No magazine cover should have 1 woman and 9 men – Pitch

latest-stories
Guest Column: But then again, writes Mithila Saraf, Business Head, Famous Innovations, no industry should have such few women leaders
Advertising is overwhelmingly, unapologetically, unabashedly a boys club. All-male panels, all-male juries, all-male boardrooms werent unheard of until recently when having all-male anything became politically incorrect. You can count the number of women CCOs in our country on one hand (and you wouldnt even need the whole hand). The situation is no less grim at the bottom, take a look at any creative team in any agency. So much so that I have seen even the few creative women who are at the top, often turn themselves into pseudo-guys, laughing, joking and spitting like men (metaphorically, of course) to fit into this gang. Its no surprise then, that when a publication starts hunting for the people behind some of the years best work, they run into a wall full of men.
So yes, lets get mad at IMPACT, but lets also realize that this cover is a symptom of the issue and not the issue itself. The covers will change when our creative leadership and creative teams change. Otherwise, wed only be fixing advertisings PR problem, not its diversity problem. Otherwise, wed only be signaling to journalists that the next time you have a cover like this, go far and beyond to find women to put on the cover. This will then worsen the oft-repeated narrative, shes only there because shes a woman or shes only there for the diversity count. The point is, they shouldnt have to look far and beyond. And they wont. If all of us decide to look a little harder in our everyday hiring, nurturing and promoting decisions.
The secondary cause for concern here is also whose idea makes it to covers like these. Barring a few, you will mostly see Agency Heads on this cover. Do only Agency Heads at these agencies come up with ideas that make headlines? Do younger people in their teams not come up with good ideas? And if so, what are they doing in that agency? No, its just that it is the senior-most people whose ideas finally go through and see the light of day. Talk to any creative at any network agency and you will hear this story every day. At a time when advertising is already losing its sheen, this tells younger people, youre better off in content or just freelancing. This makes things worse for the representation of women because the number of women at the top is scanty anyway.
So what can be done about all of this? Start by looking around the floor at your team. Go back and review the last few multi-crore films you released. Do you see enough young people and women represented there? Its easy to say, we dont get talent / good ideas from these groups. Its harder to ensure that you sit down with them, help them with their ideas and give them the time they need to do what you could do in a matter of minutes in your sleep. Further, when you are invited to a jury, a panel or a cover, ask what is the ratio of men to women there. And the next time you hear a colleague or a friend undermine the success of a woman (even jokingly), remember that she was 9 times less likely to make it up there.

Hamilton savaged by Spitting Image on his birthday – Grand Prix 247
Posted: at 4:49 pm
Spitting Image, the legendary political satire starring puppets, have savaged recently knighted Sir Lewis Hamilton in a tongue-in-cheek skit released on the occasion of his 36th birthday last week.
In Lewis Hamilton, Crusader For Justice he is depicted driving a car and justifying his stance on the environment, racing in politically incorrect countries and basically taking the mickey of the causes close to his heart, while wickedly suggesting double-standards by the seven-times F1 World Champion.
In an unprecedented year for the planet, Lewis has become a crusader for human rights and injustice around the globe. He instigated taking a knee by F1 drivers during the national anthem before a Grand Prix.
#BlackLivesMatter issues are close to his heart and the Briton galvanised awareness of the movement through his symbolic gestures and high-profile comments.
Mercedes went as far as changing the Silver Arrows livery to black.
The legendary, hold no punches, Spitting Image satire TV series is back since last year after a hiatus stretching from 1996, and are now back exclusively on BritBox. More information here>>>
More than 100 puppets have been crafted for the new series with the original shows co-creator Roger Law back to head the creative team with some of the worlds biggest names in his sights, Sir Lewis has not been spared..

The worlds we build and destroy with words – The Times of Israel
Posted: at 4:49 pm
Words have long been humanitys most useful tool.
Few have described this more eloquently than Rabbi Jonathan Sacks ztl, the former Chief Rabbi of the UK, who passed away last year:
With words God created the universe: And God said, Let there beand there was. Through words He communicated with humankind. In Judaism, language itself is holy God created the natural universe with words.
