WISeKey develops WISeToken utility token, a blockchain-based asset for drones and robots to secure IoT interactions (drone-to-drone or people-to-drone), recognize and trust each other

WISeTokens will not be listed on secondary markets, will not be subjected to price fluctuations, and will be sold on a fixed price basis

Geneva January 13, 2020 - WISeKey International Holding Ltd (WISeKey, SIX: WIHN / Nasdaq: WKEY), a leading cybersecurity, AI and IoT company, today announced that it has developed WISeToken utility token, a blockchain-based asset to be used by drones and robots to secure IoT interactions (drone-to-drone or people-to-drone) and to recognize and trust each other. The WISeKey Validation Service (the certificates validation authority), using the WISeKey Public Key Infrastructure, analyses WISeToken digital certificates to recognize and trust the identity of the drone and other parties these drones interact with, and mitigate malicious actors and hackers from compromising interactions.

According to the FAA, commercial and recreational drone market continues to increase. The number of commercial drones in use in the U.S. is expected to reach 835,000 aircraft in use by 2023. Commercial drones, which are used for research, pilot training, filming, building inspection and a slew of other professional activities, are typically more expensive and robust than the model aircraft used by hobbyists. The number of recreational drones in use across the U.S. is expected to reach 1.4 million by 2023.

WISeKey offers a service to authenticate and validate each drone to allow the exchange of information or value with each other. This Tokenization capability is a way to answer the regulatory FAAs Remote ID requirement that will require every drone sold in the U.S. that weighs more than 0.55 pounds to be equipped with secured and trusted capabilities to broadcasts its location and identification to local authorities. One way to think of the technology is as a digital license plate for drones.

WISeTokens are sold directly by WISeKey as a utility token and generates revenue as a hybrid product/service offering. WISeTokens will not be listed on secondary markets, will not be subjected to price fluctuations, and will be sold on a fixed price basis.

The WISeKey Validation Service offer objects the ability to send the validation authority the third partys Public Key and the Digital Certificate for validation. WISeKey checks that the corresponding Public Key holds a valid WISeToken and if so, the identity is verified. In order to get the verification, the object making the request needs to hold at least 1 WISeToken in its wallet, which is valid for 12 months or 100 requests. WISeKey can, over time, adjust the number of utility tokens required to get verified, the longevity of the token and entitled verifications per token.

The WISeKey Validation Service is used for the verification of the validity of digital identity of the drone in real time, thus ensuring secure use of digital identities for authentication of any drone connected to the internet and the activation of attributes such as digital signing, transactions, or sending data.

The WISeKey Validation Service is suitable for all e-services that can be used with a WISeToken. Each validation will be charged with a WISeToken that will represent a fraction of the transaction validation fee equivalent to 0.001 cents of dollar.

The WISeKey platform is Blockchain neutral and allows Blockchain configurations to benefit greatly by the use of secure private keys instead of public keys currently used. Private keys secure data and transactions which can be only conducted between authenticated parties thus making it a very viable option for any sort of IoT transaction imaginable. Drones equipped with WISeKeys Secure Element, called VaultIC184, consists of a tamper resistant silicon chip, based on a state-of-the-art secure microcontroller chip which can be easily integrated to the device by its manufacturers.

Get at least eight hours of beauty sleep, nine if youre ugly," jokes Betty White.

Ive never been particularly aware of my age," says actress Angela Lansbury, age 95. "It's like being on a bicycle I just put my foot down and keep going. (Photo by Richard Shotwell, Invision/AP)

I actually look for things to smile about," says Dr. Ruth Westheimer. (Photo by Dia Dipasupil/Getty Images)

Iris Apfel, age 99, is a businesswoman, interior designer, model and considered the worlds oldest fashion icon. (Magnolia Pictures)

In 2017, HBO presented a documentary entitled If Youre Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast that confronted stereotypes about life after age 90. In the film, Carl Reiner has a conversation with several of his friends from show business, challenging what it means to really live in your 90s.

