Women’s Six Nations: Tournament to start in ‘spring or summer’ – BBC Sport

Posted: January 13, 2021 at 4:19 pm

England won the Grand Slam in a delayed finish to the 2020 Women's Six Nations, completing their fixtures in November

The 2021 Women's Six Nations will be delayed - but organisers are aiming for a spring or summer start.

Full details are expected by the end of January, with the men's Six Nations set to start as planned in February.

Ireland, Scotland and Italy's Women's Six Nations fixtures may double as 2021 World Cup qualification matches given none of the three have yet secured a place at the tournament.

The Under-20 Six Nations has also been delayed until later in 2021.

Like the women's tournament, it would normally run at the same time as the men's Six Nations.

The news comes after the Rugby Football Union told BBC Sport last week it had "concerns" about the tournament because of complications around planning. England are the competition's only fully professional side.

Organisers say they are "fiercely committed to the promotion and development of rugby at all levels, particularly the women's game, where we see exciting opportunity for growth".

With the men's Six Nations set to go ahead on its original dates, despite concerns around French participation, it would give the women's tournament an opportunity to step out of the men's shadow.

The World Cup starts in New Zealand on 18 September and there are still three places to be filled, with 12 countries in contention to secure them.

There are six European countries trying to win places, with Spain, Russia and the Netherlands still needing to complete the 2020 Rugby Europe Championship.

The winner of this will join Italy, Ireland and Scotland in a European qualification tournament that was originally scheduled to take place in December 2020, but was postponed amid coronavirus concerns. The winner will get a place at the World Cup in Pool B, while the runner-up will have one last chance to qualify through the repechage.

The winner of the Asia Rugby Women's Championship 2020 will also head to the World Cup and join Pool B. Hong Kong, Japan and Kazakhstan have been given dates in March to play this event in Hong Kong. The runner-up will head to the repechage.

Either Kenya or Colombia will also head into the repechage after a play-off match. Kenya earned their place in this game by coming second in the 2019 Rugby Africa Women's Cup while Colombia were South America champions.

Samoa are to represent Oceania in the repechage.

World Rugby is yet to announce plans for all the unscheduled games, however moving so many predominately amateur teams across international borders will be complex.

It is thought that using world rankings to award the final places will be a back-up plan if all the fixtures cannot be completed.

Home All Whites matches in June? The outlook for New Zealand’s men’s football teams in 2021 – Stuff.co.nz

Posted: at 4:19 pm

Abigail Dougherty/Stuff

NZ Football chief executive Andrew Pragnell says it wants qualifying for the 2022 Fifa World Cup to begin as soon as possible.

The All Whites could play at home for the first time in almost four years in June, if Oceania qualifying for the 2022 Fifa World Cup is able to get underway and New Zealand Football is successful with its bid to host the initial matches.

Qualifying was originally scheduled to start in September 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on international travel and borders made that impossible, and the latest word from the Oceania Football Confederation was that it would not start before June 2021.

In a statement in November, OFC said it would work with Fifa to agree upon the World Cup qualifying process and will continue to collaborate with its Member Associations to determine the best steps forward.

NZ Football chief executive Andrew Pragnell said the organisation was eager to host matches in June after acknowledging there wasnt likely to be anything for the All Whites before then and hoped qualifying would be able to begin sooner, rather than later.

We're strong advocates that the men's qualification pathway has to get away as soon as possible, within all the health and safety requirements that we have to manage.

OFC are obviously interested in that as well, and we think New Zealand would be a great place to host a tournament to get that pathway underway in 2021.

If we leave that to 2022, it puts enormous challenges on whoever the OFC qualifier is for the intercontinental playoff, so thats a really big focus for us, working with the OFC and our Government to see if we can make that happen.

The All Whites last played at home in November 2017, when they hosted Peru in the first leg of the intercontinental playoff for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and are seeking to qualify for the World Cup for the third time under coach Danny Hay.

STUFF

Phoenix recruit Clayton Lewis hopes to play his way back into the All Whites.

While the format of Oceania qualifying is yet to be finalised, the best team from the region will have to win an intercontinental playoff in June 2022 to secure their place in the 32-team event in Qatar in November and December that year.

The start of qualification for the 2022 World Cup is one of two major international mens football events on the horizon in 2021, Covid-19 permitting.

