Land expropriation without compensation MUST go ahead, WILL go ahead – IOL

Since Parliament adopted the resolution on expropriation of land without compensation in 2018, the debate has stuck on two fronts: on the historic lamentations and land grievance in relation to land hunger due to colonial dispossession, as well as on the parliamentary palace politics as political parties try to out-manoeuvre one another on bureaucratic and lexicographic technicalities.

There is a fierce ideological battle not only over the substantive elements of the constitutional 18th amendments to make the expropriation of land without compensation possible, but on the vocabulary and the exact phraseology of this process.

It was Mao Tsedung who said: In class society, everyone lives as a member of a particular class and every thinking without exception is stamped with the brand of a class. Meaning, nothing is class neutral in a class society. It is in this context that the battle for land expropriation with or without compensation should be understood.

It is common cause that, in times of relative peace and stability, the triumphant governing elite tend to suffer temporal disorientation, and lose grip and surrender power over to reactionary forces.

The paradox is that the DA, Freedom Front Plus and AfriForum coalition are fully aware of this and will try hard to use the amendment process as a proxy war to advance a right-wing class offensive to protect privileges gained on race, while the ANC-led alliance partners are consumed by self-illusions.

The EFF with other black parties will have to shift the focus from the race spectrum to national and class dimensions of this paradox to solidify the national and class hegemony over the land question. The EFFs position is that land will be distributed equally among citizens regardless of race, and it will be taken from those who do not use it and be given to those who have intentions to work it. However, the left/right or race/class distinctions will determine the hegemony of the contending forces and their victory.

The right-wing coalition, as described above, is emboldened by the moderates within the majority of the black parties (outside of the EFF) and the neo-liberal-left inside the ANC seems not to be in a radical mood and lacks appetite for an uncompromising thorough-going land reform. And this lack of radical mood and temporal disorientation of the left during this period should be viewed as downright reactionary and fertile breeding grounds for counter-revolution.

The land dispossession by the colonial forces, together with stock theft, the genocide of the indigenous people committed in the process and notwithstanding the immense pain and suffering of the indigenous people from Africa, Latin America, Australia and America, is the historic fact that is well recorded in the annals of history. There can never be any dispute among the majority of the people on this fact, except from the few mentally deranged and bloodthirsty lunatics.

To keep repeating many times the injustices meted out to the indigenous people by the colonial evil forces will never resolve the land question. We must go beyond lamentations to the nuts and bolts of policy options.

Land is freedom and prosperity. There is no doubt that the struggle for decolonisation was primarily about the land question. Clearly, the land dispossession represented the enslavement of the indigenous people and the destruction of their independence as a nation.

Its therefore nonsensical to reduce the current debate on expropriation of land to the historic debate about the land grievance, however tempting or gloried. We must up-scale the debate to a different level which none of the liberal political parties across the board are either willing or prepared to do.

The primary question with regard to land expropriation is not the historic grievance, which is legitimate and can never be dismissed, but the modalities of expropriation. How must we go about the expropriation regime without just changing the faces of the owning elites? How must we distribute the land but without ensuring that the exploitative relations of production remain unchanged? This is the primary question that we must address. And this is not what all liberal political parties are seized with.

With the exception of the EFF, all other political parties are tall on the question of the historic land grievance, but thin on modalities of ownership or usage.

All parties that are committed to expropriation of land as the primary productive force must release a policy that outlines how the land that is expropriated is going to be owned or used beyond various statements of intent. This is a fundamental question; unless it is addressed, a call for land expropriation will be delegitimised by right-wing parties and perhaps hard to be supported. Unless this fundamental question is addressed, any support for land expropriation will be just hot air and rhetorical, without any substance.

We are faced with a paradox, in that for the debate on expropriation to be meaningful, it must focus more on the nitty-gritty of patterns of ownership and land-use. Otherwise, any debate on expropriation will be nothing but idle talk that will not change except to further entrench the exploitative relations of production, save for the change in the complexion of the exploiting class. This is what we must combat.

To go beyond the historic lamentation of the historical and land grievances, answers to the following primary questions must be provided:

* How should we go about the expropriation regime without just changing the faces of the owning elites?

* How should we distribute the land but without ensuring that the exploitative of production remain unchanged?

