Valve sees brain-computer interfaces as the future of gaming – Biometric Update

Brain signal processing may allow a more adaptive and immersive gaming experience

Gaming technology firm Valves Founder Gabe Newell urged developers to undertake brain-computer interface (BCI) studies, predicting that they will drastically change the gaming industry. According to Newell, gamers might soon be able to control their in-game movements via brain wave transmission thanks to emerging research and development in the field of BCIs, writes tvnz.com.

In a recent interview, Newell also announced an open-source project in partnership between Valve and the OpenBCI developer community. The project will allow creators to study and improve brain-signal processing in conjunction with VR headsets to enhance the gaming experience.

Aerendir has suggested biometric BCIs could upgrade mobile authentication security, and Neurotechnology launched a development kit for brainwave biometricslast year.

According to Valves Newell, the scanning process involves brainwaves being read through sensors placed in a headset. The gathered signals can then be interpreted to improve the gaming experience. Currently, data is taken from a players brain and body can be used to determine the individuals mental state. Excitement, boredom, surprise, and fear are only some of the emotions that can be captured using the proposed high-definition sensors.

Aside from allowing developers to personalize the gaming experience and make it more immersive, Newell also predicts that in the future these signals can be used to control in-game movements.

Were working on an open-source project so that everybody can have high-resolution [brain signal] read technologies built into headsets, in a bunch of different modalities, Newell added, If youre a software developer in 2022 who doesnt have one of these in your test lab, youre making a silly mistake.

Newell also predicts other applications resulting from BCI technology such as improved sleep and even emotional analysis and adjustments, at least some of which would presumably utilize brainwave data as biometrics. Asides from these benefits, he also added that BCIs are a vital element in improving artificial body parts.

The collaboration will allow Valve to incorporate OpenBCI products such as the planned Galea Headset to work in tandem with its signature Index VR headset.

Valve is building brain-computer interface for fully-immersive video games, president reveals – The Independent

The head of video game giant Valve has revealed that the company is working on a way to connect human brains to computers in order to revolutionise gaming and fundamentally alter human experience.

Gabe Newell told New Zealands 1 News that Valve is working with neuroscience platform OpenBCI to develop an open source brain-computer interface (BCI) software.

One of the goals is to allow people to fully immerse themselves in video games through a VR-style headset, however Mr Newell claimed that the ultimate potential is nearly limitless.

The idea of editing emotions or thoughts through BCIs is not a new one and has previously been floated by Elon Musks neurotechnology startup Neuralink.

Valve is yet to announce any details about when a working device might be made commercially available, though Mr Newell hinted that it is unlikely to be before 2022.

Mr Newell also said that beyond gaming, advances with BCI technology would transform sleep into just an app that you run in order to maximise body recovery and performance.

The brains flexibility means you could even make people think they have tentacles instead of arms, he claimed, though he also warned that user acceptance of such technology depended entirely on trust.

Theres nothing magical about these systems that make them less vulnerable to viruses or things like that, he said.

People are going to have to have a lot of confidence that these are secure systems that dont have longterm health risks.

VILNIUS, Lithuania, Jan. 18, 2021 /PRNewswire/ --Neurotechnology, a provider of deep-learning-based solutions and high-precision biometric identification and object recognition technologies, today announced the release of theSentiVeillance 8.0software development kit (SDK). WithSentiVeillance SDK, developers can create identification solutions that use live video streams from digital surveillance cameras or video files. The latest version adds face detection and recognition of people who are wearing masks and includes new algorithms that improve license plate detection and recognition speed and accuracy. It also provides new features for vehicle and human (VH) mode, including car make and model estimation, vehicle angle estimation and cloth and gender estimations for pedestrians. It includes a new working mode combination enabling face and VH modes to be used together for fast and accurate identification.

SentiVeillance 8.0 provides identification and analytics from live digital surveillance streams or video files.

The new SentiVeillance mode combination (face and VH) allows tracking of the subject even when the face is no longer visible functionality that is particularly useful in scenarios where tracking a person's position is important.

