CIOs believe that cloud infrastructure and practices will undergo drastic changes in 2021; both permanent and temporary fundamental changes are expected

2020 initiated the deployment of fundamental changes that impacted nearly every quarter in the business world. As the impact continues into 2021, cloud computing will also evolve to harmonize in the new reality.

CIOs say that the recently created remote workforce has had a significant impact on the office environment. Enterprise IT needs to be ready to face the changes as so many employees leave the on-premise workplace.

Work from home practice will further boost the migration away from geographically focused IT services to cloud-driven solutions that can be accessed from any location that has an internet connection. For this measure to be a success, leaders say that devices, networks, and applications will need to be rethought and re-implemented.

It is predicted that even voice services will be shifted to the cloud. Help desk and customer service operations will be required to embrace the change by leveraging CCaaS (Contact Centre-as-a-Service) and UCaaS (Unified Communications-as-a-Service) solutions. This will be in addition to the tech innovations (which will definitely include trackers) to allow managers and supervisors to handle remote employees.

Many organizations are considering implementing SD-WANs (Software Defined Wide Area Networks) compared to the cost per square foot of on-premise office space.

Latency is the main issue for connectivity. It will arise from variations in internet speeds in domestic neighborhoods. Wi-Fi speeds differ depending on the time of day, usage, and location. Bigger organizations have tried to compensate for this issue from their side by implementing business-grade connections to vital resources.

CIOs predicted way back in March 2020 that enterprises with on-premises infrastructure would move a large volume of their services to a cloud platform that is co-location or managed infra. While many organizations had already started the process, however, the pandemic has accelerated the journey considerably.

The sudden acceleration in the shift to cloud platforms also resulted in increased incidents of data breaches. Due to the lockdown, enterprises found it difficult to source the secured devices to be transported to the employees. Increased use of unsecured and personal devices resulted in an easier time for threat actors to exploit the network. John Ayers, Chief Strategy Product Officer at Nuspire, says, Businesses moved to the cloud, courtesy of the COVID-19 pandemic; however, the increasing confidence in public, private and hybrid data cloud paved the way for new hurdles.

Cloud-based security issues owing to misconfigured security measures and lack of monitoring give way for stricter security protocols and security testing capabilities. The accelerated cloud adoption means an increase in trust in infrastructure security.

Protecting cloud-based remote employees in 2021 is expected to take place in two formats dependent on the enterprise size. Organizations that can afford it will likely embrace a zero-trust security model similar to SASE. For organizations that cant afford to will likely adopt pre-existing solutions like DNS security. Employee training will mandatorily play a critical role regardless of the defense mechanism.

More flexibility: Getting up and getting rushed for work is something nobody likes and youll have plenty of memories (especially bad ones) when youre already running late for work and skipping that important breakfast meal to make it to your office just in time. But not anymore! Since the break of the pandemic, many companies have asked their employees not to return to the office and instead work directly from home. Which means that you get to sleep as late as possible and wake up just in time for that morning Zoom call.

Whats more? You have immense flexibility going about doing your daily chores that may not necessarily involve any official duties such as going to the grocers, tending to your kids, baking more frequently and taking unlimited breaks between work. The flexibility that you get while working from home is truly unmatched.

2) No commute: I dont think any employee really likes the entire commuting process. What with the never-ending traffic, the jams, the incessant car honking and the rowdy road users. They always seem to zap the energy out of you even before you happen to make it to work. But say goodbye to these woes, as now you sit comfortably on the couch and make work happen.

It has been reported that an average employee spends at least 52 minutes to and fro in terms of commuting to work. But in all honesty, working from home is a boon especially for mothers who have small kids to take care and can devote more time to bonding with them. The rest of us can use this extra time for more productive work such as learning a new language, setting up a side business or whatever that your heart desires.

3) Boost in productivity: There are people who always say that working from home isnt a good option because that means giving a lot of leeway to your employees who will then squander the office time. But this isnt true. According to studies conducted, employees were found to be 13% more productive working at home than at the office. This isnt just an isolated report and the reason being could be that employees feel far more comfortable in their homely surroundings and therefore able to provide far more output than in the office environs.

