Taapsee Pannu in Thappad to Roshan Matthew in CU Soo..atik Gandhi in Scam 1992 The best performers of 2020 – Firstpost

Posted: at 11:52 am

From Pratik Gandhi in Scam 1992, Tripti Dimri in Bulbbul to Fahadh Faasil in Trance, Taapsee Pannu and Pavail Gulati in Thappad, here's a list of top 10 performers of 2020.

2020 has evidently been a difficult year. The global pandemic led to a tectonic shift in life as we know it. Those privileged like us, with all amenities at our disposal, were locked inside the comfort of our homes. With theatres and cafes shuttered, and public gatherings prohibited, we were forced to seek out entertainment escapism on our smartphones. And boy, did we watch (and discover) a lot of content.

As we stand at the wee end looking back at the year that was, we scourge the depths of movie calendars and streaming sites to bring some of the best performances of 2020.

Roshan Matthew in CU Soon

(left to right) Darshana Rajendram, Roshan Matthew and Fahadh Faasil in CU Soon

CU Soon, shotduring the coronavirus -induced lockdown, is the aptest representation of how our lives contracted and folded itself into our smartphones and laptop screens. Produced by Fahadh Faasils production company, CU Soon uncovers the heinousness of sex trade through a seemingly innocuous plot of virtual dating. Almost the entire film plays out on text messages and video calls from inside homes and office buildings, which means the actors were not at the liberty of dialing up their charm in a song and dance sequence. Roshan Matthew plays Jimmy Kurian, a besotted lover who proposes to a woman a week after they meet on a dating site. Evidently, his happily-ever-after does not pan out as he had hoped, andKurian spirals down as secrets come tumbling out of the closet. The camera remains steadfastly focused on Matthew's face; and the actor emotes with every muscle on his face whether it be the goofiness of a hopeless romantic, the anxiousness of not being able to locate his girlfriend, the confusion over her identity, the fear of getting arrested in a foreign country or the disgust after certain revelations. The riveting narrative and the experimental format aside, it is Roshan Matthews utterly believable performance as a somewhat nave, closet misogynist, yet vulnerable millennial that makes CU Soon thoroughly engaging.

Jaideep Ahlawat inPaatal Lok

Jaideep Ahal

Paatal Lokis arguably one of the best series to have come out in 2020 not only because it did not shy away from exposing the grim realities the privileged would best keep stonewalled but also because the makers refused to assume an entitled stance and promise a hypothetic resolution. Amid the deafening cacophony of greed, corruption, and self-aggrandisation, Jaideep Ahlawats Hathiram Chaudhary emerged as the moral centre, questioning and getting sucked into the ebb and flow of systemic corruption in equal measure.Hathiram is thequintessential common man Naseeruddin Shah epitomised in Neeraj PandeysA Wednesday, and he quickly realises that his police uniform is more of an Achilles heel than kryptonite. Ahlawat imbued Hathiram with fallibility and compassion, integrity and irritability and out came a character that was so holistic it was difficult to imagine that he was just a pencilled in description on paper once.

Arshad Warsi inAsur

Arshad Warsi in a still from Asur

Critics have long argued that Arshad Warsi has much more to offer beyond his Circuit (Munna Bhaifranchise) and Madhav (Golmaalseries) stints sparks of which were seen inIshqiyaandJolly LLB but came front and centre inAsur. Also starring Barun Sobti and Ridhi Dogra,Asurrevolves around a serial killer with a penchant for religious fanaticism. The part could've easily rolled over to the hero territory. Warsi'sDhananjay Rajputhad the smarts, the screen time, and the dialogues usually mouthed by our garden variety heroes. He is intriguing not much is shared about his life before this case. Above all, he operates on the side of the law, the side usually confused with the right side, or alternatively, the side audience sympathies are intended to lie with. However, neither the story, which is more layered than your gourmet tiramisu, neither the character, ever tread the morality line. Warsi's performance is a masterclass on how to artfully underplay a character, sustaining both the intrigue and not taking over the show with his starry aura. He sheds every ounce of filminess to become one with the cobwebbed, half-lit CBI offices and dingy bylanes of Varanasi.

