Bad Television For Bad Times: Why ‘Tiger King’ Resonates In The Age Of Pandemic – wgbh.org
Posted: April 8, 2020 at 6:49 am
Note: Spoilers ahead.
To flip an old clich on its head, Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness may not be the television series we need, but its proving to be the one we want.
There isnt a single sympathetic major character in this seven-part Netflix extravaganza; every last one is involved in the abuse of animals, of humans or of both. The conscience of the series, if you can call her that, may have killed her second husband and fed him to the tigers. Or stuffed him down a septic tank. Or something.
Call it television for the pandemic. Were home, surrounded by death and disease in the news and, perhaps, in our own lives. Were scared of getting sick, scared of losing our jobs, scared because weve lost our jobs. Our cruel, incompetent president has been botching matters since early January and is yelling at us every evening about governors who have dissed him, journalists who have angered him and unproven elixirs he wants us to take because, as he likes to say, What do you have to lose?
Emerging from this vortex of insanity is the Tiger King, a.k.a. Joe Exotic, a.k.a. Joseph Maldonado-Passage, a.k.a. Joseph Schreibvogel, the gay, wildly extroverted, garishly adorned, country music-singing, political office-seeking, assault weapon-toting proprietor of the G.W. Zoo in Oklahoma a private reservation where adults and children can play with adorable tiger cubs, where underpaid, overworked employees are fed discarded cold cuts from Walmart, and where, as we learn, big cats that are no longer useful are shot and buried out back.
Maldonado-Passage is both paranoid and out of control and he is obsessed with a woman named Carole Baskin, who, along with her worshipful third husband, runs a sanctuary for big cats in Florida and who crusades to put Maldonado-Passage and others like him out of business. Preening before the cameras, Baskin is as self-obsessed as her nemesis, though lacking his talent for self-destruction. As for the destruction of others well, there is the matter of her second husband, whose 1997 disappearance has yet to be solved.
The filmmakers, Eric Goode and Rebecca Chailkin, present a veritable bestiary of other odd characters as well, including Maldonado-Passages three husbands (one of whom blows his brains out while on meth), an employee who returned to work just a week after a tiger bit her arm off and the owners of other big-cat exhibits all of whom come off as far more sinister and calculating than the star of the show.
The end game comes into view during the last three episodes, when a career criminal whod taken over the zoo, a would-be hitman and a government informant tell federal authorities that Maldonado-Passage had paid $3,000 to have Baskin killed. (One is reminded of Dr. Evil in Austin Powers threatening to destroy the world unless he is paid one million dollars!) Maldonado-Passage is convicted of attempted murder and animal abuse.
Did he do it? Theres no question that he often bragged on camera about wanting to kill Baskin, and he dramatized his wishes, as one does, by shooting mannequins and holding up a jar that appeared to contain her severed head. It seems likely that he was enticed into going further than he would have on his own at the instigation of his erstwhile business partner, who wanted him out of the way. But that certainly doesnt mean he was framed, as he claims.
Needless to say, the appeal of Tiger King is entirely voyeuristic. My wife and I watched the first part on our sons recommendation. She dropped out because she couldnt stand the animal cruelty (not really shown but ever-present as a background theme) and then came back for the last part because she wanted to see Maldonado-Passage behind bars. I stuck with it against my better judgment because it was like the proverbial car crash I couldnt look away.
Human suffering is dangled before the viewer like raw meat, writes the critic Doreen St. Flix in The New Yorker, adding later on: The documentary is a kaleidoscope of terrible taste.
Why do we watch stuff like this? Human nature being what it is, we want people we can feel superior to, who get whats coming to them, whose success is built on evil until, one day, it all comes crashing down. And I think we need even more of that sort of thing during a terrifying time like the one were living in.
We are now hearing that, because of Tiger King, the authorities are pursuing new leads in the disappearance of Carole Baskins second husband, and that, with Maldonado-Passages help, other big-cat exhibits around the country are being shut down. See? Some good is coming out of this freak show.
Perhaps. But I am reminded of a book that New Yorks Daily News published upon its 50th anniversary some years ago that included the famous 1928 front-page photo of Ruth Snyder being killed in the electric chair for the murder of her husband. The book piously claimed that publication of the picture led to the abolition of the death penalty in New York.
Maybe it did. But it also sold a hell of a lot of papers.

NSA stays connected through closure – The Suffolk News-Herald – Suffolk News-Herald
Posted: at 6:48 am
Online learning is not a new concept for students at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, but the length of time they will have to use it is new.
