How to Self Host Jitsi Meet With Docker [Step by Step Guide]
Posted: March 11, 2021 at 12:15 pm
Jitsi Meet is an open source videoconferencing software that you can self-host. It is a good alternative to proprietary services like Google Meet or Zoom.
Jitsi Meet can be integrated with other open source tools like Nextcloud, Rocket.Chat or Synapse (Matrix implementation) to give you a comprehensive solution.
With some limitations, Jitsi Meet can be used for free on their server. For premium features, you can opt for Jitsi as a Service from Jitsi developers. You may also deploy it on your own server? I'll help you with the self-hosting part.
Deploying Jitsi is incredibly easy with Docker. I am going to show you the steps for Jitsi deployment. I'll cover both reverse proxy and regular method.
How to Use Nginx Reverse Proxy With Multiple Docker Apps
Learn how you can deploy multiple web services on the same server using Nginx reverse proxy and docker containers.
There are a few things that need to be taken care of before proceeding.
Basic knowledge of Docker and containers: This isn't a must, like all of our tutorials, but nice to have.
A custom domain: This deployment won't be IP-served, that is I will walk you through the deployment under an actual domain (or subdomain) with HTTPS. Deployments like http://[some IP]:[some port] are fine for testing, but don't serve any purpose in these guides.
A Linux server either a physical one or in the cloud: I recommend using Linode but you can use any other provider like DigitalOcean, Vultr or UpCloud. Deploying under AWS can be very platform-specific and I won't be talking about that here.
As per official recommendation, a server with 4 GB memory with a dual-core processor would be suitable for around 10-20 users.
Linode | The Independent Open Cloud for Developers
Our mission is to accelerate innovation by making cloud computing simple, affordable, and accessible to all.
DigitalOcean The developer cloud
Helping millions of developers easily build, test, manage, and scale applications of any size faster than ever before.
Optionally, our reverse proxy setup: If you want to put it behind a reverse proxy so that you can deploy several web services on the same server. If Jitsi is the only application that's going to run on the server, you don't need the reverse proxy.
Having a domain name isn't enough. You need to make sure the DNS records are in place as well. For this tutorial, I'm going to use a domain openexperiment.in which I've had lying around for quite a while.
Make sure you change all instances of the domain from the examples to your domain.
Once you have a domain and deployed a server (not with Jitsi, just the server), gather the server's IP addresses (IPv4 & IPv6 both), and add A and AAAA records for each respectively. After that's done, you'll also need to add a CNAME record. You can add a specific subdomain or like me, add a wildcard entry (if you are hosting it on the main domain).
See the screenshot below if you are still confused. I blurred the actual IP addresses (I am very secretive ... shhh).
You may have to wait some time for the DNS changes to take effect. You can check that using the ping command.
ping the domain until you see your server's IP address like this -
You can also use the dig command to check the DNS records.
You should see something like the following
Before moving forward I believe it's helpful to know what these components are, and why they're important, along with which ones you're going to be using for this deployment.
If you don't care for this, obviously skip to the deployment section of this article.
jitsi/web:latest: The web UI of Jitsi Meet, which you see on your browser, is inside this image. Along with Nginx for the webserver.
jitsi/prosody:latest: This is the XMPP server, this is what's responsible for the audio/video calls or the text chats. This can be considered the heart of Jitsi.
jitsi/jicofo:latest: The focus component of the XMPP server, responsible for managing video sessions between the participants and the videobridge, in other words, this is what manages the conferences. This is another mandatory component of Jitsi.
jitsi/jvb:latest: The Jitsi Videobridge is responsible for relaying the incoming video channels to all the participants.
These are the mandatory parts of an operational Jitsi deployment, and I will only be using them for this guide. There are other components like Jibri, Jigasi, but since they're optional, I'm going to leave them out for now.
Enough reading, it's time for some hands-on work.
If you're going to deploy this alongside a reverse proxy, make sure you have that set up before approaching this one.
How to Use Nginx Reverse Proxy With Multiple Docker Apps
Learn how you can deploy multiple web services on the same server using Nginx reverse proxy and docker containers.