Scam 1992: A Harshad Mehta Story, ever since its release, has been showered with words of adulation, and rightfully so. Hansal Mehta deftly turned the dry as a bone subject of the share market into a nail-biting biographical thriller series. For those who've lived under the rock to not have been familiar with Harshad Mehta's array of handiwork (this writer included),Scam 1992gives an intimate portrayal of the man he was behind his several titles Big Bull, Einstein, cobra killer cheetah and Amitabh Bachchan of Dalal Street. Pratik Gandhiplayed the larger-than-life Mehta with acute attention to his mannerisms, fromthe stockbroker's gait and speech, to how he flaunted his signature sideways smirk after outwitting the best in business. Gandhis ease in front of the camera and his knowledge about the craft of acting fit effortlessly with Mehtas natural charm, keeping the viewers hooked to their devices through the shows whopping 10-episode run. Further, what may also have worked in Gandhis favour was his audiences relative unfamiliarity with his body of work in Gujarati theatre and cinema, enabling absolute suspension of disbelief.

Taapsee Pannu, Pavail Gulati inThappad

Taapsee Pannu and Pavail Gulati in Thappad

Anubhav Sinha's new lease of films his ostensible second innings have all delved into issues frequently sidelined in mainstream cinema for fear of not being palatable enough. While bothMulkandArticle 15dealt with conspicuous antagonistsIslamophobia and casteism Thappad's villain was more insidious. Subtle yet bold, Sinha was the first filmmaker to bolster a worthy conversion on microaggression. But beyond Sinha's featherlight direction and sensitivity in depicting domestic violence, what elevatedThappadwas its performances. Pavail Gulati slipped into the role of an "otherwise loving husband" with ease and aplomb. His comebacks and reactions felt so authentic and organic it shook up our perception of normalcy in a household. His undramatic portrayal of the husband, whether it be expecting his wife to make his tea, or directing his anger about his office colleague at his wife, made him disturbingly real. Similarly, Taapsee Pannuchanneled exceptionalrestraint as a wife living the humdrum life. Even when the character was at her most vulnerable, Taapsee's performance never crossed over to schmaltz or pity bait. Along with Warsi, Pannu and Gulati have taught cinephiles the ropes ofnot actingacting.

Tripti Dimri, Paoli Dam inBulbbul

Tripti Dimri as the titular character in Anvita Dutt's Bulbbul

Much has been said and written about Anvita Dutt's allegorical horror seriesBulbbul, and how it subverted the narrative of violence. Tripti Dimri, who essayed the titular role, hada formidable task to make her character mysterious and vulnerable at the same time. Bulbbul is both fierce and nave; she has agency, but her well-wishers frequently rob her off of it in the garb of caregiving. She is a woman of few words she has learnt that her opinions, much like her prose and her spiritual existence, do not matter to others. Its her corporeality men are after. Dimri, who had shouldered an equally difficult role inLaila Majnu, cakewalks through Bulbbul like its her second nature. Rather than letting verbosity define Bulbbul, Dimri allows her side glances, her cackles, her smirks and her silences speak for her. The role played by Paoli Dam, Binodini, is even trickier, as Binodinisplightis always insinuated, never spelt out. She is the elder daughter-in-law, but as a widow, shes has had to let go of the position of the woman of the house. She continually seeks validation from the men in the family, and not surprisingly, is routinely cast away in favour of the younger and prettier woman. She occupies the lowest rung in a power structure, as a woman and a widow. Hence, she channelises her frustration by underminingBulbbul.Dam treads the tightrope like the seasoned actor she is, humanising Binodini's even most malicious acts. It is to Dam's credit that Binodini evokes as much empathy as Bulbbul.

