Google Cloud Catches Up to AWS and Azure with VMware Offering – Virtualization Review

VMware virtualization tech is springing up all over in the cloud computing space, with Google Cloud announcing a VMware offering just 10 days after Microsoft did the same for its Azure cloud.

Google had last July announced the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) would begin to support VMware workloads in a new partnership. This week that partnership progressed with the fully managed Google Cloud VMware Engine service, which lets enterprises run VMware workloads natively on Google Cloud.

Specifically, it provides a VMware Cloud Foundation stack, a hybrid cloud platform for managing virtual machines (VMs) and orchestrating containers. The stack on Google Cloud consists of:

The offering lets organizations connect to a dedicated VMware environment directly through the Google Cloud Console.

Google said the service helps organizations quickly extend on-premises workloads to the cloud or migrate them completely whlie providing the ability to tap into cloud services like BigQuery, Cloud Operations, Cloud Storage, Anthos, and Cloud AI.

The service is expected to be generally available this quarter in two US regions, with global expansion planned for the second half of the year.

The announcement came 10 days after Microsoft announced an Azure VMware Solution in preview.

Years before that, VMware had teamed up with cloud computing leader Amazon Web Services (AWS) for a "VMware Cloud on AWS" solution.

Writing about the IBM Edge Ecosystem in a recent blog, Evaristus Mainsah, GM of the Cloud Paks Ecosystem, noted that, making the promise of edge a reality requires an open ecosystem with diverse participants. The goal of its ecosystem development play is enable customers to move data and applications seamlessly between private data centers, hybrid multi-cloud environments and the edgeIBM business partners can help their clients take advantage of 5G while acting on insights closer to where data is created by people, places and things.

Singapore has identified several key verticals for 5G adoption including healthcare, manufacturing and maritime and has set aside SG$40 million to develop the necessary supporting infrastructure and ecosystem.

Operators have, across the board, acknowledged the importance of edge computing in delivering a differentiated, revenue-generating 5G service. There have also been a number of trials in key mobile markets. But, given the trajectory of network investment and product development, were not quite there yetmore in an ideation, strategy stage. Cloud and IT providers, already deeply involved in the enterprise (including telco) market and sensing a chance to bolster sales across the board with the move the edge, have developed fairly complete edge narratives that incorporate 5G and hybrid cloud computing.

Be on the lookout for strategic and messaging commonalities. Among them, the role of ecosystem development in delivering semi-bespoke systems that combine cellular, compute and IoT to meet the specific needs of vertical industries. Artificial intelligence is another big one; in the march to automate everything, AI-based decision making requires data processing very close to the data source. And then theres cloud. Cloud services will extend onto premises of enterprise and SMB, but the central offices and backhaul aggregation sites, even the cell will become the edge of the telco network, Kevin Shatzkamer, VP/GM of Service Provider Solutions, Dell Technologies, explained.

He continued: I think thats where it needs to be made there are just some services that are not conducive to massively-scaled centralized data centers. They are too immersive, too real-time, and too data-intensive. If you look at the new services that 5G is going to enable, built on a new mobile architecture, the edge is where the play is. Its where service providers, our partners, can differentiate themselves and its going to create a lot of new opportunities for them.

Dell Technologies has a variety of edge products tailored for both operator and enterprise needs, including ruggedized units designed for deployment in challenging environmental conditions and modular data centers

The idea is to use Dell Technologies OEM Embedded and Edge Solutions hardware and Ekinops middleware to simplify site connectivity and virtualized network management. The enterprise user will be able to remotely install virtualized network functions at any site and run functions, including routers, firewalls, SD-WAN and WAN optimization on the single uCPE.

Our global enterprise customers require increased flexibility in terms of connectivity solutions and infrastructure optimization. This uCPE solutionwill give enterprises further choice in terms of deployment and reinforces our ecosystem-based approach. Keeping with this idea of what Thiollet called an ecosystem-based approach, Dell Technologies has partnered with system integrator World Wide Technology to open a 5G-focused Center of Excellence in St. Louis, Missouri. The facility will accelerate the deployment of complex, multi-vendor, open source solutions for the service provider industry, according to WWT. The company said the CoE will initially explore mobile edge computing, the internet of things, telco cloud, data analytics and NFV.

Implementing its enterprise-edge strategy, BT is using the Dell Virtual Edge Platform family of uCPEsachieving hardware consolidation and service flexibility at distributed consumer locations while cutting back on the need for dedicated servers and appliances. BT will use the technology to offer managed services, including on-prem network functions virtualization and support for IoT and IT applications. Scott Cowling, global network solutions director for BT, said, with Dells Virtual Edge Platform, We are providing not only choice, but also ways to de-risk technology decisions and speed up and remove complexity from their global network service deployments.

IBM during its recent Think Digital conference discussed the intersection of 5G, edge computing and hybrid-cloud computing models. The company laid out its new IBM Edge Ecosystemcharacterized as focused on bringing open standards-based cloud native solutions that can be deployed and autonomously managed at the edge at massive scale along with new edge and related solutions geared toward both carriers and enterprises.