The other is the Tokyo Olympics, still scheduled to start in July, where the Hay-coached OlyWhites are scheduled to take part in the mens football tournament, which is for teams made up predominantly of under-24 players (those born since January 1, 1997).

2021 will be a quieter year than usual, however, after Fifa announced on Christmas Day [NZ time] that the Under-17 and Under-20 World Cups scheduled to take place in 2021 would be cancelled due to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Participation in those tournaments has often helped young Kiwi footballers secure moves overseas All Whites midfielder Joe Bell signing for Viking in Norway is one recent example and their cancellation in 2021 could hurt some players professional prospects.

All Whites and Wellington Phoenix midfielder Clayton Lewis played at the 2013 Under-17 World Cup and the 2015 and 2017 Under-20 World Cups, and said this week it would be tough for those lads who were wanting to go to those tournaments.

It was a big opportunity for me to be on the world stage and to showcase what Im about.

I was lucky enough to play in two under-20 World Cups and that helped with my move to England [when he signed with Scunthorpe United in 2017].

It will be tough for those boys, but theyve got to look at the bright side and know that there will be opportunities elsewhere, whether it be with the under-23s or just with their clubs.

Everyones looking at New Zealanders nowadays, so theyre going to get opportunities regardless.

WABC hold female coaches clinic in the Gold Coast – FIBA

Posted: at 4:19 pm

GOLD COAST (Australia) - The Women in Basketball strategy of FIBA kickstarted basketball activities in Australia with a World Association of Basketball Coaches Clinic (WABC) held in the Gold Coast.

In partnership with FIBA, Basketball Australia, and Gold Coast Basketball, the event initially had over 50 participants registering for the coaching clinic, unfortunately, because of restrictions not everyone was able to attend but it was still able to welcome 36 female coaches.

"We are pleased with the turnout because despite the lockdown in Brisbane and surrounding areas we were still able to get a good number of participants for the clinic," shared FIBA in Oceania Development Manager, Annie La Fleur.

Led by WABC President Patrick Hunt, the clinic featured esteemed coaches, Sandy Brondello, Jackie Brown, and Jan Stirling discussing developing perimeter players, drills for running the game, and teaching post-play respectively.

Brondello is the head coach of the Australia National Women's team while Brown was the 2019 Basketball Queensland Coach of the Year and Stirling is the General Manager of High Performance for Basketball Australia and a FIBA Hall of Fame member.

Brondello commended the program and shared that she is proud to be part of the clinic that promotes and helps develop female basketball coaches.

"I love being a part of a community where women are supporting women to develop and grow as coaches. Much respect to Basketball Australia and FIBA for investment in promoting female-only coaching clinics," she stated.

The clinic also featured players from the Gold Coast Under 18 Girls team which provided practical presentations and situations for the coaches to learn.

"We are lucky to have the U18 Gold Coast girls team participate in the clinic, they are a talented team and to be exposed to the knowledge of the coaches involved will certainly help them in their basketball skill," stated La Fleur.

The WABC clinic was recorded and will be uploaded on the FIBA WABC YouTube channel for free, to provide more online learning for aspiring coaches around the world.

In the closing remarks of Hunt, the Australian hoped that the participants will mentor at least one female coach this year to grow the pool of female coaches which is in line with the Women in Basketball strategy of FIBA.

Australia is only developed nation included on list of 24 global deforestation fronts – NEWS.com.au

Posted: at 4:19 pm

Australia is the only developed nation to be listed as one of 24 global deforestation fronts in a new World Wide Fund for Nature report.

The report looks at 24 places with a significant concentration of deforestation hotspots or where large areas of remaining forests are under threat.

Eastern Australia is among the 24 places analysed across 30 countries. Together they made up 52 per cent of the total deforestation in Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and Oceania between 2004 and 2017.

In eastern Australia, the report said by far the most significant driver of forest loss or degradation was due to cattle ranching, in which trees are cut down to create pasture for cattle.

An important secondary cause was logging, which the report said remains significant in some places in eastern Australia.

Land clearing rates rocketed after the axing of restrictions in Queensland and NSW, WWF-Australia conservation scientist Dr Martin Taylor said.

He said the report placed eastern Australia alongside the most infamous places in the world for forest destruction.