Josh O'Connor inThe Crownseason 4

Josh O'Connor in a still from The Crown season 4

As global sweetheart Olivia Colman took on the reigns of portraying the British monarch from Claire Foy, the world awaited the outcome with bated breath. Fresh out of her Oscar stint as Queen Mary in Yorgos Lanthimos'The Favourite,Colman was unsurprisingly a treat to watch as a reserved, metered Queen Elizabeth II. But, away from thehubbub around Colman or even Tobias Menzies (who plays the prickly Prince Philip), shone a young, undiscovered talent. Josh O'Connor stepped into the shoes of an awkwardly bent, hesitant Prince Charles. O' Connor embodied the British scion with seamless perfection the neatly tucked palms in his sweaters' front pockets, the slight head bob, and the signature unsure smile were merely a stepping stone to O'Connor's brilliance at physical acting. The actor accurately caught the beat of the insecurities, pain, and trauma of a man caught in between the life he yearns to have, and the one saddled with. O'Connor played Prince Charles with a layered maturity he was a spoilt brat who grew up to be a flawed man riddled with a burdened childhood. From the tricky royal accent to Charles' idiosyncrasies, O'Connor successfullycast off every iota of himself to transform into the Prince-in-waiting. As audiences revelled in the physical similarity between the real and reel characters, critics raved about O'Connor's elegant acting.

Poorna Jagannathan inNever Have I Ever

Poorna Jagannathan in Never Have I Ever

Never Have I Ever,Mindy Kalings coming-of-age dramedy series about a first-generation Indian American teenager earned brownie points for its sharp asbutcher knife humour. But upon release, the show, intended to spotlight the diasporic Indian experience, evoked polarising responses. Many argued that it ended up pandering to stereotypes more than effectively dismantling them. Poorna Jagannathan, who plays Devis widowed mother Nalini, is one character whos undeniably steeped in lazy stereotypes shes a strict disciplinarian obsessed about her daughter enrolling into an Ivy League college. However, Jagannathans Nalini is not just a caricature planted into the narrative to lay focus on Devi's hardships. Nalini is an immigrant just about straddling two cultures, while raising a mercurial teenager daughter. She is consumed by an overwhelming sense of isolation, having lost her husband recently. Unable to navigate the growing distance with her daughter, Naliniresorts toan abrasive parenting approach, monitoring and controlling every aspect of Devis life. Like Devi, Nalini is also desperate to belong. Jagannathan submits herself to Nalini's character, perpetually on the cusp of breaking down, but holding herself together by a bare thread for the sake of her daughter. While Maitreyi Ramakrishnan's Devimay have had sizeably more screen time and dynamism, it was Jagannathan who ensured that even in her most unlikeable moments, Nalinis reactions did not feel unreasonable.

Fahadh Faasil inTrance

Fahadh Faasil in Trance

Trance, directed by Anwar Rasheed, is practically a one-man show. Through his protagonist, essayed by Fahadh Faasil, Rasheedoffers an expos into the business of blind faith. Despite its promising design, complete with a meticulously constructed backstory of the protagonists circumstances,Trancenever really stretches out to reach its dramatic crescendo, and the complexity of the narrative gets increasingly watered down by simplistic resolutions. Notwithstanding the films inconsistency, Faasils performance remained unwaveringly faithful to his character. As the fake godman/guru Pastor Joshua Carlton, Faasil strucklagombalance between an infectious frenzy and a measured intrigue. His extravagant theatricality sits comfortably with the character of a master illusionist selling religion as a drug.

