Stockfish can crush you at chess even more efficiently in the 14.1 update – Neowin

Posted: at 10:20 am

The team behind the Stockfish chess engine has announced the release of Stockfish 14.1. The update comes almost four months after the previous stable release and improves the engines Elo rating by 17 points and wins three times more game pairs than it loses. According to Computer Chess Rating List, Stockfish 14 has an Elo rating of 3549 so an additional 17 points put Stockfish 14.1 at around 3566 thats a huge 684 point lead over the best human chess player, Magnus Carlsen.

Over the last few months, the team said it had been preparing this update to include a more advanced NNUE (neural network) architecture and various search improvements have been included. The team said that at these lofty heights of play, draws are very common and during Neowins brief four-game test between Stockfish 14.1 and Stockfish 14 all the results came out as a tie.

For those of you who want to see how long you can last against the latest Stockfish release, you can follow our guide on setting up Stockfish in a program called PyChess. While youre sure to be defeated (not even the world champion can beat Stockfish), it can be fun to see how many moves you can hold out. As it analyses positions deeply, its ruthlessly efficient at taking your pieces and landing a checkmate.

As Stockfish is built by a community of enthusiasts, the team asks chess fans to join the fishtest testing framework to help improve the engine and programmers are offered the opportunity to join in with the coding work. You can learn more about participating on the Get Involved page.

Grand Swiss: Shirov and Najer join Firouzja in the lead – Chessbase News

Posted: at 10:20 am

Alireza Firouzja has been playing under the French flag since July 2021. In round 5 of the FIDE Chess.com Grand Swiss, he faced former Frances number one Maxime Vachier-Lagrave on top board. The youngster, who is currently rated 7 points higher than his rival, faced MVLs Najdorf Sicilian and drew his compatriot with white in 31 moves.

After being the sole leader for two rounds, Firouzja was caught up by two veterans on Sunday Alexei Shirov (49 years old) and Evgeniy Najer (44). Shirov will get to face Firouzja on top board in round 6. Much like his young opponent, the man from Riga is no stranger to changing federations, as he has represented the Soviet Union, Latvia and Spain at different points during his illustrious career.

Fascinated by the French Winawer

The Winawer Variation in just 60 minutes - that can only work by reducing it to a clear repertoire for Black and, where possible, general recommendations rather than variations. Alexei Shirov was surprised at how quickly he managed to make of the French Winawer an opening he himself could play. And now he will let you share in his conclusions.

The three co-leaders have a 14-player chasing pack a half point back. Fabiano Caruana, Bogdan-Daniel Deac, Krishnan Sasikiran, David Navara, Anton Korobov and Gabriel Sargissian all won in round 5 to join the large group of chasers, which also includes two rising stars who are having a great 2021 so far Nihal Sarin (aged 16) and Samuel Sevian (20).

...54 boards

Shirov beat Croatias number one Ivan Saric with the black pieces. Not surprisingly, the combative opponents entered a line of the Ruy Lopez that gives plenty of play for both sides. A critical position was reached after 20 moves.

The older of the two had spent over 40 minutes on his last four moves, while Saric needed 34 minutes to decide what to do after Shirovs 20...c5. Saric was calculating the consequences of 21.Qd7, when Black can respond either with 21...Rb7 or 21...cxd4, two variations that lead to vastly different positions.

Offering a queen swap was the only move that would have kept the balance though, while the Croatians 22.dxc5 actually leaves Black in the drivers seat after 22...Qxe5 23.Bf4 Qxb2

White has given up a piece, but can now grab an exchange on b8 or go for 23.Qd7, Sarics choice, trying to create complications by leaving more pieces on the board. By this point, the Croatian grandmaster surely noticed he was on the back foot against an opponent famous for his ability to handle the initiative.

There followed 23...Ng6 24.Bd6

Here Shirov did not hesitate before going for 24...e3. The engines show 25.fxe3 is the best response at this point, but all ensuing lines are uninspiring for White, to say the least. Saric played 25.Rf1instead, but after 25...exf2+ 26.Kh1 Rbe8 it was clear that Black would not let this one slip away.