Reiner, the legendary comedian, director and screenwriter, offers himself as Exhibit A at age 95. (Reiner died in June 2020 at age 98.) He spoke with other legendary comedians: Filmmaker and funnyman Mel Brooks, age 90; TV icon Norman Lear, age 95; and beloved performer Dick van Dyke, age 91.

Comedy is part of these mens work. Humor can be used as a teaching tool, although it is unlikely that is the intention of these notables. Yet, here are some messages we can extract from these talented funny men, taken from the HBO documentary, and some wisdom from four dynamic women in their 90s.

Carl Reiner

Carl Reiner celebrates humor.Reiner had a running quip about being in his nineties. Every morning, I pick up my newspaper, get the obituary section and see if Im listed, he said. If Im not, I have my breakfast.

What we know: A sense of humor is related to longevity. Adults with an average sense of humor live longer than those who dont find humor in life, according to researchers. Benefits include decreased blood pressure while laughter boosts the immune system by decreasing the stress hormone cortisol and minimizing inflammation.

Norman Lear

Norman Lear talks about cultureand flexibility.I think the culture stereotypes everything, said Lear. Because Im 93, Im supposed to behave in a certain way. The fact I can touch my toes shouldnt be so amazing to people.

What we know: Society seems to have some unrealistic expectations about ones age and respective appearance, activities and capabilities. Not to be overlooked is Lears ability to touch his toes, demonstrating flexibility typically achieved with physical activity. Such activity improves our ability to perform daily physical activities, improves our range of motion and increases our sense of balance, helping us avoid falling and injuries.

Dick Van Dyke

Dick Van Dyke suggests dance and song. For a long and good life, Van Dyke suggests that you sing, dance and laugh everyday. Without knowing his daily routine, we do know in 2018 Van Dyke played the older cantankerous banker, Mr. Dawes in the movie Mary Poppins Returns. He not only danced and sang but jumped on a desk, did a tap dance number and jumped down with a spring and a bounce. Dancing has been found to have results comparable to formal exercise improving emotional, psychological and physical well-being. And its fun!

Mel Brooks

Mel Brooks promotes outrageous humor.During the HBO show, Brooks stood up and told the crowd, Ladies and gentlemen, the greatest cat sound in the world, as he broke out into the loudest yowl. As the audience howled, he said, What the hell do you want? Youre not paying a penny here.

Reiner refers to him as the funniest human being in the world. Age and outrageous are terms typically not paired together., but there is a book titled, Be an Outrageous Older Woman by Ruth Harriet Jacobs. Sometimes outrage is needed to get attention.

At the time of this HBO program, all four men continued to work at a craft and art they loved. And herein lies a message. Having a sense of purpose is a lifesaver; humor is a healer helping us keep a perspective. And laughing is healthy. So, think about ways to do something you love to do, keep your sense of humor, have a good laugh and even do a little dance while taking a break from the news.

Angela Lansbury

Age doesnt matter according to Angela Lansbury. Lansbury, age 95, has been on stage, television and in films for more than 70 years, never permitting her chronological age to hold her back. She has said, Ive never been particularly aware of my age. Its like being on a bicycle I just put my foot down and keep going.

What we know. During childhood, there are expected age-related milestones in a childs development, such as when the child walks, talks and can read. Thats not the case for older adults. Expectations about how older adults look, behave and think are not based on developmental stages but on social expectations which often is an excuse for ageism. Most older adults keep going regardless of their age.

Betty White

Betty White advocates getting enough sleep. As a 98-year old actress and comedian, White has a television career spanning 80 years and has worked longer in the industry than anyone else. In promoting sleep, she says, Get at least eight hours of beauty sleep, nine if youre ugly.

