Crackdown results in seizure of 15000 tons of illegal foodstuffs – Food Safety News

More than 15,000 tons of food and drink worth $60 million has been seized globally in operations targeting fake and potentially dangerous products.

Operation Opson X involved 72 countries between December 2020 and June 2021. The annual drive is coordinated by Interpol and Europoland featured police, customs, national food regulatory authorities and private sector companies.

In total, 15,451 tons of illegal products were found with an estimated street value of 53.8 million ($63.3 million).Nearly 68,000 checks were carried out by participating countries, resulting in 1,000 criminal cases being opened.

The top seized goods by quantity were alcohol and food supplements, followed by cereals and grain products and fruit and vegetables. Alcoholic drinks were the most commonly counterfeited.

In Operation Opson in 2020, 77 countries took part and about 12,000 tons of illegal items were confiscated. Animal food was the most seized product followed by alcoholic beverages.

Food posing consumer health riskIn the latest Opson, eight people were arrested and seven companies investigated as authorities clamped down on the trade of bivalves, such as mussels and oysters, unfit for human consumption.This involved seizures of 120,000 ($141,000), 25 vehicles and 12 vessels by the Spanish Guardia Civil and Portuguese National Guard (Guarda Nacional Republicana).

Thirty tons of frozen chicken were returned to Poland because of the detection of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus in the area goods came from. In Portugal, 61 tons of organic bananas from Ecuador with traces of pesticides were confiscated and in Rwanda, poorly transported meat and expired butter were seized.

In another case, a criminal network used colorants to change the quality of beverages. This led to 14 arrests and seizures including 47,660 liters of whiskey and 9,550 liters of alcohol for the manufacture of fraudulent products by the Guardia Civil and customs authorities.

Jrgen Stock, Interpol secretary general, said removing the enormous quantity of illegal and often dangerous products from the market is an example of how international police cooperation is making the world safer.

Food crime may not always seem like a top policing priority but operations like Opson X demonstrate the massive profits these products generate, which can then fund other organized crime activities.

Action was supported by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), European Commissions Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

U.S. involved in checking honeyMore than 650 arrest warrants were issued during the operation, which is estimated to have disrupted the work of 42 organized crime groups worldwide.

The U.S. was part of a targeted action on honey that featured 495 checks with 7 percent of products non-compliant and 51,000 kilograms of fraudulently treated honey seized.

Officials in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Portugal, Serbia, Spain, Switzerland and Scotland mainly checked the analytical detection of sugar syrup and corn syrup.

In continued work from the previous Opson operation, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy and Spain looked at horse passports and the sale of illegal horse meat.

Catherine De Bolle, Europols executive director, said counterfeit and substandard food and beverages can be found on the physical market and sold online.

The increased health risk for consumers is proportional to the reduced quality of raw materials used in the food processing system. Europol sees a recent development: low-quality products have infiltrated the food supply chain, an evolution possibly related to the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Enforcement action also found fake test kits for COVID-19, HIV and malaria, bush meat and other products of wildlife crime.

The results mark a decade of Opson operations, with the first in 2011 involving just 10 countries and recovering illicit goods worth 300,000 ($353,000).

3 in 10 Americans increased supplement use during the pandemic, according to a new poll – PhillyVoice.com

Nearly 30% of Americans are taking more supplements today compared to their pre-pandemic habits, according to a new survey by The Harris Poll.

The survey, which was conducted on the behalf of the Samueli Foundation, found that 76% of all Americans are now supplement-takers.

The biggest reasons for the increased supplement use were a desire to improve overall immunity and for protection specifically against COVID-19 despite no studies proving that supplements can protect against the coronavirus. Other common reasons cited were a desire to have more control over personal health, to improve sleep and improve mental health.

"The COVID-19 pandemic is a catalyst for increased supplement use," said Dr. Wayne Jonas, executive director of Integrative Health Programs at the Samueli Foundation.

"Supplements when used under the guidance of health care professionals can be beneficial for one's health. Unfortunately, however, many people are unaware of the risks and safety issues associated with their use."

A concerning finding of the survey was that 52% of Americans taking supplements mistakenly believe that most dietary supplements have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Almost one-third of supplement-takers believe that if a supplement was dangerous, it wouldn't be allowed to be sold to the public. And less than half of those who take supplements consulted with their health care provider first before use.

"Contrary to what many believe, the FDA does not regulate supplements. In fact, many supplements are not identified as dangerous until after people are negatively affected by them," Jonas said. "There are benefits to one's health from supplements, but also risks, so I encourage anyone who is taking a supplement or thinking of taking one to discuss it with your health care provider first."

In general, there is still a lack of consistent data on the safety and effectiveness of different supplements. For example, one recent analysis linked high doses of fish oil supplements to atrial fibrillation, a dangerous heart condition. This contradicts earlier studies showing that the supplement improved cardiovascular health.

Melatonin, which is used as a sleep aid, is another supplement on which little research has been conducted, especially on possible long-term effects. It is also not clear what the safest dosage would be for different age groups or the best time to take it.

