Church that defied coronavirus restrictions is burned to the ground – Boston.com

The burning of a church in northern Mississippi this week is being investigated as arson because of a spray-painted message at the scene that seemed to criticize the churchs defiance of coronavirus restrictions.
First Pentecostal Church had sued the city of Holly Springs, which is about an hour southeast of Memphis, Tennessee, arguing that its stay-at-home order had violated the churchs right to free speech and interfered with its members ability to worship.
After firefighters put out the blaze early Wednesday, police found a message, Bet you stay home now you hypokrits, spray-painted on the ground near the churchs doors, according to Maj. Kelly McMillen of the Marshall County Sheriffs Department.
A photograph of the graffiti also appears to show an atomic symbol with an A in the center, which is sometimes used as a logo for atheist groups.
Gov. Tate Reeves of Mississippi said on Twitter that he was heartbroken and furious about the fire.
McMillen said police had found a can of white spray paint and a flashlight at the scene. He said that no suspects had been identified but that investigators including from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and potentially the FBI would be going through the scene Friday.
Well probably be there till dark tomorrow night because were going to have to go through each and every piece of it, he said.
After growing frustration with the citys executive orders, the first of which was issued March 23, the churchs pastor, Jerry Waldrop, confronted city officials at a demonstration at a local Walmart. The church also filed a lawsuit against the city in April.
A lawyer for the church said in the lawsuit that police had cited Waldrop on Easter for holding a service in violation of the citys order and had later shut down a Bible study.
In a blistering opinion filed last week in response to the lawsuit, Judge Michael Mills wrote that he feared that the church was proceeding in an excessively reckless and cavalier manner and with insufficient respect for the enormity of the health crisis which the COVID-19 pandemic presents.
The judge declined to block the citys stay-at-home order, as the church had requested, and noted that the city had, in a subsequent executive order, allowed for drive-in church services.
On Friday, Nick Fish, president of American Atheists, a group that uses the logo found at the scene, strongly condemned the church burning, calling it a heinous act of destruction.
Im disgusted that anyone would associate a symbol of our community with something so incompatible with our values as atheists, Fish said in a statement.
Arguments over whether religious services can be held in person have become increasingly contentious in recent weeks.
Some churches in Minnesota this week said they would resume services in defiance of the governors orders. That followed a federal judges ruling in North Carolina that allowed for indoor religious gatherings after the governor said they were largely banned. In California, five lawyers with the Justice Department said in a letter to the governor that the states restrictions to combat the virus discriminated against religious institutions, and more than 1,200 pastors signed a declaration protesting the restrictions.
McMillen said the fire had shocked Holly Springs, a city of fewer than 8,000 people.
Hopefully, with the Lords help, he said, we can get to the bottom of this as quickly as possible.