The rook on e8 is ready to infiltrate on e1 with decisive effect. Saric resigned after 27.Rcd1 Bb8 28.Bxf8 Kxf8 (the rook stays on e8) 29.g3 Bxf3 30.c6 Qc2. It was animpressive second win in a row for one of the most famous players to hail from Riga!

2015 European champion Evgeniy Najer| Photo: Anna Shtourman

Russian grandmaster Evgeniy Najer never quite made it to the very top of the world ranking, but he has nonetheless accumulated a number of remarkable results during his career. Among other accolades, he won the European Championship in 2015 and the strong Aeroflot Open in 2016. Moreover, at the first edition of the Grand Swiss on the Isle of Man, he managed to upset Vishy Anand in the very first round.

Najer could have joined Firouzja in the lead on Saturday, but missed a big chance to take down Saric from a clearly superior position. The disappointment did not hurt his good form though, as he beat Robert Hovhannisyan with black in round 5.

Hovhannisyan had faltered while under pressure a couple of moves ago, and here found nothing better than 29.e5, giving up his weak pawn and entering a double-rook endgame after 29...Bxe5 30.Nf3 Rd5 31.Nxe5 Rxe5

Najer did not fail to convert his advantage for a second day in a row, as he forced his opponents resignation 17 moves later.

...108 players

It was an eventful round in the womens tournament, with six decisive results on the top 10 boards, leaving five players sharing first place with 4/5 points. Former sole leader Lei Tingjie signed a 30-move draw with the black pieces against second seed Nana Dzagnidze, which allowed Nino Batsiashvili, Zhu Jiner, Elisabeth Paehtz and Jolanta Zawadzka to catch up with her atop the standings.

19-year-old Olga Badelka from Belarus also scored a win, joining the chasing pack going into round 6, the last one before the only rest day in Riga.

...25 boards

Nino Batsiashvili playing white against Alexandra Kosteniuk| Photo: Anna Shtourman

On the second board, Batsiashvili got the better of this years World Cup winner Alexandra Kosteniuk. Out of a Ragozin Defence, Batsiashvili saw her opponent playing overly optimistically, giving White a visible positional advantage in the early middlegame. She still needed to convert her trumps into a tangible edge though and Batsiashvili managed to do just that, in style.

After a quick glance at the position, we can sense that there might be a tactical shot for White here. Batsiashvili had spent almost 20 minutes before pushing17.e4 in the previous move, and after 17...dxe4, she knew what she had to do the Georgian immediately responded with 18.Nxh6+.

The game continued 18...gxh6 19.fxe4 Kg7 20.e5

Calculation Training in Attack & Defence Vol.1 & Vol.2

The two DVDs offer you the chance to solve 66 exercises with multiple questions. These exercises are presented in the interactive format, which makes them accessible for players of different strengths as we will go through the thought process step by step

There is not much Black can do at this point. Kosteniuk kept on playing until move 33, but Batsiashvili patiently made the most of her strong initiative to join the leading pack with six rounds to go.

Posted: at 10:19 am

SHREVEPORT, Louisiana (KETK) Over the past few years the sports betting industry has exploded.

Louisiana is now the 29th state to allow sports betting. Its gotten so big, you can find sports betting information on most sports channels, on the radio and online.

Just seeing the joy that it brings to these that have been waiting for it for years, said Quinton Harris, Horseshoe Casino & Hotel Bossier.

Although sports betting is illegal in Texas, East Texans now have an opportunity to wager on just about any sport just miles away in the Shreveport area.

We get all kind of bets, our first bets is 55,000, said Harris.

The Horseshoe Casino in Bossier City began taking bets on Sunday with a daring a $50,000 bet on the winless Detroit Lions.

You pick whatever sport youre looking for to bet and you can place the bet by inserting money or a voucher, said Harris.

Louisiana casino owners are hoping East Texans take advantage of the closeness and add to their bottom line.

