Reversing the negative trends in the rule of law across the EU passes through civil society – Marketscreener.com

Posted: at 10:38 pm

The conference on Fundamental Rights and Rule of Law held by the European Economic and Social Committee brought into light serious violations and negative trends in the four areas covered by the European Rule of Law Mechanism (justice, corruption, media, checks and balances). The EESC stressed that civil society is a dynamic actor in defending this fundamental principle of the EU.

The conference entitled Civil society perspectives on the European Rule of Law Mechanism organised by the EESC's Fundamental Rights and Rule of Law (FRRL) Group, was held on 4 November. It offered space for dialogue amongst stakeholders which contributed to the FRRL Group country visits carried out in 2020-2021 and to the first two Rule of Law Reports published by the European Commission.

The president of the EESC's FRRL Group Cristian Prvulescu, underlined the role of civil society: We do not turn to the representatives of civil society for the 'sake of the principle', we listen to civil society because its contribution is essential to these crucial issues.

The EESC has played its part by adopting a number of opinions, hearings and country visit reportsin the last two years, in its effort to contribute to a "joint culture of the rule of law" called for by the Commission.

Along the same lines, Giulia Barbucci, EESC's Vice-President, affirmed that reversing current negative trends in in the protection of the rule of law passed through civil society: EU legal and political responses cannot stand alone. We must also better engage civil society actors as they are the bridge between the expectations of the general population and institutions.

Nevertheless, there is still a lot to be done and a long way to go as Matthew Caruana Galizia, from the Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation, said. His mother, Daphne Caruana Galizia, a Maltese journalist, was murdered while investigating corruption, money laundering and organised crime. My mother is unfortunately a good example of how failings in the rule of law and widespread corruption are not victimless crimes, the murder shutters that perception into thousand pieces.

After more detailed discussions of the four pillars of the European Rule of Law Mechanisms in parallel sessions, participants reconvened to discuss the lessons learned and future perspectives. There was agreement that the rule of law was vital for the functioning of the EU as a whole, including for its credibility, resilience and mutual trust.

As Debbie Kohner, from the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI), summed up, all four pillars covered by the European Rule of Law Mechanism - justice system, media freedom and pluralism, anti-corruption frameworks, and other checks and balances - are intertwined. National Human Rights Institutions monitor trends and show how an erosion of standards in one area creates a deterioration in the other.

Calling for a strong action as he concluded the event, Cristian Prvulescu, said: The attack on the rule of law and fundamental rights was initially an attack on human rights and then became an attack on NGOs. Finally, it became an attack on institutions of the rule of law and on democracy itself.

The EESC's FRRL Group will continue to advocate for fundamental rights and rule of law by taking action in cooperation with civil societies in all Member States, notably through country visits and their subsequent country visit reports.

The FRRL Group was created in 2018 as a horizontal body within the European Economic and Social Committee, to enhance the contribution of organised civil society to strengthening fundamental rights, democracy and the rule of law and responding to the shrinking civic space for civil society organisations.

The conference is the second organised by the FRRL group and follows on from a similar event held in 2019 at which participants discussed Trends in the EU from a civil society perspective. The results of the discussions fed into the first synthesis reportissued by the FRRL Group in June 2020, which highlighted trends in the EU based on the first seven country visits led by the Group.

From ‘shattered career’ to top of the world: How superstar Kiwi jockey bounced back – New Zealand Herald

Verry Elleegant ridden by James McDonald wins the 2021 Lexus Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse. Video / Trackside

In his darkest hour superstar New Zealand jockey James McDonald made a promise to himself.

Yesterday, at Flemington, his equine sweetheart Verry Elleegant helped him keep that pledge in a dazzling Kiwi domination of the A$8 million Melbourne Cup.

The former South Auckland-trained mare swept past hot favourite Incentivise at the Flemington 200m for a breathtakingly easy victory to put a A$4.4m exclamation mark on her remarkable career.

Trained by ex-pat Kiwi Chris Waller, Verry Elleegant had plenty doubting her champion status after two recent defeats but now the winner of Australia's iconic staying double, the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups as well as almost A$14.3m nobody is doubting her any more.

But horses don't care what people say, they can't read.