What we know: Sleep is considered an important part of our routine and is essential for survival as is food and water. Recent research suggests that sleep has a housekeeping role by removing toxins in our brain that accumulate when we are awake. For older adults, less than seven hours of sleep a night generally is considered insufficient.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine refers to a study by UCLA researchers who discovered that just a single night of insufficient sleep can make older adults cells age quicker. For a good read on sleep, see The Sleep Revolution: Transforming Your Life One Night at a Time by Arianna Huffington (Harmony Books, 2017).

Iris Apfel

Iris Apfel believes in authenticity. Apfel, age 99, is a businesswoman, interior designer, model and considered the worlds oldest fashion icon. She describes herself as a geriatric starlet, known for her brightly colored clothing, layered jewelry and oversized glasses. There is even a Barbie doll modeled after her. She says, When you dont dress like everyone else then you dont have to think like everyone else. She adds, I always dressed for myself and dont care what anybody thinks.

What we know:With age we have the opportunity to become more of ourselves and less reliant on fulfilling expectations of others. Authenticity refers to the characteristics, roles or attributes that define who we are, even if they are different from how we may act. With age there is a tendency to see ourselves as more authentic, according to researchers Elizabeth Seto and Rebecca J. Schlegel.

Dr. Ruth

Dr. Ruth views life in a positive way. Ruth Westheimer, age 92, is a sex therapist, author, media personality and talk-show host. She says, I actually look for things to smile about. In a 2019 interview she indicated as a Holocaust survivor, she defused anxiety and shame by focusing on the present and using humor and charm.

What we know: Having a positive attitude not only makes us feel good, it effects our longevity. A study from the Boston University School of Medicine found that after decades of research, those who were more optimistic about life lived longer, often to age 85 and older. Researchers suggest several reasons. More optimistic people may be able to regulate their emotions and behavior more effectively as well as their ability to bounce back from difficult situations. Furthermore, they may have healthier lifestyle habits.

These men and women in their 90s have lived and seen a lot. During the current climate, some of their tips might be useful: Dont let age hold you back, stay positive and authentic and of course, get enough sleep. Above all, stay safe and be well and kind to yourself and others.

