Vegan deficiencies: What are they? How can they be avoided? – Medical News Today

Vegan diets can have many health benefits, but they may not contain all the necessary nutrients. To avoid a deficiency, a person should be sure to consume a variety of nutritious plant-based foods and consider taking supplements.
Unless a person plans their vegan diet very carefully, they may need to take supplementary vitamin B12 and iron. A person may also need supplementary vitamin D, iodine, and omega-3 fatty acids.
Below, we look into why vegan diets may not contain all the necessary nutrients. We also describe the symptoms of specific deficiencies and which plant-based foods and supplements can help.
A well-planned vegan diet is rich in fruits and vegetables and generally low in highly refined foods.
However, any diet that does not contain whole food groups may contribute to a lack of certain nutrients. Animal products can be rich sources of certain nutrients that are more difficult to derive from a plant-based diet.
For example, animal products are the only natural sources of vitamin B12, which helps maintain blood cells and prevent anemia.
Researchers have also found that levels of zinc, protein, selenium, and other nutrients are low in vegan diets.
However, consuming fortified foods and supplements can ensure that a person with a vegan diet is receiving sufficient nutrition.
Below, we describe symptoms of common deficiencies and strategies for tackling them.
Omnivorous diets typically contain enough B12 to meet most peoples needs. As vegan diets do not include animal products, vitamin B12 deficiencies may occur.
A cross-sectional analysis of participants with omnivorous, vegetarian, or vegan diets found that about half of the 232 vegan participants had vitamin B12 deficiencies. Compared with the other groups, the vegan group had the lowest overall levels.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), most teenagers and adults need 2.4 micrograms (mcg) of vitamin B12 per day. This increases to 2.6 mcg or 2.8 mcg for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, respectively.

In addition, a deficiency in vitamin B12 can cause megaloblastic anemia. This involves the bone marrow producing oversized, undeveloped red blood cells, leading to low red blood cell levels.
It can also occur from a deficiency in vitamin B9, also known as folate.
Some vegan foods are fortified with B12, but they may not provide enough. Taking a B12 or B complex supplement can help ensure a sufficient intake of this important nutrient. Anyone concerned about their B12 intake should speak with a healthcare provider.

Omega-3 fatty acids contribute to heart and brain health.
Not getting enough omega-3s can also affect the skin, causing swollen, itchy rashes or scaly, dry patches.
The three main types of omega-3 are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).
The body can convert ALA to DHA and EPA in very small amounts. For this reason, some people mainly focus on consuming ALA. However, the conversion rate is very low: Only 58% of ALA is converted into EPA and a maximum of 5% is converted into DHA.
As a result, it is crucial to consume sources of each omega-3. Plant-based foods that contain ALA include:
Focusing too heavily on ALA is also risky because if a person consumes too much linoleic acid, a type of fat concentrated in foods including canola and soybean oils and nuts and seeds, this further hampers the conversion of ALA to DHA and EPA.
Algae is one vegan source of DHA and EPA. It is currently unclear how much DHA and EPA are necessary for a healthy diet.

The thyroid, a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck, converts iodine into thyroid hormones triiodothyronine and tetraiodothyronine, known respectively as T3 and T4. These hormones help regulate crucial biological functions, such as metabolism.
The body does not produce iodine, so a person needs to get it from their diet. The recommended daily amount for adults is 150 mcg.

Vitamin D helps absorb calcium for healthy bones and protect against chronic bone conditions, such as osteoporosis.
The body makes vitamin D from sun exposure. Few foods naturally contain the vitamin, but manufacturers fortify many products with it, including cereals and milk.
There are two main types of vitamin D: D2 and D3. Vitamin D3 boosts overall levels of the vitamin in the body higher and for longer than vitamin D2.
Animal products are the only natural source of vitamin D3, but vegan supplements are available. They use lichen as a source.
A person with a vegan diet can get D2 from supplements, mushrooms, and fortified foods.
Vitamin D deficiency is very common, and a person should get their levels checked with a blood test. Depending on the results, the doctor may recommend a supplement.

