By Kate Bartlett

The Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Neuroscience Research Building (CNRB) was dedicated on January 29, 2021. Virtual attendees included more than 850 Caltech leaders, researchers, students, alumni and friends. The 150,000 square-foot luminous copper building contains research and teaching laboratories, a 150-seat lecture hall and a neurotechnology center in which grad students and postdocs can set up complicated experiments requiring system engineering, measurement of behavior, stimuli observation and new software. The expansive windows provide sunlight to the teaching and conference rooms, and the human-focused gathering spaces feature skylights and gardens.

The CNRB houses the Chen Institute of Neuroscience, as well as faculty and researchers from other disciplines; before the completion of the CNRB, neuroscience labs were located primarily in the Beckmann Behavioral Building, Kirchoff Building, Moore Building and Broad Institute. The open design between the second and third floors makes interaction easier and promotes imaginative research, according to David Anderson, Professor of Biology and Director of the Chen Institute.

The Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Institute for Neuroscience at Caltech originally was born from a chance encounter with a news report on the ability to control a robotic arm using only a persons mind. Tianqiao Chan and his wife, Chrissy Luo, created the Institute to allow researchers to jumpstart new projects while the CNRB was under construction.

Caltech researchers probe the circuitry, cells and molecular, chemical and electrical pathways of the brain, pursue the neurological basis of personality, develop new brain imaging technique, map brain circuits, develop neurotechnology to treat brain disorders, investigate social cognition and emotions in humans, and quantify behaviors and correlate them to brain activity.

Viviana Gradinaru, professor of neuroscience and biological engineering and director the Center for Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience, said the Chen Institute is like a trampoline:

In science, we have to make leaps of faith. We have to jump high, and you jump much higher on a trampolineespecially one that has a safety net thats big enough and welcoming of others and other opinions. This is what the Chen family provided us.

Colorado Boulevard.net is your place for enlightening events, informative news and social living for the greater Pasadena area. We strive to inform, educate, and work together to make a better world for all of us, locally and globally.

Mind control comes to VR, letting me explode alien heads with a thought – CNET

Posted: at 7:19 pm

NextMind This story is part of CES, where our editors will bring you the latest news and the hottest gadgets of the entirely virtual CES 2021.

In my Oculus Quest VR headset, I was in a room surrounded by large-brained aliens. Their heads flashed, white and black. I turned to one, staring at it. Soon enough, its head exploded. I looked at the others, making their heads explode. Then I looked at a flashing portal marker across the room and was gone. I did this without eye tracking. A band on the back of my head was sensing my visual cortex with electrodes.

I felt like I was living some sort of real-life virtual version of the David Cronenberg film, Scanners. But in reality, I was trying a neural input device made by NextMind.

The NextMind band, or what it looks like from the side that rests against the back of your head.

Before holiday break, I received a large black box with a small package inside. A black disc, with a headband. The disc was covered in small rubber-footed pads. NextMind's $399 developer kit, announced a year ago at CES 2020, aims at something many companies are striving for: neural inputs. NextMind aims to read a brain's signals to track attention, control objects and maybe even more.

Now playing: Watch this: The future of mind-controlled tech is already here, sort...

14:21

It's hard to understand the real potential and possibilities of neural input technology. Also, many of the startups in this space are doing different things. CTRL-Labs, a neurotechnology company acquired by Facebook in 2019, developed an armband that could send hand and finger inputs. Another company, Mudra, is making a wristband for Apple Watch later this year that also senses neural inputs on the wrist.

I wore an early version of the Mudra Band a year ago, and experienced how it could interpret my finger's movements, and even roughly measure how much pressure I was applying when I squeezed my fingers. Even more weirdly, Mudra's tech can work when you aren't moving your fingers at all. The applications could include assisting people who don't even have hands, like a prosthetic wearable.

NextMind's ambitions look to follow a similar assistive-tech path, while also aiming for a world where neural devices could possibly help improve accuracy with physical inputs -- or combine with a world of other peripherals. Facebook's AR/VR head, Andrew Bosworth, sees neural input tech emerging at Facebook within three to five years, where it could end up being combined with wearable devices like smart glasses.

Attaching the NextMind device onto an Oculus Quest 2 headband.

