Carol enters quarterfinals – Saipan Tribune

Posted: at 5:34 am

World-ranked Carol Lee had another easy win in the 2017 Oceania Closed Junior Championships yesterday at the Regional Training Center in Lautoka, Fiji.

Lee swept Elys Saguil-Ventura of Australia, 6-3, 6-0, in the second round match in the girls singles event of the B2 tournament. Lee also came from a two-set victory (similar scores) in her opening game against Saguil-Venturas compatriot Grace Schumacher last Monday to move to Round 2. Saguil-Ventura, on the other hand, edged Tahitis Naia Guitton to earn the right to face Lee in the next round.

With the world No. 239 Lee cutting Saguil-Venturas stint in the ITF Juniors competition short, the CNMI player arranged a quarterfinal showdown against a familiar foe in Australias Megan Smith. Lee and Smith will meet for the third time today after splitting their first two duels. The Commonwealth bet outclassed the Queensland native, 4-6, 6-3, 10-2, in the finals of the consolation draw of the 14/U Australian Championships two years ago. Smith then settled the score in the same tournament (team event) when she also slipped past Lee in the first singles match, 5-4 (5), 3-5, 7-10.

Regardless of the results of Lees third collision with Smith, the 15-year-old player has already surpassed her performance in the Oceania Closed last year. Lee only won one match in the 2016 edition of the tournament in Fiji, beating Australias Monique Belovukovic of Australia, 6-0, 6-2, before losing to Mikaela Haet, also of Australia, in the Round of 16, 5-7, 1-6.

The CNMI junior player has also improved her results in the doubles after she and Australias Oleksandra Kalachova prevailed against the latters compatriot Isabella Bozicevic and Helena Spiridis in their first round match yesterday, 6-2, 6-3. Last year, Lee teamed up with Palaus Ayana Rengiil and they bowed to Ella Husrefovic and Jessica Zaviacic in the opening round, 5-7, 4-6.

With the victory this time, Lee and Kalachova gained a spot in the quarterfinals and incidentally they will challenge Smith and Roopa Bains for a seat in the semifinals. Bains and Smith advanced to the Round of 3 following a 6-1, 7-5 win over the CNMIs Isabel Heras and Australias Milan Krish.

Heras is done in the doubles, but will still play in the singles event. She is in the plate after losing her opener in the main draw and will battle Australias Joy Andreou today.

Robbie Schorr, the third Commonwealth player entered in the tournament, is in the plate, too of the boys singles play and will square off against Vanuatus Marlin Hannam.

Carol eases through first round – Saipan Tribune

Posted: at 4:31 am

The CNMIs Carol Lee needed only two sets to win her opening round match in the 2017 Oceania Closed Junior Championships yesterday at the Regional Training Center in Lautoka, Fiji.

Lee outclassed Australias Grace Schumaster in the first set, 6-3, and then demolished her Land Down Under foe in the second, 6-0, to cruise to the second round of the ITF Juniors event. In Round 2, the Commonwealth bet will be pitted against New Zealands Elys Saguil-Ventura, who eliminated Lees Pacific Oceania teammate Naia Guitton of Tahiti, 6-4, 6-3. Lee and Saguil-Ventura will battle for the quarterfinals slot today.

The fourth seeded Lee is at the lower half of the 32-player field and though she is among the favorites in the tournament, she does not want to think way ahead and be overconfident.

I really want to win but I have to manage my expectations and just take it one match at a time. If I think ahead I could lose focus. Theres always pressure to perform well and my expectations of myself are always high regardless of seeding or draws. Ive worked hard on the mental aspect of my game, trying to embrace the pressure rather than give in to it, Lee said.

She added that the level of competition in the Oceania Closed Championship is so high that even seeded players should not be complacent or else they would find themselves out of the race.

The competition is tough and all the players have worked hard to peak at this tournament as its the strongest ITF tournament in the Pacific every year, the CNMI player said.

Several players ranked in the Top 300 are entered in the competition and also suiting up in the B2 tournament are nationally ranked players from Australia, New Zealand, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Samoa, and American Samoa.

Lees fellow CNMI player Isabel Heras got a taste of the difficult games in the tournament after bowing to Australias Zara Brankovic, 0-6, 1-6, in yesterdays opening round. Another Commonwealth representativeRobbie Schorralso lost his first singles match when he fell to Aussie Dylan Heap, 0-6, 4-6.

Schorr will also play in the doubles and will team up with Guams Mason Caldwell. The CNMI-Guam combination will have its opening match today against Camden Camacho, also from Guam, and Marlin Hannam of Vanuatu.

In the girls doubles, Lee is joining forces with Australias Oleksadra Kalachova and the fourth-seeded pair will duel the Aussie duo of Isabella Bozicevic and Helena Spiridis today for a spot in the quarterfinals. Heras, on the other hand, is partnering with Milan Krish, also of Australia, and they will challenge Roopa Bains and Megan Smith.