McDonald can and his Christmas present in 2016 was more doubters, more criticism, that any then 24-year-old should have to endure.

The wonder kid of Australian racing was disqualified for 18 months for profiting from a $1000 bet somebody else placed on Astern, a horse he rode to win.

It is the most victimless of crimes, not even disallowed in some forms of racing, but it came with a mandatory 18-month ban. McDonald's career was shattered and plenty of pundits piled in.

The critics said he would get too fat, as he already has some struggles with weight. He was never welcomed back by global super power Godolphin, his then bosses, and some thought he had become a cautionary tale.

McDonald didn't doubt.

In that darkest hour as he drove away from the hearing that could have destroyed a young man's life he rang those he trusted. Those who had had their backs to the wall, his own collection of fallen angels.

They told him what McDonald knew but any young man staring into a career abyss wants to hear: You will be okay. Come back better. Come back and win the Melbourne Cup.

The last one stuck. A goal, a tangible thing, a prize to be chased that one day McDonald could claim. A giant, gold redemption token with the racing world watching.

So on that December day McDonald promised himself to win the Melbourne Cup. Of course all jockeys want to, and some even dream of winning THE race.

But McDonald, the happy little Waikato magician, promised himself.

He swallowed his medicine and remarkably didn't become sour or blame others. He spent his time wisely, losing his riding gear, discovering the world.

He became a more well-rounded young man, living proof that maybe everybody in horse racing should be forced from its fishbowl in their 20s to gain perspective.

Since has returned to race riding in May 2018, he has gone to the next level, his own level.

More focused, more business but still laughing, his weight more under control. As for Godolphin, these days they are lucky to get him because everybody wants the comeback kid.

J-mac has gone from being one of the best jockeys in Australia to the best jockey in Australia. Some title.

Three weeks ago he won the A$15m Everest, the flashiest and richest race in his home town of Sydney and on his track. It doesn't get any bigger, does it?It does if you made yourself a promise on your darkest day. Keeping that promise closes the circle.

Ironically J-mac wasn't even set to ride Verry Elleegant until last Saturday because while he is her regular New South Wales rider another hoop was committed to her for the spring because McDonald thought he would be trapped in NSW by Covid.

But plans changed, state borders came down, racing plans changed and as fate would have it McDonald, who obliterated the record books with four winners on Derby Day, found out that day he and Verry Elleegant would be a couple again in the Melbourne Cup.After that barrier 18 didn't matter. The firm track didn't matter.

That promise had to be kept and when it was McDonald screamed into his hand in a private moment watched by millions. Job done.

Oak Grove Racing & Gaming: How their historical horse racing machines work

They may look like slot machines, but they're actually historical horse racing machines. Here's the difference.

Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle

HAMPTON Ocean Gaming is looking to expand from its second-floor charitable gaming room into the former ice cream shop downstairs, bringing more games as well as the addition of historic horse racing.

Owner Anthony Fusco said he still needs to finish his permitting process with the town before he can knock down the back wall of the old ice cream store space, its tenant having moved up the street. His hope is to complete that process in time to start construction this winter.

Weve got proper steps to do before this is written in stone, Fusco said. My goal is to be ready by February.

'Vaccinated and horny': Chelsea Handler talks new beau, upcoming show at Hampton Beach

The ice cream shop is on the other side of the wall from a downstairs gaming room Fusco added to Ocean Gaming three years ago, previously only having an upstairs gaming room.

Ocean Gaming offers table games such as blackjack, roulette and craps, as well as Lucky 7 ticket dispensers. Fusco said the plan is for the wall separating the old ice cream space to be replaced with open space and cages where people can redeem their chips and vouchers. The new space will also feature bingo.

'Going to be good': Pink Hippo Caf to serve Congdon's Doughnuts, more at Mall at Fox Run

The addition of historic horse racing comes after that game wasapproved by the state Legislature in June to be added to charitable gaming rooms in New Hampshire. The game has players bet on footage of races that have already occurred, with key information kept from players so they dont know the outcome.

The game will be the first electronic gaming to be introduced in New Hampshire, according to Rick Newman, a lobbyist who works on gaming issues in the state. He said lawmakers were convinced this year that more gambling customers would choose New Hampshires charitable gaming rooms over casinos in other states if they offered an electronic gaming option.