Benzinga

I'm a nosy person, so I elbowed my millennial colleague, Jessa, in the next cube over, and asked her, "Pssst... How much do you save for retirement per year?"Instead of ignoring me, she furtively Slacked me all of her financial details (it was like a giant ice cream sundae for a finance nerd): * Jessa, at 28, still owes $15,000 in student loans, and her husband, who is 30, still owes $20,000. * They owe $12,000 on their car loans. * Jessa and her husband have a $200,000 mortgage. * She currently saves $0 toward her retirement plan. (Sorry, but that's not enough, friend.) * She and her husband need help from Facet Wealth -- a virtual full-service financial planning service with dedicated certified financial planners.According to a survey by Bank of America, a surprising 16% of millennials between the ages of 24 and 38 now have at least $100,000 saved for retirement.Whooo hooo! That's cause for celebration. But what about Jessa? What does she need to do to get out of debt and save enough for retirement? Why Millennials Struggle to Save for Retirement Why do millennials like Jessa struggle to save for retirement? 1. Housing costs: The No. 1 response (37%) for millennials is the cost of housing, according to the Retirement Pulse Survey. 2. Supporting family members financially: Millennials often support extended family members with their income. This doesn't even involve the amount you need to save to put kids through college -- remember, financial aid doesn't cover everything. 3. Not enough income: The State of Our Money shares that more than half of millennials (55%) don't have a retirement savings account, such as a 401(k) or IRA. About 46% said unemployment was to blame. 4. Student loan debt: As of September 2017, the average graduate from the class of 2016 owed more than $37,000 in student loan debt, according to Student Loan Hero. "Yep, yep and yep," she said, when I showed her these numbers. "We hit three of these four categories. I just can't afford to put money in my retirement account right now."What My Millennial Colleague Needs to Do -- and Here's What You Can Do, Too! Feel like the percentages stack against you? Here's what to do next.Tip 1: Analyze interest rates. As soon as I said the words "interest rate," Jessa flopped over in her desk chair and pretended to fall asleep.I knew Jessa and her husband refinanced their home this past fall, and I asked her about their interest rates. She was paying only 3% on their home and student loans. I suggested asking Facet Wealth if they should invest in retirement more aggressively than pay down debt on their loans. (It's what I would vote for!) On the flip side, if you have high interest rates on your own student loans, I'd suggest asking Facet Wealth about paying off debt if your loans carry a higher rate than your investments earn before taxes. Tip 2: Consolidate those student loans -- but there's a catch. Consider consolidating student loan payments only if you can lower your payment without stretching out your loan term. In Jessa's case, she could use the extra money to start compounding her retirement savings.Tip 3: Get cracking on that retirement plan. Jessa must save at least 10% of her income. It's the rule of thumb cited by most financial advisors and other money experts. If Jessa doesn't want to struggle to keep her head above water after retirement, she needs to invest 10% of her income each year. And none of this "invest just enough to get the employer match" crap. In most cases, that's not enough retirement savings for most people and it won't scratch the surface toward creating a hefty nest egg. Tip 4: To get really rich, invest at least 15%. If Jessa wants to get really rich as a passive investor, she'll invest at least 15% of her income. She won't get Warren Buffett rich, of course, but if she wants at least $1 million in liquid assets beyond her home value, she'll shoot for saving 15%.That goes for anyone who invests for retirement. Tip 5: Never, ever borrow from your retirement plan. You can lend yourself money from your retirement account, but it's not a good idea. Jessa's retirement plan is off limits, and so is yours. Assume that money is in lockdown. Period. Why? * You lose compounded growth on your earnings. * You repay the loan with after-tax money, which means the interest you pay will get taxed again when you withdraw it at retirement (unless you borrow from a Roth 401(k). * If you leave your job, you'll have to repay the loan, typically within 60 days of leaving. If you can't, you'll owe taxes on the balance and a 10% penalty as well if you're under 55.You don't want to mess with all that.Tip 5: Take time to review what options are best for you. Once you've got retirement savings under control, you may want to take a look at other potential opportunities. Maybe Jessa and her husband want to dive into real estate investing or get cracking on several side hustles. Whatever it is, she needs to make sure it's worth her time and energy and can contribute toward her long-term goals.Tip 6: Do your own research. Jessa is a proud graduate of a liberal arts college, which means she's a lifelong learner. Here's another thing she'll do to maximize her success: She'll read everything she can get her hands on. She'll research funds and options within her 401(k), read investing books, books about real estate, articles about destroying debt and more. She'll absorb blog posts, listen to podcasts and develop her own investing philosophy. She'll be her own advocate when it comes to her own needs, risk tolerance and more, and you can, too.How Much Retirement Money Should You Aim to Save? Jessa is 28, but millennials span a wide range of ages -- from 24 to 38. Check out the rules of thumb for savings at each age.Savings Goal for Your 20s Accumulate 25% of your overall gross pay during your twenties. You might need to lower this amount if you've amassed a giant amount of student loan debt. Savings Goal for Your 30s Have at least one year of salary saved by the time you turn 30. If Jessa makes $100,000, she should have $100,000 saved. Savings Goal for Ages 35 to 40 Those of you on the mid-thirties end of the millennial spectrum should have double your annual salary saved. You should have four times your yearly salary saved if you're 40. Steps to Get There If she's serious about getting out of debt and saving enough for retirement, Jessa must do these three things.Step 1: Get started. This article won't help -- if she (or you) do nothing about it. You must take action if you truly want to save enough and get out of debt. It takes time and discipline and not even very much money per month (depending on your age).Step 2: Invest aggressively, automatically. Two facts: * If you start at 24, you can have $1 million at age 69. All you need to do is save $35 per month -- and get a 10% return on your investments. Save more, and you'll become a millionaire more quickly. * If you start at 40, you can save $1 million by saving $561 per month, assuming a 10% return. I informed Jessa that since she has $0 saved for retirement at this point, she can start saving at least $158.15 per month for 40 years with a 10% return and still be able to become a millionaire.$158.15 -- that's the cost of a pair of new shoes each month, I informed her. Get Facet Wealth on Your Side Nobody ever says, "Be your own doctor." Why would you assume, then, that you should be your own financial advisor (unless you're a financial analyst or advisor)? You need Facet Wealth, which can help you achieve a more prosperous life by helping you work with a dedicated CFP Professional at an affordable price.Jessa informed me that she'd signed up for our company retirement plan and also made a plan for getting out of debt the very next day.I bought her a cupcake and set it on her desk. It was cause for celebration.See more from Benzinga * Click here for options trades from Benzinga * 8 Must-Know Tips for Getting a Background Check on Your Work-from-Home Employee * 2021 Crypto Preview: Here's What's Coming Next(C) 2021 Benzinga.com. Home All Whites matches in June? The outlook for New Zealand’s men’s football teams in 2021 – Stuff.co.nz