This repository contains all the files that we're going to need for this deployment (with obviously some modifications).
Clone the repository and change your PWD to the cloned directory.
Since you are using Docker, you have to modify some environment variables. Start by copying the example configuration file.
Now open the .env file, and look at the first 6 environment variables.
Since all these components are basically some sort of servers running in containers, you need a way to make sure the servers are really who they say they are. These secrets are there for that reason. The clients must authenticate first before establishing a connection.
You don't have to set these secrets by yourself. There's already a script there to make your life easier. Run the following command while you're inside the repository directory
Once run, you can reopen the .env file, and the secrets should be filled out.
You won't be needing all those secrets for this deployment, but leave them be, there's no need to remove or comment them out.
There now are going to be three subsections here, one for the common variable assignments (reverse proxy or no reverse proxy), another for the reverse proxy, and the last one for no reverse proxy. All of them go to the .env file.
Here are the variables common to both deployment methods and you add them in the .env file.
CONFIG: You can change the value of this, but it isn't necessary. The value of this variable is a directory in your host, which will be bind-mounted inside the containers to store persistent data. So modifying this is entirely up to you.
PUBLIC_URL: The domain Jitsi is going to be hosted on (with the protocol). In my case the value is https://meet.openexperiment.in
ENABLE_AUTH: Do you want authentication? With authentication, the user is going to have to put in a username and a password before they can join or create a meeting. If so, uncomment this line and make sure it's set to 1.
AUTH_TYPE: If you'd set ENABLE_AUTH to 1, then set this one to "internal". I won't go over LDAP or JWT authentication in this article.
RESTART_POLICY: Restart policy of the containers. The default is unless-stopped. I prefer always or on-failure.
TZ: Set this to your system's timezone. Since my servers are running in UTC timezone, I don't have to change it.
If you are not using reverse proxy, you should add these variables to the .env file:
HTTP_PORT, HTTPS_PORT: Change these to 80 and 443 respectively. These are the ports your container is going to bind its to.
ENABLE_LETSENCRYPT: Set this to 1, you need HTTPS.
LETSENCRYPT_DOMAIN & LETSENCRYPT_EMAIL: The domain your instance will be hosted on, and your email id for your certificate-related notifications.
ENABLE_HTTP_REDIRECT: Set this to 1, HTTP traffic must be relayed to HTTPS.
ENABLE_HSTS: This will, in a way force the browsers to use a trusted connection. Set this to 1.
If you have opted for the reverse proxy, you should add these variables to the .env file:
DISABLE_HTTPS: Since HTTPS is going to be handled by your reverse proxy's web server, you don't need to have HTTPS enabled from Jitsi itself.
ENABLE_HTTP_REDIRECT: Not necessary, set this to 0. HTTP/HTTPS is going to be handled by our reverse proxy.
VIRTUAL_HOST & LETSENCRYPT_HOST: These variables are not there by default. Add these, and for the values, use the domain name where your instance is going to be hosted. For more information read my revere proxy article.
Open the file docker-compose.yml in your favorite text editor.
The only service definition that needs editing is the web service. Modify it according to the following list
Assuming the network name is net, change it to whatever you set yours to.
Once all the editing is done, you can deploy Jitsi with docker-compose up -d command.
Make sure your reverse proxy containers are running IF you opted for reverse proxy method.
You are almost done with the Jitsi Meet deployment except for the last step which is to create authenticated users for your Jitsi server.
If you enabled authentication (with ENABLE_AUTH), you're going to need to register the users before you can use Jitsi.
To do so is quite simple. Head over to the cloned repository directory and run a command similar to the following
You can also remove a user using the unregister command like I've shown here:
Finally, you can go ahead and check the Jitsi Meet front end on the designated URL in a web browser:

Eczema: What causes it, the symptoms and how to treat it – CNET
Posted: at 12:13 pm
Eczema affects about one in 10 people in the United States.
About one in 10 Americans will get eczema at some point in their lives, and about 31.6 million Americans are currently suffering from it. Eczema is common, yet no matter how long you've had it, dealing with eczema is never a walk in the park. Not only is it physically uncomfortable or even painful, it's emotionally distressing since often the symptoms can affect your appearance, and it can feel impossible to find relief.
