Offset, Young Thug, And Others Are Hosting A Live Virtual Reality Stadium Concert – UPROXX
Posted: May 4, 2020 at 3:45 am
As the coronavirus pushes musicians everywhere to postpone their shows or cancel their tours entirely, many artists have turned to livestream performances to bridge the gap in live entertainment. Artists like Death Cab For Cuties Ben Gibbard, James Blake, and Post Malone have taken it upon themselves to give their fans virtual performances online. Now, Offset aims to raise the bar on digital concerts. Rather than host an Instagram live, Offset will join friends for a high-production virtual reality concert.
Virtual reality organization Oculus Venues partnered with Supersphere VR to bring an immersive and energetic concert experience to fans from their homes. Offset tapped fellow rappers Saint Jhn, Rich The Kid, and Young Thug to join him in the performance. The rappers will be broadcasting their performances into the virtual venue and donations from the event will be donated to the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
As part of the virtual experience, friends will be able to meet up inside the venue and enjoy the show together through VR headsets. According to Supersphere, the event will mimic a typical stadium show along with actual production and stagecraft that fans would typically enjoy on tour.
Offsets VR performance kicks off 4/29 at 7 p.m. EDT. Watch it here.
Some of the artists covered here are Warner Music Artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

What the Giants’ drafts think of the virtual reality of the mini-camps – The Press Stories
Posted: at 3:45 am
You come out of the top to get caught in the NFL 2020 draft. You are excited, more than ready to head to your new destination, put on the colors of your new team, get out on the grass and start showing your new coaches what they get.
Instead, there are these walking orders: Sit down and connect.
Of course, every rookie who comes in wants to go out there and show what they can do, said Chris Williamson, a University of Minnesota cornerback caught by the Giants in round seven. Football is such a physical game, but it is also part of the mental makeup. The guys who succeed at the NFL level come from the mental side of the game.
The mental aspect of the game is all that these novice NFL players have right now, arriving in the league during this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. On Friday, the Giants welcomed their draft picks and their undrafted free agents into a three-day rookie minicamp, all participants staying safe at home. The whole program, kept at a distance, placed an additional burden on players accustomed to working together as a group, taking what they learned in class and applying it to their roles on the field.
Because of everything thats going on right now, I think its the best option we have, said TJ Brunson, a South Carolina linebacker selected by the Giants in the seventh round. Personally, I dont have a problem with that. I prefer to be up there in person. If thats how we have to get our football in, then thats okay.
This unique scenario will benefit those who adapt best to a new way of teaching and learning. There is an online component in almost all current college programs, but this is not the normal way the NFL does business. Coaches who are familiar with classroom instruction must now make PowerPoint presentations. Players more comfortable with hands-on training should follow in an isolated environment.
First round pick Andrew Thomas will see attacking coach Marc Colombo prefer for the first time. Second-round pick Xavier McKinney will examine the defensive pattern in high school.
Submit questions about your favorite New York teams to receive an answer in a future letter
The advantage lies in those already prepared for it. Cornerback Darnay Holmes, the Giants fourth-round pick, earned his BA in African American Studies from UCLA in three years, becoming the first member of his family to graduate from university. Distance learning may not be a big challenge for him.
The school curriculum allowed me to implement a strict routine, one that kept me from being distracted by different distractions, said Holmes. So, having this living vision, my energy immediately aligned with it. It is certainly something that I implemented when I joined UCLA. It was: Im going to graduate in three years, then from there Im going to find what I want to do. Right away, I was a student, then after I graduated, it was like OK, how can I continue my athletic endeavor? And Im here now as a giant from New York. I am very excited.
The introduction and eventual mastery of the intricacies of his first NFL game book is next on Holmes list of mental challenges.
You have different tactics that you use to capture the concepts and patterns of takeover and make sure you understand these things, he said. I dont memorize, I want to grasp and understand it, so I can draw from it whatever the heat of the moment. I will understand it, so I can use it.
Williamson started two years in Florida before transferring and starting last season in Minnesota. He doesnt regret what he and the other recruits have to deal with at the start of their NFL journey.
I dont think it disadvantages anyone, said Williamson.
Brunson, captain of the team twice in South Carolina, is not so sure about that, but he is not interested in making excuses.
