Nov. 4The lighthouse tender Manzanita was responsible for getting supplies to the various offshore lighthouses, like Tillamook Rock. Unfortunately, it abandoned a crew on 30-acre Destruction Island, 3.5 miles off the Washington coast, according to a survivor's tale in the Nov. 4, 1890, edition of The Daily Astorian.

Edward Richardson and 13 other men were dropped off by the Manzanita on the desolate island in early September to build the foundation for a lighthouse. They were left with some rations and a promise the Manzanita would return in 10 days.

But the tender didn't show up for two weeks, and only with "a small quantity of provisions." She was en route to Puget Sound "to attend on the naval commission." The captain was informed they would need more supplies within a week, but the Manzanita never returned. By week's end, the men were on half-rations and digging clams. Soon all they had to eat was clams, and some became sick.

Signal fires eventually caught local Native Americans' attention. They arrived in canoes, but there was only room for two of the stranded men to go ashore. Richardson was one of them; he intended to report the dire straits and neglect on Destruction Island to the authorities in Portland.

"On reaching the mainland," Richardson recalled, "we walked a long distance and finally reached Grays Harbor. This we crossed in a sailboat, and then began a foot journey arriving at North Cove (Washaway Beach, Washington) ... Here we caught the steamer for Sealand (Nahcotta, Washingon), and from thence came here by rail and the steamer General Canby."

The newspaper was outraged. "If the Manzanita is to be continued in the service of showing brass-buttoned and epauletted officers about Puget Sound, it might be well, for the sake of humanity, for the government to charter a steamer to supply the men with the necessaries of life, who lead isolated lives in the lighthouses."

Live Review: Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Usher Hall, Edinburgh – HeraldScotland

Posted: at 10:14 pm

THE dancing started early. Second song in and Andy McCluskey began to reel around the stage, pummelling his guitar when not pummelling his chest, throwing his arms up into contorted positions and generally owning his dad moves.

Theres a secret to that, he told a busy Usher Hall. Make sure your kids arent watching when you dance.

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark returned to Edinburgh for the first time in 30 years last night to play their 1981 album Architecture and Morality, perhaps the highpoint of their back catalogue.

Age has not wearied them. Confident enough to begin with an extended version of the epic album track Sealand, they presented a buffed-up, at times beefed-up, take on an album that is now 40 years old, before launching into a greatest hits package, fronted by McCluskeys potent voice and "distinctive" moves.

It made for a compelling spectacle. Accompanied by Stuart Kershaw on drums and Martin Cooper on keyboard and saxophone, original members McCluskey and Paul Humphreys added a professional sheen to the OMD default position of esoteric subject matter allied to leftfield pop hooks.

The result could be incongruous at times. Their hit Enola Gay, a song about the dropping of the atom bomb on Hiroshima after all, has now become a clap-along anthem. But in a way that sums up everything that was beguiling and baffling about OMD then and remains so now; the ambition for the work allied to the sugar-coated rush of their pop nous.

First time around that sugar-coating would get thicker and thicker as time went on and songs like Tesla Girls and Sailing on the Seven Seas always felt like naked assaults on the charts (though tonight the latter in particular was given an impressive refresh).

As a result, the night peaked early with the performances of the hits off Architecture and Morality (the sublime Souvenir, Joan of Arc and Maid of Orleans, prefaced by should-have-been-a-single Shes Leaving), the high watermark of the bands achievements, the moment when ambition and achievement seemed best balanced.

But in the end what you took away from the evening was the sight of two men in their sixties reliving their long-ago youth and looking like they were having the time of their lives doing so.

Cop 26: Areas of North Wales that could be under water within nine years – North Wales Live

Posted: at 10:14 pm

Alarming maps have revealed the parts of North Wales which could be underwater in less than 10 years.

Huge swathes of the regions coastline are threatened by rising sea levels and flooding as early as 2030.

The maps on this page are projections based on the current trajectory of climate change.