French Government Passes Hate Speech Law, Will Allow Law Enforcement To Run The Internet – Techdirt
Posted: at 3:28 pm
from the thanks-I-hate-it dept
Whatever ills there are in the world, the French government is pretty sure American tech companies should solve them. Or, at the very least, agree to be punished for failing to prevent the unpreventable.
Having decided Google should pay French newspapers for sending them traffic, the French government is finally enacting its long-threatened "hate speech" law -- one that took all the bad/backfiring ideas from Germany's hate speech legislation, reformatting it slightly for French sensibilities.
Officials claimed it was more difficult to remove anti-Semitic speech than it was to remove pirated content, which must have come as a surprise to several incumbent industries. The law falls into one of those "we'll know it when we see it" gray areas that tech companies will be forced to police. Facebook has already helpfully offered to forward user info to French authorities to ensure no online stupidity goes unpunished. And special interest groups have already offered their input, asking the government to treat things like the online disparagement of agriculture and livestock breeding as a criminal act.
The law is now in place, reports Politico.
After months of debate, the lower house of Parliament adopted the controversial legislation, which will require platforms such as Google, Twitter and Facebook to remove flagged hateful content within 24 hours and flagged terrorist propaganda within one hour. Failure to do so could result in fines of up to 1.25 million.
The law, which echoes similar rules already in place in Germany, piles more pressure on Silicon Valley firms to police millions of daily posts in Europe's two most populous countries.
Apparently this legislation has been at the top of the French government's to-do list for a couple of years now. Politico points out it's the first non-Covid-related legislation to have come up for a vote since the middle of March. Supposedly the French public demanded action, albeit indirectly.
"During the lockdown, hate speech online has increased ... We can no longer rely on the platforms' goodwill..." Junior Digital Affairs Minister Cdric O told the National Assembly ahead of the vote.
Having more people online more often is going to increase anything, not just "hate speech" the French government believes it can regulate into nonexistence. The bill's passage also comes front-loaded with irony. MP Laetitia Avia, one of the sponsors of the law, has been accused of making racist, homophobic, and sexist comments to her assistants.
The law has received plenty of criticism on its way to a vote, but nothing seems to have stopped its momentum -- not even the EU Commission's assertion that France's hate speech law is not compliant with EU law.
What's next for platforms is more of the impossible: moderation at scale targeting speech that isn't easy to target. Expect collateral damage, starting with satire and moving on to those who attempt to highlight hateful speech by others, only to find themselves censored and/or prosecuted for pointing out the bigotry of others.
This hate speech law has been cobbled onto existing anti-terrorism laws, turning law enforcement into the final arbiters of perceived offenses. Any notions of due process have been eliminated, streamlining the consolidation of power to a single branch of the government. This is digital rights group NGO La Quadrature's assessment of the law.
The separation of powers is entirely ruled out : it is the police who decide the criteria for censoring a site (in law, the concept of "terrorism" is broad enough to give it wide discretion, for example against demonstrators ); the police decide whether a site should be censored; it is the police who execute the sanction against the site. The judge is completely absent from the entire chain that leads to site censorship.
At the very least, the law is a handy way for the French government to insert itself into the moderation efforts of companies located halfway around the world. Setting up impossible mandates guarantees failure by those affected by them. And it's not just going to make companies like Facebook and Google reconsider their offerings in other countries. It's going to prevent new platforms and services from entering the market, since they'll be asked to do the impossible the moment they start hosting content created by French users. Meanwhile, French citizens are being asked to fund the diminishing of their own free speech rights -- all under the guise of stopping hate and terrorism. All the while, regulators can sit back on watch the tech company-targeting money printer go brrrrr.

Judge rules that viewing an iPhone lock screen qualifies as a search – AppleInsider
Posted: at 3:27 pm
A Seattle-based District Judge has ruled that law enforcement agencies may not look at a phone's lock screen without a warrant as it violates Fourth Amendment rights.
Law enforcement agencies must get a warrant before they attempt to unlock your phone, obtain data from the manufacturer, or come in possession of any information from the carrier. Now, for the same reasons, they may need to get one before they even look at a suspect's lock screen.
Joseph Sam was arrested in May 2019 and indicted on charges related to robbery and assault. He claims that during the arrest, one of the officers hit the power button to bring up the phone's lock screen though it's unclear whether or not the officer attempted to unlock it.
A year later, the FBI had obtained the phone as a piece of evidence against Sam. They turned on the phone and took a photograph of the lock screen, which displayed "Streezy" on it. Sam's lawyers then filed a motion to argue that the evidence should not be admissible, as it was obtained without a warrant, as pointed out by Ars Technica.
The judge overseeing the case, District Judge John Coughenour, agreed. In his ruling, he determined that the police looking at the phone during the arrest and the FBI later looking at the phone were two separate incidents. While the police looking at his phone may have been okay, the FBI taking a photograph of it was not.
The reason is that police are given more liberties during a lawful arrest turning on the phone may be allowed as part of an effort to inventory the suspect's personal effects. Because there was no way to see how the police handled the phone, there is not enough evidence to rule their actions unlawful.
However, when the FBI took possession of the phone, their intentions were clear. When the police took a picture of the lock screen, it qualified as unlawful search, violating Sam's Fourth Amendment rights.
The government's attorneys argued that lock screens are not private. The counter-argument was that a lock screen is specifically designed to be viewed by everyone who isn't the owner when they try to access the phone, and there is no reasonable expectation of privacy.
Judge Coughenour did not agree.
"When the Government gains evidence by physically intruding on a constitutionally protected area as the FBI did here it is 'unnecessary to consider' whether the government also violated the defendant's reasonable expectation of privacy," he wrote.
A suspect cannot be compelled to give the passcode to unlock their phone, as it is considered testimonial and is subsequently protected under the Fifth Amendment. Whether or not a suspect can be compelled to use a biometric feature such as TouchID or FaceID is another matter.