Its definitely going to help business a lot and I think its going to definitely bring a better experience to customers who watch the games, said Harris.

You must be 21 years or older to place a bet. Athletes, coaches, or officials cant bet on their own games. Bets on high school or youth sports are not allowed.

Hopefully one day all 50 states have it and then everybody can enjoy games and bet if they want to, says Harris.

A confusing array of sports betting measures – CalMatters

Posted: at 10:19 am

In summary

Next year, California voters could see as many as four competing ballot measures to legalize gambling on sports events with countless billions of dollars at stake.

Memo to California voters: Prepare to be confused because you could be facing four competing ballot measures next year to legalize sports wagering.

Indian tribes that now have a monopoly on casino gambling in California, big on-line sports betting corporations, horse racing tracks, and local poker parlors are jousting for control of what could be countless billions of dollars in bets on sporting events.

Following a 2018 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that made sports betting legal, a number of other states have accepted it, and the major professional sports leagues, which condemned sports betting for decades, have struck deals with major on-line betting operations.

However, years of efforts in the California Legislature to fashion a system acceptable to all stakeholders fell short. The legislative stalemate meant as it often does in California a shift to the alternative arena of ballot measures.

Major casino-owning tribes struck first with a measure that would extend their gambling monopoly to sports wagering, qualifying it for the 2022 ballot.

Get a veteran journalist's take on what's going on in California with a weekly round-up of Dan's column every Friday.

In reaction, three other initiatives are in the works, each of which would benefit its sponsor in some way, but its not certain that all will make the ballot. Although the election is a year away, the calendar for qualifying measures is fairly advanced and sponsors will have to hustle to make it which means spending millions of dollars for professional signature-gathering campaigns.

The tribal measure already ticketed for the ballot would require sports wagers to be placed either in existing casinos or in locations owned by the tribes. It also would allow sports wagers at major horse racing tracks an obvious ploy to dampen potential opposition but would not allow on-line bets on sports events.

The measure, if passed, would block DraftKings and FanDuel, the two major on-line wagering outfits that yearn to operate in California. But it also includes a sly legal attack on the local poker parlors, which have long feuded with the casino tribes, and the cardrooms struck back with a measure of their own that would allow them to accept sports wagers.

Very quickly, DraftKings and FanDuel pledged millions of dollars for a third measure that would allow them to operate in California and have drawn support from some big city mayors by promising that their proposal would provide money to deal with homelessness.

Finally, three casino-owning tribes, two of which have backed the original tribal measure, are floating a fourth measure that would allow on-line betting controlled by the tribes. Its a hedge against the DraftKings-FanDuel measure because it assumes that given a choice between wagering on-line or driving to a casino to place a bet, betters would prefer the former.

We rely on your generous support to cover the stories that matter most to you. If you find our work valuable in these difficult times, please support our journalism.

Millions of dollars are already being spent by the sponsors of the four measures and theyve commenced hostilities with dueling public relations campaigns in advance of what promises to be a tsunami of television and on-line advertising to persuade voters to choose one over the others.

It would surprise no one if hundreds of millions of dollars are spent on the campaigns next year, because the millions would be pocket lint compared to the billions of wagering dollars that would flow through the hands of whichever interests can claim legal authority.

That said, its also possible that the campaigns will be short-circuited by a political deal. Those who sponsor ballot measures can remove them from the ballot if their demands are met by legislation.

Given the years of legislative stalemate on the issue, its difficult to see the competing interests agreeing to divvy up the pie, but its not an impossible resolution.

Sports Betting 101: To hedge or not to hedge – For The Win

Posted: at 10:19 am

Whether or not to hedge your bets is mostly a matter of ego and mindset.

Many bettors but certainly not all will avoid hedging and try to talk you out of it. Sometimes its because they dont want to upset any positive ~vibes~ if a wager is going well, other times its because they dont want to sacrifice potential profits. Sometimes it just simply comes down to pride.

Another large portion of the betting public will hedge or even cash out their bets and the earliest opportunity. It all comes down to individual perspective.