That was what really drove us to ask the Legislature to allow historic horse racing, so that we would have an electronic game to offer, Newman said.

New Hampshire only allows gambling in the form of charitable gaming, which requires 35% of proceeds go to local charities. Fusco said Ocean Gaming has produced $4.2million in donations to charities in its 10-year existence at Hampton Beach. One charity, the American Legion Post 35 in Hampton, received nearly $50,000over the last year from Ocean Gaming. Post 35 Commander Berkley Bennett said the money is used for local school scholarships and awards.

It also helps keep the lights on for us at the post, Bennett said.

Bennett said it's difficult for Post 35 to make money given they lack a bar that many posts run. He said any growth at charitable gaming rooms like Ocean Gaming meansmore help for organizations like the Post 35.

Were always hustling, Bennett said. This was a godsend for us.

Fusco has been working in gaming for 45 years, first in Las Vegas at age 25 before going to work at Foxwoods for 20 years. Having roots in Springfield, Massachusetts, he said coming to Hampton Beach was a like a different world he has come to love for its vacation community. Fusco said he likes the states charitable gaming system in that it is profitable for operators like himself, as well as that it keeps more money in New Hampshire for those in need.

When I first started this, it was a business decision, Fusco said. As I started working with the charities, its more than that.

What is politically correct language? | EHLION

Posted: at 10:34 pm

Introduction

In recent years and decades, weve been paying more attention to our words. Society in general has been moving towards non-discriminatory language.

How did this come about? Why do we consider some words more ethic than others? What does this mean in our everyday life? How has this influenced translators?

Read on for a list of day to day examples in personal life and the workplace as well as in social life.

The definition of politically correct language (abbreviated to PC) is choosing and using words that focus on empathy, fairness and justice. Word and phrases that have been accepted and entered into our day to day vocabulary that enhance the inclusion of individuals or groups of people, usually found in minorities in our societies and communities.

Therefore, it is both an active behaviour as well as an intentional avoidance of using words and expressions which could imply a sense of exclusion and marginalization of people who are considered to be socially disadvantaged or discriminated against.

Words that were commonly used in the past are nowadays completely out. Different organizations and authorities have also come up with language, policies, and measures that are considered as alternatives to old-fashioned words, pushing out language discrimination and always adding to the ever-growing politically correct language list.

Politically correct language is based on the idea behind the belief that words shape our reality and so the philosophy of language behind it gives weight to words.

On a general note, to be politically correct you need to avoid using:

See examples of all the above in our downloadable list here

The aim of politically correct language revolves around empathy, fairness and justice.

In many countries it has become a legal requirement to use certain alternatives to words or phrases that have been declared derogatory.

Political correctness the politics of culture and language emerged in Western societies around the 1970s through what seemed a self-parody by activists of a good number of new social movements. It all started with the English translation of Chinese Communist texts, in particular the Cultural Revolution, which was seen as the correct line, or even ideologically sound.

By time, as we walked through the 2000s, this higher sensitivity towards disadvantages of minorities in our society has been given ample attention by significant and influential authorities that have demanded that politically correct language for disabilities, for example, is made part of legislations.

By now, politically correct language has been embedded in everyday words and expressions. We have all become much more aware of what is politically correct language, even when were doing something as relaxing as socializing with friends.

While it was okay to ask someone if they were married or if they had a boyfriend or a girlfriend in the past, we now refer to their significant other as their partner. Apart from opting for gender-neutral language which avoids the implication of sexual orientation, the word partner also moves away from discussing if the person decided to get married or not. Heres a glossary of Terms about Sexuality.

When we are discussing other social situations such as homelessness, we no longer use the homeless. This term conveys generalization of all the different persons who are homeless at present. By using this term, we are prioritizing that they are persons first and foremost, who are homeless right now. Another way of making this clearer is by saying persons experiencing homelessness;

Politically correct language is such a complexity of underlying accepted manners or unacceptable behaviour or choice of words that sometimes the same word can be deemed correct or derogatory, depending on the tone of voice or facial expression a person uses when saying the word.