What’s Bill Barr hiding in the Mueller report? It could be Trump’s false statements under oath – Salon
Posted: at 3:27 pm
The Supreme Court on Wednesday temporarily blocked the release of special counsel Robert Mueller's report on his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, pending a response from the Justice Department.
The court was considering a House Judiciary Committee request for grand jury materials that the DOJ had redacted from the publishedreport. House lawyers argued the materials are relevant to pending impeachment proceedings against President Trump involving obstruction of justice.
Mueller, citing constitutional concerns, did not reach a conclusion "one way or the other" about whether the president committed the crime of obstruction, though his report made multiple pointed references to Congress' ability to do so.
The Supreme Court did not block the House request permanently. Rather, itput a temporary hold on an earlier order from an appeals court to release the full report to Congress, including all grand jury material.
Judge Judy W. Rogers, writing for the majority in that appellate court decision, argued that the congressional request wasstandard, and that it was"only the president's categorical resistance and the department's objection that is unprecedented."
If the DOJ fails to respond which is highly unlikely Congress will get to see the grand jury information. Most likely, Congress and the Justice Department will square off directlybefore the Supreme Court, in what could be a historic constitutional showdown.
Attorney General BillBarr has clung tightly to his redactions since releasing the report to the public last spring. Of all the blacked-out sections, Barr has fought hardest to keep the grand jury information secret.
It is conceivable, according to former federal prosecutors, that some of those redactions refer to what may seema far-fetched scenario:Mueller's grand jury could have considered the evidence on obstruction of justice, including testimony from the president himself.
A redacted passage in the report suggests that the grand jury saw Trump's writtenresponses to Mueller's questions which Mueller ultimately found unsatisfactory and which contained various contradictions and, according to Mueller himself, false statements.
Lying under oath to federal prosecutors is unequivocally a crime.
Almost allthe grand jury information is in Volume I of the report, the conspiracy section. Volume II, however, which considers obstruction of justice, contains a few isolated redactions that tell the story of Mueller's attempts to get Trump to sit for an interview.
Mueller initially requested an in-person interview, but after going back and forth with the president's lawyers for more than a year, the two sides agreed on written responses.
Thisparagraph points out that Trump "did not similarly agree to provide written answers to questions on obstruction topics "
At the end of that paragraph, Mueller sends the reader to Appendix C for more detail. But there, in the middle of the same narrative, that extra detail is also redacted.
Both passages make clear that Mueller's team, after being stonewalled by Trump's lawyers, decided to take some action related to the grand jury.
That action, whatever it was, seems to have informed Mueller's conclusion that he had the "legal justification" tosubpoena Trump, though he decided against it because, he writes, of the likely prospect ofextended court and constitutional battles.
Mueller believed that the "substantial evidence" he had gathered which included Trump's written responses contributed enough to "the anticipated benefits for our investigation and report" that it rendered a drawn-out court fight unnecessary.
Even if Mueller had won that fight, Trump could likely have refused to testify further, either by invoking executive privilege or exercising his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.
Furthermore, even if Trump had lied to Mueller in a sit-downinterview a blatant criminal act the legal framework Mueller had adopted would not have allowed him to indict the president. The ultimate result, then, would have been unchanged: A report that Congress could use as basis for the impeachment process.
We have seen no reports thatthegrand jury tookup questions about Trump's written responses, so what follows is highly speculative. But one intriguingsentence following one of the redacted grand jury passages reads:"Recognizing that the president would not be interviewed voluntarily, we considered whether to issue a subpoena for his testimony."
One explanation for that would be that at some point between receiving Trump's written answers and deciding not to subpoena him, Mueller submitted that testimonyto the grand jury.
When Barr testified beforethe Senate the month after he published the report, Sen.Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., repeatedly asked the attorney generalwhether Trump hadtestified to the grand jury.
Given that the president had clearly not done so, Barr's reluctance to answer directly was puzzling.
Leahy: The president of course declared many times publicly in tweets and at campaign rallies and all that he would testify. He never did testify, correct?
Barr: As far as I know.
Leahy: I think you know whether he testified or not.
Barr: As far as I know, he didn't testify.
Leahy: And Mr. Mueller found the written answers to be inadequate. Is that correct?
Barr: I think he wanted additional, but he never sought it.
Leahy: And the president never testified.
Barr: Well, he never he never pushed it.
A few minutes later, Barr broughtup the grand jury, which ledLeahy to ask him again if it was accurate that Trump never testified.
Barr replied, "I think that's correct."
Given the unusual circumstances, it's conceivable that one lawyercould understandwritten responses submitted to a grand jury as being grand jury testimony, whileanother might not. This could explain Barr's careful answer.
"I think Mueller may have presented the written answers to the grand jury," former U.S. attorney and national security expert Barbara McQuade told Salon in an email. "That could be considered 'testimony' before the grand jury, if they saw it."
Matt Miller, an MSNBC legal analyst and former director of the Office of Public Affairs for the Department of Justice under Barack Obama, understood the redacted material pertaining to the grand jury differently. "I think any discussion or decision whether to subpoena or not might be redacted," Miller said in an interview. "It appeared to be with Donald TrumpJr. That's what Ken Starr did with [former president Bill] Clinton."
But Barr did not in fact redact Mueller'sdiscussion of his decision notto subpoena President Trump.
McQuade suggested that she regretted Mueller's decision to forgo a subpoena. "I think that pushing Trump to testify at a grand jury would have been successful, but would have taken a long time," shesaid. "As we have seen with other matters, Trump is willing to fight all the way to the Supreme Court. It could have taken a year to get it resolved. That said, it still might have been worth the wait."
The Department of Justice has until June 1 to submit its petition to fight the case in the Supreme Court. Barr appears determined to prevent Congress from reading the redacted grand jury material for as long as he can.