READ MORE: Northern Lights: Best time and how to see Aurora Borealis in the sky above UK

Even if this months COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow results in sweeping and immediate cuts to carbon emissions, several areas in North Wales will still be vulnerable to sea flooding.

They include Glaslyn estuary near Porthmadog, much of which was reclaimed from the sea by the towns Cob.

So too are coastal areas near Pwllheli and low-lying land around Shell Island, Gwynedd.

Without further climate mitigation, huge swathes of the North Wales coast could periodically find themselves under water within nine years.

Earlier this year, oceanographers at Bangor University warned rising sea levels could cut off the A55 and wash away the North Wales Coast railway by the end of this century.

Important economic infrastructure, such as Deeside Industrial Estate, and several Snowdonia holiday resorts could also be swamped.

Did you know we offer a free Love North Wales newsletter?

Whether you live in the region or just like to visit the area, our weekly newsletter will bring you inspiration for the best places to visit, eat, shop and have fun in North Wales.

However Climate Central, a non-profit news organisation focused on climate science, now claims the risk of flooding could be three times higher than previously forecast.

It has used advanced models of coastal elevations, and peer-reviewed projections for future flood levels, to map areas forecasted to be most vulnerable to coastal flooding and storm surges.

While Climate Central warn there is always some error, the maps should be regarded as screening tools to identify places that may require deeper investigation of risk.

Its maps are not a prediction of areas that will be swallowed by the sea: instead, they indicate those at greatest risk.

2030 maps, for predicted sea levels and annual storm surges, show much of the Wirral peninsula under threat.

At greatest risk is land on the Wales side of the border, including Sealand, Garden City and Deeside industrial park.

Much of the area is on flat land reclaimed from the head of the Dee estuary, which by the 18th century had become heavily silted-up.

Also at risk, further along the estuary, is Sealand industrial estate, Broughton shopping park and parts of Chester, once a major port for the Romans.

Queensferry, Shotton and parts of Connahs Quay fall within the danger zone too.

In fact, a strip of coast running all the way to Talacre is coloured red, indicating sea incursion at least once a year.

Other infrastructure under threat includes the North Wales Coast railway and the A494, a major transport conduit in and out of Wales.

This is a stretch of coastline that is already defended, with current and future plans to increase its resilience to flooding.

One flaw of the Climate Central maps is the absence of non-US data for existing or planned sea walls.

The result is an amplified projection of future flooding. This confirms what we already know that low-lying places like Talacre, Prestatyn, Rhyl, Towyn, Kinmel Bay and Pensarn are extremely vulnerable to future flooding without sea defences.

So too is the North Wales Coast railway.

At greatest threat is land west of the River Clwyd. At Pensarn and beyond, Climate Central expects annual flooding to be affecting the A55 within nine years.

Ever since marshlands fronting Llandudno Bay were redeveloped as a holiday resort, in the 19th century, the potential for flooding has always been an issue.

Latest plans include new timber groynes to stop beach erosion.

Its one of several flood defence schemes in various states of progress in Conwy county: others include a 300ft breakwater in Penrhyn Bay, a raised beach and one-way prom at Rhos-on-Sea and a phased approach in Colwyn Bay as funding becomes available.

Along the estuary, reclaimed farmland in the Conwy Valley is already used as flood over-spills. By 2030, Climate Central expects this to become an annual occurrence, with the swollen waters affecting parts of Llanrwst.

The A55 and coastal railway face more threats from the sea as they travel along the north Gwynedd coast.

Malltraeth Marsh, stretching from Angleseys western coast beyond Llangristiolus and the A55, was reclaimed from estuarine marshland in the early 19th century.

After the construction of Malltraeth Cob, Afon Cefni was canalised in 1824 and it became possible to grow crops on the land.

The system required constant maintenance, and by the Second World War it had fallen into disrepair, devastating post-war harvests.

Although the areas network of embankments was subsequently improved, local farmers are again witnessing ever more frequent incursions.

By 2030, Climate Central predicts the entire marsh will be at risk of annual inundation.

