Is it safe for my teenager to take supplements as part of a weight training programme? – Irish Examiner

Posted: June 6, 2021 at 7:52 pm

A paediatric dietitian and a sport dietitian say teens taking supplements to bulk up is unwarranted and potentially hazardous.

My 15-year-old son is taking creatine and protein supplements as part of a bulking and shredding weight training programme. How safe is this for adolescents?

Paediatric dietitian Lucy Upton says: This is a dietary practice were seeing increasingly, and studies have shown use of protein shakes or powders in up to 35% of adolescent boys in the US and 25% in Australia with likely similar figures in the UK.

The scientific literature doesnt present robust evidence that these products are safe supplements for children and adolescents. The risk or implications of their use at the moment are relatively unknown. Although there may be scope to consider their use in certain groups of teenagers, there are also no clear guidelines about how they could be used safely in this group, with examples such as safe upper limits or products nutritionally tailored for the unique needs of children and adolescents.

From the perspectives of both a paediatric and a sport dietitian, they wouldnt be recommended for use. Children and young people have unique nutritional requirements compared to adults thus dietary practices such as this, typically followed by adults, cannot simply be applied to children. Children go through rapid periods of growth, and at varying ages have increased needs for certain nutrients. Meeting these needs requires a carefully balanced and varied diet.

Given the vulnerability of children and adolescents to media, or perceived pressures around body image, its important to reflect on why young people are engaging in these dietary practices. Is it solely to influence sports performance, or is body image or disordered eating practices involved?

Periods of excess calorie consumption for bulking followed by calorie restriction, alongside disproportionate consumption of certain nutrients like protein is likely to impact on young peoples dietary balance overall, risking shortfalls in other key nutrients.

The safety and effectiveness of these supplements, particularly when engaging in dietary modifications, arent well studied in children or teens, and wouldnt be recommended. Supplement use and associated dietary practices could pose risk for a childs or teens physical, emotional and mental health.

The use of dietary supplements with the exclusive intention to enhance exercise performance in adolescent athletes is unwarranted and can be hazardous. Professional advice should be sought if the adolescent displays obsessive or irrational body image attitudes. Its important they understand body composition is only one contributor to sports performance. Dietary and training strategies exclusively designed to manipulate physique, independent of performance, should be avoided.

And sports dietitian Kerri Major, whos also a personal trainer and author of The Dietitian Kitchen, adds: Children and teens, even those who are more active, are typically able to meet their daily protein requirements from food with ease. Wed always recommend a food first approach, and its important to remember dietary sources of protein offer additional nutrients that contribute to overall health for children and teens too.

Inappropriate or misjudged use of these supplements theoretically could have implications for mood, growth, hormone and cardiovascular functioning.

Strictureplasty: Purpose, Procedure, Risks, and Recovery – Healthline

Posted: at 7:52 pm

Intestinal strictures are a common complication of Crohns disease. Strictures are a narrowing of a specific section of your intestine that makes it difficult for food to pass through. They may sometimes lead to intestinal blockage.

Strictureplasty is a type of surgery used to correct strictures in your digestive tract. In this article, well take a look at the procedure, risks, and recovery.

Strictureplasty is a surgical treatment for intestinal strictures. It involves widening damaged parts of your intestines. If multiple strictures are present, they can be treated at the same time.

The authors of a 2007 meta-analysis of 3,529 strictureplasties concluded that strictureplasty is a safe and effective treatment for strictures in the lower part of your small intestine, including the ileum and the jejunum. Strictures caused by Crohns disease typically occur here.

Strictureplasty is less effective at treating strictures in the upper part of your small intestine or duodenum, which are more likely to be caused by ulcers.

In a strictureplasty, no parts of your small intestine have to be removed. This helps to avoid a complication called short bowel syndrome, which can limit the absorption of water and nutrients.

A 2013 research review indicated that strictureplasty is a safe and effective alternative to removing parts of the bowel for people at risk of short bowel syndrome.

Strictures are caused by inflammation of your digestive tract. Theyre a common symptom of Crohns disease, but can also be caused by:

Over time, chronic inflammation causes your intestinal walls to thicken into scar tissue, forming a stricture. Strictures are narrower than healthy intestinal tissue. If left untreated, they can block the passage of food matter through your digestive tract.

During a strictureplasty, a surgeon opens your abdomen and makes a series of cuts along the length of the stricture. The damaged tissue is then restructured and resewn to allow for a wider opening.