While NSA has a virtual learning plan that it has used in cases of inclement weather, when it closed school due to the coronavirus pandemic, the school held off on virtual learning for a week.
Rather than rush right in, faculty took time to research additional online tools to deliver lessons, to practice using them and to create lessons for several weeks.
Head of School Debbie Russell said students are following a shortened schedule in order to be mindful of screen time and their overall well-being. During their other time, students can connect with teachers during daily virtual office hours, complete assignments or pursue hobbies.
Lower school teachers are spending time individualizing learning for every student.
All students have opportunities to learn at the same time to help maintain class connections, but will also have learning time on their own, too.
It has been amazing to watch our community transition to virtual learning, Russell said. Our students are resilient, and of course, are accustomed to technology, so most have made the transition very easily.
Russell said faculty have adapted to the new technology, as they use a number of platforms in their teaching now. They include Googles G Suite for Education, which includes video conferencing through Google Hangouts and Google Meet, as well as Google Classroom. Teachers are also using platforms such as Zoom, Seesaw and EdPuzzle.
Our faculty has really risen to the occasion, Russell said, and is continuing to deliver a quality educational experience for our students virtually.
Middle school students at NSA all have laptops, and high school students had been bringing their own electronic device to use at school. She said most lower school students have been borrowing devices from a family member or friend to access lessons.
The faculty is focused on covering the essentials now, Russell said. At the end of the school year, they will evaluate what was accomplished and will make any necessary adjustments to the curriculum for the following school year. As an independent school, we have the authority to easily make those changes.
NSAs second trimester ended the week before schools closed, giving the school somewhat of a natural break in the grading period, Russell said. In the third trimester, students will receive points, rather than letter grades, for participating in synchronous lessons, for completing assignments and for mastery of skills and content. Third trimester grades will then be averaged with the first two trimester grades for a final year-end grade, Russell said.
Russell said the school will make every effort to hold graduation for seniors, noting the impact on closing for seniors is more social and emotional than academic, especially with many of them having been at NSA for their entire education.
Unfortunately, with school coming to an abrupt end, our seniors didnt have an opportunity to say goodbye to everyone, or to participate in the many unique year-end celebrations that were planned to honor their achievements, Russell said. As a community, we definitely feel a sense of loss for these celebrations, so we are making every effort to hold graduation, even if its in August.
Russell expects a seamless transition for students when they are able to return to school next year. Faculty will evaluate the curriculum to make any needed adjustments for the next school year. She said they are resilient and will be excited to get back to school.
Though parents of students have adapted to help their children with learning, and students have been reconnecting with their classmates and teachers virtually, the school is offering its support for students and families who need help.
All of our families are struggling with how to balance working from home, parenting and assisting young children with school while trying to work from home along with the emotional toll the virus, stay-at-home order and the economy have had on everyone, Russell said.
In the meantime, the school is also making sure that everyone stays socially connected, even if they have to stay socially distant. Russell said NSA has always been a community within itself, and is keeping connections going through social media, videos, photos, emails and phone calls.
Now more than ever, these connections are important, Russell said, so we will be stronger as a community and as individuals when this is all over.

What is the National Security Act, (NSA),1980 and when is it imposed? – Jagran Josh
Posted: at 6:48 am
Recently, the National Security Act,1980 or 'Rasuka' is imposed in various cases in different states of India. Recently, many offenders are arrested under this law for attacking corona warriors i.e. Doctors, Nurses, housekeeping staff and security personals.
Let us know in this article, what is the National Security Act (NSA), or Rasuka, when is it imposed and what kind of punishment provisions are there under it?
What is the National Security Act, 1980
The National Security Act (NSA) came into existence on 23 September 1980 during Indira Gandhi's government.
The National security Act, empowers the Central Government and State Governments to detain a person to prevent him/her from acting in any manner against the welfare and security of the country, damaging the Indian relations with foreign countries, obstructing the maintenance and supply of essential services to the community.
The suspect can be kept in jail for 12 months without any charge under the NSA. This is the most vital and critical provision of this whole act.
Provisions of the National Security Act, 1980 (NSA)
1. If a person, does not believe in the rule of law, harms the Indian relations with other countries of the world, disrupt the maintenance or supply of public services, attack police personnel on duty and creates the threat to the national security; can be arrested by the concerned government under this act.
Recently, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh have registered FIR under this act against some anti-social elements.