Michaela Coel inI May Destroy You

Michaela Coel in I May Destroy You

If 2019 was the year of Phoebe Waller-Bridges heartbreakingly sardonicFleabag, 2020 belonged to the trailblazingI May Destroy You, Michaela Coels blisteringly funny and passionately fiery drama series woven around the concept of sexual consent. Created, written, co-directed, and starring Coel,I May Destroy Youpresents the fictionalised account of her sexual assault. She plays Arabella, a Twitter famous writer struggling to finish her second book. One night, during a particularly unsuccessful writing episode, Arabella ventures out for spirits for her spirit. Her drink is spiked, and the next morning, her mind can hardly recollect anything except the image of a man forcing himself on her inside a toilet. Coels story is searing and thought-provoking, butI May Destroy Youtakes as much care touphold friendships, autonomy, and mostly, self-acceptance. As the creator, Coel ensures Arabellas journey is as immersive and it is cathartic. Coel infuses Arabella with the millennial nonchalance and the default propensity for escapism she is casually dismissive of her million problems and her virtual persona often trickles over to her real life. But in the moments she lets her taut, perennially chirpy faade slide off, her sore, festering wounds get exposed. Her serrated humour at the most unexpected junctures rends you apart, but it also quietly heals. Its nearly impossible to differentiate her performance as an actor from her accomplishments as the writer-director inI May Destroy You;perhaps because her person from her fictional character often meld to become one. All art, after all, have in them a few pieces of the artist.

Technology that detects whisky’s age is ‘world first’ – The Spirits Business

Posted: at 11:51 am

A team of researchers has joined forces with a technology firm to create what is thought to be the worlds first age verification service for whisky in a bid to tackle counterfeit products.

Everledger and the Scottish Universities Environment Research Centre have created a digital identify for whisky to help cut down on fakes

London-based blockchain company Everledger and the Scottish Universities Environment Research Centre (SUERC) at the University of Glasgow have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to fight fraud in the whisky sector.

The move will see SUERC researchers fit Everledger anti-tamper bottle closures to rare Scotch whiskies. The liquid in each individual bottle will be analysed using SUERCs proprietary technology, which will be connected to the blockchain using near field communication (NFC) tags, resulting in a digital record that certifies the whiskys origin and age.

Sales of collectable bottles of single malt Scotch reached a total of 57.7 million (US$76.6m) in 2018, according to Rare Whisky 101. Researchers at SUERC estimate that as many as 40% of all rare whiskies on the market could be fake. Research released by SUERC in 2018 showed that of 55 bottles of rare Scotch they had tested, 21 were either fake or not distilled in the year stated.

The SUERC has developed a way to accurately determine when whiskies were distilled using radiocarbon dating. By being given access to samples of rare whisky, the team have created a radiocarbon dating curve that is now used to determine the age of all types of vintage whiskies. The technology is able to detect the actual age of whiskies within a few years.

Gordon Cook, head of the SUERC Radiocarbon Laboratory and a professor at the University of Glasgow, said: This method for identifying fake malt whisky samples extends from the removal of small samples through the cork, to alcohol distillation, high-precision analysis and finally, interpretation of the radiocarbon data using a unique calibration curve developed by our laboratory.

This research has been carried out in response to a growing interest in these whiskies that, if genuine, can be worth tens of thousands of pounds per bottle, which may encourage fraudsters to attempt to fake the more expensive brands. Were proud that we are now able to provide the first and only fully secure whisky age verification service in the world with the support of Everledger.

The research team decided to use Everledgers bottle caps and blockchain platform, which was launched in April 2020. Once the radiocarbon testing is complete, researchers add Everledgers NFC-powered tamper detection label to the bottle cap to create a digital identity for the whisky. Through the use of a smartphone, the provenance of the bottle and its lifecycle journey can be viewed.

Dr Elaine Dunbar, research scientist at SUERC, added: One aspect of the process that has eluded us is securing a permanent digital record of a whiskys origin and age. We are therefore absolutely delighted to establish a partnership with Everledger, who will provide a lasting seal and a digital record of the whisky and details of its radiocarbon analysis.

Its the perfect way to provide additional peace of mind for those who choose to have us verify their whiskies, and to help cut down on the trade in fakes.

2021 Supply Chain Technology Trends To Watch – Forbes

The Technology Maturity Curve

There are some young supply chain technologies that are getting a lot of buzz. But how mature are these technologies?Do they have a proven ROI? Are they worth piloting? Or can companies safely ignore them?

There are also promising technologies that we expect will deliver great value. But we cant document the ROI or other benefits at this point.

Finally, there are technologies that do generate value that few people have heard of.

In this article, the main hyped, promising, and solid solutions but widely adopted technologies in supply chain management are discussed.

