Why free speech must not be used as an excuse for hatred – Laura Collins, YEP Editor – Yorkshire Evening Post

Posted: June 13, 2020 at 3:18 pm

The city of Leeds, the country and the global population have called for a united front to tackle inequality to ensure everyone is treated the same and offered the same opportunities no matter what the colour of their skin.

Our city is home to more than 170 different ethnic groups with more than 104 languages spoken. It also takes great pride in being named a City of Sanctuary.

And rooted at the heart of this is the endeavour to make Leeds a safe haven for anyone who needs its protection.

Discrimination has been thrust into the spotlight in recent weeks as the city of Leeds, the country and the global population have called for a united front to tackle inequality to ensure everyone is treated the same and offered the same opportunities no matter what the colour of their skin.

As a trusted and respected publisher, the Yorkshire Evening Post is proud to take a stand against racism and discrimination.

And over the last few weeks we have been determined as a title to use our platform and position in the city to call out the scourge of discrimination for what it is.

Thursdays front page featured the story of a Leeds mum who faced abuse after she simply displayed a Black Lives Matters poster in her window. But the incredible response from her local community who rallied around her encapsulates that show of solidarity that is needed right now.

A poignant line read: I have a dream that the nation will be friendly and free, racism will stop and people will be judged for their personality and not their skin colour.

The innocent voice of a child speaks loudly it demonstrates maturity beyond their years.

Our team covered the Black Lives Matter protest, and will continue to do so, and at the start of the week we reported on the mindless vandalism of the Queen Victoria statue in Hyde Park.

And it is our intention to continue to confront the issue of discrimination head on and give it the prominence it deserves on our website and column inches in print.

But we have been appalled to see some of the disgusting racist comments to our coverage on social media platforms they are from a minority but their venomous words reverberate loudly.

Yet again this very title and its reporting team continues to come under attack from trolls on social media channels who are using this as an opportunity to spew racist bile rather than engage meaningfully in the debate to be part of the solution.

And, as the tweets and Facebook posts continue to be shared and reposted, the venom is simply spreading.

The worrying power of social media and its reach simply exacerbates this further.

Our journalists have been forced to delete, hide and rigorously monitor these comments as we continue to shine a spotlight on the movement and facilitate debate over what should be done to tackle the issue of racism in modern day Leeds.

Yet platforms, like Facebook, must also play their part in supporting publishers to deal with the onslaught of offensive comments. We cannot do this on our own.

The level of abuse by a vocal minority would not be tolerated and accepted on our citys streets.

So why should this be any different in the vacuum that is social media?

We dont want to shy away from this we take our responsibility as a trusted local news publisher seriously.

We believe in free speech and we should have the right to protect that.

Free speech is the cornerstone of any democracy.

Freedom of speech, when used in the right way, can be so powerful that it implements change.

Free speech also drives meaningful debate and enables communities to tackle challenges head on.

However, with free speech comes responsibility and as such should not be used as an excuse to incite hatred.

We certainly would not want to see free speech stifled and were not calling for a blanket ban on commenting on stories.

But when freedom of speech is used to freely spew hatred then we know we have a real problem and the vitriol on social media has to end.

Our city is facing two very different challenges: one is Covid-19 and the other is discrimination.

Both of these are destroying lives.

But, in order for Leeds to beat this, we have to be united without using social media to spread the venom further.

Michael Youssef: American dream Even amid the turmoil this immigrant believes. Here’s why – Home – WSFX

Posted: at 3:18 pm

I was born into the ancient Christian community in Egypt during a time of great social change, but I was also an American in my heart long before I ever became a citizen. Why did I and why do countless others around the world dream of coming to America?

I grew up during Egypts Nasser regime, which encouraged an atmosphere of hostility toward Christians. President Gamal Abdel Nasser clamped down on churches and Christian organizations and enacted laws restricting the rights of Christians.

For example, NO new churches could be built without the permission of the head of state. No evangelism or missionary work was permitted outside church walls. Some of these laws are still enforced today.