This is why, at EHLION we make sure that copy editing and professional translation services that work on content for your company are in the loop of what is culturally accepted in your target market.

Contact us today for a free consultation of how we can make your site, services and products politically correct.

Say Im describing a person. If I say someone is a Chinese, it is perceived that I am implying that he is one of the many migrants, generalizing all of the individuals having those origins and removing merit to their personal situation nowadays. However, if I say someone is Chinese, this is deemed to be politically correct as Im describing their origin.

Whats more it is socially expected to try and swerve away from generic terms like Asian.

Lets have a look at the size of Asia in comparison to the whole world map.

Therefore by saying someone is Asian, it seems impersonal and uninterested. The politically correct way to do it is to be as specific as possible. Are they Indian? Bengali? Thai? Khmei?

Make sure you avoid these politically incorrect gaffes with our Cross Cultural Training.

When dealing with multicultural workplaces and business clients the mist of what is politically correct and what isnt gets thicker and can make or break deals.

In Japan for instance, business etiquette has a name Omotenashi.

In China, Guanxi is a complex and powerful concept in the business culture and forms an integral part of negotiations and behaviour in general when dealing with Chinese companies in which hierarchy is absolute key.

On the other hand Swedish culture and customs are so much more laid back.

This is why we at EHLION offer Cross Cultural Training with experts that can guide you into a smooth interaction when dealing with colleagues, business partners or clients.

Opponents of politically correct language claim that substituting what are considered hurtful or offensive words by their alternatives trending at the moment, doesnt lead to anything as they are still focusing on that supposedly wrong, offensive or harmful title. Ben ONeill has claimed that politically correct language is useless as long as the social stigma is still real in our societies.

Others on this side of the spectrum, argue that politically correct language is selective on who or what group deserves more respect.

Supporters of politically correct language have claimed that its use by the grand majority of society, including entertainment outlets such as parks, restaurants and venues but also in schools and workplaces have most certainly brought more awareness to making all citizens feel included and respected. PC has made and keeps making the rules clear on what is acceptable and what isnt.

A lot of spokespersons for minority groups emphasize how this has, although not mitigated the disadvantages, made it okay to demand respect and in the case of abuse or misuse of language, being backed by the legislations around what is politically correct language has made them feel more secure in their everyday life.

In the translation profession, words are what stones are for a builder.

Lets think of the story of The Three Little Pigs for a moment. Depending on what words you use, you can have a hay house, a wooden house or a brick house.

If the translator picks a poor choice of words, the quality of the content will be as strong as the hay house. An improved choice of words will turn your content into a wooden house, while a professional who is aware of political correctness specific for the region for which you are preparing the content, will lead to the very successful and sturdy brick house.

The choice of words can absolutely and directly influence your sales or business negotiations.

Wouldnt it be handy to have a list of politically correct language examples and examples of politically correct expressions?

Weve done just that for you, here is a politically correct language list with 40 alternatives to politically incorrect words and phrases.

Here is a politically correct language pdf of 40 alternatives to terms that are no longer in use, for you to download:

Rules and trends that define politically incorrect language seem to change faster as time goes by and people are more open about what they consider to be offensive to them and what they deem acceptable.

Discover 100 Politically Correct words and phrases

Posted: at 10:34 pm

The Mainstream Media (MSM) habit of using politically correct words and phrases is an attempt to control the way people think.

The control of language is an essential policy in the establishment of a totalitarian society.

I have been following media reports about the situation in Syria and have become increasingly annoyed about the editorial style of reporting events.

What do I mean by this?

Well, I want to know what is happening in Syria but Im getting biased reports from news channels and reporters.

Every story seems to be an editorial.

In other words, journalists insist on putting their own spin on the story.

By selecting certain adjectives and using other literary tools, the author manipulates the reader.

Consider these phrases which the MSM use all the time:

Notice the use of the word regime instead of government.

Also, see how the MSM describes terrorists as protesters and rebels.

Left-wingers use politically correct words and phrases because they believe that words such as Christmas and manpower might offend some people.

However, its much more than that; political correctness is used as a form of mind control.

The phrase best man for the job is now politically incorrect; its now best person for the job.