Posted: at 4:19 pm

Abigail Dougherty/Stuff

NZ Football chief executive Andrew Pragnell says it wants qualifying for the 2022 Fifa World Cup to begin as soon as possible.

The All Whites could play at home for the first time in almost four years in June, if Oceania qualifying for the 2022 Fifa World Cup is able to get underway and New Zealand Football is successful with its bid to host the initial matches.

Qualifying was originally scheduled to start in September 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on international travel and borders made that impossible, and the latest word from the Oceania Football Confederation was that it would not start before June 2021.

In a statement in November, OFC said it would work with Fifa to agree upon the World Cup qualifying process and will continue to collaborate with its Member Associations to determine the best steps forward.

NZ Football chief executive Andrew Pragnell said the organisation was eager to host matches in June after acknowledging there wasnt likely to be anything for the All Whites before then and hoped qualifying would be able to begin sooner, rather than later.

We're strong advocates that the men's qualification pathway has to get away as soon as possible, within all the health and safety requirements that we have to manage.

OFC are obviously interested in that as well, and we think New Zealand would be a great place to host a tournament to get that pathway underway in 2021.

If we leave that to 2022, it puts enormous challenges on whoever the OFC qualifier is for the intercontinental playoff, so thats a really big focus for us, working with the OFC and our Government to see if we can make that happen.

The All Whites last played at home in November 2017, when they hosted Peru in the first leg of the intercontinental playoff for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and are seeking to qualify for the World Cup for the third time under coach Danny Hay.

STUFF

Phoenix recruit Clayton Lewis hopes to play his way back into the All Whites.

While the format of Oceania qualifying is yet to be finalised, the best team from the region will have to win an intercontinental playoff in June 2022 to secure their place in the 32-team event in Qatar in November and December that year.

The start of qualification for the 2022 World Cup is one of two major international mens football events on the horizon in 2021, Covid-19 permitting.

The other is the Tokyo Olympics, still scheduled to start in July, where the Hay-coached OlyWhites are scheduled to take part in the mens football tournament, which is for teams made up predominantly of under-24 players (those born since January 1, 1997).

2021 will be a quieter year than usual, however, after Fifa announced on Christmas Day [NZ time] that the Under-17 and Under-20 World Cups scheduled to take place in 2021 would be cancelled due to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Participation in those tournaments has often helped young Kiwi footballers secure moves overseas All Whites midfielder Joe Bell signing for Viking in Norway is one recent example and their cancellation in 2021 could hurt some players professional prospects.

All Whites and Wellington Phoenix midfielder Clayton Lewis played at the 2013 Under-17 World Cup and the 2015 and 2017 Under-20 World Cups, and said this week it would be tough for those lads who were wanting to go to those tournaments.

It was a big opportunity for me to be on the world stage and to showcase what Im about.

I was lucky enough to play in two under-20 World Cups and that helped with my move to England [when he signed with Scunthorpe United in 2017].

