regarding the Oakland As Stadium item set for discussion on Tuesday, October 26th.

Per the request of Supervisors Haubert and Valle I am placing this item on the October 26, 2021, Board of Supervisors agenda as a 12:00pm Set Matter, for discussion and possible action on a resolution declaring the County of Alamedas non-binding intent to contribute the Countys share of incremental property taxes to finance portions of the City of Oaklands Waterfront Ballpark at Howard Terminal for 45 years through an Enhanced Infrastructure Financing District (EIFD).

On Friday, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said the following to Casey Pratt of ABC7:

I feel very confident there will be a (County) vote on Tuesday and that vote will be YES. I commend the county for the due diligence that they have performed over these last several weeks, to really dig into the numbers and economic benefits for them and their mission particularly to deliver on public health.

Pratt continued with some analysis:

The Alameda County Board of Supervisors vote would be non-binding. Its important they sign on to the on-site IFD so key parts of the deal can be finalized. Anything but an affirmative YES vote will confirm to the Commissioner of Major League Baseball that there is not a path. So whats next?? Once the County signs on, they can reach a final financial plan. The EIR release is expected before the end of the year. Development Agreement would come shortly after. All these things are needed before binding vote.

The next step comes on Oct. 26, with the county hopefully having a vote and choosing yes.

Two decades into their stadium saga, the As and MLB are playing hardball this time around. While the process continues here in the Bay Area, the As have also begun reaching out to Las Vegas about the possibility of moving there.

Last week in an interview with the Sports Business Journal, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred cast pessimism on keeping the As in Oakland, and again broached the idea of relocation:

Its dragged on so long. Frankly, in some ways, were not sure we see a path to success in terms of getting something built in Oakland.

After the World Series is over, the As are expected to announce a list of finalists among potential locations in Vegas.

***

None of this provides any new answers, but its progress. There might be a real update about Howard Terminal next week, and the team isnt easing off the pressure as they keep escalating their public flirtation with Vegas.

Nevada governor found at-fault in weekend crash in Las Vegas – Associated Press

Posted: at 12:12 pm

LAS VEGAS (AP) Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak was found at-fault, and he and another driver were each ticketed for traffic infractions following a two-car crash during the weekend in Las Vegas, according to a police report.

The Democratic governor, who was driving alone without a security detail, and the 30-year-old woman driving the other vehicle were each treated for minor injuries after the Sunday afternoon crash at a busy intersection several miles west of the Las Vegas Strip, according to an accident report released Wednesday.

Sisolak, 67, was cited for failure to yield to oncoming traffic. The woman was ticketed for speeding.

Sisolaks Lexus SUV turned left at a traffic signal on a flashing yellow arrow into the path of the womans Nissan Sentra, which police said had a green light.

The woman was not identified. Police said the crash was captured on surveillance video from a business near the scene.

The governors SUV spun around and crashed into landscaping while the Nissan struck a traffic signal pole, knocking it over.

A sobriety test was administered to the woman, but not to the governor, police said. No signs of impairment were observed.

Sisolaks office said Thursday the crash occurred while the governor was on his way to a family members home and referred questions to Las Vegas police and Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

Las Vegas man ordered to spend rest of his life in jail – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Posted: at 12:12 pm

A Las Vegas man who pleaded guilty to killing three people in 2016 was ordered Friday to spend the rest of his life in jail.

Alonso Perez, 30, was sentenced Friday in five separate cases stemming from a series of crimes, including the three killings, robbery with a deadly weapon, attempted murder with a deadly weapon, battery with a deadly weapon, grand larceny and conspiracy.

Although prosecutors stopped pursuing the death penalty for Perez in exchange for the guilty pleas he made in August, prosecutor Michael Schwartzer said Perez still represents the worst of the worst of criminals.

This is an individual that murdered three individuals in a two-week span, Schwartzer said. And it wasnt from a lack of trying.

District Judge Tierra Jones sentenced Perez to three back-to-back life terms without the possibility of parole for the killings of 31-year-old Mohammed Robinson, 50-year-old Jeffrey Johnson and 37-year-old Candelario Duran.

After Perez was arrested in connection with Robinsons death, he escaped from the North Las Vegas Police Department detective bureau by snapping his handcuffs in half, standing on a chair, shifting a ceiling tile and hoisting himself into a crawlspace.

He then drove away in a rental truck that had been left outside the building with its engine running, but he was recaptured within days.

About three hours after Robinson was killed on Aug. 27, 2016, Perez shot Johnson, police have said. Johnson and his wife had driven to a friends house on his motorcycle, and when they arrived, they spotted a man in the friends yard. Johnsons wife got off the motorcycle, and when Johnson approached the man he was shot in the head at least twice.

There was just no reason to kill him, Johnsons wife, Amy Johnson, said Friday in between sobs. He didnt say anything to him, he didnt do anything to him.