My NextMind experience has been rough, but also mesmerizing. The dev kit has its own tutorial and included demos that can run on Windows or Mac, plus a Steam VR demo that I played back on the Oculus Quest with a USB-C cable. The compact Bluetooth plastic puck has a headband but can also unclip from that and attach directly onto the back of a VR headset strap with a little effort.

All of NextMind's experiences involve looking at large, subtly flashing areas of your screen, which can be "clicked" by focusing. Or staring. It was hard to tell how to make something activate, and I found myself trying to open my eyes more, or breathe, or concentrate. Eventually, sooner or later, the thing I was looking at would click. Out of a field of five or so on-screen flashing "buttons," this really did know what I was looking at. And again, there was no eye tracking involved at all, this just rested on the back of my head.

Did it make me feel uncomfortable? Uncertain? Oh, yes. And as my kid came in and saw me doing this, and I showed him what I was doing, he was as astonished as if I had performed a magic trick.

NextMind's dev kit isn't meant for consumer devices yet. The Mudra Band, while launching as an Apple Watch accessory via crowdfunding site Indiegogo, is also experimental. I have no doubt we'll see more technology like this. At this year's virtual CES, there was even a "neural mouse" glove that aimed to improve reaction times by sensing click inputs a hair faster than even the physical mouse could receive. I didn't try that glove, but the idea doesn't sound far off from what companies like NextMind are imagining, either.

Entertain your brain with the coolest news from streaming to superheroes, memes to video games.

Right now, neural inputs feel like an imperfect attempt at creating an input, like algorithms searching for a way to do something I'd probably just do with a keyboard, a mouse or touchscreen instead. But, that was how voice recognition felt, once. And hand tracking. Right now, NextMind's demos really do work. I'm just trying to imagine what happens next. Whatever it is, I hope more exploding heads won't be a part of it.

Opportunities of Neurotechnology in Clinical Applications – Medical Tech Outlook

Posted: January 29, 2021 at 11:20 am

Due to advanced neurotechnology, the development of human-machine interfaces and the betterment of the person's cognitive abilities is possible.

FREMONT, CA: Neurotechnology is fascinating as one of its goals is to directly wire up human brains to machines. Fundamental research is run to explore functions of the brain, decipher the neural code, and gets an improved understanding of diseases and disorders. Clinical applications of neurotechnologies provide alternatives to pharmaceutical methods and devices for diseases that have been fatal so far. The rapid development of this industry and the potential to increase human-human human-machine systems' communication abilities and the achievement of the information technology threshold of the scientific and technological progress makes it clear that the next technological revolution will be based on neurotechnology.

Previously, the medical field has focused on the fundamental potentials and perspectives of neurotechnology. However, it should be realized that very different processes have influenced this industry's development, which is still the powerful driver. It is about diagnosing and treating many neurodegenerative diseases, which are presently one of the main causes of deterioration in a person's quality of life. Currently, magnetic resonance imaging is used in many research and medical practices. The MR-image method enables to obtain 3D morphological and functional data at the millimeter and submillimeter levels.

However, the tradition of brain stimulation has more than 100 years of history, although quick development began after the development of imaging technologies. With the accumulation of new data, possibilities have emerged not only for analysis but also for accurate brain stimulation. The question of whether neurotechnologies should be leveraged or not is seamless to answer without putting it into the context of application instanced in the medical and non-medical field. No matter how the answer will be, this answer should not be given without knowledge about the possibilities, challenges, and threats of the technological solutions, without medical knowledge about potential risks, the patients' requirements, and potential alternative options. If everybody contributes their expertise and questions, the picture of neurotechnologies as allowing technology for new treatment options and better quality of life can become true, and patients cannot get fooled by wrong promises.

Neurolief and Sawai Enter into Exclusive Development and Marketing Agreement for Relivion – Business Wire

Posted: at 11:20 am

TAMPA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Neurolief Ltd., a neurotechnology innovator, today announces that it has entered into an exclusive agreement with Sawai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. for the development and marketing of Relivion, a non-invasive digital medical device for migraine and depression, in Japan.

