Electronic synth-pop pioneers pt1: OMD at the Brighton Centre – Brighton and Hove News

OMD + SCRITTI POLITTI BRIGHTON CENTRE 16.11.21

OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark) pulled into the Brighton Centre tonight on date 12 of 15 on their UK arena tour, which saw the band perform songs from their iconic 1981 album Architecture & Morality, plus many more hits from their legendary back catalogue.

Andy McCluskey from OMD live at the Brighton Centre 16.11.21 (pic Andy Sturmey) (click pic to enlarge)

The band were formed in 1978 by teenage friends Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys. They quickly became electro-pioneers with a string of hit albums released throughout the 1980s, eventually selling over 25 million singles and 15 million albums across their career to date, establishing them as electronic synthesiser pioneers and one of Britains best-loved pop groups.

Tonight, the band who were all clad in black, were unquestionably still at the very top of their game. I first witnessed them performing live 15,383 days ago (42 years, 1 month, and 11 days) when they played the Brighton Dome as support to Gary Numan. I always remember that concert as some luddite in the balcony shouting We want live music! in reference to their TEAC 4-track tape-recorder christened Winston which was named after the antihero of George Orwells novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. It was a big worry at the time that machines would take musicians jobs, but as we now can see, they help the artists!

Martin Cooper from OMD live at the Brighton Centre 16.11.21 (pic Andy Sturmey) (click pic to enlarge)

OMD took to the Brighton Centre stage at 8:46pm and performed an impressive 98 minute set to a relatively large crowd. The venue hadnt sold out, but they most certainly would have burst Brighton Domes capacity, so clearly the band are on the up again!

Stuart Kershaw from OMD live at the Brighton Centre 16.11.21 (pic Andy Sturmey) (click pic to enlarge)

These days the band are a live quartet that feature Andy McCluskey, Paul Humphreys, Martin Cooper and Stuart Kershaw. Tonight, McCluskey was out front, with the trio behind him on three separate podiums with Humphreys (stage left, our right), drummer Kershaw (central) and keyboardist and occasional saxophone player Cooper (stage right, our left). The lighting was truly excellent as is the overall sound which is very crisp indeed.

OMDlive at the Brighton Centre 16.11.21 (pic Andy Sturmey) (click pic to enlarge)

They began their 23 song set with the nine tunes found on their famed Architecture & Morality album from 1981. The obvious opener being the unusual but gripping title track before moving onto Sealand with its terrific drum sound that hit us right in the chests. Things were ramped up with the arrival of the all encompassing New Stone Age and then right bang in the middle of the electropop world with their tune Georgia.

Andy McCluskey from OMD live at the Brighton Centre 16.11.21 (pic Andy Sturmey) (click pic to enlarge)

McCluskey informed us that the next number, Shes Leaving, should have been the fourth single lifted from the Architecture & Morality album, but he put the mockers on it. I suspect that he may have felt that the already released three international hit singles (Souvenir, Joan Of Arc and Maid Of Orleans) which together sold eight million copies, may have been enough. This evenings delivery of Shes Leaving was probably the best I have ever heard it performed live and the hairs on my arms stood erect in appreciation.

Paul Humphreys from OMD live at the Brighton Centre 16.11.21 (pic Andy Sturmey) (click pic to enlarge)

The aforementioned previous three singles followed in release date order Souvenir with Humphreys on vocals, Joan Of Arc (with the audience on handclaps) and arguably best received Joan Of Arc (Maid Of Orleans) with great back screen graphics, Kershaws impressive drumming and McCluskey on Ian Curtis style dancing.

For the final number of the Architecture & Morality album, the atmospheric The Beginning And The End, the quartet were stationed at the front of the stage in a line and were bathed in blue light which gave the effect that the keyboards at either side were floating in thin air.

Andy McCluskey from OMD live at the Brighton Centre 16.11.21 (pic Andy Sturmey) (click pic to enlarge)

Song ten tonight Atomic Ranch was a brief link track on tape which can be found on their excellent 2013 English Electric album. This flowed into the 1980 standalone single Messages. This tune too made the hairs on my arms stand on end. Its a timeless tune! There were handclaps aplenty on Tesla Girls as McCluskey bounced around on stage like the Skids Richard Jobson does. History Of Modern (Part 1) got an airing and thus McCluskey ensured that the standing fans jumped up and down in a slow pogo fashion. After the tune finished, he bent down and retrieved a bra from the stage. He stated If its not a double F, then its not my size!.

Andy McCluskey from OMD live at the Brighton Centre 16.11.21 (pic Andy Sturmey) (click pic to enlarge)

Humphreys again took over lead vocals for (Forever) Live And Die. This was followed by their newest tune of the night, the Dont Go single from 2019. So In Love came next, which saw Cooper take on saxophone duty. Locomotion came and went and a couple from the 1991 Sugar Tax album followed, namely Pandoras Box and Sailing On The Seven Seas.