At least one of the bullet casings collected at the scene of Johnsons slaying matched casings found in Robinsons shooting, a police report at the time stated. Shells also were linked to a pair of separate shootings, including the one that left Duran dead, that same month.

Perez did not make a statement during Fridays hearing, but Alzora Jackson, one of his defense attorneys, told the judge he had taken responsibility for his crimes.

He wanted me to say to the people that he harmed: He has no words, Jackson said. This is all that he can do, and he has done that with great humility and great respect.

Selene Duran, Candelario Durans daughter, told the judge there were no excuses for Perezs actions.

Nothing is going to bring my father back, she said. And I dont forgive. He didnt have sympathy, I dont have sympathy either.

Las Vegass Next Great Steakhouse Isnt on the Strip – Robb Report

Posted: at 12:12 pm

Las Vegas chef Gina Marinelli is getting ready to debut her version of an elegant steakhouse, so naturally shes been thinking about premium beef and caviar service and the Las Vegas Raiders.

For Marinelli, it starts with meticulously sourcing meat. Harlo, a Downtown Summerlin steakhouse that plans to have its soft opening on October 25, will cook steaks like Western Reserve filets and Allen Brothers bone-in rib eyes on a wood-fired grill. Marinelli will serve 60-day wet-aged Icon XB wagyu, which ages when it travels from Australia by boat. Shes excited about having California Holstein steaks, including massive 28-day dry-aged bisteccas alla Fiorentina, from Flannery Beef. Shell also serve Flannerys beloved Jorge cut, which is a thick steak with a full rib from the chuck end of a prime rib.

Marinelli is a big fan of Flannerys steaks and also of the narrative behind the meat. Flannery Beef is a family business run by a father-daughter team, Bryan and Katie Flannery, and their beautifully marbled beef is from dairy cattle.

Its not going to be a steak that goes all the way across the plate like people are kind of used to, Marinelli says. This is going to stand up super thick, and it has such a presence. But dry-aging is what Flannery is known for. Theres something magical about the mold that Katie has developed inside that dry-aging room. Shes actually trying to study the DNA sequence of the mold. I just love partnering with her. I love seeing another powerful woman coming forward and producing a cut of beef that people arent typically going to see out here in Vegas yet.

Marinelli, who was the executive chef at Scott Conants D.O.C.G. at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas before she opened game-changing off-Strip Italian sensation La Strega in 2019, is driven by a desire to give Las Vegas new experiences. At Harlo, a 180-seat colossus thats twice the size of La Strega, she will up the ante with caviar service thats purposefully unlike anything else in Las Vegas.

Chef Gina Marinelli is following up her hit Italian restaurant.Photo: courtesy Harlo

When we opened La Strega, we started to bring in caviar from Italy and it really kind of took off and it was fun, she says. I used to go to The Riddler in San Francisco and I loved the way they did caviar. It was, like, very bougie but playful.

So at Harlo, Marinelli will serve Bulgarian caviar (which is harvested by the family of Bulgarian-born Vegas chef Nina Manchev, who runs Forte Tapas) with accompaniments like scallion pancakes, gnocco fritto and latkes.

Its going to be on a caviar cart, and everythings going to get weighed, and its really going to be an over-the-top and fun way to enjoy caviar, Marinelli says.

Harlo is the latest restaurant developed by The Lev Group, the off-Strip hospitality powerhouse behind La Strega and Al Solito Posto. And this steakhouse is opening at a shopping center in Summerlin because the team behind Harlo recognizes a prime opportunity in an affluent community known for its philanthropy and its mansions inhabited by casino bosses, pro athletes and other A-listers.

Las Vegas is underserved off the Strip, says Jeffrey Fine, CEO of The Lev Group. All the focus for a long time was Strip restaurants while other cities were building out their local restaurant scene. Were just seeing a huge underserved market for off-the-Strip restaurants. Theres a need for the right concepts in the right places, doing the right things and doing the things that were going to do here.

One factor that should add buzz to Harlo is Marinellis direct tie to the Las Vegas Raiders. Her father, Rod, is the defensive line coach for the NFL franchise. Shes cooked for events at the teams headquarters and also made dinner for some of the players at La Strega.

Obviously, my father is going to go wherever I am, Marinelli says. If I open a hot dog stand, hes going to be my number one client. I know hell be supportive. But whats also nice is that we have a place for these players to come and really feel comfortable. Were just here to cook for them. They feel really at ease. Its good that they know they can go to the steakhouse, have a quiet booth in the corner and get treated great. Itll feel like family because thats what this is. Hopefully when were celebrating wins, they can come out here and have a great piece of meat.

What Marinelli promises is an experience that rivals top-tier Strip restaurants, with everything from the martinis to the desserts living up to the standards of high-end casinos. Harlo, she stresses, is a restaurant staffed with kitchen veterans and front-of-the-house aces from the Strip.