The notion of ecosystem development is a recurring part of the edge conversation. The idea is that a diversity of technologies and use cases need to be developed, requiring buy-in and coordination between not just technology vendors and network operators but also the end users who have unique problems. Similar technology can be brought to bear for AI-based video analytics for manufacturing quality control and access control for a commercial high-rise, but the buyer will have specific requirements related to its own IT structure, desired outcome, security and so forth.

Writing about the IBM Edge Ecosystem in a recent blog, Evaristus Mainsah, GM of the Cloud Paks Ecosystem, noted that, making the promise of edge a reality requires an open ecosystem with diverse participants. The goal of its ecosystem development play is enable customers to move data and applications seamlessly between private data centers, hybrid multi-cloud environments and the edgeIBM business partners can help their clients take advantage of 5G while acting on insights closer to where data is created by people, places and things.

Specific edge products announced at IBM Think Digital include:

Core to the edge value proposition is near real-time ability to process data, largely data collected from IoT devices which run the gamut from HD cameras and motion sensors to drones and manufacturing robotics. Point being, 5G is complex and enabling the edge through a combination of distributed and centralized computing resources is just another vector of complexity.

As IBMs Marisa Viveros, vice president of strategy and offerings, Telecom, Media and Entertainment Industry, IBM Industry Platform, put it in a blog, in order to deliver innovative new 5G services, service providers need to act quickly as 5G becomes more availableAs we advance into the world of 5G, providers will need to transform their networks into hybrid multi-cloud platforms that can support large volumes of data and that can rapidly adapt to new challenges.

To get an idea of what this looks like in practice, IBM is working Singaporean carrier M1 and Samsung to trial 5G for manufacturing, including the use of AI and augmented reality for things like video analytics and predictive maintenance. Singapore has identified several key verticals for 5G adoption including healthcare, manufacturing and maritime and has set aside SG$40 million to develop the necessary supporting infrastructure and ecosystem.

Reflecting on IBMs telco cloud and edge announcements in a piece published by Forbes, Will Townsend, senior analyst, Carriers and Enterprise Networking, at Moor Insights and Strategy, described the companys goal as creating blueprints to speed operator deployment of 5G edge-enabled solutions that have the potential to drive disruption in manufacturing, supply chain management, and more. IBM has incredible depth from a services perspective, and I expect that operators will see the value.

In a recent earnings call, preceded by its acquisition of virtualized Evolved Packet Core specialist Affirmed Networks, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella provided insight into the companys ambitions around supporting 5G applications at the network edge. From a product perspective, this encompassed Azure Edge Zones and Azure Private Edge Zones, former meant to connect directly to 5G networks and the latter a private LTE/5G network combined with on-premises Azure Stack Edge.

Nadella said Microsoft has the only cloud that extends to the edge, with consistency across operating models, development environments, and infrastructure stack. He said Azure Edge Zones and 5G will enable immersive, real-time experiences that require ultra-low latency. And our acquisition of Affirmed Networks will help operators deploy and maintain 5G networks and services cost effectively and securely.

For some time now, Microsoft has been working with operators on integrating edge computing capabilities with 5G networks and Azure cloud services, with AT&T being one of the companys most notable 5G partners. At Mobile World Congress in 2019, AT&T announced its partnership with Microsoft for the development of a proof of concept to integrate network edge compute capabilities using its 5G network in conjunction with Azure cloud services, a solution that both companys characterized as important for IoT use cases in a number of industries including retail, healthcare, public safety, entertainment, and manufacturing.

Nadella said the edge zones initiative and Affirmed acquisition speaks to I think what is going to be the secular infrastructure architecture going forward. Its not just about migrating off-premise, but its going to be able to have an architecture that supports the needs where edge compute is increasingly going to be very important.

In a blog post on the Azure Edge Zones strategy, Microsoft Corporate VP, Azure Networking, Yousef Khalidi laid out the big picture. Cloud, edge computing, and IoT are making strides to transform whole industries and create opportunities that werent possible just a few years ago. With the rise of 5G mobile connectivity, there are even more possibilities to deliver immersive, real-time experiences that have demanding, ultra-low latency, and connectivity requirements. 5G opens new frontiers with enhanced mobile broadband up to 10x faster, reliable low-latency communication, and very high device density up to 1 million devices per square kilometer.

For carriers, Microsoft called out opportunities around online gaming, remote meetings and events and smart infrastructure. Target verticals for the Azure Private Edge Zones, as delineated in the blog post, include IoT for smart factories, logistics and operations, and connected health care.

Analyst Jim Patterson posed the provocative question, Is Microsoft the new Ericsson?, concluding that the company is positioning itself to play a bigger role in telecom. Beyond the Affirmed acquisition and the edge zones, Theres a lot more to do to compete with Ericsson, Patterson wrote. He said, its unlikely that Microsoft would focus its energies on integrating LTE into 5G (they might start with private networks that only interoperate at the 5G level using the 5G standalone or SA standard). But Microsoft is definitely taking steps to replace traditional telecom infrastructure providers and firmly detach operating systems from hardware. And they have $137 billion in cash and marketable securities on their balance sheet, a global presence, and the ear of every Fortune 1000 Global CIO.