Relivion is a non-invasive brain neuromodulation* device that is placed around the head and delivers unparalleled stimulation to the occipital and trigeminal nerves. This creates a cumulative effect by releasing neurotransmitters in the brainstem and modulating brain networks associated with control of pain and mood. The device is designed to allow patients to use Relivion at home, and share treatment data with their physician, in addition to uploading the data to the cloud database through a dedicated app. It is also designed to self-learn and analyze the treatments using AI technology in order to optimize the treatments for patients according to their symptoms.

*Neuromodulation: A therapeutic technology to modulate neurological activities through the administration of electric/magnetic stimuli or drugs.

With the view to launch Relivion in Japan, submissions to the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) are expected for migraine by 2022 and depression by 2023. If Relivion is approved by the agency, it will be the only brain neuromodulation device available for treatment at home in Japan.

*In Europe, Neurolief obtained the CE Mark certification as a treatment device for migraine and is in preparation for the market launch. In the US, the application was filed to FDA in November 2020 as a 510(K) submission for migraine and is scheduled to be filed for depression by 2022.

By working with Sawai to introduce the Relivion neuromodulation device in Japan for use at home with doctor's supervision, we are widening treatment options for patients who are suffering from either migraine or depression.

Cereset Research Exposes the Secrets of Traumatic Stress Hidden in the Brain – PR Web

Cereset Research shares brain maps of brain functional connectivity laterality in military-related traumatic stress

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (PRWEB) January 27, 2021

HIRREM (the legacy research technology of Cereset - a Brain State Company) was utilized by the Wake Forest School of Medicine to study symptoms of traumatic stress in military personnel before and after use of Cereset (legacy) intervention. (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jon.12825)

Whole brain, resting state magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was done pre- and post- Cereset intervention. Significant effects on brain network connectivity have been previously reported (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jon.12571). For the current study, lateralization of brain connectivity was analyzed. Lateralization here refers to the distribution of brain connections within the right, and left side, or to the opposite side. This is important because common lobes in the right and left hemispheres of the brain execute different functions. Of note for these results, the parasympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system (which we think of as the brake to rest and digest) is managed primarily on the left, and the sympathetic division (which we think of as the gas to go) is driven primarily on the right. Thus, the dominant left is a freeze or numbing response indicator, and in contrast, a dominant right is the fight or flight response indicator.

Asymmetries were identified at baseline, along with changes in lateralization patterns after Cereset. Significant correlations were seen between whole-brain lateralization and symptoms of posttraumatic stress. These findings help to understand the effects of and how best to treat traumatic stress.

The brain is the organ of central command which activates and manages autonomic responses to trauma and stress. Results of this study support the model of bihemispheric autonomic management of traumatic stress (BHAM), proposed by Brain State and Wake Forest 6 years ago (https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2014.00843/full). Regulated connections of the brain appear to be the upstream driver of health and wellbeing. When connections between hemispheres are more balanced, individuals are healthier.

Of note is the basis for this brain movement towards a healthier pattern. Cereset merely reflects the brains own electrical patterns using engineered tones to represent dominant brain frequencies. The client receiving Cereset is comfortably seated in a reclining chair to listen to the brain generated tones or BrainEcho. This supports the brain to relax, to change, and to reset itself to improve balance and symmetry, which is associated with reduced symptoms of traumatic stress.

Many prior clinical studies have demonstrated benefits associated with the use of Cereset for symptoms of insomnia, depression, stress, anxiety, concussion, hot flashes, postural orthostatic tachycardia, and migraine. The current and previous clinical trials also included objective outcome measures such as heart rate variability to demonstrate significant improvement in autonomic function. Symptom benefits were durable for up to 6 months in the current study, and autonomic improvement was durable through the final follow-up visit at 4 months in a placebo-controlled trial for insomnia.

The addition of the MRI lateralization findings reported in this study and the correlation with symptoms not only support the BHAM model but also point to a mechanism of effect for the clinical benefits previously reported with Cereset. Symptoms associated with trauma, stress, and allostatic load now affect a majority of the population. Cereset noninvasively supports the brain to balance and regulate itself with resulting benefits for psychological symptoms of traumatic stress and improved autonomic function.

Funding for this study was provided by:The Susanne Marcus Collins Foundation Inc., Joint Capability Technology Demonstration Program within the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense, US Special Operations Command, and the Wake Forest Clinical and Translational Science Institute.