If you suffer from eczema (like I do), you know how it feels to go through an outbreak and find little to no solutions for the symptoms, and once they do resolve (if they do for a bit) you live in fear of your next outbreak. My last major flare was around the holidays when my entire face broke out in red, itchy, patches that extended down the sides of my neck. Not only did it feel terrible, it pretty much ruined my holiday since I felt so distressed about the rash during a time when I wanted to celebrate.
Although we don't yet know what exactly causes eczema, and there's no cure -- we know a lot about how to manage it, treat the symptoms, and help identify triggers to help prevent future flares. Keep reading below for more insight from a dermatologist about what you need to know about eczema, the symptoms and current treatments.
Our Health & Wellness newsletter puts the best products, updates and advice in your inbox.
"Eczema is a common itchy rash that occurs on the skin. Eczema can appear anywhere on the body, however it typically occurs most commonly in skin folds on the extremities," says Dr. Jared Jagdeo, board-certified dermatologist and chief medical officer at Ever/Body.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, there are seven different types of eczema, and you can have several different kinds at once.
The seven different types of eczema:
Eczema can affect different areas of your body including your arms, hands, neck or face.
Since eczema technically represents a group of different skin rashes, the symptoms can vary with each different type of rash and for each individual person. But according to Mayo Clinic, in general the symptoms include:
People with eczema sometimes experience flares (i.e. it comes and goes), and some people have it chronically.
In general, we don't know the exact cause of eczema yet. But it is thought to be associated with the immune system, genetics and also environmental factors. According to the National Eczema Association, most eczema cases can be explained by "a combination of genes and environmental triggers."
According to Jagdeo, things like changing seasons or exposure to irritants can also trigger symptoms. "Eczema can worsen with the change in seasons and [with] skin irritants such as fragrances," says Jagdeo.
Common eczema triggers, according to the National Eczema Foundation:
There is currently no cure for eczema, but the symptoms can be treated or managed in a variety of ways. One way to help prevent and treat flares is by trying to identify your triggers, which you can discuss with your doctor -- ideally a board-certified dermatologist who can help you identify triggers and proper treatment for your eczema.
"[Use] gentle skin care with emollients and avoid skin irritants such as fragrance-containing products," says Jagdeo.
Doctors can also prescribe you products to treat eczema that you apply directly to the skin. Typically these are "topical medications known as anti-inflammatory steroids to soothe the skin," according to Jagdeo.
"Immune modifying treatments such as oral or injectable medications [can] help improve the skin by decreasing the immune mediated inflammation that causes eczema," adds Jagdeo.
Over-the-counter creams and products that are marketed for eczema can sometimes help, but you should always see a dermatologist first to help determine the correct treatment and products for your specific situation. "Board certified dermatologists are experts in eczema and skin care and can help recommend OTC treatments to improve your eczema, along with prescription based recommendations as medically necessary," says Jagdeo.
OTC treatments Dr. Jagdeo recommends:

Tears of relief with breakthrough eczema drug now affordable – Northern Star
Posted: at 12:13 pm
Australians suffering from a severe form of eczema will now have access to a life changing medicine through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.
Page MP Kevin Hogan said it would help support to patients and their families.
The medicine Dupixent (dupilumab) will be available to Australians over 12 years of age living with severe atopic dermatitis, also referred to as eczema, who are not adequately controlled on topical therapy.
Eczema Support Australia managing director, Melanie Funk, said it was "the best news ever".
"There will be tears of relief that this breakthrough medicine is now available for Australians with severe eczema, regardless of their ability to pay," she said.
"We offer our heartfelt thanks to the Federal Government for listening to many stories of the agony of life with eczema, and for subsidising a therapy described as 'life-changing' by those who have received early and compassionate access.
"Australians with severe eczema and their families suffer a significant financial burden due to the ongoing cost of treating eczema, as well as lost employment due to the condition, so financial distress is an area of need which this subsidy will help address.