* What modalities and model of either ownership or land-use should we propose that will ensure those who work the land are the direct beneficiaries of surplus?

* Will the pale class of exploiters of European extraction be replaced by a new dark class of African extraction?

* How, in the final analysis, is expropriation going to yield a change in the complexion of ownership, relations on land and subjugation of the exploiting classes?

It is only by answering all these questions that is it possible to understand the underlying question: Who stands to benefit from expropriation?

The primary and principal objective of progressive parties and movements of the left, whether communist or socialist, has always been the removal of the liberal and right-wing parties political and ideological mainstay, that terrible holy grail of capitalism private property, in Chapter 2 of the Bill of Rights, which has been considered not only in the last century but since antiquity as one of the major, if not only, obstacles to equality and justice for all.

The triumph of land expropriation without compensation through constitutional amendment would be the removal of the private property clause and the abolition of private ownership of land and property in general.

Therefore, land expropriation without compensation must:

* Abolish feudal/semi-feudal patterns of land ownership and tenure (based on tribal or ethnic land claims).

* End colonial, apartheid and racial patterns of land ownership.

* Dismantle capitalistic forms and patterns of land relations embedded in the logic of private property ownership.

Upon achieving this, the question Who stands to benefit from expropriation? is unequivocally answered in that it will benefit the landless, the poorest sections of the South African population, the rural and urban poor, who are forced to stay in squatter camps.

The question of consensus on the proper lexicon and phraseology among various black political parties represented in Parliament is clearly pivotal when it comes to which words should be used in the amendments in order to help to craft a proud future and a solid legacy which shall have land restored back to the African majority, as the hallmark and a concrete manifestation of independence, freedom, sovereignty and prosperity.

This will ensure that we undo 400 years of historical, political, economic and cultural trauma of genocidal proportion in this country. This will be a triumph of our humanity over the barbarity of exclusionary policies and the lunacy of the right-wing fanatics.

The EFFs call for land expropriation without compensation is just and legitimate. There can never be any form of justice like this!

* Sam Matiase is the EFF s Central Command Team member responsible for Land and Agrarian Reform and an EFF member of Parliament. He writes in his personal capacity.

Gamblers who seek help do mostly do this when the problem is severe and they have lost all hope of dealing with it. This should not be the case. You can determine if you are dealing with a gambling addiction when you cannot follow your laid downtime and money limits.

One of the easiest ways to deal with gambling addictions is to find another activity to channel that energy and time to. On the road to recovery, avoid boredom and having nothing to do because it is at this point the urge for excessive gambling takes root.

Plan your days with lots of activities to avoid doing nothing and falling into the pit hole of gambling again. You can join a local support group and learn how others are coping and what mechanisms have worked.

Take advantage of gambling addiction support groups. You can visit a local one in your area or find one online. There, you will get advice and get to listen to stories of others and what they are doing to deal with the addiction.

If you are dealing with a mild situation of gambling addiction, setting gambling restrictions can help you curb the excessive. Set a time and money limit on what you want to spend while gambling and be true to it. If you meet your limit, stand up and walk out on gambling without looking back no matter the urge.

Avoid spending a minute or a dollar more, because when you do, it is going to be hard stopping yourself from spending the next minute and the next dollar playing. Before you know it, you have far exceeded your limits.

If your gambling addiction problem is severe and you can no longer follow a limit, the best solution is to cut off from gambling completely. Try and live a normal life without gambling. Do this until you no longer feel the urge to gamble, Check out Here for more information.

To avoid boredom which can lead to relapse, find other activities you can do. For example, you can rekindle an old hobby you enjoy. Do not worry about when you will continue gambling, just stop gambling.

In the long run, when you have regained control, you can now dip back in gambling activities little by little. This time follow stringently the time and money limits you set to avoid a relapse.

One of the biggest challenges to dealing with gambling addictions is dealing with your gambling circle. If you have close friends and people around you that take so much about gambling, it is best to avoid such conversations (without being disrespectful it possible). On the road to recovery, the slightest trigger can ruin it.

Also, if you belong to social media groups that talk about gambling, it is best to leave those groups till at least you can get your gambling addiction under full control.