Sometimes people get easily distracted in their office cubicles with random colleague making a stop and gossiping about others, while spending unnecessary time at the coffee table drinking that extra cup to stay focused. They spend long hours in the office, struggling to make their managers and superiors satisfied with their work; however that means giving up on their social life outside of work. This isnt a healthy way of living your professional dreams. The pandemic has given all of us a respite and employees can now have a great balance managing both work and their social life. This is important as it leads to less employee turnover, less professional burnouts, a marked decrease in stress, keeps employees happy and thereby promoting a boost in their overall productivity.

5) Better communication: Lets face it work from home is a great option however it isnt going to be a fairytale episode if you dont treat it professionally. Although your office has given you the option to continue working from home, do not take advantage of it by means of dodging phone calls or work related matter. You should invest as much time and effort in building and collaborating team work by means of online available tools and software so that you get the maximum benefit out of working from home. Open communication is crucial at every stage and you must be able to communicate your thoughts and feelings to your colleagues and managers as much as you were able to do it when in office. Keeping the communication channel open means that you are receptive to their feedback and can grow as a person.

It is understandable that for many, working from home wasnt anticipated. It isnt everybodys cup of tea however since the pandemic has now shown hopeful signs of slowing down just yet, the professional show must go on. Working from home is a blessing for many and if managed well, you shouldnt be able to see much difference in the output of your work. In fact, with so much flexibility available, you should take full advantage of it and set high standards for yourself and others.

Organizations are increasingly embracing serverless computing for its convenience and cost-effectiveness. But many IT teams are blindly embracing this innovation in cloud technology without consulting their security peers. As a result, we can expect to see a growing number of cyber-attacks in this space in the new year, with criminals exploiting a lack of adequate protection to target serverless computing environments.

Serverless computing is a relatively new innovation in cloud computing that allows organizations to manage and pay for only the compute resources and storage needed to execute a particular piece of code. Its name is somewhat misleading, though; servers are still involved but their maintenance and provisioning are managed by the provider, freeing up developers to focus entirely on their work.

In addition to database and storage services, many serverless providers offer Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) platforms, such as AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Functions, and Microsoft Azure Functions. Typically metered on an on-demand basis, a FaaS platform allows developers to build applications comprising a number of functions in the respective serverless architecture

The various business benefits of serverless computing means its adoption is growing fast. In 2018, Gartner suggested the number of global enterprises deploying serverless technology would leap from five to twenty percent within two years. And its not hard to see why.

With no architecture to manage, its cheaper and more scalable than the traditional cloud computing model. In addition, FaaS simplifies the development process, while the ability to add and modify code as and when necessary can significantly shorten the time it takes to deploy applications.

Despite its obvious advantages, however, there are a number of concerns over its security.

Serverless architecture is very difficult for organizations to protect. Its distributed nature essentially, the reason for its flexibility and scalability means traditional protective products simply wont work. Applications have moved from being functions sharing the same memory space to being loosely coupled and event-driven. Securing these functions should now be prioritized over securing applications. But, when you consider that organizations can have several hundred accounts across different providers and regions, and that each function is basically a perimeter that needs to be protected, its clear that a new approach is required.

There are visibility issues, too. With developers in the drivers seat when it comes to serverless computing, its possible for applications to be pushed through to production in short time without being noticed by security organizations. This is especially worrying when you consider that, as serverless architecture leaves the application layer unprotected, threats to code such as cross site scripting, SQL injection, and remote command execution remain as much a risk as they ever were. Without visibility by security teams into the production pipeline, applications created in a serverless environment will be especially vulnerable.

The storage and transportation of data in serverless computing can also be problematic, in terms of its security and regulatory compliance. Data held in stateless serverless functions will remain cached rather than stored in memory, so extra caution must be given when moving that data from serverless services to external locations in order to avoid leakages. If, as mentioned, applications are deployed unchecked for flaws and vulnerabilities, their compromise could result in a data breach, along with the disruption and financial and reputational damage that accompanies it.

With developers under increasing pressure to deploy more applications, at an ever-faster rate, its little wonder that serverless computing is quickly becoming the leading infrastructure in the software architecture space. Indeed, the benefits flexibility, scalability, speed, and cost-effectiveness speak for themselves.

But organizations should approach it with eyes open. Code and functions can be vulnerable and open to exploitation, putting the integrity of an organizations applications not to mention its reputation at risk of harm. Serverless architecture is very different to any environment most companies will have experienced before, and should be treated as such with regard to its protection. Its essential that developers understand that security teams need visibility over every function, in every region, and with every provider. Without this, serverless computing will quickly become a playground for cybercriminals.