Prior to the surgery, you might be asked to undergo tests to determine your nutritional health. If you are malnourished, your doctor might prescribe vitamins or supplements to be taken before and after the strictureplasty.

Colorectal surgeons use computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans to identify the size, number, and location of strictures. Before the procedure, your surgeon will explain in detail the technique they will use.

The day before the surgery, you might be asked to take a laxative to empty your bowels. In other cases, an enema is given prior to the surgery to make sure your bowels are clear.

On the day of the surgery, a nurse will check your vital signs and prepare you for the operation.

Strictureplasty is usually done under general anesthetic. You will be unconscious and you shouldnt be able to feel anything. An anesthesiologist will explain the risks and side effects.

The surgeon will make an incision to open your abdomen. The surgical technique used to treat your stricture(s) depends on the length of the stricture.

The most commonly used strictureplasty techniques include:

Sometimes, surgeons use a combination of these techniques. According to a 2012 meta-analysis of 4,538 strictureplasties, both conventional and nonconventional techniques for strictureplasty had similar rates of complications.

After the strictureplasty is finished, the surgeon will close the incision site.

Recovery from strictureplasty generally depends on both your health prior to the surgery and how effective the surgery is.

You can expect to remain in the hospital for around a week following the procedure so that your healthcare professional can monitor your condition. During this time, you will be given medication for pain and any side effects of the anesthetic.

Before you go home, youll receive additional instructions to help with your healing process. For instance, you might be asked to avoid driving or housework. Your doctor may suggest a light diet of low-fiber foods and prescribe medication and supplements to help restore your digestive function.

It may be several months before you fully recover. As you regain your strength, you should notice an improvement in your symptoms.

As with any surgery, strictureplasty comes with a risk of complications. The most common complications include:

According to the 2007 meta-analysis mentioned above, the rate of complications for strictureplasties of the lower small intestine was approximately 13 percent.

Strictureplasty is a surgical procedure used to treat strictures in your gastrointestinal tract.

Strictures occur when the walls of your small intestine become thicker due to chronic inflammation. This causes a narrowing of your small intestine that can obstruct the passage of food through your digestive tract.

Strictureplasty is a preferable option for people who may have had previous bowel resections and are at risk of developing short bowel syndrome.

Talk with your doctor to discuss the risks and benefits of this procedure, and to determine whether strictureplasty might be a good option for you.

Morning Bloating: Causes, Prevention, and More – Healthline

Posted: at 7:51 pm

If you wake up in the morning with a larger or fuller feeling in your stomach (abdomen), you may be experiencing bloating, one of the most common digestive complaints, according to a 2020 research review.

Occasional bloating may leave your stomach feeling larger and uncomfortable. In more severe cases, bloating can be painful and accompanied by more serious symptoms.

The key to avoiding morning bloating is to learn what causes it so you can make changes to your diet and lifestyle. If you continue to have severe bloating, or if you suspect an underlying medical condition, its important to talk with a doctor regarding next steps.

Learn more about some of the more common causes of morning bloating and what you can do to help alleviate it.

Occasional stomach bloating in the morning may be a result of lifestyle choices from the day or night before. These may lead to constipation or gassiness, or even swelling and fluid retention.

Chronic bloating that occurs daily could indicate more than just diet and lifestyle alone. If you wake up with a bloated stomach every morning, you should talk with a doctor. They may rule out some of the possible causes of chronic bloat below are a few to consider.

Certain diseases and issues with the gastrointestinal (GI) system are some possible causes of bloating. These include:

Other medical conditions that may lead to bloating include:

Bloating may also be a side effect from certain medications you take. These may include over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription products, such as:

If your doctor rules out an underlying medical problem as a cause of your bloating, you may be able to help reduce occasional morning bloating with diet and lifestyle changes. Ideally, such changes should be implemented the day or night before so you dont wake up feeling bloated.

Eating too many beans, cruciferous vegetables, and legumes may lead to morning bloating, particularly if you consume these foods the night before. Eating smaller meals throughout the day and avoiding eating before bedtime can also help reduce stomach bloating.

Reducing sodium has also been proven to decrease stomach bloating. A 2019 study found that bloating from a high fiber diet may be reduced by cutting down on high sodium foods.

If you suspect a food intolerance, it can be helpful to keep a food diary to share with your doctor. Dont cut out essential nutrients without discussing it with your doctor first.