Hyped technologies are getting a lot of publicity but have little proven value. These seem like technologies in search of a solution.

Hyped technologies are getting a lot of publicity but have little proven value. These seem like technologies in search of a solution.

5G is the fifth generation of wireless technology. With 5G, youll see exponentially faster download and upload speeds. Latency, or the time it takes devices to communicate with each other wireless networks, will also drastically decrease. The benefits are clear for consumers that want to download movies on their smart phones and watch them. But will there be benefits for supply chains?

The theory is that as more and more devices throughout the supply chain and manufacturing process become part of the Internet of Things, they will produce an incredibly rich data stream that will send signals in real-time to trigger a wide variety of events. For example, using a 5G network, a parts tote could communicate that the tote is 80% depleted for this SKU which would trigger a re-order of the necessary parts. This would be a trigger across the supply chain which would result in warehouse movements, maybe LTL, consolidation, and finally distribution and delivery of re-supplies.

5G is not getting as much attention as it did last year, but we are still at the hype stage here. Despite television commercials that suggest 5G is already here, the 5G wireless networks is still being built out across the U.S. ARC is not hearing providers of supply chain technology leveraging this network to provide new value to their customers.

We continue to see companies pitching their blockchain solutions in the supply chain realm. Often these are here today, gone tomorrow startups. Blockchain is said to be a strong solution for traceability or to provide payment to linked supply chain partners after their part of a chain of linked activities has been completed. We have continued to ask blockchain providers for the names of customers that are using their technology every day as part of their newly entrenched way of doing business. Blockchain providers cannot provide these references. That is a sure sign that the technology is still in the hype stage.

Promising technologies seem like they would offer robust ROI or other tangible benefits. It is highly logical that the promised benefits will appear. But these technologies are so young, that ARC has not been able to talk to references and verify that the promised benefits are real.

These platforms allow companies to ingest massive amounts of historical and real-time streaming data, clean and prepare it, and see if applying machine learning or AI algorithms and techniques to that data will provide valuable predictions for their business.

In the supply chain realm, leading supply chain software companies are actively working to embed existing applications with AI and machine learning. For most companies this is a less risky and more cost-effective way to access the capabilities of AI.

But there are very big global corporations, corporations with revenues of over $10 billion, that have digital centers of excellence. These companies do believe that custom AI/ML applications can be built that provide value in black spaces not currently covered by existing supply chain applications. Further, for Logistics Service Providers, excellence is supply chain management is how they differentiate themselves. For them building a custom AI/ML application that their competitors do not have could make a lot of sense.Certainly, several of the largest 3PLs are doing work here and claiming they are getting good value. However, it is hard to know how credible those claims like like self-serving marketing messages.

We are also moving to blended solutions that are partly an application framework and partly an AI/ML platform. Anaplan, a supplier providing supply chain planning (SCP) and other business applications, introduced PlanIQ. PlanIQ pulls in data from Anaplan and automatically tests several AI/ML algorithms before selecting the model optimized to generate the strongest forecast for a customers unique use case. PlanIQ includes Amazon Forecast. Amazon Forecast is based on the same ML technology used by Amazon.com.

Startups have been pouring money into tests, but we are still some years away from seeing fleets of autonomous trucks on the road. And in some cases, investment dollars are beginning to dry up for this technology. One of the biggest names in autonomous truck technology was Starsky Robotics. It was at the forefront of putting autonomous trucks on the road. Its list of accomplishments is staggering. In 2016, it became the first street-legal vehicle to be paid to do real work without a driver behind the wheel. In 2018, it became the first street-legal truck to do a fully unmanned run. In 2019, it became the first fully unmanned truck to drive on a live highway. And now, even with these accomplishments, due to a lack of funding, the company shut down this year. The best guess on when we might see autonomous trucks delivering loads without drivers in the truck to take over in case something goes wrong in 2024. That is what the folks at TuSimple are projecting and they seem like straight shooters to us. But even in 2024, these trucks will not be running across all lanes nationwide.Rather there will be a focus on delivering across targeted lanes for select customers. What seems clear, however, is that the ROI of autonomous trucks could be very, very good.

