OPINION: Burnout and depression are two sides of the same coin – Pamplin Media Group

Posted: October 9, 2021 at 7:44 am

Y. Pritham Raj: 'As October is Depression Awareness Month, let's challenge ourselves to take a proactive approach.'

Amid COVID, another epidemic is on the horizon.

Mental health issues resulting from and exacerbated by COVID have created a second crisis. Between 2019 and 2020, the prevalence of depression increased fourfold. There are predictions that by 2035, depression will be the number-one cause of morbidity in the world.

As October is Depression Awareness Month, let's challenge ourselves to take a proactive approach.

One way is to look for the signs and symptoms of depression in yourself and others. There are many signs/symptoms of depression besides low mood. This includes sleeping more or less than usual, constant fatigue, restlessness, anxiety, irritability, poor appetite, unexplained weight gain or loss, and increased substance use. The actual diagnosis of major depression is made when symptoms persist for two weeks.

Isolation and taking care of kids or parents have taken their toll. This new way of living may prevent us from checking in with family, friends, and colleagues in our usual ways.

Burnout from stressful jobs can lead to depression. If you recognize these signs in yourself or someone you know, please reach out for help or advice. Your health insurance, a primary care doctor, a loved one, or NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) helplines are all available resources.

It is essential to know that depression is treatable. Depending upon the type of depression, many people find relief through talk therapy and/or a course of antidepressants (that help correct how the brain uses neurotransmitters). Now there are even more options, like TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation), which stimulates underactive brain areas related to mood. Most insurance plans cover these treatments.

Here are three ways to take care of our mental health:

Move your body. Physical activity is incredibly important for mental health! In one study, aerobic exercise had the same effect on mood as antidepressant medication. Just 30 minutes of walking or something similar each day will undoubtedly boost your mood and sense of wellbeing.

Reflect on the good. One of my favorite things to recommend is the "Three Good Things" exercise. At the end of each day, name three good things that happened to you. Go beyond simply thinking about what happened to you and consider your active part in it. I often do this with my kids at night. Research has shown that this simple practice helps build resiliency and prevents burnout.

Honor your passions. Our jobs and daily tasks don't always include activities that feel fulfilling. However, it's been proven that doing a little bit of what we're passionate about every week significantly impacts mental health and prevents burnout.

If you can, try to find a career you enjoy or focus on what you like about work. If that isn't possible, make efforts to do what you love outside of your job, whether it's volunteer work or a hobby.

It may be difficult to stay positive, but simple practices like these three can boost mood and wellbeing. Share these ideas with your loved ones, and let's combat burnout and depression together.

Y. Pritham Raj, M.D., is chief medical officer at Active Recovery TMS, a mental health clinic specializing in transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) as a treatment for depression and OCD. He is also an associate professor at Oregon Health & Science University in the departments of internal medicine and psychiatry.

Bomb threat non-credible; early dismissal for CHS and TMS per policy (updated 9/30 at 7:56pm) – MercerMe

Posted: October 1, 2021 at 7:44 am

A bomb threat made to Hopewell Valley Central High School (CHS) this morning was a non-credible threat to which both the high school staff along with law enforcement partners are proceeding as per policy, according to Hopewell Township Police Director Robert Karmazin. Karmazin told MercerMe at 12:36pm today that he expects that the scene will be cleared shortly.

HVRSD School Superintendent Rosetta Treece sent a message to CHS and Timberlane Middle School families at approximately 1pm notifying them that the students will all be dismissed early today. The message reads:

Due to a bomb threat we received at the high school today, we are sending all students at Timberlane Middle School and Central High School home for early dismissal. We ask that parents/guardians whose children were scheduled to ride the bus today not report to the campuses to pick up those students. If you were scheduled to pick your child up today, you will be able to pick them up at Timberlane after the buses are cleared and students who drive have been dismissed. All sports at the middle and high school have been canceled. It may take some time for students to arrive home, so we ask for your patience.

This is a precautionary step to ensure that all staff and students are safe as we continue to conduct an investigation and thorough search of the buildings. We will share more information as soon as possible.

MercerMe will continue to watch this story and report as events develop.

Update: At approximately 5pm, September 30, HVRSD families received the following email:

Dear Hopewell Valley Families,

This morning, a student reported seeing a picture of a bomb on social media along with a threat to CHS. The Hopewell Township police were notified immediately and they are investigating the situation. Three suspicious packages were found and cleared. As a precautionary measure, the high school students were safely evacuated to Timberlane Middle School while the high school was thoroughly searched and secured using dogs. There will be a significant police presence in and around the building tomorrow to ensure safety.

We will continue this investigation and, hopefully, find the individual(s) responsible for posting this threat. We will also work with teachers, guidance counselors, and staff to remind students about the seriousness of this action. If you have any information about the threat, please contact our tip line via telephone 609-737-4000 x 8477 (TIPS) or email tips@hvrsd.org.I recognize that sending this letter may heighten your concern, but I felt it necessary to communicate clearly regarding matters related to students. Hopewell Valley is a wonderful and welcoming place, but unfortunately not immune from the realities of the time in which we live.

Sincerely,Rosetta D. Treece, Ed.D.Superintendent of Schools

Brandon TMS Offers Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation For Depression – The Free Press

Posted: at 7:44 am

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL. Transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, is an innovative and FDA-approved treatment for depression.Brandon TMS and Psychiatryin Brandon, Florida, has also had success using TMS off-label to treat a wide range of other mental health conditions.

Because TMS has not received the extensive research attention of many other mental health treatments, you may have questions about how it works.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, is a type of brain stimulation Brandon TMS and Psychiatry uses to treat depression and numerous other mental health concerns.

Its a painless, non-invasive treatment that requires no advance preparation, anesthesia, or recovery time.

Treatments create magnetic energy pulses that are able to pass through your skull to stimulate brain cells. That stimulation is thought to improve communication between different regions of your brain, which in turn can improve function.

The magnetic pulses used in TMS are the same strength and type used to create MRI images. This technology has been in use for many years and is quickly gaining popularity amongmental health specialists.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation is FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression. AtBrandon TMS and Psychiatry, it is also used off-label to treat many other mental health conditions. Some of the applications currently approved in European countries include:

There is even evidence to support the use of TMS to treat autism spectrum disorders, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, Tourette syndrome, and more.

For traditional transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy atBrandon TMS and Psychiatry4, a series of 36 sessions of 20 minutes each is recommended.

That works out to daily visits for the first six weeks, then three treatments per week for the seventh week, two treatments per week for the eighth week, and one treatment during the ninth week.

During your visit, you relax comfortably in the MagVenture treatment chair. Your provider places a cotton cap over your skull that has marks as a guide for your exact treatment location.

The treatment coil is placed just next to your head. You may notice some clicking sounds or feel sensations of knocking, tingling or tapping on your head, but there is no pain associated with treatment sessions.

After your 20 minute session, you can return to your normal activities. There are no restrictions on your activity levels and no need for recovery.

If you have questions about transcranial magnetic stimulation or would like information about pricing, insurance coverage, or scheduling concerns, call Brandon TMS and Psychiatry orbook a visit onlineto learn more.

It's the IPO season. A bunch of listings like Zomato's have been stellar. And another group, including Paytm, Oyo and Policybazaar, is ready to hit the gong. For countries like India, it is pertinent to attract tech start-ups to list in India and Not go overseas. So, India is tightening the lever on policy. Markets regulator SEBI has eased the rules for issuance of shares with superior voting power - a long-time ask of the tech ecosystem. India is now on a par with start-up rules in the US and broader west. Is it enough to spur start-up IPOs? Or is it an incremental step?