Some words have not been replaced but have taken on a new meaning.

For example, the word fascist now means anyone who disagrees with the far-left.

Furthermore, the word dictator now means any leader who does not agree with the UK government.

Britons have been gagged by political correctness.

The British National Party believes in freedom of speech and also believes that criticism and dissent are essential in a democracy.

The far-left uses slur words against their political opponents because they have lost the argument.

How to Handle Insults on Social Media

Books about political correctness

Controlling the language is crucial in a totalitarian system.

The author George Orwell in his book Politics and the English Languagewrote: If thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.

Hence, Orwells invention of the fictional language Newspeak which is used in his classic dystopian novel 1984.

Newspeak is a form of English that is controlled by the state to corrupt happiness and free thought.

Robert B. Spencer – Wikipedia

Posted: at 10:33 pm

American anti-Muslim author and blogger

Robert Bruce Spencer (born 1962)[1] is an American anti-Muslim[2][3][4][5] author, blogger and one of the key figures of the counter-jihad movement. His published books include two New York Times bestsellers.

In 2003 he founded and has since directed a blog that tracks what he considers Islamic extremism, known as Jihad Watch. He co-founded the anti-Muslim group Stop Islamization of America with blogger and far-right conspiracy theorist Pamela Geller.[6] Reports that two of Spencer's books were listed in FBI training materials and that he had given seminars to various law enforcement units in the United States stirred controversy.[2][7] He has frequently appeared on Fox News.[8] In 2013 the UK Home Office barred Spencer from travel to the UK for 3 to 5 years for "making statements that may foster hatred that might lead to inter-community violence".

Spencer was baptized in the Greek Orthodox Church and joined the Melkite Greek Catholic Church in 1984.[9][10][11] In a 2006 interview, Spencer stated that his grandparents were forced to emigrate from an area that is now part of Turkey under Ataturk because they were Christians.[12] According to a 2010 interview in New York magazine, Spencer's father worked for the Voice of America during the Cold War, and in his younger days, Spencer himself worked at Revolution Books, a Maoist bookstore in New York City founded by Robert Avakian.[13]

Spencer received an M.A. in 1986 in religious studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His masters thesis was on Catholic history.[14] He has said he has been studying Islamic theology, law, and history since 1980.[12][15] He worked in think tanks for more than 20 years,[13] and in 20022003 was an adjunct fellow with the Free Congress Foundation.[16] Spencer named Paul Weyrich, also a Melkite Catholic, as a mentor of his writings on Islam. Spencer writes, "Paul Weyrich taught me a great deal, by word and by example about how to deal both personally and professionally with the slanders and smears that are a daily aspect of this work."[16]

Spencer was criticized by clergy in the Catholic Church because of his views on Islam.[11] He left the church in 2016 to return to the Greek Orthodox Church as a result of "personal reflection and historical study".[17]

Spencer is known for his anti-Muslim views.[2][3][4][5][18][19][20] He comments on radical Islam, Islamic extremism, Islamic terrorism, and Islamic supremacism.[21] Spencer's commentary on Islam has been regarded as "hav[ing] made a huge impact on the misinformation about Islam that circulates so freely on the Internet, in the media, and in political circles."[22]

Spencer co-founded the anti-Muslim[2][3][4][5] group Stop Islamization of America (also known as the American Freedom Defense Initiative) with Pamela Geller in 2010. The organization is designated as a hate group by the Anti-Defamation League[23] and the Southern Poverty Law Center.[24][25][26] He and Geller led a campaign to stop the building of Park51, an Islamic community center near the World Trade Center, which they referred to as the "Ground Zero Mosque".[18]

In July 2011, Wired reported that two of Spencer's books were listed in FBI training materials. Both The Truth About Muhammad and The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam were recommended for agents hoping to better understand Islam.[7]

Anders Breivik, the Norwegian spree killer behind the 2011 Norway terrorist attacks which killed 77, cited Spencer 64 times in his manifesto and wrote of him, "About Islam I recommend essentially everything written by Robert Spencer."[18][27] Spencer condemned Breivik and said he was unfairly blamed by the media for the attack.[28][19]