BIOMETRIC FACIAL RECOGNITIONThe high reliability of SentiVeillance's biometric facial identification algorithm allows it to be used with large watch-list databases, both for identifying a person who is on a list and adding new faces from video streams to watch-lists. It tracks identified faces as they move around the camera's field of view and continues tracking even if a person moves behind an object and re-appears. It is effective both close-in and at a distance when using high-resolution cameras. SentiVeillance can perform gender classification, evaluate a person's age, identify facial expressions (e.g. smile, open mouth, closed eyes) and detect particular attributes, such as if the person is wearing a mask, glasses or sunglasses and whether they have a beard or mustache.

VEHICLE and HUMAN DETECTION AND MOVEMENT TRACKING (VH)SentiVeillance detects both moving and static vehicles or people in a scene and performs object classification and tracking until the subjects disappear. In addition to pedestrian detection and vehicle classification by type, it provides identification of the specific vehicle make and model as well as its orientation. For pedestrians, SentiVeillance identifies different types of clothing and provides gender prediction. The algorithm also returns an estimation of paint color for vehicles and predominant clothing color for pedestrians, and it determines the vector in which they are moving (e.g. north, south, southwest).

AUTOMATIC LICENSE PLATE RECOGNITION (ALPR)The new ALPR capability in SentiVeillance automatically detects and reads vehicle license plates, recording the information from both stationary and moving vehicles within the scene. The latest release is up to 2 times faster for CPU uses and up to 5 times faster when a GPU is used. Accuracy testsreach 99.1% for >200 pixel width license plates and 88.7% for license plates captured from far away (<100 pixel width).

The latter two modes (VH and ALPR) can be used together to create larger, more varied solutions. For example, when conventional ALPR is used for road tolls, automatic car washes or paid parking systems, users might try to avoid paying by altering or exchanging license plates. Stolen vehicles might also have their license plates changed. When using multiple analytics in concert, the resulting solution could match and verify plate numbers with other characteristics of the vehicle, such as type and color, through queries of previously stored values or vehicle registration databases.

The new SentiVeillance is designed to run on multi-core processors for fast performance and can process video data from multiple cameras simultaneously using a common PC (current generation i7 CPU with 8 or more cores) and can utilize multiple graphics processing units (GPUs) to achieve even better performance. It can be used with large surveillance systems, incorporating many cameras and data-processing nodes. Developers have many and varied options in the creation of scalable, cost-effective solutions for their customers.

THERMAL FACES SAMPLEThe new SentiVeillance SDK package contains a precompiled sample with source codes and device integration for the Mobotix m16 camera with thermal sensor. It shows functionality for face tracking, mask estimation and temperature readings, and it allows the setting of temperature thresholds or estimating deviations from averages. The sample is created to help with automatic entrance control.

Neurotechnology has released the latest version of its SentiVeillance software development kit. SentiVeillance 8.0 will enhance the utility of the computer vision platform for people who are wearing masks, and will also improve its performance with license plates and vehicles.

The SDK provides customers with a full suite of computer vision applications, including facial recognition and license plate detection. The upgrades will allow the platform to identify covered faces during the COVID-19 pandemic. It can also determine whether or not someone is wearing mask to make sure people are complying with public safety guidelines. The solution can be used for surveillance and access control, and can read attributes like gender and age while simultaneously tracking someones movements through a large space.

The updated vehicle features will provide similar tracking capabilities for cars. SentiVeillance 8.0 is able to identify the make and model of a car, and can estimate other details like paint color and the direction a vehicle (or a pedestrian) was headed when it left the cameras field of view. The idea of a surgeon implanting electrodes deep into your brain or of a computer reading your thoughts may seem like something out of science fiction. But such technologies are increasingly part of our everyday reality and, while they raise moral and ethical questions, they offer hope to many with disabilities and neurological disorders.

Electrodes in the brain have been used to treat several debilitating illnesses, including Parkinsons disease and severe depression. And researchers are experimenting with brain-computer interfaces that could make it possible for people who have lost the ability to move to communicate with others and operate assistive devices, such as wheelchairs.

