Faith Gone Wrong: Bank Employee Steals Client’s Funds To Pay Tithing To AFM Church – iharare.com

Posted: at 1:27 am

Bank Employee Steals Clients Funds To Pay Tithing

One church members devotion and desire to pay tithe has landed him in a sea of trouble after he was arrested for stealing funds from a customers account.

The seemingly devoted bank employee, Kennedy Matimbura, who is employed by the Agribank has since been arrested for siphoning thousands of dollars belonging to a city company Riskev Holiday. Officials of the company were alarmed when they discovered that thousands of dollars had been transferred from their account without their knowledge and filed a police report.

Local publication H-Metro reports that following investigations, the police discovered that Matimbura had transferred $11 000 from Riskev Holidays account to an AFM church bank account. When he was questioned about the transaction, Matimbura revealed that he had transferred the money to the church because he needed to pay his tithing.

Following the revelations, the Riskev Holiday conducted an audit of their bank accounts and discovered more transactions that had occurred without their knowledge and consent. The company discovered that there were three transactions of $83 000, $15 000 and $640 that they have no knowledge of. The company has approached the bank seeking clarification on what happened. The police are also investigating the matter.

In a related case, the police have advised business organizations to regularly reconcile their bank statements to check and detect unauthorized payments due to an increase in cases of card cloning.

Criminal Investigation Department spokesperson Detective Assistant Inspector Portia Chinho told the publication.

Criminals are taking advantage of the uptake of plastic money by business organisations and members of the public to swindle money through card cloning, she said.

Card cloning involves the production of counterfeit bank debit cards by criminals after fraudulently acquiring bank debit/credit card information contained in the magnetic strip of the bank debit card.

Criminals are acquiring bank debit card information through gadgets known as skimmers. These skimmers are able to extract debit card information and the said devices are similar to point of sale machines.

Point of sale machines are a major catalyst and intelligence gathered has pointed out that there is collusion between these cyber criminals and cashiers at shops, liquor outlets and casinos, just to name a few.

Asexual self-cloning ticks that can kill livestock are closing in on Maine – Bangor Daily News

Posted: July 21, 2020 at 11:44 am

Maine tick experts are keeping an eye out for the Asian longhorned tick, a foreign tick species that can reproduce without mating and has been documented as close as Connecticut.

Reported for the first time in the United States in 2017, this tick species has now established populations in at least 12 states, all of which are in the northeastern half of the country.

Its certainly something that is on every tick researchers radar here in the eastern United States, said Griffin Dill, who manages the Tick Lab, located in the new UMaine Cooperative Extension Diagnostic and Research Laboratory in Orono. This species seems to primarily reproduce through parthenogenesis, which makes its ability to increase its population size rapidly an important factor.

Parthenogensis is a form of asexual reproduction in which growth and development of embryos occur without fertilization by sperm. Female Asian longhorned ticks can lay eggs, which will develop and hatch on their own. Because of this, a single female tick can establish a fast-growing population.

The Asian longhorned tick is known to carry and transmit a variety of dangerous diseases in its home range in Asia, but those diseases have yet to be documented in the Asian longhorned tick populations found in the U.S. However, there is a concern that the species could pick up and transmit diseases that already occur in the U.S. in other tick species, such as anaplasmosis, babesiosis and Powassan virus.

There are a couple of pathogens in Asia that they are believed to transmit that are closely related to pathogens we have here, so its possible, said Dill. But from what weve seen so far in other states, [the ticks] risk to humans is thought to be relatively low at the moment. And we havent seen indication that its able to contribute to the transmission of Lyme disease.

In the U.S., East Asia and other areas where this tick has been found, such as New Zealand and Australia, it is considered to be a serious threat to livestock such as cattle and sheep. Major infestations can cause stress on an animal, reducing its growth and production. And in some cases, infestations can kill animals due to blood loss.

From limited studies that have been done on this species, they do seem to prefer feeding on animal hosts as opposed to humans, Dill said.

A new study in the journal Zoonoses and Public Health, published earlier this month, investigates the origin of this tick species and how they are spreading across the country.

Researchers gathered samples of Asian longhorned ticks across the U.S. and internationally, then used gene sequencing to compare various populations. The results indicate that at least three individual ticks from self-cloning populations were somehow transported to the U.S., and this explains why all adult Asian longhorned ticks found in the U.S. so far have been female. With Asian longhorned ticks that reproduce through parthenogenesis, male offspring are rare.

(In Asia, male Asian longhorned ticks do exist in some populations where they participate in reproduction.)

The study also found that these original ticks most likely came from East Asia.

