Ron Paul Backers Still Working, Just Not For Romney
Posted: at 6:43 pm
November 6, 2012 from WOI
With all the attention on the impending presidential election, it seems like no one's talking about Ron Paul anymore. His candidacy for the GOP nomination has been dead for months. But his passionate, young supporters are still organizing this time, around local candidates in several states, including Iowa. Their dissatisfaction with Mitt Romney could have implications for the top of ticket, too.

LYNN NEARY, HOST:
Early on in the election cycle, some voters were fired up about a candidate we haven't heard a lot from since the Republican primary. That's Ron Paul. The Texas congressman ran for the GOP nomination with a strong libertarian platform. He has not endorsed Mitt Romney. And in some places, including Iowa, his supporters are still involved but not on behalf of Romney. As we hear from Sarah McCammon of Iowa Public Radio, they're keeping their focus close to home.
UNIDENTIFIED MAN: We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union...
SARAH MCCAMMON, BYLINE: It's not every day you run across a couple of grown men dressed as the Founding Fathers, but Liberty Fest isn't every day, either. It's a cool, fall evening, in Hampton, a town of a few thousand residents in northern Iowa. And several dozen people, including lots of young families, have gathered near the town square for this event, billed as a celebration of the Constitution. Like most people here, Clayton Black supported Ron Paul for president in the Iowa caucuses.
CLAYTON BLACK: We're spending way too much time thinking about who's going to be our next president when we should be concentrating on who's going to be our next mayor or councilman or supervisor.
MCCAMMON: Black is in his early 60s and runs a bakery in another small town. He came to Liberty Fest dressed as a Revolutionary War-era militiaman.
BLACK: We get good people locally, and that's going to grow out.

TRENDING: Ron Paul foresees 2012 outcome
Posted: at 6:43 pm
(CNN) - It looks like neither Mitt Romney nor President Barack Obama will land the endorsement of former GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul in this final hour of election 2012.
In an Election Day interview on CNN's "Newsroom," the Texas congressman said he won't back either candidate because he sees little difference between them. Follow the Ticker on Twitter: @PoliticalTicker
Check out the CNN Electoral Map and Calculator and game out your own strategy for November.
"I don't think there's enough difference between the two candidates, and I assume the victor today will be the status quo," Paul said. "We're going to continue with basically the same policies that we've had for a long time, so I don't see the election, as the way its turning out, to be very crucial at all."
Meanwhile, the candidates have argued the importance of the election and sparred in a series of debates. They have also battered one another on the airwaves, where millions of dollars have been poured into advertising in a handful of key swing states.
Paul ended his active campaign efforts in May as his path to the nomination appeared mathematically impossible, though his delegates to state-level political conventions - which decide delegates to the Republican National Convention - continued to push for his long-shot bid.
At the Republican National Convention in Tampa, a video tribute to Paul was played, and the former candidate held a separate rally in the city. "I'm convinced that we're living at the end of an era," Paul said, saying the moment "provides an opportunity."
In his CNN interview, Paul said he is not concerned with the amount of money being spent in politics.
"I think we should be shocked to know that people are willing to put that much money up. Not that they did, but why are they doing it? Why have they been hoodwinked into thinking that there's a real contest going on? That's what the real problem is," he said. "But the fact that people can spend their money and they want to invest in politics, that's fine."
Pressed by CNN's Brooke Baldwin, Paul said, "what's wrong is all this money is [it's] being spent to influence and control and own government, to be used for their benefit."

Ron Paul: Only winner this Election Day will be ‘the status quo’
Posted: at 6:43 pm
Former Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul (Texas) said Tuesday he was still not endorsing either presidential candidate because he believed both represented a continuance of the status quo.
"I don't think there's enough difference between the two candidates, and I assume the victor today will be the status quo," Paul told CNN. "We're going to continue with basically the same policies that we've had for a long time, so I don't see the election, as the way it's turning out, to be very crucial at all."
In a June appearance on Fox News, the younger Paul said that while his "first choice had always been my father," he was now supporting the Republican nominee.
"Now that the nominating process is over, tonight, I am happy to announce I am supporting Gov. Romney," Paul said.
Tuesday marks the first time in decades that Ron Paul will not appear on the ballot in his home state of Texas. The 77-year-old congressman plans to retire at the end of his term this year.

A certain line of thinking is all too prevalent among liberty-minded Americans. It runs as follows: "Candidate X may not be perfect, but he is better on domestic economic policy than candidate Y, and that is obviously what matters most for liberty." This way of thinking underlies "libertarian" endorsements of candidates such as Mitt Romney, and it implicitly throws the entire antiwar aspect of libertarianism under the bus.
This is in stark contrast to Ron Paul's way of thinking. Ron Paul may be in the Republican Party. But this by no means indicates that Paul himself would consider your average Republican to be better than your average Democrat in office. In fact, it is probably more likely that the prospect of the warmongering, imperialist neocons returning to full power is more frightening to Dr. Paul than the prospect of a Democratic domestic policy double-down.
Ron Paul, unlike some of his fans, never gave foreign policy a back seat to domestic economic policy: far from it. In his presidential campaign, he talked even more about ending the US empire than ending the Fed.
Moreover, Ron Paul wisely included foreign policy as an essential plank within his domestic economic policy, pointing out incessantly that the US empire is not only responsible for destruction abroad and insecurity at home, but it is also bankrupting and impoverishing us.
Foreign policy is an economic matter in another way as well. Foreign interventionists are essentially security-production socialists. For far too many conservatives, the same federal government that is too inept and corrupt to run a television station is somehow miraculously competent and virtuous enough to make the whole world a safer place through centrally planned invasions, occupations, sanctions, regime changes, and CIA ops.
Some may concede this point but argue that the danger of a new "New Deal" is more acute than that of a neocon renascence. But that is far from obvious, and is in fact rather dubious. What can be more acutely dangerous than an even more belligerent foreign policy that is more likely to lead to nuclear blowback?
When Murray Rothbard explained why he had rooted for (which is fundamentally different from endorsing) Lyndon Johnson over the allegedly "pro-liberty" candidate Barry Goldwater, he pointed out that Goldwater's advisers were crazy and wanted to "nuke Russia." Rothbard rightly said that problems like price controls "fade away" in significance in the face of prospects of nuclear conflict. There isn't much to price in a nuclear wasteland.
Rothbard, like Ron Paul, placed foreign policy center stage. Just as Ludwig von Mises was the Last Knight of Liberalism, Murray N. Rothbard was the Last Knight of the Old Right. As Mises was a laissez-faire Leonidas surrounded by socialists and money cranks, Rothbard was an antiwar Roland, fighting bravely and almost alone in the rear guard of the Old Right against the Cold Warriors of the New.
Rothbard spent much of the 50s writing an epochal economics treatise that made plain the case for the free market. However, by 1959, he was more concerned with matters of war and peace than with domestic economic policy. In that year, he wrote, "I am getting more and more convinced that the war-peace question is the key to the whole libertarian business," and that, in the face of an American arms budget exceeding $40 billion, "the fact that we might spend a few billion less on public housing or on farm support no longer thrills me."
Neither should the prospect of a "pro-business" candidate tinkering around the edges of the American welfare state (and probably actually expanding it) thrill, or even appease, libertarians in the face of American military spending which, in 2011, exceeded $700 billion.