Paul Humphreys from OMD live at the Brighton Centre 16.11.21 (pic Andy Sturmey) (click pic to enlarge)

Arguably their most famous tune, Enola Gay, was performed as the last main set number. There were three encore tracks If You Leave (from 1986 Pretty In Pink (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) which I found the least successful tune of the night; the seminal 1979 single Electricity, which as always was rather good, and finally the deep synth sounding The Romance Of The Telescope arrived, which McCluskey informed us that they were ending with this tune as thats what they ended the original Architecture & Morality tour with back in the early 1980s.

OMD live at the Brighton Centre 16.11.21 (pic Andy Sturmey) (click pic to enlarge)

Clearly the band were overjoyed with the Brighton crowds response to their very polished set and McCluskey informed us that they would return. For now, they vacated the stage at 10:24pm. Tonight was a very enjoyable concert and I would urge all synthpop fans to attend an OMD concert. The band have since posted this message on social media: How fabulous to be back by the seaside in Brighton. Seemed like the Bexhill bouncing crowd were abundant. Thank you all!

Scritti Politti live at the Brighton Centre 16.11.21 (pic Andy Sturmey) (click pic to enlarge)

Support this evening came from Scritti Politti who took to the stage at 7:30pm for a 10 track 47 minute set.

After a false start, the 4 piece were off with The Sweetest Girl, which founding member Green Gartside informed us that he recorded with Robert Wyatt he was on keyboards on this breakthrough single.

Scritti Politti live at the Brighton Centre 16.11.21 (pic Andy Sturmey) (click pic to enlarge)

This was as far as I can recall my second encounter with the band, having previously seen an early post-punk incarnation at I believe the Top Rank Suite. My memories are a little sketchy with this, but I think they were on the same bill as the 7-piece Thompson Twins and Scrittis drummer fell off the stage. Maybe someone can help jog my memory here?

I have pleasure in stating that Green Gartsides distinctive vocals are today just as good as they ever were and that they perfectly filled the arena, which sadly at the time was a little sparse Support act syndrome! Whereby people cant get there in time from work, or are instead at the bar, or worst of all, not bothering to see the support bands.

Scritti Politti live at the Brighton Centre 16.11.21 (pic Andy Sturmey) (click pic to enlarge)

The rather funky Small Talk was up next and that was followed by the chugging reggae beat of The Word Girl, which could have easily been a hit by UB40 back in the day.

Song four was Trentavious White, which as Gartside stated was recorded as a tribute to the rapper of the same name who was murdered in the studio in 2016. He was better known by his stage name Bankroll Fresh or Yung Fresh.

Scritti Politti live at the Brighton Centre 16.11.21 (pic Andy Sturmey) (click pic to enlarge)

Next up was Oh Patti (Dont Feel Sorry For Loverboy) which was written as a message to Gartsides first ever girlfriend the boy dun good! The typically mid 1980s sounding track Hypnotize was played to us next. The Boom Boom Bap followed and was penned about his love of hip hop music. It was then the turn of Perfect Way, which had more than a little whiff of Phil Collins Sussudio about it.

The quartets final two numbers were seriously funky affairs. Both Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin) and Absolute would have sat superbly within any Prince album. They left the stage at 8:17pm to the respected applause that they deserved.

Queen Elizabeth II Is the Monarch of Sixteen Countries. What Does That Mean? – Council on Foreign Relations

Posted: at 12:45 pm

Queen Elizabeth II is the longest-serving British monarch in history, having ascended to the throne in 1952 at age twenty-five. She is also the queen of more than a dozen other independent countries that were once under direct British colonial rule. In 2021, Barbados will become the latest country to sever its ties with the Crown. Will others follow suit?

More From Our Experts

Queen Elizabeth is not only the monarch of the United Kingdom (UK), but also of fifteen other countries, including Canada and others across the Asia-Pacific and the Caribbean. These are known as the Commonwealth realms. They are distinct from the Commonwealth of Nations, a loose grouping of fifty-four countries that were once part of the British Empire but most which are not still subjects of the queen.

Jamaica

Together, there are some 150 million people in the Commonwealth realms, the most populous of which are the UK, Canada, Australia, Papua New Guinea, and New Zealand.

These countries are all independent and sovereign states. Still, the role of the queen is in many places a subject of controversy, since many gained their independence through uprisings against British colonial rule.

Commonwealth realms are constitutional monarchies, meaning the monarchs powers are largely symbolic and political decisions are made by an elected parliament and implemented by prime ministers. The queen is thus head of state but not head of governmentmeaning she is not involved in day-to-day governing. (In the United States, by contrast, the president is both head of state and head of government.)