God, in the narrative of Genesis, could have chosen any medium with which to create the world. He could have used a paintbrush to create life forms, or He could have merely thought the world into existence. Instead, he chose speech. He did this to convey a message that is no less significant today as it was in the days of old. In Sacks words:
We create worlds with words.
To put it in scientific terms: Yuval Noah Harari, the acclaimed Israeli author of the New York Times bestseller Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, argues that the distinguishing characteristic of Homo sapiens is its unique ability to create complex systems of communication. Other species can communicate, but only on a basic level. But the human affinity for creating complex languages has allowed us to communicate beliefs, value systems, and/or myths to others that eventually result in mass cooperation cooperation on a scale that no other species has been able to achieve. Language has allowed humans to develop rich cultures and thriving civilizations. Hararis anthropological message is the same as Rabbi Sacks religious one: worlds emerge from words.
Anything that can be used for good can also be used for bad, and words are no exception. While words can bring rights for minorities, they can also lead to their subjugation at the hands of the majority. While words can bring freedom, they can also bring tyranny. While words can make society progress, they can also make it regress. While words can build worlds, they also have the power to destroy them.
Alternatively, to paraphrase Joe Biden: while words can inspire, they can also incite. Irrespective of ones views of the President-elect, that is an unavoidable truth.
We saw the power of words on display last week at the US Capitol insurrection. Instead of being used to build and inspire, words were used to destroy and incite.
Thousands of people, present because of the disproven falsehoods that were fed to them about the election in an effort to stop the steal, attended a Trump-organized rally in Washington D.C. on the day Congress was to conclusively certify Joe Biden as the winner of the election. But this was no mere demonstration. Trump urged his supporters to fight much harder against bad people; affirmed that his followers can never take back our country with weakness, [that they] have to show strength and [they] have to be strong; and told them that when [they] catch somebody in a fraud, [they] are allowed to go by very different rules. He invited them to march over to the Capitol. If you dont fight like hell, he asserted, youre not going to have a country anymore, also proclaiming, We will never give up. We will never concede.
The speech he delivered was deeply terrifying. Ultimately, whether it was from his speech that day or the lies he had been spewing beforehand, the destruction we saw was brought about as a result of words.
Throughout the past four years, many people have dismissed much of Trumps problematic use of words. Hes Trump, some would say. Hes rough around the edges; hes politically incorrect. Sometimes he phrases things wrongly. He isnt a conventional politician, and thats precisely why people like him. Dont overreact to mere words. But what people, among whom I include myself, didnt fully understand was the full powerof those words. The power they had to foment a political climate of falsehood, conspiracy theories, and extremism. The power they had to bring people to storm the US Capitol with QAnon, neo-Nazi, and white supremacist symbols. The power they had to result in the first siege of the US Capitol since the War of 1812.

Whenever a significant event happens, we should always think about what we can learn from it and how we can apply what we learn to our personal lives. Here is the simple message I think we should internalize after last weeks events: words matter. The way we speak matters. Problematic rhetoric should not be dismissed as just words, or just political incorrectness. There is a direct correlation between dangerous words and violent action. We arent the President, and we dont have such a wide-ranging audience as he does. But words are powerful even coming from regular people, people like you and me. While we dont have presidential powers, we do have another type of power, one constantly used in everyday life. It is a power that can be used for societys betterment if used to bring people together, but one that can also lead to societys destruction if used to tear people apart. Such is the power of words. The choice of how we use this power is solely up to us.
The way we talk indicates who we are. The words we choose demonstrate who we choose to be. Let us all internalize the timeless message that can be learned from last weeks horrific events, that while words can build worlds, they can, if not chosen carefully, be used to destroy them.
Lets use them to build.