The best way to deal with gambling addictions is to avoid all forms of gambling till you are in a better position to exercise control.

Space Hotel With Artificial Gravity To Be Operational By 2027 – Intelligent Living

Posted: at 1:30 pm

The Gateway Foundations Orbital Assembly Corporation (OAC), a manufacturing firm centered on the colonization of space, recently revealed new details about its ambitious Voyager Station which is set to be the worlds first commercial space station operating with artificial gravity. It will circle Earth every 90 minutes.

The project is a multi-phase endeavor in need of funding to come to fruition. The company is selling stakes to private investors at $0.25 a share until April 1, 2021. Assembly is scheduled to begin around 2025 and finish by 2027.

Tim Alatorre, a Gateway Foundation executive team member and one of the stations designers, said:

We havent seen an explosion of commercial activity in space. The cost has been about $8,000 per kilogram [$3,600 per lb.] for a long time. But with the Falcon 9, you can do it for less than $2,000. And as Starship comes online, it will only cost a few hundred dollars. (These were references to SpaceX launchers the companys workhorse Falcon 9 rocket and its Starship Mars vehicle, which is in development.)

OACs team of skilled NASA veterans, engineers, architects, and pilots are working on the design. It will be a space hotel in low Earth orbit. The ring structure will rotate fast enough to generate moon-like levels of artificial gravity for occupants.

The station will be for vacationers who want to experience off-Earth living and astronauts, scientists, educators, and staff. If realized, it will be the biggest human-made structure in space, accommodating up to 400 people.

Alatorre said:

Microgravity is just brutal on our bodies. We need artificial gravity a mechanism to give us a dosage of gravity to give us the ability to live long-term in space.

The ring will feature amenities similar to what youd find in a cruise ship, such as viewing lounges, themed restaurants, bars, concert venues, movie theaters, libraries, gyms, and a health spa. It will support 24 integrated habitation modules and have functional showers and toilets.

Tom Spilker, OACs chief technology officer and VP of engineering and space systems design, said:

We dont want the Voyager experience to be like being in an attack submarine in combat, so were [building] for comfort. Its a bit smaller than the length of the U.S. Capitol building.

Despite the seemingly endless list of luxury amenities, there will also be airlocks for visitors. So anyone who can afford a space hotel can go on a private spacewalk, where the only thing between you and the universe is a faceplate.

The first phase of construction will be a small-scale prototype station and a free-flying microgravity facility to test the concept. When its time to assemble the actual Voyager Station, OAC will employ a Structure Truss Assembly Robot (STAR) to fabricate the frame in orbit. The company is developing a robotic observation drone for remote monitoring via a virtual reality headset.

Alatorre said:

Its going to be our eyes on the job site. The observer drone operates in a support function. It can perch on existing craft. It can also be fully reusable and can fly and have a free-flight mode on extended missions.

OAC envisions there being Voyager modules for government and private companies to conduct lunar training missions and beyond. The station would also serve as a launchpad from where entrepreneurs can base their space on tourist activities.

Female firefighters lead the charge for change and urge women not to give up – ABC News

Posted: at 1:29 pm

When Melinda Sharpe began training to become a firefighter, she was the only woman in her course.

While her colleagues relaxed in hotels between gruelling training days, Ms Sharpe went home to breastfeed her one-year-old baby and got her two other young children to sleep.

"I'm not a quitter so it was something I was determined to do no matter how tired I was," she said.

"I was up two to three times a night while I was doing my recruit course and expressing [breast milk] on my lunch break.

"[The other participants] were pretty much childfree so they didn't have the responsibilities of family life."

She wants to inspire more women to enter the male-dominated field but warns it is not easy.

Supplied: Melinda Sharpe

Ms Sharpe, a former emergency department nurse from southern Queensland, passed the auxiliary course in 2017 and began on-call work at Inglewood, near Goondiwindi.

She is now a full-time firefighter in Toowoomba, west of Brisbane, after three attempts at the challenging assessments.

Supplied: Melinda Sharpe

"On my first two goes I failed the physical test," she said.

"There's a beep test, claustrophobia test, then a set of online aptitude tests that you need to pass.

"We then go to a physical test, which is quite difficult, quite intense."

While she was physically smaller than most of the men, she was expected and determined to perform "like any of the boys".