LEE EDWARDS: GEORGE FLOYD UNREST AND THE 1968 RIOTS WHAT WE CAN LEARN, HOW WE MOVE FORWARD

Nasser increased the number of informants to the point that you never knew who might be a government spy. In businesses, in schools and on the street, everyone was afraid to say anything critical of the government. Even at home, people spoke in whispers fearing an informant might overhear.

As a young man, I went to libraries and checked out books on American freedom and ideals. I was fascinated mesmerized by the freedoms Americans enjoyed. I was especially drawn to ideas such as freedom of speech andreligion. At the same time, I worried that someone at the library might report to the government the kinds of books I was checking out. Yet I couldnt stop reading and dreaming of America.

In 1977, I realized my dream and moved to the United States; in 1984, I achieved my goal of becoming a citizen. When I first arrived here, I was dismayed to see how many Americans had so little regard for their own history and the blessings of freedom they enjoyed. Im afraid this is even more true today.

I knew the difference. I had just left a repressive socialist dictatorship, so I had a perspective on American freedoms many native-born Americans didnt.

People who had lived in America all their lives didnt understand what a privilege it was to live here and to be free to speak their minds, to vote and to openly share their faith. Far too many Americans took freedom for granted. Having grown up underIslamo-socialist totalitarianism, thats something Ill never do.

America attracts immigrants because America offers liberty. I am living proof that the American dream is an achievable one.

Why dont people dream of finding a better life in Venezuela? Or Iran? Or North Korea? Because there is neither freedom nor economic opportunity, the great byproduct of freedom, in those countries.

America attracts immigrants because America offers liberty. I am living proof that the American dream is an achievable one.

One foundational American freedom is the ability to speak the truth without fear of punishment or arrest. At one time, that freedom was a fact of American life, as fixed and unassailable as Mount Rushmore.

Today, that freedom is under assault as never before.

The death of freedom always begins with the abolition of truth and suppression of those that speak it.It is hypocrisy for any person or group todemand their own right to free speech even as they trample on the First Amendment rights of others. Free speech creates a marketplace for ideas, not an excuse to shame or to bully those who think differently than you.

As an Egyptian American, I understand better than most that many people of color in America want to be who they are without wearing it on their sleeve. As I watch the unrest gripping America right now, I remind my church, my congregation, my friends and my family that every person is made in the image of God and that that truth is entirely reconcilable with the American Dream.

All men are created equal by God. Our founding fathers knew this and built a strong, free nation abounding with opportunity for all. I am distressed that some Americans may be treated differently because of skin color, but I am also distressed that some limit their own opportunities by believing the lie that the color of their skin determines their worth.

I take comfort in two things: first, that every human is made in the image of God and second, that I live in this great country which continues to perfect its union. America has never claimed to be perfect, but has a history of working to improve itself, albeit sometimes with much difficulty and through moments of national pain.

I still believe in the American dream, which is as strong today as it has ever been for any American, whatever their race or ethnicity.

Speech comes with responsibility | Opinion | herald-zeitung.com – Herald Zeitung

Amendment 1 to the US Constitution grants all freedom of speech ... and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

However, it fails to define or require responsible speech. The issue of responsible speech is left to individuals to determine.

Satire and humor are often claimed as defenses for irresponsible or offensive speech. But, lets try to put some clarity around what constitutes irresponsible speech. When satire or humor punches up at government or authority it can be a brilliant and apt way of expressing grievances against those in authority when they abuse their power.

However, when satire or humor punches down, it becomes a bullying tactic. So, what results from such punching down, the granting of the right to offend using the defense of freedom of speech?

First, irresponsible speech generates conflict. When one perceives they have been unjustly insulted it often results in those insulted feeling victims of a lack of respect. When someone feels they are not respected, they may seek redress through revenge rather than mere objection. We can see the impact of this often in protests turning violent such as are happening now. Unless you believe conflict is a desirable method to redress grievances, conflict as response to irresponsible speech is unwelcome.