Quantum Physicist Invents Code to Achieve the Impossible – Interesting Engineering
Posted: at 3:26 pm
A physicist at the University of Sydney has achieved something that many researchers previously thought was impossible. He has developed a type of error-correcting code for quantum computers that will free up more hardware.
His solution also delivers an approach that will allow companies to build better quantum microchips. Dr. Benjamin Brown from the School of Physics achieved this impressive feat by applying a three-dimensional code to a two-dimensional framework.
"The trick is to use time as the third dimension. I'm using two physical dimensions and adding in time as the third dimension," Brown said in a statement. "This opens up possibilities we didn't have before."
"It's a bit like knitting," he added. "Each row is like a one-dimensional line. You knit row after row of wool and, over time, this produces a two-dimensional panel of material."
Quantum computing is rampant with errors. As such, one of the biggest obstacles scientists face before they can build machines large enough to solve problems is reducing these errors.
"Because quantum information is so fragile, it produces a lot of errors," said Brown.
Getting rid of these errors entirely is impossible. Instead, researchers are seeking to engineer a new error-tolerant system where useful processing operations outweigh error-correcting ones. This is exactly what Brown achieved.
"My approach to suppressing errors is to use a code that operates across the surface of the architecture in two dimensions. The effect of this is to free up a lot of the hardware from error correction and allow it to get on with the useful stuff," Brown explained.
The result is an approach that could change quantum computing forever.
"This result establishes a new option for performing fault-tolerant gates, which has the potential to greatly reduce overhead and bring practical quantum computing closer," saidDr. Naomi Nickerson, Director of Quantum Architecture at PsiQuantum in Palo Alto, California, who is not connected to the research.