River Logic is using an AI expert system that drives a graph database to aid in automating the building of the digital twin of the value chain. In traditional supply chain planning (SCP) solutions, the model has to be configured step by step this is a products bill of material, this is the routing, this a production machines setup time. But River Logic is touting their solution as one where the AI system designs and builds the graph database and relationships and selects and applies relevant business rules and logic based on a visual drag and drop diagram that lets users draw out their value chain - greatly speeding up model building and SCP implementations, including full representation of financials as they are incurred by the business. Furthermore, behind the scenes the AI expert system composes and generates a full mathematical model of the clients value chain, allowing advanced scenario optimizations to be quickly formulated and operationalized.

Infor also uses a graph database for their Multienterprise Supply Chain Business Network known as Infor Nexus. The Nexus network connects businesses to their entire supply chainfrom suppliers and manufacturers, to brokers, 3PLs, and bankspaving the way for enhanced supply chain visibility, collaboration, and orchestration. Infor makes the point that a graph databases ability to infer relationships helps to keep the model up to date. A company may assume that a suppliers component built in Wuhan China moves through the port of Shenzhen and takes 22 days on average to reach the port of Long Beach in California. But in reality, it may be that often the components often flow through a port in Xiamen and take 25 days to reach California. In short, the graph database can help keep the supply chain model accurate. This is critical for effective performance.

A robust supply chain control tower is built on a cross-functional end-to-end digital twin of the supply chain. It includes visibility to how events across the extended supply chain will impact the ability to fulfill orders to customers. The digital twin models the constraints in transportation, warehousing, production and then can produce optimized plans to handle the inevitable exceptions that arise. In the past a supply chain control towers tended to be focused more on handling transportation exceptions or be more focused on orchestrating around exceptions rather than using true optimization to maximize service at the lowest cost.In order to get the data, clean it, and normalize it, most of these modern control towers are being built using data lakes.

In the last few years a form of goods-to-person automation has come to market. These robotic shuttle systems are a hybrid of traditional shuttle systems and free roaming robots. There are a handful of providers currently offering solutions that fit into this categorization. And each one approaches the problem in a different manner. However, they all offer the benefit of high storage density and a high degree of flexibility due to the dynamic movement of bots. This bot agility removes throughput and sequencing constraints, providing increased productivity potential. These solutions align with the operational needs of many industries. However, they are coming to market just as demand is accelerating for same-day fulfillment of online orders. This spike in demand is especially prevalent in e-grocery fulfillment. These solutions may be fulfilling your next online order of apples and bread.

Robotic process automation is software that is used to automate high volume, repeatable tasks. Over time enterprise systems develop better automation and users can do their job more effectively. But companies using legacy systems may have opportunities to use an external RPA solution to automate the work inside the legacy system. RPAs do this by performing the same computer keystrokes and opening the same modules humans do. We know of a 3PL that received good payback by using RPA to automate the highly manual tasks associated with planning optimization in their legacy transportation management system (TMS). It is also used to examine carrier websites for appointment scheduling.

Descartes is embedding RPA into its routing solution. Descartes points out that for all but the simplest route planning problems, creating the best plan is not as simple as loading data and hitting the optimize button. Instead, the best planners go through multiple steps to generate optimal results. Essentially, RPA can model the steps that the best planners take to produce superior results.

Understanding the Role of Technology in Today’s Foodservice Equipment Marketplace – Total Food Service

Posted: at 11:51 am

Article contributed by Matthew Gavin, RPI Industries

Actually, it turned out to be fairly simple. Luckily my academic interests in engineering and keeping an eye out for costs found a home. After a brief stay at Price Waterhouse, clearly, I needed something more creative. So I sought and found an opportunity working with one of the more creative minds in foodservice: PJ Gavin, who I am blessed to call Dad. I have seen how hard he and his team at RPI and even his competitors work to bring solutions to the nations equipment dealers and consultants and ultimately their end-user operator customers.