2. Under NSA, the concerned officer has the power to keep the suspect in captivity for 5 days without assigning any reason while in special circumstances this period can be up to 10 to 12 days. After this, the officer needs the permission of the state government for further detention.
3. The arrested person is not entitled to the aid of any legal practitioner in any matter connected with the proceedings before an advisory board. This panel is constituted by the government for dealing with NSA cases.
4. This law empowers the central government to arrest or expel a foreigner to control his activity.
5. Some people have been booked under Rasuka for misbehaving with doctors, for transferring their corona infection to other healthy people and attacking the police personals in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi.
Imprisonment under the NSA
The National Security Act (NSA), empowers the concerned government to keep a suspect in jail for 12 months without any charge. But this period can be extended if the government finds fresh evidence against the suspect.
If an officer arrests a suspect, he has to explain the reasons to the concerned state government. Until the state government approves this arrest, the maximum period of arrest cannot be more than twelve days.
Keep in mind that arrest orders can be issued by the District Magistrate or Commissioner of Police under their respective jurisdiction.
Chandrashekhar Ravana, the founder of 'Bhim Army', was also arrested under 'Rasuka' and kept in jail for a year but released later on.
Criticism of the National Security Act (Rasuka)
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) does not include cases under the NSA in its data because very few FIRs are registered under this law. Therefore, there is no accurate information about the number of arrested persons under this act.
Under this law, a suspect can be arrested without giving any reason and even he/she is not allowed to hire a lawyer for some time. That is why this law is also compared to the British Rowlatt Act. According to many experts, the state governments have also used NSA as 'Extra-Judicial Power'.
So in conclusion, it would be wise to say that a law should be for the people; while people should not be for the law.

NSA Sheep Event and NSA Scotsheep 2020 postponed – Agriland.co.uk
Posted: at 6:47 am
The National Sheep Association (NSA) has announced plans to proceed with a revised summer schedule, after two of its flagship events were cancelled due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
After taking time to review current Government recommendations, the NSA said it was pleased to be able to announce new plans to proceed with its popular summer events, albeit a little later in the year than previously scheduled.
Many popular summer agricultural events including the Royal Highland Show, Balmoral Show, the Great Yorkshire Show, and the Royal Welsh Show have already been cancelled or postponed.
NSA Sheep Event, the flagship event of the organisation will now take place on Monday, October 19, 2020, once again at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern, Worcestershire.
NSA Sheep Event 2020 organiser, Helen Roberts said: The NSA prides itself on being a member-led organisation and delivering our iconic event is incredibly important to us.
However, with the Government advising against attending mass gatherings and further action relating to social distancing and self-isolation and unnecessary travel, NSA felt there was no other option at this time than to postpone our main event until October and we are very grateful to have this date made available to us.
This will be a difficult year for the nation as a whole. The NSA and many other associations and businesses will all be affected by the financial outcome of this scenario but we do hope both our members as well as all sheep farmers and the wider sheep industry will support as we now recommence plans for what we are confident will again be a fantastic event.
Also taking place this year is NSA Scotsheep, the main event of the industry in Scotland. Differing slightly from the NSA Sheep Event in Worcestershire, NSA Scotsheep is set to take place on-farm, kindly hosted in 2020 by Robert and Hazel McNee at their home at Over Finlarg, Tealing, Angus.
The event had been planned for early June but has now tentatively been moved to Wednesday, July 8 a date that the NSA Scottish Region executive committee is aware is rather hopeful in the current climate but one they still hope can be achievable.
NSA Scotsheep organiser Euan Emslie said: We have very tentatively set a new date which most importantly suits the hosts who need to fit this event around their farming operation.
NSA Scottish Region understands that this date is optimistic and that it may need to be reviewed again in light of the future situation with COVID-19, but in the hope that we can continue, we have lodged our application for the necessary licenses and will keep the situation under close review.
Should NSA Scottish Region not be granted a license for the July date, then NSA Scotsheep 2020 will regrettably have to be rescheduled until next year with a new date at the beginning of June.
NSA Scotsheep 2020 chairman Willy Millar added: We are really disappointed to have to postpone this event although current circumstances give us no choice.
The committee also realises that choosing a date in early July brings risks so we are looking at alternative dates for the first couple of weeks in June next year, should the restrictions on social distancing and gatherings of people not be lifted in the next few months.
Our firm belief is that NSA Scotsheep is a crucial event for the farming community and sheep industry in Scotland and further afield.