Do you risk letting a bet ride and go for glory? Or do you try to avoid a financial loss at all costs?

If you find yourself in that latter group, there are a number of ways to go about hedging beyond placing a second bet. One option includes posting your ticket on a website like PropSwap, which serves as a sort of eBay for bettors. You can list your already-placed ticket up for auction and attempt to recoup as much of the winnings as the market is willing to pay without having to root against yourself by placing a second bet.

Hedging is a bit like basketball teams fouling when up by three at the end of games. Youre giving yourself the best chance to win money, but youre also acknowledging a lack of confidence in the bet you placed. For the most part, hedging is best used for long parlays and outright futures bets.

Even then, youre still paying a premium to guarantee a win.

Hedging may be the most divisive topic in sports betting, but its up to each person to decide on whether or not to partake. If you can handle a reduced payout and a little bit of stigma hedging can be a useful tool in any bettors arsenal.

New Jersey Ballot Question Includes Expanded College Sports Betting. Will it Pass? – The Action Network

New Jersey has become the U.S. sports betting capitol in some ways. It battled the leagues all the way to the Supreme Court to kickstart this revolution, and became the first state to take $1 billion in bets in a single month.

However, betting on college teams and events in the state has always been prohibited. No betting on Rutgers football, Seton Hall basketball or NCAA Tournament games at Prudential Center in Newark.

On Tuesday, voters will decide whether to change that through ballot question No. 1, which allows wagering on college teams and events in NJ. Heres the full question:

Do you approve amending the Constitution to permit wagering through casinos and current or former horse racetracks on all college sport or athletic events? Currently, wagering is prohibited on college sport or athletic events that take place in New Jersey. Wagering is also prohibited on an event in which a team from a New Jersey college participates.

Its no sure thing to pass, despite the appetite for sports betting in the state. A Stockton Poll showed 51% of voters are against it, compared to 37% for it. Another poll from Fairleigh Dickinson shows voters are about split.

There hasnt been much publicity around this ballot question, and a lot of people are going to miss it, or skip it, Dan Cassino, the director of the poll, told NJ.com. Its much closer than it was before, and there are many voters who arent going to make a decision about it until they get into the ballot box.

Polls are open Tuesday until 8 p.m .ET.

Theres a second ballot question that asks if non-profits should be allowed to make money off games of chance, like bingo, to support their organizations.

DraftKings Has Monstrous Potential in the Future of Sports Betting – Yahoo Finance

Posted: at 10:19 am

Online gaming company DraftKings (NASDAQ:DKNG) has been the talk of the industry in the past year. The legalization of online betting has transformed the fortunes DKNG stock, and the company expanded its revenue by more than 70%.

Image of the DraftKings app on a smartphone screen.

Source: Tada Images / Shutterstock.com

The company has made several acquisitions over the year and is constantly growing its presence across different states. DKNG stock hit all time high earlier in March. It has shown volatility since then and is trading much lower at less than $47 today.

InvestorPlace - Stock Market News, Stock Advice & Trading Tips

I believe DKNG stock will certainly reach the all-time high again, but it may take some time. The sports betting industry is massive, DraftKings is in a growth stage and there is huge potential to expand.

Let us dig deeper into the catalysts working for DKNG stock.

Despite the impact of the pandemic which led to short seasons and canceled tournaments, online sports betting has been consistently growing. According to PRNewswire, the online sports betting industry will go from $9.5 billion in 2020 to $37 billion in 2025. This is massive growth and DraftKings will play a major role here.

The company has a stronghold on the industry and is making the right moves with partnerships and acquisitions to ensure that it grabs maximum users. If online sports betting is legalized in all states, the numbers could be significantly higher.

The company is not only offering an exciting experience to the users, but is also working on building alternative sources of revenue. Right from the comfort of your home, you can engage in a game and socialize with your friends. It has become a huge hit with sports fanatics.

The company revised its full-year outlook after reporting smashing results and a company will only take this step when it is confident of meeting the expectations. DraftKings has solid potential in the industry and it could become one of the top players by 2023.