More From Our Experts

The queen does have some constitutional duties, the most significant being the approval of new governments. Depending on the country, she may formally approve legislation, appoint certain officials, or grant state honors. In non-UK realms, the queen appoints a royal representative to carry out these duties. This figure is known as a governor-general.

In exceptional circumstances, the Crown also has what are known as reserve powers, or the authority to unilaterally override other branches of government. This has happened rarely since World War II, the most notable example being Australias 1975 constitutional crisis, in which the governor-general dismissed a sitting prime minister.

Most fundamentally, the purpose of the queen is to serve as a nonpartisan symbol of the nation, constitutional continuity, and moral authorityofficial documents are often marked with the royal seal and the queens visage featured on local currency. Her many trips to the Commonwealth realms have helped kindle an affection and loyalty even in countries where the republican movement is strong, such as Jamaica. The royal family has long been a source of British soft power and diplomatic influence, though that has been undermined in some realms due to accusations by Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle of racism within the family.

The World This Week

A weekly digest of the latestfrom CFR on the biggest foreign policy stories of the week, featuring briefs, opinions, and explainers. Every Friday.

Nearly twenty former British territories renounced their monarchies and became republics after World War II, including India, Nigeria, and Pakistan. This has generally meant replacing the queen with another head-of-state figure, often a president whose role is also largely ceremonial. For countries that saw their monarchies as unwelcome remnants of colonialism, this was the final step in distancing themselves from its last vestiges.

The 1970s saw the last major wave of departures, with Caribbean countries Dominica, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago. Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean, was the latest to leave, in 1992. Now, Barbados is on the cusp of doing so: the country will officially leave the monarchy behind and swear in a president on November 30, 2021.

Barbadian leaders frame the move as a long-awaited culmination of independence: The time has come to fully leave our colonial past behind, said Governor-General Sandra Mason in announcing the exit. The date was set to coincide with the fifty-fifth anniversary of Barbadoss independence from the UK.

Barbadoss decision has added to recent movements in some other countries, especially in the Caribbean, to reconsider their ties to the queen.

Part of the Black Lives Matter movement that swept the world in 2020, protests in the UK have often focused on the repercussions of slavery in Britains Caribbean colonies and the role it played in the empires wealth and global power. Some British companies involved in the slave trade have promised to make amends, but Barbados and the other members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have pressed European governments for full reparations. Jamaica, where the movement to break with the monarchy has been gaining steam, has directly petitioned Queen Elizabeth for reparations for the Crowns role in the transatlantic slave trade.

Analysts differ on the likelihood that other countries will reject the Crown. Kings Colleges Richard Drayton, a historian, has argued that Barbados could be a tipping point in that regard. Yet, Aaron Kamugisha of Barbadoss University of the West Indies says the impact is likely to be limited, especially given that some countries have stricter requirements for the change.

In Canada, for instance, it would require a constitutional reform, meaning the unanimous assent of the ten provinces as well as parliament. Canadian support for republicanism remains below a majority, but it has grown sharply in the last year. And yet another factor in Canada and elsewhere is the popularity of Queen Elizabeth. Experts say that she commands a level of respect not yet earned by much of the rest of the royal family, creating unpredictability for her successor.

Confession can be place where church fights abuse, Jesuit says – National Catholic Reporter

Posted: at 12:45 pm

Vatican City To protect the sacrament of reconciliation as a "channel of grace" for victims of sexual abuse, the Catholic Church must do a better job instructing priests on what to do if a victim recounts his or her abuse in the confessional and in the unlikely case that an abuser confesses, said Jesuit Father HansZollner.

"If the church did more to help confessors be empathetic listeners as well as skilled interpreters of the church's moral teaching, it would make it clearer that the sacrament of reconciliation can be an instrument in the fight against abuse," FatherZollnerwrote Nov. 11 in The Tablet, the London-based Catholic journal.

"If the church is not able to better explain why it does not protect abusers or other serious criminals from justice and why thesealcan help safeguard children and vulnerable adults state legislators may come to target the inviolability of thesealofconfession," he wrote.

The Jesuit has been a member of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors since its creation and is president of the Institute of Anthropology: Interdisciplinary Studies on Human Dignity and Care at Rome's Pontifical Gregorian University.

FatherZollner's article was occasioned by debate in France after the release in October of a report by an independent commission estimated more than 330,000 children had been abused by church personnel since the 1950s.

The report "provoked the question that had been raised after the publication of similar reports in Australia, Ireland, the United States and elsewhere: Should it be mandatory for a priest who hears about sexual abuse committed against a minor inconfessionto report it to the secular authorities?"

However, he wrote, there is no "compelling evidence showing that abuse would be prevented by removing theseal" of the confessional.