"There's no difference for males or females. We all do the same testing," she said.

"Women are fighting to be treated equally."

Out in her community, Ms Sharpe is working to challenge people's assumptions that fire trucks are driven by firemen.

"I've jumped out of the truck before when we've pulled up in public and you'll hear a mum say to their little child 'Oh look, the firemen are here'," she said.

"And the mum will see me.

"I'm not one to jump in and correct someone but you can see that they've noticed it's not all firemen, it's firefighters.

"Just being a female out in the community will allow other females to see females in the role and maybe consider it as a career."

Several years into the role, she is beginning to see more women enter the profession.

Four women now work in Queensland Fire and Emergency Services' south-west region, up from two 12 months ago.

Nursing helped prepare Ms Sharpe for some of the confronting scenes she faces as a firefighter.

"I've seen it all. I'm not fazed by gory things," she said.

She prides herself on bringing a caring nature to the role.

"I'm not saying the men aren't caring but they can be a bit more abrupt," she said.

"[But] there are no issues being in a male-dominated profession really.

"The only thing that's changed from my nursing is basically the tea room conversations I'm learning a lot about old cars and sport."

Elsewhere in the emergency services, women are determined to turn around the gender imbalance.

Group leader of the Dalby State Emergency Service, Tanya Mudie, has spent the past two years handmaking hundreds of hair bows for female volunteers in south-west Queensland.

It's part of her self-funded 'Empowering Women' project, aimed at building up the confidence of the women in the service.

"It was very much a boys' club. There was the mentality that it was man's work that we were doing," Ms Mudie said.

"We do take the same tests, we have the same training, but I feel like a lot of the time the women are behind the eight ball and feel like we can't do it because we don't have that formative background a lot of men have.

ABC Southern Queensland: Baz Ruddick

"For example, I'd never held a chainsaw, I'd never been in a boat."

Ms Mudie says while the journey to success is often tougher for women, they are increasingly taking on leadership roles in emergency services.

"We're able, we're empowered, we can do it," she said.

"Women are finding their voice a lot more than they have before."

Having it all, redefined: Every woman gets to have her own definition. Dont let unrealistic expectations bu – The Times of India Blog

Posted: at 1:29 pm

Indra Nooyi, the first woman CEO of PepsiCo and an epitome of success for millions of women across the globe, claimed in an interview once; I dont think women can have it all. I just dont think so. We pretend we have it all. We pretend we can have it all. Along similar lines, in a 2016 article titled No, women cant have it all, Anne-Marie Slaughter, a renowned American international lawyer, talked about the challenges she faced when balancing professional success with familial responsibilities and why she could not have it all.

As evident then, having it all is a phrase used exclusively in the context of women who juggle a professional career (typically a high-paying and respectable one) with a family, without having to sacrifice one for another. It is often seen as an ideal that all women aspire to and only a select few can accomplish, and the two most important variables that go into achieving this ideal are a great family and a great career. Such a formulation of having it all for women is deeply problematic for several reasons.

First, if you are a single woman, a single mother, a childfree married woman, or a homemaker, then based on this definition, you do not have a shot at having it all. This is an immensely reductive definition of success, which essentially works by exclusion. For instance, according to Gallup world poll data aggregated from 2014-20, 23% of the worlds female population is currently married without any children, 16% is single, and 13% are single mothers. So are we to assume that these women, who comprise 52% of the worlds female population, cant have it all until they get married and/ or have children?

If having it all refers to a womans happiness and well-being, then why cant a single woman, a single mother, a childfree woman, or a homemaker be seen as having it all? More so because the existing research about the correlation between happiness and working full time with a family for women is, at best, contradictory.

A 2019 study carried out by a group of researchers from the University of Manchester and the University of Essex revealed that women with two children who are working full time are, on average, 40% more stressed out than those who are single but also working full time. It is quite plausible then that a single woman who works part-time has a more fulfilling and satisfying life than one who is married, has children, and works a high-powered corporate job. The former could be spending her time reading books, travelling, and gaining new experiences while the latter could be enmeshed in an endless quagmire of phone calls, household concerns, and business conferences.