"We're committed to improving the practical support available for the eczema community and having more treatment options that are subsidised is a critical part of that."
Dupixent is the first biologic therapy for severe eczema.
It is injected once a fortnight for the rest of a person's life.
The subsidy reduces the annual cost of the medicine from $22,800 to just $41.30 or $6.60 for concession card holders per prescription.
Mr Hogan said the government would invest more than $270 million in this new PBS medicine listing with more than 3600 people expected to benefit each year.

AllergyEasy Urges Early Intervention Through Kid-safe Allergy Drops to Limit Asthma – PRUnderground
Posted: at 12:13 pm
While the wait and see approach may work for some aspects of kids health, research is showing that it is not helpful for pediatric allergies, which can progress from eczema to other complications like asthma without early intervention. AllergyEasy is helping to stop this progression with a child-friendly alternative to allergy shots.
AllergyEasy provides family doctors and pediatricians with a turnkey allergy treatment program. This allows the doctors to prescribe sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT), which is a needle-free, hassle-free alternative to allergy shots. Like allergy shots, SLIT desensitizes the body to allergens in the environment so that it can tolerate them without overreacting. But instead of antigen being injected into the skin, it is dispensed as under-the-tongue drops. And because it is safer than shots, it can be taken at home rather than at the doctors office.
SLIT is particularly important for young children, who may not be eligible for allergy shots because of safety concerns. However, research on a phenomenon known as the allergic march shows that if kids allergies continue untreated, they could face worsening allergic rhinitis and asthma as they grow.
Studies on the allergic march are making clear that its not just nice to intervene early but that its essential in preventing allergy-related surgeries and illnesses and chronic allergic diseases later in life, said Stuart Agren, M.D., Founder and President of AllergyEasy.
The term allergic march or atopic march is used to describe the progression of atopic disorders, such as eczema in babies to allergic rhinitis and asthma in children, teens and adults.
Agren cited early studies on this topic, including the PAT Study, which was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in 2002. It showed that pollen immunotherapy reduces the development of asthma in children with seasonal allergies. A 10-year follow-up showed long-term clinical effects with significant improvement persisting seven years after children stopped their immunotherapy treatment.
Another study published in the World Allergy Organization Journal in 2008 centered specifically on sublingual immunotherapy, predicting that this new promising treatment will modify the severity of atopic eczema in infants and young children and will decrease the risk for the eventual development of asthma and thus prevent the consequences of the allergic march.
Allergy drops have been shown to be safe for children under age 5, allowing doctors to intervene early for children who suffer from allergies from young ages. Shots, on the other hand, arent usually prescribed until children are at least 7 years old due to safety concerns.
Doctors in 32 states prescribe AllergyEasys sublingual immunotherapy allergy drops. Unlike many allergy shot programs, the drops contain a comprehensive mix of allergens, including dust, mold, pet dander and the countrys most prevalent pollens. This ensures thorough coverage against the full range of allergy triggers, not just a few local pollens.
AllergyEasy drops are available to patients of all ages with a prescription from a physician. To learn more about AllergyEasy and how the pediatricians who prescribe it are helping to halt the allergic march, visit http://www.AllergyEasy.com or call (877) 276-3393.
About AllergyEasy
AllergyEasy helps allergy doctors around the country provide sublingual immunotherapy (allergy drops) to their patients who suffer with allergies to pollen and food allergies (including dairy allergy, wheat allergy, nut allergy, fruit allergy and more.) AllergyEasy can connect patients to a doctor in their area who offers sublingual allergy treatment.

Givaudan Active Beauty presents Omegablue, an upcycled ingredient dedicated to skin repair – Cosmetics Business
Posted: at 12:13 pm
8-Mar-2021
Ingredients
Omegablue is part of the Givaudan Active Beautys upcycling collection launched in October 2020
Givaudan Active Beauty launches Omegablue, a cosmetic ingredient created from upcycled wild bilberries used for advanced skin repair.
A plant that grows in Central and Northern Europe, weve upcycled the seeds to craft a natural ingredient to revert skin dryness, irritation, and desquamation caused by lipid barrier damage.
