Nutraceuticals: From Alternative to Mainstream – ETHealthworld.com

By- Mr. Sanjaya Mariwala

India finds its root of medicinal science in Ayurveda, Charak Samhita, some of the Vedas and Puranas. Its history is far older than the curative medical science. Yet, it is considered to be an alternative medicine and does not receive enough attention, both from consumers as well as the regulators and policymakers. The Covid-19 world has proven the significance of preventive measures, thus the conversations of natural nutrients has taken the centre stage across the globe. India, having an inherent advantage in the space, is poised to benefit. Whether it is for improving overall healthcare quotient or for the business opportunities, it is important for India to ensure that the alternative medicine becomes mainstream.

Research suggests that, globally, the demand for nutra products has increased significantly. The USA consumption is driven by growing health awareness, European demand is influenced by innovation and research and Asian preference is due to the trust in conventional medicines. So how can India efficiently capture growing acceptance of these products and establish prowess?

In India we need a separate regulatory body, independent HSN code structure, specific financial packages and taxbreaks for manufacturing, research and clinical studies are some of the immediate steps required from the regulators to give the industry the required boost and allow it to contribute substantially for the public healthcare.

Develop a model of integrated, end-to-end supply chain capability If we just go by the research numbers quoted above, to meet the demand, the supply chains will have to be strengthened. And for that, entrepreneurs will have to take the drivers seat. Existing players will have to expand via backward or forward integration, outsourcing of manufacturing will be another trend to watch out for, and increasing the raw material output by expanding the crop growing region as well as improving the per acre output will be critical.

Encourage research and grants After all these, lets go back to where we started from. If we want to be Vocal for local and "atmanirbhar", we will have to believe and promote our own heritage. Digging into Ayurveda and understanding the preventive remedies for various health conditions, investing in R&D to grow high-quality natural resources within India, registering more and more patents in the name of Indians, importing species from all over the world and grow them in India, investing in talent and education encouraging them to stay put in home country these should be part of our broader agenda for both the govt and the entrepreneurs.

As per the United Nations (UN), malnutrition is the topmost issue the world is dealing with for the last 5 years along with climatic changes. And if it is so, isnt it a high time we reposition the Nutraceutical industry as mainstream and not be merely an alternative?

The 14 Best Nootropics and Smart Drugs Reviewed

Posted: at 3:56 pm

Adderall is a prescription medication that contains highly stimulating amphetamines.

Its most commonly prescribed to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy, but its increasingly taken by healthy adults to improve attention and focus (64).

Adderall works by increasing the availability of the brain chemicals dopamine and noradrenaline within your prefrontal cortex, an area of your brain that controls working memory, attention and behavior (65).

The amphetamines found in Adderall make people feel more awake, attentive and optimistic. They also reduce appetite (66).

A review of 48 studies found that Adderall significantly improved peoples ability to control their behavior and enhanced short-term memory (67).

Depending on the dose and type of pill prescribed, the effects last up to 12 hours (68).

Its important to note that these drugs are not without side effects.

Adderall is widely abused on college campuses, with some surveys indicating that up to 43% of students use stimulant drugs without a prescription (69).

The side effects of Adderall abuse include anxiety, low sex drive and sweating (70).

Recreational Adderall abuse can also cause more severe side effects, such as heart attack, especially when mixed with alcohol (71, 72, 73).

Evidence that Adderall enhances mental performance is strong, but it should only be taken as prescribed.

Dangers In The Supplement Aisle – Medical Daily

Posted: at 3:56 pm

Many people are drawn in by pills and bottles on the supermarket shelves that promise weight loss, better hair, sharper eyesight or a heightened immune system. They hope that over-the-counter vitamin and mineral supplements will provide an extra health boost.

But that tempting bottle of cognitive supplements might be inaccurately labeled or, even worse, downright dangerous, according to a recent study conducted at several U.S. research centers including Harvard Medical School.

Supplements may contain unlabeled drugs

Of the cognitive enhancement supplements, or nootropics, studied, many either contained drugs not listed on the label, or showed drugs on the label that were not in the pill. In addition, quantities were often wrong; 75% of the listed amounts were inaccurate. Researchers also found high levels of drugs in nootropics that have not been approved for use in people.

In 2019, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) even issued a statement about one of these drugs, phenibut, saying that supplements that contain it could not be called dietary supplements. Manufacturers of the supplements also did not accurately report what was in them to the National Institutes of Healths database.