In addition to increasing your water intake, drinking certain herbal teas may help alleviate bloating. The following herbs may decrease occasional bloating:

Digestive enzyme supplements may help some people who dont have enough enzymes in their GI tract. These enzymes typically help you break the foods you eat and extract their nutrients. Without them, malnutrition, bloating, and other side effects may occur.

If youre curious about digestive enzymes, talk with a doctor first. They can help you determine whether your bloating and other symptoms may be related to enzyme deficiencies and recommend the right products for you.

Regular exercise may help improve digestion, thereby decreasing the risk for bloating. However, even short bursts of activity throughout the day can help. One small 2021 study found that light walking for 10 to 15 minutes after meals helped decrease chronic bloating in participants.

If you have an underlying medical condition, such as an intestinal disease, diet and lifestyle changes may not be enough to help address chronic bloating. Its important to speak with your doctor for possible treatment modifications and testing.

Its possible to wake up with both a bloated face and stomach. This is most likely attributed to fluid retention. Possible causes for morning face bloating include:

If you have an underlying medical condition, such as Cushings syndrome or hypothyroidism, your treatment may help gradually reduce morning facial bloating.

Occasional face swelling may be prevented with some of the same strategies as those for stomach bloating, including:

If you have chronic morning bloating despite making changes to your lifestyle, talk with a doctor about possible causes. An imaging test, such as an X-ray, may be ordered to take a look at the inside of your stomach. They may also help you rule out food intolerances.

Waking up with an occasional bloated stomach isnt necessarily a cause for concern. Diet and lifestyle modifications may help ease minor bloating problems, including exercise, eating smaller meals, and more.

However, if you wake up with bloating every day despite making changes to your habits, it may be time to talk with a doctor. You should especially make it a point to contact your doctor if you experience other symptoms, such as pain, bleeding, and unusual stool changes.

Emerging brands transform sports nutrition category | 2021-05-11 – Food Business News

Posted: at 5:06 am

KANSAS CITY Product development in the sports nutrition category has featured isolates and additives precisely blended to fuel athletic performance and support muscle recovery. Emerging brands are embracing a back-to-basics approach, tapping into the natural properties of whole-food ingredients such as blackstrap molasses, pink Himalayan salt and tart cherries to deliver desired benefits.

The category is flush with highly processed bars, gels, chews and drink mixes, which can be so tough on your gut, which then leads to performance constraints, said Ryan Naboshek, co-founder and chief executive officer of Crafted Energy, Peoria, Ariz. This drives athletes to look for cleaner, sustainable, tailored and functional nutrition.

Crafted Energy markets a line of nutrition bars formulated for specific activities, including running, rock climbing and cycling. The products contain ingredients such as oats, nuts and seeds for sustained energy and agave and dried fruit for quick energy. Walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and tart cherries help reduce inflammation, and cashews and dates relieve muscle soreness. Cacao and cinnamon are added to increase blood flow. The recipes were engineered by a team of athletes, including a doctor of integrative and holistic medicine.

Its true athletes need sugar; thats why these gels and drink mixes exist, to replenish glycogen stores, Mr. Naboshek said. The question I think people are asking now is, What is the source of that sugar?'

Crafted Energys Runner Bar and Cyclist Bar were formulated for aerobic exercise, with a consistency that digests quickly. The Climber Bar has a coarser texture and was built to deliver slow and steady nutrition, Mr. Naboshek said.

Climbing is an anaerobic sport, he said. Its slower, more intermittent bursts of power, so we wanted to have something thats going to digest slower over time so youre getting the maximum utility out of your bar.

Seventy-nine percent of consumers, exercisers and non-exercisers alike, are interested in food and drink that improves physical performance, energy or stamina, Mr. Naboshek said, citing GlobalData research. Nearly half of sports nutrition consumers try new or different sports or energy foods sometimes or often. For athletes, proper nutrition may provide a competitive edge, he said.

You can train hours a day, but if youre not fueling appropriately, if you dont have the right nutrition dialed in, you can plateau to a certain extent, and people are looking to break that plateau by trying new products, new diets, new things that are going to help them reach that next level in their training, he said.

The born-in-the-lab positioning of Gatorade and similar longstanding brands in the category no longer resonates with todays consumer demand for familiar foods. Recent cookbooks such as No Meat Athlete and Run Fast Eat Slow suggest a nourishing, plant-rich diet is key to achieving performance gains.