In 2012, Spencer released Did Muhammad Exist? that questions whether there is any historical evidence that the prophet of Islam actually existed. A reviewer for The New American commented, "Spencer's work is not a 'balanced' one nor does it appear to have been intended to be."[29] He released a second book in 2021, Islamophobia and The Threat to Free Speech, in which Spencer argued that America and the larger Western world was primed and prepared to surrender its free speech under the threat of Islamophobia.[30]

The government of Pakistan banned Spencer's book, The Truth About Muhammad, in 2016, citing "objectionable material" as the cause.[31] Onward Muslim Soldiers was banned in Malaysia in 2007.[32]

An October 2010 investigative report by The Tennessean described Spencer as one of several individuals who "... cash in on spreading hate and fear about Islam." Tennessean investigation concluded: "IRS filings from 2008 show that Robert Spencer earned $132,537 from the David Horowitz Freedom Center, and Horowitz pocketed over $400,000 for himself in just one year."[33][34]

On April 13, 2017, Spencer spoke at the Truman State University despite protests and a petition against him. He was invited by the Young America's Foundation.[35] On May 1, 2017, Spencer spoke at the University of Buffalo. There he was shouted down and heckled.[36] On May 3, 2017, Spencer spoke at Gettysburg College; 375 alumni urged the college president Janet Morgan Riggs to cancel the speech, but the event went on as planned.[37] Spencer said, "There is one kind of diversity that is not valued generally in an academic setting and that is intellectual diversity."[38] On November 14, 2017, Spencer spoke at Stanford University. Many students walked out during the event.[39]

Spencer said that "a young Icelandic Leftist" poisoned him in 2017 in Reykjavik, Iceland.[40][41]

On June 26, 2013, Spencer and Pamela Geller were banned from entering the UK.[42] They were due to speak at an English Defence League march in Woolwich, south London, where Drummer Lee Rigby was killed. Home Secretary Theresa May informed Spencer and Geller that their presence in the UK would "not be conducive to the public good".[43]

A letter from the UK Home Office stated that this decision is based on Spencer's statement that Islam "is a religion or a belief system that mandates warfare against unbelievers for the purpose of establishing a societal model that is absolutely incompatible with Western society. ...Because of media and general government unwillingness to face the sources of Islamic terrorism these things remain largely unknown."[44]

The decision was to stand for between three and five years. The ban followed a concerted campaign by the UK anti-racism organization Hope not Hate,[45] which said it had collected 26,000 signatures for a petition to the Home Secretary.[46] Spencer and Geller contested the ban, but in 2015 the British Court of Appeals dismissed the appeal, arguing that "this was a public order case where the police had advised that significant public disorder and serious violence might ensue from the proposed visit."[47][48]

The ban was criticized by Douglas Murray. He stated that Islamist hate preachers are still allowed to enter the UK, and noted his belief that what Geller and Spencer say is much less objectionable than the views and statements of extremist Muslim clerics such as Muhammad al-Arefe, who was allowed to enter the UK shortly before Spencer and Geller were banned.[49]

Real Time with Bill Maher Season 21: Everything You Need To Know – Nilsen Report

Posted: at 10:33 pm

Real Time with Bill Maher is officially renewed for two more seasons. The late-night series currently has 20 seasons in total.

Real Time with Bill Maher, a weekly HBO discussion series hosted by comedian and political satirist Bill Maher, airs once a week. Real Time, like his former Comedy Central and ABC series Politically Incorrect, featured a panel of guests who analyse current events in politics and the media. Unlike the previous show, visitors are typically more knowledgeable about the subject: the panel includes more specialists, such as journalists, academics, and politicians, and fewer actors and celebrities.

How to Invest With Wit and Wisdom – ThinkAdvisor

Who are the investors that sagely said, It takes courage to be a pig and Risk comes from not knowing what youre doing?

These and hundreds of other witticisms, most related to risk management, pack Applied Wisdom: 700 Witticisms to Save Your Assets (Radius Book Group, Nov. 16), a new book byAlexander M. Ineichen, a chartered financial analyst and 33-year veteran of the financial services industry.

In an interview with ThinkAdvisor, the founder of Ineichen Research and Management discusses a dozen witticisms found in his amusing, illuminating book.