Its one thing for a physician to decide that a specific dose of a drug will benefit an individual patient. Its entirely another for a healthy person to put an unknown quantity of a drug in their body, said study author Pieter Cohen, MD, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

[T]he risks of drugs always increase with higher doses. The products we examined contained up to four times more drug than the prescription dose and combined different combinations of drugs that have never been tested in humans.

Earlier study showed problems with supplements

In a previous study, Dr. Cohen had found that numerous nootropics were not what they seemed. Eight out of 10 supplements examined contained traces of piracetam, or drugs like it. Piracetam is not approved in the U.S. Dr. Cohen called it the grandfather of nootropics and said it seemed like a good place to start picking apart the world of brain boosters.

Piracetam at usual dosages can cause anxiety, agitation, depression and weight gain, he said, but that is at usual doses. The risks of piracetam in over-the-counter supplements at larger-than-prescription dosages are unknown.

One pharmacological relative of piracetam is available by prescription in the U.S., but Dr. Cohen explained it is not a brain booster but a serious drug to treat seizures and should only be taken if ordered by a doctor.

This is not Dr. Cohens first inquiry into the world of supplements. After he published a study in 2015 about -methylphenylethylamine, a compound similar to amphetamine and found in weight-loss pills, he was sued by the manufacturer for $200 million.

Dr. Cohen won the suit and has remained a vocal skeptic of nootropics, saying in a 2018 article in GQ , If you find a study that says that an ingredient caused neurons to fire on rat brain cells in a petri dish, you can probably get away with saying that it enhances memory or promotes brain health.

The path to debunking supplements

Perhaps he is such a skeptic because he has seen firsthand what can go wrong. I was drawn into this area because of my clinical work.My patients were being harmed by weight-loss pills spiked with drugs, he said. That started him on the path of debunking supplements.

So, where is the regulation? Because nootropics are a form of supplement, under FDA rules, they are not regulated the same way a medicine would be.

Supplements are permitted to be advertised as if they will have health effects, even if no studies exist in humans, Dr. Cohen said, so, consumers would naturally expect them to work. The FDA can step in if a supplement is shown to cause physical illness or death, but that level of regulation could let a lot of things slip through the cracks.

Despite all this, do brain boosters contain drugs that really work?

In a word, no. Unfortunately, theres no supplement I know of that will improve memory or clarity of thought, Dr. Cohen said.

As a physician, his advice to patients looking to sharpen cognition is pretty simple. I recommend to my patients that eating a healthy diet, getting plenty of exercise and sleep, while avoiding excess alcohol are keys to staying as sharp as possible.

The take-home

Dr. Cohen had good and bad news for fans of vitamins and mineral supplements.

I recommend them all the time to my patients who need them. Many of my patients have deficiencies of vitamins and minerals and require supplements for their health. However, if you dont have a deficiency or medical disease, its unlikely you need extra vitamins. He did make an exception for extra folic acid for women who are looking to get pregnant.

So remember, that promising bottle of supplements might not just be inaccurately labeled, it might be downright dangerous.

Cidrani: Croatian Brand Wins Over Scandinavia, Netherlands, USA – Total Croatia News

Posted: at 3:56 pm

As Poslovni Dnevnik/Marta Duic writes on the 4th of October, 2020, Nika Pintar and Bruno Balen, the founders of the Croatian startup Cidrani, presented the Niksen brand to the market - it is an instant cold brew coffee powder, 1.5 espresso. It is a Croatian startup that has a vision to make every food a superfood, and the team currently has five employees and about twenty external associates. Cidrani has been around since last year, and in the middle of the coronavirus crisis, they launched their very first products on the market.

No sugar needed

''Niksen is a wellbeing concept for stress prevention, and we draw inspiration for Niksen from our lifestyle, daily training and learning about the latest trends in the world of functional food, the optimisation of mental performance and longevity. We see the quality of tomorrow's diet as a necessary fuel so that we can start working towards realising our greatest potential right now. That's why we're the first to bring instant cold brew coffee powder to the European market, and what sets Niksen Cold Brew apart from other coffees is that it is soluble in cold water, which makes it easy to use and adapted to today's hectic, urban lifestyle. In addition, research shows that cold brew coffee is easier on the body due to its cold brewing process, which lasts up to 16 hours, as a result, it is even up to 70 percent less acidic and therefore sits better when in the stomach. This is also felt in the taste, which is dominated by caramel and chocolate notes, which don't require the addition of sugar. Cidrani's Niksen Cold Brew has been on the market for less than two months, and we're achieving a monthly growth of about 300 percent. By the end of the year, we expect a presence in more than 200 locations in Croatia, with our primary focus being on market education,'' explained Pintar and Balen.