There is no doubt that people will be keen to get back to a more normal way of life as soon as possible while following government advice on the situation.
Plans for both NSA events are well underway with organisers promising many new and existing attractions.
Further updates on the future of both events will follow as needed.

Study suggests humans transported badgers from Britain to Ireland – Agriland
Posted: April 7, 2020 at 4:09 pm
A new study into badger genetics has shown those from thenorth-eastern and south-eastern counties of Ireland share genetics with badgers in Britain.
The study, just published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, was carried out by scientists from the Agri-food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) in Northern Ireland and suggests people may have played a role in bringing badgers to Ireland.
The team worked with colleagues from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the Waterford Institute of Technology in the Republic of Ireland, to assemble a larger, island-wide set of 545 badger samples.
Badgers from the island of Ireland have previously been the subject of several genetic studies which compared their heritage to those of badgers from other European countries.
However, previous studies were based on small numbers of animals from only a few Irish locations. The extent of the influence of British animals on the Irish population, and the timing and mechanism of any potential import events remained unclear.
Ireland has fewer mammal species than Britain and continental European neighbours because of its geological history.
Ireland became an island around 15,000 years ago, at a time when glaciers were retreating from northern Europe, permitting recolonisation by animals that had retreated to more temperate, southern climes at the height of the last ice age.
Consequently, natural colonisation routes for animals into Ireland were barred for all but those species that could fly.
As a result, how Ireland came to acquire the fauna it possesses in modern times, is one of the great puzzles of modern biology.
These revealed that Irish badgers had a mixed genetic profile sharing similarities with animals from Britain and Scandinavia and suggesting they may have been moved from those territories into Ireland by human agency.
The new study by AFBI looked into a much bigger sample size than typical before. Aside from the 545 local samples, collaborators at the Universities of Glasgow, Oxford and Exeter and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) provided a further 91 samples from badgers from Britain.
The population genetic analyses revealed that badgers with British genetic heritage are localised in north-eastern and south-eastern counties in Ireland and that human-aided import of badgers from Great Britain, around 700 years ago, is the most probable explanation.
Although anecdotal, it is notable that humans from these same regions in Ireland also exhibit genetic and genealogical links to Great Britain, an observation thought to result from the Plantations of Ireland that occurred in the 13th and 16th centuries.
The findings improve scientists knowledge of how Irelands modern mammal populations have been formed as well as the population structure of badgers in Ireland.

Indians do not have genetic protection against coronavirus, published research incorrectly interpreted – Alt News
Posted: at 4:08 pm
An opinion piece published on Livemint by Sandipan Deb claimed that COVID-19 will not affect Indians as they have the genetics for a sturdier immune system.
When questioned on Twitter, the author, also a founder of Swarajya Magazine, cited a Nature Asia article titled, More immunity in Indian genes, as his source.
The Nature Asia article (2008), based on the research study by Du and colleagues (2008), published in the journal Genes & Immunity was conducted by a team of scientists from the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), USA, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, India (AIIMS), and National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), USA.
More immunity in Indian genes The title of Nature Asia magazine article.
Our bodies have one of the toughest immune systems in the world. We have grown up surrounded by so much filth and pollution that our natural resilience is much stronger than people in the developed world. Sandipan Deb in Livemint.
False.
1. The Livemint article is based on a superficial understanding of the title of the Nature Asia, not its text.
The Nature Asia article is titled More immunity genes in Indians. However, the article itself does not make any such claims that, on the basis of the research study quoted, that Indians will be protected from the coronavirus pandemic or other infections due to their biologically inherited resilience. It simply states that Indians may have more genes linked with immunity as per the data. Also, one of the authors of the article and the research study Rajalingam Raja wrote, Whether having more activating KIR genes is an advantage or disadvantage for Indians remains to be elucidated.
This means that the genes tested through this study are not a piece of conclusive evidence that the contested tougher immunity will be an advantage for Indians in any way.
2. The Nature Asia article is based on a research study based on a single gene polymorphism in various ethnicities.
The Nature Asia article is based on a research study which relies upon a single gene KIR2DL5 polymorphism in many ethnicities including Indian, East Asian, white (Caucasian) and black (African Americans), suggesting that the gene is not unique to Indians only. Also, no evidence suggests that the presence of gene translates to gene expression or phenotypic change (e.g. higher immunity) in this case.