Because supplements aren't heavily regulated in the U.S., not all ingredients are required to be listed on the labeling, making it difficult for consumers to identify potentially harmful components. Some studies have also found that dietary supplements can be contaminated with heavy metals, bacteria and fungus.

According to the survey, another concern with their use is the potential interactions between prescription medications and supplements. Forty-six Americans taking prescription medications say they didn't discuss with their doctor what supplements they were taking when given a script for medicine.

It's not that there isn't a desire to have this discussions with their health care provider though, the survey results show. A majority of those polled said they would be comfortable talking to their doctor about their supplement usage.

However 41% of the supplement-takers polled said it just didn't occur to them to start the conversation and 35% said they didn't think their doctor cared about their supplement use.

Another 32% said that they didn't think their health care providers were knowledgeable enough about supplements to advise them. Some supplement-takers are also concerned that their doctor would judge them based on the supplements they are taking.

"As more people begin taking supplements, we need to be sure that they have the information needed to make informed and healthy decisions," Jonas said. "My obligation, as a physician, is to help patients understand which supplements can play a safe and effective part of their overall health and well-being goals. The good news is that patients are willing to discuss this topic, but it is up to providers to ask."

The online survey conducted in June 2021 included responses from more than 2,000 U.S. adults.

Get more sleep. As tempting as it may be, try to avoid midday naps and afternoon coffee. Limit your caffeine intake, and in the evening stick to a bedtime routine that consists of putting your phone away, cooling your room to the ideal temperature and taking a natural sleep aid if needed (like magnesium or melatonin supplements).

Eat nutrient dense foods. Food is fuel for your body, and the types of food you eat have a direct impact on your energy levels. With more than 50,000 dietary supplements on the market, you can just imagine how many of those are marketed as weight-loss products. It's a multi-billion-dollar industry. So, trying to find agreement on what the #1 best dietary supplement for weight loss is a toss-up.

Most weight-loss supplements contain such common ingredients as vitamins, minerals, caffeine, fiber, protein, herbs, and other plant compounds purported to burn fat, boost energy, build muscle, lower blood sugar or simply improve nutrition. Many nutritionists and other weight-loss experts have their favorite ingredients, while others think whole foods are the way to go. So, choosing the one pill, powder, gummy, or drink that may work best for you will require some trial and error. The #1 dietary supplement that works for others may not work for you, which is why it's important to peruse your optionsand talk to your doctorto make a decision that makes sense for your body.

Many nutritionists and weight-loss coaches sell their own formulations of their favorite ingredients or certain manufacturers' products; that alone should make you wary when considering weight-loss supplements recommended by them.

Recent studies have called the efficacy of weight-loss supplements into question, including a large review of 121 placebo-controlled trials of herbal and dietary supplements involving nearly 10,000 adults over 16 years presented recently at The European Congress on Obesity.

"Our rigorous assessment of the best available evidence finds that there is insufficient evidence to recommend these supplements for weight loss," said Erica Bessell, a practicing dietitian, PhD candidate from the University of Sydney in Australia, and lead investigator of the studies, in a statement. "Even though most supplements appear safe for short-term consumption, they are not going to provide weight loss that is clinically meaningful," she said.

A similar study published in the International Journal of Obesity Supplements in 2019 focused on efficacy and possible drug interactions of common ingredients used in dietary supplements. That research determined that the effectiveness of weight-loss dietary supplements "is still inconclusive and the cost of these products can be considerable." Study researchers concluded that "healthy diet and physical activity remain the first-line intervention for weight loss."

Here's what some dietitians and other nutrition coaches we surveyed recommend as the best supplements for weight loss. Then, be sure to read up on our list of 15 Underrated Weight Loss Tips That Actually Work.

The best way to ensure weight loss is getting enough dietary fiber from fruits and vegetables, says Morgyn Clair, RD, a nutritionist for Sprint Kitchen. Problem is, most people don't eat enough fiber-rich plants to get the recommended minimum of 25 to 30 grams of fiber a day, so she recommends supplementing.

"People can easily get this through an over-the-counter supplement like Benefiber," she says.

That product is made from a soluble fiber called Inulin (chicory root fiber). Another popular soluble fiber supplement, Metamucil, uses psyllium fiber. If you don't want to take a fiber supplement, you can boost your fiber intake by adding flax meal to your soups, salads, and smoothies. "It's an excellent source of fiber for those who have low fiber intake and it's tasteless," says Fiorella Di Carlo, RD, CDN, cooking video host of Living in Italian.

While most supplements produce mild results at best, a good multivitamin containing polyphenols that fight free radicals and support a healthy metabolism may help your weight loss efforts, says Lisa Moskovitz, RD, CDN, CEO of NY Nutrition Group, and one of our medical expert board members. She recommends a particular polyphenol multivitamin called Oh Grape by Groove.

"With 500 milligrams of resveratrol, this supplement offers antioxidant properties that fight against free radical damage, supports healthy hormone balanceespecially insulinand decreases inflammation in the body," Moskovitz says.