These observations, made by VIPs as different as Confucius and Jerry Seinfeld, are typically profound, sometimes politically incorrect and often simply saucy.

Here are two examples about success: Buy when the cannons are thundering and sell when the violins are playing (banker N.R. Rothschild).

Rise early, work hard, strike oil. John Paul Getty called that his formula for success.

Ineichen, who founded his Swiss-based independent research firm in 2009, focuses on risk management and nowcasting.

The latter, he says, replaces the guesswork of forecasting and is the basis of a robust decision-making process.

He started out in derivatives brokerage and risk management products at Swiss Bank Corp. in 1988. He was with UBS in Zurich and London from 1990 to 2009. In 2000, he wrote the widely read white paper In Search of Alpha, and in 2001, The Search for Alpha Continues.

Much of the wit and wisdom in his book Ineichen has been collecting quips for 35 years concerns the benefits of contrarianism in investing and the advice not to blindly follow the crowd.

ThinkAdvisor recently interviewed Ineichen, a chartered alternative investment analyst as well, who was phoning from Zug, Switzerland.

Read on to pick up pearls of risk-management wisdom from the likes of Cicero and Peter Lynch, and to find out who originated the pithy quotes at the top of this article.

Here are highlights of our conversation:

THINKADVISOR: How can the witticisms in your book help financial advisors?

ALEXANDER INEINCHEN: They contain a lot of summarized knowledge from the past. Often financial theory takes that wisdom and mathematizes it.

When you apply the wisdom to finance and risk management, in particular, its helpful.

Lets talk about 12 of the witticisms youve written about. First, this one from Warren Buffett: Successful investing requires a quality of temperament, not a high IQ. You need an IQ of 125 tops, and you must be able to think for yourself.

I dont know whether the 125 measurement is correct, but theres a concept from psychology suggesting that extremely smart people, especially book-smart people, can actually make pretty bad mistakes by, sort of, missing whats going on in the real world.

The first part of the quote is a reference to that: You need a certain attitude and to be analytical.

The second part refers to the contrarian idea that you have to be able to think on your own, which means you cant always just follow what everyone else does.

If you do that, youll have the performance of average investors. But you want to be better than the average investor. That means you need to think for yourself and do something different when a storm comes up.

Buffett also said, Risk comes from not knowing what youre doing.

Ignorance of ignorance and hubris are also just as dangerous.

Heres one from British economist John Maynard Keynes: When circumstances change, I change my mind. What do you do?

He said that if you spot a change, you have to change your investment hypothesis. But until the day when and if the circumstances change, leave the positions in your portfolio as is.

Keynes said too: If you really want to buy something cheap, you cant wait until the market loves it.

A good example is energy stocks a year ago. They were so hated because everyone was focused on green and clean energy. The market neglected those stocks, but then you had such a strong rebound over the past 12 months.

From famed Magellan Fund manager Peter Lynch:

Never invest in an idea you cant illustrate with a crayon.

The idea here is to keep it simple. Its the concept that you need to understand what youre investing in.

Albert Einstein said, If you cant explain it to a [6-year-old], you dont understand it fully.

Heres a quote from N.M. Rothschild, the German banker (1777-1836): I buy when the cannons are thundering and sell when the violins are playing.

Thats one of my favorites. In fact, I used that quote earlier today in a presentation.

When things are good, its time to sell not when things are really bad.

The last great buying opportunity was at the end of March [to] the beginning of April 2020. That was when the cannons were thundering because of the coronavirus lockdown. Volatility spiked.

But now volatility is very low, and were in the opposite situation. Now the violins are playing.

This is a dangerous situation. If everyone is bullish, theyve already positioned themselves on the buy side, whereas when fear is greater, everyone sells like mad.

And thats when opportunity arrives.

LINDON DODD: Got to find the haystack, then the needle – Evening News and Tribune

Posted: at 10:33 pm

I like that glasses suggest intelligence instead of broken eyes!

Jonathan Vinson

I had one of those kind of afternoons all people probably have but nobody knows about them.

I was getting ready to do my daily push-up regimen. I say daily but every once in a while I might skip a day or two and then begin a new consecutive string.