Low-lying land east of the marsh is not under immediate threat.

However longer-term projections, based on runaway climate change, suggest the entire island could be cut in two.

This wide flat valley of Traeth Mawr was once the Glaslyn estuary before the Porthmadog Cob was built.

Effectively, this sealed off the estuarys mouth, enabling the land to be reclaimed for farming.

As sea levels rise, this land is under threat of abandonment. Already, some local farmers complain that one-in-100-year floods have become a regular occurrence.

Low-lying land towards Harlech and down to Llanbedr, is also coloured red in Climate Centrals 2030 maps, indicating annual flooding within nine years.

Further south, beyond Barmouth, lies Fairbourne, one of the cause clbres of the climate debate.

Originally salt marshes, its defended by a sea wall that is becoming unsustainable to maintain, given predicted sea level rises.

Fairbourne is expected to be abandoned between 2052 and 2062 or possibly as early as 2042 if the seas rise faster than the 0.5 metres predicted.

The estuary has extensive salt marshes with a network of mudflats and river channels.

As such it has been designated a Special Protection Area for wild birds, with large numbers attracted to its feeding grounds.

On its western flank, RSPB Cymru runs the Ynys-hir reserve.

Much of this, and the sand dunes of Ynyslas, could find itself under water at least once a year by 2030, according to Climate Centrals projections.

This inundation could continue along the estuary as far as Machynlleth.

Also identified as being at risk is the resort of Tywyn, its vulnerable flat land continuing inland beyond Bryncrug and Llanegryn.

Zealand – Wikipedia

Posted: November 1, 2021 at 6:55 am

Most populous island of Denmark

Zealand or Sealand (Danish: Sjlland [ln], in English also occasionally), at 7,031km2, is the largest and most populous island in Denmark proper (thus excluding Greenland and Disko Island, which are larger in size). Zealand has a population of 2,319,705 (as of 1 January 2020).[2]

It is the 13th-largest island in Europe by area and the 4th most populous. It is connected to Sprog and Funen by the Great Belt Fixed Link and to Amager by several bridges in Copenhagen. Indirectly, through the island of Amager and the resund Bridge, it is also linked to Scania in Sweden. In the south, the Storstrm Bridge and the Far Bridges connect it to Falster, and beyond that island to Lolland, from where the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel to Germany is planned.

Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, with a population between 1.3 and 1.4million people in 2020, is located mostly on the eastern shore of Zealand and partly on the island of Amager. Other cities on Zealand include Roskilde, Hillerd, Nstved, Helsingr, Slagelse, Kge, Holbk and Kalundborg.

Administratively, Zealand is divided between two Danish regions: The Copenhagen metropolitan area and North Zealand belong to the Capital Region, while the major and more rural part of the island belongs to the Zealand Region.

The origin of the Danish name Sjlland is not exactly known. Sjl in modern Danish means "soul", but this interpretation can be excluded.[how?] A derivation from si/s (meaning "lake" or "sea") has been assumed. However, today a common hypothesis is that the Old Danish form Siland is based on the word *selha- with the ending *wundia-. The latter means "indicates, resembles". The word *selha- may have two different meanings: "seal" (in modern Danish sl) or "deep bay, fjord". Since Roskilde is a major and ancient settlement on Zealand, accessible by sea through the narrow Roskilde Fjord (branched from the Isefjord), it has been assumed that the sailors named the island after this.[3]

The English form may be borrowed from the German form Seeland. These forms might be based on the assumption that the first part means sea or lake (German See), or they could simply be based on an alternative Danish form of the name, Slland, which was common until the 19th century.[4]

Unlike the Danish island, the Pacific nation of New Zealand is named after the Dutch province of Zeeland.