Tahiti move onto the next stage of Rugby World Cup 2019 qualification after beating the Cook Islands for the first time to win the Oceania Rugby Cup 2017.

Tahiti remain in the hunt for a place in the Rugby World Cup 2019 repechage tournament after upsetting the Cook Islands 13-9 to win the Oceania Rugby Cup 2017 in Rarotonga on Friday.

They will face the Asia Rugby Championship 2018 champion in a home and away play-off with the winner progressing to the four-team global repechage tournament that will determine the 20th and final qualifier for Japan 2019.

Tahiti went into the match at the National Stadium in Rarotonga, the largest of the Cook Islands, sitting 43 places below their hosts in the World Rugby Rankings and never having tasted victory in the head to head.

"I am very proud of the guys, for us this is an historical victory, the first time winning the Oceania Rugby Cup made more beautiful as it was our first win against the Cook Islands."

Tahiti captain Tunui Anania

However, it was the 91st-ranked Tahiti, buoyed by their French club-based players, who took a second-minute lead through fly-half Andoni Jimenez's penalty, although this was cancelled out nine minutes later by centre Jamian Iroa's own kick.

The first try came on the half-hour mark when winger Vincent Perez crossed for Tahiti in a passage of play that would see Cooks fly-halfGreg Mullany sent to the sin-bin.

Two penalties from the boot of Iroa saw the Cooks take the lead for the first time, but on the stroke of half-time scrum-half Guilliaume Brouqui scored a try to send Tahiti in with a 13-9 advantage.

That would prove to be the final score in a match with Iroa missing a fourth penalty attempt midway through a half which saw five yellow cards and a player for each team sent off in Tahiti prop Martin Taeae and Cooks centre Samuela Longo Leuta.

Firstly I want to thank our hosts the Cook Islands for todays match and secondly I just wanted to say that I am very proud of the guys, for us this is an historical victory, the first time winning the Oceania Rugby Cup made more beautiful as it was our first win against the Cook Islands, saidTahiti captain Tunui Anania.

Tahiti coach Romi Ropati added: We are absolutely stoked with todays result, it has been very humbling. The boys are going to enjoy tonight and celebrate with friends and family when we return home tomorrow, after that we will look forward to our preparation on the next step for Rugby World Cup qualification.

Cook Islands captain Francis Smith paid tribute to their conquerors after seeing their RWC 2019 dream end at the first hurdle. Congratulations to Tahiti it was a well fought game. The boys were disappointed with the result but proud to be Cook Islanders and the team will come back from this loss.

The victory will lift Tahiti three places to 88th above the Bahamas, Cameroon and Swaziland when the World Rugby Rankings update at 12 noon UK time on Monday. The Cook Islands will drop eight places to 56th

While dozens of Oceania Aviations cargo pods have been actively operating in New Zealand and Canada in heli-skiing, tourism, logging and routine utility operations; Airborne Systems managing engineer, Russell Goulden, is delighted that the much coveted FAA STC has finally been awarded after years of personal effort.

Goulden is no newcomer to developing specialist helicopter role equipment and his expertise has been recognized globally during the development of barrier inlet filtration, external hoisting and avant-garde agricultural spray systems. Exploiting the U.S./N.Z. bilateral relationship and using the U.S./New Zealand Technical Implementation Procedures, attained the FAA STC on July 7, 2017.

Approvals for the Airborne Systems H125 cargo pod include the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand, Transport Canada and now FAA.

Nokia’s Oceania head jumps to NBN – Computerworld Australia

Posted: at 1:34 pm

Nokias managing director for Oceania, Ray Owen, will leave the company to take up an executive position at NBN.

NBN announced today that it had appointed Owen to the role of chief technology officer. The companys former CTO, Dennis Steiger, departed earlier this year.

Nokia is one of NBNs key partners in its network rollout thanks to its acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent.

Ray has done an outstanding job as managing director of Nokias Oceania business, where he has grown our market presence over the last two and half years and led a very successful integration with the former Alcatel-Lucent organisation, said Nokia Oceania head of corporate affairs, Tim Marshall.

He leaves on good terms after deciding to pursue a career opportunity in a different part of the sector.

Its always sad to lose a valuable leader and colleague, but of course were very pleased for Ray and the opportunity for him to further his career. We wish him very well, Marshall said.

NBN in June revealed a significant restructure, which the company said reflected its preparation to move from network build to network operate and optimise as the rollout of the National Broadband Network continued.

As part of that round of changes NBNs JB Rousselot was shifted from chief network operations officer to chief strategy officer, leading the companys Strategy, Transformation, Regulatory and Technology division.

Owen will report to Rousselot, NBN said today.

We are delighted to welcome Ray to NBN and look forward to his vast experience in the global telecoms industry in helping us deliver the best possible network for Australians, Rousselot said in a statement.

Owens tenure at NBN is due to begin in November.