Nature Asia article based its claim on a gene polymorphism study by Du and colleagues (2008). Genetic polymorphism is the occurrence of multiple forms of a single gene which is expressed in the same population as a trait or a phenotype (Bull, 2004). It is similar, but not the same, as varying levels of pigmentation in eyes, hair or skin colour.
The study quoted showed the nature of polymorphism of one gene KIR2DL5 in four ethnic groups: Caucasians (European race, mostly white), Asian-Indians (South Asians), African-Americans and Asians (East Asians, i.e. Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese and Filipino).
KIR2DL5 (or CD158f) is the last identified KIR gene (the inhibitory receptor expressed on the surface of immune cells), with KIR2DL4, it makes up a structurally divergent lineage conserved in different primate species such as humans. The percentage frequency of this KIR2DL5 gene in Indians is used as an indicator of higher immunity.
The graph from the research study illustrates that the percentage frequency of KIR2DL5 (A and B, polymorphic forms of KIR2DL5 gene) is higher in Asian Indians than the other ethnic populations studied. However, the graph below from the same study suggests that the Individuals carrying the KIR2DL5 gene vary substantially among populations ranging in frequency from 35-85%. Thus, as per the authors conclusions, higher immunity can be found in every ethnicity ranging from 35-85% population, not just in Indians.
Hence, with such large variability in genes in each population, it is impossible to deduce that the researchers certainly found the KIR2DL5 gene more frequently in Indian ethnicities, as compared to other ethnicities.
Also, the research paper doesnt claim that this higher frequency in Asian-Indians population is linked to a better immune system or more natural killer cells in the body. In fact, there are no conclusions drawn on any ethnic group being genetically superior or inferior regarding immunity.
3. Is the occurrence of genes (KIR2DL5 gene) linked with immunity synonymous with its traits (tougher immunity)?
The occurrence of more genes in a population isnt always synonymous with better traits. This is mainly because a greater amount of genes doesnt always translate to a protein abundance, which consequently becomes a trait. That is, the presence of genes doesnt always lead to the presence of characteristic traits related to the expression of the gene.
Sometimes, polymorphic changes in natural killer cells can also be associated with a susceptibility towards certain diseases (Orange, 2002). Thus, more correlative studies should be conducted where a higher frequency of KIR2DL5 gene results in an increased immunity regardless of ethnicity.
4. Smaller sample size
The beneficial effects of higher frequency of a polymorphic gene in a population can only be established after detailed protein, genomics and evolutionary studies with large sample size. But in this study, only 96 Indian genomes were studied as opposed to 250 Caucasians. Hence, these higher percent frequencies of polymorphs KIR2DL5 gene could also be an artefact resulting from a smaller sample size.
Only 96 non-randomised samples for the Asian-Indian group were sourced from New Delhi, which is a minuscule representation for the Indian population. These sample sizes were further reduced after identification of KIR2DL5 positive individuals.
Also, the Nature Asia article further claims that Indians gained the activating KIR (killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors) genes because of natural selection to survive the environmental challenges during their pre-historic coastal migrations from Africa. This conclusion is not based on any evidence.
Dr Mehra, former Dean of AIIMS, in his opinion piece in The Print mentions the results from the same study that includes SK Sharma of AIIMS, to make his claims about the genetic advantage of Indians over Caucasians with respect to immunity against the coronavirus. Additionally, Dr Mehra also included other factors that may give Indians advantage broad-based immunity due to overexposure to other pathogens, and epigenetic factors such as environment and consumption of Indian spices in cuisine. However, since the novelty of the virus and the increasing pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 in India, these claims remain without any research or evidence in Science.
The Nature Asia article published a misleading title on the basis of a genetics study which was termed inconclusive by the authors in their own research study. This title formed the basis of the Livemint article by Mr Deb.
The Nature Asia authors generalised their misleading article about Natural Killer cells (NK) to immunity genes. Natural killer cells are a small component of what makes up human immunity, not the expansive immune system.
Later, in the Livemint article, the Nature Asia article was used to claim a blanket superiority of the immune system of Indians. Mr Deb stated that Indians immune system is more robust than the people in the developed world to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.
Such dangerous opinion pieces with no understanding of the genetics of immunity have the potential to drive people to be careless with the protocols issued by the government on social distancing and other precautions or to encourage reckless behaviour during a critical situation.