In Norse mythology as told in the Gylfaginning, the island was created by the goddess Gefjun after she tricked Gylfi, the king of Sweden. She removed a piece of land and transported it to Denmark, which became Zealand. The vacant area was filled with water and became Mlaren.[5] However, since modern maps show a similarity between Zealand and the Swedish lake Vnern, it is sometimes identified as the hole left by Gefjun. Gefjun is queen of King Skjldr, eponymous ancestor of the Scyldings, related to the etymological debate.

Zealand is the most populous Danish island. It is irregularly shaped, and is north of the islands of Lolland, Falster, and Mn. The small island of Amager lies immediately east.

Copenhagen is mostly on Zealand but extends across northern Amager. A number of bridges and the Copenhagen Metro connect Zealand to Amager, which is connected to Scania in Sweden by the resund Bridge via the artificial island of Peberholm. Zealand is joined in the west to Funen, by the Great Belt Fixed Link, and Funen is connected by bridges to the country's mainland, Jutland.

On 5 June 2007 the regional subsidiary of national broadcaster DR reported that Kobanke in the southeast near the town Rnnede in Faxe Municipality, with a height of 122.9 metres (403ft), was the highest natural point on Zealand. Gyldenlveshj, south of the city Roskilde, has a height of 126 metres (413ft), but that is due to a man-made hill from the 17th century and its highest natural point is only 121.3 metres (398ft).

Zealand gives its name to the Selandian era of the Paleocene.

Duke Energy offers tips to help customers to prepare their homes for approaching seasonal cold weather – User-generated content

Posted: at 6:24 am

With seasonal cold weather on the horizon and an increase in the cost of energy across the globe, Duke Energy is reminding customers of available tips, tools and assistance programs to help them prepare for higher winter bills.

Sealing drafty openings is one important step to lowering energy costs (Photo form Creative Commons)

We recognize we still are in challenging economic times, and approaching cold weather and higher energy prices could create additional hardships on our customers, said Amy Spiller, president, Duke Energy Ohio and Kentucky. The increase in fuel prices is set by the market and passed through to customers with no markup. We know affordability is important to our customers, and we want to highlight steps we can all take now to reduce energy usage and better manage bills.

Low to no-cost energy-saving tips and projects

Natural gas use typically spikes in the winter as customers combat low temperatures to stay warm. Electric customers are affected by the increased cost of natural gas to fuel power plants. Below are tips to help customers prepare for cold weather and manage energy use.

Learn how to reduce energy use. The first step to reduce energy use in your home is to identify and prioritize energy-saving improvements. This can be accomplished through a certified auditor or by performing your own energy audit.

Seal air ducts. Make sure the air ducts from your homes furnace and central air conditioner are properly sealed. Ducts that leak into the attic or crawl space can substantially increase your heating and cooling bills.

Seal your home. One of the quickest energy-saving tasks you can do is caulk, seal and weatherstrip all seams, cracks, and openings to the outside. This can save 10% to 20% on your heating and cooling bills.

Programmable Thermostats are another low-cost way to conserve energy (Photo from Creative Commons)

Install smart thermostats. Install a smart or programmable thermostat to reduce your energy use while you are asleep or away.

Manage water heating. Set your water heater temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit or consider installing an on-demand or tankless water heater that only heats water when you need it.

Consider insulation. Consider whether you need to add insulation to your ceiling, floors, and walls. Insulation between the indoors and outdoors reduces energy demand, saving you money while improving the comfort of your home.

Operate ceiling fans in a clockwise direction, which pushes warm air back down into the room.

Change air filters regularly; a dirty air filter makes a heating system work harder, which uses more energy.

Have HVAC systems checked regularly by a qualified heating and air conditioning contractor to maintain efficiency and peak performance.

Leave drapes or blinds open during sunny winter days to allow the sun to warm the house. Close them at night to help insulate your home.

Check out these easy tutorials on how to install weather stripping on doors and windows, or how to caulk around doors and windows.