Attack on the Capitol and the German far right – Cleveland American
Posted: at 4:49 pm
The violent entry of protesters into the Capitol provoked a wide range of views in Germany. In the context of analyzes, some historical analogies have been used and similar incidents have been mentioned in recent years.
a Radio interviewFor example, the historian Achats von Mller drew parallel attention between the Washington attack and the so-called March on Rome organized in October 1922 by the Italian fascist leader Benito Mussolini.
Many German politicians recalled the events of August 29, 2020 in Berlin. In a demonstration against coronary measures, a group of German ultranationalists tried to force their way into the Bundestag building in Berlin.
The most common of those who tried to enter the building were the so-called Reichsburgers (Reichs citizens). (More details about Reichsberger here.)
Most far-right groups in Germany called the Washington attack a patriotic operation. This is despite the traditional anti-American characteristic of most nationalist organizations created in the post-war period.
In October 2014, this trend became apparent to the founders of the anti-Muslim and racist movement Pekida (abbreviated as European Patriots Against Islamization of the West). The founders initially wanted to call it: Pegota, European Patriots Against Western Americanization (recalls Volker Weiss in 2017: Dictatorial Rebellion. New ownership and the fall of the West.)
Groups and individuals not recommended by Methane openly expressed their sympathy and solidarity with those who entered the Capitol. Their position on the United States changed after Donald Trump became president. The origins of the Q-Anan conspiracy movement and the intensification caused by coronary restrictions have contributed to the strange international repercussions of unity.
The publications of German extremist activists or those close to sophisticated organizations were firmly aligned with the American rebels.
Here are some notable examples from radical, ultra-conservative and German nationalist publications.
The American election is the biggest fraud not only in American history but also in the history of democracies
Stage PI , (Politically incorrect), states that what has happened in the United States since 10.1.2021 is nothing more than an attempt to intimidate, punish, and isolate nearly 80 million Americans. -They voted for Trump. Of course, this election points to an unproven study that is the greatest fraud not only in the history of the United States, but in the history of democracies. (The study was published by a Romanian-language publication of the same name. On January 6, the Romanian extremist publication published an article entitled Patriots Occupy Capital Building! War to Save America.)
Death of the Patriot Ashley BabbittGerman courier(8.1 to 21) says he fell in the struggle for his firm belief that Donald Trump won the presidential election.
The right-wing racist and extremist party Third Way (Der III. Weck) claims that Ashley Babbitts death was a conscious assassination by an African-American police officer.
Editor of the Ultranationalist, Anti-Racist and Anti-Muslim Journal Small shop(7.1 to 2021), Jrgen Elsaser likens the attack to a revolution for the salvation of democracy. In his article, he argues that the established media is a liar and that the action of the rebels is a peaceful and patriotic act. These psychic forces are the result of the infiltration of psychic forces into the conservative and national-patriotic parties, which Elseir argues for in his rhetoric and anti-democratic attitudes (according to activists and activists on the Internet and social media), are now on the verge of establishing a global crown-dictatorship.

Oregon ties record with 54 reported coronavirus deaths – OregonLive
Posted: at 4:45 pm
The Oregon Health Authority on Tuesday reported 1,203 new coronavirus cases and 54 deaths, equaling the highest fatality count announced on a single day since the start of the pandemic.
Thirty-two of those deaths occurred in 2020, state officials said late Tuesday.
December was already Oregons deadliest month of the pandemic, accounting for at least 483 deaths nearly equal to all deaths from March, April, May, June, July and August combined. Decembers tally appears poised to surpass that when officials disclose dates for the newest deaths announced Tuesday.
State officials said it took a while to identify some of the deaths reported Tuesday because of a lengthy confirmation process.
The counting of deaths from death certificates may take time to process because they are determined by physicians and then sent to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for further review before the cause of death is ultimately determined, officials wrote in a news release. Once this information is confirmed, the information is reported back with a final cause of death to states. This lagging indicator is now being captured today.
State officials are not optimistic Oregons death count will improve immediately. Despite vaccination efforts, its still expected to take several months to inoculate the most vulnerable, including those living in congregate care, where more than half of all Oregonians with COVID-19 have died.