The Code of Canon Law absolutely forbids a priest from revealing anything he has learned in the confessional for any reason. As FatherZollnerwrote, "A priest cannot break thesealto save his own life, to protect his good name, to save the life of another or to aid the course of justice. Priests who violate thesealofconfessionare automatically excommunicated."

While the church's poor record of preventing abuse and handling allegations has created suspicion about its vigorous protection of the secrecy of the confessional, the Jesuit said that secrecy makes "people feel free to say things inconfessionthey wouldn't say anywhere else."

Historically and still today, he said, that "safe space" is used much more often by survivors and victims than by abusers.

"With the exception of prison chaplains, priests are highly unlikely to ever hear aconfessionfrom a perpetrator of sexual abuse of children. Just one priest has told me that he had heard theconfessionof a perpetrator and that was on just one occasion," he wrote.

But, he said, "a victim of clerical sexual abuse as an adult made the sometimes-neglected point to me that many victims feel guilty and find it extremely difficult to speak for the first time about the unspeakable. She worries that if you cannot be absolutely sure that what you say inconfessionwill remain confidential, one of the few safe places where starting to talk about an experience of abuse is possible may be lost."

To assist victims, protect the sacramentalsealand promote justice, FatherZollnersaid, the Catholic Church should issue a new instruction for priests who hear confessions, spelling out things they need to know specifically regarding cases of abuse or suspected abuse.

First, he said, it would "reiterate obligations to respect the laws for reporting abuse outside of the confessional and it would also reaffirm theseal. It would emphasize the personal responsibility of the confessor," including "the requirement to call on a perpetrator to stop the abuse, to report themselves to the statutory authorities, and to seek therapeutic help."

The instruction would make clear that "absolution for the sin of abuse cannot be given unless not only has sincere contrition been shown but the willingness to make up for the harm done has been demonstrated."

"The instruction would also make clear that in the case of a victim speaking about being abused, the confessor must listen with empathy and respect," he said. "The priest could then offer to meet the person alleging abuse outside the confessional space and encourage him or her to contact therapists and lawyers. Adequate accompaniment must be provided, given that many victims who speak about abuse for the first time feel uneasy about talking again about what had happened, particularly if it might open the area of legal proceedings."

"Thesealofconfessioncreates a sacred space in which a penitent is completely free to put before God whatever is on their conscience, and when they show contrition find forgiveness, reconciliation and healing," he said. "That thesealhas in the past been a pretext for abuse and other crimes should not lead to what is a channel of grace being discarded."

The Army Plans to Expand Project Convergence – The National Interest

Posted: at 11:24 pm

The Army has completed an extensive series of warfare experiments in Arizona intended to create next-level combatdecisionmakingby sharing targeting and information across the military services.

The Army recently completed its second Project Convergence exercise at Yuma Proving Grounds in Yuma Arizona. In this year's Project Convergence, the Army aimed to greatly expand its networking capabilities to include Air Force and Navy nodes across a joint combat network.Army systemssuch as Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS) are specifically geared toward connecting, pooling and analyzing threat data from land and airto quickly establish a target track on an approaching threat and cue the best interceptor.

If theres an incoming missile attack, first we want our systems to be able to identify it, Army Chief of Staff Gen. James McConville said in an Army press statement.

Prior to Project Convergence 21, the Army-led IBCS program successfully linked sensor data from an Air Force F-35 jet with ground-basedradar systems networkedinto a meshed system of interconnected sensors. It seems likely that expanded Project Convergence 21 air-ground connectivity might have hit new levels during the experiment.

Last years Project Convergence showed that fifth-generation aircraft F-35 fighter jets flying in the sky were able to exchange time-sensitive combat data with maneuvering soldiers on the ground. This kind of joint connectivity and high-speed sensor to shooter pairing represents the Army contribution to the Defense Departments Joint All Domain Command and Control program. The program essentially mirrors or aligns with what the Army is doing with Project Convergence but on a wider scale. It is centered upon thegoal of formingan interconnected meshed network of air, sea, land, cyber and space nodes able to share data across the military services in real-time.

Looking ahead at Project Convergence 22, McConville said the Army plans to expand the exercise to include U.S. allies and partners.

An unrecognizable Crescent Elk Auditorium will open its doors Friday for the first time in over a year.

The reopening ceremony for the 92-year-old venue will feature performances from the Del Norte High School jazz band, its dance troupe and from Jacob Scesney, a multi-instrumentalist who performs with Postmodern Jukebox, said Nick Rail.

The event will be held at 7 p.m. Friday. It will also be livestreamed in Crescent Elk Middle School's multipurpose room.

Rail, and his wife, Lisa, were part of a huge effort to restore the auditorium, donating the funding for new seats and a new stage lighting system.

Speaking in front of the Del Norte County Unified School District Board of Trustees on Oct. 28, Rail said the auditorium is unrecognizable.