Second, irresponsible speech diverts us from our responsibilities. Increasingly shrill insistence on free-speech rights to indulge in insulting and bullying speech, creates a distraction from our very real and pressing responsibilities. Can we think of any examples of this at present?

Finally, it diminishes our souls and our culture. Free speech absolutisms insistence on the right to offend, to say any moronic, insane, untrue thing creates a culture in which little is dear or sacred, and the distinction of truth from lies becomes so blurred that reality itself becomes an illusion.

None of this is a call for censorship. What I wish is for all, in particular those in positions of authority, to take personal responsibility for moderation and minding our mouths and mouthpieces.

We have a right to expect a responsible use of the right of free speech for us to continue to enjoy that right.

We can expect the big kids, those with power, not to throw their buckets of sand into the eyes of the little guys, then insist it is their right to do so, rather than exercise their responsibility to maintain peace and harmony in the sandbox.

The Tom Cotton Op-Ed and the Tired Old Snowflake Defense – The New Yorker

Posted: at 3:18 pm

An opinion column in the Times, like Tom Cottons last week, can have significant material consequences.Photograph by Julio Cortez / AP / Shutterstock

The September, 2015, issue of The Atlantic included reporting on New Orleans and Havana, essays about Jonathan Franzen and Joan Didion, and an excerpt from Ta-Nehisi Coatess soon-to-be-published book, Between the World and Me, a lyrical indictment of the endurance of American white supremacy (In America, it is traditional to destroy the black bodyit is heritage). At the time, the front-runner in the race for the Republican Presidential nomination, according to nearly every poll, was Donald Trump; yet almost no one was ready to reckon seriously with what a Trump Presidency might look like, and The Atlantic was no exception. The issue did, however, include a piece that warned of a dangerously hawkish turn among a new cohort of conservatives, including the most celebrated freshman Republican senator, a military veteran from Arkansas named Tom Cotton.

But the issues cover story was about none of those things. It was about safe spaces and trigger warnings. The Coddling of the American Mind, by the psychologist Jonathan Haidt and the academic-freedom advocate Greg Lukianoff, argued that a spectre was haunting American universitiesa misbegotten crusade to scrub campuses clean of words, ideas, and subjects that might cause discomfort or give offense. In the articleand, later, in a best-selling book of the same nameHaidt and Lukianoff posited a dichotomy. On one side were the defenders of free speech and open debate, the true heirs to the tradition of John Stuart Mill. On the other were those who, hoping to protect students delicate feelings, preferred policing speech and punishing speakers. The former were clearheaded about the fact that speech is speech and violence is violence. The latter were constantly conflating the two, confusing mere disagreements or jokes with actual threats. Contrary to what you might hear from some campus activists, Haidt and Lukianoff maintained, their safety was not literally at risk, because, in a classroom, a discussion of violence is unlikely to be followed by actual violence.

The Coddling of the American Mind has since been criticizedthe political scientist Jeffrey Adam Sachs, for example, has made a convincing case against several of its findingsbut much of the argument is fine, as far as it goes. And yet this is precisely the question: How far does it go? Haidt and Lukianoff have suggested that campus controversies are more important than they seem, because todays Oberlin sophomore may be tomorrows congressional aide, trained to treat dissenting opinions as affronts to her personal safety. But another potential problem runs in the opposite direction: What if Haidt and Lukianoffs framework is applied too broadly, far beyond the boundaries of the liberal-arts campus? If the free-speech stalwarts worry about the narrowing of debate, then their critics worry about a dogmatic and overzealous kind of broadening. These criticscall them contextualistsare interested not in dismantling the bedrock value of free expression but in weighing it against other values. What if the arbiters of national discourse are so determined to let a thousand flowers bloom, so insistent that the marketplace of ideas can solve any problem, that they will come to see everything, even unvarnished overtures toward fascism, as so much constructive disagreement? Open debate is a wonderful thing, but is it possible to be so predisposed toward openness that you can blind yourself to what is in fact a clear and present danger?