It will be tough for those boys, but theyve got to look at the bright side and know that there will be opportunities elsewhere, whether it be with the under-23s or just with their clubs.

Everyones looking at New Zealanders nowadays, so theyre going to get opportunities regardless.

The 2021 Women's Six Nations will be delayed - but organisers are aiming for a spring or summer start.

Full details are expected by the end of January, with the men's Six Nations set to start as planned in February.

Ireland, Scotland and Italy's Women's Six Nations fixtures may double as 2021 World Cup qualification matches given none of the three have yet secured a place at the tournament.

The Under-20 Six Nations has also been delayed until later in 2021.

Like the women's tournament, it would normally run at the same time as the men's Six Nations.

The news comes after the Rugby Football Union told BBC Sport last week it had "concerns" about the tournament because of complications around planning. England are the competition's only fully professional side.

Organisers say they are "fiercely committed to the promotion and development of rugby at all levels, particularly the women's game, where we see exciting opportunity for growth".

With the men's Six Nations set to go ahead on its original dates, despite concerns around French participation, it would give the women's tournament an opportunity to step out of the men's shadow.

The World Cup starts in New Zealand on 18 September and there are still three places to be filled, with 12 countries in contention to secure them.

There are six European countries trying to win places, with Spain, Russia and the Netherlands still needing to complete the 2020 Rugby Europe Championship.

The winner of this will join Italy, Ireland and Scotland in a European qualification tournament that was originally scheduled to take place in December 2020, but was postponed amid coronavirus concerns. The winner will get a place at the World Cup in Pool B, while the runner-up will have one last chance to qualify through the repechage.

The winner of the Asia Rugby Women's Championship 2020 will also head to the World Cup and join Pool B. Hong Kong, Japan and Kazakhstan have been given dates in March to play this event in Hong Kong. The runner-up will head to the repechage.

Either Kenya or Colombia will also head into the repechage after a play-off match. Kenya earned their place in this game by coming second in the 2019 Rugby Africa Women's Cup while Colombia were South America champions.

Samoa are to represent Oceania in the repechage.

World Rugby is yet to announce plans for all the unscheduled games, however moving so many predominately amateur teams across international borders will be complex.

It is thought that using world rankings to award the final places will be a back-up plan if all the fixtures cannot be completed.

WABC hold female coaches clinic in the Gold Coast – FIBA

Posted: at 4:19 pm

GOLD COAST (Australia) - The Women in Basketball strategy of FIBA kickstarted basketball activities in Australia with a World Association of Basketball Coaches Clinic (WABC) held in the Gold Coast.

In partnership with FIBA, Basketball Australia, and Gold Coast Basketball, the event initially had over 50 participants registering for the coaching clinic, unfortunately, because of restrictions not everyone was able to attend but it was still able to welcome 36 female coaches.

"We are pleased with the turnout because despite the lockdown in Brisbane and surrounding areas we were still able to get a good number of participants for the clinic," shared FIBA in Oceania Development Manager, Annie La Fleur.

Led by WABC President Patrick Hunt, the clinic featured esteemed coaches, Sandy Brondello, Jackie Brown, and Jan Stirling discussing developing perimeter players, drills for running the game, and teaching post-play respectively.

Brondello is the head coach of the Australia National Women's team while Brown was the 2019 Basketball Queensland Coach of the Year and Stirling is the General Manager of High Performance for Basketball Australia and a FIBA Hall of Fame member.

Brondello commended the program and shared that she is proud to be part of the clinic that promotes and helps develop female basketball coaches.

"I love being a part of a community where women are supporting women to develop and grow as coaches. Much respect to Basketball Australia and FIBA for investment in promoting female-only coaching clinics," she stated.

The clinic also featured players from the Gold Coast Under 18 Girls team which provided practical presentations and situations for the coaches to learn.

"We are lucky to have the U18 Gold Coast girls team participate in the clinic, they are a talented team and to be exposed to the knowledge of the coaches involved will certainly help them in their basketball skill," stated La Fleur.