The ceiling looks different, the walls look different, the seats are just amazing, the stage looks different, the lighting looks different, he said. You have to look pretty darn close to find something you recognize.

According to Marshall Jones, Del Norte Teachers Association president and Smith River School teacher, since seating may be limited, its possible the ceremony will be streamed in the schools multi-purpose room.

Itll be one of the major events for this year, so Im looking forward to that, he said.

As for the special guest performer, Rail said he has known Scesney since he was 12 years old. Scesney began taking music lessons at about 3 or 4 years old, according to IMDB. He has also performed with Casey Abrams, Seth McFarlane, Rachel Platten, Seal and the Black Eyed Peas.

The refurbished Crescent Elk Auditorium features new stage lights, seats, stage floor and flooring in the audience seating area. The number of seats was reduced from 495 to 385, but theyre 17 inches wide instead of the previous 11 inches, according to Rail.

They also include a folding desk enabling a spectator to take notes, eat or have a place to fold their hands.

On Oct. 28, DNUSD Superintendent Jeff Harris said when the district set out to refurbish the Crescent Elk Auditorium, they thought it would take five years, not 18 months.

This all started in 2020 when he said, Lets do something, Harris said of Rail. We were talking about a five year plan. Here we are, and its done.

According to Harris, the lights were refurbished, the electrical system was rewired. He said DNUSD has the ability to livestream performances from three different perspectives in the auditorium.

The auditorium itself is so big, one of the wires that runs from the front of the auditorium to the back of the auditorium that plugs into the sound system, on its own, is now picking up AM talk radio, Harris said.

He told trustees that the wire would be removed by the reopening ceremony.

Nick Rail grew up in Del Norte County and was introduced to music when he was a student at Redwood Union School. He grew up to found one of the largest musical instrument retailer in Southern California.

Rail reconnected with DNHS music director Dan Sedgwick, who grew up taking lessons at his Santa Barbara store.

In January 2020, the Rails donated 100 new musical instruments to DNUSD and founded the Nick and Lisa Rail Music Fund at the Wild Rivers Community Foundation. Their goal is to raise enough funding to build a performing arts center at Del Norte High.

In August, Rail introduced the nonprofit Partnership for the Performing Arts to the DNUSD Board.

On Oct. 28, Rail said the nonprofit hopes to have the performing arts center at Del Norte High school built by August 2027.

Rail said he and his wife are also getting ready to donate 175 more musical instruments to DNUSD in December.

Thatll bring our instrument donations up to about 250-275, he said. Our eventual plans are to donate close to 800.

What happened to Kim Crumbo? – Salt Lake Tribune

Posted: at 11:24 pm

Editors note This story is available to Salt Lake Tribune subscribers only. Thank you for supporting local journalism.

When Becky Crumbo first saw Shoshone Lake, she couldnt fathom how a storm strong enough to endanger the lives of two experienced outdoorsmen could have blown in so suddenly.

The cold water was like glass, she said.

But in a boat on that remote lake in Yellowstone National Park, with members of her family and the National Park Service, she understood.

In what felt like only minutes, the tranquil water was starting to get scary, she said. In that moment, she knew what must have happened to her missing husband, Kim Crumbo, and his brother Mark Crumbo ONeill, who was found dead on the shore.

It was a perfect storm, she said.

When Crumbo first went missing, the 74-year-old Ogden mans friends and colleagues took to social media to express their disbelief that such a legend, as many described him, could have disappeared in the wilderness. As a Vietnam War veteran, former Navy SEAL, experienced river runner and retired park ranger, he knew how to handle himself in wild places. Like his friend Edward Abbey, the author and environmentalist, Crumbo knew the land, they said.

Dad was the SEAL and everything that came with that cranking out horizontal push-ups off a yield sign after a six-pack of beer, and the like, Daniel Crumbo, one of Kim Crumbos two sons, said.

If I was in a pinch in a wild place ... and I had one person to call upon, it would be Kim Crumbo, said John Davis, head of the conservation organization that Crumbo had been working for when he went missing.

Since her husbands disappearance, Becky Crumbo has gotten several messages and phone calls from people who knew him well, convinced that something sinister happened to him, she said. But his wife of 48 years doesnt believe that. It was a fluke thing, and it was an act of nature, she said.

And yeah, they both survived a whole lot of things in their life, she continued. But they didnt survive this one.

After becoming a public figure in the conservation world and appearing in some of Abbeys writings, Kim Crumbo would eventually achieve minor celebrity status, his son said.

But both Kim Crumbo and Mark Crumbo ONeill were extraordinary and equally remarkable men, Daniel Crumbo said.

An undated newspaper clipping from The San Diego Union (now The San Diego Union-Tribune) features a photo of Kim Crumbo taken just after he and the rest of SEAL Team One were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation from President Richard Nixon for extraordinary heroism in Vietnam.