In September, 2015, the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic was James Bennet. The following year, Bennet left The Atlantic to run the editorial section of the Times. His tenure there was contentious from the start. One of Bennets marquee hires was Bret Stephens, an anti-Trump conservative, whose first column for the paper implied that total certainty about the severity of climate change was comparable to thought policing under Stalinism. Some free-speech stalwarts saw this as a delightful provocation, just one more contribution to the marketplace of ideas. The contextualists were less sanguine. Unlike, say, a poetry reading at a campus caf, an opinion column in the Times can have significant material consequences, consequences that are not limited to emotional discomfort. In this case, the material objection was not that Stephens was enraging the sensibilities of liberal snowflakes but that he was giving some amount of intellectual succor to the people and companies engaged in the rapid destruction of the planet, a very real problem that the marketplace of ideas, not to mention the non-metaphorical marketplace, has come nowhere close to solving.

Last week, the Times published an Op-Ed by Tom Cotton, the hawkish senator from Arkansas, called Send in the Troops. In an incendiary tone, Cotton wrote that nihilist criminals are simply out for loot and the thrill of destruction, with cadres of left-wing radicals like antifa infiltrating protest marches to exploit [George] Floyds death for their own anarchic purposes. This claimwhich has been largely discredited, including in the Times own pageswas the basis for Cottons argument that President Trump should invoke the Insurrection Act and use the U.S. military to crush dissidents by force. On Twitter and elsewhere, the free-speech stalwarts treated Cottons column as yet another interesting thought exercise. But the contextualists saw it as a specific and actionable threat. Cotton was not a professor assigning The Bell Jar without a trigger warning. He was imploring a man he knows, a man who happens to control the worlds most powerful military, to physically subdue untold numbers of his own citizens. Nor was this purely hypothetical. Trump has often repeated his admiration for vicious strongmen around the world, his desire for unchecked power, and his belief that street protests should be met with overwhelming force.

There was a national uproar over the column, and a backlash to the backlash. Much of it took a familiar form. The free-speech stalwarts accused the contextualists of being coddled snowflakes who couldnt handle the rough and tumble of debate. But things have gone too far in this country for an old script about campus culture wars to be of much use. Cottons piece was published two days after federal officers used batons and pepper balls to disperse peaceful demonstrators outside the White House, clearing a path for Trump to glower in front of a boarded-up church. In a classroom, a discussion of violence is unlikely to be followed by actual violence. But in a republic on the brink of a legitimacy crisis, a country where the highest office is held by a brute and would-be authoritarian, state violence is not an academic abstraction but a constantly looming menace.

Bennet resigned on Sunday, but his successor will surely face similar dilemmas in the near future. In theory, the Times aims to reflect the breadth of the national discourse. It also aims to remain faithful to its bedrock valuesupholding democracy, decrying racism, and pursuing truth, to name a few. In practice, its not always possible to achieve both goals at once. Its easy for observers to call out the Times, or any paper of record, for this or that misstep; its harder to come up with a consistent set of principles that would determine which opinions are fit to print. The dilemma is especially pronounced in the age of Trump, because Trumps values, to the extent that they exist, are antithetical to many of the Times values. As the Times columnist Michelle Goldberg pointed out, any good newspaper should strive to avoid bigotry or dishonesty, but theres generally no way to defend the administration without being either bigoted or dishonest. Cotton, in his Op-Ed, attempted to justify his argument by citing a recent poll suggesting that most Americans agree with him. Critics later questioned this poll result, or at least contextualized it. Should a national newspaper be willing to publish any opinion that is shared by at least half of the country? If the Times simply aims to be a barometer of popular opinion, then a poll would be sufficient. If the paper wants to be something more, though, then some opinions will have to fall beneath its standards.

He loved to record the deeds – Mumbai Mirror

Posted: at 3:17 pm

Fredun E De Vitre pays tribute to Mumbai's Vasant Raiji, who was the oldest surviving first-class cricketer until he passed away on Saturday aged 100

Vasant Raiji, who passed away at age 100, is remembered by most people for being the oldest surviving first-class cricketer. But there was far more to the man than merely his remarkable longevity. He was a cricketer, a cricket-crazy fan of the game, its historian, a cricketing author of repute, meticulous in research, with an easy, simple style, which somehow communicated to the reader his unbridled passion for the sport.