Edge computing is a broad term that, at a high-level simply means moving computing out of data centers and closer to where applications are running, but has specific qualities that pin what specific edge being referenced to the requirements of an application.

To understand where the telco edge is, think first of an operators existing footprint, including pooled and standalone base stations, macro radio sites, colocation facilities, etcIn the context of a consumer 5G application like mobile gaming, putting compute at existing sites would pass on the latency benefits to the consumer by way of an improved mobile gaming experience with less jitter and lag and more responsive controls.

For an enterprise, the edge, in many cases, sits at their facility. A manufacturer using 5G to connect robots needs to ingest, analyze and take action on machine-generated data in as close to real time as possible. If an operator is, for lack of a better term, selling edge computing as a service, favorable conditions could lead to placement of infrastructure that meets the specific customers needs as well as furthers the operators larger goals. Conversely, an enterprise, working with partners, could invest in a private network and the edge computing needed to maximize the value of the network.

So far these various edges have existed on the transmit side of the radio link, as far out as a radio site. However, as devices become more and more powerful, theres a case to be made for the device as the ultimate edge. Things like on-device artificial intelligence is backed up by the compute power necessary to use apps with voice-based interfaces and for virtual assistants to interface with our calendars and contacts. Then, as explained in the next section, is another edge also on the user side of the radio link but not handsets.

The point is, how you define edge is a function of the type of service being considered. The more latency dependent an application is, the closer computing should be to the user whether thats a person or a machine.

As laid out above, theres a case to be made for the handset as the ultimate edge given ongoing enhancements to on-device AI based on various hyper-local data inputs. Dan Picker, CTO of Inseego sees another edge, a bleeding edge, that resides on the user side of the 5G radio link but not the handsetrather devices like the companys 5G MiFi mobile hotspot which is compatible with the global New Radio standard and supports both sub-6 GHz and millimeter wave frequencies.

Picker made the case for using a dedicated piece of equipment to make highest and best use of both the 5G connection and the features of the handset. On the user side of the air link, Thats where Inseego plays, he said. We make access devices; we make edge devices These connect to phones, enterprise networks, gaming devices, AR/VR devices, HD cameras and other connected tech. What were doing with our devices is were putting a piece of edge compute power on the other side of the 5G link which is going to offer a ton of advantages.

Move to the other side of the 5G link. Thats where Inseego plays. We make access devices; we make edge devices. those connect to phones, enterprise networks, gaming devices, headsets, other AR/VR devices or HD cameras. 5G is great for these sorts of applications. What were doing with our devices is were putting a piece of edge compute power on the other side of the 5G link which is going to offer a ton of advantages.

Picker laid out scenarios highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of 5G and the location of the edge for much-hyped use caseartificial and virtual reality. For VR, consider a standalone headset where an application is running on a device and that applications content resides on-device. Thats the best possible case.

Now add in 5G. Content is delivered from the cloud in what Picker called a unidirectional manner. Relying on the cloud for more functionality means devices can get simpler and less expensive. This one-way flow from the cloud, over a 5G link, to a device works for VR but what about AR?

You might have now some cameras, Picker said. Now youre viewing the real world and youre mixing into that the content thats coming from the server. Now were dealing with a bi-directional stream. Latency suddenly makes a huge difference. This is where the edge cloud comes in. In this case, pretty much right up at the other side of the 5G link by the base station, processing and storage is brought into there. Now you avoid the bottleneck of having to go all the way through the internet to the cloud. Given that were in relatively early days of building out edge infrastructure, this scenario is perfectly viable but very much a work in progress.

So, in order to sustain multi-gigabit 5G throughput while taking advantage of edge computing, a dedicated device is the answer, Picker said. Now your handset can be used for what its meant to do. You put all the functionality into this edge device that not only provides the access to the cellular network but also handles a lot of that edge processing for you. Beyond handsets, this paradigm applies to connected cameras, gaming systems, headsets and other types of consumer and enterprise devices.

Moreover, specialized AI chips, along with immense processing power, storage and other advanced capabilities, will be added to a wider range of edge devices over the next five years. However, the extreme heterogeneity of this embedded IoT world and the long life cycles of assets such as industrial systems will pose significant management challenges. Although 5G matures, the expanding edge computing environment will have more robust communication back to centralized services. This next generation of network provides lower latency, higher bandwidth, and (very importantly for edge) a dramatic boost in the number of nodes (edge endpoints) per square km.

While IDC predicted the world will be producing175 Zettabytesof data by 2025, this will lead to many different types of distributed, decentralized architectures, bringing compute, storage and networking closer to the end-user from the mobile edge to the device, or IoT edge to the wireless edge. In addition to the increasing numbers of web users and a growing deployment of digital services will further boost the growth of the market in the near future.