(Archival article from The San Diego Union) In this undated clipping and photo, Kim Crumbo receives the Presidential Unit Citation and a Bronze Star for his military service in Vietnam.

In addition to the presidential award, Crumbo also received the Bronze Star that day for personal acts of heroism. He was photographed standing with his mother, Patricia Elliott.

Daniel Crumbo described his uncle ONeill as a second father, who was the tall, lean, incredibly good-looking and charming younger brother that always had to outdo whoever did anything before him did and did.

Kim Crumbo and ONeill had both worked as professional river guides. Crumbo was the first full-time employee of Dee Holladay, founder of Holiday River Expeditions, and he also worked for Ken Sleight, the famous river runner, wilderness guide and activist.

The two brothers were such familiar sights on the Colorado River that they were immortalized in a poem by Vaughn Short called Seldom Seen and His Macho Crew. (Seldom Seen Smith is a character inspired by Sleight in Abbeys 1975 classic novel The Monkey Wrench Gang, about using sabotage to protest the destruction of the environment.)

According to Will Putman, who put Shorts words to music, the poem tells the story of a Grand Canyon raft trip in the 1970s, when the Bureau of Reclamation was using most of the Colorados water to fill in behind the newly built Glen Canyon Dam.

They say the river cant be run/ The waters down It cant be done. But if anyone can shoot it through/ Its old Seldom Seen and his macho crew. ...

There were Kim and Mark the Crumbo two/ A couple of Bobs and a guy named Stu/ Making up that macho team/ That rowed the boats for Seldom Seen.

Relatives first reported the brothers overdue from a backcountry trip on Sept. 19, when they didnt return from their expected four-night excursion. That day, searchers found a vacant campsite on the south side of the lake, which can be reached only on foot.

The next day, ONeill, 67, of Chimacum, Washington, was found dead on the east shore of the lake, along with a canoe, paddle, personal flotation device and other items. An autopsy later revealed that ONeill had died of exposure specifically hypothermia, park officials announced.

Crews kept looking for Crumbo, who was still missing. With assistance from search dogs, they swept each trail in the area and searched the shoreline of Shoshone Lake by boat, gridding the water by helicopter, park officials said.

But the dayslong search transitioned from a rescue to a recovery effort later that week. The park services Submerged Resources Center then began using sonar equipment to search for clues in the lakes depths, to no avail.

On Oct. 8, Yellowstone officials announced that the recovery effort was being scaled back because of snow and freezing temperatures. It marked the last formal update from the park.

All of us at Yellowstone extend our deepest sympathies to the families, friends and colleagues of both Mark and Kim, Superintendent Cam Sholly said in a news release that day. I want to personally thank the teams from Yellowstone, other parks and agencies, and partner organizations who worked to help us locate Mark, and who continue search efforts to bring Kim home.

Authorities continue to investigate what happened to the two brothers. Unofficial searches also are ongoing, Crumbos wife said, as volunteers continue to walk the perimeter of Shoshone Lake.

The timing of this accident is unspeakably sad, but I take some comfort in knowing that they left us doing what they loved, Daniel Crumbo said, and that they had each other in what would be their last of many shared struggles. Both are dearly loved and missed, and deservedly so.

I cannot imagine how he didnt make it out of this one, said Ken Sanders, proprietor of Ken Sanders Rare Books in Salt Lake City. He said he got to know Kim Crumbo when they both appeared in the film Wrenched, a documentary about Abbeys eco-activism legacy.

Fare thee well, Crumbo, wherever you are, Sanders said.

Over the course of two decades, Kim Crumbo worked as a National Park Service river ranger, resource management specialist and wilderness coordinator in Grand Canyon National Park, as well as a park ranger. He retired from the park service in 1999. ONeill also worked as a park ranger at Washingtons Olympic National Park and the Grand Canyon before retiring from the park service.

Kelly Burke, a geologist and the executive director of Wild Arizona, met Crumbo about three decades ago on the Colorado River. Describing him as one of my dearest, most important friends and mentor and collaborator and warrior hero, Burke said he protected her from the very beginning.

(Courtesy Kelly Burke) Kim Crumbo works to remove tamarisk at Hidden Slough in Glen Canyon in 2008.

While facing rough rapids and harsh elements, Crumbo and Burke worked together on numerous projects along the river, repairing trails, collaborating with members of the Zuni tribe to control erosion of cultural and archaeological sites, and removing nonnative and invasive plant species.

One such effort involved removing tamarisk shrubs from a location in Glen Canyon called Hidden Slough, and replacing them with native cottonwood and willow trees. Today, those trees tower above the water.

Crumbo was well-read and intelligent, she said, and could speak at length about history, philosophy and the river. He wrote A River Runners Guide to the History of the Grand Canyon, in which he went into meticulous detail of nearly every mile of the 277-mile run, from its start at Lees Ferry to its end at the Grand Wash Cliffs.