What does the Tenet title mean? Quantum mechanics and Einsteins theory – Explica
Posted: at 3:26 pm
Share
We recently saw the new trailer for Tenet by Christoper Nolan, but far from solving the doubts we have has caused us to have more questions. We also know that the plot is about a group of people trying to avoid the third world war. However, there is also something strange at stake here: an element that doubles time and quantum theory will be very important to it.
It is no secret that Christopher Nolan loves to play with time, like he does in his movies like Origin, which has caused that there are even fans who have theorized that Tenet may be a kind of sequel. The trailer makes it clear that it is about an agency that works to prevent the global catastrophe, and there is something called tenet, which seems to be a way to play over time. Kind of like manipulating what has happened instead of time travel.
But although Christopher Nolan sends us the message that we do not try to decipher the secrets ahead of time, we are very curious and want to know more. Like for example what the title of Tenet means.
Tenets literal translation is principle, dogma, or canon. And it has been shown that there is a fundamental limitation to our ability to measure time, combining quantum mechanics and Einsteins theory of general relativity. So it is something that the film will explore. Interestingly he played with something similar in Interstellar, since it showed that time passed differently depending on where they were. For this reason, a man stays in the ship and becomes very old while for the rest of them who travel to the aquatic planet hardly a few hours pass.
So to understand Tenet, either Christopher Nolan has made it very clear or you will have to know quantum physics and have Origin (2010) and Interstellar (2017) fresh in your memory.

Scientists Create a Cluster of 15 Trillion Entangled Atoms for the First Time Ever – Dual Dove
Posted: at 3:26 pm
A team of quantum researchers has carried out an experiment in which they managed to produce a cluster of entangled atomswith the help of quantum physics.
They got about 15 trillion atomsto share the space in a chamber of gas set at untypical temperatures, which sets a new record. Entangled states are incredibly fragile as in most cases, even a tiny commotion can undo the entanglement.
For those unfamiliar with the theory, quantum entanglement is the phenomenon at the core of quantum physics, where two particles can affect each other, irrelevant to the distance between them. Therefore, measuring one of them offers scientists the measurement of the other right away.
Although researchers do not completely understand why this event takes place, it does happen. However, demonstrating quantum entanglement is still a sensitive and challenging process. Entangled conditions require very specific settings in order to exist and survive, with the majority of the experiments in this field of research being performed at temperatures reaching absolute zero.
And this is why the new study is such a successful attempt. The physicists were able to design a hot, chaotic gas of atoms heated to approximately 450 Kelvin (177 degrees Celsius or 350 degrees Fahrenheit), filled with around 15 trillion entangled atoms, which is about 100 times more than have ever been analyzed before.
Artistic illustration of the atom cloud [Image: ICFO]These atoms were not isolated as calculations made by lasers depicted them crashing into each other, and there were, at times, thousands of other atoms between entangled couples. The analysis also showed the state of entanglement might be more powerful than earlier thought.
If we stop the measurement, the entanglement remains for about one millisecond, which means that 1,000 times per second, a new batch of 15 trillion atoms is being entangled, says quantum physicist Jia Kongfrom the Institute of Photonic Sciences in Spain (ICFO).
You must think that 1 ms is a very long time for the atoms, long enough for about 50 random collisions to occur. This clearly shows that the entanglement is not destroyed by these random events. This is maybe the most surprising result of the work.
Although most quantum entanglement experiments utilize ultra-low temperatures to maintain the interference like these clashes to a minimum, this research that used rubidium metal and nitrogen gas, shows that entanglement can thrive in much hotter conditions.
If this event would be usable in the next-generation of communication systems and quantum computers, we have to get it functioning in warmer, noisier settings, and that is something this new study paves the way towards.
One of the ways these discoveries could be helpful in the future is inmagnetoencephalographyor magnetic brain imaging, a technique that employs similar hot, high-density atomic gases to identify magnetic fields generated by brain activity. Entanglement could then make the method more delicate. However, for now, physicists have understood more about the laws of quantum entanglement, and what it can and cannot resist.
This result is surprising, a real departure from what everyone expects of entanglement, says ICFO quantum physicist Morgan Mitchell. We hope that this kind of giant entangled state will lead to better sensor performance in applications ranging from brain imaging to self-driving cars, to searches for dark matter.
The research has been published in the journalNature Communications.