Anyway, the whole reason to tell you that is that when I do my push-ups I remove my eyeglasses. When I say eyeglasses, I really might as well be saying I remove my eyeballs.

My vision without being corrected would rival that of a cave-dwelling bat. If I had my eyeglasses removed and stood 10 feet in front of a mirror I would not be able to positively identify myself if I were under oath in a court of law.

So, routinely I set the glasses down and went to the floor. After my brisk workout I was attempting to catch my breath. As Donovan once musically proclaimed, Ah, but I may as well just try and catch the wind!

Senior moments is such a cruel and stereotypical description that I almost hesitate to use it. Just say I am not unfamiliar with the definition and/or working context of the concept! I have no idea either. Sometimes the words just type out.

Suffice it to say a futile attempt by definition could be defined as someone without their eyeglasses who is looking for their eyeglasses. Sorry, I refuse to accept that I need a 1950s school librarian neck chain not to lose my glasses. I dont refuse to accept that it might possibly be time to wear one. I refuse to add another unfashion statement to my once hip and suave wardrobe. Nowadays a bathroom robe and slippers might be considered ample proof for boasting to someone that it counts as getting dressed for the day.

I know what you are all wondering at this moment boxers or briefs?

I was not looking for a needle in a haystack I am saying I couldnt see the haystack. My eyes have always been bad. In the second grade we took an eye exam. To my knowledge I was 6 or 7 and had never had one. Some people thought I was a teachers pet because I sat in the front row. Heck, she wrote in letters two feet high on the chalkboard, and I had to be within a six-foot radius to read them.

I admit to being a pretty good student and probably sucked up to the teachers.

I got eyeglasses and thought I had been reborn. The earliest I can remember was an optometrist telling me that in one eye I had 20/200 vision. If my math is right that is about 10 times worse than someone with 20/20. I looked it up. I was considered to have what is called a severe visual impairment.

And when it comes to night vision that 20/200 would be considered eagle-eyed. If I were out somewhere after dark and misplaced my eyeglasses I would have to just camp out there until dawn. That first pair of spectacles were black, thick-framed and had lenses the size of the bottom of the old-time Coca Cola glass bottles you know the ones we used to pick up on the road and get a nickel each for at the store. As a kid that was like the California Gold strike. I could walk a mile and redeem enough bottles to go grocery shopping at Lawlers General Store on Allison Lane.

And by grocery shopping, I mean candy buying in bulk.

Anyway since my days in the second grade, eyeglasses now are almost a status symbol. My new prescription pair are Ray Ban. They have very thin bifocal lenses, razor-thin blue-tipped frames and almost give me a totally different appearance. I am no Chris Hemsworth, but I think I look the best that a pair of eyeglasses can influence considering what we are working with here.

Sorry for the stream of consciousness detour on the story. I didnt mean to go all Robin Williams on you.

Where were we? I am trying to remember. I dont want to have to go back and read this thing again.

Oh, yeah! I was looking for my eyeglasses that I had misplaced while I wasnt wearing my eyeglasses. In case you just feel a need to know I think the longest time it ever took for me to find them after a set of push-ups is 8 to 10 minutes. And yes, swearing was involved.

Since I paid three times as much for this pair of glasses as I did for my first personal car, losing them would be like suffering a loss from a major financial investment in my future.

I am not proud or embarrassed by my story. I am not bragging about still doing a daily regimen of push-ups. I am proud, however, to still engage in one very physical activity that doesnt involve grunting and/or being seated.

As you can probably guess by now the story had kind of a happy ending. I did find my eyeglasses strewn about somewhere in the living room after feeling my way around like the old Musky the Mole cartoon character on Deputy Dawg.

In todays vernacular I would be considered visually challenged. I suspect the terms four eyes, blind as a bat, and Professor Gizmo are now considered politically incorrect.

I prefer the term visually enhanced. Sounds like I had a vision enlargement.

Future blind-squirrel-finding-a-nut-in-a-snowstorm-moments will again be an appropriate analogy. Or, as my son likes to add with his judgmental appraisal of me at the eyeglass-missing moments, Mr. Magoo; youve done it again!

Ah, remember the good old days when we could make fun of the hard of seeing?