You can accomplish everything you want as an athlete by eating real whole foods, said Ian Muir McNally, founder and CEO of Muir Energy, San Diego. Youll feel better. Your body will recognize those ingredients and metabolize them more efficiently.

An ultra-endurance hiker, Mr. McNally chomped on raw nuts, dried fruits and vegetables, and vacuum-packed salmon to sustain his energy during protracted treks through Sierra Nevada.

I wasnt using any synthetic additives for my fueling and found that really kept my stomach happy as I was moving along, he said. But what happened was my jaw got tired of chewing nuts and fruits, and my mouth would get really dry.

Mr. McNally searched for a convenient, easy-to-consume option a portable puree with no synthetic additives, preservatives and stabilizers.

Nobody was making this, so I decided to make it myself, he said. I iterated in my own kitchen for half a year, and the first batches tasted horrible, and then they started tasting better. I was trying them out on trail runs, hikes, swimming, and eventually my friends caught on to what I was doing and were asking to try it.

The company identifies the sports nutrition industry, a roughly $15.6 billion market, as outdated, hypermasculine, unsustainable, unpalatable and unhealthy. Many products are what Mr. McNally dubbed high-glycemic hummingbird food. Muir Energy aims to deliver performance products that are nourishing, inclusive and produced in an environmentally conscious way.

The brands gels are formulated with blackstrap molasses, raw coconut palm nectar and pink Himalayan salt. Slow-burning varieties also contain raw nut or seed butters, which metabolize slowly and fuel sustained activity. Fast-burning gels contain dehydrated fruits and vegetables, which deliver a quick shot of energy.

I wanted to have products that were sweet or tart and other flavors that are savory, Mr. McNally said. We want to expand our product line, and we realize there are a lot of people out there who have adventuresome palates and dont want to have the same flavor profile on their tongues all the time. One of our seasonal ones is sweet potato oregano, which is moving very far away from the standard another peanut butter chocolate bar or Key lime pie thing.

This summer, Muir Energy will add hydration mixes. The company also is on track to achieve carbon neutrality this year.

We hope what we do and how we do it becomes inspiration for other brands, Mr. McNally said. We dont want to steal market share; we want to invite people to follow us and expand the pie.

Prior to launching Naked Nutrition, Stephen Zieminski perceived most commercially available powders and supplements as highly processed and lacking transparency. A former college track athlete with a newfound love of weightlifting, Mr. Zieminski struggled to find nutrition solutions that met his standards for quality. He created a brand that strips away unnecessary sweeteners, flavors, fillers and marketing gimmicks, which he believes are widespread in the category.

Miami-based Naked Nutrition offers powders and supplements that are free from additives and artificial ingredients. Products include Naked Pea Protein, Naked Whey and Naked Collagen, all packaged in clear tubs. The core line of products contains single ingredients sustainably sourced. Naked Goat features goat whey protein sourced from pasture-raised goats on Wisconsin dairies.

People are looking for cleaner sources of nutrition, whether its from the grocery store or in a protein supplement, he said.

At the onset of the pandemic, Naked Nutrition saw a substantial sales increase among consumers concerned about muscle maintenance as gyms closed across the country, even as the coronavirus crisis delivered a setback in the cancellation of sports and fitness events, the brands biggest sampling and marketing opportunities.

Once those things ramp back up we are going to have a much more aggressive sampling program to have people try the product for free and become aware of the Naked brand, Mr. Zieminski said. Our protein products, for example, getting those in gyms or Crossfit boxes and Crossfit competitions, and we have other products focused more around hydration, and those make sense for triathlons, cycling, swimming and running events.

Over the past few years, the brand has added blends and flavored options sweetened with organic coconut sugar. The recently introduced Naked Greens combines six organic vegetables and grasses, plus prebiotics, probiotics and adaptogens. The company is set to launch a slate of new products this year, including a seed-based protein powder and a fiber supplement.

Ideally were looking to be in peoples lives from the point they wake up to the point they go to bed, he said. Thats kind of the long-term vision for Naked, to have a product anyone can have at any point during the day. We have protein bars and cookies in development, as well, and were trying to become much more than a powder and supplement company.