While the first established Asian longhorned tick population in the U.S. was documented in New Jersey in 2017, researchers believe the species had been flying under the radar in the country for several years.

Theres a whole lot we dont know about it, said Chuck Lubelczyk, vector ecologist at Maine Medical Center Research Institute. Right now, the states where its occurring tend to be doing a lot more research on it [than other states], and I think a lot more research is going to be done on it as time goes by. Its a public health issue thats been introduced to the country and we werent really talking about it before it arrived here. We were kind of unprepared for it.

Its believed that the tick species can easily be spread by wildlife, as well as the transportation of livestock and domestic animals, such as dogs.

There are some pretty good regulations in place in terms of livestock transport, Lubelczyk said. But it certainly speaks to people needing to be vigilant about tick control medicines for their dogs and other domestic animals.

In the U.S., Asian longhorned ticks have been collected from deer, dogs, raccoons, cats, opossums and a number of other warm-blooded animals, as well as a variety of birds, according to data collected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Theyve also been found feeding on people.

Because of the wide geographical range that the species already inhabits, Lubelczyk believes it could survive Maines climate, even the states cold winters.

At least in southern Maine, I dont think itd have a problem, Lubelczyk said. How it would do up in northern Maine? I dont have a guess.

Moving forward, tick experts ask that Maine people be on the lookout for this invasive tick species; however, theyre difficult to identify. Adults are plain brown but can look similar to brown dog ticks and rabbit ticks, both of which live in Maine.

Researchers from the Maine Tick Lab and Maine Medical Center Research Institute are looking for Asian longhorned ticks, as well as the lone star tick (which has been found in Maine, but not yet in breeding populations), when conducting on-the-ground tick surveillance throughout the state.

In addition, they receive information about tick populations in Maine from the public sending tick samples to the Maine Tick Lab in Orono. The lab identifies these tick samples for free, and for an additional fee of $15 will test deer ticks for three common diseases they carry: Lyme disease, babesiosis and anaplasmosis. Why we still haven’t cloned humans it’s not just ethics – Business Insider – Business Insider

Posted: July 8, 2020 at 4:02 am

Following is a transcript of the video.

Narrator: We've been able to clone human embryos for about seven years. But as far as we know, no one's actually cloned a whole person. Turns out, ethics aren't the only thing holding scientists back. Cloning isn't the sci-fi marvel we think it is. It can be dangerous, often ineffective, and, most of all, we just haven't thought of a good enough reason to do it. So, here's why you'll probably never have to fight your evil clone.

This is Dolly. Just kidding, that's a regular sheep. This is Dolly, the first mammal cloned successfully from an adult cell. She was born in 1996 after scientists figured out how to remove the DNA from the egg cell of a Scottish Blackface sheep and basically replace it with the DNA of a mammary cell from a Finn Dorset sheep. They gave it a little electric shock to fuse the cell and get it replicating, placed the cells in the uterus of another sheep, and boom, clone. This method, called reproductive cloning, could theoretically be used on humans. But this is a best-case scenario. It took 277 tries for the scientists to get one Dolly. Nowadays, cloning mammals generally has a success rate of about 10% to 20%. Better than one in 277, but still a majorly inefficient process.

Jose Cibelli: Technically, it's not difficult to produce a clone embryo, but human cloning has other hurdles that need to be considered.

Narrator: To even research human cloning, scientists would need to ethically collect a large amount of donated eggs and find enough surrogates to carry them. But even if they made it through that logistical nightmare, the biggest issue is this:

Cibelli: They're gonna hurt the baby, or they're gonna hurt the person carrying the cloned fetus.

Narrator: Across the board, scientists have found that some embryos expire before they're implanted. Others result in miscarriages. And those that make it to term often die soon after birth or end up with severe abnormalities. Simply, these are risks that are easier to take when it comes to experimenting with sheep than with people. But arguably the biggest reason we haven't cloned a human being? There's not a good enough reason to.

In pop culture, cloning is used to bring people back from the dead. But that's not how it works. Cloning someone would only create a twin, not a replica, since identical twins have the same genetics, but not necessarily personalities. And a "Never Let Me Go" scenario, where organs are harvested from clones to save the rich, is not only unethical, but unnecessary. Why clone an entire person when you can just make the part you need? Something, theoretically, therapeutic cloning can solve.

Therapeutic cloning is almost identical to reproductive, except the cloned embryo is never implanted in a uterus. Instead, the embryo is cloned for the sole purpose of extracting stem cells. Stem cells have the incredible ability to turn into any other cell in the human body, which means they're great for developing new treatments for disease and have the potential to repair or regenerate tissues and organs.