Right now, vitamin D is hot as many doctors, registered dietitians, and other health experts are saying it could lessen the severity of COVID-19 symptoms.
Why? The vitamin is known to help support the immune system by decreasing inflammation in the body caused by the virus. However, Ali Webster, PhD, RD, Director of Research and Nutrition Communications, International Food Information Council, points out that vitamin D may not be the end all be all. "Recent reviews of literature on the topic say that sufficient evidence to support vitamin D supplementation for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19 is still lacking," she says.
Still, taking a vitamin D supplement can't hurt you,that is, unless you overdose. Adult men and women are encouraged to consume 15 micrograms (mcg) or 600 international units (IU) of this vitamin each day, Webster says. For those over 70 years of age, the recommended dietary allowance is 20 mcg or 800 IU.
In some cases, health care providers will prescribe higher doses of the supplement to patients who are deficient or low in this vitamin. However, taking high doses when your levels are fine not only isn't necessary, but it could also be dangerous.
"Before starting a supplementation regimen, it's important to consult with a health care professional and make sure that your vitamin D status is continually monitored to assess any changes that may need to be made after you begin taking the vitamin," she adds.
Below, you'll see five potential side effects of taking too much vitamin D.
Since vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, which just means it's better absorbed and transported in your body if it's consumed with fat. This, in part, makes it possible to consume in toxic amounts. Webster explains that this vitamin increases the uptake of calcium in the bloodstream which can cause a variety of issues. One such issue is nausea or, even vomiting.
If you're starting to feel nauseous while taking supplements, this could be an indication that you're taking too much of the fat-soluble vitamin.
Webster also says you could also be at risk of experiencing dehydration when taking too much vitamin D. Vomiting and dehydration can leave you feeling weak, but taking too much vitamin D can also lead to unexplained exhaustion. You may even experience a loss of appetite, which could also make you feel fatigued.
Another risk factor in taking too much vitamin D is the development of kidney stones. Why? As Webster said, vitamin D increases the uptake of calcium from the gastrointestinal tract, which can then lead to too much of the mineral in the bloodstream. Having too much calcium in your blood can then cause kidney stones to form.

In the worst-case scenario, meaning the most severe instances of vitamin D toxicity, Webster says you could experience heart abnormalities. However, you would have to be taking well over the recommended amountspecifically through supplementationto ever feel this dangerous side effect.
"It's important to note that excessive intakes of vitamin D are primarily the result of misusing dietary supplements," she says. "It's not thought to be possible to get too much vitamin D from sun exposure, and since vitamin D is in relatively few foods, consuming toxic amounts of it would be very unlikely."

Up & Up & Out. Structure/Function Claims Preempted by the FDCA – Ad Law Access

Last week, in a substantial win for the dietary supplement industry, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the Northern District of Californias grant of summary judgment to Target, ruling that state law false advertising challenges to permissible structure/function claims are preempted by the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FDCA).
Plaintiff Todd Greenberg alleged that he bought a bottle of Up & Up Biotin, a private label vitamin sold by Target, as part of his battle with hair loss. Up & Up Biotins label states that biotin helps support healthy hair and skin. The label also states that [t]his statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Greenberg conceded that biotin is a nutrient that supports healthy hair and skin, but nevertheless claimed the label was misleading because most people obtain all the biotin they need from their diet, rendering the vitamin superfluous to all but a tiny percentage of people who have a biotin deficiency.
Under the FDCA, dietary supplement labels are required to be truthful and not misleading. The statute also authorizes certain categories of statements, including structure/function claims, provided they are adequately substantiated. As a general matter, structure/function claims describe the role of a nutrient or dietary ingredient intended to affect the structure or function in humans or that characterizes the documented mechanism by which a nutrient or dietary ingredient acts to maintain such structure or function[.] 21 C.F.R. 101.93(f). Statements suggesting an ingredients ability to strengthen, improve, or protect a structure or function in the human body are structure/function claims so long as they do not suggest disease prevention or treatment. The FDCA was intended to establish a national and uniform labeling standard for dietary supplements, expressly preempting any state law labeling requirement that is not identical to the labeling requirements in the FDCA.
The Ninth Circuit affirmed the District Courts ruling that Up & Up Biotins label satisfied all of the statutory requirements for a structure/function claim under the FDCA, namely that: (1) there was substantiation for the claim, (2) the label included the proper disclosures, and (3) the label did not suggest the product could treat diseases. More specifically, and in contrast to a disease claim, the FDCA only requires substantiation for the ingredients function on the human body, not the health impact of the product as a whole. In other words, manufacturers may make structure/function claims about a nutrients general role on the human body without disclosing whether the product will provide a health benefits to each consumer.
Accordingly, the Court found that the plaintiffs state law false advertising claims essentially s[ought] to impose an additional requirement that dietary supplement labels can make structure/function claims only if consumers are likely to benefit from the product. Because this requirement is not identical to the labeling requirements in the FDCA, the claims were preempted.
Dietary supplement companies are often targeted by class action plaintiffs asserting various theories about how carefully-drafted label claims are nevertheless deceptive to the proverbial reasonable consumer. This decision brings a new level of comfort to the industry that if a structure/function claims complies with the FDCA, it is less likely to be challenged (at least in the Ninth Circuit).