Westchester’s Supplement Superhero – The Hudson Indy Westchester’s Rivertowns News – – The Hudson Independent

By Sue Treiman

On a quiet block in Scarsdale, a physician-turned-consumer-superhero has spent two decades helping keep the $36 billion U.S. supplement industry honest. And COVID-19 hasnt slowed him down.

Tod Cooperman, MD, 58, is founder and president of the Westchester-based ConsumerLab.com, LLC (CL), a leading provider of independent testing and information about health and nutrition products. For 21 years, CL has reviewed and rated more than 100 categories of such supplements; over 6,000 products.

Cooperman has also testified before Congress; raised alarms about tainted products; pinpointed manufacturing deficiencies; and become an unofficial consumer watchdog for the 84 percent of Americans who regularly take supplements. This year, some vitamins, herbal remedies, and treatments touted as COVID-19 preventives were added to that list, with reviews available in CLs Coronavirus Information Center.

Behind Coopermans vigorous pursuit of vitamins? Mom.

The guiding question when ConsumerLab began was the same as today; what would I tell my mother if she asked which specific supplements were safe, says Cooperman. Based in White Plains, with an office in Coopermans home, and a Vernon, N.J. laboratory, CL maintains an updated A (acai) to Z (zinc) directory of products sold in vitamin stores, pharmacies, supermarkets, mass merchandisers, discount clubs, catalogs, health care practitioner offices, and other venues. The companys 12 staffers occupy the space between federally-approved pharmaceuticals and largely unregulated over-the-counter remedies. There, Cooperman knows, pretty much anything can and does go.

The most surprising thing has been realizing how often a manufacturer is simply unaware its product has a problem, he says.

Weve seen vitamins that have up to three times the correct amount of an active ingredient and weve seen the opposite, where the ingredient isnt there at all.

He cites a popular cooking oil that contained none of the oil it advertised; a womens multivitamin with high levels of lead; and a leading probiotic that offered only half the listed number of goodbacterial colonies. Then, there was the undigestible vitamin C tablet.

We tried to test it but couldnt break the pill with a hammer or anything else, Cooperman says. It couldnt be metabolized, so it wouldve been completely useless in the body.

CLs online-only findings are supported by 90,000 member-subscribers, 84 per cent of whom are consumers, says Cooperman. The rest are universities, libraries, and other institutions. Members can access daily-updated news, major probes that appear several times a month, 600 answers to supplement-related questions, over 1000 recall notices and warnings, and regular explanatory videos. A twice-weekly newsletter reaches over 200,000 people many, quite vocal.

And we really listen to what they have to say, says Cooperman.

During the pandemic. readers asked about products touted as immunity boosters, including vitamin D, vitamin C, magnesium, zinc, and elderberry. CL also examined COVID-19-related best-sellers, including masks, pulse oximeters (to measure blood oxygen), air purifiers, and hand sanitizers (which can be deadly).

Cooperman twice brought his concerns about dietary supplement quality to Capitol Hill, testifying before the House of Representatives Committee on Government Reform in 2006 and at the Senate Special Committee on Aging in 2010.

Hes served as a columnist, expert, and industry opinion leader, but never seen patients. At Boston University Medical School, he became so fascinated by the biopharmaceutical industry that, by graduation in 1987, his business aspirations had trumped any interest in a clinical practice. Instead, he launched a company to track consumer satisfaction with some aspects of managed care, while seeking the perfect entrepreneurial opportunity.

It arrived in 1994 when the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) allowed manufacturers to make limited claims about their products ability to maintain good health. The law sent vitamin sales soaring but left consumers without reliable information about what they were buying.

The FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) would occasionally come in like a firefighter to douse flames when there was an obvious problem, but they were otherwise hands-off, Cooperman says.

That bothered him.

He sold his company, hired a former FDA tester, established his lab, and launched the first independent, scientifically-based /consumer-focused evaluator of supplements. Where the renowned Yonkers-based Consumer Reports sometimes assessed a single supplement, CL would monitor all products, continually and in depth.

Our goal was to go beyond the best or worst products to drill down to detailed clinical information about whether a product would work or not including safety concerns and drug interactions, says Cooperman.

CL (like Consumer Reports) ensured totally objectivity by refusing advertising, payments, or donations, and by purchasing products for testing itself, from neighborhood stores. Manufacturer samples were not allowed. Subscriptions covered operating costs. (Although CLs voluntary Quality Certification Program assesses products for a fee, permitting those that pass to display a certification badge. Trusted nonprofit U.S. Pharmacopeia or USP also offers certification but reviews fewer products.)