I think its a disadvantage for the recruits not to see where they are going to be and to be there in person, he said. We are also supposed to come and find out whats going on and play fast. I think that will help us when we get there. I hope its before August. If we dont get there until August, were supposed to hit the ground and be able to pick up everything thats going on. I think that gives us a chance to really understand the calls and defense and get out and play fast.

8 interesting things we found exploring NOAA’s virtual reality deepsea dives – The Weather Network
Posted: at 3:45 am
Tuesday, April 28th 2020, 3:18 pm - There's a lot to see under the sea.
NOAA has unveiled a series of virtual reality (VR) dives to help entertain the masses while health officials work to contain the spread of COVID-19.
There are several VR tours available from different regions, including American Samoa, the Florida Keys, Flower Garden Banks in the Gulf Coast of Texas, Georiga's Grays Reef, California's Monterey Bay, the Olympic Coast in Washington state, Stellwagen Bank in Maine, and Michigan's Thunder Bay.
Tours are comprised of 360-degree images that feature strange sea creatures like urchins and starfish, as well as coral and rock formations. Tours can be viewed from desktop computers, tablets, or smartphones and work with VR headsets or goggles.
The photos were taken by divers with special cameras, and NOAA intends to add to the gallery as more photos are submitted.
The project was created in collaboration with the Ocean Agency, a non-profit that NOAA plans to add to the gallery as divers take more shots. This collaboration between NOAA and the Ocean Agency, a nonprofit which raises awareness about ocean conservation.
We spent an afternoon indulging in NOAA's VR tours.
Here are 8 interesting things we found.
You'll find lots of coral in the VR gallery, but the seabeds in America Samoa's Airport Pool stand out, due to a massive coral bleaching event in 2015.
"The staghorn coral population in this area suffered massive mortalities during the 2015 bleaching event," NOAA says.
The bleaching event was the result of prolonged, elevated water temperatures, which stressed the corals to the point of expelling their symbiotic algae, which is what gives healthy coral their colour.
"Once the algae is expelled, the corals' white calcium carbonate skeleton is visible through the transparent coral tissue, giving it this bleached appearance," NOAA says.
"If the water temperatures stay too high for too long, and the corals do not re-recruit their algae, they may starve and die."
Florida's "Christ of the Abyss" is a famed, 3-metre-tall bronze statue that was lowered into the keys in August 1965.
Over the years it has become home to plants, fish, and invertebrates -- all of which have given the statue texture and colour.
Here's a photo of the Aquarius Reef Base, the world's only underwater research laboratory.
Scientists from around the world use the space to make observations, test new technologies, and train for future missions.
There's a lot going in the Flower Garden Banks, and not all of it is good.
In 2016, prolonged and elevated water temperatures caused a bleaching event, which can be seen in this image. You can also see a lionfish passing through. This popular, ornamental aquarium fish was likely introduced into Caribbean waters by someone who no longer wanted to care for it. It has since become a dangerous, invasive species. A USA Today report suggests the fish can decimate up to 80 per cent of native coral fish in a reef in as little as five weeks.
Barrel sponges are large animals that can have diametres up to 1.8 metres. They're commonly found in Gray's Reef and throughout the Caribbean.
No matter where you turn in this Monterey Bay dive you'll see purple sea urchins.
The species has experienced a population boom in the area recently by dining on kelp forests that were once prominent along the reefs.
Check out the range of marine life on this overhanging wall in the Olympic Coast. In this photo alone, you can see giant plumose anemone, starfish, urchins, and barnacles.
The Defiance sits at the bottom of Lake Huron at a depth of 185 metres. It sank in 1854 after a collision the John J. Audubon, which also sank a few miles away.

Censorship and Self-Censorship in Russia | Wilson Center
Posted: at 3:44 am
State control on information and media and aggressive pressure on journalists seeking to maintain their independence are critical elementsof the modern Russian state. Although the Russian constitution has an article expressly prohibiting censorship, in reality censorship is a constant factor in the life of the Russian media. Censorship is carried out both directly and indirectly by state pressure and through self-censorship by journalists. The Kennan Institute hosted three well-known Russian publicists, analysts, and commentators, Konstantin Sonin, Konstantin Eggert, and Gleb Cherkasov, to discuss censorship and self-censorship in Russia and its role in Russian society.