While Queensland did restore some restrictions in 2018, Dr Taylor said eastern Australia remained a deforestation front.

That will not change until we see rates of destruction go down, he said.

Significantly, the impact of the 2019/20 Black Summer bushfires was not included, as the report, Deforestation fronts: Drivers and responses in a changing world, only tracked the destruction between 2004 and 2017.

Forest destruction was already bad enough for the region to be declared a global deforestation front, then the 2019-20 bushfires burned about 12.6 million hectares in eastern Australia, Dr Taylor said.

RELATED: Report highlights Australias poor performance

Eastern Australia was previously included among a list of 11 deforestation fronts identified in WWFs Saving Forests at Risk analysis released in 2015.

This years report estimates an area of forest six times the size of Tasmania more than 43 million hectares was lost among the 24 deforestation fronts over 13 years.

Nine areas were assessed to have undergone high rates of deforestation including several in Latin America, such as the Amazon in Brazil and Bolivia, as well as Madagascar in Africa, and Sumatra and Borneo in Southeast Asia.

Eastern Australia was included among 10 fronts considered to have experienced medium deforestation, among countries in sub-Saharan Africa such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, along with the Amazon in Colombia and Peru, and the lower Mekong in Laos and Myanmar.

Deforestation includes forest that is being permanently converted to other land uses or theres been a significant reduction of permanent tree cover. It is considered one of a number of factors that contribute to global warming.

Last year the 2020 Climate Transparency Report highlighted Australia as being one of the worst performers when it comes to emissions reduction in deforestation, transport and energy efficient buildings, when compared to other G20 countries.

Dr Taylor said his Pervasive Inaction report found almost 250,000 hectares of threatened species habitat were destroyed between 2016 and 2018 in Queensland, with no evidence of any referral and approval under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

Dr Taylor also suggests that claims forest area had expanded in Australia were misleading.

Such claims are based on classifying young regrowth, often only knee-high, from previous clearing, as forest, he said.

Knee-high saplings are not a forest and do not balance out the ongoing destruction of older forests decades or centuries old.

Dr Taylor said eastern Australias forests, renowned for their biodiversity, and unique species like the koala, were under enormous pressure.

To stop extinction Australia needs to step up our efforts to protect critical forest habitats for Australian wildlife, particularly unburned low fire-risk refuges, and let those that have been cleared regenerate, he said.

WWF wants this to be the last time Australia winds up on this infamous list of deforestation fronts, he said.

That will not happen until state safeguards axed in the past decade are restored and until the national environment law starts to be fully enforced.

He said WWF-Australia had launched Regenerate Australia, the largest wildlife and nature regeneration program in the countrys history, to try and reverse the decline.

Oceania Cruises’ Immersive New Wellness Concept – World of Cruising

Posted: December 19, 2020 at 8:08 am

Cruising has done a complete 180 in recent years and no longer is it about eating as much as humanly possible, gorging at every meal and, in reality, walking off the ship feeling worse than when you stepped on. Now, the cruise industry has woken up to the exciting world of wellness, offering cruises that make passengers feel the best version of themselves, and leave feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and glowing with health.

One of the cruise lines championing wellness is Oceania Cruises, a cruise line known for having the Finest Cuisine at Sea and a dreamy selection of shore excursions and on-board activities which allow guests to explore a destination through its food.

The cruise line has long been known for its gastronomic cruise experience, its Michelin-quality restaurants and immersive foodie experiences, but it's its brand-new wellness concept that's now attracting our attention, a concept which debuted on its fleet of six luscious ships last year.

Oceania Cruises now has one of the most fantastic wellness offerings at sea, thanks to its new wellness centre, the Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center and the acclaimed Wellness Discovery Tours. The spa concept has brought Oceania Cruises into a new era of wellness, and paired with the Finest Cuisine at Sea, magnificent destinations and a fleet of intimate luxury ships, now offers one of the most incredible and immersive cruise experiences in the industry.

While travelling the world, guests can once again immerse themselves even more with indulgent and luxuriant spa treatments, which are designed to calm the mind and make you glow on both the inside and out, along with enjoying complimentary classes in the state-of-the-art fitness centre and dining on fresh, whole produce.