Sen. Ben Sasse talks challenges of the ‘digital revolution’ in ethics forum at Coast Guard Academy – Stars and Stripes

Posted: at 2:28 pm

Sign for U.S. Coast Guard Academy facing Route 1 . (David M. Santos/U.S. Coast Guard)

NEWLONDON, Conn. (Tribune News Service) Sen.Ben Sasse, R-Neb., presentedCoast Guard Academycadets on Friday with five theses about the current digital revolution: It creates constant echo chambers, gives unprecedented permission to view ourselves as victims, is eliminating lifelong work in the same job, is transforming the nature of war, and makes it possible for theU.S.dollar to no longer be the worlds reserve currency.

Addressing a group of people largely born between 2000 and 2003, he said social media posts are not representative of regular people who have relationships with their neighbors and talked about the negative impact of Instagram on teenage girls.

Sasse who said his top priorities in theSenateare the future of war, the future of work, and the First Amendment gave the Class of 48 Leadership Lecture at the 32ndU.S.Coast Guard Academy Admiral Thomas Wetmore AnnualEthics Forum.

The forum grew out of a 1988 meeting in which the Class of 1948 expressed concern about declining ethical standards in government, due to the Watergate and Iran-Contra scandals.

Sasse was one of seven Republican senators who voted onFeb. 13to convictDonald Trumpin the former presidents second impeachment trial, a month after calling theJan. 6violence at theU.S. Capitolthe inevitable and ugly outcome of the Presidents addiction to constantly stoking division.

TheNebraskasenator, who holds a Ph.D. in American history, said humans always believe the moment in which theyre living is an inflection point because were narcissists, but he thinks now is one of those rare times where were actually living through mass disruption.

Our politics are mostly being taken over by two tiny, tiny, tiny cults who are addicted to power, Sasse said, adding, Politics shouldnt be sexy and interesting. Politics should actually be pretty mundane.

He saidMSNBCandFox Newsprogramming is about the simplistic view that politics is at the center of everything.

If you make a list of your 10 to 50 identities, if you put politics at the top, theres probably something wrong with your soul, said Sasse, who named dad and Nebraskafootball addict among his top identities. While he believes Democratic policies are hurting the economy, he said that fight cant be issue two or issue four in his worldview.

Sasse also said most wars in the future will be cyber whereas past wars have been about blowing physical stuff up, and said were a few years away from a moment when 1,000 drones could incapacitate an entire aircraft carrier.

In a question-and-answer session, cadets asked Sasse, 49, about coronavirus vaccine mandates, how they can expect change given the age of legislators, suicide and advice for bringing people together.

Sasse said he is zealously pro-these vaccines, calling thePfizerandModernavaccines unbelievable scientific achievements. But he said he is against theOSHAworkplace mandate because he thinks its unconstitutional, and he thinks mandates are going to cause more problems than theyre actually going to get us public health benefits.

He left cadets with the advice to believe in the humanity of every individual you lead and every person you serve alongside and said, We need lots more breaking bread together and a lot less angry tweet responses to everything.

Jon Heller, director of theLoy Institute for Leadershipat theCoast Guard Academy, said Sasse has written several letters of support for cadet applicants fromNebraska, and Superintendent Rear Adm.William Kellyinvited him to come. Heller also said they were inspired by the comments he made onJan. 6.

Heller said Kelly, faculty and cadets have dialogues about contemporary ethical challenges to decide on themes and speakers for the forum, and the academy tries to bring in people from a variety of professions.

The opening keynote address Thursday evening came fromMike Petters, president and CEO ofHuntington Ingalls Industries. Sessions on Friday included a senior enlisted leadership panel and a junior officer panel.

The agenda reflected the way ethical questions in military leadership have evolved over the past 32 years: One panel was titled Being True to Yourself: Ethical Challenges Faced by Coast Guard LGBTQ Members Ten Years After the Repeal of Dont Ask/Dont Tell.

One of the panelists wasCaliforniaattorneyBronwen Tomb, a former cadet who was disenrolled from the academy in 2006 under the dont ask, dont tell policy. Another was Lt.Kelli Normoyle, Class of 2012, who founded the LGBTQ affinity group Coast Guard Spectrum.