The point being that there is no single definition of happiness and success, and they mean different things for different people. The reductive notion that only women who have both a career and a family can be considered as successful and/ or happy ignores the complexity of human personalities and desires. Also, it is heteronormative to the core.

If you are a single professional woman, then to have it all you need to have a partner and subsequently children. And if you are a married woman with a career, then having it all becomes a patriarchal shorthand for doing it all, especially if you have limited access to childcare or are still climbing the professional ladder. It implies that you need to excel at your workplace, then be back in time, go on playdates with your children, and follow it up by reading bedtime stories as you tuck them in bed. Unrealistic expectations like these set working mothers up for disappointment and guilt, and any rational person should be able to see through the exploitative intent of such a formulation of a successful woman.

Unfortunately, not only are such unrealistic expectations from professional women accepted within society, they are glorified. There is no glory in drudgery, and that is exactly what having it all encompasses for a regular, middle-class woman who wishes to climb the professional ladder while managing a family.

Therefore, it is high time that we redefine the notion of having it all for women to make it more inclusive and kinder. Such a redefinition should ensure that every woman on the planet, whether trans, disabled, cis-gendered, straight, homosexual, single, married, childfree, old, widowed, divorced, and so on has a reasonable shot at achieving it. And the only way to do it would be to let each woman decide, for herself, her definition of having it all.

Doing this would provide society with myriad definitions of having it all, and pose a daunting challenge to apologists of patriarchy who want professional women to believe that to be happy, they need a family. It would also undercut the notion held by those among feminists who believe that the only way for a woman to have an enriching life is to climb the professional ladder.

So, for all the women reading this, chances are you already have it all but even if you feel you dont, make sure that you define it for yourself rather than letting society do it for you. And once you do that, you will realise that having it all is not as challenging as it is made out to be, and the journey towards achieving it will be just as beautiful and enriching as the goal.

Lessons in freedom focus on the past – Forest Park Review

Posted: at 1:28 pm

Freedom is not a gift from heaven you have to fight for it every day. These words from Simon Wiesenthal are just one of the quotes about freedom and human rights displayed on screens in the Mobile Museum of Tolerance (MMOT), which visited Forest Park last week.

Forest Park middle school students in District 91 were some of the first in the state to experience lessons from the past in the MMOT on March 4 and 5.

The MMOT is a museum on wheels, a collaboration between the Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) and the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to bring important lessons about civil rights and the Holocaust directly to schools and communities across Illinois. The MMOT website says it was modeled after the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centers Tour for Humanity bus, which was launched in 2013 and has visited schools all across Canada. But the MMOT is the first of its kind of the United States.

MMOT will utilize innovative technology and interactive lessons to bring its message of tolerance directly to Illinois communities, reads the website. With a plan to visit around 150 schools and communities each year, the MMOT hopes to inspire thousands of Illinoisans to stand up to hate and strive toward positive social change.

On Thursday, D91 middle school students learning remotely watched a remote broadcast of a civil rights presentation from the MMOT, a video the Review watched inside the mobile theater with D91 Principal Tiffany Brunson and Assistant Principal Eric Beltran and several PTO members.

After the video, facilitator Alison Slovin, Midwest director for the Simon Wiesenthal Center, engaged students in a conversation about the video. She shared her own experiences and that of her daughter who have faced prejudice as Jews.

Slovin talked about the role bystanders play in issues such as civil rights and discrimination, and Brunson said that in the district, students are taught to be upstanders, who defend others in a safe way, always going to an adult if they need help.

On Friday, students who are attending classes in-person three days a week got to visit the museum in person, donning masks and watching a video about the Holocaust. Again, the video presentation was followed up with a discussion.

Its the follow-up thats important.

You cant teach these concepts in a bubble; they should be followed up by a conversation, said Suzy Dees, director of professional learning from West 40. All the things that students think of later, after watching the presentation, is where the real opportunity to learn is.

We are very excited about the MMOT coming to FPMS, said Brunson. We have such a diverse student population in Forest Park and we must all learn to recognize and appreciate our differences.

Superintendent Lou Cavallo said the MMOT is absolutely essential for our community. He added, The Mobile Museum of Tolerance (MMOT) visit fits perfectly with our Equity Imperative mission of nurturing dialogue around all issues of inequity.