The beating heart of Oceania Cruises' new wellness offering is the all-new Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center, the perfect place to spend a morning or sea day, offering luxuriant destination-inspired treatments like aroma stone therapy, Vital bamboo massages and restorative salt stone massages. Bringing out your most radiant self, there are also marine detox wraps, sea lavender and samphire mineralising wraps and sublime beauty treatments like the 'caviar firm and lift facial' and 'line eraser powered by Biotec' a miraculous and powerful anti-ageing and rejuvenating treatment. With its core values being balance, restore, renew, vitality, energise, nourish and enrich, the Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center also offers treatments like acupuncture, and an 'Ionthermie revitalising leg therapy', along with myriad therapy pools and steam rooms for ultimate relaxation.

For those who want to energise before or after a treatment, stay on top of or start a fitness regime, Oceania Cruises Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center is also leading the way when it comes to fitness. Guests can partake in a peaceful sunrise yoga class on deck or work up a sweat in a one-to-one personal training session or a complimentary group fitness class. Equipment includes treadmills with heart-rate monitoring, strength-training machines and free weights, and classes include Pilates and an ever-changing timetable of classes. Oceania Cruises larger ships Marina and Riviera also feature a Kinesis exercise wall, combining cardio, strength and flexibility in one workout.

As we said, it's now possible to leave a cruise ship in better shape and looking more youthful and radiant than before...

Of course, every wellness lover will know that health and wellbeing isn't just relaxation and mindfulness, it's also just as much about what you eat. Delivering the whole wellness experience, Oceania Cruises has been working hard to deliver a superlative healthy food offering with the highest-quality ingredients and whole foods available used. A new introduction for the cruise line is its impressive range of gourmet plant-based menus, which are on offer for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Instead of having an oozing stack of American pancakes, why not opt for fluffy oatmeal banana pancakes? Other delicious additions include creamy avocado toast on fresh, rustic farmer's bread and fresh breakfast blueberry bowls packed with antioxidants.

Some of our favourite lunch items from Oceania Cruises' new wellness-inspired menu include taste-tingling, fresh dishes like Korean kimchi soup, Wakame sesame salad, Hawaiian poke bowl and pesto penne with broccoli and sundried tomato. For dinner, there are gastronomic dishes like gourmet spicy som tam (green papaya kelp and noodle salad), warming roasted butternut squash with rocket, mango, black radish and hearts of palm and crispy falafel fritters with plant-based harissa mayo, cucumber, mint and capers.

For Oceania Cruises, its focus on wellness doesnt end when passengers disembark its ships, and the concept and mindset even stretches to the unparalleled and exotic destinations it sails. The cruise line offers some of the most fantastic wellness-inspired excursions in the industry, especially in Asia, one of the most sacred, historical and fascinating landscapes in the world.

Passengers are able to indulge in excursions like a yoga and biking tour in Vietnams Nha Trang, Saigonese organic food tastings and Tai Chi in Ho Chi Minh City and a visit to an Ibusuki Sand Bath in Japans Kagoshima. Perhaps one of the most special excursions, however, is a mediation experience with a monk in Bangkok. Escaping the buzz of Thailands cacophonic capital in search of peace and relaxation, guests travel to a serene Buddhist temple to learn the art of mediation and see how it can lead to self-liberation and enlightenment.

Sailing with Oceania Cruises is so much more than indulging your body with dining on Michelin-star food, its also about indulgence for the mind and soul. From sunrise yoga and Thai Chi on board through to unique spa treatments, therapy pools, fitness classes, raw and vegan menus and unique and priceless shore experiences, Oceania Cruises is pioneering wellness cruising.

Army Reserve and National Guard Soldiers Partner in the Pacific – United States Army