But, no surprise, there are a lot of downsides with therapeutic cloning. The thing about stem cells is that they're a pretty limited resource. The most substantial source for embryonic stem cells? Three- to five-day-old embryos, cloned or otherwise. And when someone else's stem cells are transplanted into a patient, the body will sometimes fight them off like a disease. Some researchers believe that cloned stem cells, since they share the patient's DNA, would be less likely to be rejected. But this use case is still in the research stage.

And, finally, therapeutic cloning is an individualized treatment in a world where drug companies are more interested in standardized ones. And there are easier ways to create multipurpose cells nowadays, like the method for creating induced pluripotent stem cells. They're basically adult cells that have been reprogrammed to be a different type of cell.

Cibelli: The problem with therapeutic cloning, of course, is that you need a lab personnel that is qualified to do it, specific equipment to do it. Whereas the other technique, you can just buy a kit and one person can do it in a lab that has some expertise in tissue culture.

Narrator: Cloned cells still have an advantage when it comes to healthier mitochondria and the ability to grow into entire animals, whereas iPSCs often peter out. But since iPSCs safely and reliably do most everything but create entire living animals, why fund the harder, ethically ambiguous thing? So, cloning might actually have a bigger place in movies than it does in real life, because the money just isn't there. And just because we can do something doesn't mean we need to.

Ian: Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.

Abby Tang: So, in the research for this video, I did come across one very interesting tidbit, and that is the announcement of cloned human baby Eve, who was born on December 26, 2002. And the source of this announcement is a company called Clonaid, which was formed in 1997 by the Raelian cult. And they're a cult that believes that humans were cloned from aliens and the only way for us to reach immortality is to clone ourselves. It's been 18 years, and we haven't gotten any proof that baby Eve exists or has ever existed, but the company is still alive and well. So if any proof does come through, we will update you.

MSP Gail Ross victim of online identify theft – Northern Times

Posted: at 4:01 am

NORTH SNP MSP Gail Ross contacted police after finding herself a victim of online identity theft at the weekend.

A fake Facebook Messenger account, shut down on Sunday after being reported, had been communicating with Mrs Ross' constituents and followers and had been pretending to be her.

The cloned account had the same profile image used on the Gail Ross MSP page on Facebook and fooled many into communicating confidential details in the online chat box.

Mrs Ross said on Monday afternoon: The fact that someone has taken the time to set up a fake Messenger account in my name is bad enough, that they have actually been contacting people and pretending to be me is appalling.

"Being an elected member carries a huge amount of trust and I deal with lots of confidential information on a daily basis."

She said that some of the messages that people had received from the fraudster had made her "very worried".

"The thought of this person pretending to be me makes me feel sick and very angry."

On Monday morning, Mrs Ross contacted the Scottish Parliament security office along with Police Scotland who, she claims, are taking the matter "very seriously".

"Hopefully they can work with Facebook to find the person behind this.

"No one should have to endure this but to target vulnerable people in this way is sickening and I am horrified that there are people out there that may think this is me.

Mrs Ross received numerous supportive comments on her public profile account on Facebook on Sunday.

One "particularly vulnerable person" related to the MSP how they had given their private phone number to the scammer.

Mrs Ross said she is very concerned at what information may have been given out by her followers before the fake account was suspended.

"This wasn't random, the person was actively pretending to be me and sending messages to the followers of my MSP account."

Facebook account cloning is a simple scam but it can be easy to be fooled by it.

A cloned account is a copy that uses your profile photo and other public information to trick your friends into giving up their information.

It may seemlike a harmless prank, but these clones can cause real damage.

A cloned account may convince your friends to send them money, collect passwords or other information or dupe them into other scams.

If anyone has received a message from the fake account could they please take a screenshot and email it to Mrs Ross at: Gail.ross.msp@parliament.scot

It’s Time to Rethink How You Handle Cloning Out Distractions – Fstoppers

Posted: July 5, 2020 at 9:57 am

Whether youve worked with Photoshop for years, or are new to the program and want an updated approach to cloning, healing, and editing out distractions and issues, theres been a number of updates that have challenged the old paradigm of editing in these situations. Want to know the new approach you should be using?

When I got started with Photoshop, and had to deal with removing an element of an image, Id reach for either the clone stamp or healing brush tool. Both were fine, but required a good sense of how to rebuild the areas, if you were removing a sizable chunk of the photo. For this next section, when I refer to cloning, you can consider healing and cloning to both run into the same issues, at least to some extent.