Konstantin Sonin, John Dewey Distinguished Service Professor, University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy
"I think the second main reason leaders want censorship is because they just do not want bad things said about them. So I think a lot of frustration is not that they really fear a revolution or they really feel that theyre going to be punished for their corruption, but they just find that its extremely unpleasant to read about their corruption. So they dislike it."
"Now that 20 years have passed of Mr. Putins rule, a lot of people dont need to be told what to say, and how to present certain topics. They already know. Its not self-censorship; its just living in censorship."
"Media does not exist in a vacuum. And, essentially, if Russian society figures out that its right to know is an important right for it, then a lot of things will fall into place."
Gleb Cherkasov, Journalist; Former Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Kommersant (Live translation from Russian)
"We are living at a time of technological revolution in the media, and it is much easier now to create your own media than it was five to ten years ago. And so, its really incomparable: [the] technological advances we have now [and] those we had in the 90s. If you want to create some kind of product, all of us can have the tools. It may not necessarily be professional, but we have the technological basis to just pull out a phone and be newsmakers."
"Over the past year and a half, like mushrooms after a rain, we see small media projects that are being done by young people, very different young people. These media projects are about various news [items], various themes, and cover different subjects. The process is evolving, and I personally call this Media 3.0. Its usually a small partnership of people who are not connected with an official media market who produce a product, satisfying their own professional ambitions."

Censorship in China: How Western Journalists Censor …
Posted: at 3:44 am
Theres no way to know precisely where the line is, much less when you might go over it, except by means of delicately tuned antennae, said Orville Schell, who has written many books on China and is the director of Asia Societys Center on U.S.-China Relations (where I was formerly a fellow). But onceyouve crossed over into the observation zone of the Party, you know it, and the question of denied access cannot help but come into your calculations about what you say and what you write.
Paul Mooney, the journalist who recently was denied a visa for Reuters, doesnt know when he crossed the line. It could have been his reporting on AIDS or Tibet, or the fact that he worked on the dissident Chen Guangchengs English-language memoir. He told me that he didnt pull his punches in China, simply because he didnt see the point of being there if he couldnt write what he wanted. Other Americans advised him to be more pragmatic. Even over the past year, waiting for my visa to come through, journalist friends, academics and China watchers said to me, stop posting critical things on Facebook, he said. Many foreign journalists do their Chinese visa applications in December, to get them in before the end of the year. Mooney told me that a European journalist approached him for an interview recently but did not plan to write a story until after his own visa had been renewed. How many foreign journalists are doing the same thing every year at this time, or are now doing this throughout the year? Mooney wondered.
Countless Chinese journalists do this all the time. Of course, for them the stakes are much higher: They could end up behind bars. Self-censorship is in my blood, an outspoken Chinese Internet dissident once proudly told me. His years of carefully dancing around political land mines kept him out of exile or jail. Murong Xuecun, a writer and an increasingly bold critic, recently admitted: I often remind myself: Don't engage in self-censorship, and I was confident I had succeeded in this, but so far I have not yet written a single article about Tibet issues, even though I lived in Llasa for three years; nor have I openly discussed Xinjiang issues, even though they are of great concern to me.
This is not to say that all Western reporters censor themselves in China. Over the past year or so, there has been startlingly bold reporting. Oft-cited examples include David Barbozas Pulitzer Prize winning reporting on the riches acquired by the family of Chinese premier Wen Jiabao, and somewhat ironically, Bloombergs own investigation into the wealth of the relatives of President Xi Jinping. Those news organizations paid a price for their reporting, but others write on sensitive topics and emerge unscathed. In 2010, Evan Osnos, former Beijing correspondent for The New Yorker, did a profile of the Dalai Lama, and he didnt get the boot. Some writers are less fearful of expulsion because they are not career China hands, or perhaps because theyareChina hands who have just had enough.Jeremy Goldkorn, a Beijing-based blogger and the director of the research firm Danwei, told me, Every time I apply for a visa or leave the country and come back in, the thought always passes through my mind that maybe this time its not going to work. But I've been in China for so long, that Im thinking it would be a good thing if they kicked me out.