Cannabis-based products have gained increasing recognition in both the medical and wellness sectors in recent years, with the common cannabinoid huge attention among the scientific research community and the general public alike.
CBD, also known by its unabbreviated name Cannabidiol, has become the star ingredient in a baffling range of products in the UK. The retail CBD market has not only grown to include edible products like chocolate, gummies, and drinks, as well as skincare and beauty products but more traditional wellness items such as oil tinctures and capsules.

The success of the CBD industry, both in the UK and in many other countries around the world, has been largely spearheaded by anecdotal evidence in combination with the findings of limited clinical studies. Many users have raved about the products potential to ease anxiety and stress, aid in sleep, and even help with pain and muscle recovery.
While anecdotal evidence is relatively strong in this respect, there are few clinical studies to back up the perceived benefits of CBD. Research into the cannabinoid is on the rise, however, it is important to note that these trials are carried out with carefully controlled cannabis extracts at much higher doses than you would get in high-street products.
While over-the-counter CBD products may well provide individuals with relief from some symptoms such as those previously mentioned, the manufacturers are restricted from making any sort of medical claim. This is because the products have not been subjected to any medical assessment or research. It is also important to remember that CBD affects everyone differently, so while one person may experience impressive relief from CBD products, another might not notice any difference at all!
In contrast to over-the-counter (OTC) CBD products, cannabidiol-based medical products are subjected to a number of manufacturing and licensing standards.
Prior to being approved as a medicine in the EU and UK, pharmaceutical products must pass European Medicines Agency pharmaceutical authorisation. This means that the medicine and pharmaceutical company must be compliant to Good Laboratory Practise, Good Clinical Practise and Good Manufacturing Practise.
In addition, the manufacturers must submit information regarding the product and results of clinical trials for assessment by the European Medicines Agency. These assessments consider the chemical and physical properties of the product, the benefits reported by patient groups and potential risks and side effects associated with the use of the product. Risks and side effects are also continuously monitored following the authorisation of the medicine.
In contrast to pharmaceutical CBD-based products such as Epidyolex, CBD products such as oil tinctures and edibles that are easily available over the counter or on the internet are not subjected to clinical trials or pharmaceutical-grade testing.
Furthermore, while laboratory testing of these products is often available to guarantee the cannabinoid content and ensure that you are getting what you pay for many products available online and in high street shops have been found to be incorrectly labelled in the UK. For example, a study carried out by the Centre for Medicinal Cannabis in June 2019 found that almost half of products tested incorrectly stated the CBD content. One of these products actually contained no cannabidiol at all.
Having said this, it is important to clarify that there is a large number of high-quality, reliable CBD brands currently operating in the UK. Moreover, the incoming Novel Foods deadline for certification in March this year will likely eliminate much of the low-quality brands operating in the sector.
Another of the most significant differences between CBD products bought over the counter and those that are only available through prescription is the strength and recommended dose. A starting dose of Epidyolex, prescribed for the treatment of intractable epilepsy, is 2.5 mg/kg, increasing to 5 mg/kg after one week. For context, each ml of Eidyolex solution contains 100mg of CBD.
In contrast, OTC CBD products often contain much lower levels of cannabidiol that has not been rigorously tested. These products often come with dosing recommendations that dont come close to the doses used for medical purposes.
While a huge number of people may have experienced some positive effects having used OTC CBD products, it is important to remember that they should not be used as an alternative to medicines designed for serious health conditions. Although current research has found that CBD is not harmful at moderate or even high doses, you should not exceed dosage recommendations laid out on each CBD product.

NATO Secretary General discusses security issues with Turkish Foreign Minister – NATO HQ

Today (22 January 2021), NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlt avuolu at NATO Headquarters. They discussed a range of issues, including the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, Afghanistan and Libya.
The Secretary General welcomed the continuation of NATO-brokered talks between Turkey and Greece on a military deconfliction mechanism in the Eastern Mediterranean. The de-confliction mechanism has helped to reduce tensions and create the space for political discussions to resolve the underlying issues. I also welcome the Exploratory Talks taking place in Istanbul next week., the Secretary General said.
On Afghanistan, Mr. Stoltenberg reiterated that, at the next NATO Defence Ministers meeting in February, NATO will need to address the future of its training mission. Whatever path we choose, it is important that we do so together, in a coordinated and deliberate way, he said, adding that NATO supports the Afghan peace talks and, as part of this process, stands ready to further adjust its presence.
Also on the agenda was the planned expansion of NATOs Training Mission in Iraq to help ensure ISIS never returns. On Libya, the Secretary General expressed his concern about the situation and restated the long standing NATO position that the Alliance remains committed to providing advice in the area of defence and security institution building, taking into account political and security conditions.
The Secretary General also thanked Turkey for its significant contributions to NATO operations and for leading NATOs high readiness forces in 2021.