Crumbo overlapped with many different groups and organizations over the years in his work to conserve and protect wild places, wildlife habitat connections and large predators especially wolves.

At the time of his trip to Yellowstone, he was working long hours as a board member and the wildlands coordinator for conservation nonprofit The Rewilding Institute. He also was serving as a board member for the Western Wildlife Conservancy and Wild Arizona (the merging of Arizona Wilderness Coalition with the Grand Canyon Wildlands Council, which he co-founded). And he was contributing to the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, a land conservation group, as well as the wildlife conservation groups Lobos of the Southwest and Project Coyote.

Crumbo was a highly skilled, highly dedicated volunteer, said John Davis, The Rewilding Institutes executive director, who had trekked through miles of wilderness with his friend and colleague. Crumbo was just doing the right thing for wild nature.

Burke agreed, saying Crumbo had been on fire lately.

Part of those efforts involved working with The Rewilding Institute to revise several of his papers in draft form. On Oct. 26, The Rewilding Institute posted a draft proposal that Crumbo had written in April to garner support for a Grand Staircase Wildlife Corridor.

Kims tragic disappearance left us all wondering how to carry on his heroic work for wild places and creatures, read an editors note accompanying the post. We quickly decided one of the many ways we need to help solidify Kims great legacy is by publishing his wild visions, even if they are in rough form. The world should know what Kim aimed to achieve.

The proposal describes Crumbos vision for a protected wild area that would go from Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona through Bryce Canyon National Park in southern Utah, linking habitat for migrating mule deer and mountain lions.

With Kims words echoing in our minds and hearts, the editors note continues, we call upon our fellow wilderness and wildlife advocates to push for protection of this whole area a potential major contribution to 30 by 30, a conservation plan endorsed by President Joe Biden that aims to conserve at least 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030.

(Courtesy Teri Cleeland) Kim Crumbo, wearing a black hat and shirt, is photographed in the 1980s with a group he took down the Grand Canyon.

Kim Crumbo and Mark Crumbo ONeill were both larger-than-life characters, Daniel Crumbo said.

But what people know less of, he continued, is how giving, loving, caring, and thoughtful these two men were.

Kim Crumbo completed two combat deployments to Vietnam, but he really hated war, his wife noted. Her husband wouldnt like her analyzing, she said, but she thought the desert landscape of the Grand Canyon gave him a good contrast to Vietnam.

He was gracious and refined, Burke said, but he also had a mischievous side and a wry sense of humor. He was a fan of director Mel Brooks movies, especially Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, she said.

Teri Cleeland, who took two river trips with Crumbo in the 1980s, said Crumbo was charismatic but also humble. She recalls him hiking 10 miles out of the Grand Canyon like it was nothing, just to meet up with someone.

Its hard to believe that nature caught up with him finally, because he seemed indestructible, Cleeland said. That legend continues.

In his many heavy-duty adventures, Crumbo did have a lot of close scrapes that he never should have survived, his wife said. Hed been in a helicopter crash in Vietnam, and the aircraft had burst into flames. Hed been attacked by an elk. Hed faced innumerable, monstrous river rapids.

Four years ago, hed also had both of his shoulders replaced, one after the other. And it had all been taking a toll on him, his wife said.

Ironically, when Crumbo and his brother chose to go to Yellowstone, they had been wanting a low-key getaway, she said a few days in a beautiful place that would recharge them mentally and spiritually.

Perhaps they found it after seeing their reflections in Shoshone Lakes still waters. She thinks Crumbo and ONeill may have been deceived by that tranquility, and mistakenly thought they didnt need to wear life jackets.

She believes a microburst hit the lake that September day, creating treacherous weather conditions that wouldve tested the limits of any legends, let alone two men with aging bodies.

When asked if she held any hope that Crumbo might still be alive, she said, No, flatly. Her family is planning to hold a memorial service for Crumbo in Tucson, Arizona, later this month.

Even if Crumbos body is found someday, it may never be known what exactly happened to him and his brother.

But according to his longtime friend and fellow Sierra Club volunteer Jim Catlin, Crumbo died the way that made most sense for him: He went into the wild itself.

(Jacob W. Frank | National Park Service) The body of Mark Crumbo O'Neill was found on the east shore of Shoshone Lake in Yellowstone National Park on Sept. 20. His brother Kim Crumbo disappeared in the same area.

NASA Calls Russia Irresponsible for Blowing up One of Its Satellites Near International Space Station With Missile – Science Times

Posted: at 11:24 pm

Astronauts had to take refuge on board their transport vessel when the International Space Station (ISS) flew dangerously near a field of orbital debris. This was after Russia launched a direct-ascent anti-satellite (DA-ASAT) missile into space on Monday. The rocket blew up one of its own spacecraft and spread thousands of bits of debris into orbit.