But more importantly, foodservice has always seemed to be slightly behind the rest of the world in terms of embracing technology. I saw my joining RPI as an opportunity to merge what I do best: an opportunity to keep an eye on costs and create solutions with what I look at as reverse engineering. I think of that as seeing the solution first and then figuring out how to create and build it.

So, several months into my stay at PWC, my Dad and I were involved in a conversation about the potential of what was being called a food locker. Its a unit that enables a restaurant operator to take and prepare orders and then safety store the meal in a hot or cold locker. With the meal paid for online, it becomes a simple as the take-out customer or third-party delivery firm coming and picking up the food without any contact. That turned into giving my feedback on energy efficiency and a question about the potential of the heat being thrown off by the compressor to evaporate any condensation.

Its amazing that early on, Ive learned that in many cases great tech ideas are either launched or killed based on dumb luck and circumstance. We had no idea that COVID would come along and move Takeout & Delivery to new heights. Our Ondo line of food lockers certainly has found its groove much quicker than any of us anticipated as a result of the Pandemic.

As many of you know the food and equipment industrys big show is the NAFEM Show held every couple of years. Its typically where the latest tech advances make their debut. We brought Ondo to NAFEM 19 in Orlando. You would hardly recognize what the product has morphed into less than two years later. In many ways, Im hoping to take this space and help the industry spot some of the key tech trends early on and then follow them as they evolve and come to market.

At that show, what guests to our booth saw was a big bulky white cabinet. We knew how to make a compartment convertible from hot to cold. I inherited a relationship that my Dad had built with Panasonic to create a kiosk with a lock and key mechanism. There was interest and I began writing code for it, and the conversation continued with Panasonic. It was my job to pull it all together. Little did we know what would lie ahead with COVID.

I think the lesson for all of us with Ondo is that the greater good and real advancement requires the cross blending of technology and foodservice manufacturing expertise. From a purely financial standpoint, it would cost millions to go at this alone to build something out from the bottom up that will ultimately be used by millions of people. What weve learned is you build a team to leverage companies that have expertise in malware and server farms, etc. So for us with Ondo, it began with partnering with Panasonic who has the size and power to make this a reality.

What has been really interesting has been the impact that the Pandemic has had on the restaurant and foodservice equipment business. With that has come a new dependence of food operators on takeout & delivery. From a case manufacturing standpoint that has meant the ability to facilitate contactless transactions between restaurants and their customers.

Although, there are those who look at the foodservice equipment manufacturing industrys approach to technology as archaic, I see a glass half full of opportunity. We live in a world beyond food service that is utilizing automation and robotics, so its just a matter of time. Ultimately like healthcare and finance, our industry will embrace new technology to optimize efficiency. For foodservice, it is going to become essential to battle the challenges of finding labor and optimizing the customer experience in the restaurant.

What I have found most fascinating is the type of entrepreneur that is emerging with their vision of how to maximize takeout and delivery profits while we slug our way through as an industry the second half of the pandemic and then onto the future.

Among the leaders of operators that have vision for the power of technology is Stratis Morfogen. His Brooklyn Dumpling Shop concept is one of the industrys first collaboration of technology and computers. Foodservice has technology and plenty of computers, but the next step will be to add concepts including AI (Artificial Intelligence) to launch a new generation of efficiency. In simple terms that will enable the cost-efficient cloning of code being used to operate in New York to multiple dining units within a brand across the country.

Technology is on the verge of finding its real niche in foodservice. What COVID created is a scenario in which people didnt want to interact with other people and they didnt want to leave their homes. Technology and this new collaboration with computers have enabled visionary operators to create a contactless solution with countless others on the horizon to change our industry.

Matthew Gavin is Vice President of New Technology at RPI Industries. Gavin hails from Moorestown, NJ. He is a graduate of Lehigh University where he earned a degree in integrated engineering. His interest in Math and Science and business has found a home as he works to bring the very latest in technology to the iconic manufacturer of foodservice cabinets and display cases.