Along with Cold Brew, Niksen also offers Nut-Hazel organic snacks made of hazelnuts and the first Croatian Nootropics, natural food supplements with complex formulas that are a combination of plant extracts, vitamins and minerals. The raw materials, they say, are chosen according to the criterion of excellence, and Niksen Cold Brew coffee blend is a premium coffee from Colombia and Ethiopia and is bottled in Croatia. It can be bought on theirr web shop and in specialised stores.

''Our goal is to produce 300,000 coffees a year, which we plan to achieve in a year and by launching five new flavour variations that will come to be by the end of the year. We started with the Croatian market, but we've already started expanding to Europe, with a focus on the Netherlands, Sweden and Finland, given that these countries are at the top of the list in terms of annual coffee consumption by population. We've already exported the first lot to the Netherlands and Sweden and started a soft launch on those markets. We're members of the Amsterdam Kitchen Republic Community, thanks to which we have the opportunity to present ourselves to the leading retail and HoReCa chains in the Netherlands, which we're actively working on and we expect the first collaborations by the end of the year. Furthermore, we're part of the Future of Food regional cluster of startups for export to the USA, within which we're preparing for the development of markets outside of Europe in cooperation with mentors from the American functional food industry,'' revealed Cidrani's Pintar and Balen.

They also mentioned a number of advantages for cafes, restaurants and hotels. For example, the shelf life of their cold brew is 18 months, it doesn't require a cold chain during transport or storage, unlike regular cold brew coffee, and it can be added to cocktails, juices and smoothies in an instant. Packaging in disposable bags at the same time saves electricity consumption and facilitates preparation so that it doesn't require a cooker or the extra time and human capital required by room service.

''The plan is to expand the line with functional powders based on plant extracts for strong cognitive performance and inner beauty, thus creating coffee-based beverages that are also dietary supplements. We believe that the cosmetics of the future will be our diet and this is the basis of our philosophy of choosing only high-quality ingredients with a proven beneficial effect on the body. At the 17th Progressive Conference on October the 21st at the Esplanade Hotel in Zagreb, Bruno will present a case study called How to start a successful business in times of global crisis - five principles of creating innovation, where he'll also present the vision of Niksen's development. Although we started with food products, we want to create an optimal and rounded holistic concept that includes nutrition, movement and education that encourage the development of creativity, cognitive performance and neurogenesis,'' concluded Cidrani's Pintar.

RFA Argus, alongside her Wildcat and Merlin helicopters, Royal Marines and US Coast Guard teams, worked with Dutch Navy ship HNLMS Groningen to seize 1.7 tonnes of cocaine and 28kg of amphetamines.

The bust was the second in two days after seizing 264kg of cocaine in a separate operation in the region just 48 hours before.

The Armed Forces are committed to tackling organised crime, both at home and overseas, and work with our allies around the world to help protect our people and interests.

The Royal Navy has once again demonstrated its professionalism and tactical operational capability in an international effort to stop illegal drug-smuggling. It is with thanks to their efforts that 160 million worth of drugs will never reach the streets of the UK.

The first of the two recent busts came when two suspicious vessels were spotted near RFA Argus and patrol ship Groningen. A Wildcat helicopter from 815 Naval Air Squadron was launched with a Royal Marine sniper team from 42 Commando on board. Using advanced sensors and cameras, the helicopter team stopped the suspect vessels before a team made up of Royal Marines from 47 Commando, the US Coast Guard and personnel from HNLMS Groningen boarded the vessels to undertake the search.

Just two days later, RFA Argus was conducting routine training when one of its Merlin helicopters spotted a suspicious craft. The 28,000-tonne vessel changed course to give chase and the Merlin and Wildcat helicopters worked with HNLMS Groningen to allow the US Coast Guard to intercept the craft.

This recent interdiction is yet another example of multi-national co-operation in the Caribbean.

I am proud that the team of RFA Argus, utilising 815 and 845 Naval Air Squadron helicopters, boats crewed by RFA personnel and Royal Marines from 47 Commando, were able to take the lead in an operation alongside our US Coastguard and Dutch Navy colleagues.

The Royal Navy Caribbean task group have now prevented nearly a quarter of a billion pounds worth of drugs reaching the UK after three separate drugs busts also took place last month.

RFA Argus is in the Caribbean as part of a Royal Navy task group with HMS Medway providing support to British Overseas Territories during hurricane season. Both ships also continue to carry out maritime security and counter-narcotics operations in the region. The UK works in partnership with allied nations in the Caribbean as part of the Joint Interagency Task Force South, which detects and monitors activity to support security operations from its base in Florida.