Posted: at 8:08 am

SUVA, FIJI The U.S. Army 322 Civil Affairs Brigade, part of the 9th Mission Support Command (MSC), is currently partnering with three Soldiers from the Army National Guard to conduct civil-military operations in the Oceania region of the Pacific. The three Guardsmen are Maj. Patrick Arizmendi and Cpt. Luis Muruato of the Nevada National Guard and Cpt. Chris Meza of the Wisconsin National Guard. These states currently have existing partnerships with Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and Tonga as part of the National Guards State Partnership Program (SPP).In 2019, U.S. Army Pacific directed the 9th MSC to perform the Task Force Oceania (TF-O) mission. Under command of the 9th MSC, headquartered at Fort Shafter Flats, Hawaii, 322 Civil Affairs Brigade will support U.S. Embassies in the region through security cooperation efforts to enhance partner nation capacity and build relationships. The Army National Guard State Partnership Program consists of direct partnerships between each states National Guard and different countries around the world.U.S. Ambassador to Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga and Tuvalu, Joseph Cella said, We have a very high regard for the State Partnership Program, it is exemplary, and it has born great fruit during a very important time of the history of the Indo-Pacific. This program is integral to maintaining the 75 years of peace the Indo-Pacific has been blessed with, which we have commemorated and celebrated throughout this year. It allows us to work alongside our partners in the Indo-Pacific for our joint development and deployment readiness through expert exchanges and training. As a fortifier of bridges, I am pleased to herald and promote the importance and efficacy of this program that reinforces our enduring partnerships and advances security in the Indo-Pacific.The SPP has successfully built relationships over 25 years and now includes 78 partnerships with 84 nations around the globe. SPP links a unique component of the Department of Defense - the states National Guard forces - with the armed forces or equivalent of a partner country in a cooperative, mutually beneficial relationship, said Arizmendi.Working directly with the Army Reserve is a great opportunity. This is my first time working directly with this component, and I am impressed by the professionalism of the Soldiers of the 322. This is a unique mission in a unique part of the world, and I believe the parallels between SPP and Task Force Oceania makes this a mutually beneficial partnership for both components, said Muruato. The Reserves, by partnering with the National Guard, bring a multitude of force multipliers ranging from non-commissioned officer schools to tactical training opportunities. A continued partnership between the organizations allows both parties to present our partner nations with these opportunities and can serve as a bridge between two components that would otherwise rarely interact with each other, said Meza.Colonel Blaise Zandoli, TF-O Commander, believes having the National Guardsmen on the team brings value to the Armys mission beyond the addition of well-trained Soldiers. Bringing Guardsmen onto the team also adds the stability of a habitual Army relationship with the SPP partnered countries that helps ground TF-O and provides another line of effort for SPP. Its a real win-win for the Army Reserves and the National Guard.

Competitive Oceanic League of Legends is BACK! – Esports Kingdom

Posted: at 8:08 am

Competitive Oceanic League of Legends is BACK!

Today ESL Gaming and Guinevere Capital announced a new partnership that will see a new competitive league for Oceanic League of Legends operate in 2021.

After a year of success in competitive Oceanic League of Legends, which saw an impressive Worlds run by Legacy Esports, and multiple Oceanic players move to pursue international opportunities, the league will offer new opportunities for existing League of Legends players and teams from around the region to compete.

Designed in collaboration with the 8 existing professional League of Legends esports organizations in Oceania, the league will be operated by ESL and Guinevere Capital with fans able to look forward to regular broadcasts of their favourite teams on the rift. Riot Games will be providing a three-year license to ESL and Guinevere Capital to operate the competitions with an extension option for a further three years.

Nick Vanzetti, ESL SVP Asia-Pacific Japan:

From running the first official tournaments on the Oceanic servers to helping produce the OPL Finals at the Melbourne Esports Open, the ESL team have always had competitive League of Legends in our DNA, so when the opportunity to build a new league, and create new opportunities for League of Legends players in Oceania presented itself, we jumped on it. We're excited for what's in store for the competitive Oceanic LoL ecosystem in 2021, and look forward to working with the team at Guinevere and Riot to create something that fans and competitors alike can be proud of.

Dave Harris, Guinevere Capitals Managing Director:

OPL was our first step into esports back in 2016 through a team investment and despite having moved on to be involved in other regions, titles and projects since, we have always been parochial supporters of the OCE scene and LoL in particular. Our philosophy has been based around developing young talent and there are many examples of players, coaches and casters from this region becoming globally relevant. We genuinely believe this new league can be a case study for elsewhere in the world with the freedom to innovate and build a sustainable esports model in what is still an emerging region.

Sean Callanan, owner of Gravitas:

From a team's perspective, as a group, we are excited to be working with ESL and Guinevere Capital to develop a new league for LoL Esports fans in Oceania. All 8 teams are committed to continuing to develop a strong ecosystem for all involved. We look forward to renewing rivalries on Summoner's Rift.

More information about the league will be shared in early 2021.