Beyond just size, theres a number of complicating factors that can make these tools more difficult to use than necessary. Consider an object against a pattern background, where youll have to pay attention to matching the orientation and periodicity of the pattern itself, rather than just cloning over it with a random sample. Another example is when cloning up against the border of two different objects, especially where theres a defined edge. Working near that edge with a healing brush can result in a blurry mess, instead of a clean replacement.

To work around these challenges, Photoshop has added a number of tools that I dont think get enough attention for this part of the workflow. Furthermore, there are a number of optimizations to how you work with the existing tools that can help address these issues.

The first change Id recommend making is altering how you approach editing out a distraction in the first place. Instead of reaching for a brush of any type or the patch tool, grab the lasso tool. Combined with content aware fill, I find it much easier to make selections quickly, hit my reassigned shortcut for fill (faster than Edit> Fill), and end up with a great looking result for basic adjustments.

I like this better than the brush approach because of how well it leads into making adjustments to the area being fixed. If I need to end up selecting more of a region, like if theres a color cast spilling onto the background, its easy to add to the selection. If Im removing too much, just by holding Alt, I can quickly remove something from the selection. In the very rare cases where Photoshop isnt automatically selecting a good patch to fill with, its easy to jump into the dedicated Content Aware Fill dialog, as your selection is already set up.

This approach isnt just good for its versatility, but also because it is very low effort. Draw a sloppy circle around what you want gone and it vanishes. Content Aware Fill seems to do a remarkable job of leaving things alone that dont need to be removed, even if its in the active selection, unlike when you draw outside the area with the spot healing brush.

Furthermore, Photoshop offers a ton of options for making an easy, effective selection, making this approach even easier. A great example of this is when working with a panorama. After stitching, you can end up with small gaps around the edges of the frame, where the stitch hasnt resulted in a perfectly rectangular image. To fill these in with a brush-based approach would require a detailed examination of the edges of the frame and painstaking work to brush in only the necessary regions. Instead, by selecting all the content on the layer, inverting the selection, and expanding it by a few pixels, you can quickly fill all these gaps automatically. Ive even loaded that process into an action, taking what would have been minutes of work into about 5 seconds and 2 clicks.

To sum it up, when working with an easy, or even intermediate issue, Ive left the myriad healing and cloning brushes in the toolbar, instead relying on sloppy selections and Content Aware fill via both the fill menu and dedicated dialog. Its saved a lot of effort, and can easily be stepped up to deal with more difficult cases.

Unfortunately, Content Awares AI isnt at Skynet levels just yet, For some areas, its still necessary to go in and manually clone out the region. This is most noticeable in the cases I mentioned earlier in the article, with regular patterns and some literal edge cases. Here, however, I still dont leave the selection tools behind.

Making a selection before working with cloning tools can be one of the best ways to refine your approach. One of the easiest examples of this is when working with something that comes up to an edge of another object. In these three shots, you can see the initial issue, the selection, and the finished product. By going in with just the regular clone stamp, you can build in some margin around that white pillar, while still keeping a very clean edge on the object. Once thats done, you can then use any tool, like the healing brush, to go in and finish the job, as well as refine the transition.

Trying to mirror that rounded edge with a single brush stroke is way more difficult than it needs to be. Setting up the selection ahead of time functions a bit like the bumper guards in bowling, where even a mistake doesnt ruin your attempt.

Setting up this perimeteralso leads into my next bit of advice, which is dont be afraid of the clone stamp. While the initial strokes can look worse than using the healing brush or spot healing brush, I find that for larger areas, you can never get the healing brush to look just right without first removing the offending object via another method. Healing over a large area can just result in a smudgy mess, often with color artifacts from the removed object. Instead, give a couple swipes of the clone stamp to at least get the area into a more neutral starting position, then refine with the healing tools if necessary.

One last thing to remember is the clone source panel. If youre working with an offset pattern, or dont have a great 1:1 match for cloning, you can use the clone source panel to expand your options. In the panel, you can adjust the rotation of your clone source to better match your subject, increase or decrease the scaling ratio, or even mirror it. By playing around with these settings, you can get a far more convincing blendor even create a usable source out of an otherwise dissimilar area.

None of these features are that new, with content aware fill being around for years already, for example. Instead, the iterative improvements of content aware fill, combined with some new techniques Ive integrated into my workflow, have led me to realize that I hardly even touch the old standards of cloning work anymore. As content aware fill continues to improve, Ive had to do less and less manual refinement. Id suggest you see how it fits into your workflow, as well as understand the cases where it isnt going to be useful, and how to compensate it might just save you quite a bit of time in your next edit!