Updated Version of MegaMatcher 12 Features Improved Biometric Algorithms – findBIOMETRICS

Neurotechnology has updated its flagship MegaMatcher 12 portfolio. MegaMatcher 12 debuted in September, providing interested customers with improved versions of all of the companys biometric algorithms.

MegaMatcher 12.1 builds on that foundation, and introduces a slew of new features. Most notably, Neurotechnology has bolstered its facial recognition algorithm with single frame liveness detection and enhanced blink detection. It has also improved its mask detection capabilities, allowing the platform to do a better job of recognizing people with covered faces.

The fingerprint algorithm now offers better fingerprint segmentation, and gives users access to a special mode to enable matching in cases in which a fingerprint record does not have the proper resolution. Meanwhile, MegaMatcher 12.1 will run better on Android, iOS and Linux ARMplatforms thanks to its upgraded face, fingerprint, and iris template extraction tech.

Finally, MegaMatcher 12.1 will offer support for the WebP image format, and will allow customers to use NBiometricClient to connect to the MegaMatcher ABIS. Doing so will make it easier to migrate applications that were originally designed to function at the local level.

MegaMatcher 12.1 arrives on the heels of SentiVeillance 8.0. The latest iteration of the Neurotechnology computer vision platform can detect masks, and can track the movements of people and vehicles through a larger space.

New Technology Promises to Restore Movement in Paralyzed Arms – UPMC

In a paper published today in Nature Communications, Dr. Marco Capogrosso, assistant professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, proposed a new technology to improve arm and hand movements in individuals with arm paralysis due to spinal cord injury, stroke or other movement disorders.

In collaboration with colleagues in Switzerland, Capogrosso and his team combined physics simulations with experiments in macaque monkeys and humans to demonstrate that epidural electrical stimulation of specific regions in the spinal cord can be used to activate arm and hand muscles.

This work is very important for clinical applications, said Capogrosso, senior author of the paper, who is also part of the Pitt Rehab Neural Engineering Labs. To design effective therapies for paralysis, we need to selectively engage hand and arm muscles by providing the surviving neural circuits with appropriate electrical signals. In practice, this means that we need to know where to implant electrodes and how to design them and our work provides guidance to that.

Epidural stimulation is a neurotechnology that is used to treat pain caused by damage or injury to the nerves in thousands of patients every year. For this procedure, a surgeon implants a small neurostimulation device consisting of thin electrode wires over the spinal cords protective coating. When the device is turned on, it can send electric signals to the damaged nerve fibers and stimulate them, restoring the spinal circuits and dampening the feeling of pain after the injury.

However, modern spinal cord stimulators are not intended to target the cervical neural circuits necessary for arm and hand movement. Therefore, the scientists proposed and tested a modified design of multi-electrode spinal implants that were fitted to monkeys spinal cord dimensions.

To determine the optimal placement of electrodes in the cervical spinal cord where neural circuits that control arm movements are located researchers used insights from in silico, or computer, experiments and reproduced them in monkeys. Combining computer simulation with animal studies allowed researchers to reduce the number of animals needed to collect meaningful data as part of an effort called the Three Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement) that strives to minimize the use of animals in research. And, because the monkeys cervical spine is anatomically and functionally similar to the humans, scientists were able to approximate the arm and hand movement in people very closely.

I think our graduate students Nathan Greiner, Beatrice Barra and the other members of the team did great work in building up from basic science concepts to design this practical technology while minimizing the number of animals used in this research, added Capogrosso.

However, there is still significant work to do to optimize this technology for use in people.

Capogrosso moved to Pittsburgh in January 2020 and joined the Department of Neurological Surgery to use the impressive resources of UPMC to bring this technology to patients as soon as possible. Thanks to collaborations with neurosurgeons such as Dr. Peter Gerszten, Capogrosso hopes to start testing the implant in patients soon.

Using the tools developed by other researchers, such as Dr. Fang-Cheng Yeh at the Department of Neurological Surgery and Dr. Elvira Pirondini at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, they will use precise MRI imaging to target electrode implantation in humans and reproduce the results obtained in monkeys.

Hopefully, well see the first results in humans in 2021, Capogrosso said.