Tuesdays death toll equals the 54 previously announced by the Oregon Health Authority on Dec. 15, although one of those deaths was later removed from the states official tally.
Among the latest deaths reported Tuesday were two people in their 30s and two centenarians.
Where the new cases are by county: Baker (8), Benton (16), Clackamas (98), Clatsop (11), Columbia (1), Coos (9), Crook (19), Curry (8), Deschutes (56), Douglas (21), Gilliam (1), Harney (3), Hood River (11), Jackson (61), Jefferson (19), Josephine (39), Klamath (46), Lake (3), Lane (89), Lincoln (6), Linn (24), Malheur (32), Marion (97), Morrow (4), Multnomah (265), Polk (10), Tillamook (2), Umatilla (53), Union (5), Wasco, (10), Washington (155) and Yamhill (21).
Deaths: State officials initially did not disclose detailed information about the 54 deaths, but eventually released that information late Tuesday. Each person had underlying health conditions or state officials were working to determine if the person had underlying medical conditions.

Gorillas at Zoo in San Diego Test Positive for Coronavirus – The New York Times
Posted: at 4:45 pm
Several gorillas at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park have tested positive for the coronavirus, becoming what federal officials said on Monday were the first known apes in the nation to be infected.
Zoo officials said on Monday that they believed the gorillas were infected by an asymptomatic staff member who had been following safety recommendations, including wearing personal protective equipment when near animals.
Veterinarians are closely monitoring the troop, which is made up of eight western lowland gorillas. The infected animals are expected to make a full recovery, officials said.
Aside from some congestion and coughing, the gorillas are doing well, Lisa Peterson, executive director of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, said in a statement.
Three animals are exhibiting symptoms like coughing, officials said. But because gorillas live together in troops, we have to assume, the zoo said, that all members of the family group have been exposed.
The number of western lowland gorillas, which can be found in central Africa, has declined by more than 60 percent over the past two decades, according to the World Wildlife Fund.
Zoo officials learned that at least two gorillas had been infected with the coronavirus after they were observed on Wednesday coughing and showing other mild symptoms, the zoo said in the statement.
On Friday, tests by the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System showed that the coronavirus was present in the troops fecal matter, the zoo said. On Saturday, tests by the National Veterinary Services Laboratories, which provides testing for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, confirmed the troop was infected, the zoo said.
The San Diego Zoo Safari Park has been temporarily closed since Dec. 6 amid the lockdown in California, and the primate habitat where the gorillas are housed poses no public health risk, officials said. Last year, as the pandemic spread across the country, the zoo installed additional protective barriers to ensure that there was more than six feet separating visitors and susceptible species, officials said.
The gorillas in San Diego are among the latest animals to become infected with the coronavirus, which has killed more than 375,000 people in the United States, according to an analysis by The New York Times.
In April, the first case of human-to-cat transmission was detected when a tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York City tested positive for the virus. In August, minks on two farms in Utah tested positive. In December, the countrys first coronavirus infection in a snow leopard was detected at the Louisville Zoo in Kentucky.
The 1,800-acre San Diego Zoo Safari Park and the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research are both in the city of Escondido, Calif., about 30 miles north of the San Diego Zoo. All three are part of the San Diego Zoo Global organization.

More than 30,000 Texans have died from coronavirus; Dallas County posts record 3,549 cases – The Dallas Morning News
Posted: at 4:45 pm
Updated at 4:20 p.m.: Revised to include statewide data.
Dallas County reported a single-day record of 3,549 new coronavirus cases Tuesday, along with 14 additional deaths. Meanwhile, the number of Texans killed by the virus surpassed 30,000, according to state data.
Hospitalizations both in Dallas County and across the state also set new highs, with the latter number topping 14,000 for the first time.
Nine of the latest Dallas County people to die lived in Dallas: a woman in her 40s, three men and two women in their 60s, two men in their 70s and a man in his 80s. The other victims were two Highland Park residents, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 70s; two Mesquite men, in their 50s and 60s; and a DeSoto man in his 50s.