As waste reduction is a new sustainable standard today, consumers are re-evaluating their daily routines, including their beauty regimes, to contribute to minimising waste overall.
Actually, beauty consumers are already acting in that direction as cosmetic products containing recycled or upcycled ingredients are appealing to 69% of them, mostly in Brazil (80%) and China (74%).
Consumers are ready to go forward, pushing upcycling beauty products as a top trend for the years to come, without compromising the main needs of their skin protection.
Traditionally used by the food industry for their juice and sugar, bilberries are also an amazing source of anthocyanidins extracted from the pulp and fruit skin for the supplement and pharma industries.
Furthermore, the tiny seeds of the berries contain up to 20% of linoleic acid (omega-6) and -linolenic acid (omega-3) in an optimal ratio; these compounds being both known for their capabilities to improve hydration and skin barrier functionality.
Giada Maramaldi, Personal Care Category Manager says: "Crafted by a supercritical CO2 procedure in an upcycled process from the seeds of this unique Vaccinum myrtillus berry, Omegablue was developed as a topical soothing agent for sensitive and damaged skin. It effectively calms skin discomfort in a transient or curative way and contains sebum-like essential fatty acids forming a protective barrier from external agents."
The efficacy of Omegablue has been shown in surfactant-induced depletion during clinical tests. After 3 days from the damage, the treated area has completely restored the skin barrier function.
Omegablue is also significantly performant on chronic inflammation challenged skin (psoriasis) as it significantly decreases erythema severity, down to 27% and scales formation by 28% in four weeks.

McMaster-incubated company using brainwaves to test cannabis impairment – TheSpec.com

What can brainwaves tell us about a cannabis high?
Zentrela Inc., a Hamilton-based startup, wants to find out by measuring cognitive impairment using neural signals and machine learning.
Last month, the company received $850,000 in seed funding to build its data-as-a-service platform for producers and retailers with a focus on mapping the effects of cannabis 2.0 products like extracts and edibles.
Israel Gasperin, a former graduate student in McMaster Universitys entrepreneurship program, founded the startup through the schools business incubator, The Forge.
Gasperin was initially attracted to neurotechnology research in 2016, as the looming legalization of cannabis raised questions about how it would shape safety protocols in the transportation sector, which also grapples with driver fatigue issues.
Modern drug tests measure the presence and concentration of cannabinoids such as THC known as the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis in a consumers saliva, urine or blood. These cannabis compounds can linger for more time than the high, Gasperin said, spurring the company to create a test that actually measures drug effects, rather than concentration levels of a drug substance in the body.
The company raised $1.2 million from government agencies and non-profits, including the Ontario Brain Institute, in 2019, to build an electroencephalogram, or EEG, prototype called the Cognalyzer, which collects brainwaves from research participants.
Gasperin teamed up with Dan Bosnyak, a neuroscientist and technical director of the universitys LIVE (Large Interactive Virtual Environment) Lab, a performance hall where researchers can test and investigate wide-ranging behavioural responses, social interactions and technologies.
Bosnyak, Zentrelas chief scientific officer, has been researching brain signal analysis and EEG technology for more than 25 years, and says the wearable technology industry is expanding data-collection capacity.
Zentrela is collecting data to the same standards that I would conduct in my lab at McMaster, Bosnyak said, adding that with commercial projects, theres a certain give-and-take. I have my standards that I try to enforce.
The company commissioned an arms-length evaluation of their technology last year, he said, and hopes to soon have the trial results published in a peer-reviewed journal.
Because we knew that our technology was kind of groundbreaking and people might not necessarily accept that, if we just said that it works, he said, adding that the external research companys test results are basically the same as what were getting in internal research.

Its latest $850,000 in funding is comes from Calgary-based investment firm Jornic Ventures, and will support the creation of a database documenting the effects of cannabis products. Gasperin said the plan is to license product effect data to retailers.
Thats the value that we are adding to producers so they can differentiate their products and explain to consumers in a scientific way, what are the effects that their products will create on them, because that is our end goal: to promote safe and responsible cannabis use, Gasperin said.