In the years since DSHEA, the FDA has become somewhat tougher on non-prescription drugs, but Cooperman still considers their efforts weak and inconsistent.

Thats not true in the Cooperman home, where his wife and three grown children are routinely drawn into his supplement probes.

My familys acutely aware of the pros and cons of every test. Its common dinner table conversation, he says.

Cooperman regularly takes Vitamin D when sunshine is scare. Hell occasionally add vitamin B12 and protein powder, a necessity for a mostly non-meat-eater. Hes such an ardent fan of dietary fiber (in food) that his college-aged kids call him Fiberman.

Every morning I eat two bowls of hot steel cut oats with kasha, fruit, nuts, and Greek yogurt, he says.

The Fiberman diet helps sustain his energy, but the grateful feedback he gets from subscribers is just as galvanizing.

The thing we most commonly hear is that CL is their go-to source before buying these products, says Cooperman. That makes me and my CL colleagues feel great; motivated, and focused.

And, he adds, its reassuring to moms, too.

7 Foods To Add Vitamins And Zinc To Your Diet Naturally – NDTV Food

Posted: at 5:06 am

As the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic continues to rage, there is once again a renewed focus on immunity boosting foods and supplements. Nutritionists across the world recommend that people should consume a balanced diet inclusive of vitamins, zinc, minerals, proteins, fats and carbohydrates in order to maintain optimal health. Vitamins and Zinc are especially important as they aid the body's immune defence system. Below are some foods that are naturally rich in vitamins and zinc and can easily be incorporated into meals.

1. Oats:

Oats provide many important vitamins and minerals, and they're linked to a reduced risk of heart diseases. A half-cup of oats provides 1.5 mg of zinc and it is loaded with fibre, beta-glucan, vitamin B6 and folates. Oats help to regulate cholesterol levels and promote the growth of good bacteria in the gut. Like legumes, oats (and other whole grains) also contain phytates, which can affect how well the body absorbs minerals.

Oats can be a great way to load up on essential nutrients.

2. Cashews

Cashews are an excellent source of natural plant-based zinc. Whether eaten raw or roasted, they provide about 1.5 mg of zinc. They are rich in vitamin A, vitamin K, copper, folate, and healthy unsaturated fats. Eating cashews can thus reduce the risk of getting heart diseases and promote healthy cholesterol.

3. Citrus Fruits And Berries

It is said that vitamin C helps increase the production of white blood cells, which are keys to fighting off infections. Almost all citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C. Oranges, lemons, pineapples, sweet limes (mausambi), grapefruit etc- you get a lot of options to choose from. The body doesn't produce or store Vitamin C; hence, loading up on vitamin C on a daily basis is of utmost importance. The recommended daily amount of vitamin C for adult women is 75 mg and 90 mg for men.

Citrus fruits and berries are a great source of natural vitamins.

4. Broccoli And Spinach

Broccoli is supercharged with vitamins and minerals. Packed with vitamins A, C, and E, as well as fibre and many other antioxidants, broccoli is one of the healthiest vegetables to put on our plates. On the other hand, spinach is not only rich in vitamin C, but is also packed with numerous antioxidants and beta carotene - both of which increase our immune system's infection-fighting capabilities. Similar to broccoli, spinach is healthiest when cooked as little as possible so that it retains its nutrients

5. Oily Fish like Tuna and Salmon

Fish contains high levels of nutrients and protein, particularly oily fish, such as salmon and tuna. They provide vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins, zinc, and iron and are also rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which help in improving muscle activity, immune function, digestion and fertility.

Fish can be a great way to get your daily dose of nutrients.

6. Yogurt

Yogurt is great for our body's immune defences and gut health. Yogurt gives us good bacteria for a healthy gut and also provides enough zinc for the body. A cup of curd/ yogurt contains 1.5 mg of zinc. It really is one of the best options to aid digestion and to help boost immunity. Yogurt is also a great source of vitamin D and can help strengthen our bones.

7. Ginger

Besides being a good source of vitamin C, ginger also contains beta-carotene. This is converted in the body into vitamin A that helps boost one's immune system. It plays a crucial role in providing decent level of antioxidants to our body. It can be considered as our very own bodyguard, protecting us from oxidation and disease. Ginger also increases one's metabolism and stabilizes the blood sugar level in the body.