All 14 had underlying health conditions that put them at higher risk for complications from the virus, officials said.
County Judge Clay Jenkins said in a written statement that North Texans are now in the toughest time for COVID spread. He said residents need to help limit the spread to ensure that health care workers are able to administer vaccinations as swiftly as possible.
Activities that seemed safe to you weeks ago are much less safe now, he said. The job of keeping safe and keeping the spread of COVID down falls on all of you.
Dallas Countys previous daily high of new cases, 3,194, was reported Saturday.
Of the new cases reported Tuesday, 2,979 were confirmed and 570 probable. The newly reported cases bring the countys total confirmed cases to 197,359 and probable cases to 25,276. The county has recorded 1,791 total COVID-19 deaths.
The county has said it is counting only positive antigen tests (sometimes called rapid tests) as probable cases; a few antibody and household results were included previously.
While other North Texas counties provide estimates for how many people have recovered from infections, Dallas County officials do not, noting that the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not use that metric.
Health officials use hospitalizations, intensive-care admissions and emergency room visits as key metrics to track the real-time impact of COVID-19 in the county. In the 24-hour period that ended Monday, a record 1,226 COVID-19 patients were in acute care in hospitals in the county. During the same period, 462 ER visits were for symptoms of the disease.
Across the state, 26,052 more cases and 286 COVID-19 deaths were reported Tuesday. Of the added cases, 25,301 were new and 751 were older ones recently reported by labs.
Texas has now reported 1,995,292 total cases and 30,219 fatalities.
Of the new cases, 22,110 were confirmed and 3,191 were probable. The state has reported 1,753,059 confirmed cases and 242,233 probable cases.
There were a record 14,218 COVID-19 patients in Texas hospitals, including 4,158 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. On Monday, 25.7% of patients in the hospital region covering the Dallas-Fort Worth area were COVID-19 patients, according to the state dashboard.
The seven-day average positivity rate statewide for molecular tests, based on the date of test specimen collection, was 18.4% as of Monday. State health officials said using data based on when people were tested provides the most accurate positivity rate.
For antigen tests, the positivity rate for the same period was 12.3%.
Tarrant County reported 1,817 coronavirus cases and 30 new deaths Tuesday.
Nine of the latest victims lived in Fort Worth: two men and a woman in their 60s, two men in their 70s, three men in their 80s and a woman in her 90s. Eight more were from Arlington: a woman in her 60s, a man and two women in their 70s, a man in his 80s and a man and two women in their 90s.
The other victims were four Mansfield women, two in their 60s, one in her 70s and one in her 90s; two North Richland Hills residents, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 90s; an Azle man in his 90s; a Bedford woman in her 90s; a Burleson man in his 70s; a Euless man in his 70s; a Haltom City man in his 70s; a Richland Hills man in his 70s; and a White Settlement man in his 80s.
All but one had underlying high-risk health conditions, health officials said.
The newly reported cases bring the countys total to 180,794: 156,876 confirmed cases and 23,918 probable ones. There had been128,406 recoveries. The death toll stood at 1,762.
According to Tuesdays numbers on the county dashboard, 1,469 people were hospitalized with the virus.
The state added 1,098 coronavirus cases and six new COVID-19 fatalities to Collin Countys totals Tuesday. The county has now posted 58,968 cases and 428 deaths.
No details about the latest victims were available.
Of the new cases, 692 were confirmed and 406 were probable. Collin County has recorded 51,840 confirmed cases and 7,128 probable cases. According to state data, the county has recorded 45,846 recoveries.
The countys coronavirus dashboard provides only total hospitalizations, now at 561.
Denton County reported 579 coronavirus cases of which 542 were active on Tuesday.
No new deaths were reported, leaving the countys toll at 237.
The newly reported cases brought the countys total to 44,158, including 13,495 that are active and 30,426 that are recoveries. They also raised total molecular cases to 35,964 and antigen cases to 8,194.