Childfree and Childless The Difference – The Good Men Project
Posted: at 3:25 pm
Someone will often ask me to explain the difference between a person who is childfree and a person who is childless. Im happy to direct people to my book for further information. It is one of the most common questions I get from people in person, and online readers. Without quoting my book directly, I will summarize it here as best as possible.
A person who is childless feels the lack of having a child in their lives. They might have tried to conceive children without success, not knowing if it is because of a medical reason. Others may be childless because they cannot conceive children and have been told so by their doctors.
A person who is childfree is not childless by choice. Less means lacking in something. The choice not to have children is represented as a free choice. So, someone is not lacking in having children.
For further information, there are great numbers of online resources available. My personal favourite which I would encourage everyone to check out, isNon Parents, where I have contributed some content.

A word for mums who never wanted kids – The Standard

Women who didn't plan on becoming mothers but are mothers all the same are beginning to speak up (Photo: Shutterstock)
Whether or not a woman should have or choose not to have kids will always be a sensitive topic. Some women know that they wanted kids from a very young age, but for others, its not the case. Theres a part of society that doesnt believe there are women who really dont want kids and with that comes a lot of heavy judgement.

Within that community of women who have no desire to have kids, are those who actually end up having children. Life happens, things change and you find yourself breastfeeding at 1 a.m. while youre half asleep. Now you have to awkwardly accept the congratulations for your baby and a part of you wants to curl up into a ball and cry.
Heres some advice if you find yourself with kids when you never planned to have any.
i. Youre not alone
Society likes to isolate women who dont want to have kids. Youll face the pressure if you attempt to air your views and surprisingly, some family members will even resent you for it. And now that you have kids, theyll automatically assume that you changed your mind just like they said you would. Only a few will understand how you feel about the whole motherhood thing and eventually you might even meet some women who are going through what youre experiencing.
Recently, women who didnt desire to have kids have started being more vocal about how they feel, which is revolutionary. They might still feel comfortable sharing their stories anonymously but, at least you know youre not alone.
ii. Youre not a horrible mom
Its hard to admit that you didnt want to have kids in the first place. It doesnt mean that you hate your kids and it doesnt make you a horrible person. It just means youre being honest. Dont feel horrible about yourself if you dont enjoy carrying your baby or spending every single moment with them. Its going to be tough for a while but the fact still remains that motherhood isnt necessarily for everyone. Hold on to your truth regardless of how people feel.

iii. You shouldnt be forced to have more children
Things might just get worse if youre pressured into having more kids. Its one thing to amicably decide to have more kids with your partner but it shouldnt be a matter of forcing issues. Youre the one wholl bear the burden of carrying the baby through the nine months then go through the pain of labour and delivery. Perhaps youll even be the one to change the diapers throughout and handle everything else in the household so I believe you have the right to decide whether you can handle more kids or not.
iv. Never resent your children for it
Its not your childs fault. They didnt sign up to be born. Although you have a right to feel the way you do, you should never take out your anger on them. Every child deserves to be loved by their parents regardless of whether they were planned or not. Parenting will force you to do things you never wanted to but thats just how life is. You have to appreciate them for who they are and focus on the joy they bring.
v. Things might change
Some mums actually come round after some time. There are still those moments where you miss your childfree days but for the most part, they learn to embrace their new lives. Seeing your baby smile as they sleep peacefully or noticing they have the same dimple as you can actually turn things around. Itll be a gradual process of making lemonade out of the lemons that life gives you.