The WABC clinic was recorded and will be uploaded on the FIBA WABC YouTube channel for free, to provide more online learning for aspiring coaches around the world.

In the closing remarks of Hunt, the Australian hoped that the participants will mentor at least one female coach this year to grow the pool of female coaches which is in line with the Women in Basketball strategy of FIBA.

Australia is only developed nation included on list of 24 global deforestation fronts – NEWS.com.au

Posted: at 4:19 pm

Australia is the only developed nation to be listed as one of 24 global deforestation fronts in a new World Wide Fund for Nature report.

The report looks at 24 places with a significant concentration of deforestation hotspots or where large areas of remaining forests are under threat.

Eastern Australia is among the 24 places analysed across 30 countries. Together they made up 52 per cent of the total deforestation in Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and Oceania between 2004 and 2017.

In eastern Australia, the report said by far the most significant driver of forest loss or degradation was due to cattle ranching, in which trees are cut down to create pasture for cattle.

An important secondary cause was logging, which the report said remains significant in some places in eastern Australia.

Land clearing rates rocketed after the axing of restrictions in Queensland and NSW, WWF-Australia conservation scientist Dr Martin Taylor said.

He said the report placed eastern Australia alongside the most infamous places in the world for forest destruction.

While Queensland did restore some restrictions in 2018, Dr Taylor said eastern Australia remained a deforestation front.

That will not change until we see rates of destruction go down, he said.

Significantly, the impact of the 2019/20 Black Summer bushfires was not included, as the report, Deforestation fronts: Drivers and responses in a changing world, only tracked the destruction between 2004 and 2017.

Forest destruction was already bad enough for the region to be declared a global deforestation front, then the 2019-20 bushfires burned about 12.6 million hectares in eastern Australia, Dr Taylor said.

RELATED: Report highlights Australias poor performance

Eastern Australia was previously included among a list of 11 deforestation fronts identified in WWFs Saving Forests at Risk analysis released in 2015.

This years report estimates an area of forest six times the size of Tasmania more than 43 million hectares was lost among the 24 deforestation fronts over 13 years.

Nine areas were assessed to have undergone high rates of deforestation including several in Latin America, such as the Amazon in Brazil and Bolivia, as well as Madagascar in Africa, and Sumatra and Borneo in Southeast Asia.

Eastern Australia was included among 10 fronts considered to have experienced medium deforestation, among countries in sub-Saharan Africa such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, along with the Amazon in Colombia and Peru, and the lower Mekong in Laos and Myanmar.

Deforestation includes forest that is being permanently converted to other land uses or theres been a significant reduction of permanent tree cover. It is considered one of a number of factors that contribute to global warming.

Last year the 2020 Climate Transparency Report highlighted Australia as being one of the worst performers when it comes to emissions reduction in deforestation, transport and energy efficient buildings, when compared to other G20 countries.

Dr Taylor said his Pervasive Inaction report found almost 250,000 hectares of threatened species habitat were destroyed between 2016 and 2018 in Queensland, with no evidence of any referral and approval under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

Dr Taylor also suggests that claims forest area had expanded in Australia were misleading.

Such claims are based on classifying young regrowth, often only knee-high, from previous clearing, as forest, he said.

Knee-high saplings are not a forest and do not balance out the ongoing destruction of older forests decades or centuries old.

Dr Taylor said eastern Australias forests, renowned for their biodiversity, and unique species like the koala, were under enormous pressure.

To stop extinction Australia needs to step up our efforts to protect critical forest habitats for Australian wildlife, particularly unburned low fire-risk refuges, and let those that have been cleared regenerate, he said.

WWF wants this to be the last time Australia winds up on this infamous list of deforestation fronts, he said.

That will not happen until state safeguards axed in the past decade are restored and until the national environment law starts to be fully enforced.

He said WWF-Australia had launched Regenerate Australia, the largest wildlife and nature regeneration program in the countrys history, to try and reverse the decline.