He loved to record the deeds of lesser-known cricketers like Baloo Palwankar and one of his favourites, LP Jai (who, in his day, is reputed to have been in the Victor Trumper mould as an elegant, free-stroking batsman). He wrote on hitherto little-researched subjects like the Parsee teams visits to England in 1886 and 1888. Raijis classic book, Indias Hambledon Men, published in 1986, revealed to a large readership charming nuggets relating to those tours and set the tone for future histories of the development of the game in India.

The Raiji I would like to remember is the gentleman who held forth sitting at the Cricket Club of India for many years, always soft-spoken but with an obvious passion about the game in his voice that was infectious and started many an interesting conversation, particularly about players and events of the old days. He believed that Indias first Test captain, CK Nayudu, was the greatest cricketer he had seen, though he acknowledged the sterling abilities of the modern greats as well and was never dismissive of their genius, as some others of his vintage were wont to do. He was knowledgeable and discerning and not willing to praise any and every cricketer who may have had a brief moment in the sun. He held strong views on various aspects of the game, but invariably expressed them in a very persuasive, non-hurtful way.

I met him for my book Willow Tales, which focusses on the lighter side of Indian cricket and in the process, I discovered Raijis wry sense of humour. He added four hilarious anecdotes to my collection.

He told of the time at the start of the 1940-41 Ranji season, when the Bombay selection committee was meeting to select the squad. The name of CH Chandrana came up. Vijay Merchant, the captain, was not enthused. Hes 51-years old, he said. How can he possibly be selected? Pat came the reply from LP Jai: Gentlemen, are we match-making or selecting a cricket team?

Raiji also narrated the story of Jimmy Lawyer, who played for the Parsees in the Pentangular. One day, an Englishman in army uniform walked up to the nets at the Brabourne Stadium, and politely asked if he could bowl a few balls. Wanting to humour the Englishman, Lawyer agreed. Much to his consternation, he was beaten ball after ball, he couldnt read the spin at all. At the end, he told the Englishman, Well bowled, young man, you bowl quite well. Thank you, was the reply, Im Hedley Verity. Lawyers jaw dropped. This was the man who dismissed the great Donald Bradman 8 times in 16 Tests!

Raiji spoke with pride about his exchange of letters with the greatest batsman of all time, Bradman, and often wondered, with great modesty and a childlike delight, why the great man had deigned to consider him worthy of being the recipient of more than a handful of letters on cricketing matters.

He was one of the two persons I knew personally who had watched the first-ever Test Match on Indian soil, at the Bombay Gymkhana in December 1933, the other being Dady Patel, the formidable lawyer who strode the corridors of the rent courts in Mumbai like a colossus.

His family firm of Chartered Accountants, NM Raiji & Co took up a great deal of his time too. I believe that Raijis lasting legacy to the game will be his books. His penmanship had few flourishes and no memorably great turn of phrase; he used simple, direct language and he researched long and deep, with an enviable eye for detail. He drew a great deal on the books he had personally collected to make his cricket library and his love for cricket literature no doubt was an asset in bringing his characters alive for readers, particularly to a much younger audience, with books on Ranji, Duleep, LP Jai, CK Nayudu and a host of others.

Although it is now several decades past, I well remember how much I enjoyed reading his book on LP Jai, a cricketer about whom I knew very little until Raiji gave him his deserved place at the top of the hierarchy of Mumbai crickets stylists at the batting crease. Indias Hambledon Men also remains a personal favourite, not just as a reference book but also to be read for the sheer pleasure of revelling in just how adventurous and far-sighted the men from my great community, the Parsees, were way back in the 1880s.

It is an irony of life that an opening batsman who never reached a century on the field of play (his highest score was 68) in fact ended up reaching that great landmark on the field of life. Vasant Raiji RIP.