Axonics Submits PMA Supplement to U.S. Food & Drug Administration to Expand Full-Body MRI Labeling for 3T Scans – Business Wire
Posted: at 4:07 pm
IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Axonics Modulation Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AXNX), a medical technology company that has developed and is commercializing novel implantable sacral neuromodulation (SNM) devices for the treatment of urinary and bowel dysfunction, today announced the submission of a premarket approval (PMA) supplement to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for the purpose of gaining full-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) conditional labeling for 3.0T MRI scans.
In September 2019, the FDA approved the Axonics r-SNM System with full-body conditional labeling for 1.5T MR scanners. Axonics has since performed all the required tests to support a PMA supplement for full-body conditional labeling on 3.0T MR scanners for the implantable components of its r-SNM System. The FDA review timeline for labeling expansion PMA supplements is 180 days.
Raymond W. Cohen, Axonics CEO commented, The Axonics r-SNM System is already approved for 1.5T and 3.0T full-body MRI scans in Europe. While only approximately 15% of MRI scanners operating in the U.S. are 3.0T, we believe it was a worthwhile investment to conduct the testing and analyses required for this filing and we are confident our PMA supplement will meet all criteria for FDA approval. This submission further demonstrates Axonics commitment to continuous innovation for the benefit of patients, clinicians and the healthcare system.

SNM therapy has been employed to reduce symptoms and restore pelvic floor function for the past two decades. Reimbursement coverage is well established in the U.S. and Europe. The Axonics System is the first long-lived rechargeable SNM system approved for sale in the world, and the first to gain full-body MRI conditional labeling. Functional Food and Beverages Market to Rise at 8.49% CAGR till 2026; Increasing Health Awareness in Urban Areas to Fuel Market Expansion: Fortune…
Posted: at 4:07 pm
Pune, April 07, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The global functional foods and beverages market size is projected to reach USD 412.22 million by 2026, exhibiting a CAGR of 8.49% during the forecast period. Increasing malnutrition worldwide will be the primary growth driver for this market in the near future, shares Fortune Business Insights in its new report, titled Functional Foods and Beverages Market Size, Share & Industry Analysis, By Type (Cereals & Grains, Fats & Oils, Dairy Products, Bakery Products, and Other Functional/Fortified Foods) Distribution Channel (Supermarkets/Hypermarkets, Convenience Stores, Online Retail, and Others), and Regional Forecasts, 2019 2026.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), close to 462 million people are underweight and 52 million children under the age of 5 are suffering from wasting. Moreover, roughly 45% of deaths among children below 5 years of age occur due to under-nutrition. As a result, governments have spurred into action in both developed and developing countries. For instance, in 2019, the UK government made it mandatory to fortify flour with folic acid to prevent occurrence of congenital disabilities in children. Similarly, in July 2019, the Indian government announced distribution of rice fortified with folic acid, Vitamin B12, and iron through the Public Distribution System (PDS). The market for functional foods and beverages, thus, stands to gain from these developments.
The functional food and beverages market report states that the value of this market stood at USD 216.25 million in 2018. Other than this, the report contains the following:

Market Driver
High Nutritional Value of Functional Foods to Spike Uptake
The popularity of fortified food and beverages has been steadily climbing in recent years, mainly due to the hectic and unhealthy lifestyles people are leading in urban areas. As a result, there is a growing demand for nutrition-rich food and beverage items fueled by rising health and wellness concerns. Functional foods have emerged as an attractive option for many consumers, given their wide-ranging and long-term benefits.
For example, functional foods and beverages fortified with omega-3 fatty acids can boost brain function, secure heart health, and reduce inflammation. The benefits of functional foods are not limited to just chronic and lifestyle-based disorders; they have proven efficacy in tackling the effects of under-nourishment too. For example, the National Institutes of Health reported that the introduction of wheat flour fortified with iron in Jordan led to 50% reduction in the incidence of iron deficiency anemia among children.
Regional Analysis
Evolving Lifestyles in Asia-Pacific to Aid the Region Register Impressive CAGR
Asia-Pacific is slated to dominate the functional food and beverages market share and grow at a CAGR of 9.20% during the forecast period. The central reason for this rise is the rapidly changing lifestyles of people that are increasing the prevalence of chronic conditions in the region. An example of this is the increasing consumption of fast or junk food. Thus, there is a surging demand for nutritional foods as people are getting more health conscious, especially in India. In addition to foodstuffs, there is also a high demand for functional hydration, particularly in tropical countries where water loss from the body is high. After Asia-Pacific, North America is expected to be the second-largest region for this market, anticipated to register a CAGR of 7.06% in the forthcoming years.