There were 222 COVID-19 patients in hospitals, the county reported.
The Texas Department of State Health Services has taken over reporting for these other North Texas counties. In some counties, new data may not be reported every day.

Doctor’s Death After Getting the Covid-19 Vaccine Is Investigated – The New York Times
Posted: at 4:45 pm
Ms. Neckelmann said she told her husbands story to make people aware of the vaccines possible side effects, and that it is not good for everyone, and in this case destroyed a beautiful life, a perfect family, and has affected so many people in the community.
Dr. Jerry L. Spivak, an expert on blood disorders at Johns Hopkins University, who was not involved in Dr. Michaels care, said that based on Ms. Neckelmanns description, I think it is a medical certainty that the vaccine was related.
This is going to be very rare, said Dr. Spivak, an emeritus professor of medicine. But he added, It happened and it could happen again.
Even so, he said, it should not stop people from being vaccinated.
The condition Dr. Michael developed, acute immune thrombocytopenia, occurs when the immune system attacks a patients own platelets, or attacks the cells in the bone marrow that makes platelets. Covid itself can cause the condition in some patients.
A long list of medicines, including quinine and certain antibiotics, can also cause the disorder in some people. Dr. Spivak described the reactions as idiosyncratic, meaning they strike certain individuals without rhyme or reason, possibly based on unknown genetic traits, and there is no way to predict if someone is susceptible.
If you vaccinate enough people, things will happen, he said.
Vaccines stimulate the immune system, and in theory could, in rare cases, cause it to mistakenly identify some of a patients own cells as enemy invaders that should be destroyed.
Dr. Spivak said several things made the vaccine the mostly likely suspect in Dr. Michaels case. The disorder came on quickly after the shot, and was so severe that it made his platelet count rocket down a pattern like that in some cases brought on by drugs such as quinine. In addition, Dr. Michael was healthy and young, compared with most people who develop chronic forms of the ailment from other causes. Finally, most patients 70 percent are women. A sudden case in a man, especially a relatively young, healthy one, suggests a recent trigger.

Publix soon to have COVID-19 vaccinations at 105 stores – Tampa Bay Times
Posted: at 4:45 pm
Publix will soon offer COVID-19 vaccinations in 105 stores across 12 counties, more than tripling the size of the program since it launched last week.
The Lakeland chain had announced the number of stores would grow to 49 on Tuesday. On Wednesday, it said that number would soon be 105 with new sites in Collier, Flagler, St. Johns and Volusia counties. The other counties with stores offering vaccination appointments for those 65 and older are: Bay, Escambia, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Walton, Marion, Citrus and Hernando counties.
Publix says it will start accepting appointments at the new stores on Wednesday with inoculations beginning the following day. Appointments must be made online at publix.com/covidvaccine. No stores are offering the vaccine in Pasco, Pinellas or Hillsborough counties so far.
In a press conference Wednesday morning, Gov. Ron DeSantis said the state is targeting specific counties and stores while growing the Publix vaccination program.
There are some counties that have really big health care infrastructures a lot of hospitals, DeSantis said. We looked at counties that may be more medium sized that have a lot of elderly people as a percentage.
On Jan. 5, Publix and the Florida Department of Health announced 15,000 doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine would begin getting distributed at 22 stores in Hernando, Citrus and Marion counties.
For 90 years, Publix has served its customers and communities in times of need, Publix CEO Todd Jones said in a statement. Our ability to provide these vaccinations to Floridas 65-and-older population is a privilege. We are grateful to Governor DeSantis for his willingness to work with us to serve our communities.
DeSantis said the program will continue to grow and included more counties.
Were not stopping here, he said.
Those who are 65 and older can receive the vaccines by appointment only and at no cost. Those with health insurance need to bring their insurance card to their appointment. Those without health insurance should come prepared with their drivers license or Social Security number.
Publix said last week each participating store would get about 120 vaccinations a day while supplies last. The retailers pharmacists began administering vaccinations to customers on Jan. 7.
