People are always looking for an accessible, prescription-free aid for pain, insomnia, anxiety and other day-to-day irritations. In recent years, CBD has emerged as a hopeful cure-all. Cannabidiol found in marijuana, more commonly known as CBD, has become a craze in recent years, with U.S. sales of CBD supplements increasing year-over-year by 57 percent in 2018.

Countless influencers, including Kim Kardashian, have pushed CBD to their following. However, some neurologists are skeptical of the social media traction CBD products have gained, even calling CBD vendors snake oil salesmen, taking advantage of people who may confuse relief from CBD oils, rubs, creams, gummies, and other products with the placebo effect. However, in a study released this year by the National Library of Medicine, researchers say CBD does have real potential this time as a therapy to help curb cognitive decline and alleviate some Alzheimers symptoms through changing the chemistry in the brain.

Interleukin 33 (IL-33) is a protein in the brain that, at high levels, has been linked to beta-amyloid buildup, a biomarker of Alzheimers. The TREM-2 protein, encoded by the TREM-2 gene, is also linked to the neurodegenerative disease.

According to the study authors, both of these proteins were affected by CBD in a way that helped brain cell communication.

The study used a mice model to investigate CBDs impact on the brain, in which mice with Alzheimers would choose between items they recognize and items that are newly introduced.

Dr. Hesam Khodadadi, the studys first author, said in a press release that people who are living with Alzheimers often suffer from stiffness or an impeded gait. Mice in their lab with the disease, Khodadadi says, run in an endless tight circle, but with CBD treatment, this behavior stopped.

Researchers gave high doses of CBD through injection into the mices stomachs every other day for two weeks. As a result, they found that CBD normalized levels of IL-33, defending new findings that the protein can be regulatory to the immune response depending on the environment, lessening inflammation and restoring the immune system to homeostasis, according to Dr. Babak Baban, an immunologist and associate dean for research in the Dental College of Georgia as well as a corresponding author of the study.

The study also found that CBD improved the poignancy of TREM-2, as low levels of it are connected to Alzheimers but after the CBD treatment, levels of IL-33 escalated sevenfold and TREM-2 by tenfold in the mice model.

CBD is a chemical in marijuana, a substance only fully legal in 23 states and the District of Columbia, but its role in medicine continues to grow. Currently, it drives an industry valued at nearly 25 billion and is expected to grow by nearly 15 percent within the decade. Researchers have looked into the benefits and pitfalls as a means to treat symptoms of Alzheimers.

Scientists at the University Medical Center in Goettingen, Germany, found that the other key component in marijuana aside from CBD the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, THC improved the aptitude of genetically engineered mice who mirror symptoms of Alzheimers on different memory tests. The mice received a synthetic form of THC for six weeks, and when tested on their memory, their success was easily comparable to the mice without Alzheimers. These mice also lacked the loss of neurons and had a 20 percent decrease in their atypical beta-amyloid plaques.

Researcher Yvonne Bouter from the University Medical Center told NPR that cannabis does have potential to help curb symptoms of Alzheimers. However, the studies were conducted in mice and not in people. We did this same experiment in healthy mice and they had problems learning, Bouter said.

The main difference between THCs psychoactive effects on marijuana users is that the CBD in marijuana reflects the relaxed and fatigued response, while THC is responsible for the altering of ones brain connections for a fixed amount of time.

Scientists from the newest study will continue to research CBDs assistance in Alzheimers symptoms, but their next stage will help determine optimal doses, if using CBD in the early stages of cognitive decline could slow its progression, and if delivering the CBD using an inhaler would assist in delivering the chemical directly to the brain.

Cannabidiol, the supremely popular cannabis compound touted as a general wellness cure-all known as CBD, may be effective in treating cocaine addiction, according to recent research.

Unlike dependence on opiates or alcohol, there are no pharmaceutical treatments for addiction to cocaine, which the National Institutes on Drug Abuse calls powerfully addictive. (Whether its the substance itself, the experiences of the user, or a combination of the two that leads someone down the path to the chronic disease known as addiction is a separate question.)

Building on other preclinical research that suggests cannabidiol (or CBD) may be useful in treating cocaine dependency, scientists in Spain discovered that lab mice treated with CBD were less likely to start re-using cocaine after a period of non-use, even after they were exposed to triggers associated with re-use.

These results suggest that CBD could reduce reinstatement to cocaine-seeking after a period of abstinence, the researchers wrote in findings published earlier this month in the Journal of Psychopharmacology.

While cautioning that the results are very preliminaryand contradict other recent research into CBD treatments for cocaine addiction, conducted in humansresearchers not involved with the study contacted for this article agreed that the findings suggest CBD may be a valuable tool in treating a variety of substance-abuse disorders. They also agree that research also supports anecdotes from treatment centers as well as cannabis advocates who tout cannabis as a replacement therapy for people trying to wean themselves off of other, far more dangerous drugs.

This study is consistent with a growing body of animal research suggesting a role for CBD across various addictive spectrum disorders including stimulant use disorders like cocaine and amphetamine, said Stephen Ross, a physician and associate professor of psychiatry at New York Universitys Grossman School of Medicine, where he is a co-director of psychedelic research. This preclinical study helps set the stage for the use of CBD to treat cocaine use disorders in humans.

In the study, psychologists and psychobiologists at the University of Valencia and the Carlos III Health Institute in Madrid investigated two triggers: a stressor called social defeat and cocaine priming, in which lab mice with a habit were given a dose and then left to see whether they would re-use. In both instances, CBD blocked this stress-induced reinstatement, researchers found.

More notably, perhaps, was that CBD seemed to reverse a change in the mices dopamine neurons associated with cocaine priming. Drug abuse is known to change brain chemistry to encourage more use; could CBD reverse the brain reprogramming that leads a user to become addicted?

Possibly, but also maybe not. (This is how preliminary research works.) In a separate study, 40 adults with moderate to severe cocaine-use disorder were given an 800-milligram daily CBD treatment. And all but three participants relapsed to cocaine, according to findings published by Canadian researchers in the journal Addiction. Despite this, researchers contacted for this article maintained that CBD still has promise in addiction treatment.

The fact that one study in humans did not show positive findings does not necessarily mean that cannabidiol is not helpful, said Dr. Ziva Cooper, research director at the Cannabis Research Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. The take-home message here, really, is that were in the infancy of this research, in understanding how CBD might be helpful for substance-use disorder.

The mice study that found CBD was helpful in reducing re-use among mice exposed to stress might mean that CBD could help humans for whom anxiety is a trigger for re-use. The mice study is a nice positive signal that adds to the evidence that CBD might be helpful in reducing some aspects that lead to relapse, Cooper added.

The study does not mean that smoking weed or taking whatever CBD concoction thats available online or at your local wellness merchant is a viable addiction-treatment option. There are vast differences between cannabis flower strains high in CBD as well as between CBD oilnone of which are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Still, for addiction-treatment clinicians without any chemical interventions available, CBD holds some promise. And with interest in the cannabis compound still booming, more studies will follow.