This supplement also contains 2,000 IU of vitamin D, which studies show can be directly linked to weight and metabolism and magnesium that may support blood sugar stabilization, appetite, and energy.

"Oh Grape also packs in vitamin C, which is not only supportive of the immune system but helps fight against inflammation in the body that along with other factors, can contribute to weight gain over time," she says.

EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) is a powerful catechin (natural flavonoid) found in green tea.

"EGCG supplements can help you burn more calorieseven at rest, and studies show the compound can result in weight loss," says nutrition counselor Lauren Manaker, MS, RDN with Zhou Nutrition.

She points to a study in the Journal of Nutrition that links drinking green tea with enhancing exercise to accelerate belly fat loss in obese adults.

Berberine is a chemical compound found in some plants that has been shown to help regulate blood sugar and blood fats so it is commonly taken for type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol.

"It works in a variety of ways to help with weight lossminimizing absorption of carbs and sugars with food, helping reduce insulin spikes and activating AMP-activated protein kinase to support metabolism, which is why I use it in our Carb & Sugar Blocker supplement," says Stephanie Redmond, PharmD, CDCES, co-founder of DiabetesDoctor.com.

Some people who take berberine complain of stomach upset or constipation, but it's generally well tolerated, says Dr. Redmond, who notes that it can be used in combination with common type 2 diabetes medications such as metformin for added benefits since it works by a different mechanism.

"The best vitamins for increasing metabolism are those that work to help your body create energy from the food and nutrients you take in," says nutritionist Lisa Richards.

She recommends a B-complex supplement (which contains 8 B vitamins) to help your body metabolize stored carbohydrates and fat for fuel, aiding in weight loss and increasing metabolism.

"Magnesium and iron are two minerals used by the body to create energy from food," she says. "Taking these two supplements in the morning will help your body to use nutrients for energy rather than storing them as fat."

If you want to lose weight, "my tip is to get your gut health in order because it is at the core of all bodily functions involved with the process of weight loss;probiotics can help with this," says rheumatologist Anthony S. Padula, MD,at the Northern California Arthritis Center in Walnut Creek, CA.and a "Gut Council" member for JetsonProbiotics. "Your gut bacteria (your microbiome) can affect how you digest food, store fat and chemicals that make you feel full or hungry. Probiotic foods contain live strains of bacteria that increase the population of good bacteria in your digestive system, while prebiotic foods contain types of fiber that act as food for good bacteria. Both sources are designed to increase the number of bacteria in your gut and improve your microbiome."

The gut bacteria play many roles in both weight loss and weight gain, adds Trista Best, RD, MPH, a registered dietitian at Balance Once Supplements. "When gut bacteria is off the short-chain fatty acid production in the gut is amped up which triggers appetite hormone production." Probiotics in supplement form are living bacteria that provide countless health benefits when ingested, including improving appetite regulation, she says.

Inflammatory foods like fried and highly processed foods can trigger inflammation in the body, which can impair the ability of the hormone insulin to work properly. That often leads to insulin resistance, which in turn may cause higher blood sugar and fat accumulation in the liver. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, has been shown to reduce inflammation.

"Turmeric can be an excellent addition to an existing weight-loss regimen due to its anti-inflammatory capabilities," says Best. It can be taken in either capsule or powder form.

Collagen peptides are very small pieces of protein from animal collagen. Studies have shown that this protein supplement can help us feel fuller longer, leading to fewer overall calories consumed throughout the day, says Mackenzie Burgess, RDN, a nutritionist and recipe developer at Cheerful Choices. "As a dietitian, one of my favorites to use is Naked Nutrition Collagen Peptides Protein Powder. I love how it contains only one ingredientbovine hide collagen peptidesand provides 9 grams of protein per scoop." She recommends adding it to coffee, a smoothie or overnight oats to pump up the protein and satiety effect.

Anxiety has been linked to weight gain because the stress hormone cortisol, which is released when you are tense, increases insulin levels, causing a blood sugar drop that triggers cravings for carbs and junk food. The problem with many weight loss supplements is that they are "fat burners and energy supplements, all of which cause a certain level of stress on our bodies and activate cortisol," says Jacyln Bauer, PhD, a clinical psychologist and founder of Virtue Supplements. Because she believes "the real reason someone can't lose weight is stress," Dr. Bauer developed a stress-relieving supplement that combines pharma-GABA, with lavender oil, lemon balm, flaxseed, and theanine, an amino acid with anti-stress effects that is found in green and black tea.

As we suggested earlier, the effectiveness of most weight-loss supplements has not been definitively proven. But that doesn't stop millions of people from buying them to hopefully boost their chances of slimming down. There is, however, one indisputable key to sustainable weight control: learning to eat right.

According to Medical News Today, supplements that help to suppress your appetite still don't teach you how to eat, so it's important to learn the proper healthy eating habitsfor weight loss instead of simply relying on supplements to do it for you.