Story continues

Although the recent deal with Entain Plc did not work out, DraftKings made several partnerships and acquisitions that will work in its favor. One of the most exciting planned acquisitions is Golden Nugget Online (NASDAQ:GNOG). Interestingly, the company has enough cash to expand the market through acquisitions and it is walking on the right path.

I have my hopes pinned on this partnership which will help expand the company. This transaction is expected to be wrapped up in the next six months and it will add 5 million users to the company. It will also help reduce the losses of DraftKings as Golden Nugget is a solid, revenue-generating company.

Considering the potential of the company and the industry to cater to, DKNG stock is well positioned at the current level. The stock will go higher in the coming months and this dip is a good chance to enter. Ark Investments Cathie Wood is a fan of DKNG stock and has bought it time and again.

DKNG stock is promising for the long term and has a massive user base. It has a high revenue growth, and the company is putting the money in the right places by partnering with the right players and companies. The stock has been trading in the range of $40s for a month and I do not see a breakout point any time soon.

The third-quarter results may take the stock higher to the $50s. If the company manages to report higher average revenue per user, it will be a game-changing development. DraftKings will report third-quarter results on Nov 5.

The stock is clearly undervalued considering the market and the ability of the company to generate revenues. Buy DKNG stock before third-quarter results.

The first week of sports betting and online casino gambling drew enough activity to push Connecticut to No. 9 in the US – Yahoo News

Posted: at 10:19 am

In the first week of legal sports betting and online casino gambling in Connecticut, 1.2 million transactions took place, propelling the state to No. 9 among states in overall online sports betting and traffic, a geographic tracking company says.

Boosted by strong interest from its bettors in its populous neighbor New York, Connecticut surpassed Colorado, which has 2.2 million more residents than Connecticut. The betting law approved in May by Gov. Ned Lamont and the General Assembly requires online betting in-state.

Transactions are defined as required geolocation checks when a bet is placed or before. Recurring period checks may be done to validate eligibility.

The data, collected and analyzed by GeoComply Solutions Inc., a Canadian company that applies technology to detect online fraud, said last week the concentration of gambling activity is in southwestern Connecticut, originating in New York. As a result, it said evidence shows a definite appetite for legal, regulated betting options in the region, particularly from New York.

Sports betting could be rolled out in New York early next year, forcing residents in the meantime to look to nearby Connecticut, GeoComply said. Previously, New Jersey, which legalized sports betting in 2018, was a popular destination for sports betting. Geocomply tracks sports betting in 18 states and the District of Columbia.

Weve learned from the New Jersey experience that New Yorkers are clearly motivated to travel locally to bet on sites where proper consumer protections have been put in place that safeguard the integrity of their wager, stated Chad Kornett, vice president of global government relations at GeoComply. Connecticut looks to be quickly following a similar pattern: Easily accessed from the New York City area.

GeoComplys data shows 38% of Connecticuts betting activity has originated from the southwestern corner of the state along the I-95 corridor, the company said. Heavy volume has been concentrated in Stamford and Bridgeport, and other highway entry points stretching north along the New York border also have been hot spots, GeoComply said.

Story continues

The data are the first bits of information to illustrate the success of online gambling in Connecticut, which launched Oct. 19.

Rich Roberts, president of Mohegan Digital, the iGaming division of Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment, said early online gambling performance has been very encouraging, with MoheganSunCasino.com and its partner, FanDuel Sportsbook, bringing in new customers.

Foxwoods Resort Casino and the Connecticut Lottery Corp. did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

GeoComply says its software is installed on more than 400 million devices worldwide and analyzes more than 3 billion transactions a year. Its products incorporate location, device and identity intelligence, with advanced machine learning to detect and flag fraudulent activity.

Connecticut legalized sports betting and online casino gambling and lottery sales in May. Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun opened sports betting sites in the casinos in September and casino games and lottery sales were launched on iPhones, computers and other devices last month.

The first of 15 retail betting sites opened last week in New Haven.