As the orbiting lab sailed through a field of orbital debris, or space trash, early Monday morning, flight controllers awoke the seven-person crew of the ISS. They told them to go back to their spacecraft.

According to the US State Department (via Engadget), Russia's anti-satellite missile test produced more than 1,500 pieces of trackable orbital debris, as well as hundreds of thousands of smaller bits.

US Space Command began tracking the space trash in the early hours of the morning, the Associated Presssaid. The station passed through the debris field every 90 minutes, causing the crew to seal and reopen numerous compartments several times during the day.

The four American astronauts, one German astronaut, and two Russian astronauts onboard the International Space Station must remain vigilant for the next few days.

(Photo : Wikimedia Commons)The International Space Station as seen from the departing Space Shuttle Discovery during STS-119. In view are the four pairs of solar arrays mounted along the newly-completed Integrated Truss Structure. The newest and final part of the ITS, launched on this mission, is the S6 truss and arrays, visible to the far left of this image.

Over the previous few years, US Space Command has been monitoring Russian ASAT testing. Two tests of Russia's Nudol ASAT technology were announced by the US Space Command in 2020. Both experiments, however, did not appear to destroy any space targets.

In a statement to The Verge, US Space Command said it was "aware of a debris-generating event" in space that morning.

According to the United States Space Command, they are actively trying to describe the debris field and will continue to guarantee that all space-faring nations have the information they need to move satellites if they are hit. They're also working with the interagency on these reports, which includes the State Department and NASA, and will offer an update soon.

On Twitter, private space tracking business LeoLabs verified that it had seen many objects in the vicinity of an aging Russian satellite known as Kosmos 1408, which has now been confirmed as the target of the ASAT test.

On Monday (November 15), NASA Administrator Bill Nelson blasted a Russian anti-satellite test that put the International Space Station in danger of colliding with the debris.

"Earlier today, due to the debris generated by the destructive Russian Anti-Satellite (ASAT) test, ISS astronauts and cosmonauts undertook emergency procedures for safety," Nelson said in a NASA statement.

"I'm outraged by this irresponsible and destabilizing action," he added per Space.com. "With its long and storied history in human spaceflight, it is unthinkable that Russia would endanger not only the American and international partner astronauts on the ISS, but also their own cosmonauts."

According to Nelson, the acts are rash and risky. The actions, he added, could likewise endanger the Chinese space station and the taikonauts on board.

Russia's dangerous and irresponsible behavior jeopardizes the long-term sustainability of outer space, according to State Department spokesman Ned Price (via CNBC Space Reporter Michael Sheetz on Twitter), and clearly demonstrates that Russia's (claims) to oppose the weaponization of space are disingenuous and hypocritical.

Satellites and human spaceflight are both threatened by space debris, which is a big hazard. Even the tiniest particles of debris orbiting the Earth at 17,500 miles per hour could pierce a gasoline tank or destroy a battery, and there are around 23,000 pieces larger than a softball, half a million pieces the size of a marble or larger, and about 100 million pieces.04 inches and larger.

The Cosmos 1408 satellite, which the Soviet Union sent into space in 1982, was damaged by a Russian ground-based missile on Monday (Moscow time). The debris might linger in orbit for years, if not decades, according to the US Space Command.

Secure World Foundation program planning head Brian Weeden told Houston Chroniclethat the satellite was between 290 and 300 miles in altitude. The International Space Station is now around 260 miles above the Earth's surface.

Russia's ground-based anti-satellite missile has been tested many times since 2014. Previous ground-based experiments, according to Weeden, did not produce debris since they did not impact satellites.

In the past, condemnation was hit or miss. The United States got angry when China destroyed its 2007 Fengyun-1C meteorological satellite.

The United States launched its own space rocket the next year. It justified the destruction of a US National Reconnaissance Office satellite that was falling out of orbit with around 1,000 pounds of highly hazardous hydrazine fuel onboard due to safety concerns.

Former NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine criticized India's destruction of one of its satellites in 2019. Still, the White House later reversed its position, according to Weeden.

At an altitude of roughly 149 miles, the American satellite was destroyed, while the Indian satellite was destroyed at an altitude of around 186 miles. Both of these experiments, according to Weeden, left debris in orbit.

However, China's test destroyed a satellite at a height of 535 miles, resulting in almost 3,500 pieces of debris. Jonathan McDowell of the Center for Astrophysics tweetedthat 2,737 fragments were still in orbit on Tuesday of last week.

Last week, officials were considering adjusting the orbit of the space station due to debris. Although the space station did not need to be relocated away from the Chinese debris, authorities went ahead and did so. It took the place of a planned "reboost" to maintain the space station's appropriate height.