The food is going to be the same quality, same integrity as the Strip, she says. But Im going to highlight the service and the way its going to feel in here. The level of service is going to be superior than whats on the Strip. We have people that have been at Costa di Mare, Giada and the NoMad, and were kind of like a motley crew that has come together to produce one of the best restaurants in the city.

Marinelli is sourcing meat from the outstanding Flannery Beef in California.courtesy Flannery

Marinelli can do caviar service the way she wants because Harlo has a talented pastry chef, Alberto Rodriguez, that she previously worked with at The Cosmopolitan. Rodriguez is creating breads, lavash, seasonal souffles, chocolate cake and a dessert that Harlo is calling pumpkin patch while he also fine-tunes what will be on the caviar cart.

Dont worry, Marinelli says. He hates me right now, but its going to be incredible. We just sprinkle a lot of global infusions and a little bit of Italian on some things.

And while Harlo isnt intended to be an Italian steakhouse, fans of Marinellis cooking at La Strega will be happy to know that they can order steaks with a side of baked pasta. For example, Marinellis planning to serve baked rigatoni with a spicy puttanesca sauce and also will make vegetarian truffle-ricotta raviolini with celery-root butter and maitake mushrooms.

Another way Harlo wants to distinguish itself from other steakhouses is with its riffs on seafood towers. In addition to crudo and chilled shellfish, there will be hot seafood towers with smoked chili butter and grilled bread. Imagine lobster, king crab, mussels, clams, bay scallops, slices of fish and an elaborate presentation involving candles and a paella pan.

Its going to showcase all that seafood coming together, mixed together, all the shells coming together, all the liquid coming out of them, Marinelli says. Im telling you, you sell one and the whole dining rooms going to smell it and thats what theyre gonna want to order.

STEVE SEBELIUS: Is there substance behind the Fiore flash? – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Posted: at 12:12 pm

Give Las Vegas City Councilwoman Michele Fiore credit for a rare feat: She kept the announcement that she was running for governor of Nevada secret until the very last second.

Given the news that Fiores home was raided by the FBI and that she initially said shed be joined at Wednesdays news conference by her attorney, we figured her announcement was legal, not political.

Instead, with supporters arrayed behind her and a staffer quickly slapping a Fiore placard onto the podium at the Italian American Club, she surprised everybody.

Fiores name has been floated as a candidate for several offices, including Las Vegas mayor. I will be kicking (fellow Las Vegas Councilman Cedric) Crears A** in the mayors race. Mayor Fiore sounds pretty dam (sic) good to me, Fiore said on Twitter in March.

But even better than her live-action announcement was Fiores gubernatorial launch video. It depicts her alighting from her Ford pickup to declare her fealty to Donald Trump and disdain for the same old boring, moderate, compromised, blue-blazer politicians.

She then shoots some beer bottles symbolizing critical race theory, mask mandates and voter fraud before declaring, The Joe Biden administration is coming after me. Im Michele Fiore and Im ready for the fight.

Oh, shes ready to fight, all right. If you doubt it, ask her fellow Republican council colleague Victoria Seaman, who alleged in court documents that Fiore broke her finger during a City Hall scuffle.

But seriously, Fiore has done well only when running in small districts. Look at the numbers: She has never earned more than 14,240 votes in any non-political party election shes ever run in. Shes never represented more than 82,000 constituents in any office shes ever held. (Fiore does serve as Nevadas Republican national committeewoman.)

She came in second in 2010 in the Republican primary for the 1st Congressional District with 22 percent of the vote. In 2016, she ran in the GOP primary for the 3rd Congressional District and ended up in third place with 18 percent, behind Danny Tarkanian and former state Senate Majority Leader Michael Roberson.

Will she do better this time? The question assumes shes actually going to file, instead of using the campaign to raise money. Her reference to the Biden administration being after her (read: being under investigation for alleged crimes) suggests a run for office might be more of a political shield than a real campaign.

No matter her intent, Fiores entry had Republicans reaching for the Tylenol, and Democrats going back to church. The already-crowded primary is going to be difficult enough without Fiore taking votes and money away from fellow southerners Joe Lombardo and John Lee. Her positioning as a Trump believer rivals Reno attorney Joey Gilbert, who loves the former president more than Trumps own sons. And her presence, should she file and see it through until June, will draw even more Trump base voters to the polls, which isnt good news for more moderate candidates such as Lombardo and ex-U.S. Sen. Dean Heller.

Fiore is known for many things. She loves guns and poses with them for Christmas cards. She once told fellow Republican Chris Edwards to sit your ass down on the Assembly floor, earning her a rebuke from the body. She awkwardly tried to compliment former Assemblyman Harvey Munford by noting he was the first colored man to graduate from his college. She drew criticism when she took issue with affirmative action and used what were reported as racially charged comments in a speech. She once tried to justify drawing down on the police.

Fight? Oh, shes got a lot of it. But mass appeal? That remains to be seen. And how far her gun-toting, Trump-loving, pickup-driving, moderate-slamming, mask mandate-hating persona goes even in a Republican primary is still very much an open question.
