Twitter suspends Babylon Bee over Rachel Levine ‘Man of the Year’ title

Posted: December 23, 2022 at 10:55 am

Twitter locked the account of a right-leaning parody site, The Babylon Bee, after it awarded Rachel Levine, the transgender Biden administration official, the title of man of the year.

The Babylon Bee story was a reaction to USA Todays naming of Levine, who is US assistant secretary for health for the US Department of Health and Human Services, as one of its women of the year last week.

Twitter says it will restore the account, which has more than 1.3 million followers, if the Bee deletes the tweet, but CEO Seth Dillon says he has no intention of doing so.

Were not deleting anything, Dillon tweeted from his personal account. Truth is not hate speech. If the cost of telling the truth is the loss of our Twitter account, then so be it.

The banned article notes that Levine serves proudly as the first man in that position to dress like a western cultural stereotype of a woman. He is also an admiral in theUS Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. What a boss!

He often wears a dress, which some people think is weird but he doesnt care one bit, the article continues. Come on! Men in India wear dress-type garments, dont they?

Dillon tweeted news of the suspension from his own account, attaching a screenshot of the notice from Twitter.

Twitter cited its policy on hateful conduct, which states: You may not promote violence against, threaten, or harass other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease.

The account you referenced as been temporarily blocked for violating ourhateful conduct policy, a Twitter spokesperson said.

The account owner is required to delete theviolative Tweetbefore regaining access to their account.

Summer Olympics 2024: Men will be able to compete in artistic swimming …

Posted: at 10:51 am

For the first time in Olympic history, men will be allowed to compete in artistic swimming at the 2024 Paris Olympics, according to an announcement from World Aquatics on Thursday.

International Olympic Committee approval means that there are a maximum of two men that can be selected among the eight athletes on each team event. Artistic swimming, which was formerly known as synchronized swimming until 2017, will include 10 countries.

Artistic swimming has been an Olympic event since the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles. Men being added to the sport makes rhythmic gymnastics the only women-only event that the Summer Games have to offer.

"Aquatics sports are universal and men have proven themselves to be excellent artistic swimmers," World Aquatics president Husain Al-Musallam said in a statement.

Since 2015, men have competed in artistic swimming events at the FINA World Aquatics Championships. At the inaugural mixed duet event in Kazan Russia in 2015, Bill May and Christina Jones of the United States won the gold medal.

"The inclusion of men in Olympic Artistic Swimming was once considered the impossible dream," May said. "This proves that we should all dream big. The male athletes have endured. Now, through their perseverance and the help and support of so many, all athletes may stand alongside each other equally, reaching for Olympic glory."

During the 2022 world championships in Budapest, the mixed duet ended up being won by Giorgio Minisini and Lucrezia Ruggiero of Italy in a event that was participated in by 13 countries.

The Paris Summer Games are scheduled to take place from July 26 until Aug. 11, 2024.

Olympic artistic swimming open to men for first time in 2024

Posted: at 10:51 am

Men are eligible for Olympic artistic swimming for the first time at the 2024 Paris Games, the IOC confirmed Thursday.

Up to two men per country will be allowed in the eight-person team event, though nations may still elect to send all-woman teams.

Artistic swimming, formerly known as synchronized swimming, has been on the Olympic program since 1984.

The inclusion of men in Olympic artistic swimming was once considered the impossible dream, 43-year-old American Bill May, considered a pioneer in mens artistic swimming, said in a press release. This proves that we should all dream big. The male athletes have endured. Now, through their perseverance and the help and support of so many, all athletes may stand alongside each other equally, reaching for Olympic glory.

In October, World Aquatics, the international governing body for swimming events, amendedits rulesto allow up to two men per country in the artistic team event at competitions including the Olympics.

But it still needed IOC approval to change the previously published rules for the 2024 Paris Games.

The IOC said in November that it was working with World Aquatics to understand their long term development plans for the integration of men into artistic swimming, and the opportunities that may exist for men to compete in artistic swimming at the Olympic Games.

On Thursday, the IOC said in a statement, The Olympic Programme Commission has reviewed the World Aquatics (formerly FINA) rule change for Artistic Swimming and confirmed that the event would be listed as Open for Paris 2024.

Rhythmic gymnastics is now the lone discipline that is not open to men at the Olympics. Nordic combined, a Winter Games event, is the lone sport that is not open to women at the Olympics.

Since 2015, the world championships in artistic swimming have included a mixed duet with one male swimmer and female swimmer, an event that is not on the Olympic program.

U.S. artistic swimming head coachAndrea Fuentes said this fall that she was looking forward to having men in her athlete pool for the team event.

We have males ready to swim, but there are other countries who have not, Fuentes said, adding that she will decide whether to enter men in upcoming team competitions to test them out. I want inclusion. If I have the opportunity to do it, I will for sure use it.

The current U.S. national teamincludes 25 athletes: 24 women and one man:Kenny Gaudet, an 18-year-old from Lakeland, Florida, recently highlighted by theLos Angeles Times. Gaudet has competed in solo and duet events, plus is part of the U.S. team in the acrobatic routine that World Aquatics announced last month will be added to the Olympic event for Paris.

May, who last competed in 2021 and now coaches the Santa Clara Aquamaids program in California, said he learned of male Olympic inclusion via text message from a World Aquatics artistic swimming official on Oct. 20. May described his reaction as an explosion. Not just for me. For the sport.

The U.S. still must qualify for the 10-nation 2024 Olympic team event. It failed to reach the last three Olympics. It missed the Tokyo Games by one spot and .2108 of a point in a last-chance qualifier.

At this past summers world championships, the U.S. placed sixth in the technical routine, ninth in the free routine and fifth in the highlight (acrobatic) routine, the three events that will make up future Olympic competition. That was its best combined result at a worlds since 2007, the last year it qualified for the Olympic team event.

For 2024, the winner of the 2023 Pan American Games qualifies for the Olympics. The U.S. is expected to contend with Canada and Mexico for that spot.

If the U.S. does not win Pan Ams, its last shot to qualify will be the February 2024 World Championships. The top five nations among those not already qualified via continental championships will round out the 10-nation Olympic field.

Drake: Model-Based Design and Verification for Robotics

Posted: at 10:44 am

Drake (dragon in Middle English) is a C++ toolbox started by theRobot Locomotion Group at the MITComputer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL). Thedevelopment team has now grown significantly, with coredevelopment led by the Toyota Research Institute. Itis a collection of tools for analyzing the dynamics of our robots and buildingcontrol systems for them, with a heavy emphasis on optimization-baseddesign/analysis.

While there are an increasing number of simulation tools available forrobotics, most of them function like a black box: commands go in, sensors comeout. Drake aims to simulate even very complex dynamics of robots (e.g.including friction, contact, aerodynamics, ), but always with an emphasis onexposing the structure in the governing equations (sparsity, analyticalgradients, polynomial structure, uncertainty quantification, ) and making thisinformation available for advanced planning, control, and analysis algorithms.Drake provides an interface to Python to enable rapid-prototyping of newalgorithms, and also aims to provide solid open-source implementations for manystate-of-the-art algorithms. Finally, we hope Drake provides many compellingexamples that can help people get started and provide much needed benchmarks. We are excited to accept user contributions to improve the coverage.

You can read more about the vision for Drake in this blogpost.

We hope you find this tool useful. Please seeGetting Help if you wish to share your comments, questions, success stories, or frustrations. And please contribute your bestbug fixes, features, and examples!
